Manufacturers of brick and tile are showing growing interest in the possibility of manufacture of a clay bonded block. The block would have the shape of concrete block, but would be made without the use of Portland cement, Instead, the block would be made' from mixtures' of an aggregate and the present raw materials of the brick industry. The finished units would weigh 20 to 30 pounds and meet the specifications for Grade A concrete block. The present status of the clay block development shows one manufacturer actually in production of these units$, two additional manufacturers are attempting production and many manufacturers are actively engaged in development work. At least four major research laboratories are engaged in the development program. There are several different processes available for clay block production. These processes differ primarily in the type of aggregate used or in the type of forming operation selected. I would like summarize these possible methods.

During the past 50 years, significant research has been performed in the ecology and physiology of plants that colonize soils containing elevated concentrations of heavy metals. Similar work has also been performed on plants that are able to survive acidic and saline environments. Efforts have focused on the ecological analysis of plant communities that occur over a range of metalliferous mining wastes. Investigations have been performed on the mechanisms that allow selected varieties of plant species to survive in normally phytotoxic environments and on the potential applications of metal-tolerant varieties of plant species. The purpose is the remediation and reclamation of mining wastes and soils that contain unusually high concentrations of so-called heavy metals. Characteristics of some mineral wastes Metalliferous mining wastes present special environmental restoration problems because of their toxicity. Potential toxicities are mostly caused by residual metals derived from weathering of low-grade ore or the waste products of mineral processing. In cases where pyrite forms a part of the mining waste, acid generation by oxidation may exacerbate the toxicity problem by promoting heavy-metal mobilization in aqueous solution.

The Empire mine began operations on 1963. Low grade Magnetite ore is processed to produce iron pellets for blast furnace feed. Three expansions were added to the original plant and several equipment upgrades have been completed to improve the plant performance as the ore characteristics have been changing through the life of the mine. Size reduction is carried out by two grinding stages, the first one using autogenous grinding and the second one using pebble mills. Pebble crushing is also used to break the critical size fraction and increases primary grinding capacity. This paper describes changes in the configuration of the grinding circuits that have helped increase plant throughput and reduce power consumption by more efficiently utilizing assets available. Understanding the different components of the size reduction circuits and plant sections has allowed shifting part of the load from one section of the plant to another without affecting plant throughput.

Golden Sunlight Mines Inc. operates an open-pit gold mine and cyanidation plant about 11km (7 miles) northeast of Whitehall, MT. Golden Sunlight is a subsidiary of Placer Dome US Inc. Mining is accomplished with conventional open pit drilling, blasting and hauling methods. The mining rate is about 102 kt/d (113,000 stpd). Gold occurs as fine-grained disseminations in a pipe-shaped breccia and in immediately adjacent country rock. The ore body is low grade, averaging 2 g/t (0.059 oz per st) of gold. The metallurgical plant uses conventional carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology. Daily throughput averages 6.5 kt (7000 st). Recoveries are enhanced through a sand tailing retreatment facility while a preaeration process reduces operating costs. The low grade ore dictates that maximum mill throughput at the desired grind size be maintained. Therefore, in October 1988, an Armco Autometrics (now Denver Autometrics) particle size monitor (PSM) 400 was commissioned. The PSM 400 is an on-line instrument. It measures particle size and percent solids in a slurry stream. The PSM pulls its own sample, deareates the sample and passes it through diametrically opposed ultrasonic sensors. The unit uses ultrasonic sound to measure the deareated slurry stream's particle size and percent solids.

The Donkin-Morien Mine in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, has successfully completed the excavation of a 7.6m (25-ft) diameter access decline over a distance of 3.5km out under the Atlantic Ocean. The tunnel, completed in December 1984, was driven through a sedimentary sequence of sandstone, siltstone, mudstone and various gassy coal seams prior to intersecting the Harbour Coal Seam where development work will commence. The tunnel was driven by a Canadian prototype tunnel boring machine (TBM) manufactured by Lovat Tunnel Equipment, Inc., Toronto, Ontario. The 7.6m (25-ft) diameter full-face shielded TBM operated at various grades from 0-20%. This paper outlines the TBM design, excavation, support and backup system utilized in the drivage. Problems encountered and drivage rates will be addressed.

A number of private companies and universities have developed computer programs which can be used to simulate surface coal mining by dragline. In this paper, we briefly discuss the concept of computer simulation, compare these computer programs with each other, describe the major changes required to convert these programs to an IBM computer system, and analyze their sensitivity to inaccurate input data. We also present a summary of the required data input for each program, core storage requirements, and output results. Sources for obtaining these programs and their documentation are listed at the end of the paper.

The Cortez gold mine is located in Lander County, NR, about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of Elko. Cortez Gold Mines (CGM) is a joint venture between Placer Dome US Inc. (60% operator) and Kennecott Corp. (40%). The claims that supply oxide and refractory ore feed to the Cortez milling facility are located in both Lander and Eureka counties. These include the Cortez and Horse Canyon deposits, all operated by the joint venture. Other deposits outside the CGM claim area include Fire Creek, Buckhorn, Gold Bar and Tonkin Springs. These deposits all occur along the Battle Mountain-Eureka Trend. History Mining in the Cortez district began in 1862 with the discovery of high-grade silver ores. Grades in the hundreds of ounces per ton occurred in an area 7 km (4.5 miles) southeast of the current CGM mill site. Underground mining through the Garrison and Arctic tunnels provided the bulk of the ore production between 1864 and 1895. To a lesser extent, the Mill Canyon area also supplied ore until 1930.

Tin has been one of the very few commodities which has been covered by an international commodity agreement. It is the only metal so covered. The reason behind tin's prediliction for an agreement has been the inconsistency of the price pattern for tin during the entire 20th century. It is not surprising in view - of the wide and wild fluctuations in its price that tin has been called the Cinderella metal. An examination, for example, of prices in 1977 alone attests to the erratic behavior of the tin markets. The high was recorded on October 27 at M$1,895 per picul and the low on January 3 at M$l,314 3/8, on the Penang market, a spread in Malaysian dollars of $581 for a picul weighing 133 1/3 pounds. The first steps in international cooperation on tin were taken after the price bonanza of the First World War. Despite a lack of increased consumption, and in spite of the fact there was no shortage of mining production during the war, prices boomed. Shipping shortages and thinning stocks brought about a situation where in the U.S., industrial stocks were only 1/6 of what they had been in 1914. The boom busted early. In 1921 the tinplate industry of the world had cut its output in half and total world consumption of tin fell by 1/3. Tin producers became so concerned that they created what was called the Bandoeng Pool. It accumulated stocks held by countries now known as Indonesia and Malaysia, amounting to 28 percent of the combined production of the two countries and about 15 percent of the total world for 1921. The pool holdings were shortly exhausted and thereafter in the years 1924 to 1928, general boom conditions existed for tin.

Introduction Federal and state laws enacted to regulate coal mining and the accompanying public concern about the adverse effects that mining might have on land use have focused much attention on the subsidence of the land surfaces over underground mines. Some questions asked are: • Will abandoned mines subside in the future even though they have exhibited no surface adjustment to date? • If so, when will subsidence take place? • Can a specific surface area be affected by subsidence more than once? • What surface form will the subsidence feature take? • Is there any way to predict when subsidence will occur and end? An attempt is made here to address these questions insofar as it is possible with available data and experience of evaluation of subcritical extraction conditions. Mining that results in subsidence features can be classified as supercritical, subcritical, and critical with respect to the minimum span lengths of the worked-out rooms (Fig. 1). A complete basin will not develop fully immediately over subcritical conditions because the span lengths of the entries are less than the critical dimension (Wardell, 1983). Passageways, entries, and room-and-pillar panels are all included in the subcritical category. Because of the short span lengths, subcritical mining conditions tend to be stable over the life of the mine unless adverse geologic conditions exist (Gray et al., 1974; Dunrud, 1976). Various roof control and support procedures are employed to maintain entry stability during mining. Little information exists concerning the time factor of subsidence over areas of subcritical extraction. Data that have been collected relate to longwall mines, whereby the cavity sizes are designed large enough to induce caving behind the working faces so that complete subsidence at the surface occurs within a short period of time. The UK's National Coal Board (1975) has reduced the enormous amount of data it has collected to empirical correlations and has published these correlations in its Subsidence Engineers Handbook. The handbook states that "None of the foregoing remarks applies to pillar and stall working," with respect to the section discussing the time factor of subsidence caused by longwall mining (National Coal Board, 1975, p. 40). To understand and evaluate how time relates to subsidence above room-and-pillar mines, one must first recognize how mine cavities deteriorate and fail. The propagation of failure to the surface must then be studied, and, finally, the failures that are manifest at the surface in the form of depressions accompanied by both compressional and tensional movements must be investigated. Failure of mine cavities Any cavity beneath the earth's surface represents a condition of nonequilibrium and tends to close with time. Failure of cavities in a subcritical mine can be classified as failure of the roof, failure of the floor, failure of the supports (pillars, cribs), and elastic rebound of the rock. One mode of failure may dominate, but generally combinations of the four will occur. Also, initial instability of geologic materials and structural features and in situ stress may be unknown factors that can contribute to cavity failure. Roof failure is the most obvious opening stability problem in most operating mines. The bridging capabilities of the roof rock are dependent on the rock's material strength, geologic discontinuities, and reaction to humidity changes in the air of the mine. This type of failure may vary in magnitude from gradual flaking to massive roof falls. Mine floor instability can be manifest in the form of a general heave over a broad area or of individual pillar punching. The weaker and thicker the immediate floor material, the more prone a mine is to experience floor problems. Water seeping into an area can soften the underclay, reduce its bearing capacity, and precipitate failure of support for the overburden.

When tunneling through karstic terrain, diverse and complex karst structures are to be expected. By means of drilling ahead of the face using drill jumbos, these structures can be detected to such a degree that by applying proper support measures both open karst cavities and karst holes surrounded by boulders embedded in soft rock can be mastered without causing any break-outs. Support measures such as spiles ahead of excavation, sealing off cavities, back?lling with sand, etc. have to be planned schematically and adapted to the dimensions and formations of the karst structures on site. An essential requirement for a smooth excavation procedure is the availablility of all necessary tunneling equipment for excavation by drill and blast as well as for excavation of soil, with experienced tunnel engineers being in charge of any adaptions on site.

I'm glad this meeting is being held in New York. First, because the city is close to my home in New Jersey, only 35 minutes from Times Square ..... if I were to come to Times Square between two and three in the morning. Otherwise it takes two hours. But even more important is the fact that all of you good people from around the country and around the world will enjoy the unique experience of that warm friendly atmosphere in the greater metropolitan area, something that you won't see any place else on the face of the earth. Seriously, the greater metropolitan area has been a large part of my industrial, cultural and spiritual experience. There are many aspects of it which I find disagreeable but on net I would rather live in this area, at least for the time being, than any other area of the United States. As a consultant I find contact with financial institutions, corporate headquarters, information sources and a great many production and research facilities a valuable asset to my activity.

Barite (BaS04) is an industrial mineral with hundreds of uses. It is primarily used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. This use comprised approximately 97% of U.S. barite consumption in 1981. Barite is found in three types of deposits: bedded, residual, and vein. Bedded deposits, because of their relatively large tonnage, have been the principle target of explorationists. Increased demand for barite in the mid to late seventies prompted many companies to significantly expand their efforts in barite exploration. Barite exploration techniques currently range from outcrop walking and geochemical exploration to gravity and seismic surveys.

The implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) has evolved into one of the most complex environmental protection programs to come out of the late 1970's. The level of detail in the statute and the regulations have resulted in a rigid and complex set of requirements for the administration, permit-ting, inspection and enforcement of the program. In addition, the constant change of the federal program caused by regulatory changes, reorganization of the Office of Sur-face Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), ongoing litigation involving OSMRE, and the use of the budget to establish additional mandates on OSMRE and the State Regulatory Authorities have resulted in an unstable program. The instability of the program makes it extremely difficult for the States to implement their programs and to achieve the goals of SMCRA.

This paper presents the desulphurisation of a fine graphite powder below 80 µm by high gradient magnetic separation. The removal of pyrite (FeS2) and pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) from the fine graphite powder was carried out with a modified version of the Sala dry HGMS with vibration assistance. In addition, a comparative study with dry and wet HGMS systems has also been performed. In order to establish the performance of the desulphurisation, a test series of varying parameters such as magnetic induction, matrix type/configuration and vibration were performed. As an equipment/process for removing sulphurous impurities from the fine graphite powder, the dry HGMS is deemed useful and comparative with the wet HGMS.

Introduction The South African Witwatersrand is the world's largest gold-bearing province and gold producing district. But the production capacity of the very big mines (Vaal Reef, Driefontein Cons., Western Holdings, Western Deep Levels, and others) is not as large as that of the Soviet Union's Muruntau gold mine. The Muruntau gold-bearing ore body was discovered in 1956-57, and has been in operation since that time. In the early 1970s, this mine produced 70 to 80 t/a (2.3 to 2.6 million oz per year) of gold. Within the last few years it has become the world's largest producing gold mine. Russian authors do not publish ore reserve or rate of production data. But it is very likely that the Muruntau mining complex, which involves several ore bodies, is currently producing about 143 t/a (4.6 million oz per year) of gold. INTRODUCTION Zortman Mining Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pegasus Gold Corporation of Spokane, Washington. Pegasus has been producing gold and silver from the Zortman and Landusky mines since 1979. The Zortman and Landusky mines are two distinct open pit mines located approximately 6 kilometers apart in the Little Rockies Mining District of north central Montana. The two mines use large-tonnage, low- grade heap leaching techniques to efficiently process the gold and silver ore. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Little Rockies rise abruptly 914 metres from the surrounding plains to about 1829 metres above sea level. The topography is quite steep, making efficient leach pad construction a major challenge. The climate is semi-arid with moderate summers and occasionally severe winters. Freezing temperatures usually arrive in late October or early November, influencing the effectiveness of leaching operations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY The geology of the Little Rocky Mountains consists of steeply dipping sedimentary ridges forming an elliptical dome surrounding a core of intruding syenite porphyry. Within the syenite porphyry are well fractured and mineralized shear zones where the existing reserves and open pits are located. The ore is presently divided into oxidized, mixed, and sulfide. Only the oxides and mixed zones that are of ore grade are placed on the leach pads. The syenite porphyry host rock enables effective leaching of gold and silver to depths of 61 metres, having a major impact on leach pad construction costs. MINING All mining since 1979 has been by contractor. This enabled initial mining to commence without capital investment in equipment. Through competitive negotiations, Pegasus has been able to keep contract mining costs at levels very close to what would be experienced if Pegasus had purchased equipment initially. Contracts are negotiated yearly and are based on a unit price and haul distance for ore and waste. Haul distances have ranged from as little as 457 metres to as much as 3,050 metres. At present, Pegasus is developing a 27,000,000-tonne leach pad at the Landusky project that is adjacent to the minine area. This design feature will reduce the mining cost by 20 percent over the life of the mine. In 1987, over 5,900,000 tonnes of ore and 3,200,000 tonnes of waste will be mined at the Landusky project. Through 1986, 13,763,000 tonnes of ore have been mined at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.60:l at the Zortman project, and 13,005,000 tonnes of ore at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.79:l have been mined at the Landusky project. Current mining reserves are 32,769,000 tonnes of ore at a waste- to-ore strip ratio of 0.59:l. Through efficiencies of large-scale heap leaching, Pegasus has been able to lower the mining cutoff from 0.34 grams per tonne gold to 0.27 grams per tonne gold. This has reduced the mining cost per tonne of ore h percent through a reduction in strip ratio of 14 percent. Beginning in 1984, all pits were designed based on computer-generated "floating cone" pits. The geologic models were developed by Pegasus staff with a series of economic models evaluated. The resulting computer-generated pits were used as a guideline in designing the mine plans, including haul roads for final calculation of tons and grade. Input to the floating cone models consisted of mining cost, processing cost, cutoff grade (0.34 grams gold per tonne), recovery (67 percent) and gold price. Due to the gold being deposited primarily on the fractures of the syenite host rock, no crushing of ore is needed prior to leaching. This characteristic of the ore is a key in being able to profitably mine and process gold ore at an average grade of 0.69 grams of gold per tonne. Strict blasting control is also a key in success of the leaching operation. A system of splitting ore and waste in blast patterns has been devised to reduce dilution. Also, drill hole spacings are varied from 3m x 3m in breccia ore to 4m x 4m in syenite ore to 5m x 5m in waste. Drill holes

Introduction The Fortitude deposit is located in Nevada's Battle Mountain mining district in the central Great Basin region of the Basin and Range province of the western US. The deposit is at Copper Canyon in the southernmost portion of the district, about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain (Fig. 1). Mining activity in the district began in 1866 (Roberts and Arnold, 1965). Base and precious metals were mined by underground methods intermittently until 1955. Placer gold was first discovered at Copper Canyon in 1912. Moderate scale dredging of alluvial gravel at the mouth of Copper Canyon was conducted by the Natomas Co. from 1944 to 1955 (Johnson, 1973). In 1967, Duval Corp. began large scale open-pit copper mining. (Sayers, Tippett, and Fields, 1968). Copper prices decreased and precious metals prices increased in the mid-1970s so Duval's exploration efforts at Copper Canyon shifted to precious metals. These exploration efforts resulted in the discovery of the Tomboy-Minnie deposits and shortly afterward, the Northeast Extension deposit at Copper Canyon (Blake, Wotruba, and Theodore, 1984; Fig. 2). The Fortitude deposit was discovered in late 1980, after Duval had proceeded with precious metals production at Copper Canyon. Converting the existing plant facilities at Copper Canyon to a precious metals recovery system was completed in 1978 (Jackson, 1982). Production from the Tomboy-Minnie deposits began in early 1979. Precious metals production moved to the Northeast Extension deposit in 1982. In late 1984, after three years of preproduction stripping and mining of the Upper Fortitude ore zone, production from the higher grade Lower Fortitude ore zone began. Currently, Battle Mountain Gold Co. operates the Fortitude deposit. Production from the Battle Mountain mining district before 1967 included 4.6 t (150,000 oz) of gold, 65.3 t (2.1 million oz) of silver, 13.6 kt (15,000 st) of copper, 4.5 kt (5,000 st) of lead, and 13.6 kt (15,000 st) of zinc (Roberts and Arnold, 1965). At the time of Duval's 1967 start-up, ore reserves at Copper Canyon included 12.6 Mt (14 million st) in the East ore body and another 3.6 Mt (4 million st) in the West ore body. Both had average grades of 0.79% copper, 16.1 g/t (0.47 oz per st) silver and 0.86 g/t (0.025 oz per st) gold (Blake et al., 1984). The Tomboy-Minnie deposits collectively contained 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st) of ore grading 3.09 g/t (0.09 oz per st) gold and 9.6 g/t (0.28 oz per st) silver. The Northeast Extension reserves were identified as 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of ore with an average grade of 2.9 g/t (0.085 oz per st) gold and 5.1 g/t (0.15 oz per st) silver. Initial total reserve estimates for the Fortitude deposit were 14.5 Mt (16 million st) grading 5.14 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold and 29.8 g/t (0.87 oz per st) silver (Jackson, 1982). Therefore, before large scale mining, the Copper Canyon area contained a minimum of 102.6 t (3.3 million oz) of gold and 541 t (17.4 million oz) of silver as mineable reserves. The Fortitude deposit reserves as of Jan. 1, 1985 were 10.6 Mt (11 million st) grading at 5.28 g/t (0.154 oz per st) gold and 28.5 g/t (0.83 oz per st) silver. In 2024, Capstone Copper Corp commissioned a new sulfide flotation plant at Mantoverde in the Atacama region of Chile to process copper ore at a design rate of 32,000tpd. The pyrite associated with the copper ore body contains cobalt in solid solution, with Co replacing Fe in the pyrite matrix. As per the existing sulfide flotation flowsheet most of the pyrite is depressed and sent to tailings via the cleaner scavenger tail stream. A new project considers the recovery of the pyrite from the cleaner-scavenger tails via froth flotation to produce a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate, which is then leached via the existing dynamic copper leach pad to oxidize the pyrite and dissolve the cobalt. The cobalt is recovered from the solution by treating a bleed stream of copper SX raffinate through a continuous, counter-current ion exchange (CCIX) facility. This approach to by-production of cobalt confers numerous benefits, including reduced costs compared with alternative cobalt recovery processes, reduced acid consumption in the heap leach, increased copper production, and reduced acid mine drainage potential due to the removal of pyrite from the mill tailings.

In 1977, an article in World Mining (1) reported a total of 2726 rotary blast hole drills in service. This figure included only those machines produced by three of the manufacturers building drills of this type. The total, therefore, is much higher: Rotary drilling in the mining industry is big business to the manufacturers and suppliers involved, and a significant cost item, to mine operators. The time has come to take a hard look at rotary drilling technology with an eye to re¬ducing costs by increasing drilling efficiency. The efficiency of any rotary drilling operation is measured in terms of the rate of penetration achieved by the bit. In blast hole drilling, five factors affect the rate of penetration. They are: 1. Bit selection 2. Weight on the bit 3. Rotary speed 4. Hole cleaning 5. Formation properties Of these factors, all but one may be control¬led by the operator. Looking at any one in detail may reveal possible improvements in the system. Cleaning the hole is a good place to start. In order for a bit to perform at its maximum capability, each tooth or insert should strike fresh, clean rock as it falls into its drilling position. If the tooth or insert lands on previously drilled cuttings, a major portion of the energy delivered to the bit is absorbed in re drilling this broken material. A major portion of the interest, therefore, should be directed to the proper cleaning of the bottom of the hole.
