Introduction Mine sampling determines the practicality of any mining operation. Improper sampling can result in an incorrect appraisal of present production and future potential. Therefore, the mine department in charge of ore-reserve calculations and mine sampling should be overseen by competent and experienced professionals with technical backgrounds qualifying them to produce accurate results. Sampling is a process by which portions of an ore body are collected and analyzed to estimate the average mineral content of the entire ore body. It is incorrect to assume that a large number of samples eliminates any errors in the sampling method. To obtain unbiased samples, proper sample location with respect to rock type and mineralization is just as important. The sampling procedure must yield correct results for the type of mineral deposit, and careful consideration should be given to whether or not the sampling technique has been developed to an extent sufficient to eliminate as much human error and bias as possible. Only after the ore has been mined and milled is the sampling accuracy known. Sampling also provides information about the bulk composition of the ore for mineralogical and metallurgical tests that determine the economic ore-waste boundaries and the geologic trends for exploration. Actual mining plans can be developed from this information to maximize profits. Accurate sampling is critical, and thus must be approached in a scientific manner. Sampling Techniques Sampling practices and techniques are as varied as the mines in which they are used. The method(s) chosen must be tailored to suit the company and mining needs. For instance, tabular uranium deposits, vein gold deposits, and porphyry copper deposits pose special problems in conducting unbiased sampling. The mine geologist or engineer in charge must develop a sampling method, test it in a sample area, and then critically evaluate the results. If the results from the test area are accurate within the economic limits established by the company, they then may be adopted for general use in the mine. Four routine sampling methods are suitable for specific sampling objectives in the daily mine routine: (1) channel sampling, (2) chip sampling, (3) grab sampling, and (4) bulk sampling. The final sampling results depend upon how the four methods are combined to accurately determine the grade of the ore body. When used in conjunction with each other during different stages of mine development, the channel, chip, grab, and bulk sampling methods provide an in-house check or a comparison by which mining methods and sampling procedures can be evaluated. However, the most valid check is based upon the daily mill production. Channel Sampling Channel samples consist of cuttings collected from a groove cut into the rock about 102 mm (4 in.) wide and 19 mm (0.75 in.) deep. Various tools ranging from a 1.8-kg (4-lb) hammer and moil to a pneumatic chisel can be used to cut the sample. Accessibility and rock hardness determine the applicable sampling tools. Before attempting to take a sample, the rock surface must be cleaned thoroughly; the method of cleaning depends upon the amount of mine dust accumulated on the surface or the degree of alteration of the rock surface. Typical cleaning methods 'employ a wire brush, water, or chipping a fresh surface. Next, the sample outline is marked on the prepared surface, taking care to choose appropriate sample loca- tions. After determining the proper sample outline and length, the sample can be chiseled out, catching the rock fragments on a canvas tarpaulin on the floor, in a powder box, in a canvas bag to avoid contamination, or by some other suitable means to capture all of the sample. Vertical veins present a special problem because the drift's back usually is arched, not square. For example, Fig. 1 shows that if sample intervals are measured from A' to D', the length of the sample interval is greater than the true vein width, resulting in an incorrect calculation of the ore reserves. The correct method would collect three samples at A'-B', B'-C', and C'-D', using either actual measurements in the mine represented by A-B, B-C, and C-D or trigonometric calculations to determine the true ore thickness. Then, each sample can be weighted by grade and true thickness for the vein. Channel lengths usually are a maximum of 1.5 m (5 ft), and it is good practice to divide longer samples into smaller intervals according to structures, changes in rock types, or differences in rock hardnesses. The influence of those features on the mineralization then can be determined. Chip Sampling Chip sampling is a variation of channel sampling used when the rock is too hard to channel sample economically or when little variation in the mineral content indicates that this sampling method will yield results similar to those of channel sampling. Rather than cutting a channel in the rock, small chips are flaked off at regular intervals over the entire face or area being the mine. sampled. Care must be taken to assure that the sample is representative of variations in the rock hardness and type. hi^ method is fast and useful in preliminary evaluations, but it should not be used for quantitative ore-reserve calculations. Grab Sampling Grab sampling is a fast method for double checking either channel or chip-sampling procedures, and, in some instances, mine production can be estimated from carefully taken grab samples. Grab sampling takes equal amounts of material at selected intervals over a mine dump, a muck pile, or from an ore car to estimate its Channel Sampling mineral content. Generally, this method is not considered reliable. Many independent variables can affect this type of sampling process. El Teniente Mine of Codelco-Chile, located at Los Andes Range of Mountains, 90 kilometers South far from Santiago, the capital city, has been exploited for more than 90 years, with over 1000 million tonnes of copper ore extraction. No doubt, this particular record, has been possible to achieve due to an efficient combination of human and technological efforts in the exploitation of one of the biggest ore deposits of the world. Throughout times, the exploitation has evolved from a mainly manual one to a highly mechanized exploitation. Notwithstanding, different and several geomechanical problems that occurred in one of its areas, increased the risks to personnel that should normally operate large equipments in its working face. This last condition, forced El Teniente mine to design and develop systems and technologies that would allow the use of tele-operated LHD, picking hammers and drilling equipment (jumbos) from a safe zone. Currently, El Teniente Mine is using in its extractive works equipment such as LHD, picking hammers, and drilling Jumbos, that can be manually or teleoperated commanded from a Central Control Room located one kilometer away from the production area. In general, a new technological era has been opened in the mining exploitation at El Teniente: the exploitation era with telecommanded robots.

Drill cores from uranium roll-front deposits, hosted in lower Cretaceous strata, were examined from the proposed Dewey Burdock in-situ uranium recovery site in the northern part of the Edgemont uranium district, South Dakota. Uraninite (UO2), coffinite U(SiO4)0.9(OH)0.4, and doloresite (H8V6O16) occur as pore-occluding cements within the Fall River Formation in the Dewey area. In contrast, within the Lakota Formation in the Burdock area, uranium (with very little vanadium) is absorbed onto woody fragments and amorphous carbonaceous material in pressure-solution seams. Both areas have typical uranium roll-front mineralogy with 0.5 wt. % pyrite in the reduced solid phase and no pyrite in the oxidized solid phase. The groundwater at the ore zone is not oxygenated, so the uranium is relatively insoluble. Uranium in solution in ground waters is <10µg/L at Dewey and <22 µg/L at Burdock. Micromineralogic and geochemical data are being used to understand water/rock interactions, uranium distribution and movement, and as input factors for predictive reactive transport models.

The rational and optimal determination of the design of a mining exploitation is a very intricate and difficult problem : the parameters are numerous, some technical, some economic or technico-economic which cannot be fully controlled; beside, deposits are estimated from very limited information and the choice criteria are not always quantitative, the economic context has to be anticipated by several years, and even the technological limits can change tomorrow. So, although very clever and performing numerical algorithms have been developed in recent years for open-pit design, we consider that this problem has not really been solved satisfactorily until now. The reasons are that people have concentrated their efforts on informatical algorithmical problems, and have assumed that the technical and economical data are well defined at the time of the study, which is generally not true. In particular, the mere fact of assigning dollar- values to blocks in order to maximize the total cash-flow is generally unrealistic because of the uncertainty of the data used. Consequently, the significance of the unique pit obtained as a result of these algorithms is questionable.

The objective of this research was to investigate the possible application of integrated circuits to the concentration of talc from the Valmalenco mine, located in northern Italy. The investigation was aimed at producing a high-grade product (low in impurities such as iron and carbonate) that would be suitable for industrial applications. Because of the presence of accessory minerals, the talc concentrate from this ore is not, at the present time, suitable for industrial applications.

Montana Tech is located in the historic mining town of Butte, MT and is adjacent to the Orphan Boy mine. This abandoned underground mine will be the heat source for a down-hole heat exchanger (DHE)/heat pump system. The mine was abandoned in the 1950?s and has since filled with water to within approximately 30 m of the surface. The shaft is composed of a 245 m vertical shaft connected with horizontal crosscut drifts at 60 m and 150 m below the water level that connect to a large stope with approximately 1250 million liters of water at a consistent 75-78°F temperature. The intent is to build this heating system to augment or fully heat a newly built 2,000 m2 building on the Montana Tech campus. As designed the system uses ?off-the-shelf? parts making the basic configuration straightforward with the exception of the DHE?s which need to be placed into the vertical shaft. Because there is little or no examples of placing the heat exchangers in a vertical shaft, the primary focus of this work was to model the heat exchanger placement and configuration in the vertical shaft such that thermal currents develop between the stope and vertical shaft in, via the horizontal crosscut drifts, in order to move the water and thereby provide the required energy. This study includes the modeling of water flow, temperature profiles, and the heat contribution from the surrounding rock walls.

At the time they had been observed by several seismic observatories as natural earthquakes away more than 100km from Bibai City. These facts taught us that the occuerrence of failure yielded in underground opening that was accompanied with seismic wave could be observed by seismometer on the surface. After two years from this desaster, the study concerning to microseismic events generated from underground mining panels has been begun by researchers with heart-throb.

With the increasing demand for metalliferous and mineral raw materials, and consequent depletion of the global natural resource base, the possible utilization of secondary raw material sources is receiving more and more attention. In the present study, we present results from a detailed vanadium deportment study of three basic oxygen furnace slag (BOS) samples known to containing elevated bulk concentrations of vanadium (V). Complementary analytical methods that were used to quantify the abundance and composition of V-containing phases include SEM-based automated mineralogy, Xray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, and X-ray powder diffraction as well as electron probe microanalysis. The vanadium deportment was quantified using Monte-Carlo simulations of the data obtained from automated mineralogy and electron microprobe analysis. The total V concentrations identified by XRF are between 1.7 and 2.2 weight percent V. The most important hosts of vanadium are larnite-, brownmillerite- and portlandite-solid solutions. In two samples, calcium carbonates also significantly contribute to the V deportment, while wuestite, lime and native iron do not contribute significantly to the vanadium deportment. A thorough consistency check identifies considerable uncertainties in the density of the Vbearing phases as the most likely reason to explain remaining discrepancies between measured and calculated V values.

The exploration, geologist of necessity has to have a wide working knowledge of many specialties other than hiw own, First he has to use his own technical background to find a deposit,, of a mineral that is of interest, Once found, his problems are Just beginning, He then has to assume the role of an economist, an accountant, a mining engineer, a chemist, a metallurgist,, a salesman and what-have you, In the economic field, he must determine the marketability of either the ore or the refined mineral. He must gauge the supply and demand for the particular mineral he is interested in and make his best guess as to ultimate cash flow from a deposit over the estimated life of said deposit, He must then assume the role of a mining man and estimate cost of recovery, including an, evaluation of the most economic mining method, cost of supplies and labor, and again estimate a net cash flow. He must then determine amenability of ore to economic metallurgical methods, he must determine the legal status of the property involved and, after analysis of the specific situation, determine the best approach to a deal, After all of this he must sell it to the people who will put up the money and then put his deal together and sell it to the people who own the minerals, if that be necessary. Then he has to sit back, with crossed fingers and crossed legs wondering for some months, and in many cases even years, whether or not he is right. The expenditures required to open up a mine in this day of wild inflation are such that he has to be right, and the responsibilities are awesome.

Surface wettability, or contact angle, dictates a number of multiphase ensemble interactions that influence particulate dispersability and adhesion behavior (e.g., filler compatibility] in addition to a number of other phenomena including biocompatibility and bulk powder segregation. The wettability of particulate surfaces significantly impacts nearly all process industries; however, the available techniques to access this quantity are either relative, or tedious-and are application or industry specific. In this study, key features of existing techniques have been combined to design an improved method to delineate particle wettability that is simple, versatile and capable of providing reproducible measurements in an industrial environment.

In the mid-1970?s, the market value of tangible assets of S&P 500 companies far outstripped the value of intangible assets, including intellectual property (e.g., 83% tangible assets v. 17% intangible assets).1 By 2005, the picture was quite different. By that time and continuing to 2010, S&P 500 companies? market value of intangibles was about 80%, with tangible assets accounting for only 16% of market value.2 This swing highlights the importance in today?s world of understanding intellectual property rights and varying strategies and options for protecting them. This paper discusses intellectual property rights particularly patents and trade secrets, specifically: 1) types of intellectual property; 2) choosing the mode of intellectual property protection; 3) obtaining patent protection; and 4) using patents as a sword versus a shield.

Chloride leaching has many advantages compared with other alternative processes to cyanidation because it has increased metal solubility, improved redox behavior and high leaching rate properties. Also, chlorination is a nontoxic and environmentally friendly process, which is sought by the mining and metallurgy industry. In addition to these advantages, chloride is an effective reagent for the dissolving of metals from refractory ores and process residues that have trace amounts of valuable metals waiting to be valorized.

This paper describes a method to improve coal mine entry intersection design. The method considers the effect of in situ stresses, local geologic conditions, rock physical properties, and mining sequence. Development of the method is discussed, including the results of field instrumentation studies and numerical modeling investigations. Data required to evaluate the effects of roof span, mining sequence, entry orientation, and bolting patterns on intersection stability are also presented. Ground control studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in two underground mines in the Illinois Coal Basin have shown that in situ horizontal stresses and roof geology have a critical effect on intersection stability. Methods to reduce the adverse effects of these parameters are emphasized. Typical failure behavior associated with specific geologic and horizontal stress conditions is&apos; presented to illustrate proposed control methods to alleviate adverse ground conditions.

The factors which control chimney subsidence sinkhole development in weak rock were assessed by analyzing the characteristics of approximately 3000 chimney subsidence features along the Colorado Front Range. The area of study included features developed over abandoned mines in the Colorado Springs Coal Field, the Boulder Coal Field, and the Foothills District. The approximate locations of the areas studied are shown in Figure 1. Data were collected for sinkholes occurring over both room and pillar, and retreat mining areas in coal seams with a wide range of dips. The location, size, and approximate time of development of each sinkhole were documented. From these data, relationships were developed which describe the time rate of observable sinkhole development and the relative location of sinkhole development with respect to mined height, overburden thickness, and type of mining for relatively flat-lying coal seams. In addition, the observed locations of sinkhole development over steeply dipping coal seams were assessed for portions of the study area.

"Estimation of rock drillability is vital for mining and boring operations. For this purpose, many researchers have developed various models and equations to estimate rock drillability. Most of these models aim to determine the drillability of rock and the penetration rate by using the physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Although drillability primarily depends on rock properties, other parameters have an impact on drillability as well. One of these parameters is the rotation speed of the bit. This study investigates the effect of rotation speed of the bit on drilling performance. Drilling tests were performed in the laboratory using rotary core drilling and a diamond drilling machine. The relationships between the physical rock properties and the penetration rate were investigated on 15 different rock types and four different rotation speeds were applied to determine the effect of rotation speed of bit on drilling. The uniaxial compressive strength, density, and P wave velocity show strong correlations with the penetration rate. In addition, if the values of the physical and mechanical properties of the rock increase, the effect of the rotation speed on the penetration rate decreases, i.e., increasing the rotation speed of the bit slightly affects drillability on hard and solid formations. 1. Introduction Drilling is one of the most essential operations in the mining industry, beginning from the exploration phase and continuing throughout all stages of production to the end of mine life (Taheri et al. 2016). In addition, drilling is widely using in the construction industry and other engineering operations. Various drillholes (blastholes, injection holes, borehole, diamond wire holes in natural stone mines, etc.), are needed during development and production activities in underground and open-pit mines as well as in dam, tunnel, road construction and sewage systems. For effective drilling operations, it is first necessary to gather information about the formation to be drilled. Drilling should then be performed after selecting appropriate drilling equipment and drilling parameters (thrust, pressure, rotational speed, flushing). Prediction of the drillability of rocks is vital for planning and performing the drilling process. Although, drilling is affected by several factors, the most important ones are related to the geological and mechanical properties of formation (Protodyakonov 1963, Paone et al 1969, Tandanand and Unger 1975, Pathinkar and Misra 1976, Rabia 1985, Perrin et al 1977). Determining the penetration rate is vital for planning a project and calculating the operation costs. The prediction of drilling affects the selection of drilling equipment, the efficiency of drilling equipment, project costs and the process of drilling operations."

Gaby Copper Mining?s Gabriela Mistral property is located in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile, at an altitude of 2,660 m (8,727 ft) above sea level. The reserve contains an estimated 562 Mt (620 million st) of oxide ore with an average grade of 0.41 percent total copper. The mine went into production in 2008. Gaby Copper faced the problem of having no reliable way to measure the solids level. This is a challenge that exists throughout the mining industry, where dust in the air and accumulation of solids on a sensor make accurate measurements difficult in areas such as transfer chutes, the rock box underneath crushers, silos and anywhere else that information is needed on the level of solids. The next-generation technology in the Sitrans LR560 radar from Siemens addresses this challenge. With a frequency of 78 GHz ? higher than previous generations of radar ? it provides a more robust signal for measuring in areas where there are high levels of dust accumulation. The Sitrans LR560 provides a signal beam angle of four degrees, significantly narrower than any other product on the market can offer.

Thoron daughter WL&apos;s measured by alpha-spectroscopy and the Kusnetz method are about one-half those of radon daughter WL&apos;s in a uranium mine in Canada.1 A diffusion model can account for the relative concentrations.l Since the Kusnetz technique is most widely used for measuring radon daughter WL&apos;s in uranium mines, a general procedure is derived to extend this method to measurement of WL&apos;s of radon and thoron daughters in air containing their mixtures. Coté P. and Townsend M.G., 1981. A procedure is also suggested for counting radon and thoron daughters by 3-channel [a]-spectroscopy. Errors in WL(Rn) are calculated for standard radon daughter counting procedures when a-decay of both thoron and radon daughters is attributed to radon daughters alone. Providing overall counting times are short, [<]30 min, these errors are generally small. The precision of ß -counting methods is also investigated. A portable 3-channel alpha spectrometer for measurement of radon and thoron daughters in uranium mines or homes is described, Carson D.W., 1979. The computer programs for analyzing the data to give, depending on the mode employed, some or all of the concentrations RaA, RaB, RaC, ThB, ThC and WL of radon and thoron daughters by alpha spectrometric, modified Kusnetz, Rolle and Tsivolglov methods are presented.(l) A commercial apparatus, based on the above prototype, incorporating a microprocessor and built under contract to EMR is now available.(2) A number of personal radiation dosimeters for miners are now being tested in mines. One of these is the CEA dosimeter which uses the track-etch film method, Duport P., Chapuis A.M. and Pradel J., 1979. An apparatus for rapid reading of track-etch films by the spark technique has been described previously, Cross W.G. and Thomasino L., 1970 and Huang V.F., 1975. We have developed such an apparatus for rapid semi-automatic reading of films exposed to radiation from mixtures of radon and thoron daughters in CEA dosimeters. The films used, Kodak LR 115 Type II Strippable, may be stripped rapidly and easily, for counting after irradiation and developing, by use of a special punch and suction technique. The method promises to provide an inexpensive and rapid technique for reading large quantities of personal dosimeter films. However, the present CEA dosimeter has faults in design, leading to a contamination problem. Those films that show contamination cannot be read by automatic means. A commercial apparatus based on the above prototype spark counter and built under contract to EMR is now available.3 1. These computer programs are available on request. 2. In this work, the crystallization of Carnallite from waste brine of Qaidam Basin in Qinghai province was studied based on NaCl-KCl-MgCl2-H2O phase diagram. According to this study, a new crystallization pathway to recycling waste brine was developed. The carnallite salt was formed by using this technology during the waste brine evaporation. The experiment data shows that 5 tons of waste brine was required to form one ton of the carnallite. The average grade of carnallite prepared by using this procedure was about 19.40% of KCl, 16.92% of NaCl, 28.80% of MgCl2, and 0.82% of CaSO4. This study provides an opportunity to utilization of the waste brine.
