Gold deposits of the Carlin Trend occur within sedimentary rocks deposited across the Paleozoic continental margin. Lithologically dissimilar units, juxtaposed along the Roberts Mountains Thrust Fault system, constitute three distinct stratigraphic packages: autochthonous miogeoclinal carbonates, allochthonous eugeoclinal siliciclastic rocks, and an overlying coarse clastic overlap assemblage. Gold deposits occur within all three stratigraphic packages, with economic concentrations localized at structural and stratigraphic settings similar to those which host petroleum traps. Along structural breaks, gold is selectively concentrated within favorable stratigraphic units. Host stratigraphy controls the character of the ore, including average grade, grade variability, physical properties and metallurgical response.

China has made great progress in thick coal seam mining, commonly characterized by longwall top-coal caving mining and single-pass longwall mining with a large cutting height. At present, the maximum mining thickness of longwall top-coal caving reaches 20 m while that of single-pass longwall mining approaches 8.8 m. The top-coal caving–related technologies have significantly improved the mining efficiency of thick coal seams and have also made a great contribution to the centralized underground mining of coal. Thus, the number of underground coal mines is greatly reduced in China. However, due to the increase of the mining height and the changes in mining operations, the overburden movement caused by the mining of thick coal seams is more intense, and the influence scope is larger, which brings a series of new problems on ground control of longwall faces. The PT Freeport Indonesia‘s Deep Ore Zone(DOZ) copper deposit is located in the province of Irian-Jaya, Indonesia. Currently, a block cave mine is being developed around this deposit. Production is scheduled to start in year 2000 and to ramp up to25,000 tpd by year 2003. The air quantity requirement for this mine is equal to 780 m3/s. To supply this quantity, the mine will require five centrifugal fans (one 450 and four 750 kW fans). This study summarizes the technical aspects related to the installation and commissioning of one of these fans. The fan was installed on the surface in a parallel arrangement with two others. It has a design capacity of 240 m3/s of air at 2.2 kPa of static pressure. The study presents the installation details from the underground shaft excavation and portal development through fan testing and commissioning. It also presents the results of a monitoring system that was installed to determine the fan duties.

Nebraska’s largest voluntary site remediation project created a focus point for redevelopment and has spurred over $1 billion in economic investment within a 1-mile radius of the site. Asarco was faced with options of very expensive and uncertain facility upgrades or a shutdown. Local leaders, Asarco, and regulators worked together to convert a controversial and complex site to a park-like redevelopment area with numerous long-term benefits to the City and the environment.

The main electrophysical properties, i.e., dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of pure calcite, quartz and wollastonite mineral samples were measured and their triboelectric charge attributes were investigated by contacting minerals particles with different tribochargers made from different materials. In addition the energetic work function values for mineral samples were estimated due to their acquisition charge. Besides, the behaviour of triboelectrically charged of different particle size fractions of mineral samples were inferred. Finally an attempt were made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a real carbonate ore. The results exposed good prospects to beneficate the examined minerals by triboelectric separation.

The molecular structures of isobutyl xanthate (IBX), diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), O-isobutyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IBETC), O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thionocarbamate (IBECTC) and O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thiourea (IBECTU) were fully optimized using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level with the integral equation formalism for the polarizable continuum model (IEF-PCM) in the aqueous phases. The effects of the polar groups in these thiol molecules on their collecting performances were determined by the energies and compositions of frontier molecular orbitals and the atomic charge values. Our results indicate that the sulfur atom(s) in IBX, DIBDTP, IBETC, IBECTC, or IBECTU molecule is the centre of reactivity. And the collecting abilities of these reagents for copper sulfide minerals follow the order as: IBX > IBECTU ? DIBDTP ? IBECTC > IBETC, and the order of their selectivities against pyrite is suggested as: IBX < DIBDTP < IBETC < IBECTU < IBECTC. The theoretical analysis provides an insight into the collecting powers of these collectors, and offers an atomic scale approach to understand the experimental data available in the literature. Fourteen samples of pyrite-bearing Archean greenstone rock (d < 6.35 mm, 0.04% < St < 1.22%) were characterized (particle size, chemistry, mineralogy) and subjected to laboratory dissolution testing. The only sulfide and carbonate minerals identified were pyrite and siderite, respectively. Quartz, chlorite and sericite typically comprised 90 to 98 percent of the mineral content. For the first 60 weeks, seven samples with sulfur contents less than or equal to 0.16% produced drainage pH values exceeding 6.0. Over this period, six of the seven samples with sulfur contents greater than or equal to 0.20% produced drainage pH below 6.0, with minimum values ranging from 3.2 to 4.7. The seventh sample (0.72% S) had a siderite content of 18%. Small amounts of magnesium and, to a lesser degree, calcium carbonates present in the siderite apparently dissolved to neutralize acid and maintain drainage pH above 6.0. Sulfate release rates generally increased as sulfur content increased, and the rates of pyrite oxidation estimated for individual samples were roughly half to five times that reported in the literature for the abiotic oxidation of pyrite by oxygen. Observed neutralization potentials ranged from 0.2 to 2.0 g CaCO3/g rock.

PB is providing engineering services to New York City Transit (NYCT) for the rehabilitation of the 59th Street/Columbus Circle Station Complex that services over 150,000 customers daily. The project involves structural repairs, modifications and new construction requiring underpinning and temporary supports, custom framing details, and construction staging procedures to meet stringent limitations within the operating transit station and around the Columbus Circle street intersections.

In concrete lined tunnels, formwork removal timing may be controversial. Contractors seek to strip the form as soon as possible, and designers seek to keep the formwork in place as long as practical to protect the fresh concrete. Formwork removal timing is normally specified as a function to its insitu concrete strength. This approach may work for smaller diameter tunnels, but fallacy occurs when applying this approach to larger diameter tunnels, since a larger diameter would experience more displacement than a smaller diameter tunnel from its own weight. Excessive deformation may fail a tunnel to meet its roundness criterion and overstress the lining causing cracking or falling from the crown. This paper presents a contractual mechanism to mitigate this issue.

The broad front concept is based on the principle that gasification can be achieved more efficiently and completely from a plane broad combustion front in contrast to other geometries obtainable with current methods of gasification. By restricting combustion to a plane broad front, the ideal condition for gasification is achieved. A plane broad combustion front can be developed in coal by initiating and propagating combustion from the walls of an oriented channel and collecting product gases from another similarly oriented channel. Flow will then be directed along the highest permeability of the coal bed, the available cross-sectional area for fluid flow is substantially increased and, more importantly, the increased flow will be uniformly distributed throughout the whole mass of coal. The success of the method is greatly dependent on how well an initial and rigorous permeability survey and associated corrective measures yield a well-characterized coal bed. To maintain uniform reaction rates, the advance of the combustion front is located with pressure- or mass flow-transducers. These sensors are then connected to servo-controlled mufflers for controlling segments of the fire front which are advancing ahead of others. Finally, the development of the concept to overcome problems of roof collapse, reactant and product gas leakages, and water invasion are briefly summarized.

An alum/sulfur deposit (USDA organic registered) was mined underground for alunite (K,Na) Al3 (SO4)2 (OH)6 from the early 1900s to the 1930s. It is now being mined as an open pit quarry. A larger assemblage of minerals is included with this method (Alunite, Potassium?Alum, Jarosite, Gypsum, Native Sulfur and K-feldspar). This assemblage of minerals provides the necessary requirements as a Volcanic Soil Conditioner Sulfur-Potash. Heart of Nature? Company has been marketing this product to farmers on the west coast as a (1) pH reducer, (2) soluble sulfur and potassium source for plant growth and (3) soluble calcium. Recently, a new market has been tapped. This product has been found to solve many odor, bacteria and algae problems faced in the dairy industry.

This paper discusses the role of mineral-adapted acidiphilic microorganism Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans on the beneficiation of arsenopyrite containing multisulfides (pyrite and chalcopyrite). Adaptation to minerals altered the surface properties of the microorganism. Bacterial adaptation to arsenopyrite and controlled bacterial adhesion to mineral surfaces lead to selectivity in arsenopyrite separation. Bioremoval of arsenic ions (both arsenite and arsenate ions) by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is also discussed.

During the recent expansion of precipitate copper production at the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation, Santa Rita, New Mexico, local studies of the dump leaching process were intensified. As these studies progressed it became apparent that a reliable method for locating leach solutions within the dump was required, since the contact between leach solutions and the copper-bearing material would determine, in great part, the recovery of values. In the past, the problem of determining leach solution contact has been attacked by various methods, including destructive testing (dump dissection), indirect observation (such as chloride or dye tracers), and mathematical or laboratory model studies. These methods have not proved completely satisfactory for the studies now being developed. Investigation of methods for in situ observation of leach solutions led to consideration of radiation logging in drill holes, which are petro¬leum exploration and development techniques for locating fluids and measuring porosity in the subsurface. Standard oil field logging equipment was leased, modified, and tested. After successful testing, the equipment was purchased for additional studies. Applications and results of the methods are described in this paper.

Temporary local seismic networks were installed in western Crete, in central Crete, and on Gavdos, an island south of western Crete, in order to image shallow seismically active zones of the Hellenic subduction zone. Data acquisition was divided in four campaigns through the years 1996 to 2001. More than 4000 events in the magnitude range between 0.5 and 4.8 were detected and localized. The resulting hypocenter distribution allows the localization of seismically active zones in the area of central Crete from the Mediterranean Ridge to the Cretan Sea. The comparison of the hypocenter distribution and the structure has allowed intraplate and interplate seismicity to be distinguished. A southwards dipping zone of high seismicity within the Aegean lithosphere is found south of central Crete in the region of the Ptolemy trench. Between 20 and 40 km depth beneath central Crete, the Aegean lithosphere appears to be seismically inactive. Especially for the year 2001, 1560 events were localized, by the seismic network installed on Messara, central Crete. Most of the seismic events were located, as expected, in the South region of central Crete. National Observatory of Athens (NOA) maintains a permanent seismic network in Greece. In this work a comparison of the earthquake epicenters obtained from both the NOA network and the BOCHUM-TUC network is presented.

The Oglebay Norton Company has traditionally been a supplier of metallurgical grade fluorspar gravel to the American steel industry and, in the early sixties, fluorspar pellets were entered into the market. The gravel has been imported from Mexico, the pellets were produced by the Minerva Company in southern Illinois. While the acceptance of the pellets by the industry was satisfactory, overall marketing considerations caused the Minerva Company to discontinue the pelletizing operations. Thus it was that Oglebay Norton came to the decision to revive earlier plans to produce fluorspar agglomerates. A survey of the market and related factors led into two basic conclusions: 1) Because of steel plant safety considerations, flat, pillow- shaped briquets were preferable to easily rolling, marble-like pellets. 2) Briquets competitive with gravel could be produced by cutting imported, low-duty, acid grade spar to metallurgical grade by limestone and binders. A plant was built in Brownsville, Texas, and started operations in early 1970.

The Upgraded Coal Interest Group (UCIG), focuses on clean, low-cost options for coal-based power generation via pre-combustion, co-firing and reburn options. Its mission is to preserve and expand the economic use of coal for energy. By reducing the fuel costs and environmental impacts of coal-fired power generation, existing units become more cost effective and thus new units utilizing advanced combustion technologies are more likely to be coal-fired. Two great forces are reshaping the power generation industry, the Clean Air Act Amendment and deregulation of generation. The Clean Air Act Amendment is forcing change by making it necessary for power producers to plan for reducing emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides and possibly trace elements. At the same time, deregulation of generation is forcing utilities to focus their attention closely on the short term impact of any change on cost of power. Fuel is a utility&apos;s largest cost element; maximum fuel flexibility will be a utility&apos;s best weapon in an environment of rapid change. In a regulated environment, a utility was limited in how involved he might get into fuel supply, in a purely deregulated environment he need only be guided by the impact on the bottom line. It is clear that these two forces will promote a close look at factors such as coal upgrading which can have an impact on the availability of low sulfur coal or emission of NOX and trace elements.

This paper describes the way in which mathematical models can be and have been used in dynamic optimization. Both off-line and on-line model applications are described.
