In a joint exercise, the European Commission, (led by DG Enterprise), the EU Member States, the various sectors of the Extractive Industry, and WWF have developed a set of Sustainable Development Indicators specific to the non-energy extractive industries. Of equal significance, a Voluntary Scheme for publicly reporting the data has been created. This paper presents these indicators at the company level and explains the role of companies and trade federations in establishing the reporting process. This has been achieved in just 18 months and the paper identifies 6 Success Factors, which have made this possible. It is believed this is the first Scheme of its kind to be put into place and to have begun operation. It is a model for co-operation between government, the NGO sector and industry. The first set of data, based on the reference year 2001, has been gathered. The SD performances of the European Minerals Industry will be publicly reported on for the first time, on the basis of these 2001 data by industry sub-sector. The Member State level Indicators will follow to complete the picture.

Development of computer-based information systems is predicated on the merger of rapidly developing computer technology and growing managerial demands for information. The focus of this section is on managing the development and implementation of information systems for the 1980's. It is the experience of the majority of contributors to this volume that among unresolved problems of major dimensions in a mineral organization are those of managing the computer-based information systems resource itself. There are three major reasons for this: (1) mineral information systems are relatively new to the senior management of a mining company or a mineral organization; (2) problems are compounded by a developing technology, a new type of personnel with a changing experience/education mix; and (3) an organizational structure and location which, in many organizations, are still being examined. The three authors in this section present aspects of managing the information systems function which, based on their experience, are common to the solution of the problem. The premise that the information systems function has been placed appropriately within the entire business plan of the firm has been made by the authors in their discussion of the various aspects of the management process.

INTRODUCTION Several recent technological improvements - largely by the convey-or industry - have increased the importance of inclined shaft construction for developing mines where ore deposits are relatively shallow. With these newer systems, long conveyor haulages are economically feasible, allowing mine owners to justify the expense of the inclined shaft or slope. What this actually means is that they can now take advantage of the versatility this construction offers. For example, haulage capacity can be changed by conveyor additions or replacements; equipment can be trammed to and from the surface quickly without costly breakdown and re-assembly; and a walkway is available for workers in the event of an emergency. Now, another innovation may accelerate this type of construction, the use of tunnel boring machines or "Mechanical Moles" to dig the slopes. While conventional. drill and blast methods have been used previously to build inclined shafts, the tunnel boring machine technique offers greater production rates, higher safety and a better, much cleaner bore. McGuire Shaft & Tunnel Corporation of Ft. Smith, Arkansas recently started such a slope project - the first ever bid by a contractor based on the use of a "Mechanical Mole".

Since startup of the Syncrude Canada Ltd. (SCL) oil sands facility in northern Alberta 15 years ago, numerous improvements have been made in the ore conveying system and equipment. The unique nature of the material conveyed coupled with the wide range of environmental conditions encountered results in a number of unparalleled challenges. Most of the improvements have been brought about through the use of detailed field evaluation. Numerous publications are available that detail the various aspects of conveyor technology, and a significant list of papers are presented each year adding to the knowledge in this field. In the area of power formulae in the mid- 1970s, there were two major sources for use in the design of the SCL conveyors: the Conveyor Equipment Manufactures Association Handbook, 1988, and DIN Specifications 22101: Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials, 1982. These sources were supplemented by the knowledge of the belt and conveyor equipment vendors and from the general literature. The SCL design was based on the CEMA formula. INTRODUCTION In Canada, most of the rock being broken in underground metal mines is being carried out using traditional drilling and blasting methods. Despite advances being made in hard rock boring and other, more exotic techniques, it is Dynatec's belief that the traditional methods will continue to prevail for many years to come. It is also our belief that modest research efforts expended on the traditional methods will result in substantial financial benefits to the mining and rock tunnelling businesses. Dynatec has pursued productivity improvements through the use of long rounds in both shaft sinking and lateral development. The concept of longer rounds was developed by Dynatec on the Craig Shaft Sinking Project (RETC 1991). This paper reviews the Craig Shaft Long Round success. This technology was subsequently utilized to sink the two shafts at Aur Resources with great success. The development of a Long Round Jumbo for tunnelling is a natural progression of the long round technology developed for the Craig Shaft. Tunnelling with hydraulic drills has been a success in Norway. In the fall of 1976 excavation of tunnels for the development of the Aabjoera scheme was started. Two and a half years later a total of 25 kilometers of tunnels are completed. During the most busy period 5 rigs with hydraulic drills were in operation. GENERAL INFORMATION. Aabjoera Hydro Electric Plant is located in the central part of Norway (Fig. 1). The scheme covers a mountaineous area between the Tosen Fiord and the valley of Namdalen. Water from the area of precipitation is transferred through 5 tunnels to the main reservoir. From here the water is conducted via a 10 km long, unlined supply tunnel down to the Kolsvik power station. The power station is situated underground with a short tailrace tunnel out in the fiord. Average head of water is 507 m. The Aabjoera plant is jointly owned by Helgeland Kraftlag A/S, 8650 Mosjøen and Nord-Trøndelag Elektrisitetsverk, 7700 Steinkjer. The Civil Engineering Division of the latter company has acted as Consulting Engineers for the scheme. General contractors for the whole scheme has been Ing. F. This paper is concerned with studying the dewatering behavior of three samples of iron ore products. The objective is to improve the industrial filtration performance by taking into account the laboratory results. Mineral samples came from the Iron Ore Quadrangle in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. These samples represent products from the industrial processing of hematitic ores. The samples have almost the same chemical and mineralogical compositions, but they have different size distributions and different specific surface areas. The filtration tests were performed using a modified Büchner funnel apparatus. The results indicate that size distribution and specific surface area have significant influences on dewatering behavior. For Sample 1, the addition of flocculant and/or surfactant was not essential to improving filtration performance. For Sample 3, the cake porosity and the cake thickness were influenced by the addition of the flocculant. On the other hand, the simultaneous addition of flocculant/surfactant decreased the cake formation time and reduced the cake moisture. For Samples 2 and 3, it was also observed that the industrial operation could be improved by taking into account these laboratory results. Two key components make up the core of a rapid excavation operation. They are: the breaking up of the rock and its removal. Owing to the complexity inherent in mechanical rock-breaking and the relative infancy of the art, for a number of years the first of these two components has received virtually undivided attention from the industry. Only recently has some concern been expressed about the technology and the economics of the much ignored second component: muck removal. As the continuous boring machine's percentage downtime continues to trend lower in the future, the need for adequate and more effective materials handling systems in rapid excavation will become increasingly more acute. (1) Recognition of the need for a broader and more far-sighted approach to our problem has been eloquently underscored in the conclusions of the Committee on Rapid Excavation sponsored by the National Research Council: "Ultimate attainment of the desired cost and speed improvements is significantly dependent on recognition of the excavation process as a system whose subsystems are critically inter-related. Substantial amounts of full-scale field testing of integrated driving, muck removal, and support subsystems are required." (2)

At the dawn of the computer age in the early 1950's, few people in either the minerals industry or the field of electronic data processing (EDP) would have predicted the tremendous impact that the computer has had on the way we conduct our everyday lives and businesses. Herman Hollerith himself (see next page), the Columbia University mining engineer 'turned statistician who developed the first punched card electronic tabulating machines for the US Census Office in the late 1880's, would doubt- less be amazed at the progress that has been made in the application of data processing techniques to nearly all aspects of the mining cycle (Aul, 1974). More than any other factor, the availability of economical computing equipment has led the way for the development of the broad range of mining computer methods described in this text. While limits have been identified for many of the technologies commonly in use today, new technological advancements point to continued exponential advancements in computing price-performance in the 1980's. With those advancements, we may look forward to continued expansion of the role computers will play in mineral production.

This paper describes the techniques implemented at Randfontein Estates to develop twin-haulages at 'high speed'. An operation which culminated in the world record advance for twin-end multiblast cyclic development in hard abrasive quartzites. A major expansion project was planned for the mine, with the sinking of a third twin-shaft system (to be known as Cooke No. 3), to raise the level of ore production from 3 500 000 to 5 000 000 tonnes per alumm. Subsequent redesign of the proposed shaft system as a single 9 m brattice wall shaft took place, reducing the planned shaft sinking period by 12 months and saving an estimated R 250 000 (U.S. $ 330 000) in sinking costs. The advancement of the Cooke No. 3 Shaft sinking and development programme necessitated a rapid excavation schedule for two interconnecting twin-haulages from the existing Cooke No. 2 twin shaft complex to provide a second means of egress. An early holing between the two shafts would provide significant financial and technical benefits. Pre-development and equipping of shaft pillar excavations would enable a rapid shaft production build up and blocking out of at least one year's ore-reserves.

It is advisable, for any heap leach project, to develop an historical metallurgical data base to predict production heap performance before ore is mined and placed onto the heap. A data base would include results from: interval assays, cyanide solubility tests, and bottle roll tests on exploration drill cuttings samples; and those results plus column leach test data on diamond drill core or bulk ore composites. Subsequent larger scale heap leach test data can then be compared to the historical data base, to blast hole composite data during mining, and eventually to production data. This paper does not discuss metallurgical comparisons between assays, cyanide solubility tests, and bottle roll tests on exploration drill cuttings samples, but does discuss metallurgical comparisons from bottle roll tests, laboratory scale column leach tests, and pilot scale heap leach tests on core and bulk ore samples with operating data for three U.S. commercially producing heap leach operations. Provided that representative core or bulk samples are used for evaluation, heap leach test results accurately predict or understate the success of the commercial operation and remove most of the uncertainty from the investment decision.

Although many ultimate pit limit design algorithms have been developed for the past one- quarter century, only the well known Lerchs-Grossmann's (LG) algorithm is capable of producing a truly optimum ultimate pit limit today. This paper presents a graph theory oriented algorithm for optimum ultimate pit limit design. This algorithm produces a true optimal solution and maximizes the total undiscounted net profit for a given 3-D block mine model. The algorithm performs much better than the well known LG algorithm, in terms of the reduction in computation time and computer memory requirements. More importantly the new algorithm is easier to understand and implement than the LG algorithm. Specifically, this paper discusses: 1) the computer representation of arcs and the rules of arc generations which dictate the formation of trees in the graph, 2) the mechanism of joint support and re-allocation, 3) the properties, the general procedures of the algorithm, and the suggested specific steps to implement the algorithm, 4) comparison between the new algorithm with LG algorithm, and 5) some experience in implementation of the algorithm and two case study results.

The research laboratory of B.U.S Engitec has identified and patented a new process for electrolytic production of lead from lead sulphide concentrates with simultaneous production of elementary sulphur. The process occurs in an aqueous solution, at atmospheric pressure, utilizing a solution of ferric fluoroborate in fluoroboric acid as the oxidizing and solubilizing medium for lead sulphide. After the filtration and separation of a residue composed of elementary sulphur and the gangue which accompanied the concentrate, the solution containing lead as fluoroborate and iron reduced to a ferrous state is sent to a diaphragm electrolytic cell where, in the cathode compartment, the lead is deposited in a compact form on the stainless steel permanent blank. The exhaust solution stripped of lead is sent to the anode compartment where the oxidation of ferrous fluoroborate into ferric fluoroboratetakes place, reproducing the oxidizing solution for new leaching. Depending on operating conditions, it is possible to selectively solubilize the lead from the other metal values present in the concentrate. The sulphur produced from the reaction may be separated from the gangue by extraction with solvent or by flotation.

Sedimentation in highly, flocculated suspensions of fine particles, such as clays, occurs through individual settling units (flocs) that have very open structures and correspondingly low densities (typically less than 5% solids by volume). Such settling processes rapidly lead to the buildup of a bed of flocs that are essentially close-packed, with an inter-floc porosity of perhaps 50%. However, the overall solids content is no more than about 2% to 3% by volume. Consequently, the thickening process is dominated by the bed consolidation rather than by the simple settling of the individual flocs. Experimental measurements of sediment consolidation in flocculated clay suspensions indicate, for a given system, that consolidation rates are essentially determined by the solids concentration and can be evaluated using the classical Kynch treatment. However, these rates are strongly dependent on the physical, as well as the chemical, conditions of the flocculation process. Furthermore, the extent to which gravity consolidation proceeds depends on the total weight of the sediment (i.e., on the bed height and the solids concentration). The implications with respect to thickener operation and the requirements for the laboratory testing for thickener design are discussed.

In Italy at the moment there is a program which involves for the future the exploitation of two uranium mines which are now in the research stage. About one hundred and fifty workers are at present employed in those facilities. An health physics surveillance program is under way and has been designed to fulfill the requirements due to the future exploitation of the two mines. A complete evaluation of the total dose (external + internal) received by the workers will be given together with a detailed analyses of the technical methods employed for such evaluations. The external doses are evaluated on the basis of individual TLD dosimeters, while the evaluation of the internal doses is mainly due to an enviromental survillance program of the radon and radon daughter air concentration inside the mines. The criteria established for the assessment of the sampling procedures, sampling intervals and dose evaluation related to the radon doughter exposure are reported. The external dose received by the workers are lower than 0.2 m Sv~month and the internal exposure less than 6.4 IO-3 J.h.m-3 /year or using the old units 2 WLM/year.

The US Bureau of Mines investigated the fundamental aspects of shear-flocculation using a rapid, in-situ particle size analyzer. Silica was stirred in the presence of an aliphatic amine to determine the effects of collector coverage, stirring speed and solids concentration on the kinetics of shear-flocculation. The results showed that shear flocculation is a two-stage process. In the first stage, which occurs during the first 1-2 min. of the reaction, the mean particle size increases rapidly, and in the second stage, an equilibrium is set up between the rates of floc growth and floc decay. Collector dosage affected the position of the equilibrium by altering the number of surface sites for particle-particle attachment. A minimum stirring speed was necessary for shear flocculation, which was dependent on solids concentration and collector dosage. This stirring speed was the minimum necessary for particles to overcome the electrostatic energy barrier, and that results in keeping the conditioned particles dispersed. Larger particles flocculated more rapidly. At very high stirring speeds, large flocs became unstable, resulting in a narrowed particle size distribution in the slurry.

INTRODUCTION The Advisory Conference on Tunneling held in Washington, D.C. in 1970 under the auspices of the organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) forecast that $54 billion would be expended by member countries on underground construction in the 1970s. Construction activity since the Conference indicates the forecast may have been conservative. Statistics in the report indicated a vast increase in tunneling projects for mass transit, hydro-electric development, railroad tunnels, sewer and sewage retention reservoirs and water tunnels. Development of equipment is required to meet the demands for high speed excavation and provide tunnel driving systems with maximum efficiency and capability to sustain high speed advance rates. BORING MACHINE CAPABILITY During the last decade, use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has increased. Where ground conditions and limits of machine design criteria permit, circular tunnel sections are either the only section , or an alternate sections specified in the documents: a TBM is either required or is an acceptable alternate means of tunneling. One of the largest mining shows in the world is set take place April 15-18 in Santiago, Chile. Expomin 2008 is expected to attract more than 60,000 professionals from around the world who are involved in all aspects of the mining industry. Expomin has become an important place for mining leaders to meet, organizers said, ?with great expectations for the development of new business in international markets.? This is the 10th Expomin. The event, held every two years, is expected to at-tract exhibitors from more than 25 countries, representing nearly 1,000 companies and more than 3,000 brands related to the mining industry, organizers said. Most all of the world?s largest equipment manufacturers and suppliers ? surface and underground ? will be represented. The importance of the event to the Chilean and international mining industry can be seen by the increase in size of the exhibition ? 13 percent more surface space in 2008, compared with the 2006 Expomin. The exhibit will be broken down into four pavilions, covering 34,054 m2 (355,570 sq ft). An outdoor area for the large mining equipment will cover 16,120 m2 (173,520 sq ft).

This study presents the development of a simplified artificial neural network (ANN) for the characterization of rock mass with a simultaneous display of its output in a three-dimensional interactive environment as well as in the form of a text document. The system was developed using JAVA object-oriented language, virtual-reality modeling language (VRML) and JavaScript, and it runs on the Internet. The user can walk through a three-dimensional virtual roadway, checking the underground rock mass behavior and, consequently, can design a support system. The system first characterizes the rock mass with the help of a neural network and recommends a suitable support system for the particular geomining condition. The system then represents its output in a three-dimensional environment. The neural network developed in this system was trained with 261 data sets, and its performance was evaluated with five case histories. The evaluation results showed that the network could identify the rock category and support system adaptively. The average error for the support load was 2.7%. Among the five case histories, two were represented in a three-dimensional environment. The output obtained from the overall system compared favorably with the existing underground conditions.

This paper identifies physical conditions responsible for past instability of the Main Hill area in Kennecott Copper Corporation's Bingham Canyon Mine, Bingham Canyon, Utah, and describes successful stabilization techniques employed in this slide zone. Geotechnical highlights of recent slides are presented, including monitoring, geological engineering data collection, hydrology, physical rock properties, and stability analyses. Local conditions responsible for slope movement in the Main Hill zone are: (1) high pore water pressure that causes a substantial decrease in real and effective material strengths; (2) continuous structural systems that allow sliding in the more competent rock zones; and (3) broad areas containing fractured, altered , and incompetent rock and soil- like materials. The failure mode is structurally controlled and involves a circular-type soil failure in the toe region initiated by excessive pore water pressure. A surface mapping method is presented which assigns rock mass quality on the basis of block size and rock substance strength. This site characterization technique has successfully predicted slide boundaries and failure modes; used in conjunction with laboratory determined shear strengths, it has provided basic input for calculating slope safety factors in the Main Hill slide zone.
