In order to simulate a grinding circuit, it is necessary to obtain valid mathematical models of the grinding mills and classifiers in the circuit. Several models of grinding mills Ova been proposed 1,2,3 and models of cyclone classifiers are available 4,5. Those models developed by Lynch et. al. 3,5 have been tested in the plant, so that some degree of reliability can be placed on them. Because of this, it is reasonable to assume that the Lynch models will apply for a given circuit, and then to test this assumption. Empirical modifications are made as necessary for a given situation. Usually, valid simulation models can be modified slightly to provide control models6,7. The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of an approach taken by Mular8 to obtain the Lynch models of parallel cyclone classifiers being used in the A-circuit of the new Strathcona Mill***.This was one of the projects undertaken by the fourth year Metallurgical Engineering Class of 1969, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, as part of their process design course which cooperates closely with the Canadian metallurgical industry.

The passage of an ore pulp through the froth flotation process results in the production, after dewatering, of a finely divided concentrate. This intermediate product Trust be handled to the subsequent process facilities via belt or other types of conveyors, hoppers, bins, chutes and feeders, and the like, Flotation concentrate has some difficult handling properties such as abrasiveness, sluggishness when moist, or fluidity when dry, These characteristics require the judicious selection or design of handling, equipment and the careful engineering of transfer chutes. It is to the special problems which are encountered in this in-plant handling procedure that this paper is addressed. The methods which will be discussed have beer. developed primarily for the handling of the froth flotation concentrates of copper, leap, and taconite iron ores, but may be generalized, with appropriate modifications, to apply to other similar metallic concentrate&. The controlled feeding of concentrates frog: bins and hoppers is covered alone with some of the techniques used to transfer concentrates from ore belt conveyor to another. Methods are described for unloading belt conveyors into bins or storage tiles, The reclamation from storage piles is also treated.

This paper addresses the impact of declining world rutile resources upon the production of titanium products and their asso¬ciated costs. Titanium is used primarily for the production of pigments; in its metal form it is considered a strategic and critical material to the U.S. defense and aerospace industries. There are two major mineral sources for titanium: ilmenite and rutile. Both these mineral types can be used to produce titanium pigments. Only high grade titanium concentrates, such as rutile, high-grade ilmenite, and synthetic rutile (which is produced through further processing of ilmenite), can be used in the production of titanium metal. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability Program appraisal that evaluated the international availability of titanium from market economy countries. The paper will show that production from economic rutile mines will decline sometime after the turn of the century and that rutile shortages could be alleviated by production from other high-grade titanium resources such as higher cost rutile deposits and anatase deposits, or through an increase in world synthetic rutile capacity.

Lignite reserves occur all over the world in different climatic regions. This means, that the impact of the hydrologic regime upon mining activities and, vice versa, of the mining activities upon ground and surface water conditions will be different between any two mines. On the other hand, most economically important lignite deposits can be grouped according to principal depositional and structural features described briefly in the following section. These features do allow a preliminary assessments of the nature of ground water problems which may face the mine. The cost of protection against water which threatens a mine, the environmental impact of the appropriate measures to achieve this end and the restraints of population density which both might exclude the most cost-effective approach will govern the project expenditure for drainage work. Whether or not this expenditure can be borne by the project must be established during the feasi¬bility phases of mine planning. So, the somewhat provoking title of this paper does not mean that its question can be answered once for ever. It should rather serve to bring to the attention of the audience the major features of mine water control.

Geological and hydrological conditions in the strata overlying the Salado Formation vary considerably in the Carlsbad, New Mexico area. The first four shafts sunk at international Minerals and Chemical Corporation's property have been located in competent and essentially dry conditions, while other shafts on adjacent properties have had such adverse conditions that ground freezing has been chosen as the water and ground control technique for shaft sinking. At the location of the IMC No. 5 Shaft there has been extensive-erosion and salt dissolution in the Rustler Formation which has led to collapse of some zones of the strata. Both ground freezing and pregrouting were considered as alternative methods of stabilizing the extremely poor ground conditions and controlling the potentially very heavy water inflows it was decided that pregrouting the shaft was feasible and would offer substantial cost and time saving over a ground freezing technique. This paper describes the pregrouting techniques used and illustrates the requirement for flexibility in a grouting program so that it can be codified to reflect any new or additional information which is obtained during the progress of the grouting.

The flotation separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is investigated with chelating agents and neutral oil as synergic collectors. Test results indicated that a-nitroso-ß-naphthol has a strong collectivity for wolframite and selectivity against fluorite and quartz. The 8-hydroxyquinoline has collectivity and selectivity also. They both have a better activity than sodium oleate. However, the cupferron is slightly inferior. The synergism of chelating agents and neutral oil looks promising, especially for fine wolframite particles. The activation effect of Fe2+ and Ca2+ ions on separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is slight. The UV absorb-spectra measurements showed that the adsorption of chelating agent on wolframite is multilayer, and flotation behavior is related to chemisorption. The chelating agent which bonds to Fe and Mn sits on the wolframite surface, and the reaction between Mn2+ ion with collector is more significant. The essentials affecting reagent activities are the bonding factor and the hydrophobic factor. These factors are discussed by structure-activity relationship theory. The synergism of neutral oil is a secondary collector likely to lengthen the hydrocarbon chain of chelating agents.

The molecular structures of isobutyl xanthate (IBX), diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), O-isobutyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IBETC), O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thionocarbamate (IBECTC) and O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thiourea (IBECTU) were fully optimized using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level with the integral equation formalism for the polarizable continuum model (IEF-PCM) in the aqueous phases. The effects of the polar groups in these thiol molecules on their collecting performances were determined by the energies and compositions of frontier molecular orbitals and the atomic charge values. Our results indicate that the sulfur atom(s) in IBX, DIBDTP, IBETC, IBECTC, or IBECTU molecule is the centre of reactivity. And the collecting abilities of these reagents for copper sulfide minerals follow the order as: IBX > IBECTU ? DIBDTP ? IBECTC > IBETC, and the order of their selectivities against pyrite is suggested as: IBX < DIBDTP < IBETC < IBECTU < IBECTC. The theoretical analysis provides an insight into the collecting powers of these collectors, and offers an atomic scale approach to understand the experimental data available in the literature. In the early 1970s, it became a concern that exposure to the mineral fibers associated taconite ore processed in Silver Bay, Minnesota would cause asbestos-related disease including gastrointestinal cancer. At that time data gaps existed which have now been significantly reduced by further research. To further our understanding of the types of airborne fibers in Silver Bay we undertook a geological survey of their source the Peter Mitchell Pit, and found that there are no primary asbestos minerals at a detectable level. However we identified two non-asbestos types of fibrous minerals in very limited geological locales. Air sampling useful for risk assessment was done to determine the type, concentrations and size distribution of the population of airborne fibers around Silver Bay. Approximately 80% of the airborne fibers have elemental compositions consistent with cummingtonite-grunerite and the remaining 20% have elemental compositions in the tremolite-actinolite series. The mean airborne concentration of both fiber types is less than 0.00014 fibers per milliliter that is within the background level reported by the World Health Organization. We calculate the risk of asbestos-related mesothelioma and lung cancer using a variety of different pessimistic assumptions. (i) that all the non-asbestos fibers are as potent as asbestos fibers used in the EPA-IRIS listing for asbestos; with a calculated risk of asbestos-related cancer for environmental exposure at Silver Bay of 1 excess cancer in 28,500 lifetimes (or 35 excess cancers per 1,000,000 lifetimes) and secondly that taconite associated fibers are as potent as chrysotile the least potent form of asbestos. The calculated risk is less than 0.77 excess cancer case in 1,000,000 lifetimes. Finally, we briefly review the epidemiology studies of grunerite asbestos (amosite) focusing on the exposure conditions associated with increased risk of human mesothelioma. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. The use of belt air as an intake source at longwall operations has greatly changed over the past decades. The practical considerations for the use of belt air are controlled by a variety of factors including airflow quantity and velocity, coal methane content, methane desorption rates, coal mining rate, belt length, stopping leakage, and the number of gateroad entries. At longwall operations, the advantages and disadvantages of belt air are different for gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. During gateroad development, the use of belt air to ventilate the working section will reduce the leakage from the intake to the belt compared to the belt air being ventilated outby the working sections because of lower pressure differentials. A greater quantity of airflow will reach the last open crosscut with belt on intake than outby, given the same amount of pressure and airflow available at the mouth of the section. This paper will investigate the current ventilation practices regarding the use of belt air during gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. Operating considerations regarding air quantities and pressures to deliver the required airflow will be investigated using ventilation network modeling.

"The Deep Ocean Resources Development Co. Ltd. (DORD) of Japan signed a 15-years contract with the International Seabed Authority for exploration of polymetallic nodule in a 75,000 km2 area, consisting of West and East Areas in the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zone in 2001. The exploration work is now concentrated in resource estimation of the first generation of mining area, the High Abundance Area.A detail survey of the Model Area, set in the High Abundance Area, was conducted using AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) equipped with MBES (Multi-Beam Echo Sounder), SSS (Side Scan Sonar), Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP) and still camera. The seafloor topographic map based on 1 m grid data was produced in an area of approximately 80 km2 (Figure 1). Photographs, continuously covering the seafloor taken by AUV along two west-east trending traverse lines, together with detail seafloor topographic map produced from MBES give an excellent opportunity to observe distribution manner of pollymetalic nodule related to topographic features. This helps to understand more accurate resources estimation of a whole area of the High abundance Area. Furthermore, information of micro-topography gives ideas for conducting ore collecting operation and designing ore collector."

Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

Since the production prototype continuous vat leaching pilot plant was installed at Ariel Resources in Costa Rica in 1995, the test results and lessons learned have been invaluable in plotting the future of this method. Vigorous test programs in base and precious metals as well as design developments for studies have shown the advantages, economically, technically, and environmentally that favor this method over current practices in heap leaching and stirred tank leaching. Much larger individual vats have been developed with throughputs as high as 5000 t/d with larger vats envisaged, and there has been a trend towards using vats with ground ore. Five projects are slated to begin detailed engineering this year, three in precious metals and two in copper. Of particular interest to future producers is the ability to deposit d,y, detoxified tailings at a fraction of the cost of conventional methods. Proprieta,y work is ongoing which promises to eliminate the need for tailings dams when using other methods of processing such as flotation. This is of particular importance in light of dam failures around the world in recent years.

Since 1900, smelters have produced in Canada over 10 million tonnes of iron silicate waste slag containing significant quantities of nickel, cobalt and copper. The slag is reduced with aluminum and calcium oxide additions to produce a copper, nickel, and cobalt enriched alloy and an obsidian slag. It was found that the obsidian slag contained very low copper, nickel, and cobalt contents, indeed below 0.06% of each the base metals. These metals have been collected in a type of ferroalloy with up to 1.6% Cu, 2.1% Ni, and 0.7% Co. These alloys can be recycled according to standard procedures in base metal smelters. Surprisingly, the obsidian slag was found to display good cementitious and pozzolanic properties, which is a requirement for cement production. The strength producing properties of the obsidian slag are considered to be exceptional at the 28 day standard test age. In most cases, the obsidian concrete is characterized by significantly greater strengths than control concrete tests and concrete containing fly ash or blast furnace slag. Compressive strength data at 365 days for the obsidian concrete is impressive.

The United States was the world&apos;s largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1994. According to US Bureau of Mines (USBM) estimates, boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled about 1.05 Mt (1.15 million st), yielding 560 kt (617,000 st) of B203, for a total estimated value of $370 million. This production level was about 2% less than 1993 revised figures. The United States continued to provide nearly all of its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid for export. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products during 1994 was 900 people, about the same as in 1993. USBM estimated total world production of boron of about 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st), yielding 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of B203. World production during 1994 was about the same as during 1993. USBM estimates US reserves to be about 210 Mt (231 million st) of ore and world reserves to be about 630 Mt (694 million st) of ore.

The line seven, as part of the development of the Subway Master Plan in Mexico City, will tunnel under different subsoil conditions of clay with high water content and low shear resistance located between 8 and 12m beneath the surface. Boulders in silty sand and gravel to a 40m depth underlay this stratum. Economics, scheduled time of construction, and the obligated interconnection with existing lines one and two determined the construction of the tunnels to have an overburden of 1.0 to 2.2 times the diameter. In the north part of line seven there is a track of 251m length that was decided to attack with an open shield of 9.14m of diameter due to the characteristics of the sub-soil, minimum section needed as well as a minimal overburden, of 10.41m. The paper explains the construction procedure from the excavation stage to the reinforcement of the final lining obligated for the ground subsidence as a result of volumetric changes of a stratum of 4m thick of clay overlying the crown of the shield. Hecla Mining&apos;s Lucky Friday Mine, located beneath the town of Mullan, ID, has been shaken since the 1960s by many deep underground rock bursts. The largest rock burst carried a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter Scale. It occurred in 1969 when all of the stopes on a level approached an upper level at the same elevation. After that, a stair-step pattern was used to give the mine&apos;s levels more of an "arch." The article is an account of one of the more ferocious bursts to hit the miners of the Lucky Friday. I say "miners" instead of "mine" because I was there and it was a very personal experience for me. I had been working at the Lucky Friday for six years. During that time, I had heard and felt thousands of air blasts. In fact, in the early spring of 1986, the mine was experiencing as many as 1000 air blasts an hour, of different intensi¬ties, of course. Most of them sounded like popcorn popping. There were also a few bumps and occasionally a real boomer. That day did not seem any different

The application of the Cyprus Cyanisorb process was investigated using a pilot scale facility at the NERCO DeLamar Silver Mine (DSM) in Owyhee County, Idaho. The purpose of this process is to remove cyanide from the DeLamar mill tailings slurry prior to its introduction to the tailings impoundment. This will maintain the tailings impoundment solution in a detoxified condition and thus prevent migratory bird mortalities. The cyanide removed is to be collected and recycled to the mill. The process successfully recovered approximately 90 percent of the weak acid dissociable cyanide (WAD), reducing the effluent tailings cyanide concentration from about 300 ppm to less than 20 ppm. This was accomplished by stripping the slurry with air in a packed tower and recovering the volatilized HCN in a packed absorption tower. Data were obtained for the design of the full scale facility including the stripping and absorption towers, currently under construction at the DeLamar Mine site. Finally, test results indicated that the final pH of reneutralization can be optimized to provide for minimal gold and silver losses, while selectively precipitating unwanted metal impurities (Zinc, Selenium, Iron, and Copper) from solution

The increasing global demand and lower price of gold has resulted in more advanced gold extraction techniques. One trend is the use of oxygen in place of air in the leaching process, which is proven to significantly enhance recovery of gold ore refractory in such techniques as CIP and CIL. This has resulted in a search for more reliable and cost efficient paradigms of oxygen supply. Many gold mines already realize the heightened recovery rate achieved with oxygen. Previously this benefit had only been available to the largest consumers of oxygen, near oxygen production facilities. Requirements of (1) to (20) metric tons per day have traditionally been supplied with expensive, delivered, liquid oxygen. Since many mines are located in remote areas, it is difficult to secure cost effective and continuous supply of liquid oxygen. However, the benefits of On-Site Oxygen Production combined with a self-generated bulk reserve supply are now available to mine sites. This paper explains and discusses the use of on site Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen production, coupled with a cryogenerator to liquefy oxygen for storage. This package offers continuous oxygen supply to mining sites in even the most remote corners of the world.

The desire to minimize gaseous effluent in smelting and maximize gold yields from refractory ore are driving the nonferrous and gold refining industries to demand more and more oxygen. This, coupled with an increasingly competitive marketplace, forces the investigation of alternate methods of oxygen supply. Current progress in both the non-cryogenic and cryogenic fields is making the use of low-purity oxygen much more attractive. The benefits of on-site production are now available to most oxygen users. Historically, these on-site advantages could only be achieved by relatively large plants using high-purity cryogenic technology. The evolution of low-purity cryogenic and non­cryogenic oxygen production has added a new method of delivering on-site production. Specifically, the advent of oxygen Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA) technology has brought these benefits to smaller-volume customers by cost-effectively supplying oxygen requirements as low as 20 tons per day, (tpd). Low-purity cryogenic plants have also made an impact on the market, yielding cost reductions for larger-volume customers with oygen requirements greater than 70 tpd. This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of current supply methods for users having varying volume, purity and other requirements.

Storm water runoff from mine facilities such as haul roads, waste disposal sites and ore bodies have become recognized as the primary facilities associated with non-point source drainage. Depending on the ore body, facility design and geographical setting, nonpoint source drainage can cause pollution impacts to local surface and ground water resources. Non-point source impacts from surface mine drainage have become an important regulatory issue for the mining industry. Implementing non-point source drainage control plans that prevent impacts to water resources can be accomplished cost-effectively with moderate labor requirements. Design considerations for plan development must incorporate parameters including contributing drainage area size, slope, flow velocity, vegetation characteristics and soil scour velocities. The success of non-point source drainage and erosion stabilization planning is based on implementing control measures that dissect drainage patterns, reduce flow velocities and disperse runoff towards sediment control sites. Interim and long-range drainage control measures should begin during exploration activities. Regulatory legislation addressing non-point source pollution sources was enacted as amendments to the Clean Water Act (CWA) in February 1987. The legislation required states to initiate non-point source pollution control programs.
