Mining has been the mainstay of the Woods Creek Valley for more than a century. The head of the valley is at the Continental Divide, about 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. First, it was the quest for gold and silver that drew people to the valley. Then, when molybdenum was classified as a strategic metal by the U. S. Government during World War I, it was the valley's molybdenum mineralization which attracted the most attention. Molybdenum is used primarily as an alloying material in superior grades of steel. Circumstances responsible for providing the label "Urad" are unknown, but Urad is variously reported to be an acronym for "Uranium Research and Development" or "Uranium Research of America Division". The search for uranium was fruitless as no ore grade uranium exists in this area. The moly orebody was first developed and mined by the Primos Exploration Company from 1914 to 1919. During World War II, the mine was purchased by the government and turned over to the Molybdenum Corporation of America to operate. In 1963 AMAX Inc. purchased the property for $2 million. After spending nearly $30 million for exploration and development, AMAX put the mine into production again in 1967.

Operators of coal preparation plants use equipment such as large-capacity dump trucks and bulldozers to haul, spread and compact refuse material to conform to federal and state regulations governing the disposal of solid waste. For example, federal regulations require that refuse be spread and compacted in layers not more than two feet thick. If the refuse layers or piles have poor load-bearing characteristics, movement of equipment over them becomes extremely difficult. The increasing cost and limited space for the construction of settling ponds extensively used for fine refuse disposal are leading to the growing practice of dewatering the fine refuse by means of vacuum disc filters and combining the resulting filter cake with coarse refuse for waste bank disposal. However, this filter cake usually contains more than 25% moisture. Therefore, when it is combined with coarse refuse, the moisture level of the total refuse may become high enough to impair the load-bearing strength of the refuse. Precisely this problem and the attendant difficulties of moving heavy equipment arose when vacuum disc filters were installed at a preparation plant in West Virginia. Combining the moist filter cake with the coarse refuse generally results in a 12% moisture level for the total refuse at this plant. At this moisture level, the refuse can still be handled with some difficulty by the equipment. However, the problem has frequently been compouned after rains.

When the subject of plant computers is brought up most people visualize the computer's controlling the entire plant with very little operator intervention. Actually, this picture is true today in only a limited number of cases and will certainly not be true in the minerals industries for many years to come. There are several ways in which a plant computer can significantly contribute to improving plant operation and closed loop control is only one of these. First of all, what are the basic ingredients for good plant control? For good plant control, two requirements must be met. First, the operator must get good information feedback from the process and then he must know what action to take in response to this information. Control information can be obtained through instruments, laboratory analyses, or through simple visual observation. If it is timely and accurate and the operator knows how to use it, then we have the makings of a good plant control system. The computer can be of help in both these areas by getting good data back to the operator and in helping to develop a good control scheme for the plant.

"INTRODUCTION A positive workplace environmental, health, and safety (EHS) culture affords organizations and corporations many benefits, including increased trust and employee morale, sustainable EHS performance improvements, and reliable productivity and profit margin growth. Unfortunately, many leaders and EHS professionals struggle daily to achieve and maintain positive workplace cultures and consistent business results. While lack of management support, corporate or employee buy-in, resources, and time are common factors that conflict with an EHS culture and safe work behaviors and processes, there are many other actions that threaten the positive attributes of an organization’s culture. Often these culture killers are not recognized, or worse yet, ignored because they are considered taboo. For example, voicing observations or questioning long-held management practices or process that were initially designed to promote EHS values, but no longer do so. Unfortunately, this could be viewed as challenging authority, not being a team player or even not valuing EHS. And for those that speak up, the potential for negative consequences can be real impediments to positive change. Having an open mind, constantly striving to identify culture killers, and putting forth the effort to eliminate them are the first steps to begin reaping the benefits of having a sound workplace culture. This paper helps readers to: • Recognize culture killers that negatively impact fostering and maintaining sustainable EHS cultures in the workplace. • Understand how to prevent, avoid, and respond to culture killers, before they wreak havoc in your organization. • Assess EHS culture strength, and implement plans to continuously improve it. The desire to draw boundaries around concepts, put things into boxes, and nail down requirements for something that is virtually impossible to solidify for any length of time is quite fascinating! These desires can pose challenges when trying to define what the perfect EHS culture should look like. The very act of trying to define our culture tends to create silos, and these silos, in turn, can become “culture killers”. The following is one of the most common culture killers. UNBALANCED ORGANIZATIONS TRIGGER CULTURE KILLERS Unbalanced organizations occur when an organization’s constantly shifting focus forces other important needs to take a back seat--until the focus changes again. This balancing act can be detrimental and lead to catastrophic results including low morale, lack of trust, employee dissatisfaction, high turnover, increased incidents, poor profit margins, loss of market share, and ultimately into organization-wide failure."

Although out of the ordinary, MINING ENGINEERING is pleased to present a few photographs that typify Western US mining activity during WWII. The photographs, taken by R.G. Zellers at Colorado mining operations between 1942 and 1946, were primarily intended for equipment manufacturers. The pictures capture scenes of hardworking miners during a time when output was essential to fuel a wartime effort. In addition to providing a rare opportunity to step back 40 years and view the equipment and activity common at the time, Zellers' skill with photo composition and his ability to obtain clarity in dimly lit underground operations gives viewers an acute awareness of the dampness and dirt of the mines, and a sense for the miners' limited working space.

The Riley Pass strip mine is an abandoned uranium-bearing lignite deposit in Harding County, South Dakota, covering about 150 acres of highwalls, pit floor and mine spoils exhibiting elevated levels of radioactivity. Six reclamation design alternatives were developed, ranging from doing nothing to reclaiming to approximate original con-tour. The alternatives were evaluated for expense, site stabilization, and mitigation of public safety hazards. A comparative economic evaluation on three of the alternatives was completed for the Forest Service in selecting an alternative and substantiating federal funding requests. This evaluation included economic impacts associated with physical and radiologic health hazards, affects on recreational users, socioeconomic impacts and environmental improvement.

Modern mining consistently faces controversy. Public sentiment impacts the permitting and development of mines, so a quality public relations (PR) program for mining companies may improve society’s impression of the mining industry. Developing mines face more permitting challenges than operating mines, which stems from a lack of societal trust given the history of mining and its impact on the environment. Two case studies were selected based on the type of public controversy they face to demonstrate how pervasive permitting issues are in industry. Both Pebble Mine, owned by Northern Dynasty Minerals (NDM), and Black Butte, owned by Sandfire Resources America Inc (SRA), experienced difficulties with their water permitting due to potential risks their mine developments posed to local fish populations. Pebble has, to date, failed in all of their attempts to become permitted due to concern for the water and the fish. Black Butte dealt with the same problems, on a smaller scale, but was able to become permitted. These two mines will be discussed in detail including local history, mine setting, mining history in America, prevalent culture groups, technology development, and intercultural communication competence (ICC). The mining industry needs to evaluate its ICC skills since ICC directly determines the effectiveness of PR. Based on Barna’s Stumbling Blocks for intercultural communication, methods for improving the mining industry’s PR will be suggested in the hope of easing the permitting process for future mines by developing ICC.

The Bay Park Conveyance Project was one of the largest microtunneling and rehab projects in the United States at the time of completion. The completed project conveys treated water from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility located in Nassau County, New York, which currently discharges an average of 50 million gallons per day (MGD) of treated water into Reynolds Channel, to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) ocean outfall pipe. The pipe carrying treated wastewater was installed approximately 20–60 feet below the surface. The treated wastewater is conveyed via microtunnel construction of a 2-mile long force main from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility to an existing aqueduct under the Sunrise Highway, the rehabilitation of an 7.3-mile stretch of the aqueduct via sliplining, and construction via microtunnel of a 1.6-mile-long force main to connect the rehabilitated aqueduct to the existing Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) outfall, which discharges and diffuses treated water three miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. This paper will review the Design-Build requirements, the chosen innovative solutions during planning for the micro tunneling portion of the project and review the microtunnel construction on the project.

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. This study proposes a methodology for dewatering of mine waste using a multistage process, combining geotextile tubes and anionic polyacrylamide (PAM), which accelerates the recycling process of water for aggregate mine waste facilities. For this purpose, waste from a rock quarry located in Istanbul was investigated. Flocculation tests revealed that the use of anionic PAM at an optimum dosage reduced sedimentation time and decreased turbidity. The compatibility of geotextiles and mine waste conditioned with different dosages of the effective PAM was evaluated by rapid dewatering tests, considering the water content of the filter cake, amount of infiltrated solid content, and rate of filtration. Geotextile dewatering tests were also performed on PAM-free and conditioned suspensions. The dewatering process was optimized by the use of a geotextile tube in two stages: (i) on the unconditioned suspension and (ii) on recovered PAM-conditioned leachate. Directing PAM-free non-hazardous soil-based material obtained in stage i to alternative beneficial uses is suggested, to minimize the volume of waste. Furthermore, recycling of the effluent obtained at the second stage of the proposed method will ensure more efficient water reuse

Investigations show that injuries and fatalities in mining workplaces in developing countries are increasing. In Turkey, the number of workers killed in occupational accidents in the Zonguldak Hard Coal production region per 100,000 tons of coal production is 2.83 in the private sector and 2.03 in the public sector. For this reason, it is important to conduct risk analyses in terms of occupational health and safety and to implement measures quickly. Risks are evaluated with reactive and proactive approaches. Because hazards and events are often unpredictable in high-risk areas such as coal mining, it is not practical or meaningful to plan proactively in advance for every possible situation underground, especially psychosocial risks. However, it is important to develop protective strategies and measures for unexpected events or to take a reactive approach to prevent future incidents or accidents and to identify psychosocial risks. Therefore, reactive risk assessments based on the tactics and strategies of criminology can be conducted and spatiotemporal geographic information system (GIS) techniques can be utilized, enabling managers in mining workplaces to correct assessments.

Intensive hydrologic monitoring of the Powder river basin has been on-going since the early 1970's. Data were used in environ- mental assessments and for determination of hydrologic consequences associated with coal mining activities. For most coal mine operators, data collection has continued in this baseline mode with little or no statistical analysis of the data and with no statistical procedure established to detect changes in groundwater quality. For the past four years Powder River Coal Company has studied several statistical techniques to analyze groundwater quality. Three objectives were pursued: 1) to determine the baseline water quality for key aquifers; 2) to determine which wells could be deleted from the monitoring program without reducing monitoring effectiveness; and 3) to define a statistical test to determine water quality changes. Knowledge of the regional geo-hydrologic system was combined with an analysis of the water quality monitoring in order to identify homogeneous aquifer zones. All wells within an aquifer zone were treated as one population, and a t-test was used to determine the minimum number of samples needed to define the water quality for each aquifer zone. Results indicate that the data for each aquifer zone were nor- mally distributed and that groundwater quality could be defined using a fairly small number of samples. Because of the minimum sample size test, groundwater quality sampling was reduced by between 75 and 85 percent.

Contributions made by mining have played a much more significant role in the development of civilization than is generally conceded by historians or recognized by ordinary citizens. In modern society, mined products pervade all industry and the lives of all civilized people. Early man relied largely on stone and ceramics, and eventually metals, to fashion tools and weapons. Civilization was advanced by discoveries such as abundant supplies of high-quality flint in northern France and southern England and firesetting to break rock. Middle Eastern cultures flourished not only because of agriculture and trade, but also because of mineral-rich deposits nearby. The earliest miners date back perhaps to 300,000 BC; their quest was for nonmetallic minerals (chert, flint, obsidian) suitable for utensils and eventually for weapons. Other rocks and minerals (ceramics, clay, salt, meteoric iron) attracted the miners for jewelry, cosmetics, construction materials, food seasoning, and coinage. At first, their excavations were confined to the surface, either pits or placers. But by about 40,000 BC, mine workings had been extended underground as short adits or shafts, and by 8000 BC as elaborate interconnected openings 300 ft (90 m) in depth. "Dust pollution is very serious in coal mining process, which is a great threat to the underground staff health and equipment and facilities safety. Coal seam water injection in mining process is an effective way to reduce coal mine dust concentration at the source. However, the effectiveness of water injection is limited in high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam. To improve the moisture content of coal seam, expand the wetting range and enhance the effect of dust reduction by water injection, the injectability and influencing factors of coal water injection are analyzed by numerical simulation method, and the sealing technology under high-pressure condition is studied. Then, according to the practical conditions of Tangkou coal mine, the parameters and process system of process system are designed, the effect of high-pressure water injection in coal seam was determined by testing water injection quantity, water increment and dust concentration. It is showed that the dust-removal rate of the high dust concentration operation such as falling coal and moving frame is 63.49% and 59.72%, the maximum dust-removal rate of multi-processes is 53%, which achieve a high level of application. The research results in this paper is of important theoretical and practical value to improve the water injection effect of high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam and improve the efficiency of dust removal in coal mining process.Introduction With the increasing of the depth and mechanization of coal mining, coal dust, the impact of ground pressure, ground temperature and other natural disasters continue to upgrade the harm degree (Wang 2011, Wu et al 2012), disaster incidents occur frequently, which seriouslythreaten the safe and efficient mining and the physical and mental health of underground staff. Coal seam water injection can effectively reduce the coal dust when coal crushing, prevent the impact of mine pressure, coal and gas outburst disasters, by increasing the thermal conductivity of coal, reduce coal temperature, and prevent spontaneous combustion of coal. In addition, coal seam water can soften the hard coal, so that speed up the recovery rate, improve coal production and efficiency (Wu et al 2008, Nie et al 2007). However, the coal seam in many mining area is with high-pressure and low-porosity feature, Coal joint cracks are not developed and relatively hard, water injection is difficult in these coal seams, then the desired disaster prevention effect cannot be achieved (Jin et al 2001, Zhao et al 2000). "Froth flotation is the most widely used method of separating fine coal, especially coal with coking properties. However, froth flotation is not efficient for treating ultrafine coal and coarse coal particles. Our previous fundamental test results demonstrated that cavitation-generated nanobubbles around 700 nm in diameter can significantly improve coal and phosphate flotation performance over a wide particle size range. In this study, the effect of nanobubbles on the flotation performance of different particle size fractions of coal was investigated using a bank of 10-L flotation cells, a specially designed 50-mm inside diameter column and a 152-mm inside diameter column. It was found that nanobubbles that were either directly formed on or subsequently attached to the surface of coal particles during the froth flotation process improved flotation efficiency. The use of nanobubbles in a bank of mechanical cells flotation and column flotation significantly increased the flotation recovery at a given product grade. Nanobubbles increased the flotation rate constants of different coal particle sizes. The presence of nanobubbles in flotation slurry could extend the lower and the upper particle size limits for effective coal flotation.IntroductionFor minus 0.6 mm fine coal or minus 0.15 mm ultrafine coal particles, froth flotation is known to be the most efficient and the most cost-effective separation technique. However, flotation efficiency decreases sharply with ultrafine and relatively coarse coal particles. Studies have shown that the low flotation efficiency of ultrafine particles is mainly due to the low probability of bubble-particle collision (Yoon et al., 1989; Ralston and Dukhin, 1999). Enhanced flotation of fine and ultrafine coal can be achieved by increasing collision and attachment probabilities.The top size of particles that can be recovered by flotation depends on the combination of mineral properties and flotation devices. Turbulence in flotation devices is an important factor that affects the stability of bubble-particle aggregates. Even in the flotation of fine particles, bubble-particle detachment can significantly influence the kinetics of flotation taking place in mechanical cells, which provide intensive turbulent agitation (Deglon et al., 1999). Coarse particle flotation is more difficult, because increased agitation is required to maintain particles in suspension and coarse particles are more likely to detach under turbulent conditions (Mankosa and Kohmuench, 2002; Soto and Barbery, 1991). More efficient attachment of particles and improved flotation rate has been observed when tiny bubbles coexist with conventional-sized flotation bubbles (Attalla et al., 2000; Tao et al., 2010; Fan et al., 2010a, b, c, d; Fan et al., 2012)."

Effective and sustained corporate energy management programs are becoming a necessity for energy users as electricity deregulation laws are enacted on a state-by-state basis across the country and environmental regulations pertaining to emissions become more prevalent. The “Total Energy Asset Management” (TEAM) approach has been developed to assist energy end users with the development and implementation of corporate energy management programs designed to reduce energy risks and increase energy cost savings. This paper highlights the ways in which this approach can be applied to the mining industry while minimizing initial program implementation costs and increasing potential program benefits. Nearly the entire mining industry has become very focused on identifying opportunities to reduce costs per unit of yield. The industry as a whole has increasingly faced pricing pressures in large part due to the effects of global competition. The result of international marketplace participation and the emergence of higher efficiency recovery techniques have resulted in flat or even decreased prices for mining products. Thus, opportunities to reduce costs are actually opportunities to gain a competitive edge over similar mining operations. Due to the energy-intensive nature of many mining operations, the costs associated with energy are often a substantial percentage of operating costs. Therefore, it becomes very important to develop the corporate mentality that energy is an asset whose use should be optimized globally. In addition to the cost benefits of the TEAM approach, other benefits may occur such as reductions in facility greenhouse gas emissions.

Ore agglomeration has been used as part of the heap leaching process for the last 40 years. However, industrial experience shows that the lack of a universal agglomeration standard has limited the benefits of this, otherwise, valuable unit process. The more complex the ore, in terms of the nature and relative abundance of fines (<74 μm), the more important that the agglomeration product satisfies some minimal requirements. This paper presents an agglomeration scale that identifies the quality standards for agglomerates and documents the resulting mechanical, physical, and hydraulic (hydrodynamic) behavior associated with each level on the agglomeration scale. The hydrodynamic properties of an agglomeration product are critical for the proper design of a leaching operation and, as shown in this paper, can be used to select the optimal pretreatment method for a given ore sample. Agglomeration as a unit process not only allows better conditioning of the hydrodynamic behavior of the ore but also creates an opportunity for optimized delivery of reagents to kick-start the leaching process which may ultimately improve the economic performance of leaching. Industrial case data is used to demonstrate the shortfalls associated with low-quality agglomeration and the benefits of improved agglomeration which range from enhanced porous structure (better percolation and drainage characteristics) to better metallurgical response (faster kinetics and higher metal recovery). Proper agglomeration has been used to render otherwise untreatable ores into valuable leaching resources.

The rapid increase of P2O5 use for food, biofuels, and LiFePO4 batteries etc. accelerates the depletion rate of phosphate reserves. In the phosphate industry, a significant amount of ultrafine phosphate has been discarded as slime tailing due to processing difficulties. The major problems associated with ultrafine particle flotation are low probability of bubble-particle collision and adhesion, and high probability of unwanted gangue particles entrainment. This paper investigates the enhanced ultrafine phosphate particle flotation probability by Eriez’ CavTube generated fine/ ultrafine bubbles and the improved flotation selectivity by wash water etc. Ultrafine phosphates with various gangue minerals of quartz/muscovite, calcite/dolomite, and iron/ silica were studied. Microscopic observations show that the entrained ultrafine gangue minerals can be minimized by using wash water in column flotation. A three-factor threelevel central composite experimental design was conducted for ultrafine phosphate flotation. For comparison, both benchtop mechanical cell and laboratory column flotation tests were performed at their optimal respective flotation conditions. Using Eriez CavTube column flotation technology for Industries Chimiques du Senegal (ICS) ultrafine slime tailings, a concentrate grade of 36.0% P2O5, was achieved at 89.4% P2O5 recovery. Improved flotation performance was achieved using column flotation as compared to benchtop mechanical cell flotation. The benefits of Eriez’ column flotation technology realized from this study include the high P2O5 grade and recovery.

Using an approach based on the theory of similitude, the author develops a general equation and related concepts that provide new insights to an old problem. The load-bearing capacity (strength) of a square, rectangular, or cylindrical prism of a brittle material such as rock, coal, or concrete is expressed as the mathematical product of a size effect, a shape effect, and a function of the mechanical properties (deformability, cleat/joint spacing, and friction) of the pillar, roof and floor materials. Through an application of multivariate statistical analysis, the results of assorted tests and observations of failed pillars can be combined into a fundamental scaling equation, which provides a unified, consistent approach to the estimation of mine pillar strength. The form of the equation is sufficiently general to be able to incorporate refinements in the characterization of the basis factors, as they become available through future experimentation and analysis.

"In coal and mineral processing, several numeric parameters are used to quantify the separation performance of unit operations. For density-based separations, the partition curve is used as the starting point for many stages of diagnostic analyses. The curve is often quantified by its midpoint slope sharpness, and this single value is subsequently used for technical evaluation, benchmarking, and comparison. While this analytical approach does depict misplacement by relative density class, it inherently prioritizes middling separation and does not consider process economics or the micro-price value of individual classes. An alternative parameter, the organic efficiency, does indirectly consider process economics, but it does not reveal information on the root cause of lost revenue or misplacement. In this paper, a new analytical approach, the partition moment of inertia, is introduced. This parameter reconciles the technical misplacement data derived from the partition curve with the economic data derived from micro-pricing. The result is a new analytical procedure that promises better use of performance data. IntroductionPartition curves are commonly used in the characterization, evaluation and simulation of various physical separators. In mineral processing, partition curve analysis is routinely applied to hydrocyclones, screens, density separators and other beneficiation technologies that are based on intensive physical properties. Graphically, the partition curve depicts the recovery of particles as a function of the physical property on which the separation is based, such as particle density, size or magnetic susceptibility. Given the probabilistic nature of many real separators, the partition curve often exhibits a characteristic S shape (Fig. 1), similar to a cumulative normal distribution.
