In a continuing effort to upgrade tunnel design and construction practice, the New York City Transit Authority sponsored a geotechnical monitoring program on a recently completed section of the E. 63rd Street line in mid-town Manhattan. The purpose of the program was to document rock behavior as well as temporary and final rock support systems to provide a possible basis for either confirmation or modificification to design methods and construction specifications. This paper describes those portions of the study associated with rock behavior and temporary support systems. The entire study included monitoring of rock movements above the tunnel as well as adjacent to a 36.6m (120 ft) shaft, monitoring of stresses in steel ribs, monitoring of loads in rock bolts in two test sections and monitoring of stresses in the final concrete lining. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Route 131-A, Section 4 is located in mid-town Manhattan extending from under the Central-Park Zoo on Fifth Avenue eastward under 63rd Street to the end of contract between Madison and Park Avenue. Figure 1 is a Project Locus Map. The contract included approximately 355m (1165 l.f.) of 4 track tunnel(13.4m (44 ft) wide by 13.7m (45 ft) high excavated dimensions) plus a 22.9m (75 ft) by 19.8m (65 ft) by 36.6m (120 ft) deep ventilation shaft. The entire tunnel and most of the excavation shaft was excavated in metamorphic rock, known locally as the Manhattan Schist. The depth to tunnel invert varied from approximately 27.4m (90 ft) at the west end of the contract to 35.Om (115 ft) at the east end. Rock cover above the excavated crown varied from approximately 6.7m (22 ft) at the approximate mid-point of the contract to 18.9m (62 ft) at the western end. Many of you are familiar with the Washington Metro Project. However, inasmuch as some may not be, and others may want to refresh their memories regarding certain facets of the project, I will cite a few summary details about the rail transit system we are constructing. That summary will also give each of us a common point for departure as I develop the principal thoughts that I want to leave with you. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is an interstate agency established by Compact between the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and approved by the United States Congress. Currently, the Authority has approval to build and operate a 101-mile (162.5 km) regional rapid rail transit system as shown on Appendix A. Of that total, 38 miles (61.2 km) will be in D. C., 32 miles (51.5 km) in Maryland and 30 miles (48.3 km) in Virginia. (Mileage figures, because of rounding error, do not add to 101 miles.) Referring again to the 101-mile total, 48 miles (77.2 km) will be underground, 42 miles (67.6 km) on the surface and 10 miles (16.1 km) on aerial structures. Of the 48 miles (77.2 km) that are underground, 15 miles (24.1 km) are rock tunnel, 14 miles (22.5 km) are earth tunnel, 0.5 miles (0.8 km) 9.s sunken tube and 19 miles (30.6 inn) are cut-and-cover construction. The system will include 86 stations, with 51 of them underground. Referring again to the full 86 stations, 43 will be in D. C., 23 in Maryland and 20 in Virginia. We currently have 37 miles (59.5 km) of line and 41 stations in operations as shown on Appendix B. Also shown on Appendix B is another 16 mile (25.7 km) increment and 13 stations which have been substantially completed, but are not yet in service. Additionally,

INTRODUCTION The mining of gold commenced on the Witwatersrand in 1884, and reached a mature state by about 1910, when nearly 20 million metric tons were mined. Mining has continued on the central Witwatersrand, the area of the first mining, at a similar rate until recent years. As a result, well over 1 billion tons of gold mining wastes have been dumped along a line over 80 km long, centred on Johannesburg and stretching from Randfontein in the west to Nigel in the east. (see Figure 1). The population of this conurbation, which straddles the line of mining, has grown to about 5 million. In 1922 uranium was first discovered as a constituent of the ore (and thus of the wastes). Investigations in the 1940's revealed that values near Johannesburg were low, but that, at the western and eastern ends of the central Witwatersrand line, and in the new areas centred on the towns of Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Welkom up to 200 km from Johannesburg, values were adequate to permit uranium recovery. Commercial production commenced in 1952, and by 1979 over 100 000 tons of uranium oxide had been produced. There thus arises on the central Witwatersrand nearly 1,3 billion tons of slimes containing an average of about 0,005% uranium and about 1,8% FeS2. The material grading is about 70%-75µm, and the primary mineral is silica (over 85%). The material is contained in dams constructed hydraulically. A typical dam has an area of about 100 hectares and there are over 6000 ha under slimes dams in the area of concern. The treatment of these dams for uranium recovery commenced in 1977. The situation has thus arisen whereby potential uranium ores have unwittingly been dumped in significant quantities within a major metropolis over a period of nearly a century. The purpose of this note is to review the experience arising from the potential hazard over a considerable time.

Two rare evaporite minerals, nahcolite (NaHC03) and trona (Na2C03?NaHC03?2H20), are both widely used in the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) The largest natural carbonate deposits (trona) are in Wyoming, USA, the second largest deposits are in Turkey, in a lacustrine basin (Beypazari) where nahcolite and trona are located within the Miocene Hirka Formation. The Hirka Formation is mainly composed of bituminous shale, claystone, marlstone, tuffltuffite, and dolomitic limestones. Although numerous trona beds are interbedded within the above mentioned sedimentary units, there are only two beds of trona that are of economic interest. The lower part of the lower trona bed is rich in double carbonates such as pirrsonite (NA2C03? CaC03?2H20) and gaylussite (Na2C03?CaC03?5H20), indicating a change in Ca/Na ratio in the solutions which are responsible for the formation of soda occurrences. In contrast, the upper part of the upper trona bed is rich in nahcolite. This minerological pattern has been found in every drill- hole in the basin. While both trona beds average up to 10 m (33 ft) thick, the average thickness of nahcolite is approximately 0.5 m (1.6 ft). Also, thin section studies show that many fibrous and lath-like trona crystals contain small radial nahcolite crystals; all of them are euhedral and equi-dimensional. Geochemical studies of major, minor, and trace element contents also support this coexistence. Macroscopic and microscopic observations reveal that the nahcolites principally were formed as a result of an incongruent dissolution process of trona. In conclusion, the presence of nahcolite in the Beypazari basin is due to the dissolution process of trona, particularly during the last stage of evaporation, as a result of fresh water entering the basin. During that time, an increase in the HC03/ C03 ratio resulted in nahcolite-trona phase transitions.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to describe in engineering terms the singular and basic operational kinematics of all excavating and bulk handling equipment. The safe and efficient use of equipment will be fostered by enabling the engineer to conceptually duplicate the operators' "tasks" in directing and controlling it. A simple graphical and notational scheme will be introduced to define the essential gross repetitive motions. The significance of this effort includes filling a vital analytical gap at the work face, and in establishing direct communications between the engineer and equipment operator. Since all types and sizes of earth- moving equipment are covered, a major concern has been to integrate equipment specialties into d single encompassing discipline. Equipment types are closely related to the working conditions, and their selection and evaluation are also considered. The extension to human factors analysis is natural and predictable. Since human [actors are involved, the operational analysis can also be considered a catch-all for many subtle vagaries. BACKGROUND Symbolic modelling linked to a notational system will be developed and intensively used. This constitutes the "language of science," providing a shorthand method which gives immediate recognition, is fluent, explicit, reinforcing, unequivocal and provides limitless associations. Many examples of symbolic modelling exist in chemistry, physics, the military, engineering sciences and it is a major tool in mapping. Its use is so ubiquitous that it often goes unnoticed. On the other hand it must be realized that something is lost in simplifying and idealizing what is an extraordinarily complex occurrence. The components describing the basic operational kinematics of equipment include: (1) the vehicular motions as a rigid body and (2) the job-end motions focussing on excavating (Adler, 1985). These provide all of the components in the load-haul-dump sequence (L-H-D) , and will yield three dimensional expressions. Complex patterns can also be assembled from these simple elements. An existing equipment designation employed in earthmoving will be integrated into this approach (Carson, 1961). Along with the basic motions, corresponding working conditions will be noted.

The emission of methane in the coal mine working faces has two immediate impacts with regard to coal mine planning. Firstly, at the planning stage, the coal mine ventilation system must be designed such that airflows in the faces keep the concentrations of the gas in faces areas to below one percent. If the concentrations were greater than one percent, the production machine has to be shut down resulting in a loss of productive time. In an extreme case, concentration can reach explosibility limits which may lead to ignitions and explosions. Secondly, in excessively gassy coal seams, several alternatives can be applied to the mine layout configuration, and the mining method to be predicted for the extraction of coal, so as to insure a productive and safe operation. In this study a two-phase, two-dimensional finite-difference model was used to predict the methane emission rates into active mine working area under several methane drainage schemes. The numerical model utilizes a recently developed multi-mechanistic flow theory which describes the flow of methane in an heterogeneous and anisotropic coal seam. Transport of methane in the micropore structure of the coal is described by the Fick's law of dif- fusion under the influence of existing concentration gradient, while flow in the more permeable butt and face cleats (macropore spaces) is formulated by Dar- cy's law under the influence of existing pressure gradient. The desorption of the methane is accounted with the aid of a quasi-steady kinetic sorption model. A series of simulation studies were conducted in a systematic manner by sifting through the parameters associated with the coal seam characteristics and the degasification strategies in order to understand those which most significantly affect the methane emission rates in the face areas during mining. Along these lines, the effects of coal seam properties such as thickness, porosity, permeability, sorption characteristics and scheduling of drainage process against the mining operation have been isolated to understand the role of each individual parameter on the methane emission rates.

A new face ventilation system was needed at the Allied Chemical Trona mine, near Green River, Wyoming. The development of an exhaust manifold face ventilation system came from a need to reduce the dust and noise concentration level while maintaining methane control at the continuous miner working face. Dust laden air from a heading being driven by a continuous miner was contaminating the intake air in the mine around the roof bolter operator and adjacent headings. Each working heading was exhausted into the last open crosscut by a face fan. A face fan would contaminate the adjacent downstream heading with dust-laden air until a high dust concentration developed in the final entry before the returns. A face ventilation system was needed to give the exhaust of each heading an individual path to the return air. In addition, the system could not interfere with the present room and pillar mining process. A manifold system of rigid duct ventilation tubing was designed using the existing fans in a parallel arrangement. Each system was to consist of the rigid duct tubing in three headings junctioned together at the last open crosscut and exhausted at a common branch in the return air. Each heading was to have its own damper (or valve) so that air could be directed where it was most needed. The system was installed using both round and oval rigid duct ventilation tubing to minimize head loss and to allow proper ground clearance for mining machinery. Two fans in parallel were used to exhaust three headings. By adjusting the valves at each heading, up to 18.0 kcfm (9.36 cu m per sec) could be exhausted from one heading and still keep the methane level controlled in the other two headings. The manifold exhaust system has proven to be an efficient, long lasting ventilation system at the Alchem Mine. It has reduced the dust and noise exposure levels at the working faces while keeping the methane level under control.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE "Blessed be the Lord my strength, which teacheth my hands to war and my fingers to fight." Thus sang David three thousand years ago, in tacit acceptance of the condition of war, and in praise of the exceptional military skills with which this warrior king of Israel was endowed. He had cause to exult, for he had consolidated King Saul's conquests and added new ones of his own, not least of which was the capture of Jerusalem. David revealed in this operation that his mastery of the military arts embraced not only the weaponry and tactics of his day, but also strategy and that oldest of intelligence techniques: spies. The Jebusites, who built Jerusalem, had encompassed the city with the first of its many walls, but had neglected to incorporate the sole reliable water supply within its perimeter. This was Ain Gihon, today called the Fountain of the Virgin, which bubbled out on the east slope of Mount Ophel, one of the ridges on which Jerusalem was built, and drained eastward into the Kidron Valley. Water was brought into the city in the traditional manner: by women descending the stony trail outside the wall to fill their jars at the spring. But this essential daily activity was vulnerable to interruption by a hostile force outside the walls. To remedy this weakness, the Jebusites had driven a gallery from the spring a short distance into the water-bearing limestone under the city, and there cut a small collecting basin in the rock, a common way to develop springs throughout this arid region. But then the Jebusites dug a small vertical shaft from the roof of the gallery above the cistern upward about 15 m. From the upper end of this shaft, they constructed a narrow inclined tunnel with rock-cut steps leading up to the city streets. Thus the water supply could be reached even in time of siege.

Using pure albite and quartz minerals, the separation of albite from quartz using mixed cationic/anionic reagent schemes is assessed through Hallimond flotation, zeta potential and diffuse reflectance FTIR studies. The reagent schemes are tested in bench-scale flotation for the separation of albite from Greek Stefania feldspar ore. The single mineral flotation tests showed the feasibility of selective albite flotation from quartz at around pH 2 using a mixture of cationic diamine and anionic sulfonate collectors or a combined cationic-anionic collector of diamine-dioleate. In contrast to the selective flotation response of albite at pH 2, where albite is slightly negatively charged and quartz possess zero charge, the zeta potential and FTIR studies elucidate similar adsorption behavior of mixed collectors on both of the minerals. The infrared spectra not only showed the co-adsorption of anionic sulfonate or oleate with diamine on the surface but also showed that the diamine adsorption increases with the presence of anionic collector. The intrusion of anionic collector in between adjacent surface alkyl ammonium ions decreases electrostatic head-head repulsion, thereby increasing the diamine adsorption by increasing the hydrophobic tail-tail bonds. The discrepancy in the flotation and adsorption results at pH 2 is attributed to the coarse and fine size particles employed in these studies, respectively. The comparable adsorption on fine particles of albite and quartz at pH 2 is explained by the interaction of ammonium ions on silanol groups by hydrogen bonding besides electrostatic interactions. The bench-scale flotation results indeed showed that selective albite flotation takes place only after desliming the feed material. An albite concentrate exceeding 10% (by weight) Na20 is produced from a material containing about 6.5% (by weight) Na20, where an albite product of more than 9% (by weight) Na20 is considered to be valuable. Every operation connected with the working of a deep-level mine has, to a greater or lesser extent, a direct bearing on the costs of production, and hence, profitability of the mine. If adequate mine planning is not done in the early stages in the life of a mine, considerable expenditure can result from the cost of maintaining mine service tunnels, production delays in stopes caused by poor strata control, distortion of fittings in hoisting shafts, rockbursts and so on. In fact, the optimum profitability of a deep-level, hard-rock mine can only be achieved if the layout of the shaft systems, ore passes, tunnels, stoping areas and other underground excavations are designed to withstand or accommodate the rock stress conditions that will be created by mining operations. In South Africa where the deepest mines in the world are located, access to the underground workings of most deep-level gold mines is via vertical shaft systems and a network of tunnels connecting the shaft systems to the stoping areas. In current practice, there are two basic methods of extracting the gold-bearing reef,* namely, the scattered stoping method and the longwall stoping method. The choice of the stoping method is governed largely by the anticipated gold distribution and payability of the reef in the area, the geological conditions, the degree and complexity of faulting and dyke intrusions, the depth at which the gold-bearing reef is to be mined and the inclination and width of the reef. The longwall system was first introduced at the East 717 Rand Proprietary Mines Limited in 1942 in an effort to combat the rockburst hazard which appeared to increase with increase in depth. This mining method became standard practice on that mine for stoping operations 700 ft. below the surface. Since that date, several deep mines on the Central Rand, East Rand and West Wits gold mining areas have adopted this method.

We evaluated a new process for remediation of acid rock drainage (ARD). The process treats ARD with intermittently fluidized beds of granular limestone maintained within a continuous flow reactor pressurized with CO2. Tests were performed over a thirty day period at the Toby Creek mine drainage treatment plant, Elk County, Pennsylvania in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Equipment performance was established at operating pressures of 0,34,82, and 117 kPa using an ARD flow of 227 L/min. The ARD had the following characteristics: pH, 3.1; temperature, 10 OC; dissolved oxygen, 6.4 mg/L; acidity, 260 mg/5; total iron, 21 mg/L; aluminum, 22 mg/L; manganese, 7.5 mg/L; and conductivity, 1400 uS/cm. In all cases tested, processed ARD was net alkaline with mean pH and alkalinities of 6.7 and 59 mg/L at a CO2 pressure of 0 kPa, 6.6 and 158 mg/L at 34 kPa, 7.4 and 240 mg/L at 82 kPa, and 7.4 and 290 mg/L at 117 kPa Processed ARD alkalinities were correlated to the settled bed depth (p<0.001) and CO2 pressure (p<0.001). Iron, aluminum, and manganese removal efficiencies of 96%, 99%, and 5%, respectively, were achieved with filtration following treatment. No indications of metal hydroxide precipitation or armoring of the limestone were observed. The surplus alkalinity established at 82 kPa was successful in treating an equivalent of 1136 L/min (fivefold dilution) of the combined three ARD streams entering the Toby Creek Plant. This side-stream capability provides savings in treatment unit scale as well as flexibility in treatment effect. The capability of the system to handle higher influent acidity was tested by elevating the acidity to 5000 mg/L with sulfuric acid. Net alkaline effluent was produced, indicating applicability of the process to highly acidic ARD.

"Construction activities account for a large share of the global Greenhouse Gas emission. In the past 10 years, project decision-makers and researchers have been paying more attention to the carbon emission of tunnel projects. In this paper we study the carbon emission calculation in shield tunneling. The objective of this paper is to: (1) analyze the complex variables which affect the total emission of shield tunneling; (2) develop and illustrate a new data-mining-based method to estimate the carbon emission in the construction phase; (3) assess the emission prediction reliability of a data-mining-based method—the Randomforst model, with R programming language. This study is based on a large-diameter shield tunnel built in Shanghai, China, and shows that a reliable predictive performance can be achieved with this new data-mining-based method. INTRODUCTION Climate change caused by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission has been a hot topic in recent 20 years. Both governments and non-government-organizations are trying its best to control the climate change. Since the 1990s, the general consensus is that carbon emission reduction and carbon sinking (the work of capturing the emitted carbon) are two ways of mitigating the global warming effect, with the former being more exercisable. The challenge posed by global warming also motivates the project decision-makers to take measures to reduce the GHG emission. The 5th Assessment & Report on Climate Change (published by IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) suggests that building industry contributes to 5% of the total direct emission. The building industry has shown more awareness of the impact of GHG emissions with construction activities. Shield tunnels act as an important component of the infrastructure system, and have been the dominant way of utilizing the underground space, as well as a competitive alternative to passageway underneath rivers. To study the environmental effects of shield tunneling, there is a need to quantify the carbon emission of shield tunnel construction."

Natural acid drainage is generated from pyritic rock underlying 17 percent of the upper Alamosa River basin. About one-third of these acid producing rocks have nil carbonate buffering capacity; there the streams carry significant acid plus dissolved Al, Cu, Fe, and Zn. In part of the basin, aquatic life is limited by the natural acid drainage. In the four miles where the Alamosa flows through pyritic rock the river grows toxic to trout. Inhospitable conditions continue downstream for at least another four miles. The waters become refreshed, naturally, through metal dilution, metal oxide and hydroxide precipitation, and acid neutralization. Water quality fluctuates in seasonal cycles. Dissolved metals and acid, which are generated year-round by weathering, are stored over winter in the unsaturated zone in the retained water and in soluble metal- sulfate minerals that form by evaporation of acid-metal waters. Seasonal discharge variations cause metal concentrations and pH to shift in the trunk stream; the acid drainage source streams, however, shift only slightly by season. In early spring, metal concentrations and metal loads increase as metals and acid are flushed from the unsaturated zones by melting snow. Peak metal loads occur at this time, and precede peak flow by up to two months. Other metal load peaks occur during peak flow and monsoon flow, even though metal concentrations are diluted at that time by precipitation. In late spring and thereafter, discharge of neutral pH water wanes, so trunk stream pH falls and metal concentrations return to previous high levels. Metal concentrations appear to be low from November through January when dilution from precipitation is lowest, but rise in February to near peak yearly concentrations. In years with high monsoonal flows, metal-laden waters apparently flush from the unsaturated zone and metal concentrations remain low from about October through January. In years with low monsoonal flows, however, metal concentrations in October and November at least are higher.

"The second survey of global copper leaching operations has been completed, the data published in 1998 has been updated. A survey questionnaire was sent to 40 identified copper leach operations around the world including those leach properties still in operation that responded to the 1998 survey. This paper lists the results of 26 operations that responded to the survey. Selected information from the survey is represented in graphical form. INTRODUCTION Copper leaching was first performed by truck dumping huge monolithic stockpiles of ore and flooding the surface with leach solution or lixiviant with little understanding to the parameters that support optimum recovery of the metal. Heap leaching has evolved into a controlled process whereby a complex low grade ore is stacked in shallow lifts (under 10 m in most cases). The ore is usually crushed and agglomerated, conveyor stacked on an engineered containment system (leach pad) and irrigated in a controlled manner. The lixiviant chemistry is designed to extract the optimum amount of metal from the ore. At first glance, heap leaching appears to be simple in nature. In fact, it is a very complex process. A plethora of technologies such as material handling, environmental control, analytical techniques, solution chemistry, hydrology and many others contribute to the design and operation of a heap leach. Heap leaching requires an inter-disciplinary approach between geologists, mining engineers and metallurgists. Many operational factors affect heap leaching. The process must address climatic factors, flexible operation, quality control before and after leaching, physical characteristics of the ore, geology, mineralogy, reagent consumption, solution application rate and methods (wobblers or emitters), particle size, and favorable conditions for bacterial growth and survival. Predicting, troubleshooting, and optimization of leach recovery is a significant challenge when considering the number of variables involved and their interactions The survey updates many of these key operating parameters to the current state of the art. It should provide the reader an excellent benchmarking summary of these factors on a site-by-site basis."

Silverton was the queen city of the western mining towns in the early 1900s. Located high in the San Juan Mountains, the town constantly grew and changed. Yet, it was subject to the vagaries and whims of economics, politics and disasters, natural or otherwise. Breweries, smelters and sawmills serviced Silverton&apos;s swelling mining population, which reached several thousand at its peak. Two trains a day ran from Durango to Silverton, in addition to trains running from Silverton over the top of Red Mountain on to Ironton. They ran up Cement Creek to the little town of Gladstone and up the Animas River Valley to Howardsville, Eureka and Animas Forks. During these prosperous times, construction flourished. There were plenty of wooden structures, and many of these stand today. The first brick buildings were built by bricklayer Patrick Stanley in 1877. It took quite a while for the first car to arrive. Almost 28 years passed from the coming of the first train to the arrival of the first car. It was brought over 3,840-m (12,600-ft) Stony Pass from Creede, CO, in an incredible journey retold years later by Louis Wyman. "Dad&apos;s daydreams were not the idle musings or the fantasies of a mystic," Wyman said. "They had a way of erupting into reality. He advocated and built good roads," he said. "During the summer of 1910, he was up to his sweatband in a project that took in half the state of Colorado. He envisioned an automobile highway, unheard of at that time, running southwest from Denver through the scenic grandeur of the high Colorado Rockies. The road would traverse a thousand miles or more of the state&apos;s finest recreational land finally circling back to Denver. Years later, when all of the county roads had been connected, it became known as &apos;Colorado&apos;s Thousand-Mile Circle Route.&apos; Of course, Silverton and the San Juans were bright stars along the way."

There is much in common between the requirements of open-pit mining and quarrying operations. Both involve the extraction of large volumes of material from surface excavations. The principal differences are of degree: open-pit mining of materials such as coal or gold generally involves the extraction of only small volumes of &apos;mineral&apos; and large volumes of waste-they are operations with very high stripping ratios, and are made viable only because of the high unit value of the extracted mineral. In quarrying operations, the unit value of the mineral - sand, aggregate, limestone, or clay - is much lower, but stripping ration Are also lower. Thus the same techniques of geological modelling, reserve estimation, and pit planning are applicable, as is shown in two examples from the British quarrying industry. In each case, a primary requirement is the definition of production volume or tonnage. Sometimes, this need may be addressed simply by the use of a survey data processing package. However, in other cases, such as the two examples addressed in this paper, of sand and clay quarries, detailed assessment of the variation of mineral grades is a vital part of the exercise, and simple volumetric modelling cannot in itself be sufficient. In these cases, a block model approach using simple logical and numerical post-processing is also required to obtain required parameters for commercial classification of the products to be extracted. Pit designs themselves may be optimised by use of algorithms such as Lerchs-Grossmann, but the value of mineral produced can be dependent on factors other than its grade in any one part of a single pit, and the &apos;optimised&apos; pit itself must be considered only a good sub-optimal. Given the right degree of healthy skepticism, and a software package with sufficient flexibility to be adapted readily to the rather different requirements of the quarrying industry, there is no reason why the quarrying industry should not benefit from the many years of investment in mining software technology.

Four different types of fire suppression systems were evaluated in large-scale fire experiments to study the effect of air velocity on the effectiveness to extinguish conveyor belt fires. The four different types of suppression systems were water sprinkler, deluge type water spray, and two different dry chemical fire suppression systems. The large-scale fire tests were conducted with 72-in-wide fire resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration flame resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G Flame Test). Each fire suppression system was tested at air velocities of 500-550 feet per minute (fpm) and 1350-1500 fpm. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each fire suppression system. Both of the water-based fire suppression systems were able to suppress the fire to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire extinguisher. However, the amount of water needed to suppress the fire to the point where a miner could walk up to extinguish any smoldering belting was greater than the current MSHA regulations require. MSHA regulations only require 10 minutes of water supply to the suppression system. In the test set up neither of these systems would have suppressed the fire had the water been turned off to the system after 10 minutes. The dry chemical suppression systems produced mixed results. Dry chemical suppression system A did not suppress the conveyor belt fire at either air velocity. Dry chemical system B suppressed the fire at 500 fpm air velocity, but produced mixed results at the higher air velocity. Details are presented on the large-scale fire test set-up, arrangement of the fire suppression systems, and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity on fire suppression system design and performance. INTRODUCTION As the experience in Canada indicates, it is becoming more and more common to evaluate major mining projects, especially those relating to uranium, with respect to their environmental effects. As part of this evaluation public hearings are becoming the rule rather than the exception. In this area the 1970&apos;s and presumably the 1980&apos;s can be characterized as the age of "Environmental Assessments" or "Environmental Impact Statements" which form the basis of these hearings. These documents tend to require significant amounts of research, data collection and effort in their preparation, and tend to be closely scrutinized by the hearing body and by groups in opposition to the project. This opposition is becoming more organized and sophisticated. The assessment or impact document, together with the evidence supporting it during the hearings can: (a) mean the difference between a lengthy and hence costly hearing and a smoother, shorter and less expensive one, (b) result in requirements for extensive modification at the expense of the proponent to his project, (c) result in the proponent being required to carry out extensive studies, research or monitoring programs, and (d) conceivably may in certain situations result in the project actually being turned down. Therefore, while on the one hand it is important to have available technical answers to concerns relating to uranium, its associated and perceived hazards, it is getting more and more important to be able to present these answers in both a written and oral format in such a way as to meet the criticism and concerns of the opposition, be they citizens in general or special interest groups including environmental lobbyists. JURISDICTION From a Canadian perspective, the first legal question to be answered is which level of government has jurisdiction over uranium mines in general and specifically over aspects relating to the environmental effects, including the health and safety aspects, of uranium mines and

In 1992, United States mine production of barite decreased 8.5%. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 36.9% and imports decreased by 61.6% vs. 1991. World mine production decreased 1.5%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 11.9% according to the Bureau. The declared value, c.i.f. United States port, of all imported crude barite during 1992 decreased from $42.35/t ($38.42/st) in 1991 to $40.09/t ($36.37/st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 88% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 80% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Ten¬nessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1992. The average number of rotary rigs operating (717) was 16.6% less than the 1991 average of 860 in the United States. Crude barite imports were 518 kt (571,000 st), 61.6% less than in 1991. Imports accounted for 44.7% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States. During the year, China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the United States with 67.2% of total crude ore imports. India followed with 31 %, and others with 1.8%. INTRODUCTION The process of solid-liquid separation can be an important decision in plant design. It is very important that one must consider not only the most effective means of solids-liquid separation, but also to consider the effects on upstream and downstream processes. A solid-liquid separation is done either to remove the solids £ran the liquids as in copper concentrates or rave a liquid from the solids as in uranium operations. In either case, washing can be an important consideration to clean the solids or recover the liquids. This section will deal with solid- liquid separation other than thermal, sedimntation processes, or hydro cyclones. The three major areas discussed are pressure filters, vacuum filters, and centrifuges that are most cannon in the minerals industry. PRESSURE FILTERS Pressure filters are one common type of solid-liquid dewatering devices. There are my different types of pressure filters that are both continuous and batch operations. They are characterized by using an external pressure to push or force the slurry through porous media to force the liquids out of the solids. Whereas vacuum filters are limited to one amsphere or bar working pressure, some types of pressure filters operate as high as 16 bars pressure. Pressure filters are also effective for hot slurries where a high boiling point can be a problem or precipitation occurs under vacuum. The types of pressure filters most common in the mineral processing industry include plate and frame and recessed plate filters. Some of the new technologies including automatic pres- sure filters and belt presses are also discussed. Plate Frame Filters Plate and frame filters are one of the oldest and most effective means of both dewatering solids and clarifying liquids. Plate and frame filters consist of a skeleton that is used to hang or support alternate plates and frames that are pressed together to form chambers.
