There are several practices mine operators should consider implementing to preserve their equipment. An exercise in review — Begin by reviewing original equipment manufacturer (OEM) recommendations regarding servicing and maintenance intervals for each part of the equipment, especially the engine. And the verdict is — If the manufacturer’s recommendations have been followed, good. If not, owners/operators should begin periodic service work on equipment, to help minimize equipment downtime and extend engine life.

Things are going well in the mining and construction industries world-wide. So good are things that from April 23 to 29 more than 500,000 visitors involved in those two industries attended the bauma 2007 Trade Show in Munich, Germany. Bauma is an international trade fair for construction and mining equipment that took place at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. It is hosted by Munich once every three years. This year was the most successful bauma ever and further strengthened the shows position as the world leader in the field.

Zircon (ZrSiO4) sand production of about 1.1 Mt/a(1.2 million stpy) predominates the global supply of zirconium minerals. Baddeleyite (ZrO2) contributes less than 1 percent of supply. Zircon is almost exclusively produced as a co-product from the mining of titanium minerals, mainly from mineralized beach sands. In 2004, there were a number of new projects under consideration that were more dependent on zircon revenue than for titanium minerals. This reflected sustained higher zircon prices and forecast ongoing supply shortages in the absence of major new discoveries.

In recent years observational techniques of tunneling have become increasingly popular methods to facilitate complex underground infrastructure projects. The traditional design and construction management practices developed in Europe have been adapted for application in North America to suit a more restrictive management and legal culture. This paper will discuss three recent projects, the San Diego Mission Valley East Extension, Washington Dulles International Airport People Mover, and the Seattle Beacon Hill Station and Tunnels, with the objective of identifying the challenges of applying observational tunneling methods to established contractual practices in North America.

Boulders, frequently found in tunnels excavated through soils, can pose major problems for full face TBMs in terms of slowing or halting the tunnel advance, cutter damage, and abrasive wear. The paper aims to consider the problem as a whole, from the geological characteristics of boulder sites, to the appropriate physical design of theTBM, and its operation in boulder-laden soils. In addition, visualization of boulders and other subsurface obstructions by seismic methods and ground penetrating radar are reviewed. The paper will assist the construction planner in assessing the risks and preparing appropriate specifications.

Metallic magnesium is mostly used in lightweight alloys in order to decrease fuel consumption in automotive applications. Several different production processes are currently used worldwide, and the magnesium production scenario is changing rapidly, with Chinese production increasingly dominating the world market. For the purpose of this paper, a novel approach to Life Cycle Assessment was applied, in which Material Flow Accounting and energy-based methods (Embodied Energy, Exergy and Emergy Analyses) are integrated and complemented, with a detailed description of the environmental hazards associated with emissions from all the different processes.

Homestake Mining Co. set out to complete final reclamation at a former open-pit gold mine in west central Nevada. The goal was to exceed regulatory standards by satisfying the company's own high corporate standards for successful reclamation. Homestake's completion requirements challenged available technology due to the unsuitability of heap material as a growth medium, the harsh environmental conditions of the site and the region's lack of native growth medium. Accomplishing these goals required enlisting a multidisciplinary project team to develop, test and implement appropriate and cost-effective revegetation alternatives.

The two contracts of the Big Walnut Augmentation/Rickenbacker Interceptor(BWARI) sewer project for the City of Columbus, Ohio total nearly 35,000 feet of 14and 12-foot diameter tunnel. EPB TBMs will install precast concrete segmental lining through difficult glacial soils ranging from clean granular to hard till with high groundwater and boulders, crossing roads, railroads, and a large stream. Construction of 12 shafts and a large Interconnect Structure involving major ground stabilization work is required. G.M. Philip and D.F. Watson The article cited above reflects the difficulty that is often encountered in interpreting different aspects of kriging. Baafi et al. write : "Due to negative kriging weights, negative block grades may be obtained in some extreme situations, which makes no practical sense." Their solution to this particular problem is to constrain the kriged estimates to data values that have positive weights, i.e., reduce the subset size contributing to the estimation. As Journel (1986, p. 133) has already observed, "Negative weights are no evil." Indeed, they are an ineluctable result of the Lagrangian multipliers in the system of simultaneous equations. The fact that data distant from the estimation point may be given negative weights simply means that the influence of such distant values must be negated because their influence is contradictory to closer values (as illustrated by Baafi et al. in their Figs. 3 and 4). Of course negative kriging weights applied to distant grade values will not in themselves induce negative grade at some central interpolation point. Negative grade values, rather, seem to be a particular artifact of automatic methods of estimation involving accu¬mulations (Philip and Watson, 1985a, 1985b, 1987b). The elimination of negative weights, suggested by Baafi et al., is likely to exacerbate a quite different problem of kriging and piecewise spline interpolation discussed elsewhere (Philip and Watson, 1987a). In interpolating large data sets of scattered observations, changing local subsets or neighborhoods must be selected automatically. Because of the mathematical formulation of kriging and spline interpolation, discontinuities then occur between closely-spaced estimation points as the subset used in the estimation changes. If this subset is reduced in number and size, the discontinuities will be amplified and more common. ? Kim Before replying to the comments by Philip and Watson, it is desirable to establish the original perspective of our paper, which was intended primarily for the practitioners of mining who possess a working knowledge of ordinary kriging. The paper tried to convey the following practical points: (1) there are circumstances in which one observes negative weights, (2) illustration of circumstances under which one can expect negative weights, (3) should one obtain a negative estimated grade, one can resort to elimination of negative weights using the technique outlined in the paper, and (4) one could normally select only the first layer of surrounding assays to estimate the block grade. Under such a perspective, most of the comments by Philip and Watson are irrelevant and misdirected. For example, the practitioners do not find it difficult to "interpret" the results of ordinary kriging, as evidenced by the fact that they have been using the results for nearly a decade. Nor are the practitioners concerned with discontinuities in estimated block grades due to changing neighborhood of assays during kriging. What matters to the practitioners is the fact that kriging does provide the best estimate among all the estimation tools available to them as of today. ?

Introduction As ore grades decline and deposit depths increase, problems and costs of mining construction increase rapidly. Ground water greatly impacts the cost of mining construction. In developing or exploiting ore bodies or coal mines, stored ground water in waterbearing formations is often encountered. Man-made conduits or shafts are constructed, as are raise bores for ventilation (up to 6-m-diam or 20-ft-diam), or smaller diameter drill holes, used for either power cables or rock dust. In underground construction and mining, it is possible to inherit unmapped and abandoned drill holes either from oil or gas exploration, or from previous geological investigations. There also exists within underground work exposure to faults, fissures, and jointing. A mine development may encounter unknown aquifers or, unluckily, have an ore body that is an aquifer. Water may invade an existing underground structure, due to concrete deterioration or to damage that may occur to an existing shaft or tunnel concrete lining. An underground development may intersect a drill hole that was not properly grouted when abandoned. It subsequently formed a conduit or an active path to conduct water into the mine. Water inflow may range from insignificant to a magnitude sufficient to inundate an area or an entire underground development. Corrosion imposes major costs. In shafts, it can cause accelerated wear and deterioration, and subsequent early replacement of hoisting ropes. It can also cause deterioration, misalignment, and subsequent accelerated wear and replacement of timber and steel guides and buntons. Utility maintenance (power cables, air, water, and ventilation lines) also can become a problem. Corrosion imposes major costs. Skips and skiploaders provide a never-ending series of maintenance headaches when exposed to an ingress of water. Numerous problems are found in declines with invert and rail maintenance and with partitions in over-under coal mine slopes. Ground water interacting with an underground ventilation system can result in: • Increased ventilation resistance due to roof falls and the spalling of ribs caused by ice heaving. • Restriction in shaft or slope cross-sectional area due to ice buildup during winter months. This may be a safety hazard to access as well. • An increase in the moisture content entering the ventilation air that condenses underground and causes electrical and equipment maintenance problems. Underground structures also incur water-caused problems. The concrete lining in shafts, slopes, and tunnels may be subject to: • Active mine waters causing concrete and reinforcing steel to deteriorate - perhaps to the point of collapse. • Load redistribution around a concrete lining, caused by soil dislocation due to water movement. The resulting stress may be in excess of the calculated design loading. Backwall injection with grout of the completed concrete lining may solve these water inflow problems through low-pressure injections of cement and chemicals. This fills voids at the interface of the concrete lining with either the soil or rock excavation. Surface structures may be jeopardized by lowering the ground water table, resulting in surface settlements. Surface settlements can occur in buildings, headframes, hoist foundations, mills, conveyor structures, or in rail haulage. Areas of differential settlement can lead to derailments, improper wear of hoisting ropes on sheaves in headframes, and the misalignment of bearings and brakes. Mud jacking and compaction grouting may remedy these problems. To reduce operating costs, increase efficiency, and increase safety, inflow water to the mine should be minimized. For an operating mine with a water problem, a water inflow survey should be taken. Quantities of water flow should be examined at all accesses (shafts, slopes, bore holes, and raise bores) at the faces, haulages (rails or conveyors), and sump discharge. Horace Tabor. No 19th century Colorado mining man is better known but, unfortunately, probably less understood. He is little appreciated for his significant contributions to the industry and the state. A century ago, Tabor was headline news. The legend today, however, has become so all pervasive and so interwoven with fact that the two are hard to separate. For example, he never told Baby Doe on his death bed to hang on to the Matchless mine. Yet this has emerged as staple Tabor fare. So much attention has been focused on his matrimonial triangle that it overshadows the man. Symbol of mining's reward Tabor traveled west in the 1859 Pike's Peak gold rush. In the next generation, he came to symbolize the rewards mining might lavish on an individual. The Leadville Daily Herald (Sept. 10, 1882) could write, without exaggeration, that "the extent which the mining industry of Colorado is under obligation to Tabor cannot be easily estimated - what he has done for Leadville and Denver is patent to all." It had not come easily, nor had Tabor started out a success. His early placer mining at Payne's Bar, near present-day Idaho Springs, CO, had turned no fortune. So in 1860, he, his wife Augusta, and son went south to Colorado City, then over Ute Pass and up the Arkansas Valley to Oro City. Arriving soon after the initial discovery, Tabor staked a good claim. With a sharp eye, he and Augusta broadened their base by establishing a store. Both mining and business would pay dividends in the following years. By the season's end, though, Oro City was already declining. Always on the lookout for a richer district, Tabor and his family moved the next year across the mountains to promising Buckskin Joe. The familiar pattern followed, with the store and post office being the center of their attention. Mining investment and management now replaced the earlier physical panning and sluice operating. Seven years later, the Tabors abandoned Buckskin Joe and returned to Oro City. It had moved up California Gulch to be near the district's best mine, the Printer Boy. Middle class was not enough Middle class respectability, plus a steady income, was the Tabor's by the 1870s; fine as far as it went. But it proved far from the fortune Horace had always been seeking. Oro City languished in the backwash of Colorado mining and Tabor seemed like many men who had drifted around the Territory following the ebb and flow of mining. His faithful wife Augusta had been a steady factor in the success the family achieved. She helped year after year to operate the store and post office. Not simply the happy-go-lucky individual he has often been portrayed, Tabor was a hard working businessman/mine owner. An R. G. Dun and Company agent evaluated him in 1876 "Net worth $23,200. Is a very shrewd businessman and not liable to lose money, has a good chance to make money as he had no competition." Leadville: Tabor's silverlined-fortune After all those years on the Colorado mining frontier, in 1877, Lake County's wealthiest and most respected merchant made another move. It was short in distance, only 4 km (2.5 miles) down California Gulch, then a little north to a new mining camp. This new camp, soon named Leadville, gave birth to the Tabor fortune and legend. Middle-aged (Horace was 47), the Tabors once more set up their general store and found themselves in the midst of the open¬ing of a new district. This time silver beckoned and not the gold that had brought them West 18 years before.

Two major events highlight recent developments in US ore and coal ports: completion of the last series of modern taconite pellet transshipment facilities on the Great Lakes; and modernization and construction of coal ports, particularly on the East and Gulf Coasts. The New Taconite Transportation System To reduce raw material transportation costs, a fleet of new generation high-capacity 304-m (1,000-ft) self-unloading vessels were built to carry iron ore pellets from the Minnesota-Michigan iron ranges to the steel plants on the lower Great Lakes. Existing port facilities had to be modernized, revised, or completely rebuilt to accommodate these large vessels. Some of these were Burlington Northern's Allouez, WI, loading dock; Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co.'s Two Harbors, MN, facility; Republic Steel's Lorain, OH, facility; and Chessie's Toledo, OH, dock. Allouez and Two Harbors receive taconite pellets from unit trains and load them onto large vessels either after dumping or via a large stockpile and reclaim system. The Lorain facility receives iron ore pellets from self-unloading vessels' discharge boom conveyor and reloads the pellets into rail cars or small vessels destined to inland steel mills. The Toledo facility receives Armco pellets from vessels, stockpiles them through the winter, and reloads into unit trains destined for Armco's mills along Chessie's rail tracks. Burlington Northern's $75-million Allouez pellet dock, completed in June 1977, was built to receive pellets produced by Hibbing Taconite Co. and National Pellet Plant in Minnesota, stockpile them through the winter when the lakes are frozen, and load them into 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels in the shipping season. As much as 10 Mt (11 million st) of pellets may be stockpiled within the loop track. A 6-km (4-mile) long conveyor system connects the stockpile area and the dock. Thirty-six new concrete silos were built on the dock to house 2 kt (2,000 st) each of pellets before shiploading. The $35.5-million expansion of the Two Harbors transshipment facilities began shiploading in July 1978 after ground breaking in Aug. 1974. Particularly noteworthy is the first application of the Orboom system-a breakthrough in technology for the modernization of the century-old pocket docks on the Great Lakes to accommodate the new generation of super vessels. The pocket-type loading dock has been a standard on the lakes for nearly a hundred years. Bottom-dump rail cars fill the ore pockets on top of a finger pier. Gravity chutes matching standardized ore ship hatch spacings are lowered to fill the holds of a 20.3-kt (20,000-dwt) ship. The construction is simple and the loading swift. In spite of advances in technology elsewhere, most of these docks continue to serve the iron ore and coal trade in the same manner they did in the 19th century. Although performance of the pocket docks on small vessels remains outstanding, the new 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels are beyond the reach of the old docks. After extensive development, the Orboom system (Patent No. 4,065,002) for pocket docks was successfully developed. The heart of the Orboom system is the retractable shuttle loading arm which loads the wide beam vessels. The Orboom shuttles are fed by existing pockets of the dock that, in turn, are charged by a tripper conveyor along the length of the dock. The Two Harbors shiploading system is supported by a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) storage-reclaim network. Unit trains are bottom dumped. As Edward E. Runyan, 1983 AIME President, in an interview excerpt in ME, June, p. 607, stated, "...the AIME Transition Committee has recom¬mended to the AIME Board that each Constituent Society be allowed the option of separate incorporation, whereby each could become its own separate legal entity." Background The American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME) was formed in 1871 by 22 engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Although originally a mining organization, it became a home for metallurgists, iron and steel industry people, and for the individuals in the expanding petroleum engineering profession. There are now four Constituent Societies: Society of Mining Engineers, located in Littleton, CO, 29,000 members; Society of Petroleum Engineers, located in Dallas, TX, 47,500 members; The Metallurgical Society, located in Warrendale, PA, 10,000 members; and Iron and Steel Society, located in Warrendale, PA, 6,500 members. Each of the four groups has grown and continues to serve the specific and/or diverse needs of its membership. As the needs and requirements of their industries and professions change, each of the Societies has perceived and initiated programs that serve their constituency rather than AIME as a whole. Therefore, each Society has recognized an increasing need for autonomy to better augment their own programs. An AIME Ad Hoc Transition Committee, with Robert Merrill, AIME Past President, as chairman, made a number of recommendations pertaining to AIME operations that were approved in October 1982 by the AIME Board of Directors. One of the recommendations was to endorse separate incorporation of the Constituent Societies on an individual-society-option basis. The AIME Board commissioned a task force of Constituent Society representatives to develop specific revisions to the AIME Certificate of Incorporation and the AIME Constitution and Bylaws. This was done to allow separate incorporation and to reflect the decentralized structure of the Institute. The SME-AIME Board of Directors subsequently approved the recommendation of SME Working Party #69 that SME pursue separate incorporation. Meanwhile, Working Party #69 continues to work with the other Constituent Societies and with the AIME Task Force on Reorganization to determine the form and substance of the separate incorporation. Why Incorporate? George Webster in The Law of Associations quoted Chief Justice Marshall's (1819) definition of corporation as: "A corporation is an artificial being, invisible, intangible, and existing only in contemplation of law. Being the mere creature of law, it possesses only those properties which the charter of its creation confers upon it, either expressly or as incidental to its very existence. These are such as are supposed best calculated to effect the object for which it was created." SME-AIME attorneys, Davis, Graham & Stubbs, have pointed out that the status of an organization operating as an unincorporated association is always unclear. At present, SME-AIME administers assets of almost $3.5 million (mainly property and inventory) but technical ownership and ability to enter into contractual relationships resides with AIME. However, the operation appears to outsiders (particularly those with whom SME-AIME does business) to be an independent operation which would be expected to be a legal entity in its own right. Advantages of Incorporation Liability. Because of legal ownership by AIME of all assets of the Constituent Societies, those assets are subject to the claims of any of the creditors of AIME or any of its constituent parts (i.e., the other societies). Liabilities can be those usually encountered in business but also encompass special risks, which could develop if there were a careless and erroneous publication of material that might be used in practice or if standards are improperly established. Throughout the 1970s, the US Bureau of Mines rode an ebb tide in Washington political circles. In rapid fire succession, the agency lost its mine health and safety enforcement responsibility (1973), a large portion of its energy research responsibility (1975), and then its fuel statistics functions plus a sizable portion of its coal R&D (1977). By 1978, johnny-come-latelies in the Energy, Labor, and Interior Departments had siphoned away from the Bureau some $125 million in program responsibilities as well as 900 of its employees. The bruising decade came to a close with a Department of Natural Resources proposal that, in its original form, would have scattered the Bureau's responsibilities to the winds. "There is no doubt in my wind," said Lindsay Norman, acting director of the Bureau of Mines (see box), "that were the Bureau to continue down the path it was on, the next step was closing the doors and going out of business." The doors are still open, but erosion of responsibilities had a devastating effect on the resources available to fulfill the Bureau's mission. Devastating, too, in terms of internal morale, considering the Bureau had six directors in a 10-year span. "When the troops are in the trenches and are being shot at," Norman said, "they need a leader-hopefully, a permanent one- that can get them advancing. This is something the Bureau did not consistently have in the 1970s." In September 1978, Roger Markle climbed aboard as director of the Bureau to rejuvenate the 70-year-old agency. He resigned only six months later* but the program Markle set in motion is being carried through by Lindsay Norman. Since Norman's appointment as acting director, he has spent considerable time on the road explaining his agency's redefined goals. At one such stop in Duluth, Norman and his two deputy directors, Charles Kenahan and Mike Kaas, answered the following questions. Lindsay, you were the principal architect in the Bureau's 1979 reorganization. How about a glimpse of what that entailed? Toward the end of the 1970s, after almost a decade of steady dismemberment, we reached what we felt was a critical point in the Bureau's history-we had the choice of redefining and strengthening our organization to meet the mineral challenges ahead, or continuing down the path toward the agency's eventual demise. We felt the Bureau's mission too important to abandon, so in 1978 with Roger Markle as director we initiated a six-month, no-holds-barred intro spection of just what the Bureau should be doing, why, and toward what ultimate national needs. And what did this self-reflection reveal? That there is, indeed, a unique federal role for the Bureau of Mines-that of a lead agency for influencing mineral decisions and pioneering tomorrow's technologic advances. Don't confuse us with policymakers, we're not. But we are policy analysts; we're scientists, engineers, and mineral professionals who can offer a sorely needed source of objective, accurate information to decision makers in both the public and private sectors. I feel there is no better brain trust in government than the Bureau when it comes to mineral expertise-of course, I'm biased. Do I understand you to say the Bureau of Mines is an advocate agency for the minerals industry? We plead no parochial interests, nor ought we, but from our viewpoint a sound minerals industry is extremely important to the broader national goals of security and a healthy economy. US dependence on foreign sources for critical minerals, the increasing noncompetitiveness of some US mineral sectors, and the array of land use issues surrounding mineral-rich lands all have much more serious implications than many otherwise informed people seem to recognize. In your estimation, how vulnerable is the US to foreign mineral suppliers? Let me make a distinction between dependency and vulnerability. The

I'm really very pleased to be talking with you today about the environmental impacts of gold ore processing as part of this symposium on emerging process technologies for a cleaner environment. But before I talk about some of the newer developments that are coming, I would like to set the stage by reviewing some of the recent past. Over the last decade or so the U.S. gold mining industry has experienced remarkable growth, primarily in heap leaching operations, and not surprisingly there has been parallel growth of environmental regulations. At Homestake, we have had the excitement of bringing on-line a new mine embodying state-of-the-art technology and environmental planning, and during the same period the flagship of our company, the Homestake mine, has been brought into modern day compliance through the application of innovative environmental technology. This has been a learning process; in both cases we found that we had to develop new ways to meet our objectives. At our McLaughlin mine in California a major achievement was pioneering the use of pressure oxidation, or autoclaves, for refractory gold ores, and at the Homestake it was the development of a unique bio-treatment plant for wastewater. These projects were developed balancing operational goals, environmental concerns and costs, and I would submit that being cost-effective is our greatest challenge in the development of new, environmentally sound, process technology. In meeting that challenge, our job has not been made any easier by the myriad environmental laws and regulations that directly affect the design and operation of our facilities. Most of these constraints have evolved through the political process more or less independently, but in their application there often are over-lapping provisions. Adding to this complexity is the fact that action takes place in both state and federal arenas. As a result, state and federal roles sometimes become intertwined, and a good case in point is provided by various cyanide issues faced by gold producers. The vast majority of U.S. gold mining takes place in the so-called "mineral States," the western States that come under the Mining Law of 1872 as amended. This is the basic statute that provides for access and tenure to develop mineral resources on federal lands in those states. There is gold mining outside the defined mineral States, and there is also gold mining in the mineral States on private lands. Our own Homestake mine in South Dakota is one of the best examples of the latter category: located entirely on private land, it is nevertheless subject to at least 13 federal environmental statutes and some 29 federal regulatory requirements. There are also nine significant state statutory and regulatory requirements that apply. On federal lands in the mineral States there are numerous federal statutes and regulations which affect mining, over and above the current Mining Law. These, which are in addition to the laws applying to private land, include the National Environmental Protection Act and the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, among others. Still, those who advocate radical changes in the basic Mining Law would have us believe that sweeping environmental protection and reclamation provisions, not to mention new land use restrictions, are needed. Such changes could effectively prohibit mining on the federal public lands. Strict enforcement of our current Mining Law would have presented most of the abuses cited by the critics but if the Law is to be changed at all, I believe that, at a minimum, the principles of self-initiation and security of tenure embodied in the present statute should be maintained. These are critically important concepts, but there are other statutory and regulatory issues constantly before us as gold miners. In a dispersion of particles in liquid a net charge will develop at the particle-liquid interface. This surface charge is usually due to the adsorption of charged material from solution. The existence of this surface charge gives rise to the formation of the electric double layer of counter-ions which surrond the charged particle. The particle surface charge and the electrostatic repulsion which exists between similarly charged particles is the primary stabilization mechanism for lyophobic colloids (1). The separation of charge which occurs at the particle-liquid interface gives rise to several dynamic phenomena associated with colloidal systems or with solid-liquid interfaces in general. These phenomena are known as electrokinetic phenomena and the four classic electrokinetic phenomena are; electrophoresis, electroosmosis, streaming potential, and sedimentation or Dorn potential. The actual driving force for electrokinetic phenomena is not the surface charge per se, but the charge at the interface between the liquid which is hydrodynamically bound to the particle surface and the bulk fluid. This interface is known as the slipping plane or the plane of shear and the potential at this interface is the zeta potential (2). The factors linking the electrokinetic phenomena is that they involve a relative motion between the liquid and the charged particle or solid surface and the driving force is the zeta potential of the solid. In addition to the four classic electrokinetic phenomena there are two additional electrokinetic effects in disperse systems; the electro-acoustic effects. When an alternating electric field is applied to a cooloidal dispersion the particles will move in the field due to their net zeta potential. If there is a density difference between the particles and the fluid this motion will result in the development of an acoustic wave. The effect was discovered at Matec and has been termed the Electrokinetic Sonic Amplitude or ESA (3). ESA is the pressure amplitude generated by the colloid per unit applied electric field strength and has SI units of pascals per volt per meter. When an alternating pressure field (acoustic wave) is applied to a colloidal dispersion the inverse of the ESA effects occurs. A density difference between the disperse phase and the continuous phase leads to a relative motion between the particles and the surrounding liquid. This means that there will be a periodic displacement between the charged particle and the oppositely charged counter-ions in the electric double year. This displacement results in the development of an alternating dipole moment at the frequency of the applied field. This effect is termed the Ultrasonic Vibration Potential or UVP and was first predicted for electrolyte solutions by Debye in 1933 (4). UVP is measured in units of volts per unit velocity amplitude of the applied acoustic field or volts per meter per second. In 1938, Rutgers (5) and Hermans (6) pointed out that the effect would also be present in colloidal dispersions. A detailed theory for UVP effects in colloids, also called CVP, was first presented by Enderby in 1951 (7). Extensive studies of the UVP in electrolytes have been carried out by Yeager et al (8). Recently, O'Brien (9) has developed a general theoretical treatment of electro- acoustic effects in colloids and has derived a reciprocal relation linking ESA and CVP effects. The most commonly studied electrokinetic phenomena is electrophoresis. Electrophoresis is the movement of charges particles in an applied electric field. The velocity of the particle divided by the applied electric field strength is the electrophoretic mobility of the particle. The zeta potential can be calculated from this mobility (2). The magnitude of both the ESA and CVP effects are directly proportional to the electrophoretic mobility of the particles. The mobility determined by the two electro-acoustic effects is the dynamic or AC mobility of the particles.

I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent com¬parative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging.

Introduction Operation is underway at the Dutch Creek No. 1 mine of the first US longwall panel to be mined under the cooperative agreement between the US Bu¬reau of Mines and Mid-Continent Resources. The 244-m (800-ft) wide longwall face is part of a multilift longwall demonstration. A 3-m (10-ft) top slice is being extracted from the 8.5-m (28-ft) coal seam. This occurs in an area of the property where the Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B beds have come together to form one seam. This face, longest ever operated in the US, is being worked on an advancing longwall system. During the first months of its operation, this longwall face has been very productive and safe. Mid-Continent Resources operates two coal mines in the Coal Basin, located in the White River National Forest near Carbondale, CO. The Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. originally opened this property in 1895, and conducted a small mining operation for 10 years on the north rim of the basin and then abruptly shut down. Mid-Continent began operations in 1956, after the Coal Basin fields had lain idle for about 60 years. Operations commenced at the outcrop of the Coal Basin B bed situated at the 3-km (10,000-ft) elevation. At this time, coal was produced from Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B seams in the area. Since 1981, operations have been centralized at two mines, the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the Dutch Creek No. 2, both located in the center of the basin. Since 1981, Mid-Continent has shifted its emphasis to longwall mining as the primary method of production, and each of these mines is equipped with state-of-the-art longwalls using shields as the method of roof support. A 4-km (13,000-ft) long twin-bore rock tunnel is being driven at a lower elevation of 2.4 km (8,000 ft) to intersect the coal seams at depth, as they dip 12° in a westerly direction. This tunnel will enable the company to reduce costs by replacing trucks with conveyor belt haulage (Fig. 1). Mid-Continent began longwall operations in May 1976 with the US's first modern, mechanized advancing longwall face, using chocks. In August 1978, a second advancing longwall face was started. Results from two faces showed that the mining system could be used effectively to manage the difficult conditions encountered in both the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the L. S. Wood No. 3 mines. Unfortunately, low productivity and high costs plagued the company's advancing faces. The problems resulted principally from major equipment failures, poorly designed chocks and face conveyors, and the lack of an efficient, cost effective system for building packwalls. Flushing of rock between chocks and roof control were also major problems. In Sept. 1979, Mid-Continent and the US Bureau of Mines entered into a cooperative agreement to demonstrate the feasibility of mining thick coal seams using the multilift longwall mining method. Two lifts are to be used to mine the 8.5-m (28-ft) thick coal seam in Dutch Creek No. 1 mine. The Bureau provided mining equipment for 180 m (600 ft) of longwall face. This included the shields, face conveyor and drive units, shearing machines, panel belt, and stageloader. As a result of previous experience in advancing longwall mining, Mid-Continent purchased an additional 60 m (200 ft) of face, including roof supports and an additional face conveyor.
