"The European aluminium industry, through its member organisation the European Aluminium Association (EAA), initiated a program on sustainable development for the aluminium industry in 2001. The first step involved the development of a set of sustainable development (SD) indicators for the industry, taking into account of the different interests involved and also the different existing conventions. The indicator set was developed during 2001 and 2002 with the assistance of recognised partners, including Wuppertal Institute from Germany and Versailles University from France. As well, both internal and external stakeholder groups were involved in order to validate the indicators. This has resulted in a set of thirty-four indicators used in the first survey exercise. In the survey the EAA, together with the national aluminium associations, attempted to cover all European plants producing alumina, primary aluminium, rolling ingots, extrusion ingots, foil and recycled aluminium -covering approximately 800 plants. The survey used two points in time, 1997 and 2002, in order to start developing a trend for the individual indicators and to measure progress over time. The industry response to the survey was very positive, with a total industry coverage based on tonnage reported of over 80% for 2002 data and 70% for 1997 data. The results also show a solid progress for most indicators and particularly for social indicators such as training performance, community involvement and employees health programmes. The EAA is committed to conducting this as a regular exercise and is engaged in a number of stakeholder workshops in order to present the survey results, to review the indicators used and to also consider adjustments of these based on feedback from stakeholders and experiences from the first data collection."

Today many small diameter tunnels are being constructed in Metropolitan areas and towns as transmission holes for utilities such as water, electricity, natural gas and sewage, to name a few. These tunnels function as utilities beneath the streets, highways, railways, and other structures where open-cut techniques are impractical for any one of a number of reasons. Many such bores range in diameter from 15 to 72 inches and in lengths from 100 to 500 feet. Auger drills with auger type heads have long been used to bore these "road crossings" as they are usually termed; however, many such crossings must be bored in rock with rock-boring heads. Rock with a compressive strength of 15,000 p.s.i. and higher seems to present the greatest challenge for the contractor. These rocks include most igneous and metamorphic rocks and some sedimentary rocks. In general, this grasps most granites, basalts, gneisses, slates, schists, quartzites, limestones, and cherts. In the past ten years boring machines have been developed and used to excavate road crossings through hard rock. Many crossings have been successfully excavated using these machines, and the degree of success has increased substantially in the last few years. A variety of machines have been built and manufactured to bore most rock in a range of diameters up to 72 inches. The machines vary in capabilities, size ranges, and designs but all perform the same basic task and function of boring horizontally. Incidently, here the term horizontal implies horizontal or within five degrees of horizontal. The primary purpose of this project was to produce and test coal concentrates made from coal preparation plant waste fines for use in a slurry-fed gasifier. Concentrates from several individual waste streams were examined to determine their amenability as feedstock for a slurry-fed, slagging, entrained-flow gasifier. The tests included analyses of the plant feed and product, material balances, and estimates of gasification reactivity and of pumpability. The following preparation plant fines were examined: • fresh rejects produced in a plant processing underground- mined Springfield Coal • fresh rejects produced in a plant processing underground- mined Herrin Coal • fresh rejects produced in a plant processing surface-mined Springfield Coal and Herrin Coal • Five-year old impounded fines rejected during processing of underground mined Herrin Coal. At high coal recoveries the Btu content of the concentrates was greater than the Btu content of the utility product from the plant. The coal recovered from fines was found to be entirely acceptable for gasification and pumping without additives.

Electrothermal production of elemental phosphorous (P4) generates substantial amounts of highly toxic phossy water and sludges. Because of their high phosphorous contents and lack of reliable processing technology, large tonnages of these hazardous wastes have accumulated from current and past operations. To date, the sludges are stored in ponds or above ground in special containment vessels at various locations around the country. Two samples of electric furnace phosphorous sludge (obtained from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Muscle Shoals, AL and FMC Corporation in Pocatello, ID) were investigated using physical separation techniques to recover the elemental phosphorous and to render the residual material nonhazardous. The techniques tested include sizing, froth flotation and dispersed air oxidation. Flotation and sizing produced concentrates containing 69% - 90%P4, with recovery in the range of 60% - 87%. Dispersed air oxidation of the fines and tailings products was effective in the removal of an additional 10% - 15% of the P4 in the sludge.

CRA has been actively involved in developing a bacterial oxidation process for the treatment of low grade, refractory gold resources. Success in this application is dependant on the design of large, energy efficient reactors. It was identified at an early stage, that the conventional, bottom sparged bioreactor is inherently inefficient because air must be compressed to a pressure above that at the bottom of the tank. This inefficiency increases as the size of the reactor increases. CRA has developed a novel approach to the aeration problem. In this, venturi aeration is used to aspirate air into a liquor stream. The stream is then reintroduced at the top of a draft tube bioreactor. The advantages found with this technique include · low energy requirements and high oxygen utilisations. From results at the 30 m3 scale, we predict an energy usage of -500 kWh/t sulphur oxidised at a scale of 1000 m3.

The recovery of gold from a high grade telluride/sulphide flotation concentrate was investigated. Conventional cyanidation resulted in very slow rates of gold extraction. Historically, the refractory nature of tellurides has been overcome by fine grinding, the use of excess lime and long leach times. In some instances, pre­oxidation of the tellurides has also been necessary, to render the gold soluble in cyanide solutions. The former conditions did improve the rate of gold extraction from the present sample, but final recovery was still unacceptable. Chemical oxidation of the tellurides and leaching with oxygen improved gold recovery further. However, it was found that simple modifications to the cyanidation conditions overcame the detrimental effects of the complex chemistry involved in leaching a telluride concentrate. The incorporation of a solution change, or the application of a carbon-in-leach procedure increased the recovery of gold to over 97 percent in 96 hours. In every case, leaching was enhanced by the addition of lead salts.

Finely disseminated iron ores compose much of today's reserves. After removing the silicate gangue, the resulting fine iron oxide concentrates require pelletization with a binder to enable transportation and reduction. Binders can be used more efficiently if their binding mechanisms can be completely understood. Typically, bentonite clay is needed as a binder to improve the strength of the pellets. Bentonite is an effective binder at a relatively low cost, but costs could be reduced further by replacing bentonite with even lower-cost binders, such as high-carbon Fly-Ash Based Binder (FBB). In this study, it was found that bentonite binds by a physical mechanism, while FBB binds by a chemical mechanism. These mechanisms were determined to be incompatible. Partial replacement of either binder with the other reduced dry magnetite pellet compressive strengths below the industrially acceptable value of 22.2 newtons (5 lbf). Activators and accelerators that activated the fly-ash deactivated the bentonite. The incompatibility of these two binders is explained.

Direct mineral carbonation was investigated as a process to convert gaseous CO2, into a geologically stable final form. The process utilizes a slurry of water, with bicarbonate and salt additions, mixed with a mineral reactant, such as olivine (Mg2SiO4) or serpentine [Mg3Si2O5(OH)4]. Carbon dioxide is dissolved into this slurry, resulting in dissolution of the mineral and precipitation of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). Optimum results were achieved using heat-pretreated serpentine feed material and a high partial pressure of CO2 (Pc02). Specific conditions include 155°C, PC02 = 185 atm and 15% solids. Under these conditions, a 78% conversion of the silicate to the carbonate was achieved in 30 minutes. Process mineralogy was utilized to investigate the appropriate feed characteristics, identify the process products and interpret the mineral dissolution and carbonate precipitation reaction paths. The Hiddenite District of Alexander County, NC has produced some of the world?s finest large emeralds since the first one was discovered 134 years ago. In fact, North America?s largest emeralds come from the district, making this one of the continent?s most unique gem deposits. In addition to emeralds, the Hiddenite District is also famous as the discovery site for the rare spodumene mineral hiddenite, first identified in 1881. Nowhere else in the world do these two minerals naturally occur together. The emeralds are a unique color variety of beryl (Al2Be3Si6O18) with trace amounts of Cr+3 and V+3 substituting for Al+3. The hiddenite (LiAlSi2O6) crystals also exhibit emerald green color due to traces of chromium. Consisting of three large deposits and numerous prospects, the district encompasses an area of 10 km2 (4 sq miles) centered on the small town of Hiddenite. Operations at the Adams, Ellis and North American Emerald Mines properties have been productive at irregular intervals since the 1880s. Currently, only the North American Emerald Mines property is being mined on a regular basis. Recent activity there has exposed a 3-hm2 (7.4-acre) pit with depths of 25 m (82 ft) that provides the best exposures of unweathered bedrock seen in the district in more than 120 years. Although no official records exist, public and private data indicate that the production of the entire Hiddenite District from 1880 to 2007 is about 70,000 carats of emerald and 20,000 carats of hiddenite. The bulk of the emeralds came from the North American Emerald Mine property (NAEM, formerly known as the Rist Mine) where sustained mining replaced the previous sporadic prospecting in 2000.

The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service, port construction, trans-shipment, and environmental control. The major problem is the shipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. This report reviews progress in slurry transportation research that has been done in Japan since the 1960s, when large-scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are focused on.

Pyrite samples from twenty-one locations in the North Carolina Slate Belt were analyzed for cobalt, gold, mercury, and nickel by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The geographic distribution of relatively high values of certain trace elements in pyrite suggests that, in addition to gold, cobalt and nickel metallogenetic provinces are possible in the slate belt. Northwest trends of province boundaries may be genetically related to subsurface features rather than to surface geology. Within province boundaries gold and nickel exploration programs should be concentrated in areas containing intermediate to mafic tuffs, while cobalt may be more concentrated in argillites and phyllites.

A procedure is presented for ranking hazardous waste sites for remedial decisions, and an example with application to mining waste sites is discussed. Typical contaminant concentrations are calculated from field data. Exposure indices that compare these measured concentrations with allowable limits are then computed. The limits are selected to protect both the health of humans (for both carcinogen and noncarcinogen effects) and the health of key organisms in the ecological food web. The additive exposure index for a site, defined as the sum of all contaminant-specific exposure indices, is then used in ranking the sites and assigning each a priority for remedial action. One key source of uncertainty in the process is the estimation of a typical site concentration from data that include values reported as "below certified reporting limit" (BCRL). This uncertainty is compounded in the additive exposure index and therefore may have a substantial effect on the assignment of remediation priority. A general approach is presented for incorporating consideration of BCRL data into uncertainty evaluation when assigning remediation priority designators to hazardous waste sites.

Methods used for assay of gold values in resource estimation, grade control or downstream processing are based almost entire­ly on Fire assay or Aqua Regia techniques. Both these tech­niques frequently produce spurious results. The mechanism of error is explained. Major decisions are made based on this often flawed data. This is what our operating budgets and projected cash flows are based on. Project economics demands metallur­gical accountability for performance predicted. Accountants and more astute members of the board are often not sympathetic to gold out-tum from plant production which is occasionally or consistently less than that predicted. Equally importantly, better than budgeted gold out-tum, resulting from under assaying will produce reconciliation or accounting problems (surplus cash flow) often denying correct timing of expansion or acquisition. Both these scenarios can be avoided if 'real world' extractable gold values are presented to financial managers at all stages. Such extractable gold results are now possible, and compared to fire assay and aqua regia, the assays are faster, cheaper, simpler and more accurate.

Kushk lead-zinc mine is located in central part of IRAN. The mine is owned by Bafgh Mines Co., which is a nationalized company. Exploration results show that ore occurs in the area that extends for 800m length and 180m depth. The approved, probable and possible reserves of the mine is 900,000 tons, 1,120,000, tons and 1,450,000 tons respectively with average grade of 17.7% zinc and 4.3% lead. The total annual output of the mine all was by underground mining, is in the order of 100. 000 tons. The main entry to the mine is via an inclined shaft with a cross-sectional arp of 8 m2, length of 263m which dips at 20°. The ore is mined mostly by sublevel stopinq method. The major difficulty in ventilating the mine was that related to spontaneous combustion of pyrite, which was more serious in some parts of the mine than others. In order to reduce this risk, a new ventilation system for the mine was designed, using 4 exhusting fans.

The effect of cooling rate on the flotation behaviour of copper slags of flash smelter plant in Samsun was investigated. Fresh molten slag was solidified in laboratory scale in three different ways. All the samples were characterized by chemical and mineralogical analyses. The chemical analyses showed that samples prepared from fresh slag had 0.9 to 1 % Cu with 40 % Fe and 30 to 32 % SO2. Old pit slag samples contained between 1 to 3% copper. Microphotographs showed that rapidly cooled slags showed fine size distributions, e.g. the copper grains in granulated slag had sizes in 1-2 microns. On the other hand, the size of copper grains in slowly cooled slags increased above 40 microns. Flotation tests carried out by using potassium amyl xanthate and Flotanol-C showed that slowly cooled slag reduced the copper losses in the tailing and improved the grade of concentrate. Under the light of laboratory investigation, the pit dimensions of Samsun Plant have been modified which resulted in a pronounced improvement of the grade and recovery of concentrate produced at Samsun slag flotation circuit.

Gangue-cemented paste backfill (GCPB), is a well-established green mining technology and significantly improves the recovery rate of mineral resources, prevents mine dynamic disasters, reduces surface subsidence, and consumes a considerable amount of solid waste. The addition of an early strength agent as an additive in cement-based materials provides several security, technical, and economic advantages. In this study, the early strength agent on the early age (3, 7 and 28 days) strength of GCPB is evaluated experimentally. The GCPB specimens have an initial sodium sulfate early strength agent concentration of 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%, and the obtained samples were analyzed by testing for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The test results show that the UCS of the GCPB specimens with sodium sulfate is much higher than that of the blank specimens. When cured for 3 days and 7 days, the strength of GCPB with 2% sodium sulfate increased the most, by 131% and 116% respectively. When cured for 28 days, the strength of GCPB with 1% sodium sulfate increased by 135%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the GCPB with 1% and 2% sodium sulfate had better internal structure compactness, thicker acicular crystals, and more flocs. As a kind of early strength agent, sodium sulfate can react with calcium hydroxide to generate calcium dihydrate sulfate and then react with calcium aluminate; the hydration product (C3A) quickly generates calcium sulfoaluminate hydrate (AFt) needle-shaped crystals, forming an early skeleton and improving the early strength.

During the last decade grassroots minerals education programs have blossomed throughout the United States and in other countries. At the same time an environmental education movement has been gaining momentum. While this offers a unique opportunity to share the mining industry’s story, it also has some potential pitfalls. In this paper the authors will discuss some of the benefits of participating in environmental education and provide some practical tips for success, based on New Mexico experiences. It will conclude with a presentation on a successful environmental education program at Heights Middle School in Farmington New Mexico.

Resin bolt performance is dependent on the size of the resin annulus, i.e., the difference between the hole and bolt radii. The majority of the millions of resin roof bolts installed each year in the United States employ an annulus of 3.175 or 4.775 mm (0.125 or 0.188 in.). Short encapsulation pull tests with resin annuli of 3.175 and 2.413 mm (0.125 and 0.095 in.) resisted an average of 0.08 t/grouted mm (2.25 st/grouted in.) with no significant variation. Resin loses to simulated fractures increased as annulus size decreased.

Outokumpu Electronics has designed a new on-line coal slurry ash analyzer, based on an instrument developed at Michigan Technological University. The primary goal was to build an accurate instrument at the lowest possible cost. The instrument determines ash content from measurements of X-ray backscatter, iron K, fluorescence, and low-energy y-ray absorption. It is capable of measuring the ash content with a standard error of 1.1% ash over an analysis range of 9-21% ash and 7-22% solids. The analyzer was tested on coals from United States, Poland, Great Britain and the USSR.
