An in-situ leaching technology was developed for copper oxide minerals at the Van Dyke deposit at Miami, Arizona. This paper discusses the process developed and the activities that occurred. Specifically, the activities of well installation, deposit data acquisition, leach testing and equipment development are reviewed. Installation and operation of the test facility are described.

The single most unique design feature of the Centralia Coal Mine is the public information program. Just what the heck does public information have to do with the development of a coal mine? The utilities of today have had to build larger and larger plants to keep down the costs of power to the consumer. The large plants require huge amounts of capital, take up large areas of real estate, consume unprecedented amounts of coal, and generate large quantities of waste products which have to be reckoned with. Coal mines supplying these plants have also increased in size and production to meet the power plants' unending appetite for coal. This means the disturbance of great areas of land and significant alterations to the landscape. Today's public is greatly concerned about the environment in which he is living. The great size of a power plant with its large stacks, coal piles, and the coal mine with its large earth movers, disturbed acreages and the resulting waste products of both operations appears to present a threat to his environment. Because of this,' many power plants and coal mines are having public acceptance problems. This has resulted in the passage of stringent legislation and in some cases brought upon construction delays for major power plants.

INTRODUCTION The continuous mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners which were designed for increased productivity have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. Inhalation of this respirable dust by miners causes the Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Concern for CWP increased in the United States following a 1963-65 survey that showed definite x-ray evidence of CWP in 9.8 percent of working miners and in 18.2 percent of nonworking miners in the Appalachian bituminous coal region (Breslin and Niewiadomski, 1982). One of the major objectives of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was the prevention of CUP. This law initially limited the daily average exposure of coal miners to 3 mg/m3 of respirable dust. However, following the results of a probabilistic model developed by Jacobsen, et. al. in 1971, the limit was reduced to a mass concentration of 2 mg/m3 unless quartz content exceeds 5 percent, a rare occurrence in mines. Based on x-ray categorization prior to death it is believed that the mass concentration in the respirable fraction is a parameter of primary interest for hygenic evaluation of dust exposure. Elorgan, Burgess and Jacobson (1973) suggested that the quantity of inhaled dust, although influential is not the only aspect of exposure which is significant in producing CWP. Miners working in higher rank coal (anthracite) mines are more susceptible to CWP (Morgan, Burgess and Jacobson, 1973). This also confirms the findings of the British (Bennett, Dick and Kaplan, 1979 and Hurley, et. al., 1979) and Germany (Reisner and Rubock, 1977). Based on the cy to toxicological evidence Reisner and Rubock (1979) suggested that when coal properties are similar, increasing quartz and mineral content increases toxicity. David, Ottery and Le ?oux (1975) examined that as the severity of the CWP increased the retention of the coal dust content in the pulmonary region remained the same, while that of quartz content increased significantly . Leiteritz, Baur and Bruckman (1971) studied the various components of coal dust and showed that coal particles comprised a smaller fraction of the mass of fine dust than did particles , of quartz and minerals. It is ironic that quartz and mineral matter both comprise smaller fractions of the higher rank coal dust (Dodgson, et. al., 1971 and Dwiggins, 1981). Airborne particulates can be generated by combustion processes, comminution, or materials handling, and regulation of these particulates by EPA are becoming progressively more stringent. Regulations will soon include “nanoparticulates,” particles finer than 100 nanometers, which are believed to have significant health effects due to their high surface area and reactivity. Although it was argued that nanoparticulate concerns were only important for combustion, studies here have shown that material handling and comminution release significant quantities of nanoparticles into the air. Laboratory studies have shown that sodium metasilicate reduced airborne particles finer than 10 micrometers (PM10) by 86% and particles finer than 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) by 80% for iron ore. Additional studies were conducted which revealed that nanoparticulate emissions were present in the types of operations conducted at pyrometallurgical facilities.

The Melbourne City Link project includes two three-lane highway tunnels, 1.6 and 3.4km long, respectively, which are both approximately 16 meters wide and 9 meters high. The tunnels will be excavated through interbedded, moderately to highly jointed siltstones and sandstones of the Silurian Age Melbourne Mudstone formation over the major parts of their lengths. The strength of the intact rock varies from less than 5 MPa to greater than 70 MPa. Based on the available information regarding the performance of large span tunnels in weak rock, it was considered that the commonly applied empirical design guidelines for tunnel support, based on rock mass classification systems, should be augmented by more explicit design methods. The support design was, therefore, validated by analytical procedures, including numerical analyses, which are described in this paper.

Milling has traditionally been considered more art than science. In the last 10 years, significant improvements in process equipment have been made and we are finally taking significant steps toward approaching grinding as a science. Two machines have been at the center of this development. These are the roll press and the high efficiency separator. The former can be considered as a new technology or adaptation of existing i.e. roller mill. The latter is clearly an improvement of existing technology. Other machines have been introduced to a lesser degree and later. Among these are the CKP and Horomill. The purpose of this paper is to provide an over- view of the currently available modifications for operating systems and options for new milling circuits with some comments on their application and history.

The present study examines the nutrients and micronutrients availability of uncultivated soils originated from different parent rocks. The study areas include four types of parent rocks with different geological origin, from acidic to ultramafic. The parent rock mineralogy and the nutrients available in soils are in strong relation-ship. Mineralogy, particle size distribution and chemical composition of the soil samples were studied jointly with the nutrient content of soil solution. High magnesium availability in soils of Anogia area is related with the alteration products of the ultramafic rocks. Potassium content of the soils exhibits no relation with the geology of the area. Micronutrients, iron and manganese, shows strong dependence to the bulk chemistry and mineralogy of the parent rock material. In contrast no interrelation detected between zinc and copper availability in soil and parent material.

During drilling of deep boreholes, local mechanical failures of the wellbore walls may occur due to the inability of the incompetent overburden and reservoir rocks to withstand drilling-induced changes of the stress environment. At present, borehole failure mechanisms in three-dimensional stress fields are poorly understood. Our experimental investigations based on 3-D physical models demonstrate the stabilizing effect of the intermediate principal stress. The latter may play a dominant role in maintaining the integrity of the stress relieving failure zone around the borehole. However, this will depend on the stress anisotropy, the angle of hole deviation and on the angle of internal friction. Our tests also indicate that the failure zone can accomodate high extensional strains. Finally, relations between the physical models and closed-form elasto-plastic solutions are discussed.

Recently water insoluble alcoholic solutions of alkyl hydroxamic acid collectors have been shown to be particularly effective in the flotation of coarse feed material sampled from phosphate operations in Florida, North Carolina and Utah (Miller et al., 2000). The experimental results indicate that high separation efficiencies can be achieved in single stage flotation with these new collectors. In some cases the concentrate grade reached 34% P2O5 with 93% recovery from single stage bench scale flotation experiments. Critical aspects of the composition and structure of these new collectors are discussed with respect to their effectiveness in phosphate flotation. The wetting characteristics at fluorapatite, francolite, dolomite and quartz surfaces are being investigated with the new collector. Finally, other surface chemistry considerations in the development of these new collectors for phosphate flotation are discussed.

Los Pelambres, 200 km north of Santiago, Chile, is the latest in a series of mega-projects developed in this part of the world. While most of its predecessors are spread over open desert, the Los Pelambres mine is nestled inside a narrow alpine valley high in the Andean Mountains. To handle the daunting task of transporting the mined copper ore more than 12 km and 1,400 vertical meters downhill to the concentrator plant, a gigantic belt conveyor system (capacity of 8700 mtph, 1800 mm wide ST 7800 steel cord belt, 2.5m diameter pulleys, an elaborate braking system including a mechanical failsafe and large reducers with a total installed drive power of 25,000 kW) has been employed. Many of these components have pushed the limits of conventional belt conveyor design.

Generally speaking, erosion, as a process which entails degradation of surface layers of earth under the influence of the mechanical energy of surface waters, and from the point of view of biosphere sustainability, is a harmful process. This is absolutely true when agricultural and forest areas are concerned. However, if erosion is viewed selectively, this general definition about its harm raises serious questions. In other words, the erosion which takes place in the terrains where there is no vegetation because of the geological composition of the soil, does no harm. On the contrary, if the mineralogical composition of such terrains is characterized by a presence of precious and rare metals, erosion can be very useful. It contributes to the creation of new alluvial deposits of these metals in the waters in the plain land. It is here that torrents from hills come down and cause erosion. And finally, if there were no erosion, there would be no renewable deposits of gravel and sand.

Silver contained in zinc calcines undergoes several phase changes as it proceeds through the leaching circuit of a roast-leach-electrowin zinc plant. In this study, the flotation response of silver, from leach residues prepared under a variety of carefully controlled operating conditions in the pilot plant has been examined. Flotation of neutral leach residue is shown to be technically viable and to merit consideration for those plants without a high-acid leach circuit, but having significant silver values in the feed. Residue leach conditions must be kept slightly acidic to promote the formation of Ag2S, (AgCu) 2S and Ag2S rims on residual unroasted sphalerite, while simultaneously avoiding the hydrolysis of soluble iron, which depresses silver recovery and grade. Factors to be considered during integration of a flotation process into an electrolytic zinc plant are discussed.

Many organisations, including those in the resources industry have Board-level endorsed principles on sustainability. A key challenge, however, is how to systematically integrate these high-level principles into the design and operation of mineral processing plants. In an effort to meet this challenge the Sustainable Operations framework, called SUSOP®, was conceived and developed through the Corporative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) in Australia. Somewhat analogous to HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Studies) which is well entrenched in the resources industry, the key aim of SUSOP® is to produce a holistic, systematic and rigorous methodology for identifying and assessing sustainability opportunities and risks. This paper argues the need for such a sustainability framework, presents the key elements of SUSOP®, highlights how case studies enhanced its development and articulates the reasons why such a framework will have growing importance into the future.

The flotation separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is investigated with chelating agents and neutral oil as synergic collectors. Test results indicated that a-nitroso-ß-naphthol has a strong collectivity for wolframite and selectivity against fluorite and quartz. The 8-hydroxyquinoline has collectivity and selectivity also. They both have a better activity than sodium oleate. However, the cupferron is slightly inferior. The synergism of chelating agents and neutral oil looks promising, especially for fine wolframite particles. The activation effect of Fe2+ and Ca2+ ions on separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is slight. The UV absorb-spectra measurements showed that the adsorption of chelating agent on wolframite is multilayer, and flotation behavior is related to chemisorption. The chelating agent which bonds to Fe and Mn sits on the wolframite surface, and the reaction between Mn2+ ion with collector is more significant. The essentials affecting reagent activities are the bonding factor and the hydrophobic factor. These factors are discussed by structure-activity relationship theory. The synergism of neutral oil is a secondary collector likely to lengthen the hydrocarbon chain of chelating agents.

The objectives for closure of a hard rock mine include minimizing long term environmental liability, attaining regulatory compliance, and maintaining geotechnical stability, while closing as cost-effectively as possible. Proper planning for closure should come during the feasibility study, design and permitting phases, and during operations as updates. The lack of a proper or updated closure plan can result in severe environmental and economic consequences. Effective mine closure is the result of a combination of innovative concepts, long-term commitments, and multi-party cooperation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss concepts, commitments, and cooperation as they relate to an effective closure plan.

Ore bodies which were once uneconomical to mine by conventional methods such as tunneling or open pits, have become attractive due to the development of nonconventional techniques, involving considerably less capital expenditure. Technologies such as uranium solution mining or in-situ leaching, have enabled commercial scale mining and milling of relatively small ore pockets of lower grade, and may make a significant contribution to overall U.S. uranium supplies during the next 20 years. Commercial size solution mining production facilities have operated since late 1975. Solution mining involves the pumping of ground water, fortified with oxidizing and complexing agents into an ore body, leaching and solubilizing the uranium in-situ, and then pumping the solutions to the surface where they are fed to a processing plant. Processing involves ion exchange, precipitation, calcining, and packaging operations. This paper presents an overview of the solution mining process and the health physics monitoring programs developed over the last four years at several production facilities as a result of the radiological character of these processes. Although many radiological aspects of the process are similar to that of conventional mills, conventional-type tailings as such are not generated. Some special monitoring considerations are presented which are required due to the manner in which radon gas is evolved in the process and the unique aspects of controlling solution flow patterns underground. An overview of the major aspects of the health physics compliance and monitoring programs that have been developed are discussed.

Separating oil shale from waste material or into high- and low-grade fractions can have a major economic influence on the surface retorting process. Different shale rock components vary significantly in physical and surface chemical properties, such as specific gravity, color, and water wettability. Various techniques that use the differences in one or more of these properties have been proposed to preconcentrate oil shale before retorting. This article discusses some proposed techniques, such as gravity separation, sorting, and froth flotation. Retorting oil shale is the most common method for recovering oil from the rock. This process is accomplished either underground (in situ) or above ground (ex-situ or surface retorting). Both techniques have serious limitations, such as low recoveries in the underground method and the ability to process rich shales only in the above ground retorting method. Also, environmental problems are associated with both techniques. Some of these limitations could be overcome if feed to the retorts is of consistent grade. This could be achieved by selecting appropriate sites for in situ retorting and selective mining for surface oil shale retorting. Both of these, however, would have a serious economic impact on shale oil recovery. Obviously, little control can be exercised over preparing feed material in the in situ retorting process, but beneficiation of oil shale could definitely be advantageous in surface retorting, and should have positive influence on the overall economics of recovering oil from the shales. For example, preconcentration of mined shale could result not only in reduced costs for materials handling, but also in waste disposal costs, since waste characteristics before and after the retorting process are significantly different. Upgrading the oil shale might also allow substitution of alternate technology for retorting as well as extend the process to recover oil from marginal deposits. Also, the separated material may become a potential source for recovering other values from shale deposits. Overall, the incentives for preconcentration are to reduce costs and improve thermal efficiency of the recovery process. With the trend in the coal mining industry pushing towards improved productivity and greater production, the number and size of longwall panels is increasing rapidly. The development and mining of large longwall panels causes unique problems in the provision of adequate ventilation at the working faces. Because of the transient nature of the longwall panel, and the difficult field conditions for ventilation measurements, detailed pressure and volume surveys are often not conducted around the longwall circuit. This is unforlunate because the highest resistance airway in longwall mines is typically the longwall tailgate, which frequently represents the only unregulated split in the ventilation network. This paper examines data collected from ventilation studies of longwall panels at nine mines. The variation in airway resistance, ventilating pressure and airflow is examined and compared with specific factors such as airway dimensions, ground conditions and support type used.
