A novel methodology to estimate gold recovery by gravity is presented. It makes use of a population balance model which represents gold liberation, breakage and classification behaviour and applies pre-concentration and recovery data to gravity recoverable gold (GRG) to predict overall recovery. The methodology is designed for gravity circuits located in the circulating load of secondary grinding mills. Gold liberation is estimated by processing a sample of representative ore with a laboratory Knelson Concentrator (LKC) in three successive steps, each at a finer grind than the previous one. Breakage behaviour is represented by a matrix H, which redistributes GRG in the feed of the secondary mill in the various size classes of its discharge. Provision is also made to account for gold overgrinding, which decreases the overall amount of GRG. Classification, pre-concentration and recovery data are estimated from plant performance, and are represented by the diagonal matrices C, P and R. The methodology is demonstrated with case studies of greenfield, retrofit and optimization applications.

Mine shafts that are used as primary ventilation routes are different in their airflow characteristics to other subsurface openings because of the aerodynamic effects of guide rails, buntons, pipes, cables, ropes, and shape, size and velocity of conveyances. As many shafts contribute heavily to the overall resistance of a mine ventilation circuit, it is important to be able to predict the resistance of a planned shaft with reasonable accuracy. This paper describes part of a study on the ventilation characteristics of hoisting shafts, conducted for the Basalt (Nuclear) Waste Isolation Program (BWIP). Methods of quantifying each of the four components of shaft resistance are developed; namely the shaft walls, fittings (buntons, pipes, etc.), the skips or conveyances, including the dynamic effects of their motion, and shaft stations. Practical guidance is given on ways of reducing the shaft resistance. The paper concludes by giving a step by step procedure for the ventilation aspects involved in the design of combined hoisting/ventilation shafts.

Forecasting mined grade variability from exploration information is a challenging task in mine planning. For effective planning of activities, such as workplace scheduling, ore grade quality control, etc., development of realistic numerical simulation models of in situ variability from exploration information is an essential first step. Geostatistical conditional simulation (GCS) is one of the well known methods to develop such simulations. Recently, stochastic fractal models based on the assumptions of scale-invariance and self-similarity have been used for developing simulations of several natural phenomena. It has been suggested that these models might permit the generation of short-scale variability information from exploration data with greater fidelity when the data satisfies the attendant assumptions. In this paper, stochastic fractal models are reviewed, and their relationship to geostatistical variogram models is examined. A comparison of the two simulation techniques has been performed using coal sulfur data from a mined-out coal property. The results of this comparative analysis are also presented in the paper.

Closed-circuit grinding processes are considered in the context of a reactor-separator circuit that involves multifraction streams and products. Because grinding circuits are low-efficiency, capital-intensive operations, modeling to maximize their economic return is appropriate. An attempt to develop and test such a model is presented in this work. The model relies on process simulation for both the mill and the separator, in conjunction with constraints imposed by product specifications. The grinding process was simulated using breakage functions, which provided complete data on the feed and product of the mill. A cyclone bank used as the separator was also simulated using known models. The overall process model provided a complete simulation of the multistream grinding and separation process. The process model was then incorporated into an economic model that predicts grinding cost, subject to process constraints, for a given set of operating variables. The model facilitates economic optimization of the grinding process as it relates to process variables and process hardware.

Capital investments are made for a variety of reasons, ranging from providing incremental capacity at existing operations to developing and implementing new technologies intended to radically improve a company's capabilities. These projects generate very different business opportunities and create value in distinctive ways. For incremental improvements, the capital budgeting process assures at least a loose fit between short-term goals and readily available resources. However, the criteria used to evaluate capital projects often prevent a company from committing to more aggressive goals, which lie beyond the firm's current abilities or resources. Such projects may not have clearly identifiable future cash flows, and the degree of interaction with other projects and the nature of the risk incurred may be difficult to estimate. Additionally, by focusing only on quantifiable benefits, the budgeting process often fails to recognize "soft" improvements such as increased operating flexibility or new knowledge generated by such projects. By rejecting these projects, the capital budgeting process may actually harm the company's future competitive position.

Justifying refinery material handling equipment jointly involves economics and indirect benefits. The simple evaluation method is applicable when either retrofitting facilities or costing new metal refineries. The text includes points of interest regarding equipment selection as an additional guide. Although the copper industry was used as a basis, it is recognized that similarities in material handling may exist within the parallel electrolytic refining and winning of metals such as copper, nickel, lead, zinc, tin, and cobalt. The analysis of four major automatic systems, typically implemented in many tank houses, includes tabulated data plus a detailed description of additional benefits. General information regarding auxiliary material handling equipment and an overview are included for subject completeness. It is suggested that the quantitative and qualitative aspects presented may contribute to the basis for justification of automated material handling. The labor-oriented economics plus related intangible benefits described herein should provide incentives to modernize or replace manual operations where practical.

The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) is an independent, state of Florida research agency. It was created in 1978 to conduct research to enhance the competitiveness of the Florida phosphate industry. The institute also conducts research to prevent, minimize or rectify environmental impacts caused by the industry. And it helps educate the public concerning phosphate-related technology and issues. FIPR is funded by a severance tax on the industry and is governed by a five-member board of directors appointed by the governor. FIPR's research is playing a role in enhancing the competitiveness of the Florida phosphate industry. Its technology research program seeks to improve surface mining and pipeline transportation while reducing the energy cost for pumping phosphate matrix. It is developing new and improved methods of beneficiation and fertilizer production. This includes new process flowsheets and on-line analyzers and process control methods. FIPR is also developing uses for the phosphogypsum byproduct of phosphoric acid production and evaluating the risks associated with its uses.

The development of a process for direct synthesis of very pure ZnO powders from zinc-bearing waste was investigated. The zinc waste which contains 55% zinc was leached with sulfuric acid. After iron removal by hydrolysis from this zinc solution, purification through solvent extraction by the use of D2EHPA as an extractant was carried out. Then, loaded zinc in the organic solution was stripped and precipitated simultaneously using oxalic acid as a precipitant. Synthesized ZnC2O4 precursors by precipitation stripping were calcined to obtain ZnO powders exceeding 99.9% purity. The effects of sulfuric acid concentration, leaching time, and pulp density on the extraction of zinc were studied and optimum conditions for the solvent extraction were obtained through purification of the zinc solution. The size, morphology, and size distribution of synthesized ZnC204 powders were studied in terms of oxalic acid concentration, temperature, surfactant added, precipitation time, etc.

Many times during the construction of a project, whether large or small, the engineer will become involved with management of the work and workforce. In some cases, mine management will turn over the direction and responsibility of doing the work to the engineer. Because of this, it is important to know some of the basic principles of human resource applications- among other management concerns. This chapter, therefore, looks at the fundamental principles of human resource management. Three broad discussions are presented to the reader. These are: (1) organization, communications, and responsibilities of management; (2) analysis of worker motivation; and (3) supervisory leadership. Each topic encompasses the current thinking for coal mining and mining management. Much of the information in this chapter comes from Practical Coal Mine Management, by this author and published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., which discusses in depth many of the ideas presented here. Acid rock drainage (ARD) resulting from the natural oxidation of sulfide mineral wastes has become a major concern to the mining industry, both during the operational period and after mine closure. ARD is generally characterized by high acidity and high concentrations of dissolved metals and sulfates. If the generation of acid cannot be prevented or controlled, it must be treated to eliminate acidity and to reduce the concentration of heavy metals and suspended solids before release to the environment. Microorganisms play an important catalytic role in the generation of ARD. Several prevention, control and treatment technologies that are based on microbiological activities have been developed. The role of microorganisms and biotechnology in the generation of ARD and their role in the methods used for prevention, control and treatment are discussed in this paper. Recently developed passive and biological treatment processes that have been implemented at mine sites are emphasized in this paper. Benefits, limitations and design criteria for passive biological processes are also presented.

Ethoxylated phosphoric ester surfactants were evaluated as collectors for flotation of carbonates from sedimentary phosphate ores, at slightly acidic pulp pH, using sulfuric acid or sodium fluorosilicate as a phosphate depressant. With 12 to 15 carbon atoms in the hydrophobic chain, maximum collecting power was observed for 9 to 10 ethylene oxide units. Only fine carbonates, ranging in size from about 20 to 160 µm or 40 to 200 µm, were effectively removed with phosphoric ester collectors. Utilization of seawater, or water of extremely high hardness, did not detrimentally affect selectivity. Silica, silicates, and residual fine carbonates can be separated in a second flotation stage, with primary amine as a collector. Coarse carbonates are separated by direct flotation of phosphate with fluoride ion as a phosphate activator and primary amine as a collector. In a seawater pulp, fluoride ion was not required. Typical examples of laboratory and pilot- scale test results are given to illustrate capabilities of the various flotation flowsheets.

The past ten years have witnessed substantial development of electronic equipment for execution of process control functions. The methodology of giving instructions to the data-handling system and the organization of the system, both the equipment and instruction coding taken together, have developed simultaneously. Examples of the technology specific to the mineral processing industry can be cited. Approaches to system design developed for the Pinto Valley concentrator incorporating slave and master data processing have been described by Arney, and his associates (1974). Madge (1970) has described the hierarchical systems employed at the operations of Cominco Ltd. The Kennecott Garfield smelter is controlled by a system of microprocessors linked to a general purpose data processor (Marchant, et al., 1977). These systems provide innovative approaches to couple advancing technical capability in electronic data processing to the objectives of process management. The current state of the art described in this chapter is certain to require updating in the 1980's with the advances in technology anticipated.

Introduction Screening is an art, one of the oldest in the process field today, and one of the most widely used in our present age. Screening is being applied to an ever-increasing number of assignments, in an ever-expanding circle of industries. Screening is defined precisely as a mechanical process which accomplishes a separation of particles on the basis of size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. Particles are presented to apertures in a screening surface and rejected if larger than the opening, or accepted and passed through if smaller. Screens are machines with screening surfaces used to classify materials by size. The screening surface is the medium containing the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. Screens are put to many uses - size separation, dewatering, desliming, media recovery, scalping, trash removal, washing, dedusting, conveying, concentration, and many combinations of these functions. Geology and weather effects produce natural ground movements that may be misinterpreted as mine subsidence. Weather, local geology and vegetation clearly influence the elevation of the ground surface through frost action and changes in groundwater levels and soil moisture content. Common practices of monument and benchmark design and placement do not address the problem of natural ground movements. Monuments can be designed to minimize some natural ground movements. Differential displacements can be reduced by knowledgeable placement of benchmarks and monuments which are of similar design and construction. Commonly, the threshold values of movement for the determination of mine-induced subsidence are dependent on the closure errors (accuracy) of individual surveys. Accuracy is more than the amount of closure error; it should include the range of elevation changes (error band) determined for each monument over a period of time before it is disturbed by mining. Multiple baseline surveys of the entire monitoring system, conducted before the onset of subsidence, should be used to establish subsidence detection limits.

In this paper, the authors attempt to develop engineering based approaches for estimating safety factors against pillar and floor failures and predicting likelihood of subsidence events over abandoned coal mines in Illinois. There are two critical problems involved in the analysis: determination of geotechnical properties, and consideration of time effect. The authors attempt to solve the problems by generating hypotheses, which are used to modify existing engineering models for estimating pillar and floor safety factors. The modified models are validated using data from two well established databases of subsidence events over active and abandoned mines in Illinois. The data analysis suggests that most of the trough type subsidence events in Illinois were caused by floor failures rather than pillar failures. The subsidence incubation period seems to be directly related to initial floor safety factors at the time of mining. This correlation can be used to predict the likelihood of subsidence and to assess subsidence risks within both spatial and temporal contexts where detailed mine maps are available.

The Companhia Vale do Rio Doce in Brazil operates one of the most extensive systems in the world for the mining, transportation, processing, pelletizing and shipping of high grade hematite iron ore and pellets. Current shipping of unbeneficiated, sized, high grade ore from its ports at Tubarão and Vitória is now at the rate of 17,500,000 metric tons annually. An increase in this annual rate is now under study. Using the technology and facilities of Lurgi (1) and Arthur G. McKee company CVRD undertook a program to process and pelletize two types of fines - "Blue Dust" and ?Itabira Fines?. Blue Dust is a high grade fine ore which was bypassed while mining the direct shipping ores and which, also, exists as a very large ore body called the Conceição Mine. Itabira Fines is a lower grade of fine ore which is comprised of in-situ fines and, also fines which are generated in sizing the direct shipping ores for a rigid specification market.

The need to modernise and increase the safety provision of older road tunnels raises challenges in maintaining the operation of the tunnel during such improvement works. The Mersey Kingsway twin road tunnels located in Liverpool UK, constructed in the late 1960s, have had three new cross passages constructed to allow emergency evacuation from one tunnel to the other tunnel and provide safer access for emergency services. The 3200m long road tunnels are lined with an unusual reinforced concrete steel-faced segmental lining with a paint finish. Construction of the cross passages occurred during night possessions with the tunnels returned to normal operation during the daytime. Constructed through water bearing sandstone and lined with precast concrete segments, the passages required advance ground treatment and support works. This paper presents the historical background to the Mersey Tunnels and describes the procurement strategy, design and construction approach adopted for these important safety improvements.

Stressmap is a program whereby the earth's stress field is charted in detail and utilized for design of mines and mine exploitation. This program is implemented by mapping the attitude (location, direction, dip, and extent) of induced rock ruptures during the process of hydrafracturing drill holes contiguous to mine interest. The program includes utilization of ancillary naturally occurring stress relief signals, They are precipitated because the earth is indeed dynamic and the strata of the crust are continually adjusting to load and/or strain differentials resulting in rock deformation and fracturing. These fracturing adjustments occur as small to tiny earthquakes comparable to Richter magnitudes of one, zero, minus one, and smaller events termed microearthquakes. Obviously, the earth's stress field changes due to continued differential loading and crustal movements; therefore it becomes conspicuously evident that resolving today's stress field as opposed to paleostresses is most important for efficient, economical, and safe mining operations.

The recent recession has severely impacted the performance and results of virtually all of our natural resource companies. The depressing climate continues to linger and recovery maybe sometime away. Problems remain for resource companies in the steel and petroleum industries as well as the mining business. In February, at the AIME Annual Meeting in New York, an All-Institute session presented a variety of views on the situation. A. T. Yu, chairman of ORBA Corp., Mountain Lakes, NJ, organized presentations by top management personnel of four natural resource companies. This well attended session heard management strategems for the present and views for the future. A compilation and synthesis of these presentations, gathered by Dr. Yu, are presented here for ME readers. Leading off will be William A. Griffith, president and chief executive officer of Hecla Mining Co., Wallace, ID. Other speakers presented here include Wilfred P. Schmoe, executive vice president of Du Pont Co., Wilmington, DE; Frank W. Luerssen, chairman and chief executive officer of Inland Steel Co., Chicago, IL; and Adam H. Zimmerman, president and chief operating officer of Noranda Mines Ltd., Toronto, Ontario. First, then Griffith's remarks. Introduction The key to successfully managing a natural resource company in austere times is good management in good times. In other words, position the company during prosperous times to survive the times when the well dries up. Although we know how to manage properly, for various reasons we sometimes do not do it. We forget the lessons of history. We allow ourselves to be carried away by our egos. We fail to position our companies properly in good times. As a result, in bad times we find ourselves in deep trouble. We need constant reeducation in the things we already know. In the natural resource industries, proper positioning in good times involves becoming a low-cost producer, retaining the flexibility to pull in our horns, developing a lean and effective organization, and maintaining a healthy balance sheet. Nothing improves the chance of survival during austere times as much as being able to produce at a lower cost than your competitors. In our business, that means having low-cost mines - low cost because the ore bodies are high grade or favorably located, and because they are efficiently operated. It also means recognizing the competition. The key numbers are the cost to produce an ounce of silver or gold. Nothing else really counts. And our competition is every other precious metal mine in the world. Flexibility is important when one gets stuck with a high-cost operation, often because things do not work out as we expect. It is important to be able to shut down an operation quickly and easily, without high holding costs, and without disrupting the corporate organization. A lean and mean, effective organization of competent people is vital during bad times. A company will not have that if it is not developed and maintained during good times.
