Early in the 60's the author served as Chairman of the Engineering Foundation's Coordinating Committee on Air Pollution Research. One of our objectives was the development of a study on the measurement of stack emissions. Three publications of the Foundation resulted from these efforts to focus attention on the stack sampling problem.1,2,3 Two of these were annotated bibliographies covering 197 references. The third reported the results of a workshop meeting at which some 21 individuals from research institutes, industry and government discussed the possible and probable areas of research that would add to or increase the ease, precision and utility of sampling gaseous and particulate matter emitted from stacks. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has had in its Power Test Codes a Standard Code for Determining the Dust Concentration in a Gas stream4 since 1941, The American Industrial Hygiene Association has published, in its Air Pollution Manual,5 a Section on Stack Sampling. Industry and regulatory agency requirements for stack sampling have utilized some modification of the alternatives in methodology. The modelling of phenomena by nonlinear dynamic Systems Theory representations require the specification and identification of suitable models of the phenomenon and the availability of good optimization algorithms to determine the optimal controls. Stochastic disturbances and difficulties of monitoring the process lead invariably, otherwise, to suboptimal performance. It will be shown that an algorithm can be formulated which will simultaneously identify and optimize such a system. The properties of the algorithm will be derived and its convergence to an optimal control proved. Some results of actual applications will be presented and it will be shown how this approach generalizes easily to optimal control of the actual processing system. These results generalize those of optimal learning and input conditioning.

With the increase of new mine development in the past several years, many coal mines have decided to self- perform the design and construction for their slope development projects. The development process of determining the proper configuration is challenging, and a major economical consideration. Greenbrier Smokeless Minerals engineering staff and consultants, along with DSI/American Commercial, developed a support configuration that was best suited for their slope. The developmental process took into consideration the length of slope, depth of slope at the high-wall transition, economics of a single or multiple entries, waterproofing, stresses on the steel supports and lagging during the backfilling operation. This paper describes the developmental concept of using a single entry, side by side configuration, using steel ?Banjo String? supports with steel plank lagging, to develop a long term permanent installation in a cut and cover application.

A conveyor belt fire presents a serious safety hazard in an underground coal mine. A review of underground coal mine fires involving conveyor belts which occurred within the past two decades was made by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Belt fires that occurred during this period of time have burned as much as 610 m of belting before the fire was extinguished. In an effort to improve safety, MSHA has undertaken a program to study the flammability of conveyor belts in large and small-scale tests. Large-scale tests were conducted on various types of mine conveyor belts using a range of airflows from 0 to 6.1 m/s. Data were obtained to evaluate the effect of airflow on flame spread and other combustion properties of the conveyor belts. The results from the large-scale tests were utilized to develop a new MSHA laboratory-scale test for evaluating the flame resistance of conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. Agreement of results based on a pass/fail criterion was obtained between the large-scale test and new laboratory-scale test. A summary of test results from the new test is shown for different conveyor belt formulations. MSHA also performed a series of fire tests with wood samples using the new laboratory-scale tunnel apparatus. These tests were conducted at airflows from 0.5 to 5.1 m/s to determine the effect on flame spread and burn damage. The data were also analyzed to determine if wood could be used as a calibration standard. The results indicate the flame spread behavior of the wood follows trends similar to results obtained with conveyor belts. The data did not show the precision needed to use wood as a calibration standard. MSHA intends through rulemaking procedures to replace the "20g" conveyor belt acceptance test with the new laboratory-scale test. MSHA also plans to implement a voluntary acceptance program. Under this program, a. conveyor belt manufacturer could obtain an MSHA acceptance for belts meeting the new test criterion. A belt accepted under the voluntary program could then be used underground. Use of conveyor belts meeting the new test would limit the propagation of fire and reduce the probability of igniting other combustibles in the belt entry.

Due to the rapidly increasing production rates and deepening of mine working areas, there is a drastic rise in the number of thermal issues to be addressed for maintaining a safe mine environment. As high temperatures and humidity in underground mines could affect the health and performance of workers, and ultimately the production rate, it is necessary to provide a properly controlled safe environment. The backfilling of stopes in metal, non-metal mines results in different thermo-physical properties for the hanging, side and foot walls, modeling of which is not provided by any existing mine climate simulation software. This paper presents the modeling of such a single stope using the MULTIFLUX (MF) software, developed at the University of Nevada, Reno. A special case is presented in this paper, where a case study from the Homestake mine in the US with a drift and ramp connected to a stope with high Virgin Rock Temperature (VRT) and various spot heat sources is modeled in MULTIFLUX and CLIMSIM, and the results are compared against each other. Another case is presented in which the stope of the previous case is modeled with walls, each having a different set of thermo-physical properties. These results are compared with the former results to analyze the effect of anisotropic properties.

Flame cutting and welding is one of the major causes of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines. On May 20, 2006, a flame cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On January 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that resulted in sealing of the mine for an extended period. Finally, on March 19, 1992, an explosion at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine that was caused by welding resulted in four fatalities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of fires and explosions. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations, and MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The results were used to identify and compare differences between flame cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, Eastern and Western mines, low seam and high seam mines, room and pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices and interventions were developed to reduce the number of fires and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this work. A pilot scale study was performed to evaluate the potential for gravity concentration of gold from -13 mm (-1/2"), crushed ore from Ester Dome, Alaska. 9.04 tonnes (9.94 tons) of crushed ore were sampled and processed through a Pan-American jig -Wifley table pilot plant. Plant products were sampled for assay and material balance calculations. Gold recovery through one stage of jigging and two stages of tabling was 17.4% at a concentration ratio of 615:1. Concentrate grade was 766.3 g/tonne (22.4 oz/ton). The feed grade to the plant was calculated at 1.71 g/tonne (0.050z/ton). Jig tailings, primary table tailings and secondary table tailings grades were 1.44 g/tonne (0.042), 1.30 g/tonne (0.038), and 5.47 g/tonne (0.16 oz/ton) respectively. Significant, coarse, free milling gold values were shown to remain in the jig tailings. Concentrate mineralogy is discussed.

Mining tailings are slurry byproducts of mineral recovery. They generate serious environmental risks due to their toxicity when exposed to water and oxygen. Studies focus on eco-friendly alternatives for mitigating these environmental impacts. Processing these tailings enables a sustainable mineral production model through circular economy practices. This study evaluates using gold mining tailings to recover gold and produce bricks. Flotation tests obtained a concentrate with 86.66% gold recovery, containing sulfides (pyrite, arsenopyrite) and a tailing with silicates and oxides suitable for brick manufacturing and ornamental pieces. This approach promotes eco-friendly solutions and a greener approach to mining operations.

The Tren Urbano project in Puerto Rico includes a 19 m diameter tunnel constructed by the stacked drift method, which involves installation of a pre-supported concrete arch using multiple tunnels. Geotechnical conditions consisted of weak rock and highly weathered, unstable alluvial soils. Due to low cover, reinforcement of the arch was required. Ground behavior ranged from firm ground to mixed-face to raveling and flowing ground. Consequently, construction of the individual drifts involved many different soft-ground techniques such as steel set supports, shotcrete support, shield tunneling, forepoling, and consolidation grouting. During construction, the design was modified to improve constructability. Although settlement was experienced during excavation of the drifts, arch movements were within predicted limits and minimal surface settlement was observed upon excavation of the interior.

Crushed stone operations have become more difficult due to rising costs of labor and equipment, with the consequent reduction in profit margins. Competition from other operators and the encroachment of vertically integrated companies place severe restrictions on available markets. The seasonal demand for stone precludes any definite production level, and changes in productivity have to be accommodated. These influence profitability, and therefore production plans must be continuously adjusted to keep pace with rapidly changing conditions. The basic problem of stone companies seeking to maximize profits is one of balancing stone production costs, costs of inventory holding and stock-piling, marketing costs and any other charges accruing over time against the selling price of stone. Because of high peak demands, slack period production must be stored and then distributed to supplement peak period production. For a multi-plant operation, there is a need to evaluate at the same time the interaction between the plants and the various marketing sectors. In a multi-plant operation with different production capacities and production costs, stone producers are interested in the answers to the following questions: 1. How much stone should be produced at each plant in each time period? 2. What should be the optimum stone shipment from each plant to each market? 3. What are the effects on net returns and shipping plans, if production capacities are altered at the plants? These questions have many different answers that, will satisfy demands. From the point of production scheduling, the minimum production cost may be the objective. From the inventory standpoint, the best solution will be to synchronize production with sales. However, when the transportation of stone is also considered, the desired end is to achieve that delivered cost which maximizes the company f s net return. General widespread interest in fine coal cleaning circuits did not occur in the United States until the mid 1960's. Up until this period the relatively low price for which bituminous coal was sold did not justify for many operators the capital and maintenance costs associated with the beneficiation and drying of fine coal. However, with current growing interest in this area, the introduction of new types of process equipment along with modifications to existing components is occuring to maximize the recovery of coal fines. In 1973 Derrick Manufacturing Corporation introduced high frequency screening machinery into the coal industry. The first design consisted of a 4 ft. wide 18 ft. long single deck screen frame with three 100 mesh woven wire screen surfaces divided by repulping troughs for the addition of wash water. In addition, a special slotted rubber dewatering deck was installed on the discharge end of the unit to assure adequate dewatering of the screen oversize. This panel had nominal 25 mesh X 3.0" slotted openings. The machine was also equipped with a special high speed-low amplitude (3600 RPM .032" % AMP.) integral vibrator.

At the Kakogawa works of Kobe Steel. Ltd., the agglomeration facilities are composed of a pelletizing plant and sintering plant. This aim is to utilize raw materials efficiently and stabilize the raw material resources. Therefore at Kakogawa works, the blast furnaces (BF) have been operated with high pellet ratio and various developments for pellet properties have been achieved to improve the blast furnace performance. These developments include dolomite-fluxed pellets, new-porous pellets and crushed pellets. As a results of these improvements, pellets have achieved almost the same performance as sinter at high temperature regarding properties such as the softening, melting and reduction behaviour. However, some problems on shape have remained to be solved. Spherical pellets flow easily into the center of the furnace and form mixed layers of pellets and cokes. Therefore, in BF operations with these pellets it becomes more difficult to keep proper and stable gas distribution.

The porphyry copper province of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, is the largest copper producing region in the world. Most of the deposits occur in Arizona which now produces over 54% of the newly mined copper in the United" States. As the many recent discoveries are brought into production, Arizona's share of the nation's copper production will increase. The term "porphyry copper" as used in this paper includes all deposits of generally low grade disseminated copper mineralization amenable to bulk mining techniques. Therefore, copper deposits such as Pima-Mission, Twin Buttes, and Vekol where the copper mineralization occurs principally in the intruded rocks will be considered as "porphyry copper" deposits. Most of the deposits have been discovered since World War II, consequently, the southwest, and particularly southern Arizona is perhaps the most intensively explored area for copper deposits on earth. Most of the major natural resource companies in the United States and Canada maintain exploration offices in southern Arizona. To illustrate the success of exploration efforts, the location of porphyry copper deposits either known or producing prior to World War II are shown on figure 1 and the deposits discovered since World War II which are either in production or in the exploration and development stage are shown on figure 2.

A recent report to President Reagan from the Business-Higher Education Forum, entitled, "America's Competitive Challenge: Need for a National Response," (1) observes that in the recent past, ". . . much of that research, which is necessary for major breakthroughs and sustained productivity improvements, was redirected to short-term objectives ... At the same time, American universities, which conduct more than half of the nation's basic research, have suffered from an accumulated under-investment in facilities and equipment amounting to an estimated $1-4 billion." Also contributing to the decline in America's productivity, the report said, are "...weak technology transfers between government and industry and between universities and industry..." This report as well as other recent reports and articles have, reopened a subject which has long been debated but rarely resolved-- the interaction between the academic community and industry in the sponsorship and conduct of research. The subject is unfortunately, too often treated as a controversial issue involving ethics and the profit motive when, in fact, the two branches of society -- industry and academia -- are necessarily part of the same system. I would like to speak to you today on the subject of university-industry interactions and to some extent discuss the role of government in such interactions. Finally, I will make some remarks as to how this subject applies to the mining industry.

Canada has been a producer of sulphur in various forms for about 100 years, Pyrites, as a source of sulphur dioxide for the manufacture of sulphuric acid, were being mined in the 1860's. Smelter gas, for the same purpose, has been recovered since 1928. Between 1935 and 1943, and from 1952 to the present, elemental sulphur has been produced in Canada from two raw material sources and by several methods. This paper attempts to present a view of the current status of the elemental sulphur industry in Canada based on the sour gas fields of Alberta and British Columbia. Production from this source has increased rapidly in the past 12 years to make Canada one of the major sulphur producers of the world. The present industry in Canada relies mainly on sour gas sulphur and it is expected that it will continue to grow in the future. However, before describing current activity relating to sour gas it may be of interest to outline briefly the early pyrite activities, the roots of the sulphur industry in Canada.

Beneficiation studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to develop a process for concentrating phosphate minerals from the altered rock of the Phosphoria Formation. This report describes research on intermediate - and marginal-grade ores from southeast Idaho, The process developed consists of attrition scrubbing and sizing to produce a coarse concentrate; desliming at about 800 mesh (18.5 microns); flotation of the fine sands; roasting of the combined concentrates for removal of organic carbon and combined water; and leaching with SO2 for removal of magnesium and nonapatitic calcite. Results of continuous tests on three different ore types showed that approximately 80 percent of the available phosphate can be recovered at a grade suitable for phosphoric acid production. While leaching with SO2 is not necessary for all ore types, it is an important step in purifying concentrates containing excessive magnesium.

INTRODUCTION According to a recent analysis by Schiager et al.(1981), inhalation of radon daughters continues to contribute the largest risk from exposure to radioactive materials in underground uranium mines. The American National Standards Institute (1973) has published a concensus standard for radiation protection in uranium mines. According to this standard, a monitoring system for radon daughters must be capable of measuring the annual accumulated exposure in working level months within an uncertainty interval of 50% at the 95% confidence level. To satisfy this criterion, uranium mining companies in the USA have adopted a procedure consisting of single or periodic measurements of the air concentration of radon daughters. All of the measurement methods sample a known volume of air through a filter. After a specified delay interval, the filter is analyzed for radioactivity. The exposure rate from total airborne potential alpha energy in units of working level (WL) is estimated from the measured activity on the filter. For control purposes, this measurement establishes whether or not a work area is safe for occupancy by miners. For routine dosimetry, the concentration estimated from the grab sample is assigned to the appropriate work area. It is then assumed that the concentration of radon progeny is equal to the average of the two measurements at the beginning and end of the specified interval. Meanwhile, the work locations and exposure times of each miner are recorded on the daily time card and verified by the shift supervisor. Most cards provide space for 15-minute time intervals. The exposure in working-level hours (WL-hr) for each shift is obtained by summing the time spent in a given location multiplied by the exposure rate (WL) assigned to that location.The exposure of an individual miner to radon progeny is summarized on a weekly basis and commonly reviewed each month. These values are then accumulated in units of working level- months (WLM) during the calendar year. EVALUATION TECHNIQUE AND RESULTS The evaluation of grab sampling methods for monitoring exposure to radon progeny is presented in two sections. The first section examines each method individually according to accuracy, precision, and uncertainties attributed to human errors. The second section includes an analysis of procedures which are common to all measurement methods. The ultimate goal is to determine whether a specific measurement method, or grab sampling in general, can fulfill the criterion that the annual accumulated exposure of each miner be known to within ± 50% at the 95% confidence level. In addition it is essential that the above criterion be satisfied at an acceptable cost to the mining company. The results of each testing procedure are presented in terms of the contribution of the relative uncertainty in the estimates of cumulative WLM. Each of these are then combined to form a figure of merit for the complete monitoring system. The method of combining statistical uncertainties and interpretation of the results is subject to some debate. However, since all of the tested parameters enter into the final computation of WLM multiplicatively, we have used the commonly accepted procedure of combining the squares of the relative uncertainties. We have also assumed that each of the uncertainties is derived from independent random variables and the covariance of any two variables is zero. A description of each grab sampling measuring method is given in Table 1. Also included is the equation used to compute WL from the measured quantities. Accuracy (U A) Our definition of accuracy is based on the uncertainty inherent in any method which attempts to estimate potential alpha energy without unambiguously determining the concentration of the three unknown radioisotopes, RaA, RaB and RaC. (For simplicity, the RaC and RaC' nuclides are referred to in combination as RaC.) The inherent uncertainty strongly depends on the mixture of these three components at the time of measurement.

Decreasing copper content in slag is critical for improving copper recovery, where apparent viscosity is the main factor affecting the separation of matte/copper from the slag. The viscous behavior of copper converter slag was investigated during reduction process in this paper, and its non-Newtonian viscous behavior and shear thickening characteristics were clarified. The effects of silicate structure and solid particles in the melt on the slag apparent viscosity were investigated. As slag cleaning proceeded in an electric furnace, the magnetite gradually transformed into ferrous oxide, increasing the FeO/SiO2 ratio. With this ratio increased from 1.2 to 2.0, the slag structure was simplified, and its apparent viscosity decreased from 0.26 to 0.12 Pa·s at 1523 K. The iron phase was excessively reduced to metallic state; the slag contained metallic copper-iron alloy particles, increasing apparent viscosity. The apparent viscosity and phase structure of the slag corresponding to the iron phase reduction process were analyzed in detail; the results obtained in the present study are of great significance to the reasonable control of the converter copper slag cleaning process.

Design of the ultimate pit limit to direct long range mine planning has been a celebrated problem in the mining industry, and in mining academia, since 1965. Although many papers have been presented on this topic, even today, there is not a single solution technique which is widely accepted and considered universally best. Many philosophical differences exist among the pit planners concerning the use of different methods and it appears that resistance is very strong towards accepting other techniques if you are a believer in one. Whatever the case might be, the pit parameterization technique for the ultimate pit limit design is the latest and takes a different approach than its predecessors. There are already a number of papers which discuss the concepts involved (Francois-Bongarcon, 1976; 1978; 1980; 1981); however, the aim of this paper is to fill in some of the gaps which are thought to be missing in the previous discussions and, in addition, to present the recent research done on the subject at the Centre de Geostatistique de l?Ecole de Mines de Paris in Fontainbleau, France. This paper is divided into two parts. The first part will discuss practical aspects and interpretations of pit parameterization concepts with- out using mathematical or theoretical arguments; the reader who is interested in the theory should refer to Francois-Bongarcon (1978). The second part will present an approach to obtain a complete double parameterization of reserves using an inexpensive (computer costs) single parameterization algorithm. A case study of this approach is also included.
