This report presents a Bureau of Mines evaluation which examined the extent of gas leakage from sealed areas in underground coal mines and measured the effectiveness of commonly used structures for controlling the quantity of gas exchange from these areas. Evaluations were performed on five abandoned areas in two operating underground mines within the same coal seam. Methane and oxygen levels inby the seals were monitored to determine if the gas leakage was unidirectional or bidirectional. Results from this and prior work dealing with minimizing gas leakage were then applied to a newly abandoned area. Also discussed are bulkhead site preparation, construction plans, techniques for monitoring the status of the atmosphere within the sealed volume, and a modified European method for controlling gas migration from the sealed volume to the active mine.

A review is given of the present applications of random sets and integral geometry in fragmentation and liberation models of ores and minerals. Although attempts have been made in the past to apply such mathematical techniques to the comminution of solids, it is shown that it would not result in major progress. In liberation modeling, it is demonstrated that the approach can lead to fruitful results. Following a recent paper by Davy (1984), a model of liberation prediction is developed that can be calibrated for ore texture and breakage using image analyzers. The model is demonstrated for the case of a Poisson polyhedra ore texture and monodisperse fragment size. The model enables prediction of the complete composite particle distribution and thus is valuable for integration of ore breakage models with minerals separation models.

The hydrophobicity of oil shale was found to follow the sequence R-5 > Mahogany >> Eastern. Further, hydrophobicity was found to correlate with the total organic carbon (TOG) content, decreasing with increasing specific gravity of raw oil shale pieces. Differences in hydrophobicity from piece to piece indicate that gravity preconcentration would be much more effective for Western than for Eastern oil shales. Purified kerogen concentrates and low specific gravity fractions (<2.0) of raw Western oil shale samples show critical surface tension of wetting values of [y]c = ~35 mNm -1, and for a kerogen concentrate from an Eastern oil shale [y]c = ~46 mNm-l. This infers that dust from oil shale mining operations can be suppressed by surfactant solutions similar to those used to suppress coal dust.

Development of the Falconbridge Ferronickel Process for treatment of lateritic nickel ores began with laboratory work in 1955, the year the Company commenced exploration of its concession in the Dominican Republic. Process development centred on selective reduction originally directed to producing calcines amenable to ammonia leaching, but later found suited to electric smelting. The reduction step of the process was developed in a 25 tpd shaft furnace pilot plant located in the Dominican Republic, to which was later added an electric melting furnace. After almost 3 years of development work on this scale the plant was expanded to 100 tpd for fixing design data for a commercial plant. This took the form of the 30,000 ton per year Nickel Ferro-nickel Complex of Falconbridge Dominicans, which started up in 1971.

This paper concern the specific adsorption of sulfate anions on nonmetallic minerals and its role in flotation. The specific surface affinity of sulfate ions in various systems has been observed in the results of electrokinetic measurements that show conditions under which sodium sulfate can reverse the sign of the zeta potential. The electrical double layer model provides a means for interpreting the results and for estimating the free energy of adsorption of sulfate ions. Because of their surface activity, sulfate ions not only can function as a depressant in the flotation of oxide minerals with physisorbed anionic collectors but also can function as an activator for flotation with physisorbed cationic collectors. Their role in depressing or enhancing the flotation of the sparingly-soluble mineral barite is also explained in terms of the double layer model.

The Romanian mining industry, especially salt mining, is going through a restructuring phase taking into account the Environment Acquis of the European Union1. In order to preserve the centuries-old salt mines and to develop new ones, in the same salt rock deposit, the long term stability assessment of the saline complex is very important. This case study refers to the Praid salt mine, which includes old salt mines, with impressive sizes, located above the new mines, with activity in progress, in order to provide the means and solutions for efficient conservation and sustainable exploitation for the salt resources. The DKRControl method and FLAC 3D code were used in order to assess the confidence level for the computed prediction of the stability of the salt mine complex salt.

Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential in a multitude of mundane and sophisticated applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts, medicine, and defense applications. The global supply deficit could be attributed to the destabilization of REE market that has, as a result, incentivized indigenous production of REEs. Cost-effective and environmentally benign opportunities are being explored for the production of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources including coal and coal by-products to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Healy coal mine and Wishbone Hill deposits in Alaska have been quantified for REEs and were found to possess elevated total REE concentrations as compared to world average levels (60– 70 ppm). The objective of the study was to concentrate the REEs in the froth phase by froth-flotation of the fine size fraction (< 75 μm). A Box-Behnken design of experiment was employed to ascertain the main and interaction effects of operational parameters on response variable by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Experiments were carried out to maximize REE recovery and concentration by modeling and optimization of three operating variables (frother dosage, pulp density (% solids), and collector dosage). Based on the results, the optimum flotation conditions for maximum recovery at an elevated concentration of REEs in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy sample and 10% solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic relationship between the input and response variable was found to be independent of collector dosage suggesting good surface hydrophobicity and floatability of the two coal samples.

The desire for dry passageways promotes the NATM as it provides a final support system most suitable for the installation of a waterproofing membrane. Waterproofing during construction is a cost effective way to enhance safety and function as well as increasing the life of an underground structure. The NATM approach utilizes the surrounding mass as an integral element of the "ringlike" support system. At the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Lehigh Tunnel No. 2 various rock classifications were determined to require support measures ranging from 2 to 12 inches of shotcrete along with spiling, wire mesh, deformed bar, lattice girders and rock bolts as needed. Field instrumentation and monitoring programmes are a key factor for the success of the NATM. When the support "shell" stabilizes smoothing shotcrete, waterproofing and a final liner can be placed.

Libby, Montana is the site of a large vermiculite deposit that was mined between 1920 and 1990 to extract vermiculite for commercial applications such as insulation, gardening products, and construction materials. The Libby vermiculite deposit also contains amphibole minerals including tremolite, actinolite, richterite, and winchite. Historically, Libby mine workers experienced high exposures to amphibole structures, and, as a group, have experienced the health consequences of those occupational exposures. It has been suggested that Libby residents also have been and continue to be exposed to amphibole structures released during the vermiculite mining operations and therefore are at increased risk for disease. The Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR) conducted two epidemiological-type studies of residents living in Libby and the surrounding areas to assess these risks. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) collected and analyzed exposure data in Libby and used those data to project risks of asbestos-associated disease for Libby residents. The EPA has placed the Libby Asbestos Site, which includes the mine and the town of Libby, on its National Priority List of hazardous waste sites in need of clean up. This article presents a review of the exposure studies conducted in Libby and an analysis of health risks based on the data collected in those studies. Libby mine workers have experienced elevated levels of asbestos-associated disease as a consequence of their occupational exposures to amphibole structures. Libby residents? exposures typically are substantially lower than mine workers? historical exposures, and the health risk projections for residents are, accordingly, substantially lower. © 2007 Published by Elsevier Inc. Employee safety and health is of paramount importance for SME and its members. Many SME members work daily in our Nation&apos;s mines or have a direct impact on others that work in the mines. SME supports the mission and purpose of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), which is to prevent all injuries and disease from mining and to promote safe and healthful workplaces for the Nation&apos;s miners. SME supports the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and university research geared toward prevention of all occupational injuries and illnesses. SME maintains that laws and regulations governing the mining industry need to be based on sound scientific principles to ensure that workplace solutions can be readily implemented and that solutions to safety and health problems are fully realized.

A sampling program was conducted in 2008 to determine the run of mine characteristics of 5 coal seams. The sampling program included size analyses and float sink determinations. The samples were analyzed for ash and mercury concentrations for each size and gravity fraction. This paper will report on the sampling program, the analytical results, and the correlations determined in the data set investigated.

The use of booster fans and restrictions on the locations of ventilation regulators are dealt with in a straightforward manner. This new approach is based on a common Operations Research algorithm for which there are many fast computer programs available.

The romance of the River lives on in the tales of Mark Twain; and many Americans still think of the Mississippi River in terms of the steamboats loaded with passengers, gamblers and cotton. Yet for many years, coal has been a major cargo on the American waterways. Currently, about 100 million tons a year of coal is handled in some part of its journey from mine to destination by barge. The bulk of this traffic has been on the Ohio River System and the Upper Mississippi River System in years past. Now we have a new entry. Over the past 10 years various movements of coal have developed down the Mississippi River to power plants at Memphis and along the Gulf Coast, and a small amount of metallurgical coal has moved down the Mississippi River for export to Japan since 1970. But in 1980 a brand new player came on the scene. 1980 was a momentous year for the American coal business. Historically, we have exported about 50 million tons a year of metallurgical coal to the world&apos;s steel mills. Just before and after World War I, we also had a fairly healthy export trade in steam coal; and again in the late forties, we supplied large amounts of coal to Europe until domestic production could recover from the ravages of World War II. But since the early fifties, the name of the export game has been metallurgical coal. Starting in the mid seventies, something began that was almost totally missed by the American coal industry; and that was the growth in the use of coal first in Europe and now in the Far East as a steam product and as an alternative to petroleum products. As these world coal markets began increasing, the U.S. at first was thought to be noncompetitive because ocean rates were still very low. For example, as recently as 1977, Australian coal could be moved all the way from Australia to the Gulf Coast for $12.50 per metric ton. Coal exporting countries were Poland, Australia and South Africa, except for the continuing exports of U.S. high quality metallurgical coal. But then came the second oil shock, and all of the sudden that $12.50 rate from Australia to the U.S. Gulf became $25.00. And then suddenly and almost unrecognized by the American industry, American coal was in fact competitive at overseas destinations because of the drastic change in trade patterns brought on by the doubling and tripling and quadrupling of bunker fuel prices for ships.

The People&apos;s Republic of China has abundant coal resources with proven reserves amounting to 582 Gt (641 billion st). Recognizing coal as a major energy source on which to build the country&apos;s industrial and economic base, there has been a rapid increase in production since the founding of the People&apos;s Republic. In 1949, only 29.4 Mt (32.4 million st) of coal was mined. Production has increased to 576.5 Mt (635.5 million st), exclusive of Taiwan, at present, making China the third largest coal producing country in the world. Plans call for a 4-5% increase in annual production for the next 20 years. Coal constitutes 70% of the primary energy consumption in China. The remaining 30% is divided between petroleum and natural gas with 26% and hydropower with 4%. Coal use and consumption is divided as follows. General industrial use comprised 48.9%, power generation uses 20.1%, and coking accounts for 10.5% (6.3% for metallurgy and 4.2% for chemical industry). Domestic use such as home heating and cooking makes up 17.8% and coal-fired steam engines for railways uses 4.7%. Coal Districts Coal underlies about 1/18 of China&apos;s land area. It occurs in 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. In addition, the western interior region, which has not been explored, may contain sizable reserves. Based on geology, geography, and administration, the coal fields can be grouped into five districts as shown in Fig. 1. The north China district, the heart of the industrial base for the country, has the most extensive and largest deposits of the five districts. This amounts to almost 40% of the country&apos;s total reserves. The largest coal basin with proven reserves of 181.4 Gt (200 billion st) and the most exploitable seams is located some 300 km (186 miles) southwest of Beijing (Peking) in Shanxi Province. Centered around Taiyuan, the compound field extends from Datong in the north to Xian in the south. Its western extension is not known fully. The Northwest and Northeast districts contain the second and third largest deposits. The biggest coal field in South China is located in the Sichuan and Guizhou Provinces near Chongqing. At present, it is not known if sizable coal measures exist in the Tibetan district. Coal Types China&apos;s coal varies widely both in age and rank. "Public engagement is increasingly important in ensuring the success of projects related to energy development, particularly with regard to issues of environmental protection, public health, and socio-economic impacts. This is due to concurrent trends in public behavior, including a rise in public interest in these projects that is not matched by a rise in science literacy, and increasing organization and participation of the public through social media, citizen science, and grassroots initiatives. In recent years, several high-profile incidents have demonstrated that when public concern is ignored or met with a passive response from industry, it can rapidly grow into organized opposition that negatively impacts or wholly derails a project. Engaging, listening to, and educating stakeholders during early planning and development phases are therefore essential to earning credibility and trust. Moreover, maintaining two-way lines of communication throughout the lifespan of a project demonstrates social responsibility and facilitates cooperation, acceptance, and even support from communities and others. Positive experiences with specific projects at a local, community level can influence the larger public opinion of an entire industry sector. This paper presents cases studies of public engagement related to shale gas development (including hydraulic fracturing and pipeline construction), mountaintop removal mining, and management of mixed-use watersheds near surface mining operations. The experiences highlighted in these case studies are used to draw best practices of public engagement for sustainable energy development.Introduction Within the scientific research community, the importance of public engagement has gained increasing recognition. In a 2007 article in Nature, medical researcher, Patrick Taylor, stated that public engagement has both “gone viral” and “gone global” and has the ability to make real impacts to research (Taylor 2007). Nancy Baron, the science outreach director for COMPASS, an organization providing communications training for scientists, provides further evidence for the increasing focus on engagement, including shifting attitudes observed during her own experience as a communications coach and documented in surveys, the recent inclusion of communication and engagement activities in academic tenure review, and the surge of workshops, materials, and other resources available on the subject (Baron 2016). In addition to COMPASS, a number of organizations and institutes have been developed to train scientists for communication and engagement with the public, perhaps most notably the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University, and academic fellowship programs, such as the Leopold Leadership Program at Stanford University and the Wilburforce Fellowship Program, have been established for the same purpose."

INTRODUCTION The past few years has seen an increased interest in the determination of statistically valid properties of a rock mass. The increased use of computer modelling for the study of rock excavation behaviour has created a need for upper and lower statistical bounds for the properties of a rock mass being modelled. Obviously, to determine the statistical properties of a large volume of rock, many samples must be tested - an expensive proposition when using conventional testing facilities and procedures. As a result of high costs per sample, sufficient tests for statistically valid results are rarely done. In an effort to reduce both sample preparation and test facility costs, an instrument called the Bemek Advanced Rock Tester (BRT) was developed in Sweden. With a total weight of approx. 35 kg, the BRT is portable and sells at a small fraction of the cost of a conventional testing machine. It is comprised of a small 65 KN loading frame with attachments for a variety of tests (see Table 1) , a hand operated hydraulic pump, an electronic balancing unit and a programmable microprocessor. The microprocessor is capable of storing data, performing arithmetic operation on, and printing signals from, a transducer and two strain gauges. A detailed description of the apparatus is given by G. Swan et al. (1). The proposed test strategy involves first a 3-point flexure test on a notched core specimen, followed by a 4-point flexure test on the separated specimen halves. Finally, point load and Brazilian tests can be carried out on the quarter parts of the original specimen. Thus specimen preparation is kept to a minimum. These and other perceived advantages have prompted the purchase of this machine and an evaluation of its suitability to provide data on mechanical properties of intact rock for numerical modelling and rock mechanics design at Noranda&apos;s underground mines. Details of its performance evaluation and experiences with the unit are discussed in the following sections. [ ] INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE During the commissioning stage the BRT had, or developed, a series of problems, some of which seriously affected its operation. Below are some examples. Poor documentation was the most serious problem encountered. Confusing instructions for the 4-point bend test installation and its microprocessor programing, as well as poor and ambiguous information on the calculation of gauge factors, are some of the difficulties which had to be overcome. Meehan~cal problems occurred, including failure of the hydraulic pump, as well as electronic difficulties with the microprocessor. Other problems with the printer, requiring its replaceqent, were fortunately covered under warranty.

The Sobek humidity cell has been in use with minor modification for more than 30 years to determine bulk primary-mineral reaction rates. As a result, it has become a key tool for predicting the bulk rate of sulphide oxidation, the Carbonate Mole Ratio (CMR) of neutralization-potential (NP) consumption to sulphide oxidation, and the rates of metal leaching. Most humidity cells are operated for less than a year, with the resulting rates extrapolated into the future for years or decades. The validity of these extrapolations was tested by examining longer trends from cells that have operated for three to seven years, as found in the International Kinetic Database (IKD). Additionally, large batches of cells for two minesites in the IKD (45 and 46 cells each) were examined to determine if regular, predictable trends were obtained across ranges of geochemistry at a minesite. The long-term cells show that the rates of sulphide oxidation and acid generation, based on sulphate production, have a 50% chance of stabilizing within one year, with the remainder fluctuating significantly throughout their test periods. Despite the fluctuations, the CMR, which is critical for defining site-specific or rock-unit-specific ABA criteria, remains relatively steady in many cases between 1.0 and 2.0 as expected from principles of aqueous geochemistry. However, if the sulphate-production rate falls below 10-30 mg/kg/wk, the CMR value can increase significantly. At and below these low rates, physical factors like flow rates of surface waters and groundwaters will determine the rate of NP consumption, rather than geochemical factors. Also, if weekly rinse pH falls to acidic values, the CMR will decrease below 1 .O, reflecting the exhaustion of fast- neutralizing minerals. The two batches of multiple cells also confirm these trends across arange of geochemistry. The long-term cells show that copper leaching often stabilizes within a narrow range as long as rinse pH remains relatively constant. Also, there is no strong dependence of leaching on the sulphate rate. However, the rate of copper production often increases sharply if rinse pH falls to acidic values. This suggests the measured copper-production rate in some cases is not a true primary rate, but a lower secondary rate after secondary- mineral precipitation within Sobek cells. As with the long-term cells, the batches of multiple cells show that copper production often increases gradually with decreasing rinse pH, with no clear dependence on sulphate production. However, high rates can also occur at near-neutral pH, so secondary-mineral precipitation of copper is not necessarily common.

The purpose of this paper is to present validation studies of the mine-fire simulator using data gathered from an actual mine fire which occurred in November 1991 at the Pattiki Mine. This study evaluates the suitability of the computer software package for modeling underground fires. The paper also discusses the importance of the on-line monitoring system for the validation process.
