A laboratory study was carried out to evaluate the effect of oxygen and lead nitrate on the recovery of gold by cyanidation of a free milling gold ore, which contains 0.4 % copper as chalcopyrite. Efficient gold extraction is achieved only under specific conditions. The recovery of gold was increased from less than 90% to up to 98% by addition of lead nitrate. In the pre-leaching, the kinetics of oxidation of soluble sulphides are not an accurate indication for the length of the treatment. Even though the consumption of cyanide was reduced due to the inhibition of the dissolution of chalcopyrite by increasing additions of lead nitrate, cyanide consumption had to the held above 1.85 kg/t to maintain good recovery of gold. The continued addition of lead nitrate above 300 git had no impact on the recovery of gold. It was also found that the addition of lead nitrate at the start of cyanidation gave the same performance as when added during pre-leaching. The addition of oxygen increased the recovery of gold by 1.5%. The concentration ofNaCN had to be maintained in the range of700 mg/L because of the high concentration of copper in solution. The recovery of gold dropped significantly when the average NaCN concentration fell below 640 mg/L. Application of the findings of the laboratory study at the industrial scale led to improved plant performance.

This is the 10th annual tabulation of US mineral royalties published in MINING ENGINEERING. The first year, 1982, the author solicited information about royalties and the cost of reserves. That column contained only a few royalties - not enough to tabulate. Since then, the response has been sporadic but the entries have grown to more than 300. Some have been deleted. Some of the older information has been deleted to make room for new entries. All indications suggest that the readers enjoy and use the information. But more information is needed. Russian practice In 1989, this column gave a brief history of mineral leasing and royalty payments as the concept applies to mining in the United States. This year's narrative deals with information about the mineral ownership in Russia. That country is in political and economic turmoil, including administrative systems and methods. And many laws are likely to change. What follows describes the Russian system of mineral ownership as of early 1992, according to Kirill Kavun. He begins "All the subsurface space of the Russian Federation with minerals contained belongs exclusively to the state. This forms the Common State Mineral Fund. Land parcels may be state, municipal, public or private property. They may be let to be owned and used by individuals, juridical persons, national/territorial or administrative/ territorial formations." This seems to apply to surface rights, as known in the US.

Thin-seam mining presents unique challenges when management or economic conditions require significant productivity increases. These challenges can be further amplified depending on such factors as labor unions, federal and state regulations and market characteristics. This article explores the turnaround situation occurring at Tanoma Mining Co. (TMC), a medium-sized, underground coal mining company in central Pennsylvania. The company has used a systematic approach of improving management controls and direction, labor relations and communications to improve its cash flow from negative to positive within a projected five-year span. An intensive upgrade-rebuild-replacement program for mining equipment and systems has also been established to support other management activities. Discussion Thin-seam coal mining is an industry within the broader industry of coal mining. Thin seam mining faces the same cost pressures and engineering problems as its higher-seam competitors, without the advantages of moving volume per foot of extracted material. To stay at economic parity with others requires additional creativity within the management team to extract higher productivity gains from the existing workforce and mining systems. The Tanoma operation is a deep mine in Indiana County, PA, about one hour northeast of Pittsburgh. Coal is extracted from the Lower Kittanning "B" seam. Mineral production implies emissions of particulate matter (dust), noise and vibration that may cause conflicts with neighbors living nearby. In Norway a few conflicts has been brought to court, the latest in 2006. This paper discusses dust emissions and dust depositions (dustfall). The pollution authorities have accepted monitoring of dustfall instead of suspended dust as the first step in conflict cases concerning small and medium sized enterprises. In the case of exceeded limit values, the second step is to require monitoring of suspended dust and next the implementation of control actions to reduce dust emissions. Dustfall monitoring programmes carried out at six mineral production plants in Norway, show that the mineralogical rates of dustfall are rather low a few hundred meters away from the plants or the tailings disposal. They are mostly considerable lower than the limit value of 5 g/m²/30days accepted by the authorities. Seasonal variations between mineralogical and organic dust fractions can be observed in Norway, with higher content of mineral dust during winter time. Other sources to mineralogical dust can be recognized. During winter time wear of road pavement and sand on icy roads can give high emissions of mineralogical dust to the ambient air. Parallel monitoring of suspended dust and rates of dustfall indicate that dustfall can be used to estimate the level of suspended dust. A model for estimating suspended dust based on records of dustfall is presented.

Thank you Mr. Chairman. It was a generous introduction. It allays some of the puzzlement I have of being a minority among the speakers at this conference. I see from the program that only two of us have been asked to speak on topics in keeping with an election year. Instead of reporting facts on past events as most speakers are, J. W. Wilson, of Consolidation Coal, and I have been designated to forecast the future. Forecasting in an election year implies a liberty to fabricate at will, hallucinate, fantasize, stretch fact and fancy and generally prognosticate without regard for the consequences. Since I'm not seeking your votes, promises aren't mandatory. This will be done with supreme confidence stemming from profound wisdom and a foolproof crystal ball. So instead of soliciting your vote, I'll simply penetrate 24 years of tomorrows, which may not be much different than some of us remembering the later hours of last night. My remarks do not draw upon Gulf planning department projections. Instead they are a roll of the dice of personal conjecture to stretch your imaginations on oil shale mining through the year 2000. In this regard, it is sobering to keep in mind that it has been in my lifetime that investors wouldn't risk a dollar on paperback books, motels, supermarkets, or drive-in restaurants. And only thirty years ago it was predicted by an eminent Ivy League professor

The Stillwater Mining Co. of Nye, MT, is operating a platinum-palladium mine that requires an extensive system of footwall laterals to facilitate mine production. The 10-year mine plan calls for more than 48,300 lineal m (160,000 lineal ft) of footwall lateral. A rapid tunneling and raising system is necessary to sustain mine production schedules and achieve production goals. This article describes the results of using a Robbins 4.1-m-diam (l3.5ft-diam) tunnel boring machine (TBM) to develop the footwall laterals and a Robbins RBM-6SP raise boring machine to develop raises at the mine. The Stillwater Mining Co is a partnership between Chevron Resources Co. and Manville Corp. Chevron Resources is the managing partner. When the mine began production in September 1986, the owners were primarily concerned with the actual production of platinum and palladium, the grade minable and the amount that could be mined. As mine development and mine production proved feasible, the owners considered higher production levels. The Stillwater Mine is developed by a system of adits (known as footwall laterals) that are driven parallel to the ore bearing zone. This led mine officials to consider using a mechanical boring machine in the primary mine development. Previously, tunnel boring machines have not been used successfully in mining applications. Therefore, the owners decided to purchase a used machine to reduce the potential risk.

INTRODUCTION There are currently around fifteen companies in the United States and Europe manufacturing hard rock tunneling machines. In recent years upwards of 200 hard rock tunnels of lengths up to 12 miles and diameters to the order of 30 ft have and are being successfully driven by over 100 different machines. It has been predicted that within the next decade over 2,000 miles of tunnels will be driven for transportation purposes in the United States alone (OECD Advisory Conference on Tunneling, Washington, 1970) and it is expected that eventually most tunnels including mine drivages will be excavated by machines. All tunneling machines have certain common basic functions; thrust is applied to drive or hold the rock cutting tools into the face, and torque is applied to rotate the cutting tools over the face so that they can continuously break out rock. The speed of head rotation, together with the torque requirement, determines the cutter head power. (The power required to push the head forward is usually negligible.) There are many factors which determine how successfully a given tunneling machine will perform in a given rock but one of the most important is effective utilization of cutter head power. This paper is a review of the specifications and performance of hard rock tunneling machines, obtained from manufacturers' catalogs, published literature, talks with manufacturers and visits to operating machines throughout the United States and Europe.

INTRODUCTION When Palmer King asked me to prepare a paper for this conference, it seemed quite appropriate, since I am Chairman of Subcommittee No. 4 of the U. S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and we are presently making a detailed study of contracting practices. Before the end of this year, we expect to publish our report containing guidelines aimed at improving our contracting practices and minimizing the problems which develop therefrom. The American construction and mining industries today are glowing examples of the ingenuity of man pitting his wits against the unknown. Without the promise of rewards commensurate with the perils faced and the effort expended, it is doubtful that these industries could have reached their present state of advancement. Nevertheless, these industries are still primitive compared to many others such as aerospace and electronics. That our present contracting practices leave something to be desired is evidenced by the fact that many of our underground projects wind up with tremendous increases in estimated cost, financial disaster, and costly dispute and litigation. The situation is aggravated by the current economic uncertainty, energy crisis, and shortage of materials. At the same time, if our industries are to develop their maximum technologic potential, we must employ contracting practices which will encourage that development. INTRODUCTION Stillwater Tunnel construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 1973. The tunnel will be the site of an extensive program in rapid excavation research. This paper presents a progress report regarding our plans and relates the tentative decisions which have been made on how to carry out the research effort. The details are subject to revision as more input is obtained from other Government agencies interested in tunnel construction and from experts in industry and educational institutions. The objective of the research program is to bring about faster, less costly tunnel construction. This objective will be pursued through the development, improvement, and evaluation of various construction systems and investigative techniques. The need for this kind of program was recognized by the National Research Council, in its authoritative report "Rapid Excavation - Significance, Needs, Opportunities." (1) The Council advocated a federally funded $200 million, 10-year program to help meet the $69 billion market it expects in underground excavation between 1970 and 1990. The significance of tunnel construction to Reclamation is made clear by statistics of its tunneling experience and outlook. Reclamation has constructed 174 water conveyance tunnels totaling over 190 miles, Six tunnels are presently under construction which have a combined length of about 27 miles. There are on the books nine authorized, but unfunded tunnel projects totaling another 70 miles in length. Many more miles of tunnels are included in programs in various stages of investigation.

In reasonably dry rock, long-wave radar can theoretically explore to distances approaching 75 meters (250 ft). High-resolution radar reflections have already been demonstrated through 13 m of hard limestone, through 9 to 18 m of coal in place and through 225 m of rock salt, using only low-power experimental radar equipment. Radar reflections have been received through the rock from rough pillar walls, from faults, and from a slim, uncased, vertical drill hole. In three years of intermittent experimentation, the feasibility of rapid radar exploration of large volumes of rock, with portable equipment, in deep, wet workings has been demonstrated. With future, improved equipment the theoretical working range, of the order of 75m, is expected to be attained in most hard rocks. THE TECHNIQUE Fig. 1 illustrates an early "monocycle" radar system (1) set up in a coal mine. This radar equipment is entirely different from that employed for detecting distant objects through the atmosphere. However, the basic principle is the same: a pulse of electromagnetic energy is radiated by the transmitter, a portion is reflected by some "target" object embedded in the surrounding medium and some of this energy is collected by the receiving antenna. In the receiver, the pulse is amplified, is "stretched out in time" by a sampling process, and is displayed on the screen of a cathode-ray oscilloscope. Mineral resources comprise of metallic, non-metallic, and fossil fuels. Our civilization, and the associated economic and industrial developments are inherently dependent on the availability and use of minerals. This is evident from historical development and identification of civilization eras throughout human history: the stone age, the iron age, the bronze age, and the current computer age. This paper deals with the depletable fossil fuel sector of minerals; this is represented by crude oil, natural gas, and coal. Fossil fuels provide approximately 80% of total global primary energy supply; the rest being provided by renewables (wind, hydrothermal, solar), nuclear, and biomass. Economic, industrial, and population growth will, inevitably, lead to an increase in demand for energy. In general, per capita energy consumption is correlated with per capita income, with the US showing the highest energy use per capita, and South Asia having the lowest. This paper examines the underlying interrelated issues (factors) of energy reserves, production, scarcity, depletion, economic, and technological factors and impact on long term availability and thus sustainability. Is it possible to extend the time to economic depletion of these resources? This will have an impact, direct or otherwise on total energy availability, and the inter-temporal allocation of the resource. Specific economic and physical parameters relevant to mineral supply and their respective impact on depletion, and inter-temporal welfare are investigated. These variables include own price, substitute price, population, income, technical innovation-both on supply as well demand, and resource substitution.

Historian and storyteller, Duane Smith, will be the keynote speaker at the National Mining Hall of Fame's 10th anniversary induction banquet on Saturday, Sept. 6,1997 in the Museum Convention Center at Leadville, CO.Smith is a professor of history and southwest studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO. He is also an award-winning author of 28 books about the West and mining. Hall of Fame Board Chairman Richard Moolick said the induction banquet event will mark the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum's 10th anniversary in its Leadville facility, a century-old Victorian schoolhouse. Karl Elers, chairman of Battle Mountain Gold in Houston, TX, will be the master of ceremonies. He is a member of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum's board of directors. The six inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be enshrined by Thomas Falkie, president of Berwind Natural Resources of Philadelphia, PA. He is also chairman of the Mining Hall's board of governors. The six inductees will join 132 mining greats who were previously honored. The black-tie (optional) banquet will be highlighted this year by guests who prefer to don 1890s dress for the occasion in the old silver-mining boomtown. A cocktail reception and open house will precede the banquet, with tours of the district and special events to follow on Sun- day, Sept. 7.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration, in cooperation with IMC Global Operations, Inc., conducted a joint study to determine the effectiveness of the technology currently in use at the mine to control diesel particulate exposures. IMC Global operates an underground potash mine using diesel-powered equipment to extract minerals. IMC uses a variety of technologies to control worker exposures to diesel particulate. These technologies include: ventilation, low sulfur fuel, oxidation catalytic converters (OCC), maintenance and work practices. The study was conducted over a two-week period, two shifts per day. During the first week (six shifts), baseline data on exposures and diesel particulate emissions were obtained. New OCC's were installed over the weekend on all equipment on the test section. During the second week (six shifts), data were collected to assess the effectiveness of the new OCC devices. In addition to exposure and diesel particulate emissions data, mine ventilation, engine exhaust temperatures and mine operational data were obtained. The primary means of determining diesel particulate concentrations was the respirable combustible dust (RCD) method. Gas concentrations carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO,), and nitrogen dioxide (NO,) were measured using passive dosimeter badges and gas bottles. Results of measurements of diesel particulate, gases, and air- flows were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of airflow and oxidation catalytic converters for controlling diesel particulate exposures. The use of oxidation catalytic converters resulted in reductions of both workers' exposures and diesel emissions.

Emissions of particulates, unburned hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides (NO[ ]) and carbon monoxide (CO) from diesel engines are of concern in mines, particularly underground mines. All these undesirable products except NOx are the result of incomplete combustion in the cylinders. Various approaches to achieving more complete combustion in diesel engines have included different fuel compositions, use of catalysts, fuel additives, engine modifications, and oxygen-enriched intake air. The present study shows that injecting minute quantities of primarily platinum group metal catalysts into the intake air of a Deutz/MWM D916-6 mine diesel engine substantially reduces emissions in the exhaust. The catalyst injection system, which was developed by National Fuelsaver Corporation (Robin. 1981), transfers catalyst compounds in solution to a stream of air bubbles by a process called Bubble Fractionation (Lemlich et al.. 1966, 1968. 1970). The amounts are so minute that concentrations in the engine exhaust should be well below OSHA/NIOSH Time Weighted Average (TWA) exposure limits at steady state, a fact that was confirmed by analysis of collected particulates in the exhaust. When the catalyst injection was used along with a pleated paper filter to remove exhaust particulates, the filter operating life was shortened greatly. Therefore, this system is not recommended for use on diesel engines equipped with a water scrubber and a filter. It does offer a practical and relatively economical way of reducing exhaust emissions from other diesel engines, such as those in outby mine service

The increased use of continuous miners to extract thicker coal seams has necessitated the use of enhanced ventilation systems in the headings. Due to the increased face size, more ventilation is required to effectively dilute the liberated methane down to acceptable levels. If more air is directed to the face an increase in the entrainment of dust creates an increased potential for workers to be exposed to dust. To enable the ventilation systems to reduce the methane levels and the levels of the airborne dust the ventilation systems in the heading have to be carefully designed. The matter is made more complicated through the use of other ventilation methods like jet fans, air-moving sprayfans on the continuous miners and high capacity scrubbers on the continuous miners. To enable the design of a balanced ventilation system in seam heights of over five metres requires methods that consider the system in a three- dimensional manner rather than in a two-dimensional fashion. Through the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with appropriate methods of taking underground face ventilation readings these problems can be solved in a cost effective way. Using computer modelling, ventilation methods can be designed and assessed instead of using costly underground trials to test the alternatives. Use of this system has led to a higher level of ventilation design as well as a more effective method to combat the health and safety hazards in coal mine headings.

Surface subsidence has been recognized as an inevitable consequence of underground coal mining for several centuries. The damage resulting from this phenomenon has been witnessed in rural as well as in urban areas and ranges from simple land settlement to severe structural damage to buildings. Subsidence prevention is not feasible, at least under the existing technological and economic constraints of underground coal mining. Using a rational method of subsidence prediction, it has been demonstrated in many coalfields that subsidence control can be successfully practiced in order to reduce and accommodate subsidence within environmentally acceptable levels. This paper presents the development and testing of a subsidence model, based on the zone area method. This technique is a refined development of the influence functions and it is capable of investigating a mining plan of any shape, thus facilitating both longwall and room-and-pillar mining systems. More specifically, this study can be divided into two major efforts: (a) The development of the zone area model. This formulation was designed to accommodate the analysis of an optimum number of zones, over the area of interest, both accurately and efficiently. (b) The testing of the computer techniques with appropriate field measurements. In order to accomplish this, published as well as unpublished information was collected and analyzed according to a regionalized scheme. This procedure minimized differences in subsidence characteristics between the various coalfields and allowed a regional validation of the predictive capabilities of the model.

As orebodies being mined globally are of ever-decreasing grades, the focus on the concentration process has moved increasingly to the challenges faced in management of the gangue minerals. This is especially so in the flotation of platinum group minerals (PGMs), where head grades are typically in the region of 4–7 g/t. Hence, in PGM operations, a typical recovery of about 80 percent requires depressing about 85 percent of the gangue minerals. In a flotation cell the main control parameters are reagent type and dosage, froth depth and air addition rate. This paper reviews research projects carried out over an extended period aimed at optimizing the depression of gangue minerals: both those that are naturally floatable and those, such as chromite, that are entrained.  This has involved comparing the two major depressants used in the industry — guar and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) — in the depression of the relevant gangue minerals, as well as investigating their consequent effect on the behavior of the froth phase. Because most PGM flotation plants treat the ore as if all the PGMs are associated with sulfides, copper sulfate is widely used as an activator, but this can also lead to inadvertent activation of gangue minerals. Finally, chromite levels must be kept below 3–5 percent to avoid any negative effects on smelter performance, and thus it is important to reduce chromite recovery which mainly occurs due to entrainment through, for example, froth depth control.

A three-part study was conducted to relate the dust generation propensity of a coal sample, defined here as the dust generation rate (grams of dust generated per tonne of coal broken), to its characteristics, in order to rank coal seams according to their respirable dust generation potential. In this paper, the results of a single breakage study on a variety of coal samples encompassing all coal ranks, and samples from operating mines are discussed. Further, where data are available, the primary dust generation rates of coal samples collected from underground coal mines are compared with the in-mine dust generation rates. The results of this analysis are then used to apply the results of this study to longwall face ventilation design. Vitrinite reflectance, and level of organic metamorphism are highly correlated with primary respirable dust generation rates of bituminous coal samples. The dust generation rates in underground coal mines are an order of magnitude higher than the primary dust generation rates in the laboratory. Depending on the type of coal, production rates, and dust control procedures, the air quantity required for airborne dust control can vary significantly. The air quantities on some high production longwalls are approaching the limits beyond which it may not be possible to reduce ambient ARD concentrations to less than 2 mg/m3 by dilution ventilation alone. In these cases, the miner's exposure should be controlled through the use of personal protective de- vices and administrative practices.

This paper presents the findings of a face ventilation investigation, conducted by the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, at a underground coal mine operating in the Illinois No. 5 coal seam. The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of a blowing face ventilation system in controlling methane liberation in the face area while mining with brattice distances up to a maximum of 40 feet from the face (extended cut). The continuous miner on this section was remotely controlled and equipped with a machine mounted dust collector. Data collected during this investigation included methane concentrations, intake and return air quantities in the face area, and scrubber air quantities. In addition, a time study was conducted to correlate the methane peaks to activities in the face area. In conjunction with the face study on Section A, separate methane liberation studies were conducted on three additional sections: B, C, and D. This was done in order to compare intake methane concentrations and methane liberations from other sections in the mine to the test section. Calculations indicated that the minimum intake air quantity necessary at the inby end of the line brattice for the section investigated was 7,000 cfm. Due to the higher intake methane concentrations and average methane face liberations measured on three other sections, the minimum air quantities necessary at the inby end of the line brattice were determined to be 13,900 cfm, 11,100 cfm, and 15,000 cfm, respectively.

The successful demonstration of a precast segmented concrete liner in the Lexington Market Section of the Baltimore Regional Rapid Transit System (BRRTS) is an important step forward in our continuing efforts to control tunneling costs in the USA. In addition to its contribution to specific savings in future tunnels, this demonstration project has taught other lessons about the U.S. tunneling industry and about the process of "mainlining" new and improved technology into that industry. This paper will present an overview of the Lexington Market Demonstration Project from its beginnings to the present time. In addition, it will discuss other implications which have an important bearing on the extent to which tunnels will be used in future transportation systems in the USA. THE HISTORY Precast segmented concrete tunnel liners are not new. An unbolted version was reportedly used in New York City in the 1930's. The modern bolted configuration has been in use in foreign countries for more than 15 years. Indeed, consideration of the use of precast bolted segments below the water table in the USA dates back to the BART system in San Francisco in the 1960's. At that time, they were evaluated and it was concluded that the state of the art would not allow segments to be precast to the required tolerances. A secondary grinding operation would be required if water-tightness was to be assured, making them economically non-competitive with steel. Based
