A kinetic model for batch leaching of various metals with different lixiviants has been developed. Overall material balances for reactants and products at the solid/liquid interface were formulated with various types of heterogeneous reactions in place at the interface. The solutions to these mass balances have been identified analytically as well as numerically using a Runge-Kutta method. Applications of these numerical solutions to various leaching systems using the rotating disc or powders have been discussed. Examples of the metal dissolution systems considered in this study include cobalt, nickel, copper and gold in acid, cyanide or ammoniacal solutions.

The design of separation circuits can be a complex, labor-intensive and costly process. While the engineer?s experience along with extensive data sets and simulation are crucial tools for determining the final solution, a more fundamental approach is suitable to compare preliminary options and reduce the number of potential alternatives. In light of this need, the authors have developed the Circuit Analysis Reduction Tool (CART?). This software package relies on the fundamental principles of linear circuit analysis; however, the solution methodology has been streamlined to automatically incorporate stream splitting and unique separation performance for each unit. The resulting tool allows preliminary analysis of circuit designs without the need of detailed feed characterization. In addition to the basic analytical approach, this paper supports the veracity of the methodology with several simulated examples for various separation models.

In recent years, the diminishing supply of natural gas has led energy suppliers and consumers to consider making synthetic natural gas from coal. A number of processes have been devised to produce gas from coal; many of these have been operated at the pilot stage and some have been operated commercially. Each process has specific coal feed stock requirements with respect to size consist and moisture content. The purpose of this presentation is to compare the estimated costs for coal handling, live storage, size reduction and drying facilities that would be required for delivery of coal feedstock to different gasification processes.

Introduction The researchers combine a detailed microanalysis of accident data and roof bolting field observations to develop new and meaningful risk indices for the roof bolter job classification. These indices incorporate information that has not been used in traditional measures of risk. The significant parameters that these new indices incorporate are the total number of accidents occurring within a particular work activity, the amount of time a miner usually spends performing the work activities in which the accidents occurred, and the average severity of the injuries incurred in the accidents. Being specific for a particular job, they aid comparisons among work tasks performed in the bolting cycle. The indices' specificity provide anew basis for reexamination of training and operational development of miners for specific jobs. Microanalysis The roof bolting microanalysis was performed by examining the empirical data and written summaries for all bolting accidents reported in the West Virginia Safety Information System (WVSIS) for the years 1983-1987. The WVSIS database contained more than 15,000 accident narratives. The microanalysis of bolting accidents covered 2083 reported personal injuries (RPIs). This large number of injuries, performed at an industry-wide level, provides a broad picture of the nature of roof bolting injuries. The analysis focuses on the activities associated with the cyclical routines of the roof bolting process. For this analysis, roof bolting tasks were categorized into work routines based on the sequence of work activities performed by roof bolters. Four work routines were identified within the overall bolting cycle. And these routines comprised 70% (1217) of all roof bolting accidents at the face. The routines include: face area preparation; tramming, positioning and setting the automated temporary roof support (ATRS); drilling holes; and installing bolts. The types of injuries most common within a routine and the average severity of those RPIs were also identified. Table 1 gives a breakdown of the percentage of accidents by the bolting routines. Another 19% of the roof bolting RPIs cannot be classified in a particular routine because of the vagueness of the narratives. However, it was clear that these accidents involved drilling holes or installing bolts. These results are consistent with previous research. It identified drilling and bolting, followed by tramming, as the most frequent sources of injuries (Helander, Krohn & Curtain, 1983). The RPIs incurred by classified roof bolters occurred largely on working sections (95%) and at the face area on the working section (75%). Approximately 23% of the 1706 roof bolter RPIs occurred during tasks which were not part of the bolting cycle. These included belt utility work, providing supplies and section moves. Miners in other job classifications who were involved in roof bolting accidents accounted for the remaining 18% of the 2083 roof bolting RPIs. Among this group were section utility men and general laborers (41%), section machine operators (38%), and electricians and mechanics (11%). Another 9% were performing on-section supervisory functions. Face area preparation Face area preparation work led to a substantial number of injuries, although it accounted for the lowest number of injuries of the four routines. Several tasks were associated with the injuries incurred in this routine. Table 2 shows the percentage of injuries associated with face area preparation. Handling materials often led to overexertion injuries. Nearly 66% of the scaling-related injuries and about 33% of the injuries incurred during the setting of temporary supports involved 'strikes' by equipment, materials, top and rib. Tramming, positioning and setting the ATRS During tramming operations, workers were often struck by components of the machine and hit by loose roof and rib. Poor footing also led to slips, sometimes against the moving machinery. Table 3 gives a breakdown of accidents in this routine. Control levers were a significant problem in this routine.

A detailed investigation of the stability in cyanide solutions of native gold and gold-silver tellurides in a flotation concentrate from the Golden Mile, Kalgoorlie, has been undertaken to assess whether leaching under different conditions can be used to quantify the distribution of Au between native gold and gold-silver tellurides, as suggested by, for example, Chryssoulis and Cabri (1990). The leaching was carried out on +20 µm native gold and gold-silver tellurides separated from a high-grade flotation concentrate and then diluted with barren quartz. The material leached assayed 270 ppm Au and 118 ppm Te and the leach conditions used were:- Stage 1: Leaching in dilute cyanide (0 .1 % ) at pH 9 .5 for 24 hours to dissolve native gold but not gold-silver tel­lurides. Stage 2: Leaching the residue from Stage 1 in strong cyanide (2%) and pH 12.5 for 96 hours to dissolve gold-silver tellurides.

Adequate ventilation of coal mine working faces is the most important technique for controlling respirable dust and methane. Choosing the right technique presents some tough questions. US Bureau of Mines research has shown that to control respirable dust, you must contain the dust near the face, keeping rollback (turbulence) to a minimum. For methane, the most effective approach has been to use a blowing brattice, or tubing, and to create turbulence and disperse the face methane, allowing it to pass over the machine and into the return. It is immediately apparent that the two approaches may counteract one another, thus complicating the decision as to which system may be best for a given situation. At present. Bureau research has developed two successful machine-mounted face ventilation systems to meet these different needs and allow deeper cutting. The fan- powered dust scrubber is designed to control dust primarily associated with blowing face ventilation systems. The spray- fan controls methane on exhaust-ventilated sections.

After OSHA published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on August 5, 1983, to revise its standards for Underground Construction, many contractors and their representative associations became concerned by the sweeping changes in the proposed rule. After reviewing all of the evidence and testimony on file with OSHA, the contractors presented extensive written and oral testimony to the Department of Labor in Washington, D. C. to help insure that the final published rule would be effective without jeopardizing the economic viability of the industry. The results of those efforts, the entire OSHA rulemaking process, and the opportunity for the construction industry to participate in that process will be discussed.

A number of authors have examined particular facets of the problem and have proposed models for their area of interest. Bureau of Mines personnel brought together many of these individual studies, and from them have attempted to develop a coordinated plan for modeling radon daughter concentrations in the uranium mine environment. A rock classification for drilling and boring is presented covering most equipment types and providing an estimation of the key parameters for operation, such as thrust and speed, and of performance such as penetration rate and bit life. Drilling and boring are significant and integral aspects of both the mining and heavy construction industries. Together these constitute over 20% of the G.N.P. Drilling and boring represent the most arduous mechanical processes performed in industry. Their misapplication quickly leads to equipment destruction, hazards, and to major delays. The classification is unified in two ways: 1) for a particular rock class several parameters can be estimated, 2) the classification integrates most excavating activities (i.e. digging, ripping and even blasting), and is derived from ground control. The rock classification provides a job property, based on fundamental and index properties, which yields quick and rough estimates of vital information. However it does not obviate the need for a more thorough analysis, and maintaining field records. BACKGROUND In order to adequately describe a drilling operation the conditions, activity, and equipment must be characterized. Of these the major independent variables are the conditions. Conditions focus on the geologic mass and also consider whether the site is surface or underground. Many Third World African countries are well-endowed with minerals - especially gold and diamonds - while only a few have important base metal deposits. For decades since colonial rule, political and economic conditions discouraged interest by Western capital. Influence from Soviet Bloc countries, however, has declined with the move toward multi-party rule. And the left wing orientation, once widely favored by Third World African countries, has almost disappeared. With International Monetary Fund (IMF) encouragement, these Third World African countries now encourage representational government and solicit western finance to expand their industries. Mining is especially encouraged. The North American mining industry is following the same trail as other capital intensive industries and looking abroad for opportunities. The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada released figures that show exploration expenditures in that country were halved between 1987 and 1990. Figures for the United States are not so easily found but every indication points to a downward trend. While total annual expenditures on US exploration by corporations as a group are either declining or remaining constant, expenditures away from North America is increasing. Gold exploration expenditures in 1991 by the major companies tracked by Minerals Economics Group were less in the United States than for Latin America and the Southwest Pacific combined. The same study showed as much was spent in the Republic of South Africa and "Other" areas combined as in the United States. Expenditures by major corporations in these "Other" areas amount to only 5.2% of their total budget. Third World Africa is a major component of these "Other" areas.

Recent publications indicate that there is a rising interest in the field of mining method selection, and increasing efforts are being undertaken to develop satisfying solutions. Yet, computer assistance for mining method selection (MMS), or in other, terms assistance in the (pre-)feasibility state of a project, still lags behind the computer application in other mining activities. This is true for research as well as for application. This paper is intended as a contribution to the development in computer-assisted mining method selection, and focuses especially on underground hard-rock mining. It is structured in four main parts. The first deals with general aspects of mining method. selection within the process of mine planning, and with problems and requirements which derive from this specific situation. In the second part some numerical MMS-approaches hitherto published are briefly introduced, and investigations on these approaches are discussed. Based on .these experiences, in the third part an analysis of the complex system MMS is presented. It focuses on heuristics, influencing factors, objectives, assessment-routines and mining methods, and emphasizes the essential necessity of a profound mining method description (MMD) specially developed for the requirements of MMS and numerical processing. Accordingly the fourth part of this paper presents a mining method description model developed at the Department of Mining Engineering, Montan-University Leoben (MUL), Austria. It describes the consequences of the investigation, in particular the new mining method description model, on 'the design of a MMS-system. The paper closes with a outlook on the possibilities of an successful MMS-system being realised.

Introduction The reclamation of mine/mill tailings areas is undertaken for a variety of objectives including safety, appearance, economical use of lands and forests and long term storage of a future resource. The establishing of criteria for these objectives at any site is a shared task of the government and mining company. Our attention in this paper is directed to uranium mine/ mill tailings as they are handled in the Canadian industry and in the unique Canadian climate. We focus our attention on the state of the art. Uranium is a ubiquitous mineral forming an average of 4 g per tonne of the Earth's crust. Ores are mined at about 500 g per tonne so that the residual content of uranium in tailings is comparable to average background levels. However, as in most mine/mill operations, the ore contains other minerals that become readily mobile after milling operations. Thus the main objective of tailings impoundment is the stability both physically and chemically of the mobile materials. Since the requirements for the operation and construction of tailings areas in Canada have changed considerably over the past decade, there exists a great many mine/mill tailings areas which while considered adequate in their day, would not meet modern criteria. However, most of these installations pose no concern or hazard to the public. The proximity of mine/mill development to inhabited land areas has necessitated more stringent modes of tailings operations and provisions for tailings site reclamation. The more important of these have been: 1) the prevention of dyke failure, with large liquid-solid outflows onto adjoining lands, and 2) the prevention of seepage from the tails of pollutants such as chlorides, sulphides, heavy metals and radionuclides. Uranium mill tailings are discharged as a slurry from the concentrator after the removal of generally only about 1000 g, or less, per tonne of uranium from the as-mined ore. As a consequence, a great volume of low level activity waste is generated. Award of the Design/Build Agreement for construction of Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG’s) Niagara Tunnel Project was made after an intensive 8-month international procurement process. The 14.4-m diameter × 10.4-km long rock tunnel will divert 500 m3/s of water from the Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck hydroelectric generating complex. The procurement process and Design/Build Agreement included features to address the owner’s requirements regarding risk allocation and cost and schedule certainty, while encouraging innovative ideas from the industry, both technically and commercially. The process included an international expression of interest and prequalification, followed by an invitation for design/build proposals to qualified proponents, and comprehensive proposal evaluations and negotiations with several respondent proponents. An honorarium was provided to the unsuccessful participants in the proposal stage. The resultant negotiated Design/Build Agreement includes Owner’s Mandatory Requirements, negotiated contract terms and conditions, performanceincentive bonuses and liquidated damages for schedule and water delivery performance, a multistaged Geotechnical Baseline Report, joint risk management, references to preexisting community impact agreements and measures to reduce impact on tourism. It also addresses regulatory approvals and permits, an owner controlled insurance policy that required reference to the International Tunneling Insurance Group (ITIG) Code of Practice for Risk Management as a condition of coverage, site specific safety, security and environmental plans, formal team building, a dispute review board, and escrow documentation.

Bechtel Civil and Minerals, Inc., one of the Bechtel group of companies, is a large engineering and construction firm that services the mining industry, among others. The firm's head, S. D. Bechtel Jr., comments on how his E&C company is dealing with the recessionary economy. First, he offered a historical perspective. About a half century ago-in the middle of the Great Depression-W. A. Bechtel and several business partners drew up a fixed price bid to build the Hoover Dam. At that moment in history, the W. A. Bechtel Co. was a modest success, but the times were troubled and uncertain. Money was scarce and a lot of contractors across the country were one project ahead of bankruptcy. The bid for Hoover was a make-or-break proposition for Bechtel, and it turned out successfully. The Hoover Dam was a no-frills operation in an isolated and harsh environment. There was plenty of hard work, long hours, and not many amenities. Controlling costs was critical. Everyone knew what had to be done, and why and what the consequences were. Today's Challenge Bechtel is now a bigger, more complex organization whose management views the current economic recession as a challenge to be met in much the same way W. A. Bechtel met the challenge of the Hoover Dam: by pulling together with a sense of purpose and direction. In many respects, Bechtel's situation today has a number of parallels to that which faced my grandfather. The company is eminently successful, but times are tough and there are plenty of signs that they could get tougher. My grandfather bet on the Hoover Dam to insure the future health of his company and I think we can work together again in that same tradition, make some tough decisions together, and the company's future can be just as promising. The first and most important requirement is to make certain that everyone understands the situation. The Bechtel group of companies are in an excellent financial position now. Its workload hit an alltime high in 1982 and it is well positioned in its principal markets. But the next two years may be critical for the company. Traditionally, Bechtel's work load lags behind general developments in the economy. Although many of its clients continue to suffer serious business difficulties, Bechtel is only beginning to feel the impact. The worldwide market for basic metals remains soft; relatively low prices and abundant supplies of oil and gas have flattened the petroleum market and made once promising synfuels projects economically unattractive; utility clients are still caught in the vise between overregulation and escalating costs. And persistently high, long-term interest rates have made capital investments expensive and difficult to justify. The company maintained a healthy workload through 1982. In some areas it has had little new work and consequently has been forced to lay off some staff as projects have been canceled or concluded. In other areas new work has tided the company over and more people have been hired. But new work bookings have fallen off, creating some uncertainty for the near future. 1983 requirements are clear, although seemingly contradictory. Belt tightening and cost reduction are necessary for Bechtel to remain healthy and competitive, enabling it to handle a possible further downturn with a minimum of turmoil and dislocation. At the same time, we need to allocate resources and funds in areas that will keep us positioned for the turn-around marketplace.

INTRODUCTION This paper describes operational procedures and instrumentation which were developed to implement a patented method of detecting and locating uranium ore bodies. All equipment was designed for accurate and reliable use under difficult field conditions. Data resulting from these developments, some of which are incorporated in a companion paper for this conference*, have contributed to our understanding, of the nature and significance of naturally-occurring radon exposures. Further applications of these techniques may prove useful in studying anthropogenic radon in evaluating the significance of variability in radon flux, or in taking proper account of the contribution of natural radon to ambient radon concentrations, particularly in mineralized regions. OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES The uranium search technique employed by GEOMET begins with a [reconnaissance mode], which utilizes a series of ambient air filter samples taken from a moving or standing vehicle to detect anamalous concentrations of radon. These samples are normally taken at night under stable (temperature inversion) or neutral atmospheric conditions, to avoid the rapid dispersion of the radon clouds typical of daytime turbulent conditions. Radon daughters formed by the decay of radon quickly attach to ambient aerosol particles and are captured on the surface of a membrane filter during a five-minute sampling period. The filter is placed in a portable alpha scintillation counter, and a five-minute count is started at a preset time after the completion of the sampling period. This count is followed immediately by a second five-minute count to enable determination of the cloud age, based on consideration of the relative half-lives of the initial radon daughters. With the use of tables computed from the mathematics of the uranium decay process, and with the measured radon background accounted for, the first and second counts are used to estimate the time which has elapsed since the pure radon initially emanated from the earth's surface. This cloud age, combined with wind speed and direction measurements made at the beginning and end of each sample, as well as with an understanding of the effects of local terrain features on wind trajectory, provides an estimate of the Probable location of the source. In practice the reconnaissance mode involves one vehicle with a single operator to take the five-minute samples, moving or standing, along any available roads or trails in the area to be covered. Under the usual nighttime stable conditions the cool air flows downslope and downvalley, and the operator will pay special attention to locations along the axes and confluences of the natural downflow patterns. These facilitate sampling of large air drainage areas. Successful detection of sources of radon based on high concentrations of radon daughters, and substantiated by evidence of "fresh" clouds, are frequently made on the basis of a relatively few samples taken judiciously by an experienced operator during a reconnaissance. At this point he has a choice: he can continue to cover the designated reconnaissance area, leaving the localization of any anomalous radon detections to await the ranking of detections by priority, or he can continue with localization of the detected source, either alone or by radioing for another vehicle to assist in triangulation operations. Localization of a source involves skillful and experienced use of the continuously collected data on concentration, age, and wind speed and direction, together with knowledge of the terrain from observation and contour maps, and exploitation of the available roads. Since age ratios are dependent solely on proximity of the source and wind speed, decreasing [cloud ages] based on statistically significant increasing age ratios represent the most useful. information in localization. The [magnitude of the concentration] of radon daughter products is also useful; however, it may vary widely for a variety of reasons during sampling for a localization, thus making this a secondary parameter for localization. Large values of concentration are of course useful; typical results for successful detection of a strong anomaly would yield alpha counts ranging from 10 to 25 times background values. These counts are convertible to ambient radon concentrations by appropriate consideration of the decay process. Successful localizations of radon sources using this procedure with ambient atmospheric measurements normally will narrow a source location to within an area ranging in size from less than a quarter of a square mile to at most a square mile, and frequently give information on the probable shape of the source (in plan view) on the earth's surface. Judicious use of this procedure could undoubtedly provide finer localization, but the coarser results just described are adequate for this Phase of GEOMET's uranium exploration procedures.

"Sierra Gorda SCM is a joint venture partnership of KGHM International (owned by KGHM SA, Poland), Sumitomo Metal Mining and Sumitomo Corp. (Japan) operating in northern Chile. The Sierra Gorda openpit mine and coppermolybdenum processing plant will become one of the largest mines in the world. The need for optimum production efficiency and sustainability has driven the creation of the most modern, wellinstrumented mine in Chile. This article contains a general review of the project including geology and history.This was a fast-track project going from greenfield site acquisition to mill startup in 10 years. Highly experienced and motivated engineers and technical staff have overcome many significant challenges resulting in a rapid ramp-up of production capacity. A potential expansion to double the production rate in the fourth year of operation has also been intensely studied.The Sierra Gorda property is located in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, in the District of Sierra Gorda, Region II of Antofagasta, Chile (Fig. 1). There is almost no precipitation in this area. The mine site is generally flat with some rolling hills. The project is located about 5 km (3 miles) from the village of Sierra Gorda at an elevation of approximately 1,700 m (5,600 ft) above mean sea level. The village is near a highway and railway line. The city of Calama, home of the famous Chuquicamata Mine, is located about 60 km (37 miles) northeast of Sierra Gorda. In addition, the SG mine is in the midst of numerous other mines including Spence, Esperanza, Mantos Blancos, El Tesoro, Lomas Bayas, Gabriela Mistral, El Abra, Radomiro Tomic and Escondida, to name a few.The primary organizational value at Sierra Gorda is "Zero Harm." This includes employees, contractors, the environment, the community, plant facilities and mine equipment. A cornerstone of this program is called 5X5S (five by five S), which combines the lean principles of 5S with the safety model of taking five steps back and thinking about the task at hand for five seconds, five minutes, the time it takes to assess and manage the risk. "People caring about people" promotes proactive engagement in the safety of coworkers and others at work and at home."

Identifying the optimum ultimate height for heap leaching ore requires the consideration of a number of competing factors. A primary limitation is the reduction in the permeability of the ore with increasing heap heights. At low permeabilities the heap can blind off, cause serious ponding and runoff, and become very difficult to rinse at closure. The authors present a laboratory methodology that has been successfully used on several projects to identify the maximum height for controlling heap permeability.

The streamline method of recovery prediction reduces a two-dimensional problem to a bundle of one-dimensional ones. This paper presents the development and application of a novel scaling technique which, when used with a streamline model, causes s bundle of one-dimensional problems to further reduce to a single one-dimensional calculation. The one-dimensional calculation accounts for chemical-rock interactions and the streamline model for areal sweep. The scaling technique significantly reduces computation time, is readily modified to desk-top calculations, and can be applied to both absorbing and reacting species. The work was sponsored by the Interior Department's Bureau of Mines.

In, any open pit mine the ability to make accurate production estimations for the shovel-truck system is an important asset. This is true in an operating mine wishing to estimate production under a set of system modifications (i.e. more trucks, fewer loaders, change in roads, etc.), as well as in the pre- mining planning stages of a property. Many different methods have been proposed for solving this problem; some of the methods rely heavily on "rules of thumb" while others are highly mathematical and require access to a high speed digital computer. Analysis of shovel-truck systems with the use of simulation models is a widely accepted technique within the industry. Through the use of such models it is possible to account for much of the inherent variability of the system and thus produce meaningful results. However, simulation studies are expensive.
