The mining industry has waited a long time for the resurgence in commodity prices and demand for its products that it is now experiencing. Base and precious metals prices have reached levels not seen before. Coal prices have also shot up. And there are encouraging signs in the uranium market. China’s nearly out-of-control economic growth is said to be the leading driver for much of this resurgence. But demand for energy, metals and building materials in the United States and elsewhere are also major factors. The result is that expansions and new mines for nearly every commodity are in the works.

Increasing exploration costs and the need to reduce the time-frame from exploration to production presently demand formalized procedures to assist exploration planning and reserve analysis. Exploration planning is basically required to select the most cost-effective drilling/sampling program, and to flag the needs for data of greater relevance and reliability. Reserve analysis is necessary to determine the sensitivity of grade-tonnage relations, and to clarify the economic implications of mining when alternative technical choices are to be considered.

M.S. Azun I do not at all agree with the basic points of the author's conclusion. The use of lognormal or normal model to respond to the attribute distribution function should be carefully questioned. If fitting a distribution function of regionalized variables is the main purpose, one may employ one of certain well-known families of distributions, such as Tukey's lambda functions. For instance, the distribution function of gold assay values studied by Krige (Krige, 1978) may fit the lognormal model well, but one should not exclude that the basic idea of using the distribution function of observed data is to have insight of the physical mechanism that gives rise to the regionalized variables. In Applied Geostatistics, there are many examples considering only lognormal or normal model for the distribution function of geostatistical data even if the observed distribution function has more than one mode. Of course, using lognormal or normal model always brings easy computation for the statistical properties of attribute under investigation. Still, I object to adopting any of those models without having any "statistical inference." As seen from the author's paper, lognormal and normal model produce the same average grade (0.746% copper) and almost the same sample variance. Therefore, which model explains the probabilistic behavior of ore deposit is always an important question that should be replied by the geostatistician using not the common sense but the statistical and probabilistic methods. For kriging procedures, such as linear kriging, one should describe either second order stationary properties or bivariate properties of regionalized variables. Second order properties, such as correlogram function or semivariogram function, are the inputs of the so-called kriging equations. Selecting one of any useable models for the observed second order properties, such as spherical model, is not easy since the models are not based on the correlations structure of the regionalized variables. How those models being used in Applied Geostatistics can be distinguished is another important problem. One may develop many fitting models to respond to the observed second order properties of regionalized variables. However, I suggest that the model should be based on the probabilistic behavior of geologic process. The author used spherical model for copper, wolfram, and silver grades from isotropic sector (Fig. 2, 4, 3b) and exponential model for silver grades obtained along raises in isotropic sector (Fig. 3a). It seems that those semivariograms given in Fig. 3b for isotropic sector and Fig. 4 may be described by the random model implying that regionalized variables do belong to renewal process (Azun, 1983). If I knew the total number of data points used in estimation, I may prove that my conclusion is correct. Recalling the test for the first order sample correlogram value, the test procedure is introduced such that the independence is rejected if [ ] where Za/2 is the a/2 percentile of standard normal random variable and N is the total number of samples used in estimation (Azun, 1983). For the other observed semivariogram functions I suggest the author might try to use the so-called "Markovian model" describing not only the correlation structure of regionalized variables, but also the physical mechanism that produces the regionalized variables. The Markovian model for correlogram function is, [ ] The Markovian model for the other second order properties of ReV are also derived. T ve B, in the above equation, show, for example, structural change and mineralizational variation in a considered deposit, respectively (Azun, 1983). In selecting any model, it is not easy to search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. The Markovian model, based on a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables and respond to all properties. Random model and the so-called hole effect structure can be easily defined as a special form of the Markovian model (Azun, 1983). An estimation of any second order properties of regionalized variables may be computed through (N-1) lag. However, the dependency between the regionalized variables may be deemed to have "died out" after the so-called stationarity width (range). In practice, the estimation is carried out through 25% of the total number samples available. Therefore, the large fluctuations around the zero level and variance for correlogram or covariogram function and semi-variogram function, respectively, cannot be observed. Since the number of pairs involved in the estimation of higher second order properties is small, the estimation variance at those lags is large. There is no need to show higher order estimated second order properties. This study elucidates a new idea to predict mine fire levels by employing several machine learning techniques. A total of 120 patterns of various mine fire influencing parameters, such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and temperature, were compiled from the Adularya coal mine in Turkey. Techniques like t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) and k-means clustering were used to process the data, and support vector classification (SVC) was executed to predict various levels of the mine fire. The results revealed that the proposed model has higher credibility to predict the various levels of underground mine fires.

To minimize the carbon footprint in the industrial valourization of bauxite residue, hydrogen was used as a reducing agent. The current study experimentally investigated hydrogen reduction of bauxite residue-CaO sintered and self-hardened pellets at 1000 °C, along with magnetic separation of these reduced pellets for iron recovery. Calcium was introduced to bauxite residue to form leachable calcium aluminate phases with the existing alumina in bauxite residue. This involved the addition of either CaCO3 or a mixture of CaO and CaCO3 while maintaining the fixed Ca content during pelletization. The former underwent sintering at 1150 °C, while the latter was self-hardened through the cementing effect of CaO in exposure to moisture and air. Both types of pellets were reduced in a thermogravimetry furnace at an elevated temperature under similar conditions. The pellets were characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method and scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and their physical and mechanical properties were measured via standard techniques. During hydrogen reduction, a negligible amount of gehlenite ( Ca2Al2SiO7) was formed in the self-hardened pellets, while this phase dominated in the sintered pellets. Alumina in the bauxite residue converted to mayenite phases during reduction in both the pellet types; however, reduced self-hardened pellets had a higher amount of alumina containing mayenite leachable phase. The two pellets showed similar reduction behaviour, while different chemical, physical, and mechanical properties were observed. The magnetic properties of milled reduced pellets were examined through a Davis Tube magnetic separator in a wet environment under a constant magnetic field of 800 G. Higher iron recovery was observed for the self-hardened reduced (41%) pellets than for the sintered pellets (27%).

The long-term supply of nickel to society was assessed with theWORLD7 model for the global nickel cycle, using new estimates of nickel reserves and resources, indicating that the best estimate of the ultimately recoverable resources for nickel is in the range of 650–720 million ton. This is significantly larger than earlier estimates. The extractable amounts were stratified by extraction cost and ore grade in the model, making them extractable only after price increases and cost reductions. The model simulated extraction, supply, ore grades, and market prices. The assessment predicts future scarcity and supply problems after 2100 for nickel. The model reconstructs observed extraction, supply and market prices for the period 1850–2020, and is used to simulate development for the period 2020–2200. The quality of nickel ore has decreased significantly from 1850 to 2020 and will continue to do so in the future according to the simulated predictions from the WORLD7 model. For nickel, extraction rates are suggested to reach their maximum value in 2050, and that most primary nickel resources will have been exhausted by 2130. After 2100, the supply per capita for nickel will decline towards exhaustion if business-as-usual is continuing. This will be manifested as reduced supply and increased prices. The peak year can be delayed by a maximum of 100 years if recycling rates are improved significantly and long before scarcity is visible.

To solve the problem of large deformation of deep soft rock roadway, taking the soft rock roadway of no. 1 coal mine in New Shanghai as an engineering example, the deformation mechanism of surrounding rock of deep soft rock roadway is analyzed by combining theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field test, and the control countermeasures centering on deep and shallow dense drilling are put forward. Through theoretical derivation, based on the masonry beam theory, surrounding rock structure S-R stability principle and composite beam principle, the length, angle, and spacing of deep and shallow dense drilling are determined. Through numerical simulation, the deformation evolution process of soft rock roadway surrounding rock after dense drilling pressure relief is reproduced, and the influence of drilling parameters (drilling spacing, dip angle) on pressure relief effect is analyzed and compared. The field application test and monitoring verify that the deformation control measures of deep and shallow dense drilling broken roof surrounding rock have a good effect of large deformation control of soft rock roadway, and provide a new support means for the safety and stability control of soft rock roadway.

Nickeliferous laterites were characterized by particle size analysis, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Results showed that the laterites consist mainly of nickel-substituted lizardite with cobble-like morphology and traces amounts of magnetite and phlogopite. As fluoride ions can react with silicon in the lizardite crystal structure and form metal-fluoride complexes, as well as increase the equilibrium constant of the lizardite dissolution in acid solution dramatically, the addition of minor fluoride salts (0.2wt.% NaF) gave a markedly enhanced metal extraction rate (Ni 81.7% and Co 52.3%) under the experi-mental conditions of particle size d50= 25 µm, 10% (v/v) H2SO4, reaction time 2 h, reaction temperature 90°C, liquid-to-solid ratio 3 mL g-1 and stirring at 500 rpm compared with H2SO4 alone (Ni 69.6% and Co 30.8%).

Cobalt, nickel, and manganese can be recovered quickly, cleanly, and selectively from cobalt-rich manganese crust by leaching in dilute acid solutions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Common selective precipitation methods can then be used to recover these metals from the leach liquor. The leaching reaction produces only oxygen as a byproduct, and the waste residue from leaching was tested and found to be non-hazardous under existing EPA specifications. The leaching process is effective in either fresh water or seawater. This research is a part of the Bureau of Mines program to identify the mineral resources of the Exclusive Economic Zone and devise methods for recovering their valuable components.

Solution mining followed by solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) is one possible way to economically extract copper from ore bodies which cannot otherwise be profitably exploited. Published costs for the unit processes of SX and EW are out of date especially in view of the newer reagents now available and the newer circuit configurations, This paper updates the costs for SX-EW in 1985 dollars and also discusses some of the trade-offs which must be made when designing an SX-W plant.

A common problem during the operation of the Kaldo furnace is the formation of accretions and blockage of the injection lance due to splashing. This typically occurs during the processing of anodic slimes for the production of doré. In this work, a 1:7 scale model of the Kaldo furnace currently in operation at Metalúrgica de Cobre, Mexico, was built in transparent acrylic plastic. Water and colored oil were used to represent the doré and slag, respectively. The model was used to determine the maximum penetration distance of the injection lance under a variety of experimental conditions at room temperature. Input variables included two types of oil, rotation speed, inclination angle, and the fraction of the vessel volume occupied by the liquids (φ). A mathematical correlation for the dimensionless maximum penetration distance of the injection lance d ∗ as a function of φ, the Froude number of the liquids in the vessel (Fr), the Reynolds number of the gas jet (Re), and the oil-to-water kinematic viscosity ratio (η)was developed. Reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental values was obtained. Digital images showed that splashing was caused by the turbulent gas jet impinging upon the free surface of the liquids, whereas the cascade effect was negligible. The results of this work have been useful to improve the operation of an industrial Kaldo reactor.

The present work discusses the nuances of scaling and flow similarity to develop a 1/40th scale version of a longwall coal mine. Details on the geometric, kinematic, and dynamic scaling of the physical model are presented and discussed. This works also discusses using a 30% CO2 – 70% He gas mixture as a surrogate for methane. It also presents the implications of various Reynolds numbers (ranging from 7,000 to 140,000) and rotation of the shearer drums in the dynamic representation of the airflow and gas mixtures in the physical scaled model.

Tar sand deposits in the. Stare of Utah contain more than 25 billion barrels of in-place bitumen, Although thirty times smaller than the well-known Athabasca tar sands, Utah tar sands do represent a significant domestic energy resource comparable to the national crude oil reserves (31.3 billion barrels), The term "tar sand" refers to a consolidated mixture of bitumen and sand, Based upon a detailed analysis of the physical and chemical properties of both the bitumen and the sand, a hot-water extraction process for Utah tar sands is currently being developed in our laboratories at the University of Utah. This process involves intense agitation of the tar sand in a hot caustic solution and subsequent separation of the bitumen by a modified froth flotation technique., Experimental results indicated that, for a given tar sand sample, percent solids and caustic concentration were the two most important variables controlling the performance of the digestion stage, These variables were identified by means of an experimental, factorial design, in which coefficients of separation greater than 0.90 were realized. Although preliminary in nature, the experimental evidence gathered in this investigation seems to indicate that a hot-water extraction process for Utah tar sands would allow for the efficient utilization of this important energy resource.

The design of the predriven recovery room is not an easy task, because the stress distribution in the barrier pillar, standing supports, fender pillar and the immediate roof is changing as the longwall face approaches the predriven recovery room. An analytical approach is proposed to determine the stress distribution in the barrier pillars, fender pillars, standing supports and immediate roof of the recovery room based on the fracture mechanics approach. Based on the developed mathematical model, a stand-alone computer program has been developed to facilitate the required computations. The parameters such as overburden depth, recovery room width, mining height, shield and standing support capacities are incorporated into this program to access the feasibilities of predriven recovery room designs. Compared to the finite element method previously employed, this analytical approach offers the same, if not better, accuracy without requiring expensive computer hardware and software or specialized expertise.

Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation (CDE) is a precious metals mining company. The company's three mining operations are located In Nevada and Idaho. Collectively, these mines (Rochester in Nevada, and the Galena and Coeur In Idaho) produced about 61,000 ounces of gold and more than 7.5 million ounces of silver in 1991. The company is currently planning the development of two major properties; the Fachinal gold-silver project in Chile and the Kensington gold project near Juneau, Alaska. Fachinal and Kensington hold encouraging potential to significantly expand CDE's gold production during this decade. The permitting process for these two distinctly contrasting environmental settings, project design requirements and regulatory/political circumstances provide the basis for a comparative analysis of licensing and permitting requirements, timeliness of the permitting process and costs in the U.S. and Chile.

The presence of hard roof poses a significant threat to the safety of underground coal mining. In this study, a mechanical model is established for underground stopes to analyze the overburden structure with the advancing of the mining face. It is indicated that the load-bearing arch structure (LBAS) is formed above the stope for roofs with regular hardness, whereas the reversed-basin bearing structure (RBBS) is formed for hard roofs. Compared with the LBAS, the RBBS can induce an additional pressure at the foot of the bearing structure, and this effect becomes less as the distance between the hard roof and stope increases. The ultra-deep borehole hydro-fracturing technique (UHT) is proposed to weaken the hard roof for pressure release, and the associated equipment and procedures are also presented. The UHT is based on horizontal drilling along the axial direction of the roadway in the roof, and then the receding segmented hydraulic fracturing technique is used to achieve the purpose of fracturing (weakening) of the surrounding rocks. Field tests are carried out in 3022 roadway of Daliangwan coal mine in Yulin to assess the developed technique, equipment, and fracturing procedures. To evaluate the fracturing effect, deep borehole stress-meters are installed at different depths of the fractured and un-fractured zones of the roadway, along with hydraulic support pressure sensors placed at the mining face. The results show that compared with the un-fractured zone, the pressure on the wall and pillar sides is lower than that in the fractured zone, and the associated weighting duration and weighting area ratio of the fractured are reduced by 53.23% and 33.59%, respectively. This indicates that the presented UHT can provide a new solution for the prevention and control of mining disasters induced by hard roof failures in underground coal mining.

In a mineral processing plant there are a number of routine decisions which are based at least in part on the plant's metallurgical performance. Among these are those related to: 1) equipment functioning properly 2) suitable operating conditions 3) reagents achieving desired results 4} determining operating response to changes in ore 5) defining circuits offering potential for improvement A step beyond the routine, are the periodic management evaluations of operating supervision and technical assistance, which are based largely on profit -a direct function of are availability, metallurgical performance and operating costs. The "yardstick", excuse me -"meterstick", by which performance is best measured is the plant metallurgical balance, which tells not only what was produced but how it was produced. Since this metallurgical balance is directly related to both plant profits and individual rewards, it is only reasonable to make that "meterstick" as precise as humanly possible.

Today's highly publicized issues of resource development and environmental protection are not new. But recently these issues have been played one against the other, and some would have us believe they are mutually exclusive. Why? Because modern man has realized that the shortest route to achieving economic progress is to subdue nature. He extracts mineral resources from the earth to provide the raw materials upon which other processes and services are based. But often in his search for economic progress he finds that other highly- held values (e.g., an unspoiled environment) have been violated. The natural response is a counter action - to attempt to protect nature. But this response is basically unsatisfactory because it is reactive.
