Silicosis among metal miners is an ancient disease, probably as old as mining itself.' However, the primitive forms of mining were not productive of much silica dust, and the short life span of slaves used in mining probably precluded the development of more than a few sporadic cases of silicosis. Early diagnostic terms of miners' asthma and miners' phthisis suggested an occupational relationship and a tubercular component, but little attention was given to silicbsis until the turn of this century when epidemics of silico-tuberculosis arose due to the great expansion of the mining industry in the United States, especially silver and gold mining. The expansion was accompanied by mechanization and the introduction of pneumatic tools, which generated increasing amounts of fine silica dust. Mining communities were crowded and hygiene was poor.' The tubercle bacillus would probably have flourished even without the predisposition of silicosis.' As is so often the case in occupational health, biostatistical analyses first called attention to the problem, and environmental-medical studies later confirmed its existence. The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine is currently one of the deepest block cave mines in the world. The rock mass is heavily veined with little to no joints and faults are usually healed cohesive structures leading to difficult cave mining conditions. The caving process is improved if the rock mass contains fractures with sufficient density that it will cave by gravity as undercutting progresses. Hydraulic fracturing (HF) has been used to create fractures around the cave to improve mining. A seismic monitoring system has been used in DMLZ since the start of mining. Therefore, the seismic activities before, during and after HF can be monitored. Shear wave splitting is a process used to study the impacts of HF on the rock mass. This process involves the measurement of travel times from splitting shear waves after seismic events and using this to define the anisotropy within the rock mass and subsequently fracture density. This paper sets out the methodology for carrying out the interpretation of the shear wave splitting process using seismic data from the fracked cave crown and abutments along with an overview of the benefits to cave mining as result.

"The Eglinton-Crosstown Light Rail Transit line is a 19-kilometre corridor with a 10-kilometre underground portion currently being constructed by Metrolinx in Toronto through a densely populated urban environment. Tunneling works are being completed through two separate design-bid-build contracts that include consideration for a phased handover to a follow on contractor who will take ownership of the tunnels, including warranties, and will complete the stations and remainder of the system through a PPP delivery model including maintenance of the system for 30 years. Warranty provisions, settlement apportionment, tunnel leakage, potential delays and conflicts between contractors are just some of the risks the team managing tunnel contract integration had to consider when developing the PPP contract. This paper will present an overview of how these risks were assessed and allocated through the contracts and the strategies adopted to minimize risks to Metrolinx while ensuring successful procurement was maintained. INTRODUCTION The Big Move is a 25 year, $50 billion ($-CAD) plan for coordinated and integrated transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) in Ontario, Canada. This plan has been initiated by Metrolinx, a division of the provincial government of Ontario, and its vision, goals and objectives are rooted in creating a high quality of life; a thriving, sustainable and protected environment; and a strong, prosperous and competitive economy for the GTHA. The Big Move will triple the length of rapid transit service in the GTHA to 1,725km, significantly increase the percentage of the GTHA population living within two kilometers of rapid transit, reduce commute times to an average of 77 minutes per person per day and decrease greenhouse gas emissions from passenger transportation per person by 29%. Work is currently underway on several projects and more than $16 billion ($-CAD) of the planned investment has already been committed. A key project that forms part of this commitment is the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project which is being delivered in the City of Toronto under Metrolinx’s Rapid Transit (RT) Program. This complex and sizeable undertaking has been broken into a number of separate contracts comprising: LRT Vehicles contract; Eglinton West Tunnels Project; Eglinton East Tunnels Project; and a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) contract to complete the underground stations, at-grade stops, all rail infrastructure and systems and to maintain the entire system for 30 years. The PPP contract, which includes an initial capital portion of approx. $5.1 billion ($-CAD), has recently been awarded to Crosslinx Transit Solutions, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) consortium comprised of SNC Lavalin, Aecon, Dragados and EllisDon."

"Mine refuge shelters are designed to protect mine workers from hazardous environmental conditions after a mine disaster, but high temperature and humidity levels inside these shelters may pose a significant safety risk. Due to the safety risks associated with human testing, detailed thermal models of shelters and human occupants have been developed using TAITherm simulation software. These models are used to predict the temperature and humidity within the shelter resulting from metabolic heating, evaporation due to sweat and respiration, moisture and heat from the shelter’s carbon dioxide scrubbing system, and heat transfer within the shelter. A detailed human thermoregulation model simulates the sensible and latent heat generated by the shelter occupants, and predicts the occupant’s body core temperature and moisture lost due to sweating and respiration. This information is used to assess the safety of the shelter. This paper presents the technical details of the human thermal model, validation comparing the human model to human subject test data, and results of a mine shelter analysis. IntroductionPortable mine refuge chambers are used in U.S. coal mines to provide protection to mine workers from hazardous conditions following a traumatic event. Although these shelters are designed to supply clean air and sustenance for up to 96 hours, prolonged exposure to the mine shelter environment itself can pose a substantial risk to human safety. Heat generated by the shelter occupants combined with heat from the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system can raise the shelter interior temperatures and relative humidity to dangerous levels that can lead to heat stress in humans. Unfortunately, the thermal burden associated with mine shelter exposure is not well characterized due to potential hazards associated with underground human subject testing. In order to assess the thermal burden on people within a mine shelter environment, a detailed thermal model was created to accurately predict the temperatures and humidity levels within the shelter, and the impact of these environmental conditions on human occupants. The model consists of a mobile inflatable tent-type mine shelter with 23 humans, and includes the surrounding mine environment. The thermal simulations were performed using a validated commercial heat transfer prediction computer software. Additionally, a module of the software provided the capability to simultaneously model the thermophysiology of 23 unique humans contained within the mine shelter. The human thermal models accounted for the thermal interaction with the environment and provided a core temperature response prediction that can be used to evaluate survivability in heat stress situations (U.S. Army, 2003). The models can also be used to determine maximum occupancy in order to maintain safe temperature and humidity levels inside the shelter in specific mine environments, to optimize shelter size for maximum heat dissipation, or to simulate active cooling systems."

The disposal of the phosphate slimes produced by Florida beneficiation operations is perhaps the biggest single problem of the phosphate mining industry. This is an old problem which has not been solved and which is becoming increasingly severe. In a typical phosphate mining operation, the phosphate rock mined is initmately mixed with sand and clay, constituting what is known as matrix. During the beneficiation, the clay and other fine materials are separated usually at -150 mesh, and washed from the phosphate rock in a form of diluted slurry known as phosphate slimes. The quantity of slimes solids and their composition vary considerably with the location but usually represent from 25 to 35% of the ore mined. Because of the affinity that clays have for water, large volumes of water are required to separate the granular material in the matrix forming a dilute slime suspension (1.5 to 3% solids) of colloidal material, which settles very slowly, and thus requires immense impounding areas, which never becomes totally usable land. Cyanide leaching is the most common process employed in the majority of the gold extraction plants. These gold extraction plants naturally generate tailings and/or effluents that contain highly toxic cyanides, In geographic locations with excess precipitation and therefore net positive water balance, a portion of these tailings must be discharged. Before these highly toxic cyanide-containing effluents can be discharged to the waterways, cyanide and any other toxic substance must be destroyed. Geographic locations with high evaporation and low precipitation, as in the western USA, result in net negative water balance and therefore these plants can operate with a zero discharge option. However, with the current stringent environ­mental regulations and concerns for bird and wildlife mortality, even these operations may be required to partially treat their tailings to preclude potential harm to wildlife. Furthermore, heap leach opera­tions are now generally required to detoxify the heaps before abandonment. It is, there­fore, apparent that all gold extraction plants may be required to install some form of effluent treatment in order to achieve the above objectives,.

Waste treatment in the mining industry is by no means a new problem to this field. In a sense, the entire process from ore to finished product is one of waste treatment - the separation of a relatively minor quantity of desired component from valueless material. Where it has been necess-ary or economical to practice conventional waste treatment or pollution control methods, such as dust collection, water recovery from tailings, or impounding of residues for future treatment, this has been done. Generally the containment of hazardous pollutants such as arsenic and cyanide also has been followed in modern times. But it is only recently, with the public outcry for the elimination of all forms of pollution, "that the industry has been forced to solve what often appears to be a myriad of difficult and costly waste treatment problems, or be faced with the alternative of closing down the operation. It is the objective of this paper to describe new as well as conventional approaches to these problems, specifically as might be applicable to liquid-solids separation methods. Host wastes in the industry are present either as solutions or slurries, or can be most advantageously handled by conversion to this form, such as in scrubbing noxious gases and dusts with water. Separation of the solids and purification of the aqueous effluents are, therefore, often the principle problems.

Investigation of mined land characteristics, evaluation of irrigation systems and evaluations by the mining industry determined that irrigation is a feasible method for aiding the revegetation of coal mined lands in the western arid and semi-arid regions (Sherman, et al. 1980). The various regions studied displayed a commonality of characteristics which enables, independent of the site or region, the recommendation of solid-set irrigation. Irrigation should be supplemental by complimenting natural precipitation and should be implemented on a temporary basis. For germination, the vegetation requires application of small amounts of water in a gentle, frequent, and timely manner. For the establishment phase of growth, moisture should be applied and stored in the soil either through pre-irrigation or deep irrigation.

While not well established, there is evidence that the mining industry is encumbered by several work-related fatigue risk factors. Compared to other industries, mine workers are more likely to report inadequate sleep and work longer hours per day. Given these observations, there is a critical need to identify effective ways to intervene, manage, and mitigate mine worker fatigue and sleepiness when present. One barrier to this is confusion around the similarities and differences between fatigue and sleepiness, which can result in these terms being treated as interchangeable regardless of context and make it difficult to assess and mitigate safety risk.

Coal is a low-cost and high-calorific-value fuel. The coal mining industry worldwide has been suffering from severe accidents due to coal dust explosion hazards since its inception. Statistically, it was observed that 12,489 fatalities had occurred in 104 reported mining accidents from coal dust explosions during 1900–2020. There are numerous methods for detection, prevention, and control of coal dust explosions in mines. The underground mining environment is unpredictable and has an array of variables. These undulating factors make it difficult to prevent or control the coal dust explosion hazard. However, coal mining is done aggressively throughout the world, especially in developing countries as coal is a major source of thermal energy used in power plants contributing to about 38% (IEA, (2019), World Energy Outlook, IEA, Paris https:// www. iea. org/ repor ts/ world- energy- outlo ok- 2019.) of world electricity. Worldwide, coal dust explosibility studies are carried out in experimental mines, laboratories, and simulations. The complexity, lack of proper infrastructure, and unavailability of laboratory equipment sometimes make it difficult to study coal dust explosibility. The authors have discussed in detail and proposed that the CFD modelling can be a viable option for studying and evaluating coal dust explosibility.

Selenium is widely present in the environment at usually low concentration. It is mostly present in the environment at higher oxidation states, i.e., as selenites and selenates (+4 and +6 oxidation states respectively). It is rarely present as selenides (-2 oxidation state) and almost never found as the element (0 oxidation state). Selenites and selenates are generally soluble in water, as such they cannot easily be removed from water by precipitation. Selenites can form insoluble surface complexes with metal oxides such as ferric hydrous oxide and manganese hydroxide, and can therefore be removed that way. However, it is not so common to find selenites in natural environments as it will quickly oxidize to selenate in aerobic conditions. Elemental selenium can also be produced from selenites or selenates by using a reduction process; the end product is a colloid that can be destabilized to be removed from water using the right chemistry. Because of their toxicity, selenides need to be handled with care, and if present, it can form insoluble metal salts or, at low pH, be emitted as H2Se, a noxious and highly toxic gas. The most favorable selenium forms for its removal are therefore selenite and elemental selenium. Organo-selenium species play a crucial part in understanding selenium toxicity. There are a great number of these species. Basically, any organic species that contains sulfur has an equivalent that contains selenium. Of particular interest is the substitution of sulfur by selenium in the two sulfur-bearing amino acids, cysteine and methionine, resulting in selenocysteine and selenomethionine. Methylseleninic acid (CH3SeO2H) is another organo-selenium specie which has been detected in water treated by biological processes and which is biologically active.

Historically, boulders are a frequent source of problem in soft ground tunneling. It is important to attempt to make an assessment of the nature and quantity of the boulders, although in many cases, it will be impossible to do so with great accuracy. Boulders, can pose major problems for TBMs in terms of slowing down or halting the tunnel advance, cutter damage, and abrasive wear. Although proper selection of the TBM and the cutterhead can reduce the risks, ground uncertainties still cannot be eliminated. The paper reviews a case study of a 3480 mm diameter EPB-TBM in Toronto utilized for completion of 2.5 km tunnel in Glacial Till, crossing the CP railway, HWY 401, a creek, and a confined aquifer. Alignment consists of multiple horizontal curves including small radius curves (r=210 m) at shafts breakthrough. An unexpected boulder cluster lead the contractor to experience extreme damages to the screw conveyor, RFJ system and causing a crack in main motor plate which resulted in losing one of the six main motors. This paper reviews contractor’s solutions and includes discussion on specific claim resolution method used in this project that can be of great value in preparation of specification and GBR for similar projects.

Normal dodecyl mercaptan was evaluated as a collector for flotation of sulfide minerals and precious metals. The reagent is from the class of normal mercaptoalkanes (n-alkyl thiols), and is commercially available in the form of a mixture of n-dodecyl mercaptan and a dispersant, under the trade name Pennfloat(TM)3. Reported are results of bench-scale flotation experiments on many commercially treated base metal and precious metal sulfide ores. Dosages, points of addition, and flotation pH were among the uariables studied. Most notable results were increased copper, molybdenum, and precious metals recoveries. Dosages of dodecyl mercaptan on some ores were considerably lower than required for conventional collectors.

Conveyor systems persist in being a source of injuries and fatalities in the mining industry. To reduce these incidents, better methods are needed to enhance the monitoring of probable hazards and improve situational awareness during the normal operation and maintenance of conveyor systems. To address these issues, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) continue to investigate emerging technologies that show the potential to improve miner safety around conveyors. This paper presents a feasibility assessment by NIOSH researchers of a fully integrated, commercially available wireless Internet of Things (IoT) system to improve situational awareness around conveyor systems.

A bewildering number of continuous thickeners and clarifiers are used in mineral industries and other heavy industries. General types are: 1. Conventional Thickeners (Fig. 1). 2. Thickeners with Flocculating Feedwells (Fig. 2). 3. Solids Contactors (Fig. 2). 4. Tray Thickeners (Fig. 3). 5. Lamellas (Fig. 4). 6. Conventional Thickeners with Lamellas 7. High Flow, Fluid Bed Thickeners (Fig. 5). These units must be adapted to varied applications. They must provide operating flexibility to meet process needs. Such factors multiply the decisions which must be made prior to the selection of a thickener. The seven types of thickeners listed above, with their variations, share design concepts which limit their application and which can be used to evaluate their performance. Some of these are listed: 1. Feed velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 2. Natural or reagent flocculation is necessary. 3. Horizontal settling area is the basis for capacity. 4. Overflow velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 5. A controlled underflow is necessary. Applying these needs to the basic process concepts is thickener selection. The basic function of a thickener in the minerals industry is the separation of a thickened sludge containing fine solids from water. "INTRODUCTION Mining activities must be safe and profitable. These two requirements influence each other. The purchase and implementation of safety improvements costs money. Injuries and illnesses at mines stop or delay production and may result in additional costs or a loss of profit. Other effects of injuries and illnesses include the negative influence on employee morale, corporate reputation and conflicts with contract partners. Based on this researchers asked the question: are mines with lower rates of injuries and illnesses more profitable than mines with a higher frequencies? One aspect of this research is the evaluation of the safety situation and the measurement of benefits of safety improvements in the German mining industry. In the following paper, this part of the research will be examined. The main aim is the evaluation of injury rates in different German mining sectors and regions in Germany. SELECTION OF GERMAN MINING OPERATIONS The research team decided to focus the study on the salt and potash and the aggregate and industrial minerals mining industries in Germany. These two mining industries are different in the number and size of operators, structure of the industry, pricing and markets. The selection of two different industries adds to the clarity of the evaluation. Salt and potash mining industry The German salt and potash industry is primarily located central Germany. All salt and potash mines in Germany are underground operations. In 2015, the German potash industry employed 8,100 employees and generated a total revenue of 2 billion Euros. German potash reserves include magnesium compounds like kieserite (MgSO4·H2O), in addition to sylvite (KCl) and carnallite (KMgCl3·6(H2O)). The German salt industry employed 2,300 people in 2015 and generated revenue of 800 million Euros (Krueger, 2015) There are seven mining companies with salt and potash operations: esco-european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, K + S Kali GmbH, Saline Luisenhall GmbH, GSES Glückauf Sondershausen Entwicklungs- und Sicherungs-gesellschaft GmbH, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG, Wacker Chemie AG and Südsalz GmbH. In this way, esco – european salt company GmbH & Co. KG is an affiliated company. Esco was founded as a joint venture of K + S and Solvay in 2002, since 2004 K + S is the sole holder (esco - european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, 2016). Likewise, the Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG has a controlling interest in Südsalz GmbH (Südsalz GmbH, 2016). Aggregate and industrial minerals mining industry The aggregate mining industry in Germany is comprised of many small mining operations and relevant companies. According to the German Department of Economics (BMWi, 2015), the following industrial materials are classified as aggregates: fluorite, barite, kaolin, quartz and quartz sand, quartzite, silica, loamy and foundry sand, pegmatite sand, shale, clay, bentonite, schistose, limestone and dolomite, gypsum and anhydrite, basaltic lava and lava sand, gravel and split, pebble and silicic sand and peat."

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. It is also a major exporter of minerals. Canadian open pits are highly mechanized and use state of the art equipment and support technology. During the past few years significant productivity improvements have been achieved by taking advantage of larger equipment; in pit crushing and conveying; truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. The most recent developments in Canadian Open-pit Mining are related to hydraulic transportation and the application of Global Positioning Systems. Mine planning is computerized; environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning; equipment modifications are pursued with vigor to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian North.

The 16-to-1 milling operation is Sunshine Mining Company's first new silver and gold producing facility. The 16-to-1 underground mine and mill are located approximately 64 km (40 miles) southwest of Tonopah, Nevada. Ore re- serves in the epithermal vein deposit are estimated at 0.91 Mt (one million st) of ore, at an average silver grade of 206 to 240 g/t (6 to 7 oz/st) and an average gold grade of 1.2 g/t (0.035 oz/st). The underground mine uses a large diameter blasthole stoping system of mining using highly mechanized rubber-tired equipment. The mill uses conventional cyanide leaching with countercurrent decantation and Merrill-Crowe precipitation. The mill start-up was in February 1982 resulting in the first pour of dore' in March 1982. The mill's present annual production is approximately 31.1 t (1.0 million oz) of silver and 264 kg (8500 oz) of gold.
