Since Sept. 11, 2001, the author has been asked by several mining companies and mining publications to share some of his insights on how the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and Pentagon might affect the mining industry globally. Until now, the author has been reluctant to express his thoughts in a publication that could possibly fall into the hands of terrorists and give them some ideas that they may not have been previously considering. However, the author discussed the contents of this article with several friends and acquaintances in the international intelligence community. They said that nothing commented on here is new to the terrorists. Potential terrorist targets Sources within the worldwide intelligence gathering community have told the author that current intelligence data indicates that it is likely that the Islamic fundamentalist groups responsible for the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001will likely be directing their effort at foreign business entities. Any overseas or any domestic businesses of highly visible companies that are part of the anti-terrorism alliance should consider themselves a potential target.

Although there was a significant improvement in the world economy, recovery in the iron and steel industry followed its traditional pattern and lagged the general economic recovery in 1983. World crude steel production increased from 645 Mt (711 million st) in 1982 to 664 Mt (732 million st) in 1983, an increase of less than 3%. Domestic iron and steel production showed a modest increase over 1982. Weekly raw steel pro¬duction levels ranged between 1.5 and 1.75 Mt (1.6 and 1.9 million st) for the last 10 months of 1983, compared with less than 1.25 Mt (1.4 million st) for the last half of 1982. The peak was 2.5 Mt (2.7 million per st) per week in 1978-79. This how level of steel operations kept most pelletizing and sintering operations at curtailed production levels. Extended shut-downs of pellet plants were also common. Pressure by management to reduce operating costs has continued with an increasing emphasis on maintaining quality and efficient unit productivity. With the extended decline, there have been significant personnel reductions in both operating and headquarters staffs. Many companies are anticipating a long-term how growth period in the iron and steel sector. Pelletizing Domestic pellet production showed a slight increase last year to about 34 Mt (38 million st), less than 50% of total capacity. What is indicative of the inevitable is the announced intention to chose down facilities, such as US Steel Corp.'s Atlantic City ore operations pellet plant at Lander, WY, and the recent aborted move by US Steel to purchase National Steel with the apparent intent to chose the National pellet plant in Keewatin, MN. There is excess domestic pellet capacity that will not be needed. The question is what form attrition will take. South American pellets can be brought into the Chicago area at a cost competitive with Great Lakes plants. This raises the possibility that imported pellets can, in fact, displace domestic pellets at almost any US steel plant. The need to re duce total production costs at domestic pelletizing plants is crucial. Efforts to reduce fuel costs for pelletizing have focused on re placing natural gas or fuel oil with coal. More recently, petroleum coke has become available at an attractive cost, but systems must cope with its higher sulfur con tent, which limits its potential The direct firing of grate-kiln systems with pulverized coal hay been fully proven. The use of solic fuel in the straight-grate process however, is still being developer and no straight-grate system i running on solid fuel alone. The further development o coal-water slurry systems may provide a suitable fuel for both systems. It would appear, how ever, that the same ash quality restriction would hold for coal water systems as for direct-firin systems. So, the choice is based of the relative cost and convenience of a wet-grinding system with additives, compared with a dry-grind direct-fired unit. The high-temperature (two stage) heat recuperation system installed at US Steel's Minnta plant (Step III) has provided the fuel savings anticipated, any modification of additional in durating lines is planned. Other operators are hooking at similar heat recuperation improvement. Another area of potential cost savings has been in the reduction of bentonite requirements. A CCI's Tihden plant, major improvements have been made in this area. Progressive bentonit reductions were achieved over several years from the 8- to 9-kg (16- to 18-lb per st) range to the 5-k (12-1b) level by progressive moisture reductions and chose attention to operating practice. This paper presents the preliminary test results obtained using a 0.38-kg/s (3,000-lb/hr) beta prototype MagMill. In processing Upper Freeport coal, the beta prototype recovered 82 % of the weight of the feed and 91 % of the heat content while reducing the potential emissions of sulfur by 61%. Pyritic sulfur in the MagMill product was reduced by 78% compared with that in the feed. For all runs, the mill product particle size was controlled to between 70% and 80% -741m (200 mesh). Recoveries of mercury, arsenic and selenium ranged from 35% to 45% of the amounts found in the feed. Power draw was reduced by 26%, and mill throughput was increased by 9% compared to the pulverizer operating with no magnetic separator attached.

To deal with an unexpected event such as fire, prevention and preparedness are important elements in an underground mine's strategic plan. The purpose is to prevent afire before it initiates and to be prepared to deal with it when it does occur. This paper highlights a technology that may be used by the mining workforce to minimize such occurrences. It discusses thermal imaging cameras and their many applications to detect equipment failures or hot spots before they develop into afire. It also evaluates the feasibility of using thermal imaging cameras for emergency responders to assist them during exploration, rescue and fire fighting efforts. These thermal imaging systems allow rescue personnel to see in darkness and through dense smoke, thus making it easier to locate heated areas and missing or trapped personnel.

The research deals with the study of the quality indicators in the productive process and its use for the consuming market, for two types of ores: industrial sand and crushed stone. Companies who represent the profile of the São Paulo producing market in its respective modalities well produce the selected cases. The development of the studies have to be, for the application of consistent methodological models of the fundamentals of the Engineering of Quality, especially how much to the statistical control of processes and its trustworthiness, of form that the results of the research can serve as referential in the boarding for other generic cases of the mineral industry.

The ultimate recovery in a heap leaching operation is related to the degree of exposure of the valuable minerals in comminuted particles. Recently, high-resolution cone beam x-ray microtomography (XMT) has been used to determine this parameter. XMT technology consists of examining the extent of mineral exposure for each size fraction of ore in 3D, then, by algebraic calculations, the ultimate recovery can be estimated for different particle size distributions (PSD). To confirm the usefulness of the XMT technology for mineral exposure analysis, column tests were performed to determine ultimate recovery using three PSDs for two composites obtained from the copper heap leaching operation at Zaldivar-Chile.

Comparisons of metal-price histories to monetary and other economic data support the argument that the supply of and demand for money are no less important in the determination of price than are the supply and demand of the commodity itself. That these relationships should exist is evident in the price identity and they are consistent with monetary theory. The patterns developed have limited usefulness as predictors, but their recognition is essential for the construction of price scenarios for planning purposes.

The major source of water for Southern Nevada is Lake Mead. However, the existing pump station located on Lake Mead is inadequate for one of the fastest growing areas in the United States. In order to keep up with the increasing demand for water in Las Vegas, a parallel system is being constructed. The intake for this system is being constructed approximately 68.58m (225ft) below the surface of Lake Mead. The lake tap consists of installing casing and secant piles to support the shaft collar, excavating a 21.34m (70ft) deep intake shaft, and installing a3.66m (12ft) diameter steel liner.

The name Perlite applies to both a hydrated volcanic glass containing from 2% to 5% combined water and to the lightweight material that is produced from expanding the sized volcanic glass. Upon heating, Perlite expands to about twenty times its original volume which results in a material of low density, low thermal conductivity, and high sound absorpt'ion. Perlite ore is mined by open pit methods and is crushed and sized to provide specific gradations for expanding into products used in acoustical tile, built- up roofing, filtration, lightweight concrete and horticultural applications, among others. In 1983, the U.S. production of crude Perlite came from 12 mines and 6 western states, with apparent consumption and production estimated to be about 6% lower than 1982. The average price per ton was slightly higher than in 1982.

"In a very real sense, Butte, MT is where the copper came from that won two world wars. The price for that unrestricted mining and smelting of copper came due in 1983 when Butte was declared a Superfund site.One of the most complex remnants of this mining history is the Parrot Tailings site. The Parrot smelter operated from 1881 to 1910, moving Upper Silver Bow Creek to the south and depositing approximately 283,000 m3 (370,000 cu yd) of waste material adjacent to Upper Silver Bow Creek. Additional mixed waste from other processing sites deposited below the Parrot tailings at the Northside Tailings, Diggings East and Blacktail Creek Berm total approximately 171,000 m3 (224,000 cu yd) of contaminated material. As part of the Superfund remedy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed leaving all these wastes in place. This proposal prompted a detailed criticism by several geoscientists familiar with the site. The EPA’s 2006 Record of Decision (ROD) did in fact leave these wastes in place, which set the stage for a series of studies that continue to refine how best to protect extensive completed Superfund Remediation downstream of Upper Silver Bow Creek. History of the Parrott Mine and tailingsPlacer gold was discovered in Silver Bow Creek, the headwaters of the Clark Fork River only a few miles from the Continental Divide in 1864. This discovery led to a stampede of placer and lode claims. One of the first lode claims located was the Parrot lode, located in the fall of 1864. Progress for developing a mine at the Parrott was slow, and it was not until 1876 that one of the original locators encountered a rich vein of chalcocite. Butte had its first copper mine.The Parrott Mine was patented in 1879 and by 1881 the Parrot, having lost a “t”, concentrator and smelter were built. The smelter and concentrator were an immediate success with a considerable market for processing the district’s rich copper ore. In 1885, the employees of the Parrot smelter bought the Butte Reduction Works, another smelter. In 1885, dams were built on Silver Bow Creek to contain various tailings and related processing byproducts (Fig. 1).By 1890, the various smelters in Butte rendered Butte’s air quality as suffocating (Fig. 2). An 1889 funeral procession was rumored to have gotten lost in the thick smelter smoke and somehow ended up at the Centennial Brewery. A city ordinance was passed late in 1890 in an attempt to control smoke. The Parrot smelter employed approximately 500 men by 1890. Through the 1890s, the tailings produced grew from approximately 91 t/d (100 stpd) to more than 181 t/d (200 stpd). Copper values in the tailings were initially as high as 4 percent, but as the processing improved that was reduced to 1.5 percent."

This paper describes the formulation of mine ventilation network optimization as a standard nonlinear programming problem and the solution of the problem using the generalized reduced gradient (GRG) method. In general, the GRG method is regarded as one of the most effective and efficient methods for solving large-scale nonlinear programming problems. The variables considered in the network optimization include air quantity, regulator pressure loss, and fan pressure for each branch. Each of the variables is constrained by lower and upper bounds. This facilitates proper assignments of ventilation requirements and provides a great flexibility to include various situations encountered in mine ventilation. The objective of the network optimization is to minimize the overall air power consumed by or supplied to the network; whereas the constraints are, in addition to the variable bounds, the two fundamental network laws: Kirchhoffs voltage law and Kirchhoffs current law. A computer program has been developed based on the GRG method for the network optimization. An example of network with 18 branches, 8 regulators and 3 fans is included for illustration.

"It is not surprising that the most popular key takeaway from the Developing Diversity in Mining workshop (see box) held on the first day of the SME Arizona Conference in December was, “Have more parties!”The adage that mining professionals work hard and play hard was clearly demonstrated at the two-day conference in the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa in Tucson, AZ. Nearly 550 participants, some of whom had left behind frigid temperatures and thick parkas in their hometowns, attended a full slate of technical sessions, shared industry experiences and knowledge, reconnected with buddies in the industry, and made strategic new contacts in the conference’s collegial environment, aided by the mild Arizona winter.To start off the technical sessions, John Mansanti, president and chief executive officer of Crystal Peak Minerals and 2017 SME president, entertained a packed lecture room with his keynote lecture on “Tariffs, Embargos, and Cartels ... Oh My! A Perspective on Potash.” Mansanti gave the audience the benefit of his more than 35 years of experience at companies including Barrick Gold, Newmont Mining Corp., Placer Dome, Freeport-McMoRan and Intrepid Potash, where he was senior vice president for operations, technology and strategy. At the luncheon, Justin Cross, general manager of Freeport-Mc- MoRan’s Bagdad operations, spoke on how the role of a leader in mining is transforming from one based on technical expertise to one based on the ability to collaborate, to lead and to adapt to changes in technologies and skill sets, in his talk on “Knowing When to Learn, When to Lead and When to Manage.”"

Convergence measurement across the 17.4-m (57-ft) high shaft station/loading pocket at Mt. Taylor provided continuing verification of stability and safety. Three levels of instrumentation, consisting of three lines each, were installed and monitored. The instrumentation showed that the flexible lining restrained the adjacent rock. The flexible lining consisted of pea gravel with neat cement between rock and liner plate, wooden crush blocks between liner plate and steel ring beams. The loading pocket is elliptical, 11.6 x 9.6 m (38 x 31.5 ft) inside diameter. The crush blocks were designed to allow 15 cm (6 in.) of convergence. Maximum predicted convergence was 7.0 cm (2.75 in.), and 5.7 cm (2.25 in.) was measured. Convergence measurements also demonstrated decreasing deformation with respect to elapsed time and distance from the measurement station to the temporary bottom of the shaft excavation.

This paper relates to hydrometallurgical studies on the recovery of soluble aluminum values from aluminum-bearing ores, i.e., Georgia clays. At least 50% of the soluble alumina values were recovered by leaching the calcined clays from aqueous solutions, comprising simultaneously contacting a stream containing an effective amount of a reducing agent such as sulfur dioxide and a stream containing an effective amount of an oxidizing agent such as chlorine gas for a time sufficient to dissolve alumina. The recovery of alumina from this aqueous slurry of the calcined clay by leaching with sulfur dioxide and chlorine gas showed much better results than that by leaching with concentrated sulfuric acid and/or concentrated hydrochloric acid at 100O C. The leaching reactions between the aqueous slurry of the calcined clay, chlorine gas, and sulfur dioxide were strong exothermic reactions for several hours, requiring no external heating.

CRYSTALLIZATION from aqueous solution is a simple and old method for the recovery of metal values from leach solution. Practically all the methods for the recovery of aluminum from clay are based on the crystallization of an aluminum salt from the leach solution. Differences in solubilities may be used to advantage for separating two metals from the same leach solution. The classical method of Marignac (1866), which makes use of the difference in solubilities of K2TaF7 and K2NbOF5 to separate niobium from tantalum, has been used successfully in the manufacture of these metals (Fig. 10-1). The slurry containing the metal oxides is dissolved in 70 % hydrofluoric acid, diluted, and heated near boiling. A potassium salt is added in sufficient quantity to form the complex fluorides of the niobium and tantalum present. The solution is filtered and allowed to cool. At room temperature most of the tantalum salt crystallizes out while the niobium remains in solution.

INTRODUCTION The authors, by means of this paper, will attempt to show the role of Induced Polarization and Resistivity surveys in the discovery of the orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Limited (N.P.L.). In this paper, we will also attempt to show the importance of conducting large enough surveys in order to properly evaluate the results obtained from these surveys. LOCATION The orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Limited (N.P.L.) are located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, central British Columbia (52°30' north, 122°16' west) (See Fig. 1). The property lies approximately 28 miles north of Williams Lake, B.C. and can be reached by way of 10 miles of newly improved road from McLeese Lake, on the Cariboo Highway. The area in and around Gibraltar Mines has a moderate topographic relief with elevations between 3,500 and 4,100 feet. {EARLY HISTORY AND GEOLOGY The present Gibraltar Mines property before amalgamation consisted of the Pollyanna property (Duval-Canex) and the Gibraltar property (original Gibraltar Mines) as well as some Coast Silver and McLeese Lake Copper claims (See Fig. 2). The Pollyanna property was first described in the 1917 B.C. Minister of Mines Report which referred to it as the "Rainbow Group". The development at that time consisted of several open-cuts on copper bearing quartz veins.

At Lupin mine gold is spatially and genetically linked to zones of hydrothermal alteration in iron-formation which are symmetrically developed adjacent to late Archean quartz veins. Immediately adjacent to the veins, coarse grained, typically gold- and sulfide-poor, calc-silicate rocks are often present. These rocks comprise hedenbergite + quartz ± grossular garnet ± epidote ± scheelite ± calcite. Sulfides (pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and loellingite) and gold are concentrated in the next zone and occur with hornblende-rich rocks comprised of hornblende, quartz, hedenbergite and grunerite. Furthest from the veins are gold- and sulfide-poor, grunerite-rich iron formation comprising grunerite, quartz, hornblende and sometimes magnetite. Although the alteration assemblages have similarities with skarns, they develop in iron formation, and are at best indirectly related to intrusive igneous rocks. Geological and geochemical data clearly indicate the calc-silicate rocks are metasomatic in origin.

The National Italian Regulation concerning environment protection imposes that industrial areas are provided with systems aimed at preventing the circulation of contaminated groundwater. These systems can be static or dynamic and operate basically by intercepting the contaminated flow. Their effectiveness, realization time and costs depend on the intervention type and on the features of the specific site. The selection of the best solution is complex and the results obtained by this selection may be affected by residual risks related to the uncertainty of the hydrogeological and geotechnical characterization of the site. With regard to the industrial area of Portovesme, located in the south of Sardinia, the paper presents the analysis of alternative interventions aimed at the protection of the groundwater. The attention is focused on the evaluation of their effectiveness, impact on environment and, finally, time and costs of construction.
