When considering all the aspects of a viable mine plan, it is important to estimate the accurate cost of mine ventilation, which varies as a function of airway dimensions, fan selection and ventilation network. Optimization of the overall elements of ventilation design can lead to very significant cost savings when capital and operating cost savings are considered in combination. This paper will describe a methodology, whereby ventilation costs can be minimized by optimizing the ventilation aspects of mine design and fan selection, by providing a brief description on ventilation theory and the factors which affect ventilation operating and capital costs.

Flotation pulps with boron minerals such as colemanite and borax using primary amine collectors, e.g. dodecylamine, exhibit collector precipitation above a critical pH depending on the amine concentration. This was earlier attributed to the formation of a mine hydroborate. However, results from this current study indicate that the precipitate is dode-cylamine, rather than dodecylamine hydroborate. A systematic study involving solubility, zeta potential, microflotation, adsorption, and surface tension measurements is presented to elucidate the role of a mine precipitates in boron flotation systems.

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority (MIA) Red Line has served greater Boston commuter needs from its Harvard Square terminus since its opening in 1912. Since then, the population of Boston's northwest area has increased substantially, and with this growth have come dramatic changes in the type and distribution of urban land uses, including the number of households, jobs, shopping and recreational opportunities; these changes have created a need for improved transportation. Extension of the Red Line to better serve these communities has been a topic of discussion for nearly 40 years. In November of 1977, the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) granted the MBTA approval and funding for the Red Line Extension Project. With funding in place, the MBTA proceeded with final engineering and construction of the section from Harvard Square to Alewife. When completed, the Red Line Extension will add 3.2 miles of new track to the MBTA system. Estimated final cost is about $400 million. On October 3, 1978, the MBTA received bids for the construction of Project 091-105, Harvard Square to Porter Square Tunnels and Shafts, which is part of the overall Red Line Extension. The Joint Venture of Morrison-Knudsen, White, Mergentime was the low bidder at $47,478,600. Official award of the contract came on October 25, 1978, with Notice to Proceed given October 31, 1978. As part of a larger study to identify factors influencing the practical operating life of wire rope used on large draglines in surface coal mining, field trips to operating surface coal mines were made during late 1975. Wire rope performance information was obtained from personnel at thirteen mine sites west of the Appalachians. Seventeen pieces of equipment, utilizing buckets ranging from 30-to 220-cubic-yard capacity, were documented. We have judged that U.S. surface coal mining draglines, 30 yards and larger, can be represented as 120 machines having 60-cubic-yard buckets, moving 1.8 x 10 yards of overburden during 6,650 hours of productive availability per year. Based on our limited field study, we have calculated that downtime resulting from rope-related causes averages 105.6 hours per year for each (typical 60-yard) dragline. The total lost production from this source alone is thereby estimated at about 25 x 10 yards annually. Although study findings did not reveal anything about dragline rope life that wasn't known or practiced by one operator or another, most operators could expect improved rope life by periodic review of their practices and by adopting or adapting one or more life-improvement measures employed at other sites. Since rope productivity was found to vary by about five to one, among the sites studied, we believe considerably improved average performance is possible. As little as ten percent overall improvement would mean increased national productivity exceeding two million yards of solid overburden removal, and associated savings in rope costs alone of some two million dollars annually, not to mention any reduction of labor-related expenses. This report outlines preliminary findings which may prove useful to many operators in extending wire rope life, thereby lowering expenses and increasing surface coal mining productivity. Steel consumption ranks as one of the major consumables along with energy in most operations with total annual industry expenditures in excess of $275 million. It is generally agreed that there are 3 main categories of wear responsible for this metal loss. These three main types can be loosely defined as follows; 1) Abrasion. The cutting, rubbing, scrapping and gouging of the metal surface by the ore with which it is in contact; 2) Impact. Stage open stope mining (SOSM) maintains the stability of excavation openings by leaving a large number of rib pillars. Affected by the strong unloading due to stage mining and the low width-to-height (w/h) ratio of the pillars remaining, large-scale destabilization disasters of rib pillars or excavation openings easily occur when the distribution of ground stress or the size of rib pillars is unreasonable. In view of these problems, a physical SOSM model test was carried out based on an underground metal mine in the city of Chifeng in China, revealing the deformation and failure characteristics of the SOSM pillar group by overloading.

This paper presents a succinct overview of the Canadian coal situation. The topics treated specifically are: the rates of growth of coal supply and demand; the relationship between the coal and electricity generation industries which form its dominant market; the unique impact of nuclear generation on coal demand in Canada; and finally, a view of the developing technologies which will create opportunities for growth in the coal industry of the future. Resources The most important element of coal supply is the resource. The disposition of Canada's coal resources has a marked effect on their utilization, since industry in Canada has not generally developed around coal-fields. The distance from the major industrial centres of Ontario and Quebec to the major region of coal supply in Alberta and British Columbia has crested an economic barrier to the expansion of the use of domestic coal.

SUMMARY Commitment by all parties to partnering goals established early in the contract aided Affholder, Inc. in constructing 2,360m (7,700') of soft ground tunnel in Rancho Cordova, CA. Despite two zones of known contamination, encountering a zone of loose cobbles and boulders in a matrix of flowing sand, some perched water tables and a flooded tunnel after 2 upstream safety plugs failed, the Contractor finished the work 33 days early and only 1.91% over his original bid.

Underground room-and-pillar mining operations in the Warrior Coal Field in Alabama frequently suffer instability due to soft floor and thinly-laminated immediate roof. The investigation covered by this paper concerns a mine that was experiencing ground-control problems with weak floor conditions. Four hundred ft above the presently producing seam, another seam has been mined out. Several roof falls occurred locally, and as much as two ft of floor heaves have been experienced. The paper presents the results of comprehensive analysis conducted on floor heave, roof sagging, and the influence of the mined-out seam using instrumentation and numerical analysis.

This paper addresses the challenges of designing the underpinning of major sub-way station with 4 operating tracks. No. 7 subway extension crosses under the existing 42nd street subway station on the 8th Avenue line. Understanding the history of the original construction, of the current structures and their condition were instrumental in developing a feasible underpinning design that is integrated with the design of the new tunnels. The existing 8th Avenue subway station has a lower abandoned level. Several alignments and corresponding underpinning schemes were studied. The design allows new tunnel construction under the station without interruption of station operations.

In relating geology and mineral resources to the nongeologist engaged in planning and zoning, a major hurdle to overcome is often the concept of natural resources. Statements listing such "resources" generally include and often may he limited to such items as "open space", "buildings of historical value", "forest and wilderness areas", and "sites of natural beauty" but seldom mention minerals even where they are of significant economic importance to the area. Unfortunately, mention of mineral resources is often limited to statements calling for tight controls on mining to prevent "ravaging of the land". While, the concept of sequential use involving mining is sometimes acknowledged, it is frequently done in such a manner that this approach is discouraged. In the conflict for land between urban development, recreational open space and mineral extraction, far too often the mineral industry will be the loser. In Missouri, there have long been continuing requests for geologic and resource data for planning purposes from city and county government and from Federal agencies for inclusion in the various river basin studies and Soil Conservation Service projects. These reports vary in detail from concise statements of the geology of an area to rather lengthy reports on mineral and water resources, bed rock and engineering geology characteristics. In most cases, these reports as written were directed to a geologically-oriented reader. Our initial approach to presenting geologic data to the land-use planner was in the area of engineering geology with attempts to show the limitations that bedrock and soil conditions can place on development. The application of aluminum matrix composites, due to their unique properties, is significantly growing in the variety of industries such as aerospace and automobile. In comparison to other light metals, such as magnesium and titanium, aluminum is lower in price. These are the advantages that this metal dominates the others. In this research, first by applying the lost foam casting method, the SiCp/A356 composite was cast in the bottom and side gate conditions with 690°C and volume fraction of 10%. Furthermore, the effects of reinforcement particles (60 µm, 75 µm) were examined. The results present the particles distribution in the side gate methods is more homogeneous than the bottom gate casting method. Also, by increasing the particles sizes, the fading rate in the side gate are reduced from 22% to 19%, as well as from 26.4% to 25.4% in the bottom gate. Multiple seam mining is predominant throughout the central Pennsylvania Appalachian coal fields. Wide ranges in individual seam thickness, coal quality, and overburden characteristics are common throughout the region. On typical mining permits, ranging from 404 x 103 to 2023 x 103 m2 (100 to 500 acres), often as many as eight seams are concurrently mined, with each interburden requiring unique economic and environmental consideration in the mine plan. Specifically, this paper presents several planning tools and operational guidelines developed in response to current regulations for the special handling of potentially acid-forming materials as they are related to development and operation of multiple seam mines.

Commercial development of the mineral resources of southwestern Missouri began about 1850 and spread into southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, forming the Tri-State Mining District with Joplin as the urban center (fig. 1). The value of the Tri-State mineral production from 1850 to 1950 exceeded one billion dollars, and until 1945 the region was the world's leading producer of lead and zinc concentrates, accounting for one-half of the zinc and one-tenth of the lead produced in the United States (Gibson, 1972 1). By 1950 most of the rich ores had been extracted, and mining and milling operations declined during the 1950's and ceased in the 1960's. The sulfide minerals, mainly galena and sphalorite, were mined from cherty limestones at depths of 25 to 75 m (meters). Crude ores were brought from the mines to the surface where they were milled into lead and zinc concentrates. , Barren rock was discarded in piles while the ore-bearing rock was crushed and ground into fine gravel. The minerals were separated from the rock by a jigging process and the tailings were skimmed off and discarded in large piles. Ground-water flooding of the mines was controlled by constant pumping. When pumpage declined in the 1950's and 1960's tile abandoned mine drifts and shafts filled with water. At present (1977) numerous tailings piles and flooded mines remain as visible evidence of the mining era and as a threat to the quality of ground and surface waters of the area. In 1976 the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Ozark Gateway Council of Governments made a study of the effects of the mines and tailings piles on water quality in the Missouri part of the Tri-State District. The study area covers approximately the southwestern quarter of Jasper County, an area of about 725 km2 (square kilometers), and is bounded by long 94 o 15' w.' and the Missouri-Kansas state line, and lat 37 o 15 N., and the Jasper-Newton County line.

This paper describes the surgical removal of a 24 ft dia. Slurry Shield TBM entombed beneath one of the country’s busiest commuter rail interlockings, the Harold Interlocking in Queens, NY, and the construction of the interface to a cut/cover tunnel which extended the mined tunnel section. A sophisticated SOE was built around the TBM to support active track loads within 8ft. of the excavation. Once the TBM head and guts were removed, a full round CIP lining was installed connecting the existing precast tunnel liner to the C/C tunnel under construction. All this construction was done on a narrow island of land without road access nestled between 7 mainline LIRR/Amtrak rail lines.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to improve mine planning and development, is currently investigating the effects of pillar load transfer, which can impact mining operations within a multiple-seam configuration. A comparative study was performed at two separate mine sites to determine the effects of this load transfer mechanism. The Bureau installed and monitored instrumentation at both sites to gather pertinent data on rock mechanics. At mine site A overburden depth varied dramatically in the vicinity of the study area and reached a topographic high at the study site: inner burden thickness was less than a pillar width (40 to 45 ft) (12 to 14 m): floor heaving was experienced in both coalbeds where sandstone and/or shale floor units were observed: overlays of the mine layouts show pillars were not totally super-positioned: a maximum of 5 in (13 cm) of roof to floor convergence was measured and pressure readings indicated pillar core loading only and increased to a maximum of 7,000 psig (48,300 kPa) over instrument setting pressure.

With the rapidly growing use of hydraulics in mining equipment, maintenance personnel should be familiar with the various components in hydraulic systems. Hydraulic systems do wear out - the fluids they transport are hot and turbulent, the equipment they power often imposes tremendous pressure pulsations and bending stresses, and the working environment is harsh. Therefore, even though hydraulic hoses are made of remarkably trouble-free components, they do need to be replaced periodically. There must be coupling methods that allow hoses to be replaced without disturbing other components. Couplings must also provide a variety of leak-resistant connections between hoses and other components in the hydraulic circuitry. Threaded Connection and Seals Hydraulic coupling thread ends and sealing arrangements are standardized, with many types available. Their outward appearance varies, but coupling configurations are recognizable by examining threads and seals and comparing them to the examples provided here. Iron Pipe Thread There are two kinds of iron pipe threads normally used in mining equipment circuitry - National Pipe Tapered Thread for Fuels (NPTF) and National Pipe Straight Thread Mechanical Joint (NPSM). The NPTF seal is the engagement of the coupling threads, called thread interference. When tightened, the tapered thread of the male fitting binds into that tapered thread of the female fitting to form a relatively leakproof seal (Fig. 1). In the NPSM seal, there is a 30° angle seat machined into the end of the male NPTF fitting. This seat engages with a mating 30° angle cone on the inside of the female fitting. Female NPSM fittings have straight threads, as opposed to the tapered threads of the NPTF fittings. However, most NPTF solid male fittings also have a 30° angle seat enabling them to be used with NPSM female fittings (Fig. 2). JIC and SAE Fittings Joint Industry Conference (JIC) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) seals are formed by joining two mating, conical metal surfaces. The coupling threads are used to bring and hold these surfaces together to form a leak-resistant seal. A JIC connection is a solid male threaded end, with a 37° machined male nose, mating with a 37° female flare seat. When connected, the mating surfaces are held together by the threads, but the threads do not form the seal. The female seat is created by flaring a tube end or machining the interior surface of a stem to 37°. A female JIC has a swivel nut, allowing the sealing surfaces to be joined together without twisting a hose or twisting the seats against each other (Fig. 3). JIC couplings are frequently used on low, medium, or high pressure hydraulic circuits on mining equipment and machinery. The SAE connection is similar in appearance and sealing characteristics to the JIC system, except the angle of the machined male nose and female flare seat is 45° (Fig. 4). "O" Ring Fittings Seals for "O" ring fittings are formed by compressing an "O" ring against an exposed machined surface on a mounting block or hydraulic component part. "Underground mine diesel equipment generally offers more flexibility as compared to electric powered systems. Diesel exhaust is an adverse agent which affects the health of underground miners. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) regard diesel exhaust as carcinogenic. The NIOSH 5040 method is an established technique for measuring Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM). This process inherently involve a lag time before an accurate exposure determination can be made during which miners are potentially overexposed to DPM. This issue can be addressed by using realtime DPM monitors. This paper presents underground mine shift average based and realtime monitored DPM values monitored in US mines. A FLIR Airtec instrument has been used for realtime measurement whereas shift average based DPM has been determined by the use of NIOSH 5040 method. A log of diesel equipment movement was kept. DPM concentrations versus time were plotted and analyzed. High DPM sources were identified and the FLIR Airtec was demonstrated to be satisfactory for realtime DPM measurements. INTRODUCTION The use of diesel equipment in mines is an attractive option due to its ability to convert a large fraction of available energy into useable work. Diesel engines are rugged, dependable and fuel efficient. It is very common for diesel engines in heavy duty trucks to have a life of 1,600,000 km [Anon, 1999]. Generally in underground mines compared to electric powered equipment, diesel equipment provides more maneuverability. It can be assumed that the underground mining industry will maintain its reliance on diesel powered equipment keeping in mind the recent developments in other energy alternatives [Anon, 2001a]. A harmful aspect to the use of diesel as a fuel is its resultant emission as an adverse environmental exposure agent. Generally diesel particles are approximately one order of magnitude smaller than respirable dust aerosols in underground mines (typically less than one micron in size) [Kittelson, 1998]. Force of gravity has less effect on DPM due to its small particle size. The phenomenon of less gravitational attraction increases the settling and residence time of DPM in the mine atmosphere. High residence time of DPM as compared to other mechanically generated particles increases the chances of diesel particles deposition in the human respiratory tract. The small sized diesel aerosols penetrate deeply into regions of the human lung [Morawska. et al. 2005], which increase the health risks associated with long term exposure to diesel aerosols. Published studies documented the adverse health effects of DPM exposure [Walsh M.P., 1999]. Continuous and long term DPM exposure can result in respiratory disease, lung cancer, reduced lung capacity, and heart disease. NIOSH has declared that the reductions in DPM exposure would reduce cancer risks. In underground mines DPM determination is a challenging task and it is becoming a matter of serious concern due to the harmful health effects associated with the exposure of DPM. The current study involves the determination of realtime and shift averaged based DPM in underground mines of United States of America (USA). Realtime DPM was measured using FLIR Airtec monitors and shift averaged based measurement was performed by the MSHA approved NIOSH 5040 method. FLIR Airtec uses laser scattering approach to measures the Elemental Carbon (EC) component of the DPM. The results from the FLIR Airtec were compared with the results of NIOSH 5040 method and its performance was found satisfactory."
