As development in underground coal mines progresses away from the critical components of the ventilation system, including the main fans and ventilation shafts, resistance within the system is markedly increased. This results in higher pressure and flow requirements from the main fan(s) to maintain adequate face ventilation. Upgrades to the primary ventilation system are often required. The use of booster fans underground is a potentially practical alternative to the addition of shafts and surface fans. This study presents simulations of the use of booster fans in two underground ventilation scenarios, one longwall and one room-and-pillar. The booster fan effects on the power requirements of the ventilation systems are evaluated.

This paper presents a case study of two major Australian infrastructure projects that used digital engineering to facilitate design delivery: WestConnex Project (Rozelle Interchange), and Sydney Metro West (Eastern Tunnelling Package). The paper presents project overviews and building information modeling (BIM) execution and focuses on modeling techniques, software utilization, data management strategies and how the digital models helped the design-build team mitigate impacts to schedule by identifying clashes between disciplines before the execution of work. Finally, it demonstrates the positive and transformative impact of digital engineering on the design and construction of large underground infrastructure projects and highlights its role in asset management throughout the project lifecycle.

The use of deep wells for waste disposal is not a new technique. The production phase of the oil industry has been using this method to dispose of unwanted oil field brine since the 1930's The adoption of this method by other branches of industry, however, to dispose of manufactured wastes is a relatively new development, but one which is finding increased use (2). Deep well waste disposal is not an ordinary technique even though it is finding relatively wide application. In fact, just the opposite is true; it is still a rather extraordinary measure. It is not now, nor is it ever likely to be a disposal method which can be assured of success before it is tried.

En un proyecto patrocinado por el Instituto Nacional de Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional (NIOSH), los investigadores de la Escuela de Minas de Colorado utilizaron un enfoque innovador de mallas, el cual permite una fácil adaptación del modelo CFD para adaptarse a una variedad de geometrías de minado de tajos largos ventilados por canales (bleeders) y progresivamente sellados (referidos a menudo como bleederless en los Estados Unidos), con la porosidad y la permeabilidad de la cámara escalables en un amplio intervalo. Mineral processing activities in general reflected the economic ills of 1981 and early 1982, but in some areas the depressed state of the industry resulted in increased activity. As were all aspects of the minerals industry, processing plant operations were severely affected by the recession-prone economy, by sagging prices for primary metal products-copper, molybdenum, nickel, iron, manganese, and especially uranium-and numerous shutdowns and layoffs. Copper production by major producers in Arizona and Utah was severely curtailed; Amax, the major US molybdenum, producer did considerable belt-tightening; and the uranium industry was in a state of disaster. Even the precious metal superstars-gold and silver-were affected, with a steady decline throughout the year in world market prices. Perhaps hardest hit have been newly developed properties, particularly in the uranium industry, and old-line properties where historical development impacts today. No longer can such properties afford the luxuries, for example, of a long haul distance between mine and plant or continued use of antiquated facilities. Surprisingly enough, the very state of the economy has caused increased activity in some sectors of the mineral processing industry. In mill design, although large projects have been tabled, smaller projects have gone on, with innovations in design, often for cost-saving reasons, that will affect future designing approaches. Economic restrictions are impacting on mill flowsheets as researchers look for improvements and better, less expensive techniques. Other unit processes-hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, concentration, materials handling-are impacted by the need for a better, less costly product. Although at the end of the first quarter of 1982, no major environmental legislation had been enacted, rumors persist that there will be a loosening of some of the stricter standards, both in the requirements themselves and in the time allowance for implementation. The year had seen some relaxation in how current legislation and standards are administered. For example, in OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) operations, there has been a shift toward voluntary checking of industry compliance with work rules, rather than emphasis on agency inspections. However, the industry continues to view environmental factors as having major influence on future operations and efforts to design for environmental safety are becoming almost as important as the processes themselves. Throughout the industry there has been a further focussing on project management, recognizing the necessity for tight control of budgets and schedules-and the systems used to effect them. Many modern export terminals are now in construction while others have either been held up or cancelled. Economics and environmental permits have been some of the major problems. Currently under construction are terminals in Newport News, VA; Charleston, SC; and Baltimore, MD. Expansion of existing facilities at Mobile, AL, and New Orleans, LA, is also well under way. A wide variety of systems and components are being used. They include traveling shiploaders, tunnel and bucket wheel reclaim¬ers, stackers and high line trippers, and bottom and side dump-type car dumpers. This study is a continuation of previous work designed to further explore the mechanism of the bioleaching of sulfide concentrate at neutral pH by heterotrophic bacteria Bacillus megaterium QM B1551. The concentrate contained 13.2 percent nickel (Ni) and 0.2 percent cobalt (Co), which presented primarily as pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Contact and noncontact bioleaching experiments were conducted with finely ground ore at an initial pH of 6, resulting in 44.7 percent of Ni and 38.2 percent of Co leached in the contact-bioleaching treatment. Oxidation experiments of sulfur, thiosulfate (S2O32−) and ferrous ions (Fe2+) by cell membrane were performed to verify whether sulfur transferase, thiosulfate quinone reductase and enzyme cytochrome B558 on the surface of the bacteria could be expressed to oxidize the sulfide. The results show that thiosulfate quinone reductase and cytochrome B558 could be expressed to oxidize S2O32− and Fe2+ to SO42− and Fe3+, respectively.

The basic principle of this separation method was already defined in the middle of the nineteenth century. However, a change over for the treatment of minerals has followed from the construction of proper machines i.e. airjigs and airtables as late as in the twenties and thirties of this century. The main application of this technology was subsequently found in coal processing and reached quite a great dimension in the two following decades. The number of applications of this method in mineral dressing plants decreased rapidly and has almost vanished in the fifties in favour of wet concentration procedures. It has been for a long period as long as up to the eighties that no more consideration was taken for applying dry gravity separation in the field of mineral processing also due to the successful introduction of flotation. Due to the fact that labour cost was increasing remarkably within the past period after the end of World War II also the economic conditions in the agricultural sector became more though. As a result there came up a great demand for harvesting machines. Since agricultural products can only be processed by dry methods in a prevailing number, highly developed machines were introduced for the dry processing of food and feed stuff.

The circulating fluid bed (CFB) technology can proudly point to its history of more than a quarter of a century of commercial operations. Over 80 CFB units operate in aluminum calcining, coal combustion and gold roasting. This paper describes the invention of the circulating fluid bed and chronicles its development and evolution from calcining through coal combustion to gold roasting. It presents performance data of Lurgi's CFB units in operation and highlights the six gold roasting plants currently operating throughout the world.

The recently completed major modifications and additions to Reserve Mining Company's taconite concentrating process incorporate a totally new control system. Design of the new control scheme is centered on reliability, versatility, centralization, and optimization. The design objectives were achieved through a distributed control system based on a network of independent field located micro-processor based control systems connected to a central control room. Operation of each micro-processor can be interrogated and modified from the central control room by the operator or by either of two computer systems. The two computer systems handle logging, alarming, specialized sequenced controls, and complex process optimization routines.

Cortez Gold Mine (C.G.M.) is located in Lander County, Nevada, approximately 80 miles southwest of Elko, Nevada. It is accessed via Nevada State Highway 306 south from Interstate 80. This operation is a joint venture between Placer Dome U. S. Inc. (60% operator) and Kennecott Corporation (40%). The claims which supply oxide and refractory ore feed to the Cortez milling facility are located in both Lander and Eureka Counties. These include the Cortez and Horse Canyon deposits all operated by C.G.M. Joint Venture. Other deposits outside the C.G.M. claim area include; Fire Creek, Buckhorn, Gold Bar and Tonkin Springs. These deposits all occur along the Battle Mountain/Eureka Trend.

The effect of face resistance on ventilation air leakage through stoppings was measured in a twin development heading. Face resistance was varied by alternately tightening or loosening the face line brattice to change the line brattice leakage. Results indicated that tight brattice lines are necessary to maintain acceptable airflow at the face but result in higher leakage throughout the entire system, reduced overall ventilation efficiency, and higher operating costs. Conversely, a low face resistance which simulated an auxiliary fan/duct system gave reduced stopping leakage losses, higher quantities of air at the last open cross-cut and greater entire system efficiencies

INTRODUCTION The estimation of ore reserves is a process that begins with the earliest exploration stages on a property and continues throughout any subsequent evaluation and exploitation of the deposit. During exploration and preliminary evaluation, the results of these reserve estimates constitute the basic data for prefeasibility studies and economic analysis. The decision to continue exploration and development or to abandon a prospect is often based upon these studies. During the active life of a mine, reserve computations are continuously revised to assist in development planning, cost and efficiency analyses, quality control, and improvement of extraction and processing methods. Accurate reserve estimates are also required when financing a project, purchasing or selling a property, and for accounting purposes such as depletion and tax calculation. It is important to remember that the reliability of ore reserve estimates varies progressively through time as more and more information becomes available. The lowest order of reliability of estimation of reserves exists at the time of discovery. The maximum level of certainty concerning the ore reserves within a deposit is reached when the deposit is completely mined out. Between these two extremes are variable levels of certainty as to the tonnage and grade of the resource. This is particularly true of that portion of the mineral resource that constitutes the "minable reserve," as this portion is dependent upon economic as well as geological and technological factors. In the following discussion, several of the factors affecting ore reserve computation and some of the commonly used methods of calculation are presented. The first part of the discussion is confined to classical methods of hand calculation utilizing level maps and sections. The second part of the discussion presents an overview of somewhat more sophisticated methods of geostatistics which have been developed within recent Years. Geostatistical methods frequently provide the best ore re- serve estimates for many deposits. However, a digital computer is required for such geostatistically derived estimates due to the number and complexity of the cornputations involved. For many properties the classical nongeostatistical methods are adequate, particularly in the early exploration stages. In fact, it is the author's contention that even at those properties where the geostatistical approach is employed for reserve estimation, the geological and engineering staffs should prepare an estimate by traditional means. This provides an internal audit for the reserves and at the same time requires a continuing close appraisal of geologic problems that influence the presently known geostatistically estimated reserves and production at the mine.

In the late 1940's and early 50's in southern Illinois, the usual open pit blasting in the coal field consisted of one or two rows of churn drilled vertical holes being shot with instant electric blasting caps. The entire shot detonated at one rime. In southern Indiana and Ohio most mines were drilling horizontal holes and they too were primed with instant EB caps. During the ten years from 1355 through 1965 many changes occurred in drilling and blasting methods. The churn drill in southern Illinois and the horizontal drill in Indiana and Ohio were replaced by the rotary vertical drill. The ammonia dynamites and liquid oxygen explosives were replaced by ANFO. The elctric blasting cap in the hole was replaced by a detonating cord down line and detonating cord trunk lines made the connections between holes and rows of holes. Host open pit mining was in areas far enough from town that the noise and vibration from blasting was, if not ignored, at least tolerated. During the 1960's open pit mining expanded to account for nearly 50% of the coal produced. Mines came closer to town and towns expanded along the highways with suburban homes and mobile homes. The mines began receiving complaints about the noise and vibrations from blasting operations.

Theoretical Efficiency: actual energy consumed, in a comminution machine compared to the theoretical energy required to make the size reduction. Operating Efficiency: compares the operating work index, calculated from production comminution machinery operating data, to the Bond Work Index from bench scale comminution tests or calculated from pilot plant operating data. Economic Efficiency: income compared to planned income. Using the Bond Work Index and operating work index, this paper explains how to determine operating efficiency.

This paper discusses the actual recovery and installation of a longwall in a bituminous coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. The coal bed mined is in the Lower Freeport seam which averages 42 inches (1.07m) in height locally. Drainage from the mine is approximately 3.5 million gallons of water per day (13.25 million liters per day). This water deteriorates the mines predominately fire clay bottom making it extremely difficult to move equipment. Support removal is accomplished by pulling the 6 ton (5443 kg) shields out under their own hydraulic power and transporting them by track over four miles (6437m) co the next longwall panel. This paper also discusses the changes that will be made to aid in the succeeding longwall recoveries and installations.

For many years the explosives industry was a technological enigma: it was at the 'cutting edge' of some technologies and in the backwaters of others. For example, for at least the past 85 years, the industry routinely measured time to one-millionth of a second for determining the detonation rate of explosives. At the same time, however, formulations were usually hand-written in 'formula books,' such as the alchemists may have done. Also, due to the fact that the equipment had proven to be safe, many of the mixers and packing machines in use until recently were those patented in the 19th century; improving efficiency was not worth the possible risks that might be encountered. In recent years, the wide availability and portability of computers and their adaptation to specialized applications have revolutionized the explosives industry, much as it has many others. With the advent of the water-based emulsions and slurries (water gels), and the necessity to design totally new processing and delivery equipment, the opportunity arose to apply modern techniques to many aspects of the business. Table 1 lists some computer applications currently in use by explosives manufacturers and end users. The use of high-tech production controls, equipment design aids, field measurement devices and other computer applications is so pervasive in the industry today that any brief article such as this must be considered only as a broadbrush overview of the subject.

Environmental protection, economic prosperity and respect of the need for social equity promotion, constitute a prerequisite for any modern industry aiming to operate in a sustainable manner. The Natural Stone industry in Europe, a sector comprising mainly of SMEs, despite the fact that consists a dynamic extraction sector, often lucks the resources to apply novel techniques and management schemes towards achieving sustainable performance. I-STONE, an EU Integrated Project funded by the 6th Framework Programme, is aiming to contribute in the improved performance of the Natural Stone industry. A primary project objective is the re-engineering of the stone production chain, in order among others to considerably in-crease its efficiency and productivity, and minimise the amount of stone wastes disposed. The present paper, resulting from the research con-ducted on environmental management within I-STONE, is focusing on the use of sustainable indicators as a tool for the assessment of the stone industry?s performance. Based on Commission Decisions and reported studies, a list of indicators was selected and used within I-STONE, including environmental and socio-economic indicators. A set of selected environmental indicators were quantified based on operational data of a number of Greek and Portuguese quarries examined as case studies. The analysis indicated that an integrated strategy, including the application of novel operation techniques and equipment, waste minimization and systematic environmental monitoring and reporting, constitute key factors for the sustainable operation of natural stone industry.

Theoretical research, laboratory tests and practical experience confirm the possibility to stabilise the excavated tunnel front by suitably composed slurries even in coarse ground with extremely high permeability. The fluid assures dependable repartition of the pressure, low torque of the cutting wheel and small perturbances of the original ground structure. Very easy access to the front, for tool repair or removal of obstacles, are other features of the WF-Hydroshield concept. For soft ground, the Hydrojet (excavation by immersed slurry jets) permits still further improvements. Field experiences in very mixed face conditions are related. Measured soil subsidences in homogeneous, loose sands above Hydroshield-driven tunnels are compared to calculated values. Dependable shield tail seals, which are a necessary condition for work without compressed air in the tunnel, and an original repair kit are presented. The aim to liberate shield driving from hazards of narrowly defined soil conditions and to broaden the range of applications led to a series of bentonite shield machines, derivated from the initial slurry type, such as Dense Mud Shield, Earth Pressure Balance Shield or shields with hard rock cutterheads. Similar to these constructions, overall stability of the front was the major concern in developing the Hydroshield.
