Olivine has been an accepted industrial mineral for the last 50 years. Its initial acceptance was based on the recognition of its refractory properties by European research workers in the middle to late 1920's. Initial U.S. olivine production began in the early 1930's in North Carolina and continues there today. Olivine also is produced in the State of Washington and in other countries.

A study was conducted to remove iron from sulfate solu¬tions using Eichrom'sDipex®extractant, PP'-di(2-ethylhexyl) methanediphosphonic acid (H2DEH[MDP]). It was found that this extractant can effectively and selectively extract ferric ion from highly acidic solutions. Ninety-nine percent of the iron was extracted from a simulated feed solution in a single stage. The separation factor, Fe/Zn, was 106. More than 90% of the iron in a loaded organic can be recovered in an aqueous solution by reductive stripping. This paper presents the experimental results. A new process for iron removal using Dipex extractant is described and discussed.

The Troy deposit is located in northwestern Montana, approximately 17 mi south of Troy. The deposit is a stratiform, strata- bound, copper-silver deposit which occurs in the Revett formation of the Proterozoic Belt Supergroup. The Revett formation is approximately 1730 ft thick in the vicinity of the Troy deposit, and is divisible into three units. The upper Revett, approximately 250 ft thick, is the host for the orebody. The Revett represents a deltaic environment. The Troy deposit was discovered by Bear Creek Mining Company in 1 963 during the course of a reconnaissance stream sediment sampling program that was designed to discover strata-bound copper deposits. The deposit is approximately 7500 ft long, 1800 ft wide, and averages 60 ft thick. It is bounded on the north by outcrop, on the east by a post-mineral fault, on the south by diminishing grade and post-mineral faults, and on the west by diminishing grade. Ore reserves are 64 million tons with a grade of 0.76% Cu and 1.58 oz Ag per ton. The mine is presently operating at a production rate of 4.2 million oz of silver and 20,000 tons of copper per year.

The Tenmile Range is a north trending zone of high relief within the central Colorado porphyry-mineral belt, located between Leadville and Breckenridge. (Figure 1, the Index Map of the area surveyed.) The Climax mineralized zone is located at the southern end of the range on the northwest side of the Continental Divide. This portion of the total area surveyed will be discussed in detail today. A fixed wing aeromagnetic survey was flown over this range and mineralized zone in the fall of 1957. The survey was run as an experiment to see if a useful geophysical tool could be applied in the exploration for similar type deposits. The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of this survey and the approaches used to aid in the interpretation of the total intensity data.

Silver contained in zinc calcines undergoes several phase changes as it proceeds through the leaching circuit of a roast-leach-electrowin zinc plant. In the present study, the flotation response of silver from leach residues prepared under a variety of carefully controlled operating conditions in the pilot plant has been examined. Flotation of neutral leach residue is shown to be technically viable and to merit consideration for those plants without a high acid leach circuit, but having significant silver values in the feed. Residue leach conditions must be kept slightly acidic to promote the formation of Ag2S, (Ag, CU)2S and Ag2S rims on residual unroasted sphalerite, while simultaneously avoiding the hydrolysis of soluble iron which depresses silver recovery and grade. Factors to be considered during integration of a flotation process into an electrolytic zinc plant are discussed.

Little did I know, in 1977, that when the A. P. Green Refractories Raw Material Manager showed me 5-6 burlap bags with samples of calcined high alumina bauxite in their testing lab that this was the start of China moving to be the number one user and producer of calcined refractory bauxite. According to Ted Dickson in his August 2008 Industrial Minerals article China produced about 4 million tons of calcined bauxite in 2007 using 2 million tons themselves. They imposed an export limitation of 970,000 tons in 2007 and 940,000 tons in 2008. A 10% growth will take up the difference between exports and production in 4 years. Two of these years are gone. It will take only 4 more years to eliminate the export quota in home use. Then they will be importing unless they increase production. Guyana was exporting over a half million tons in 1975 and sold less than 70,000 tons in 2002. Basai Metals Group bought Guyana?s deposits and is rose to 250,000 tons in 2007 and expects to produce 280,000 tons in 2008. PRICES According to the USGS Prices dropped from $172/per ton for Guyana calcines in 1980 just after the start of Chinese production to $122 in 1985. Guyana prices averaged around $120/ton from 1985 to 2005. China?s price dropped as low as $45/ton in 1995 undercutting Guyana and making it virtually impossible for anyone to get into the market. The price suddenly escalated to $550/ton FOB China in the summer of 2008 when China actually cut its exports in half. The price dropped in the fall as orders dropped. This is a four to five fold price increase. Is this a shortage of bauxite or a monopoly? Australia dropped out of the market in 2008 and Surinam, controlled by Alcoa, is not participating right now. Will these two come back in to make up the difference? Will the price hold up so they can make a profit? [ ] The low prices have undoubtedly affected the prices of the 60 and 79% alumina bauxite which can hold down the quantity of 80% plus calcined refractory needed in the world market. China is starting to upgrade lower quality bauxite up to 90% alumina. With high prices kaolin alteration to high alumina comes into play. The calcined bauxite is also used for proponents, Brown fused alumina, and abrasive grades which compete with Refractories. These and the tightness of supplies needed for metallurgical will hold prices up. TONNAGE China is the number one supplier and consumer of high alumina calcined bauxite in the world. Basai Metals Group Guyana (BMGG) is owned and controlled by Basai Minerals Group of China. This appears to be the second largest supplier. Australia has dropped production and Brazil is just starting to expand. It appears China is going to replace some of exports caused by the Export License 940,000 ton maximum in 2008 by raising Guyana?s (BMGG) production of calcined refractory grade bauxite. Companies exceeded restriction in 2007. Fines have been imposed for 2008. In August 2008 they appear on line to meet the 2008 quota. After August prices have dropped off as orders dropped due to the recession. Guyana was the largest producer in 1975 with 769,000 tons which decreased to less than 79,000 tons in 2002. The U. S. is a small part of the world production. I have used the United States charts to represent world imports because I have little data on what other countries import and pay FOB for their bauxite. China started exporting calcined 80% plus refractory bauxite to the United States in 1979 with 24,000 tons. By 1985 they were the number one importer with 169,000 tons. Guyana who had been number one in shipments to the United States gradually decreased to 36,000 tons in 2006. Guyana has been purchased by China BMGG and will increase there production to over 200,000 tons in 2009. Australia shut down production in 2008 and Surinam has elected to not send any Calcined bauxite to the United States. "One critical factor in mineral reserves reporting, as well as mine-reserves reconciliation, is the impact of dilution and ore loss in the mining process. This paper considers the implications of various factors on dilution and ore loss projections, by orebody geometry, mining method, and ore control systems. We also discuss the implications of resource estimation methodology on dilution for reserves. DEFINITIONS Dilution and ore loss are two critical concepts in mining, which address the differences encountered between modeled grade and tonnages and actual production. Dilution is volume increase and grade reduction caused by multiple factors, chief among which are mining of waste material along ore-waste contacts, mining of internal waste as ore, and misclassification of waste as ore in the ore control process. There are also geostatistical and estimation aspects sometimes lumped with dilution, including the volume-variance effect (the tendency for small volumes of material to include a less regular distribution of grade than large volumes of material). Ore loss is described as reductions of ore volumes in the mining process due to misclassification of ore as waste in the ore control process, exclusion of discontinuous mineralization from mining due to geometry or continuity, and mechanical losses in the mining process. Dilution is typically taken as an increase in tonnes of ore with no change in contained metal (and thus results in a reduction in grade.) (Some workers consider the likely grade of the diluting material as well, particularly in deposits with gradational grade boundaries—this will be addressed later in the text.) Ore loss is typically taken as a reduction in tonnes at average grade of the ore, and thus results in a reduction in both tonnes and contained metal. In order to maximize the benefits obtained from flocculating agents when used as settling aids in high rate and conventional thickeners, it is often necessary to dilute the thickener feed prior to flocculant addition. In some cases, no flocculation at all is possible unless dilution water is used. The most common method of diluting thickener feed has been to recirculate some of the thickener overflow by means of a centrifugal pumping system. This represents a significant capital and operating cost. Supaflo Technologies of Australia has developed and patented an internal recirculation method known as Auto Dilution (or "Autodil") which is based on the principle that an hydraulic head differential exists between the inside and outside of the feedwell because of the higher S. G. of the pulp inside the feedwell, By installing non-return ports in the feedwell wall at the appropriate level, supernatant solution flows into the feedwell at a calculated rate and dilutes the feed without any need for external recirculation of overflow.

Mixer-settler extractors, among the oldest forms of extraction equipment, have been used since the beginning of this century. Over the past years, a very large number of mixer-settler devices have been designed and operated. Both batch and continuous flow mixer-settlers have been used. The continuous flow mixer-settler extractor offers a great number of advantages over other extraction equipment. The main advantage of the continuous flow mixer-settler is that it is a compact device. A large number of stages can be assembled in a relatively small area, and more stages can be added fairly easily. Many improvements have been made in the design of mixer-settlers. These improvements occurred in almost every phase of mixer-settler' operation; interface control, mixer design, intrastage pumping, interstage flow of the two liquid phases, and stage construction. It is believed that Barstow1 used one of the first continuous mixer-settler extractors. This mixer-settler had concurrent flow within each stage and countercurrent flow overall. The flow for both phases took place by gravity. The Barstow device and other early mixer-settlers had no separate interface control for each stage, therefore, "tilting" of the stages was necessary. In 1934 Holley and Mott2 designed a mixer-settler in which the heavy phase was recirculated within each stage by the use of a valve controlled central line instead of by a pump. Gordon and Zeigler3 in 1939 were among the first to use an adjustable valve to control the interface levels in a mixer-settler, making tilting of the extractor unnecessary. JAMES DONALD FORRESTER 32.1-EXAMINATIONS The field examination of a mineral deposit or mining enterprise requires a comprehensive effort to determine all natural and man-made factors bearing upon the problem to be resolved by the investigation. Therefore, the purpose to be served by an examination must be fully understood before the engineer assumes responsibility, and before actual field work starts. A clear understanding facilitates planning the approach to the project for maximum efficiency and thorough acquisition of information. It follows, of course, that the engineer has the necessary knowledge and experience to discharge satisfactorily the professional obligations attending the project. Some studies are in herently more complex than others, and the requirements of the problem are not always the same. Some examinations require the detailed investigation of large operating or nonoperating mines or, possibly, of mining districts; others involve more or less reconnaissance studies; and still others rela¬tively small undeveloped mineral occurrences. Likewise, the primary objective of some analyses may be the evaluation of a mineral deposit or a mining property, whereas in other projects the major objective may be guiding mining or drilling work in the discovery of new or hidden ore bodies and mineral-bearing structures. Thus, the possible range of any given examination may extend in varying degree through one, or more, of the following types of procedures: 32.1.1--GEOGRAPHIC ENVIRONMENT Studies of geographic environment should be made to ascertain the general physical situation in the area under consideration and to identify those correlative factors hearing on the, findings resulting from the field examination. This commonly will include determinations of: A. Location of the field area with respect to the state and county in which it occurs and, if feasible, a record of the township, range and section with reference to the principal meridian, and base line (or lines) that apply. For examinations in foreign countries, or in regions outside the continental United States, it is desirable that the field locality, in each instance, be identified with reference to the boundaries of some form of political entity essentially comparable in character to the divisions used in the United States. B. Distances from existing communities and related service centers, via: 1. Roads, both improved and unimproved. 2. Railroads. 3. Navigable waterways. 4. Airports. C. Topographic relief as it will influence the selection of 1. Pit site or positions of underground mine portals or shaft sites, including dump areas. 2. Mill site, including tailings disposal area.

Booster fans in underground coal mines are often located using the concept of a neutral point. Normally, intake airways are maintained at higher absolute pressure than return airways, so air leaks from intake to return. By adding a significant pressure force to a region of a ventilation system, booster fans installed in a return airway can increase the pressure in the return so that air leaks from return to intake. This is commonly referred to as recirculation. The neutral point occurs at the location in the system where the pressure difference between the intake and the return airway(s) is zero and at this point there is no leakage or recirculation. Ideally, placing a booster fan near the neutral point minimizes leakage and recirculation; however, in practice the position of the neutral point is not static and it changes as the ventilation system parameters change. This paper presents a study of how changes in the system parameters affect the location of the neutral point in a model coal mine ventilation system. First the effects of booster fan pressure and location on the neutral point are evaluated. Next the effect of increasing mine distance, and therefore mine resistance, on the location of the neutral point and the magnitude of recirculation is evaluated.

As a part of the Department of the Interior's rutile and titaniferous materials development program conducted under the Defense Production Act, the Bureau of Mines investigated the potential for producing national stockpile grade rutile from plant products of phosphate beneficiation plants operating in the central Florida pebble phosphate district. The potential for producing ilmenite, zircon, and monazite concentrates from the plant products was also investigated. Results of these studies indicated that 3,000 to 6,000 tons of rutile, 28,000 to 55,000 tons of ilmenite, 9,000 to 19,000 tons of zircon, and 400 to 800 tons of monazite passed through the plant circuits annually. All of these minerals are presently being sent to waste ponds. Beneficiation of a bulk heavy mineral concentrate separated from the amine flotation tailing (froth product) of numerous plants in the district showed that it was possible to produce a rutile concentrate containing over 94 percent Ti02. Additional studies showed that over 70 percent of the Ti02 in the rutile concentrate could be isolated in a product containing 98.0 percent Ti02. The studies also showed that it was possible to produce ilmenite concentrates containing 63 percent Ti02, zircon concen¬trates containing 65 percent Zr02, monazite concentrates containing over 85 percent monazite [(Ce,La,Y,Th) (P04)], and xenotime concentrates containing over 35 percent xenotime (YPO4).

Surface subsidence is becoming an increasingly important factor in the economics of mining Louisiana salt domes due to, amongst others, excessive shaft deformations and land loss to encroaching sea water. The vast majority of subsidence studies have been undertaken on bedded, tabular deposits. It is important to understand the causes of subsidence due to mining domal salt and how it can be minimized. The paper will review the major differences between subsidence caused by domal and tabular evaporite mines, the problems encountered in predicting subsidence, the factors that influence subsidence and, finally, possible alternative mining methods.

Computer use has become an integral part of mine planning at Kennecott Copper Corporation?s Utah Copper Division, Bingham Canyon mine. Engineers are using the computer for development drilling calculations, mineralization grade interpolations, ore value summaries, long-range mining plans and short- range mining plans. The versatility of the computer has made it possible to explore many mining plan variations and to develop plans covering varying time intervals and production rates. This paper will summarize computer use in long-range mine planning, tell how short-range mining plans are prepared by conventional methods and discuss the development and application of short-range mine planning by computer.

Uranium exploration projects are known to be active or planned also in Guayana, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Uruguay in South America; in the UAR, Nigeria, Angola, Mozambique, Malawi, Kenya, and Somali in Africa; and in Greece, Iran, Pakistan., Indonesia, and New Zealand. The above list, to which several might be added makes a total of at least 43 nations actively interested in exploration for nuclear raw materials. As we consider the distribution of the world's uranium resources, it is interesting to note that roughly one third of the total occurs in deposits that are economically dependant upon another product. The very large reserves of South Africa could not be produced for uranium alone, but gold has carried a sufficient part of the total cost that uranium can be recovered profitably. Approximately 40 percent of the US reserves, or 120,000 tons, are estimated as by-product recovery from porphyry copper and phosphate operations, but these reserves are not presently in production. The remaining two thirds of the world's uranium reserves have been sought, developed, and produced primarily for their uranium content. Those deposits are estimated to contain 613,000 tons of uranium oxide recoverable at less than $10 per pound. Nearly half of that uranium occurs in unmetamorphosed sandstone hosts, mostly of late Phanerozoic age--the Colorado Plateau type. About 30 percent is contained in the quartz pebble conglomerates of southern Ontario, Canada, and 20 percent is in magmatic-related deposits--veins, contact deposits, mineralized breccias, etc.

Recently, neutron-induced gamma spectrometry has been introduced and gained provisional acceptance as a method for continuous automated analysis of coal. Instrumentation based on this technique has been under development for and in testing at coal preparation plants and a coal gasifier. To provide a deeper understanding of, and extended capability in applying this method, theoretical calculations have been performed of the absorption of thermal neutrons by various coal compositions, and the thermal neutron capture prompt gamma emission spectra produced by these compositions have been calculated. Selected results of these computer calculations and the computer generated spectra are presented.

In an effort to find better ways to dispose of potentially toxic material, the effect of longitudinal and lateral dispersion on the dilution of toxic fluids was investigated numerically and experimentally. Homogeneous and non- homogeneous tests were conducted to model this effect for surface mine backfills. These tests used a high-density zone [package] to bury undesirable material. The studies, utilizing inert tracers, showed that an increase in density in a soil will decrease the maximum level of tracer in the discharge. Within the range of experiments performed and using only natural materials, a 65 percent reduction in peak concentration was obtained.

"Trace element analysis of placer gold can be used as a valuable exploration tool in order to determine the original deposit source and locating lode gold deposits. Placer gold collected from multiple districts in New Mexico and Alaska, coupled with a broad database of previously analyzed placer gold samples indicate correlations between chemical signatures (especially gold, silver, and copper) and type of deposits (i.e., Au-rich copper porphyry deposits, Au porphyry deposits, and epithermal deposits). By completing a chemical analysis and determining the particle morphology of placer gold collected from these districts using an electron microprobe, patterns in the chemical signatures from each location can be used to examine chemical variability (1) within the individual placer gold particles, (2) within the same district and (3) among different districts. INTRODUCTION Although there are numerous past studies on the chemical composition of placer gold by Newberry et al. (1997), Melchiorre (2001, 2009), Townley et al. (2003), and McLemore et al. (2014), the gold analyzed tends to be collected from one or few specific districts. Rarely do those studies compare compositional results to additional districts, or elaborate on the correlation between the elemental composition of the placer gold and the original deposit source for the respective districts. This research analyzes the composition of placer gold from multiple districts and within the same district. There are a number of elements, which can, in various quantities, be present in placer gold particles. Native gold can be in complete solid solution with native silver and contain additional elements including Cu, As, Pb, Fe, and S. The chemical signature of the gold is determined by the thermodynamic conditions of precipitation and transport as well as the total metal content of the system. As Townley et al. (2003) explains, “These thermodynamic conditions and metal budget differ from one type of hydrothermal deposit to another, and hence different deposit types will each have a characteristic gold compositional signature.” Identifying this signature can be a highly valuable tool in exploring for gold, as it can not only be used to determine the original source deposit of the placer gold, but provide valuable insight as to the erosion level of the present deposit."

An acid mine drainage sludge containing 0.26% nickel, 0.21 % cobalt and 4.5% manganese was leached in a one-liter reactor with sulfuric acid in the absence and presence of sodium sulfite. The effects of temperature (25°C and 52°C) and sodium sulfite concentration (up to 0.03 molar) on the leaching rate were particularly investigated. The leaching rates of nickel and cobalt with sulfuric acid have been determined to be controlled by diffusion through product layer. It has been found that effective leaching conditions to give more than 90% extraction of nickel, cobalt and manganese while keeping the iron extraction below 10% come with an elevated temperature and a low sodium sulfite concentration at pH 3; for example, 52°C and 0.01 molar sodium sulfite.
