High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) was introduced to the mineral processing industries in the mid-SO's as a tool for comminuting raw and processed materials. This tool made its an impact in the Cement Industry where it was used as a pre-grinder on existing ball mills, raw and finish grinding in a mill circuit and other various applications. This concept was a big success where the cost of power was high along with the desire to increase capacity. The HPGR reduced the power requirement and increased the capacity in the ball mill due to the finished product produced by the HPGR and the micro fractures in the coarse rock, which reduces the power required to finish grind the rock. This unit has found acceptance in many other industries including diamonds, iron and other selective applications. The diamond industry uses this tool for selective grinding purposes since the kimberlite rock is considerably softer than the actual diamonds. Therefore within a bed of material, kimberlite is crushed to fines and the diamonds are liberated and unharmed. The iron industry primarily uses this tool for concentrate comminution; however, there are installations using this tool as a pebble crusher and in an AG-pebble mill circuit.

Mines are constantly trying to improve production processes by optimizing work cycles, reducing operational delays, minimizing costs, controlling equipment utilization, and preventing occupational hazards. Currently, advances in digital mining technologies within the concepts of 5G and Industrial Touch Internet are allowing better control and monitoring of underground mining equipment, with centralized control systems that unify data analysis for proper decision making. A wireless 5G-based platform for controlling and monitoring systems for underground mine operations can be designed over a comprehensive layout in where bandwidth selection, sensor location, Wi-Fi repeaters and power distribution are put together to build a successful supervisory system. In order to confirm the validation of these concepts, a case study is proposed for a medium-sized underground mine with a multi-level network which includes tablets managed by production supervisors, along with other data collection devices installed in semi-autonomous mining equipment, collecting, and distributing data in near-real time, with interconnection to support and services areas on the surface.

The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT), designed and constructed by Bouygues Civil Works Florida between 2009 and 2014, was a Public Private Partnership between the Miami Access Tunnel Concessionaire, Florida Department of Transport, Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami. The project comprises dual 11.3m internal diameter, 1.27km long, twin lane road tunnels running between Watson and Dodge islands under the main shipping channel in Biscayne Bay. Five cross passages (CPs), spaced at 200m centre to centre, provide emergency access between the two tunnels, as shown in Figure 1.The CPs were constructed by open-face excavation methods but the particular geological conditions at the project site (loose and variable carbonate sedimentary strata with very high permeability) required specific ground treatment solutions to provide safe excavation conditions and to ensure the long term serviceability of the permanent works construction. Where access allowed, ground treatment was performed from the ground surface using deep-mixing techniques; however, at two locations (CP2 and CP3) surface access was restricted and ground treatment by freezing, performed from the tunnels, was required. The CPs are 12.3m long with an excavation diameter of 5.8m and are located up to 30m below the water table partly or wholly within the Key Largo limestone (termed Layer S7 in the ground model). Layer S7 is a coralline limestone having a metastable honeycomb structure and high variable porosity. At CP2 the upper portion of the excavation was within the overlying Anastasia Formation limestone (Layer S6), comprising a highly permeable coquina. The geological profile along the project is shown in Figure 2.This paper presents aspects of the freeze design and the risk mitigation necessary to successfully achieve the construction of the CPs in the unique geological conditions."

The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) has been successfully applied to two very different tunneling projects in the U.S.. In the case of Pittsburgh's Mt. Lebanon Tunnels, two original design alternatives were prepared. The NATM alternative incorporating a reinforced shotcrete final lining was successfully bid and constructed. At Washington Metro's (WMATA) Section B-10 Glenmont Route, Wheaton Station and tunnels, a NATM value engineering redesign was prepared for the low bidder. The design incorporating a waterproofing system based on a PVC membrane between the initial and final linings was accepted by WMATA. In both cases, European experience and standards were meshed with U.S. standard practice. Examples of NATM flexibility as an original design and as a value engineering proposal are presented.

An interlaboratory testing program was undertaken in support of an ASTM standardization program for simultaneous combustion-infrared analysis for carbon and sulfur in ores and related materials. Statistical analysis results from the study are used to generate the within-laboratory and between-laboratory precision data needed for standardization of the methods. The interlaboratory precision statistics are also interpreted to estimate the uncertainty in calculation of net carbonate value classifications using a simplified quantitative risk analysis technique.

1.1 GENERALIZED METHODS OF SUPPRESSING THE INFLOW OF GROUND WATER DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHAFTS, DRIFTS AND TUNNELS Various methods are used to prevent or minimize the inflow of ground water into underground workings during their excavation. The two most common methods include freezing the saturated rock and grouting using cement, sodium silicate, polyurethane and/or other chemicals. Each of these technologies for combatting the inflow of ground water is effective only under specific hydrogeological conditions. For example, although the freezing of saturated ground is among the more universally adopted methods, it is designed to provide only temporary protection during construction. Before the saturated rock thaws it is necessary to emplace a waterproof liner which is labor intensive, time consuming, and expensive. Consequently, freezing is used only in exceptionally complex hydrogeological conditions, namely in those cases where the water-bearing strata consist of unstable rock or the ground water has an anomalous hydrochemistry. The classical grouting of saturated rock, carried out from the surface or from the face of the underground workings for the purpose of limiting the inflow of ground water during excavation, utilizes both cement and a variety of chemical grouts. Cement grouting has been regarded as the main method of combatting the inflow of ground water in fractured rock throughout the world. In such countries as the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Canada, the Republic of South Africa and Great Britain, cement grouting is the main method of reducing the inflow of ground water during the excavation of mine openings. In Great Britain and the FRG, cement grouting has been used in 80% of all shaft excavations. In the Republic of South Africa cement grouting has been used in almost 100% of all the shafts that have been constructed. The installation of grout curtains into permeable water- bearing strata significantly reduces their permeability and increases the rock strength. Grouting has the greatest effect in fractured sandstones, certain well indurated shales, fractured granites, fractured quartzites, and karstic limestones or dolomites. The following principal factors must be considered when assessing the expediency of grouting rock with cement: the geometry of the network of fracture openings, the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the fractured rock, the hydraulic head acting on the water in the rock, and the chemical composition of the ground water. On the basis of the geometry of the fractures and the thickness of each hydrostratigraphic unit, the characteristics of the cement grout are selected. As a rule, the cementing of large fractured zones with high ground water velocities is carried out using inert fillers (sand, mill slag, loam, loess, crushed limestone), special types of cement, setting accelerators, and high cement concentrations in water. Calcium chloride, soda ash, sodium silicate, sodium nitrate, amino alcohols, tin bichloride, trisulphate nitrate, and lumnite are used extensively as the setting accelerators for cement grouts. In the FRG and Poland, special cement injection compounds that embody a mixture of cement and active cement metal salts, water additives and binding substances are being used for the cementing of saturated zones with rapid ground water velocities. These reagents accelerate the rate of structure-forming reactions. In spite of the wide variety of additives used for cement grouts, the effectiveness of the method in large fractures below the water table is either poor or it leads to a very large consumption of cement due to the erosion of the grout through the cracks before it hardens. At the present time, a large number of cement types and brands are being produced by various countries. These variations permit cementing to be employed in a variety of geological conditions. However, both pure cement grout and grouts with fillers constitute unstable systems with a high water loss rate. Therefore during the grouting of finely fractured rock the cement grout's premature loss of a large amount of free water causes its consistency to increase, whereupon the grout solidifies. Consequently, it inadequately penetrates into the fine fractures of the stratum. In addition the high water loss rate in the cement grout causes unreacted cement particles to remain, which greatly reduces the grout hardness and the resulting rock strength characteristics are weakened. As a result, the binding properties of the cement are utilized perhaps up to 60%. The remaining portion is left in the grout as a filler. All these conditions significantly decrease the efficiency of the isolation effort both with respect to strength and cost. In order to expand the cement grouting method, re- search is being conducted to improve the quality of cement grout, to increase its range of application with respect to permeability control, to reduce its water loss rate and to increase its capacity to withstand the erosive and corrosive effects of poor quality ground water. The development of flotation machines since the first industrial use of the process can be divided into three stages. The first, up to about 1930, was marked by diversity in the means for contacting floatable mineral with the air/ water interface and for generating the interface, as well as in cell design. By 1927 Taggart (1) could list 170 patents covering flotation cells, and he mentioned dozens which were or had been in operation. He divided cells into eight categories according to design, type of separating interface, and where in the cell and how separation took place. These were: (1) Film or skin flotation with wet or dry oiling of surfaces; (2) pulp body process with bubbles generated chemically by pressure reduction, by vacuum or by boiling; (3) agitation-froth processes involving local supersaturation with air; (4) bubble column; (5) pneumatic; (6) cascade; (7) subaeration; and (8) combination and miscellaneous types and processes. Most widely used then were the agitation-froth, sub- aeration, pneumatic types. By 1943 a significant reduction in categories had occurred to the two main divisions of mechanical and pneumatic cells according to whether agitation and aeration were (a) by an impeller with or without compressed air, or (b) by compressed air alone. Cells at that time were still relatively small; the Morenci Concentrator completed in 1942 used 432 1.7m3 (60 cu ft) Fagergrens for roughing 45,000 and later up to 55,000 t/d.

"According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires in nine states. This is considered to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Many mine fires are started by people burning trash where the coal seam or an abandoned coal mine is close to the surface. Other fire ignition sources include lightning and forest fires. Once ignited, a coal mine fire can easily spread into the remaining coal pillars and mine entries. Once established, the fire creates its own ventilation system supporting further combustion by drawing air down into the workings through unsealed mine shafts, fractures and surface subsidence depressions. As the coal left in the workings from the past mining operations burns, the mine void can collapse, causing subsidence and creating dangerous voids, damaging overlying surface structures and roadways. The products of combustion include smoke and noxious fumes such as carbon monoxide gas. These products are released to the atmosphere through fractures that develop within the ground surface, killing vegetation and creating serious health hazards (Richmond, 2017).Abandoned mine fires, if left uncontrolled, can burn for years and, in fact, one of the most wellknown mine fires in the United States is the mine fire in the Borough of Centralia, PA, that began on May 27, 1962. Reportedly, officials decided to clean up the local landfill for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday by burning the garbage on the site. Unfortunately, the landfill was located on the site of an abandoned strip-pit mine on the edge of the Borough (Dekok, 2009). The strip pit had been left open after being excavated around 1935 and was approximately 23 m (75 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) deep. It is believed that the lack of a properly constructed noncombustible shale barrier in the strip pit enabled the fire to spread to adjacent carbonaceous refuse material and then to nearby coal mine workings (PA DEP, 2017). As time went on, the fire grew and spread under the Borough and directly affected the residents despite various efforts to extinguish the fire by the state and federal governments (Fig.1). In 1984, a voluntary program was begun to move residents from their homes. Many accepted buyout offers for their properties and moved elsewhere and after leaving, their homes were demolished. In 1992, the state used eminent domain to take control of all the property within the Borough. In 2013, after years of litigation, the eight remaining residents were allowed to stay for as long as they lived. Today, only a few buildings remain within the Borough (Centralia, PA, 2014). This fire has been burning for more than 55 years."

Engineers at the Freeman United Coal Min¬ing Company, located in West Frankfort, Illinois, have been using a computerized production planning and maintenance reporting system, which have been designed exclusively for underground coal mining. This paper will explain a dynamic graphical simulation and computerized time study system that has been used to design and evaluate underground production systems for optimizing productivity. Also with the aid of customized software, detailed records on changeable components of underground equipment, including the vendor's name, date installed, operating and maintenance hours, etc., have helped Management to select the best available components for their equipment. The MPASS System, Mine Performance Analysis Simulation System, developed through a cooperative agreement with Freeman United, Ketron Inc., and the U. S. Department of Energy utilizes new methods to analyze and design production systems in underground coal mines. The MPASS System is a menu-driven user oriented system of interactive computer programs, which form five major subsystems. The subsystems: 1. Simulation 2. Time Study 3. Mine Background Reports 4. "Upon completion, the Bátaapáti deep underground radioactive waste repository complex (National Radioactive Waste Repository - NRWR) will provide safe final disposal for low and medium-level radioactive waste from the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Hungary. The waste emplacement is in progress and one of the main concerns related to the development is ensuring a feasible plan is in place for permanent repository closure. Detailed hydrogeological observations and safety assessments revealed that the clay filled fault zones penetrated with the access tunnels play determinant role in the long-term confinement performance of NRWR, so they need to be plugged. Detailed mechanical analysis and numerical modelling of the tunnel constructed through a fault zone is presented here to gain a better understanding of the rock mass and rock support behavior. The effect of stress reflection is demonstrated and its consequences are described in detail. A recommendation is given for tunnel support design in such conditions. INTRODUCTION Crossing fault zones is a challenging task during tunnel construction and can lead to failure if not properly accounted for during design and construction. These failures are can be caused by high water inflow or stability loss of the rock mass surrounding of the tunnel (examples can be found in CEDD, 2015). The prediction of the magnitude and development of displacement has a considerable impact on issues during tunnel construction. Changes of rock mass stiffness or structure ahead of the face, to a great extent influencing stresses in the vicinity of the tunnel and thus deformations (Steindorfer, 1998). Further research with numerical simulations was carried out, and the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of displacement vector is presented in (Grossauer et al, 2005). The concern associated with crossing fault zones was considered during the design of the Bátaapáti deep underground radioactive waste repository complex (NRWR) in Hungary. In the case of NRWR project, the fault zones have an impact on maintaining the stability of the surrounding rock mass as well as the final sealing of the repository. As part of the final closure design, a complex numerical modelling program was completed to gain a better understanding of the mechanical behavior of the rock mass and the monitoring observations during construction. Even though the need for the presented study is closely related to the NRWR project, the results can be used in any project related to fault zone crossing. The methodology used to better understand the impact of crossing fault zones for the NRWR project is presented in this paper. First the project background is introduced including an overview of the underground facilities, the aim of the repository, and the construction experience gained from the first crossings of the fault zones. After that the in-situ and laboratory testing is summarized. The numerical modelling methodology is detailed in the next section. Not only the outcome of the model is presented, but the results are compared with the experience and observations made on site. Since a good agreement is found between the actual and the modelled behavior, the conclusions are based on the validated result. To fulfill the aim of the paper, the stress reflection concept is introduced to explain the mechanical behavior of the fault zone and the rock support; furthermore straightforward suggestions are made for rock support design."

Arsenic management practices at the Con Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories have evolved over the last fifty years of operations under changing regulatory, economic and technological conditions and incentives. As a result of a processing upset in the mine' s arsenic trioxide reclamation plant circuit in August 1988, arsenic levels in the mine' s tailings pond rose from 30 to over 100 mg V. At these arsenic levels, water treatment operations were unable to meet water licence discharge criteria and the mine itself was under risk of closure due to limited water storage capacity. Under these internal pressures, the mine initiated its own research initiatives designed to restore water treatment operations. The new process developed from the mine's research, utilized the mine's existing water treatment plant hardware but introduced a pretreatment step involving a discrete sludge recycle and removal system. In February 1989, water treatment operations resumed under the new process.

The Ship Canal Water Quality Project includes a 2.7-mile, 18-ft and 10-in internal-diameter tunnel that extends from Ballard to Wallingford, two popular neighborhoods in the West of Seattle. During the TBM Main drive a 12' × 12' boulder with variable strength up to 47,000psi was encountered resulting on signicant damages to the Cutter ead. The rst part of this paper describes the design and construction of an underground recess in front of the TBM to create a safe working environment for the TBM repairs. The second part describes an injection campaign performed to seal an unforeseen water inow appeared during the excavation of the 11 Avenue Diversion Structure.

To address the drawbacks of the conventional portland cement/fly ash (PC/FA)–based cementitious material currently used in practice to construct pumpable roof supports (PRSs), a novel cementitious material has been developed based on geopolymerization technology. The novel cementitious material is comprised of two pumpable grout streams: Stream 1 is a slurry composed of pozzolanic material and high-calcium additive and stream 2 is an alkaline solution comprised of a gelling agent. Biopolymer has been added to the second stream to provide ductility to the geopolymer cementitious material. In the laboratory scale, systematic experiments have been carried out to investigate the viscosity, setting time, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the new cementitious material and develop the right recipe for field applications. By collaborating with industry and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), full-scale PRSs have been constructed and tested. The results show that (1) the novel cementitious material based PRSs has much higher peak UCS and similar or higher residual strength than the conventional PC/FA-based PRSs; and (2) unlike the PC/FAbased cementitious material, the novel cementitious material shows good long-term durability with nocracking/disintegration when exposed to air.

The initial step in the pelletizing of iron ores is the production of green balls. The importance of this step cannot be overemphasized as the physical quality of the green balls has a very significant effect on the subsequent induration process, regardless of the type of the indurating equipment employed. The ability of the green balls to withstand the rigors of handling, distribution, compaction and drying will have an effect on the degree of success of any pelletizing operation. Many factors affect the physical quality of the green balls including the prior processing of the iron ore, the characteristics of the balling feed and the type and quality of the binder used (if any). When working on the development of a new project or studying an existing operation, it is often desirable to determine what effect variations in these factors will have on green ball quality. It is generally impractical to make these determinations on a commercial, or even pilot plant scale, especially when the number of variables to be studied is large. Because of this, many organizations have developed batch techniques for producing green balls to enable them to perform such investigations with a minimum of time and expense. The batch balling method is at best, only an approximation of commercial balling systems. Many practitioners employ the use of pre-formed seed pellets to initiate a batch run. Thus, the growth mechanism encountered in any experiment is essentially snowballing. Unless an instability is introduced into a balling test (such as an excessive initial feed rate or an unusual feed material characteristic) the growth mechanism of coalescence is not present to a significant extent nor is it desirable. In a continuous operation, both mechanisms are present and necessary to sustaining the system. The batch balling technique thus produces pellets in an idealized manner and cannot be used to directly predict commercial green ball qualities. A general relationship does exist however, and the procedure is fairly sensitive to variations in test parameters. Although many refinements to this technique have been introduced over the years, batch balling is still essentially an art and subject to "operator effect". Therefore, to assure consistant and reliable results, skilled technicians who carefully adhere to established practice must be utilized.

With the world’s ever-expanding push to expand technological capabilities, the need for specialized materials including rare earth elements has exploded. One source found in the USA is bastnaesite, a rare earth bearing fluorocarbonate mineral, currently mined at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. To increase production, it is essential to optimize existing processes and create new ones to better utilize current resources. Therefore, a US Department of Energy Critical Materials Institute sponsored research program was carried out at the Kroll Institute for Extractive Metallurgy to expand the fundamental understanding of the industrial bastnaesite concentrate leaching system. With the help of prior knowledge, thermodynamic calculations and design of experimentation based lab testing, a novel single-stage hydrochloric leach system was created to optimize the rare earth extraction from bastnaesite. Historically, the existing industrial process has utilized a two-stage leach system involving a high-temperature hydrochloric acid leach with liquid solid separations followed by a caustic crack stage of the leach residues. A series of single-stage leach experiments were run by reacting locked cycle flotation concentrates with hydrochloric acid to test common leaching parameters. The results of these patent pending single-stage tests have shown rare earth recoveries significantly higher than reported recoveries of historic two-stage caustic crack processes, all while decreasing the equipment required and the type and amount of reagents needed.

The restructuring of mining operations in Valea Jiului coal basin imposed by the transation to the market economy calls for an increased coal production. Under the circumstances, the role of drainage networks grows ever more important. The paper describes an original mathematical model and software developed on its basis, with enables the ventilation engineer to assess the configurations of different systems, as well as to test their reliability and prognose their future performance before conceiving another methane drainage system or changing the existing one. The paper also includes the underlying principles of an optimization program for methane drainage networks, which will enable the detection of the optimal methane drainage system, both from a technical and an economic point of view.

It was established as a subsidiary of union pacific corporation in 1971 with responsibility for coal, uranium, and industrial minerals. We participate in four coal mining operations and a uranium mine and mill all in Wyoming, and an aggregate and an abrasive operation in Utah.

Risk is a major factor in all mining activities, arising from many internal and external variables. The authors? research has resulted in a systematic method for the quantification of risk in mining projects (Park, 2012). This is the second part of a three-part series. The first part was published in the October 2013 issue of Minining Engineering magazine and can be found here at www.me.smenet.org. This paper discusses methods of assessing the overall risk associated with those variables, and presents a statistical model based on a survey of 31 experts. The third paper, to be publised at www.me.smenet.org on Oct. 14, presents an evaluation of the statistical model, using data from previous mining investment decisions in which the authors have been involved.

A field trial of by distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) technique was conducted at a longwall coal mine in Australia. This investigation was designed to assess the applicability of DOFS for microseismic monitoring in mining. The experiments used commercially available optic fiber cables, geophones and associated data acquisition instruments – a fiber interrogator and a seismic recorder. The fiber cable was deployed in a 300m deep hole and in trenches of approximately 3.5 km long on the ground surface around and across the longwall panel being mined. The results obtained from the experiments have shown that DOFS is able to acquire microseismic data with quality that is comparable to geophones. It has been proven that DOFS can achieve higher spatial resolution for seismicity sensing and higher accuracy for locating events than a geophone network. These characteristics are particularly useful for using DOFS to monitor ground vibrations associated with ground caving processes and rock fracturing events induced by mining and civil engineering. It was also found that far more additional seismic events were recorded by the fibers than by the geophones. Automated data discrimination and processing methods must be developed in order to utilize DOFS for real-time applications.
