Particulate matter (PM) is one of the main actors related to air pollution caused by surface mining. Fugitive dust, considered as particulate matter that cannot be collected by conventional measures, is classified by the particle size. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) categorizes PM as coarse and fine particles based on the particle size being less than 10 μm (PM10) and less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5). Basic operations of surface mining such as drilling and blasting, loading, haulage, and processing are processes that can potentially generate fugitive dust. Regulations and legislations enforce the mining industry to use environmental monitoring systems, fugitive dust level measured by PM10 level as part of this. Air quality monitors are positioned at different locations around surface coal mines and track air quality levels during production. This study introduces a data-driven methodology to handle air quality issues related to fugitive dust at surface coal mines. Data is sourced from different mine equipment in real-time and they are integrated with air quality monitoring systems to provide information to support decisions for fugitive dust. The method is implemented and demonstrated in a case study at a large surface coal mine.

Uranium has been mined in Namibia since the 1970s. The worldwide increasing need for energy in the early 2000s has led to the development and opening of a second uranium mine in 2007 and has triggered an increased interest in uranium exploration, often referred to as “the Namibian Uranium Rush.” In all, four mining licenses have been granted by the Namibian Government, which currently has two mines in operation, a third undertaking trial mining and the fourth in project finance negotiations. In addition, highly intensive prospecting activities at additional deposits are at an advanced stage. The finalization of the strategic environmental impact assessment (SEA) on uranium mining in 2010, the first of its kind and scale in the world, has enabled the Namibian government to assess this uranium rush and its tremendous legal, socioeconomic and environmental impacts and to prepare for the different future scenarios conceivable when this article was written in 2011, including both a skyrocketing and a complete breakdown of demand scenario. The Fukushima disaster and plans of the Namibian government to significantly increase royalties and company taxes in 2011 have threatened the market situation, forcing investors to reevaluate Namibian uranium mining projects. However, with the tax and royalty increase initiative since withdrawn, most projects are back on track at this point in time.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has tried many regional and laboratory efforts to develop measurement and monitoring techniques using environmental remote sensing technologies. In 1997, the agency established the Advanced Measurement Initiative (AMI): This is a eadquarters-level program, operating under the auspices of the EPA Office of Research and Development. The program is one result of the April 30,1996 White House Conference on Advanced Monitoring of the Environment. The EPA was encouraged to work with other federal agencies to leverage its remote sensing capabilities and use them to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and flexibility of environmental measurement and monitoring for regulatory compliance and reinvention. During the fall of 1996, the EPA and the Department of Energy developed an interagency effort to broaden the use of governmental technologies for environmental measurement and monitoring. In addition, the EPA and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducted joint workshops on the use of NASA remote sensing and other technologies for water quality and pollution applications. In the meantime, the EPA proceeded with an industry-proposed workshop to explore ways to cooperatively examine new research and to develop commercial remote sensing systems. It also examined how these systems might become accepted by the EPA in the regulatory and compliance processes. In particular, industry was interested in where new remote sensing capabilities might fit in with EPA's efforts at regulatory reinvention. Historically, the mining and petroleum industries have been reluctant to experiment with or use environmental remote sensing. They were concerned with the unknown liability from potential discovery of previously unknown environmental problems. Moreover, resource industries have been reluctant to use remote sensing for environmental applications where the EPA did not accept such data or information as part of the compliance process. Acceptance by the EPA of these advanced measurement and monitoring technologies (AMMT) will be a major reason for industry's increasedd use of remote sensing in environmental "applications for regulatory compliance. In July 1997, the EPA Office of Research and Development hosted at the Colorado School of Mines a stakeholders workshop on the AMI program and industry-government collaboration. The workshop's aim was to demonstrate the usefulness of AMMT technologies for environmental applications. Stakeholders included the mining and petroleum industries; environmental services companies; state environmental agencies and local governments; remote-sensing, value-added companies and data suppliers. The workshop used specific technologies and applications as a way to develop collaborative demonstration projects for several AMMT technologies covering different environmental problems. The workshop focused on the use of highly sensitive hyperspectral (very narrow spectral bands), geographic information systems and surface mapping to identify active acid-producing mine dumps and wastes from benign wastes at Leadville, CO. NASA's advance infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) was the instrument used. It was developed at California Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The EPA, the US Bureau of Land Managment (BLM), the US Geological Survey and several environmental service contractors sponsored the overflight and data evaluation. The AVIRIS study demonstrated reliability (95% correct surface mineral identification) and cost-effectiveness of this technology to accurately map and discriminate active acid-producing mine wastes from benign wastes. It could also predict which streams would be effected by acid and toxic mineral drainage. The BLM'said that the AVIRIS overflight could save it $500,000 a year in surface sampling costs at Leadville. This paper explores the application of the Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) as a structured approach to evaluate and prioritize innovation projects based on various criteria such as safety, cost, environmental impact, and social acceptability. By assigning weights and quantifying criteria, MCDA enhances decision-making transparency and objectivity. This study aims to show a method that facilitates strategic thinking, resource optimization, and stakeholder engagement, ensuring that selected innovations align with the company’s long-term objectives and commitment to responsible mining practices.

Rapid growth and acceptance of engineered materials have changed the way we live. We have come to expect improved performance at less cost. At the same time, our awareness of societal and environmental issues created by these materials during and after their lifetime has been heightened. As a result, material lifecycle analysis is receiving considerable attention. Material lifecycle analysis evaluates the cost/effective tradeoffs at each stage of a material's life: feedstock, fabrication, performance, recycle, and disposal. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigates a material's lifecycle using technical cost models augmented with decision and impact analyses. Results of these studies are useful in gaining a better understanding of current material selections and illustrating the multifaceted issues associated with engineered materials in today's society.

"Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-environmental liabilities forcing us to ask how much more of this mining can our planet support. It is clear that the future of mining differs from mining in the future. The laws of nature are being compromised by mining. This paper studies the problems at the core of the mining business which need to be addressed. What kind of mining will serve our existence with nature on this planet? What kind of mining perspectives are we able to formulate without having negative effects for future generations? Is mining technologically sustainable? The values of predictions, imagination, and creativity must be integrated to define what mining should be. Those values should be in the technologies necessary to restoring equilibrium of nature (Geomimic) as well as in complete extraction of metals, better utilization of the mineral reserves, and design the usage of metals to recycle. The purpose of this research is to examine many views and perspectives for future generations and to accelerate the pace of innovation of having mining without socio-environmental liabilities by design and by understanding nature. INTRODUCTION The future of mining is being stifled by many antiquated and stagnant attitudes and policies by the industry and society as a whole. The time is now or never for real action and education against these attitudes and to upgrade them to meet the current needs of this planet if we are to survive. Doing this will prove that we understand and respect nature for us and our posterity. It will also show a positive assessment that the mining process can be reversed before the point of no return. And that is to say, only if reversibility is still an option. It may not be anymore but it’s worth a try. We need to use our imagination and engineering know-how to come up with new proposals to change the core of mining. It would entail re-engineering. There is a profound difference between the future of mining and mining in the future. The future of mining is the continuation and persistence of past practices in the industry and expecting new results. Mining in the future requires a paradigm shift for extraction through modern thinking about mining as it pertains nature. The new paradigm for mining in the future would restore equilibrium with nature. Always keep in mind the connection of mining to nature. What is the future of nature? To predict mining in the future we need to use past experiences in mining and our knowledge of modern science and engineering to formulate a prototype that will enhance mining while maintaining equilibrium with nature. Mining and protecting nature are not mutually exclusive. This new prototype has nothing to do with the level of bonding or insurance that the mining industry can legally provide. The goal of this paper is to contribute some new ideas to help transform the mining industry based on the laws of nature and its limitations. Using this new prototype we will develop the following 1. Mineral exploration has evolved into a sophisticated science which uses powerful scientific tools to make mineral discoveries. In addition to their usefulness in performing mineral exploration, these scientific tools can assist the exploration geologist in assessing environmental conditions at exploration sites. During exploration, environmental data acquisition should focus on data collection efforts which can be easily integrated into exploration activities, and should provide information needed for pre-feasibility and preliminary engineering design studies. Environmental studies performed during exploration should also include an environmental liabilities audit and a fatal flaw analysis to assess whether there are any unresolvable environmental or regulatory issues affecting the project. Performing extensive environmental baseline studies during exploration and project evaluation is neither necessary nor recommended. This paper describes opportunities to integrate environmental data collection with mineral exploration activities. This paper also examines how political and communication issues can affect the outcome of permitting efforts, and recommends a strategy to improve the industry's ability to respond to political challenges and to communicate with the public. This strategy integrates technical and political issues, and implements programs to convince the public of the mining industry's technological achievements and its commitment to resource stewardship and environmental protection.

The semi-variogram, the basic tool of geostatistical estimation procedures, must itself be estimated from the available data. From a numerically simulated two dimensional deposit, with known variability expressed through its semi-variogram, the standard arithmetic mean estimator is used to calculate experimental semi-variograms. These are determined on a series of data sets obtained from the deposit with various sampling grids which cover different areas of the deposit and which have a wide range of available data. The orders of discrepancies between estimated and theoretical semi-variograms are determined in this idealized situation; and this provides a basis against which to assess experimental semi- variograms made on field data.

Installation of UP& Is monitoring system was planned to be completed in three stages: Environmental Monitoring, ConveyorBelt Interface, and Power Distribution Interface. With Phases 1 and 2 completed and Phase 3 initiated, massive amounts of valuable information have been obtained. From this information, many benefits where recognized and the decision was made to expand the system. This provided monitoring and control capabilities in a variety of new applications from ventilation fan and pump interface to innovative installations such as ground control monitoring. All current uses as well as future plans for expansion and data manipulation will be discussed.

Large-scale coal mining will cause environmental problems such as aquifer damage, land excavation and occupation, soil erosion, vegetation damage, and regional landscape damage. The existing coal mine environmental restoration technology is relatively simple, and there is a lack of systematic research on environmental total factors. Based on the mechanism of coal mining damage and the laws of environmental natural succession, the concept of “coal environmental protection mining” is proposed, which combines damage reduction mining and environmental element system restoration. In accordance with the environmental protection principle of “source protection, process damage reduction, and systematic restoration,” a technical system of “coal environmental protection mining” is constructed for the two types of mining damage scenarios: underground mining and open-pit mining. In view of the damage characteristics of underground mining, source environmental protection technology based on optimization of mining process parameters, stability maintenance and damage reduction technology for overlying rock bearing arch shell structure, zoning and time-sharing treatment of surface cracks, and direct drainage irrigation technology for mine water have developed. In accordance with the damage characteristics caused by open-pit mining, land-saving and source reduction damage technology, near-natural stratigraphic reconstruction, topsoil improvement, and environmental storage and utilization technologies for seasonal precipitation have developed. By applying the technology in this paper, the maximum surface settlement value of 12401 working face in Shangwan coal mine was relatively reduced by 25%, the surface cracks have been adjusted from step-type cracks to dynamic small cracks, and since the technical implementation of the Shendong mining area in 2010, the vegetation coverage has increased loss and crushing decreased by 0.06 km2 every year, the environmental restoration period of the dump site was advanced by more than one year, and the vegetation coverage rate increased by 41.78% compared with the background value in the semi-arid area of the victory open-pit coal mine demonstration area. A surface reservoir with a water storage capacity of 400,000 cubic meters has been built, and the seasonal and graded utilization of mine water has been realized. An underground reservoir with a water storage capacity of 1.22 million square meters has been built in the Baorixiler open-pit coal mine.

Marco Polo reported that the Chinese used "black rocks" for fuel, and recent studies indicate that the Chinese may have used coal in small amounts for two or three millennia previously. The use of coal as a major source of energy however, did not begin until about the twelfth century, when the inhabitants of the northeast coast of England discovered that certain black rocks found along the seashore--and thereafter known as "sea soles" would burn. Since this initial discovery, coal has been mined continuously, first in England and shortly thereafter in present Belgium, France, and Western Germany, and finally in all coal-bearing areas of the world, in ever increasing amounts. The production of coal in the United States began about 1820, when 14 tons were reportedly mined. Since that time the production of coal increased steadily until about 1907, after which the rate has fluctuated between the extremes of about 400 and 700 million tons per year. Bituminous coal and lignite production was 590 million tons in 1974. Value of production was $8. 9 billion. Anthracite production was b.3 million tons with a value of $157.5 million.

Creation of needed new resources will be accomplished mainly by imaginative and diligent geologic exploration because geologic availability is the key determinant of future mineral supply. Adequate resources of most commodities can be made available for the rest of this century and beyond if they are discovered. Thus conversion of hypothetical and speculative resources into available reserves will provide the principal challenge to earth scientists. Additional problems now compete for our attention. First is a challenge to discover more resources than have been found to date for domestic needs as world-wide demands increase exponentially and as easily found high-grade deposits are rapidly being depleted. New ways to find new types of deposits are required. Second, the United States, a resource importer, increasingly is challenged for access to foreign supplies through stiffening competition and economic or expropriation sanctions. Balancing needs for mineral supply and environmental protection is a third challenge. Geologic explorers must consider statutory as well as economic and technologic requirements, controlled access to public and private lands, competition with urban sprawl or wilderness, limitations on discovery, appraisal and mining methods, and restoration of mined areas. Finally, is the challenge to temper public and private attitudes and assure that decisions bearing on resource problems are based on comprehensive credible facts. While striving to maintain and improve the standard of living, many Americans appear to disdain and mistrust those organizations that provide their material where-withal. Meeting these challenges effectively, and in time, will require careful appraisal of the resource system and the joint efforts of industry, university, and government earth science research.

When assessing the safety of a tailings dam, the constant weight method (CWM) is one of the most commonly used methods. However, when the evaluation indicator value suggests serious defects, the evaluation value is often inconsistent with the actual situation. To address this issue, the variable weight method (VWM) is introduced to assess the safety of the tailings dam. Initially, a three-layer indicator system for dam failure safety assessment is built, and individual indicator values are divided into four grades. Then, an appropriate state variable weight function is constructed and relevant parameters are determined. Finally, a case study is illustrated to verify the effectiveness of the model. The assessment results of the VWM more closely represent the actual situation than that of the CWM, which is more helpful for decision makers and technicians to take scientific and reasonable precautionary measures, thereby improving the safety management of the tailings pond.

Critical to successful dump and heap leaching for gold, silver, copper and uranium are factors such as permeability, solution delivery to the ore, and solution recovery. This paper deals with possible techniques for successful accomplishment of these three factors. New developments as well as older techniques are discussed, together with rationale for use of some techniques in reference to others. The authors hope to present a checklist so that the ideal application to individual mine situations can be achieved. This involves a discussion of the merits of each different method and the situations for most logical application. It is hoped that such discussion will broaden the geographic areas where dump and heap leaching can be applied to include greater winter cold and tropical regions of large amounts of rainfall.

When most people think of coal mining, they envision men in soot-covered clothes and hard hats digging at deposits in deep underground caverns. These mental images commonly include coal cars rumbling on rails as they emerge from the earth, filled to the brim with rocky ore. The world of modern, longwall coal mining is a far different place. Yes, it?s underground, the miners still wear hard hats and the environment is filled with soot. However, today?s mining operations are carefully monitored and the entire process is highly automated. Five kilometers (3 miles) underground, a sophisticated, high-powered mining machine moves steadily through a 2-m (6-ft) high tunnel at an average speed of 3.2 km/h (2 mph), carving out coal, then conveying it to a crusher and carrying it to the surface. Instead of digging out the ore, a longwall mining system slices it from the exposed tunnel face, using giant rotating shears. The shorn coal tumbles onto a conveyer below the shears and is conveyed to the stageloader, where it is crushed and dumped onto the main conveyer belt that eventually hauls it out of the mine. Integral to the longwall shear and conveyor is a moving metal roof that protects it from the thousand plus feet of ground above. The ceiling panels automatically advance above the shears, powered by hydraulic roof supports that stand on the other side of the tunnel, moving in a slow, sideways lock-step with the shears. This complex and massive machine makes longwall mining the most ef?cient and productive method for excavating coal. In fact, it produces 2.7 kt to 22.6 kt (3,000 to 25,000 st) of ore per shift, versus 544 to 907 st (600 to 1,000 st) for the conventional room-and-pillar mining. Using that method, miners develop one section of a mine at a time after carving out load-bearing columns of coal to support the roof above their heads. Longwall mining also is considered safer than the room-and-pillar method, largely because the process is mostly automated, requiring fewer workers. Still, longwall mining has its drawbacks: The equipment is expensive and the mining conditions are harsh. An entire longwall system can cost between $50 million and $100 million, while the electrical controls used to operate it can cost an additional $1 million to $2 million. These investments grind away all day, every day, in hot tunnels filled with coal dust.

Centrifugal modeling was used to evaluate reclamation schemes of; (a) flocculants, (b) sand/clay mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (d) capping with sand or sand/clay mix. Results suggest the hierarchy of effectiveness is: (d) capping, (b) s/c mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (a) flocculants. Comparisions between currently used large strain consolidation computer programs reveal no difference between piecewise linear or finite strain calculations. Correlations between numerical and centrifugal model predictions reveal excellent agreement on magnitudes; however, rate predictions require improvement in laboratory input data and centrifugal scaling relationships.

This paper discusses the subject of "Improving Contracting Methods" from the owners point of view, particularly the public. An overview is given of the work of the U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and some apparent results of the implementation of these recommendations or lack thereof. Selected recommendations that are not being implemented are discussed as to the the desirability and the possible impact of their implementation. Impediments to acceptance of the recommendations are identified and solutions proposed. The difference in the flexibility, attitudes and approaches of owners, public, quasi-public and private, toward improving contracting methods are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the fact that the onus to improve is on the owner because they usually develop the contractual language or at least have the final decision on its content and are or should be an equal party to the contract during its administration.

To investigate how deformation failure occurs in roadways surrounding rock, the relationship between cohesion and plastic shear strain of the strain softening model and the equation for calculating the shear strain of a rock mass in the ultimate elastic state are derived. On this basis, the equality relationship between the built-in maximum shear strain increment and cohesion of FLAC 3D was established to give a more intuitive picture of how the cohesion of the roadway surrounding rock changes. The cohesion attenuation and deformation of the surrounding rock are analysed. The results show that significant deformation in the roadway surrounding rock was caused primarily by the development of large areas of highly softened plastic rock masses towards residual strength. Taking the floor overhead-mining roadway under different rock pillar thicknesses (RPTs) in the Xinglongzhuang Coal Mine as an example, the results demonstrate that investigating the cohesion distribution inside the roadway during mining operation can provide a more intuitive, more accurate description of the degree of failure of the surrounding rock at any point of the roadway, as well as the overall failure range of the surrounding rock. The simulation agrees well with the field monitoring result and seems to be more practically useful than simply analysing the coverage of shear plastic zones. Based on the failure range and degree of roadway surrounding rock with different RPTs, three support schemes are designed. Classified support was implemented for roadways under different RPTs, which realizes the effective control of roadway surrounding rock.

Adequate planning for the development, operation, and reclamation of a surface mine requires attention to present and future uses of land, both on the mine site and in the mine vicinity. This paper outlines land use implications of surface mining, and suggests procedures that could link mine planning, mine operation, and reclamation to more general land use concerns. Mining is viewed as a temporary use of land that may irretrievably commit land resources away from some future activities, but may allow other uses, some of which may have been impossible without mining. The paper accepts the premise that surface mining should attempt to minimize environ-mental damage and to maximize future alternative uses of land by appropriate reclamation. I. Conversion to trolley assist is a means of minimizing diesel fuel consumption, which in many mining situations offers a rapid payback of capital investment plus the inherent flexibility and maneuverability of truck shovel operation. When diesel electric truck shovel mining operation with trolley assist is compared to alternative mining methods such as conveyor systems, the trolley assist system can be easily justified in terms of return on investment, payback and increased productivity. A review of present technology, performance requirements and past experience in the mining industry has led to the development of a trolley assist system for diesel electric haulage trucks which, is proven in the mining environment, offers significant reduction in fuel consumption and increased productivity.
