In 2006, McNally International Inc., in a joint venture partner-ship with Aecon Constructors, was the successful bidder on two York Region Tunnel Projects: the Bathurst Collector/Langstaff Trunk Sewers and the York Durham Sewer System (YDSS) Interceptor Sewer 19th Avenue, both in the Toronto area. These projects comprised a total of 13 km (8 miles) of 2.74 m (9 ft) finished diameter tunnels and are both part of the YDSS. Both contracts required the use of earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) with a precast concrete segmental liner.

The El Sauzal deposit is a classic, high sulfidation, epithermal gold system located in the southwestern Chihuahua state of Mexico (Fig. 1). A Francisco Gold geologist discovered the prospect in1995. El Sauzal was encountered as a result of an extensive grassroots exploration program in the rugged, dissected volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, around the historical Batopilas silver camp. At El Sauzal, high grade gold is hosted within a series of more permeable, low-dipping, lithic and fine-grained dacitic rocks of early Tertiaryage. The mineralization appears tobe structurally and lithologically controlled. The alteration characteristics are typical of a high sulfidation system, including kaolinite, illite, alunite, dickite and pyrophyllite.

In March, the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) held its annual conference in Toronto, Ontario. This is the third PDAC meeting the author has attended. The following are some impressions of the meeting. And the author looks forward to the joint meeting of the PDAC and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum to be held March 5-10, 2000, entitled Mining Millennium 2000. One of the features of next year’s gathering is a proposed forum of world mining ministers, the first ever to be held anywhere.

The Standley Lake Dam Rehabilitation Project in Colorado included the complete replacement of the outlet works. This required two 1.8m (6 ft) diameter microtunneled wet lake taps, 380m and 186m (1246 ft and 636 ft) long, a permanent valve shaft 12.2m(40 ft) wide and 32m (105 ft) deep, and a 3.5m (11.5 ft) diameter (962 foot long) outlet tunnel driven with a roadheader. The tunnels were driven in low-strength, expansive, and slickensided claystone. The paper addresses the site investigation, shaft construction, roadheader performance, shotcrete placement, tunnel convergence, long distance microtunneling, and wet lake taps.

HIGH SPEED RAILWAY NETWORK Spain is a very adequate country to develop the high speed railway network thank to its geographical feature which has a 600km long radius, from Madrid- the capital that covers mostly the whole country. Therefore, the railway is a major competitor of the airline. In Spain, the new access to the north and northwest is nowadays the most important railway project which will allow a significant saving of time in the near future to the central plateau and the northern territories. Time savings as well as strict environmental considerations have been the main objective of various studies during the last decade leading to Guadarrama and Pajares tunnels as ones of the optimum solutions. Cordoba-Malaga high speed railway, the extension of the present Madrid—Sevilleline, through the Abdalajis range and the rail project to cross oriental Pyrenees between Spain and France are another two samples of large tunnels currently underway. In these four projects, the ground already encountered and to be soon encountered is highly variable, from very hard granite and gneiss in Guadarrama and Pertus to very poor argillite in Abdalajis, shale in Pajares and schist in Pertus. A number of faults are also expected. Hence, double shield hard rock TBM has been chosen. Figure 1 shows a general scheme in four projects. These four projects represent a total of 2 × 68 km of which 87 km are under DRAGADOS contracts. PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY DRAGADOS Guadarrama Tunnels This project is the longest twin tunnel with 28.377km, in Spain and considered one of the longest in Europe. The operating speed will be 300 km/h. This tunnel will link Madrid and the north territories through Guadarrama range. (Figure 2). The south portal is placed at el. 997.8m above the sea level. The tunnel starts with an inclination of 3‰, increasing until 15‰. After 6,620m length, the tunnel passes under the Morcuera ridge with an overburden of 960m. After 13,400m length, the elevation is 1,024m which is the highest point, and then the tunnel declines with a slope of 9.5‰, 2‰ and 19‰ until the north portal in Segovia province. Their suggestions on how to handle culture shock will be of interest to expatriate managers, operators, social workers, and engineering and construction personnel posted to overseas operations, as well as to nationals posted to other parts of their own country.

This paper discusses the challenges faced by the design team of the under-river crossings of electric transmission feeders in New York City, a densely populated urban area. The under-river crossing of a 345 kV feeder was initially designed as Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), but was redesigned as a utility tunnel because of site con¬straints on both sides of the river. Multiple studies addressed location, available tech-nologies and costs. Multiple soil investigation phases addressed design aspects of HDD, as well as tunneling. Contractual issues varied from a design build alternative with Geotechnical Data Report (GDR) to design tender approach with GDR & Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR).

According to the analysis of surface powered haulage accidents involving off-highway haul trucks in openpit mining, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), reported 1,300 fatal accidents from 1990 to 2005. Of these, 163 were considered off-highway truck haulage accidents, and at least 23 involved collisions of an off-highway truck with a neighboring vehicle or a worker on foot (Nieto and Dagdelen, 2006). In general, an average of 18 nonfatal accidents and three fatal accidents occurred in openpit mining per year when equipment backed over the edge of an embankment, stockpile or dump point (Fessak, et al., 2003). The specific problems that need to be solved can be determined by carefully studying the accidents involving haulage trucks (Marrara, et al., 2004). Solutions to haulage truck safety must consider the human factors affecting each task even when engineering solutions seem most appropriate. In surface haulage, human performance becomes a critical issue because of the unusual demand the vehicle?s places on their human operators: ? Roadways and working areas change frequently in mining operations. ? The sheer mass of mining equipment such as trucks requires control inputs (e.g., braking) far in advance of the desired action. ? Rough roads, loading and unloading impacts can subject the driver to dangerous shocks and vibration. ? Visibility is sharply curtailed by the bulk of the vehicle generating large blind spots. All of the above issues can be attributed partially to the lack of visibility (Pyles et al., 2003). Driver visibility and communications are key issues to reduce mining truck accidents. Analysis of fatalities and injuries involving mining equipment demonstrates the need to develop new intervention and control strategies to mitigate the risks associated with mining equipment operation. Ongoing development of these and other new strategies is required to achieve a reduction of injury in the mining industry

The behavior of gold in a conventional copper electrorefinery anode slimes treatment process is expounded on in this study. In the raw anode slimes generated in a copper electrorefinery, gold occurs mainly as tiny particles of metallic gold, which are commonly attached to selenide particles. Some gold is also present in selenide form. Decopperizing the anode slimes retains much of the metallic gold, but also promotes the incorporation of gold in the structure of silver-rich selenide species. A greater fraction of the gold is converted to (Ag,Au)2Se or Ag3AuSe2 when high-Se and high-Ag anode slimes are decopperized at elevated temperatures and pressures. After pelletization and roasting of the slimes, the gold is converted to a (Ag,Au)-alloy and Ag3AuSe2. Smelting of the roaster products eliminates the selenium and converts the gold to a silver-rich (Ag,Au,Pd)-alloy in the dore metal. In the subsequent silver electrorefining process, gold collects as a gold-rich (Au,Ag,Pd)-alloy in the gold mud. Dore smelting rejects many impurities as a silica slag; minor amounts of gold are present as a (Ag,Au,Pd)-alloy in the silica slag. This gold is recovered by flotation and is recycled to the dore furnace. Gold is identified in both the tellurium caustic leach residue and the parting plant wash water mud as tiny particles of metallic gold. These products are also recycled to the dore furnace to recover their gold values.

Whether drilling through tough clay or breaking rock, or facing the most severe conditions including mixed face ground, perched water and running and flowing sands, working under-ground certainly comes with no shortage of challenges. In an environment where the unknown is faced on a daily basis, tunneling contractors must be able to rely on their equipment to get the job done properly. Not only that, their equipment must comply with two of the highest priorities: safety and efficiency. In addition to being the number one concern, a proven safety record provides additional benefits to a company. A safe work environment serves as a key component to company growth, including the ability to remain competitive in bidding and maintaining higher-level, more challenging projects.

SAG mill liner development draws primarily on practical experience from SAG milling operations supported by computer-based modeling of charge motion in SAG mills and on established good design practice. Liner design needs to respond to the process aspects of mill liner action that are critical to good SAG mill performance, i.e., the impact of shell liners on the grinding action and of grates and pulp lifters on pulp discharge. In recent years, the trend in large SAG mills has been to use wide-spaced shell lifters with large lifter face angles, primarily to reduce packing and ball/liner damage, and to use larger, hence fewer, mill liner parts to reduce downtime at liner change-outs.

The 5-mile long Bay Tunnel is a major water supply facility to be constructed under the San Francisco Bay and adjacent marshlands between the San Andreas Fault to the west and the Hayward Fault to the east. The tunnel will have a two-pass lining system consisting of a watertight precast concrete segmental initial lining and a welded steel pipe final lining. Considering the Bay Tunnel?s location between two major active faults, the design earthquake produces a significant peak ground acceleration estimated at approximately 0.6g. To develop a design that can achieve the seismic performance objectives, full dynamic seismic analyses were performed using site-specific earthquake time histories. The analyses considered soil-structure interaction and an evaluation of the transverse and longitudinal effects of the design earthquake. This paper describes the seismic analyses and the design measures recommended to minimize potential adverse effects of the design earthquake on the tunnel final lining.

The exploitation of the underground is currently undergoing a major transformation process. Besides mining, alternative ways of utilization are playing an increasingly important role. These alternative utilizations include the storage of gases, the disposal of radioactive wastes and the implementation of geothermal storage facilities. In addition, more and more mining operations are being shut down, like the German hard coal mining industry in 2018. But the integrity of closed mines must be ensured in the post-mining phase.

The methodology used to obtain fly ash subsamples of different sizes is generally based on wet or dry sieving methods. However, the worth of such methods is not certain if the methodology applied is not mentioned in the analytical procedure. After performing a fly ash mechanical dry sieving, the authors compared those results with the ones obtained by laser diffraction on the same samples and found unacceptable discrepancies. A preliminary study of a wet sieving analysis carried out on an economizer fly ash sample showed that this method was more effective than the dry sieving. The importance of standardizing the way samples are handled, pretreated and presented to the instrument of analysis are suggested and interlaboratory reproducibility trials are needed to create a common standard methodology to obtain large amounts of fly ash size fraction subsamples.

In April 1984 a subsidence depression formed directly beneath a two-story frame residence, near Linton, IN, causing 2 ft of separation between the floor and walls, and damaging both the foundation and interior of the building. The Office of Surface Mining undertook the rehabilitation of the area under its emergency response program. This paper describes the investigation performed to determine the cause, severity, and extent of the problem. Abandoned mine workings were found approximately 55 to 60 ft below the house. Based on the findings, remedial measures were prescribed. An abatement program consisting of grouting the mine voids was recommended, and specifications prepared. These were implemented, and the area has been successfully stabilized.

Underground coal mining has been active within the East Mountain property since the mid 1950's. As a result, coal from two seams has been extracted within large areas allowing surface subsidence to occur. Monitoring of subsidence annually, began in 1981 using on the ground conventional monumentation, surveying and photogrammetric monitoring. The data collected has shown the time benefits of photogrammetry and the relationship between observed subsidence and the geometry of the mined out area below.

The Biwabik Iron Formation is a ~1.9 billion year-old sequence of iron-rich sedimentary rocks that was metamorphosed at its eastern- most extent by ~1.1 billion year-old intrusions of the Duluth Complex. The metamorphic recrystallization of iron-formation locally produced iron-rich amphiboles and other fibrous iron-silicate minerals. The presence of these minerals in iron-formation along the eastern part of what is known as the Mesabi Iron Range, and their potential liberation by iron mining has raised environmental health concerns. We describe here the geologic setting and mineralogic composition of the Biwabik Iron Formation in and adjacent to the contact metamorphic aureole of the Duluth Complex. The effects of metamorphism are most pronounced within a few kilometers of the contact, and decrease progressively away from it. The contact aureole has been divided into four metamorphic zones?each characterized by the composition and crystal structure of the metamorphic minerals it contains. The recrystallization of iron-formation to iron-rich amphibole minerals (grunerite and cummingtonite) and iron-pyroxene minerals (hedenbergite and ferrohypersthene) is best developed in zones that are most proximal to the Duluth Complex contact. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. INTRODUCTION AND SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES An area in the midwest overlying abandoned room-and-pillar mine workings at, shallow depth has been experiencing subsidence movements with associated damage to surface structures. Other coal companies in the area have also been having similar experience. A 16 - month cooperative study between a mining company and the Department of Mining Engineering at SIUC was developed with the following objectives. 1) Determine the extent to which surface and subsurface movements were complete in the area, 2) Identify the mechanism(s) of subsidence in the area, 3) Determine the influence of geology and hydrology of the area on subsidence movements, 4) Observe the conditions of abandoned underground workings with a borehole TV camera, 5) Characterize the extent of damage and monitor possible progressive damage to selected surface structures, and 6) Make recommendations to a) minimize further damage to surface structures in the area, b) identify future areas that may be affected by these movements and c) modify mining systems to minimize these movements.

The paper provides an overview of subsidence research which was done by the Sasol Company in South Africa over a period of more than six years. The magnitudes of subsidence elements in South Africa are largely similar to those in the U.S.A. and Australia, as opposed to Europe. The research resulted in a subsidence prediction method with a new approach to the prediction of ground strain. The paper also describes the effects of subsidence on various commonly occurring surface structures such as roads, overland conveyor belts, pipe lines and power pylons. It is concluded that while most structures are not specifically designed to accommodate mining induced displacements, they can nontheless be undermined safely and economically with only minor precautions.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating chemical and biological decontamination of complex wastewaters such as tailings pond water containing 280 ppm CN and 5 ppm Se as well as significant concentrations of arsenic, copper, iron, silver, and zinc. The most effective chemical procedure involves cyanide oxidation using hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochlorite followed by selenium reduction using ferrous hydroxide. The effluent contains ?1 ppm CN and 20 ppb Se; concentrations of other - major contaminants meet National Drinking Water Standards. Preliminary research indicates that biological cyanide oxidation is possible even in highly alkaline solutions (pH 10.5) containing high cyanide concentrations; indigenous bacteria destroyed 85% of the cyanide. Exploratory research shows that other bacteria removed up to 79% of the selenium from chemically oxidized, low- cyanide water. These promising results may lead to a final processing scheme that involves a combination of chemical and biological techniques.
