The authors have been interested in stress measurements in the rock mass for a long time. This paper describes the development of new apparatus for stress measurements in a rock mass. The principle of stress measurement by this device is based on the relief method as applied on the conical shaped surface of the bottom of a borehole. The design started based on the experience of K. Sugawara and Y. Obara who have been using the compact conical borehole over-coring system (CCBO). The conical shape of the strain gauge probe CCBO makes the fixation of the probe in borehole easy and, also, makes the measurement of stress in independent directions possible. The principle of the measuring method, the preparation of the borehole, the design of the probe for continuous measurement of stress during the course of overcoring are described. Also, a simplified version of the probe for long term monitoring of stress variations in the rock mass by means of the inserted body method and the initial laboratory results and in-situ testing of the development sample are described. Additionally, testing was done regarding the possible glues in relationship to the creep effect for this case.

Conveyor belt haulage has become the preferred mainline transport method in underground coal mining, especially for multi-unit mines. Proper designs for belts (width and speed) and surge bins (placement, capacity, and discharge rate) are necessary to achieve efficient mine haul- age. Two computer simulation models, CMBCS and BELTSIM, available for designing these parameters were compared. These comparisons included modeling, input data requirements, statistical flexibility, accuracy of simulated loading, and execution time.

The sixth survey on the mining industry by Comann Associates provided data for entry-level and midlevel engineers as well as executive officers. Average 1989 compensation - base salary and anticipated bonus - for chief mining executive officers or chief mining operating officers: $237,943. This is an increase of 20% over the results of the last survey, on 1985 compensation. The latest survey also showed that bonuses for chief mining executive officers averaged 33% of base salary. Average 1989 compensation for chief executive or chief operating officers at mining operations with under $50 million in gross sales, $148,638; at mining operation with more than $50 million in gross sales, $275,141. The survey showed that these officers averaged 14 years employment with their present company, had five years in their present position, and had an average age of 54.

The primary method of slope stabilization is ground water-control. Recent research has established the properties which slope materials must exhibit in order for stabilization measures to be feasible, but there is little guidance in the literature about suitable field tests to develop the parameters needed for this evaluation. This paper presents a proven method for large scale testing which allows an evaluation of the feasibility of ground water pressure control in a reasonable cost and time frame. Methods of performance and analysis of the test are presented, and the method is illustrated by reference to case examples.

There will be about 300 raise boring machines used worldwide by late 1981, attesting to the acceptance of this drilling system by the mining and construction industries. Over the past few years, many articles have cited the advantages of raise boring: •improved safety; •faster completion of the raise; •elimination of sublevels; •cost reductions; •better structural characteristics of the opening; •labor reduction; and •noise abatement. The relative importance of each advantage varies from mine to mine. When analyzing the total economics of raising, each advantage must be considered. The factors having the most effect on economics are fixed costs, direct costs, and comparative savings versus conventional methods.

Electronic detonator systems are an advance in technology beyond conventional electric detonators for initiating explosives and blasting agents. Their use is widening into the mining operations of the U.S.A. Each electronic detonator system differs in design, construction, operation, and testing features and each system is different than “conventional” electric detonators. There are benefits of electronic detonator systems which serve to improve blasting safety. With the introduction of electronic detonator systems for mine blasting, issues were raised about the application of MSHA regulations for shunting and circuit testing. The MSHA regulations for surface and underground mine blasting operations address the use of “electric” detonators. Although electronic detonators are initiated by an electric pulse or current, their design is unlike “electric” detonators. To resolve the issues of shunting and circuit testing with respect to MSHA regulations, a technical and field evaluation of electronic detonators was made and the results are presented.

A kinetic model for the batch leaching of various metals using different lixiviants was developed. The overall material balances for the reactants and products at the solid/ liquid interface were formulated for various types of heterogeneous reactions at the interface. The solutions to these mass balances are identified analytically, as well as numerically. Applications of these numerical solutions to various leaching systems using rotating discs or powders are discussed. The metal-dissolution systems addressed include cobalt, nickel and copper in acid, cyanide and ammoniacal solutions.

The Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System (LoSCoMS) is designed to monitor shield pressures in real-time from longwall faces and to provide on-line information related to underground strata behavior and longwall mining operation. The information includes shield pressure data with statistical analysis of setting, developing and final pressures, prediction of shield pressures for the following shift or day, etc. and maintenance data on the shields. The LoSCoMS has been installed and tested at Shoal Creek Mine operated by Drummond Company, Inc. The system is providing valuable information to mine operators for better understanding of underground behaviors. As a result, it has become an effective tool for minimizing ground control hazards and reducing out of seam material.

Froth flotation is now, the most commonly used method for cleaning fine-coal fractions in coal-preparation plants. Past research and industrial practice have demonstrated that froth flotation achieves excellent separation efficiencies for fine coals having only a small fraction of middling particles. However, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply as the concentration of middling particles increases. This is due to the flotation of high-ash particles that have a small amount of hydrophobic coal present at the surface. Because gravity-based processes are much more efficient for the treatment of middlings, the application of centrifugal washing for fine-coal cleaning was studied with an emphasis on the primary cleaning of fine-circuit feed. Results are shown of a parametric study that used a semibatch Falcon centrifugal concentrator. The results of the study revealed that separation performance is a function of particle size, bowl geometry, feed solids content and feed rate.

Cyanidation processes for the extraction of gold or silver frequently involve the processing of sulfurcontaining solids that react with cyanide to form thiocyanate. The formation of thiocyanate is an undesired side reaction, and in many cases thiocyanate formation results in a prohibitively high cyanide consumption. With the increasing number of gold and silver mining projects that involve the processing of sulfide ores or concentrates or that utilize a biological sulfur oxidation process, more attention is being focused on minimizing thiocyanate formation and in treating solutions to eliminate toxicity associated with thiocyanate. Though not yet commercially applied, there are several processes available to recover cyanide from thiocyanate to reduce tailings toxicity and to allow the reuse of cyanide otherwise lost to thiocyanate formation. This paper presents an overview of processes available for recovering cyanide from thiocyanate along with estimated operating costs for the processes. Pilot testing data suggests that in some cases cyanide can be recovered from thiocyanate for approximately the same cost as newly purchased cyanide.

Jamaica has extensive deposits of marble, gypsum, and limestone, offering prospects for commercial sales to nearby US markets, notably the Gulf Coast and Southeast. Stare-owned and private Jamaican industrial minerals producers have made limited sales to date but expect to increase exports during the balance of the 1980s. Restraints include Jamaican government controls on access to essential foreign exchange for new capital investments and distribution of profits. Jamaican efforts to identify market opportunities in the US are reviewed, and the outlook for further exports of carbonates is discussed.

The Muck Valley Hydroelectric Project in Northeastern California required construction of a 3.65 meter tunnel through 6,623 meters of mixed volcanic flow deposits within a critical time frame. As Engineer and Construction Manager for the Project, Morrison-Knudsen Engineers invited bids for both Drill and Blast as well as Tunnel Boring Machine methods, selecting a contractor proposing a TBM designed and built specifically for this project which could excavate a wide variety of materials and maintain acceptable progress rates to complete the work within schedule. Tunnel lining as required included shotcrete with metal fibers and full circle concrete.

SYNOPSIS A Wirth tunnel borer owned by Anglo American Corporation completed a 1150m long tunnel some years ago and was subsequently extensively modified by Technical Development Services. In 1982 this borer provided new and particularly interesting information In the field of hard rock boring. The abrasive quartzltes traversed proved to be a challenge to the cutter manufacturer and the project team. This paper examines the problems faced, the solutions found and the lessons learnt.

The use of rock simulators in rock mechanics research greatly expands the scope of the problems that can be investigated with physical models. However, the exact reproduction of full scale conditions, or absolute simulitude, is not obtainable on a small scale model. For this to be possible, the scales of length, time, and pressure (or mass) must be changed without altering the theoretical equations that describe the behavior of materials concerned. In using rock simulants for physical modeling of structures designed in rock, the geometry of full scale structure is reduced to a size suitable for the available testing machine. This will require the strength related properties to be scaled down. Simulation should be representative of the in situ conditions. Complete simulation will require that friction parameters and the stress ratios be matched exactly between prototype and model. The procedure involved in application of physical modeling for rock mechanics research is discussed in the following pages. Background, theoretical approach, and anticipated benefits to the research community are also elaborated.

The EUROPEAN ORGANIZATION for NUCLEAR RESEARCH (CERN) has undertaken the construction of a LARGE ELECTRON POSITRON COLLIDER (LEP), near GENEVA (Switzerland). The facility includes the main 27 km long tunnelled ring, 18 shafts, 20 experimental caverns and many auxiliary galleries. Roughly 800 000 cu.m were excavated in the molasse at 50-140 m depths, using roadheaders for caverns and auxiliary tunnels and 3 WIRTH, 4.5 m diameter, fullface TBMs for the main circular tunnel. Each TBM performs 25-30 m/day. Provisory lining behind them uses either precast concrete elements or shotcrete. INTRODUCTION This paper presents a method of calculation of internal moments and thrusts in tunnel liners of any material. The method is intended for hand calculation, but as it is numerical in nature it can be programmed for use in computers. The information required for design or analysis is presumed active internal and external pressures, the effective moment of inertia and cross-sectional area of the tunnel liner, the liner's modulus of elasticity, and the coefficient of subgrade reaction of the material surrounding the tunnel. Starting with active external and internal pressures and following the procedure described herein using the structural properties of the liner and surrounding medium, external passive reactions and internal moments and thrusts are calculated. The method is intended for use by design engineers. GENERAL Experience has shown that flexible tunnel liners have less internal bending stresses than those calculated using classical structural theory applied to free-standing arches. In fact, liners which are very flexible in relation to the surrounding soil or rock have virtually no bending moments when compared to free-standing arches supporting equal active loads. In order for this phenomenon to occur, the original active pressure diagram must be "modified" by additional external reactions (passive pressures) from the surrounding material, so that the thrust line within the lining follows the centroid of the tunnel arch more closely than that of a similar free-standing arch. INTRODUCTION Controlled blasting is used at some time during most civil engineering projects where there is rock excavation. Controlled blasting is often necessary because the blasting must take place in the near proximity of adjacent structures. In other instances, the blasting is controlled because a smooth perimeter is desired to minimize rock support and overbreak. The construction of tunnels and shafts for subways, rock excavations for foundations and the excavation of road cuts for interstate highways, sometimes require blasting operations which must be conducted in an urban environment. Unfortunately, blasting operations produce unwanted sounds and vibration along with their beneficial effects. Thus, in the writing of specifications for blasting in an urban environment, potential damage to adjacent structures by ground vibrations must be considered, possible damage to windows from airblasts must be considered, potential damage from fly rock must be considered, and the discomfort to people from ground vibrations, airblast, and noise must be taken into account. The contractor or the owner's engineer is faced with determining the maximum weight of explosives which may be detonated without damage to structures on adjacent property. If the weight of explosive is overestimated, the resulting damage to adjacent structures may result in costly losses. But, if the engineer or contractor is too conservative, and the weight of explosive becomes too restrictive, progress of the project may be curtailed and the cost of excavation will increase accordingly. Virtual reality (VR) is a concept in which the human experience of perceiving and interacting with a computer-modeled environment is achieved through the use of sensors and effectors. It is an advanced form of computer graphics. The images are generated based on where the user looks and how the user moves. As personal-computer-based (PC) instruction gains acceptance as an innovative approach to providing safety training, VR can provide a multisensory, rather than merely a multimedia, mode of presentation. New technology continues to be introduced into the mining industry to meet the productivity needs of coal and noncoal producers. There is also an increased need for more innovative training of mine workers. New technology and equipment designs often affect the basic causes of accidents. For example, the development of cabs and canopies for underground coal-mine equipment has reduced the number of accidents related to roof falls and rib rolls. However, safety-training specialists then had to focus on the machines themselves, because the modifications had the potential for causing "pinch-point" accidents. In fact, although the overall physical demands on mine workers have diminished, there has been an escalation in the concerns about trauma from repetitive physical activity. Thus, health-and-safety training specialists have shifted their atten¬tion to the recognition, evaluation and control of workplace hazards (Hancock and Hill, 1995). Recognizing that the spatial relationships of a workplace convey more information about hazards when experienced rather than described, trainers agree that simulation is the method of choice. Unfortunately, until recently, simulation systems were either simple software programs that did not come close to portraying the real experience or were complex hardware systems (such as flight simulators) that did, but at a cost of millions of dollars (Fritz, 1991). However, researchers and training specialists are excited about an emerging approach to work-force education based on virtual reality. VR is also described as cyberspace, immersive simulation, artificial reality, telepresence, virtual environment or virtual world (Meyer and Dunn-Roberts, 1992; Peterson, 1992). It represents a group of concurrent advances in computer and interface technologies. They enable an individual to interact in a multisensory way with a computer-generated environment. To achieve this, a typical VR system incorporates a computer that contains the necessary databases for producing realistic images and audio; a head-mounted display (HMD) or screen for viewing the images; and a three-dimensional controller, joystick or data glove for interacting with the computer-generated environment. If virtual reality is to become an effective tool for the safety training of mine workers, its attributes will have to be measured against other forms of delivery. Accordingly, Carr (1992) listed the following areas in which VR should be considered the method of choice: ? When training mistakes would be costly. ? When the necessary environment cannot be experienced in the real world. ? To build interfaces that are sensible and can be manipulated. ? To make training situations really "real." ?To make perceptible the imperceptible.

The application of conveyor belting in bulk materials handling is crucial to the success of most mining enterprise selection of the cover rubber grade and thickness has a direct bearing on the cost per ton conveyed. Current and future demands placed on belt covers by higher speeds, increase capacities and greater lifts means today's cover will not be adequate for tomorrow's applications. The simple selections of RMA Grade I and I1 and MSHA above and below ground need to be expanded upon. This paper describes various new approaches for selecting conveyor belt covers for specific applications. It also presents examples of material and compounding techniques available to the belt manufacturer to improve the performance of their covers.

Environmental management and planning requires the integration of large volumes of disparate information from many sources and the analysis of this information with efficient tools for assessment and evaluation. Effective methods of communication that allow interactive participation in the planning, assessment and decision-making processes are also very important. The VULCAN software package from Maptek (Pty) Ltd comprises a large number of 3D graphical tools within an interactive 3D interface called ENVISAGE. These tools are designed and developed to help engineers and scientists to identify and solve environmental problems. The combination of VULCAN 3D Software and the I-SiTE 3D Laser Imaging system leads to powerful solutions for environmental management. This paper presents the capabilities of this integrated system and its applications for environmental management.
