This paper will review the evaluation performed for the Cottonwood & Hackberry Creek Wastewater Interceptor Improvements Project to replace two separate aging and undersized interceptor sewers by either open cut construction or trenchless construction methods. A case study will be discussed for the utilization of microtunneling to avoid a deep open cut excavation within a landscaped roadway median to construct nearly a mile of new 60-inch interceptor sewer in an urban area adjacent to an environmentally sensitive riverine area, while minimizing the permitting and environmental impacts of construction, and minimizing the impacts to residents and vehicular trafc and restoration reuirements.

Sulfide tailings from past and present mining activities are important hosts of critical elements and precious metals. This review paper presented a literature survey on the recovery practices of some critical minerals containing Te from sulfide tailings with a special focus on the physical beneficiation and hydrometallurgical separation methods. Finally, a conceptual framework and possible processing flowsheets were proposed. The findings of this review will be useful for the researchers in the field of geochemistry, mineral processing, and metallurgy to evaluate the separation processes for reprocessing of mine tailings for the recovery of critical minerals.

The use of resin-grouted cable supports to control large ground movements in several types of underground mines has increased substantially since being introduced in 1991. Cables offer several advantages over traditional support systems, having large support capacities coupled with the flexibility to be used in low openings. Cable slings have been designed to be installed on-cycle using no-spin technology or a two-piece unit that can be placed with hand-held drilling equipment. Additionally, yielding cable supports have been developed and are being used to control large amounts of movement in coal and evaporite deposits.

To date, human space exploration has been almost completely dependent on the use of resources carried with astronauts and cosmonauts from the surface of the Earth. The only exception to this has been the harvesting of solar energy to power space stations like Skylab, Salyut and Mir for long-duration missions. This dependence on materials which must be transported into orbit at costs in excess of $5000 per pound is the fundamental limiting factor in space exploration and operations. It is likely that launch costs can eventually be greatly reduced by means of such innovations as true single stage to orbit vehicles, aerospace planes, or serial electromagnetic or laser launch systems. However, the Earth will always remain an expensive source of materials for space construction and for basic commodities such as propellant and life support liquids and gasses. Fortunately, abundant sources of materials exist which are already in space, outside of the Earth's deep gravity well.

In this decade mining companies in western Canada have searched for reliable and inexpensive ways to improve mine productivity. Truck dispatching systems, equipment vital sign monitoring and sensing, vehicle guidance systems, have all been considered. In this paper the off -highway vehicle monitoring systems used or planned to be installed at surface coal mines in western Canada are described. The monitoring systems are divided according to their function and application; installation and testing procedures are described, as well as the economic benefits to the mining operation.

Prior to the commissioning of the Sansu Sulphide Treatment Plant (STP), Ashanti Goldfields' treatment facilities were capable of producing some 700 000 ounces of gold per annum. Ore sources were underground refractory sulphides, surface oxides and old tailings dams. In order to increase the mines production to 1 million ounces per annum and to accommodate the change in ore sources as surface mining moved into fresh sulphides, a part of the strategy adopted was -the construction of a new sulphide treatment plant with a capacity to mill 2.2 million tonnes per annum and produce 400 000 ounces of gold. The STP has been designed, built and commissioned. and has been in operation since February 1994. The Plant boasts the world's largest Bio-oxidation facility which is capable of treating 790 tonnes of sulphide concentrate per day at a grade of 11.4% sulphur and is currently undergoing an expansion to increase its capacity to 1050 tonnes per day. The following sections describe the reasons for selecting the BioX® Process, the plant design, the commissioning experience and the plant performance to date.

This study explores implementing a machine learningbased system to generate a 3D surface repre- sentation of the roof and support straps in the mine. Event cameras have been chosen for their performance in high-dynamic-range lighting conditions and for their low latency. To enable automated drilling and bolting, 3D vision using eventbased cameras has been developed. A ground-truth set is created using two, time-synced event cameras and a LiDAR camera. These sensors are used to construct a ground-truth dataset of corresponding event- camera images and surface maps from the LiDAR. The network is tested with stereopairs of event images and produces a depth image with ±5 mm RMS error on average across 1000 test images.

"The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) recently completed the 24-foot diameter Euclid Creek Tunnel using a steel-fiber reinforced concrete segmental lining. During construction HMM, the McNally/Kiewit JV, CSI/Hanson JV, and the NEORSD performed a test program to evaluate replacement of steel fiber with synthetic fiber. A section of synthetic-fiber-reinforced cast-in-situ lining was also placed as part of the permanent works for the starter and tail tunnels. Laboratory and field testing were performed on two complete segmental rings reinforced solely with synthetic fibers. This paper summarizes the testing program, construction, and results of the synthetic-fiber-reinforced CIP lining and concrete segments. INTRODUCTION The principal feature of the Euclid Creek Tunnel (ECT) project is a CSO storage tunnel that is one component of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District’s (NEORSD) Easterly CSO storage and conveyance system. The tunnel, shafts, and appurtenant facilities will be used for the collection and storage of CSOs from the northeastern part of Cleveland, Ohio and subsequent conveyance to the NEORSD’s Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment. The ECT project includes five drop shafts that extend as deep as 220 feet below the ground surface. The ECT alignment and shaft locations are shown in Figure 1. Traditionally in northeast Ohio, tunnel excavations were supported with a two-pass system using steel ribs and timber lagging, followed by cast-in-place concrete. Control of rock overbreak proved difficult with large-diameter two-pass operation, and invert degradation led to train derailments. To mitigate these risks, the ECT was supported using one-pass, precast, bolted, gasketed concrete segments reinforced with steel fiber alone. Tunneling operations were very successful and experienced no significant delays or claims. As a result of the positive ECT experience with steel fiber-reinforced segments, Hatch Mott MacDonald, LLC (HMM), McNally/Kiewit (MK) joint venture, CSI/Hanson (CSI/H) joint venture, and the NEORSD performed a test program to evaluate replacement of steel fibers with synthetic fibers in segmental rings. This paper presents the laboratory and field testing program, construction, and results of the synthetic-fiber-reinforced cast-in-place (CIP) lining and concrete segments."

"In recent years, the demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has grown due to increasing demand and global supply shortage. The supply deficit of these critical elements has encouraged the search for new sources, with coal and coal byproducts as possibilities. Coals from certain parts of the world can be rich in REEs and can approach a total concentration of 1,000 ppm. Two Alaskan coal samples, from Healy and Wishbone Hill, were investigated for the effects of density and particle size on REE concentrations for three selected size fractions, and flotation tests were conducted on finer fractions. Additionally, bottom ash and fly ash samples from a power plant were examined for their REE concentrations. The results show that the upgrade potential for REEs on an ash basis from a whole-coal basis ranges from 2:1 for the Wishbone Hill samples to 4:1 for the Healy coal samples. Flotations of the finer fractions of the two coal samples, conducted under similar conditions, revealed higher concentrations of REEs in the tailings. Both coal samples had comparatively higher contents of light-group rare earth elements (LREEs) than heavy-group rare earth elements (HREEs). REE content trends for the power-plant products on an ash basis indicate that fly ash has slightly higher concentrations of both LREEs and HREEs than bottom ash. IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs), also known as rare earth metals, and their compounds are vital components in industrial, automotive, petrochemical, defense and medical applications. Dysprosium in combination with other elements is used in laser materials and nuclear control applications. Neodymium is present in magnets that are used in the manufacture of wind turbines and hybrid cars. Europium, terbium and yttrium are used in devices that have visual displays such as computer screens and laptops (Haxel, Hedrick and Greta, 2002; Bunzli, 2013). REEs pose fewer environmental problems of disposal and recycling than their conventional heavy metal counterparts (Haxel, Hedrick and Greta, 2002). They are key materials for radar systems, avionics, modern national defense and satellites (Cammarata and Sieradzki, 1994; Hedrick, 2010; Martin, 2010; Szumigala and Werdon, 2011; Cordier, 2011; Bunzli, 2013). REEs are often classified into light-group rare earth elements (LREEs) and heavy-group rare earth elements (HREEs). This classification is primarily based on the electronic configuration in the outermost shell. LREEs, ranging from lanthanum to gadolinium, have a single or no spinning electron in the outermost 4f shell while HREEs, ranging from terbium to lutetium, have paired electrons in the 4f shell. This difference in electronic configuration is responsible for the differences in physical and chemical properties of REEs."

The 31st annual American Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW) will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013. Each year, one living inductee, two Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, an industry partnership award, as well as a special citation, are recognized by the MFSW for their respective contributions to the mining industry. James D. Toole, past president and chief executive officer of Southwest Energy LLC, will be the Hall of Fame inductee, guest of honor, and featured speaker at the awards banquet. Toole founded Southwest Energy LLC in 1973 and is credited with introducing innovative explosive technology, providing even greater value to its mining customers. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Joseph M. Keane, principal metallurgical engineer for SGS Metcon Research/KD Engineering, and Sean D. Dessureault, associate professor at the University of Arizona. Keane is recognized for his metallurgical expertise, especially in design development and pollution abatement. Dessureault is recognized for his advanced mining research, with more than 25 journal publications, and his entrepreneurship as the founder and chief executive officer of two mineral-related companies. To honor mining?s past, the hall of fame will induct Bartolomé de Medina for his invention of the patio process for recovering silver; Ben Williams for his management of the Copper Queen Mine in Bisbee, AZ; Charles E. Mills for his contributions at Morenci and Inspiration Copper and founding Apache Powder Co. and The Valley National Bank; John S. Finlay and Edwin B. Royle for their invention of the mucking machine; and Louis Caryl Graton for his ore deposits research and teaching economic geology at Harvard University.

Based on the mechanical essence that large-scale plastic failure zone appears in all or part of surrounding rock in soft rock roadway, the numerical simulation method is used to study the rectangular roadway in layered rock strata. It is clarified necessary conditions must be met for soft rock: firstly, the strength condition is that the maximum confining pressure is greater than the uniaxial compressive strength of rock strata. Secondly, the stress environment condition is that the ratio of maximum confining pressure to minimum confining pressure is greater than 3. Thirdly, the angle condition is that The direction of principal stress action enables the plastic zone of weak rock layers to fully develop. At the same time, the quantitative description method of soft rock is given, and the soft rock roadway is redefined. Soft rock roadway refers to the roadway that meets the strength conditions, stress environment conditions, and rock structure angle conditions under certain surrounding rock conditions and in-situ stress environment conditions. After the excavation of the roadway, a large-scale plastic failure can be formed, that is, a butterfly-shaped plastic zone is formed, and the conventional support cannot be adapted. It is difficult to support in engineering. It provides a theoretical basis and engineering analysis method for the identification of soft rock roadway, and the research results have engineering value Soft rock tunnel engineering in coal mines constitutes a vital aspect of soft rock engineering. This field broadly encompasses rock engi- neering concerning large plastic deformations, e.g., soft rock slope engineering and soft rock tunnel engineering. The intricate geological conditions encountered in soft rock tunnel engineering present a significant challenge to support, which has harmed coal production in China. China leads global raw coal production with the annual output of 4.6 billion tons. Annual tunnel excavation supporting this production spans approximately 11,000 km, with over 10% of these tunnels classified as soft rock formations. Soft rock is commonly associated with soft rock tunnels due to their prevalence in engineering projects. However, reaching a consensus on the definition of soft rock has long been an enduring challenge for scholars and engineers. Numerous definitions have been proposed, includ- ing descriptive, index, and engineering definitions. For instance, the International Society for Rock Mechanics defines soft rock based on its uniaxial compressive strength σ ranging from 0.5 to 25 MPa. China's Engineering Rock Body Standards, established in 1994 (GB 50218-94), take a qualitative and quantitative approach to classifying rocks. Rocks are categorized as hard or soft based on criteria such as hammering sound, fragmentation, water immersion effects, and weath- ering degree. Additionally, the integrity of rock bodies is assessed across five categories intact, relatively intact, soft fractured, fractured, and extremely fractured. This classification considers factors like the number and spacing of structural planes, their combination, and the types of structures. Descriptive and index-based definitions fall under the category of geological soft rocks, providing a comprehensive geological perspective on the surface features or strength characteristics. However, these definitions have limitations in engineering practice, which leads to contradic- tions. For instance, rocks with uniaxial compressive strength less than 25 MPa may not exhibit soft rock characteristics if the tunnel is shal- low with low horizontal stress levels. Conversely, rocks with compressive strength exceeding 25 MPa at sufficient depth and high horizontal stress may exhibit soft rock characteristics. Definitions originating from engineering practice have emerged after realizing the inadequacy of discussing soft rocks without considering engineering. For instance, Dong's loose circle theory defines soft rocks as rocks with a loose circle thickness exceeding 1.5 m, which chal- lenges conventional supports. This intuitive definition, widely accepted by engineering professionals, emphasizes the difficulty in supporting tunnels due to extensive damage. However, various tunnel damage poses a challenge in relying solely on the loose circle thickness of tunnels for determining soft rocks. He introduced the concept of engineering soft rocks, which are defined as rock formations exhibiting significant plastic deformations under applied engineering force. Two fundamental mechanical properties of soft rocks are identified the critical softening load and critical soft- ening depth. Automation and robotics are the keys to new intelligent autonomous mining systems which can remove operators from the hazardous and stressful mining environment and provide the tools for greater productivity. This pa-per presents the components necessary for a mining Intelligent Task Control System (ITCS) in dynamic unstructured mining environments. The proposed concept is applied to develop the ITCS for an autonomous excavator. The design and implementation of a fuzzy logic controller for an excavator that uses force/torque sensor feedback to complete excavation tasks is presented. Initial experimental results are also given.

The study investigates the segregation of iron and titanium in iron sand concentrate pellets reduced using coal under an isothermal-temperature gradient profile. The results show that metallic iron migrates to the surface while titanium and other oxides move to the center of the pellet. The study provides insights into the reduction process and the behavior of iron and titanium during heat treatment.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been used for the construction of various tunnels for mining projects for the purpose of access, conveyance of ore and waste, drainage, exploration, water supply and water diversion. Several mining projects have seen the successful and economic beneficial use of TBMs, and there is an increasing awareness of the benefits of TBMs for mining projects. Key technical considerations for the use of TBMs for the construction of tunnels for mining projects include geological issues (rock type, rock alteration, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, ground water inflows), depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, TBM constraints, minimum tunnel size, tunnel support requirements, contractor and labor experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer key project schedule benefits with high rates of progress, which is a unique economic advantage recognized for mining projects where timing is of the essence in order to advance mining development and achieve early startup for operations. A thorough evaluation of the anticipated ground conditions should be performed as part of the decision to adopt a TBM for a mining project. Minimum specifications for TBMs are necessary in order to prevent the incorrect type of TBM from being used. Appropriate geotechnical investigations are necessary in order to provide key information on the anticipated subsurface conditions for careful planning and design of the proposed tunnel alignment. The overall site and geological conditions associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs for some mining projects due to a perceived higher risk.

Public Law 75-87, the Surface :mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), Section 516(b) requires the underground coal mining operator to "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material carnage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonably foreseeable use of such surface lands, except inn those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner . . .?. The Congress also directed the Secretary of the Interior to promulgate regulations to implement the law. As a result, the control of subsidence from underground coal mining to minimize surface damage has become the mandate of a Federal law. This paper discusses the mechanics of subsidence and the effects of subsidence on ground features and also summarizes some of the measures which have been used to minimize the possibility of damage to surface structures as a result of subsidence due to underground coal mining.

Adequate understanding of the subsurface conditions along the alignment of a planned tunnel is key for managing project risk. For achieving this understanding, geotechnical borings are conducted during design. Where their spacing cannot reduce the risk of encountering differing site conditions (DSC) in-between borings to an acceptable level, supplemental exploration methodologies or data evaluation approaches may be required to bridge the data gap. This paper compares the exploration design approaches of recent tunnel boring machine (TBM) and microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) projects in the quaternary deposits along the Eastern Seaboard, the glacial geology of the Pacific Northwest, the sedimentary rocks of the South, and metamorphic rocks in western Germany, describing their respective effectiveness of managing DSC risk.

Historically, mica usage has been low because of limited availability; as a by-product of many small processors, who have lacked motivation for extensive R & D. The discovery of a 30 million ton deposit of 85-90% pure phlogopite, when existing markets are only 300,000 tonnes annually, forced the search for large volume new markets. Increasing costs of energy, petrochemicals, plastics and glass fibers, and environmental constraints on asbestos usage, have led to new opportunities for mica as a reinforcing filler. Extensive research and developments; in beneficiating, processing and treating mica, has been necessary to satisfy these new markets.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the feasibility of incorporating in situ stope leaching into active underground metal mines. Stope leaching, a modified in situ leaching technique, proposes to recover metals by leaching fragmented ore in existing underground openings and collecting and processing the metal-bearing solution to recover the valuable metals. If leaching solutions escape from the stope, either through geologic discontinuities or highly permeable zones in the rock, valuable metals dissolved in the solution may be lost. Escaping solutions may also contaminate ground waters. Consequently, in fractured rock, the characteristics of the fractures in the vicinity of the leaching stope must be understood before introducing actual leach solutions into the stope. Effectively characterizing a rock mass requires the integration of several disciplines including structural geology, borehole geophysics, hydrology, geochemistry, and mining engineering. This paper will focus on the general geologic and geophysical techniques that can be used to characterize the rock mass at an underground simulated stope leaching site. The results of several geophysical logging methods, tested at the site, are compared to the geologic core descriptions. Then, the? effectiveness of the different geophysical techniques in delineating fracture zones will be assessed. Knowledge gained through the geologic and geophysical analyses can be used to supplement results from hydrologic testing. This information can also be utilized in designing blast patterns and developing strategies for controlling or blocking movement of escaping leach solutions.
