The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner being considered for installation at Sunshine Precious Metals Inc. 's Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause-and-effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feed grade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences are useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

Froth flotation is widely used for separating particulate materials from one another in aqueous media. The basis of this important separation process is to control the hydrophobicity of particles. However, it is difficult to predict the kinetics of flotation based on contact angle (?), which is a thermodynamic property. A solution to this difficulty would be to develop a relationship between ? and the gradient of the hydrophobic forces across the solid-liquid and bubble-liquid interfaces. Such information can be obtained using the surface force apparatus (SFA), the atomic force microscope (AFM), and the thin film balance (TFB). The present communication reviews the results of the measurements conducted using these methods, and offers a methodology for deriving a rate equation for bubble-particle interactions

The use of computer models to design ultimate pit limit of an open pit mine during its feasibility study has become an emphasized procedure in mining. It is a normal practice in open pit mine design to generate the most profitable final pit limit. The limitations of designing this optimal pit limit have been the requirement of significant computing efforts as well as the use of complicated operations research techniques. In an attempt to describe a computer method that has an easy conceptualization and is able to provide a precise and desirable solution, a new technique is developed. The ultimate pit limit problem is formulated as a large scale transportation problem. The formulation is based on the use of a three dimensional block model to represent an ore body and surrounding materials. The solution technique is developed through solving the dual system of the formulated problem by using the adapted simplex algorithm of linear programming. The implementation on given case studies demonstrates that the new method is capable of providing an optimum pit value. The computing effort required by the algorithm is still the main constraint in solving a large scale problem. The technique provides open pit mine planners with an alternative tool in using a commercial linear programming software which is capable of solving a general transportation problem. The selected software must be able to handle a large scale problem, and it needs an additional effort td formulate the problem and transform a result into the ultimate pit limit solution.

Automated monitoring of steep embankments allows the early detection of instability and can be used to avoid or mitigate possible slope failures. A system that uses multiple and different types of sensors has been created and successfully tested at the Highland Valley Copper mine in British Columbia. The system uses robotic total stations (RTSs) as the primary measurement sensor, with surveys repeated at predefined intervals selected to optimize operational efficiency. A methodology has been developed to improve the system’s accuracy and reliability by reducing the effects of systematic errors created by atmospheric refraction and unstable instrument and reference point positions. The inclusion of GPS sensors to monitor the RTS positions creates additional operational flexibility and maintains system integrity when insufficient reference stations are available.

INTRODUCTION A physical separation partitions a stream of particles into two streams - one containing a concentration of a desirable constituent; the other containing a defficiency - on the basis of a difference in physical properties. Separating ores into concentrates of increased grade and gangue minerals has been practiced for thousands of years. Physical properties of materials which have been used to achieve separations include size, relative density, shape, magnetism, surface charge, color, characteristic emission, resilience and strength. The study of physical separations has also been termed attribute tracking. The term attribute is used to describe the content of the material of interest, or, sometimes, properties not used as a basis of the separation. 11.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some of the selection and design considerations for leach pads and liners. Leach pads and liners are generally chosen to provide the required or desired levels of low permeability and foundation conditions at minimum cost. The selection and design of a particular liner depends upon its anticipated use and performance, and what materials may be available. A leach pad is the firm base for a heap. When geomembrane liners are used, the pad is the firm, compacted foundation upon which the liner is placed. In the case of a clay liner, the clay liner is usually also the pad. It is important to consider the design of a pad or liner in terms of a system. The "leach pad system" consists of the prepared foundation, bedding layer (if used), liner (s), seepage collection or detection layer (if used), and cover layer. Foundation preparation is necessary to ensure a stable base for the rest of the leach pad system. A bedding layer is used to protect a liner from being punctured by large angular fragments in the foundation material. A seepage collection or detection layer, consisting of well-drained material and (sometimes) pipes draining to a collection sump, is included when a double liner is used. A cover layer on top of the liner can serve the following purposes (van Zyl and Strachan, 1986): • Preventing of ultraviolet light exposure to sensitive geomembranes; • Limiting evaporation from compacted clay liners and thereby eliminating cracking of such liners; • More efficient collecting of leachate; and • Protecting the liner from damage during heap construction. Economic evaluations of alternative liners for a project must include the overall system. For example, a geomembrane liner may require different foundation preparation and cover material selection and placement than a clay liner. Liners can be made of compacted clay onsite, amended soil, or geomembranes. The paper will begin with the physical parameters of design in a wire saw. These will include such things as the type of wire used, abrasives, horsepower of operation, and drive components. It will then go into the many uses of wire sawing in the quarrying and finishing of granite. This will include a step by step program of the removal of a block unit of granite from the quarry site through the finished slabbing and jointing in the plant. After this, there will be a small insertion of possibilities of wire sawing techniques in underground excavation work. This would be speculative only. I will use the example of powerhouse type of excavation work given to me by Dr. John Reed, and try to explain how I would attack this type of work using wire saws. Several slides of both design criteria and actual installations were shown.

In response to a request from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the US Bureau of Mines completed a respirable dust survey of 18 US coal preparation plants. Of these, three were essentially free of dust problems. Respirable dust exposure to workers in the remaining plants depended on the time spent in the dusty areas. In five of the plants surveyed, Bureau tests showed that in some areas worker exposures could exceed Federal dust limits in less than two hours. Cooperative studies were arranged with coal preparation plants using three different dust control techniques. These included a standard baghouse-type dust collector, two types of scrubbers, and an electrostatic precipitator. Results of these evaluations are presented. Various types of ventilation systems used during summer and winter conditions were also evaluated. Results showed that appropriate ventilation can provide a highly cost-effective method for controlling coal preparation plant dust.

Much of what is reported was published elsewhere over a year ago (i.e., in their reference: Chi, G., Fuerstenau, M.C., Brandt, R.C. and Ghosh, A., 1996, "Improved comminution efficiency through controlled blasting during mining," International Journal of Min¬eral Processing, Vol. 47, p. 93). There is nothing unusual or significant about a 10% or more difference in grindability between two materials of apparently similar origin and other attributes (such as chemical assays, hardness and specific gravity). Consider also that: • the materials came from different locations in the pit; • only two sets of four blastholes were considered per blast: • spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered; • only two pairs of data were collected; • the impact of sampling error and bias, • both of which could be significant in this case; and • normal experimental error in parameter measurement and calculation. It is clearly inappropriate to draw any conclusions with regard to cause-and-effect relationships without first presenting a thorough error analysis. A substantial number of randomly selected test and control areas might provide meaningful statistical evidence of the claimed effect of the variables being studied. Even that appears doubtful, however, because Figures 3 and 4 show about as much variation in crushing energy for the two "regular" conditions vs. regular and altered conditions. On a separate, but also important issue, broad experience with autogenous/semiautogenous milling has shown that smaller or weaker feed material results in reduced tonnage. ? Reply Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the comments of Messrs. Mclvor ant Fink. The points raised are addressed in the order of presentation. As the commenters noted, there are parallels between this article and a previous manuscript. The reason for these complementary articles is that the audiences for the two publications are different, although there is obviously some overlap. We believe that the different audiences each profit from the technical aspects of the two manuscripts. We are not in agreement that a grindability difference of 10% is insignificant. The laboratory work is corroborated by data obtained at plant scale, which confirms that an increase in throughput of the same magnitude (between 5% and 10%) is achieved when the blasting pattern is modified, i.e., reduced from 9 to 8 m (29.5 to 26.2 ft). This increase in throughput translates into substantial power savings for ore grinding. No differences in appearance in the rock were noted between the two adjacent areas. Rock in both areas belonged to the same rock mass/block, which was quite homogeneous and without geological features in between that could create drastic differences in comminution characteristics. Given the resources, we would have sampled from all of the holes. Additional data would certainly have been desirable, as would have been additional funding to expand the study. Their comment, "spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered," is not clear. Figure 1 does not show the initiation sequence. Without the initiation sequence, we do not understand how the commenters concluded that spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was altered. This paper describes a graphics station and graphics software designed specifically for use within the minerals industry. Through the graphics station, a user is able to recall maps for modification, display them on a color CRT, send the work to a plotter, and restore the work when finished. The engineer may use the system for the storing of data, per- forming engineering calculations, doing word processing, and performing general file maintenance. In addition, the system may be used to communicate with a mainframe computer for such purposes as: transmission of large data files, graphic 3-dimensional rotation of a mineral deposit or mine design, contouring of spacial data, and other data processing work.

The beneficiation of boron minerals flotation with well defined systems has been only slightly, investigated in the literature. The difficulty arises from fact that boron minerals cover a spectrum of solubilities. Colemanite (a calcium-containing, relatively insoluble, boron mineral) and borax (a highly soluble boron mine, have been used to exemplify the flotation of boron minerals. Using sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS) and dodecylamine hydrochloride (DAH), the floatability responses of these boron minerals are considerably different. This has been ascribed to variations in the solubilities of boron minerals and the presence of cations in the lattice structure. Papua New Guinea (PNG) stretches from the equator to Latitude 12° South and from Indonesia's Irian Jaya Province in the west to the Solomon Islands in the east (Figure 1). The population totals 3.5 million people who are mostly concentrated in highland valleys on the main island and around the coast. This paper outlines the history of mining, describes the natural, cultural and regulatory setting of mineral discoveries and highlights, by example, some of the more idiosyncratic environ-mental aspects of mining developments in PNG. It concludes with remarks on the progress made in the fifteen years since environmental matters entered the agenda for the establishment of a new mine in PNG.

Rainbow colors of roofing granules, adorning the roofs of buildings from single family units to largest office buildings, have their origin in the roofing shingles as burlap soaked with tar appearing as early as the 1700s. Dusting of talc and mica on the coated surfaces, to keep roofing from sticking to itself in storage, represents an early improvement to the original construction product. Sometimes, colored, natural mineral dusts were added as color pigments within the dusting material, for initial color. Prolonged exposure to sun caused the asphalt to become brittle, and it eventually cracked and leaked. Search for solutions to cracking and subsequent leaking problems eventually led to the use of crushed mineral granules on asphalt coated shingles. This provided the impetus for further growth in the asphalt roofing industry. Application of a layer of crushed mineral on the asphalt coating minimized the coating deterioration from exposure to ultraviolet light, thus significantly improving the shingle life. In the 1900s, screened waste from slate quarries was the most commonly used granule in asphalt roofing products. Records indicate the use of coarse slate screenings for asphalt roofing as early as 1906. As the asphalt roofing industry further developed, other naturally colored minerals, such as silica sand, quartz, mica, feldspar, talc, slag, granite, rhyolite, and oyster shells were used on roofing surfaces. Later on, a number of manufactured granular materials, such as crushed brick and tile, fire clay, and white porcelain were used. The first artificially colored roofing granule was produced in 1914 by running molten slag into a solution of alkaline metal silicate, which was absorbed by the porous slag. Various colors were obtained by adding pigments to the silicate coating and by subsequently heat treating the granules. In 1922, another technique was developed in which green slate granules were saturated with copper sulfate solution and heated to 760°C to form copper oxide. Since then, many other granule coloring processes have been patented, one of the most significant being the sodium silicate coatings introduced around 1975. Granules as used in construction (specifically roofing materials) are defined as natural or synthetic-mineral grains smaller than gravel and larger than sand in particle size. They are used primarily for protective and decorative purposes on the weather- exposed surface of asphalt composition roofing. Development of artificial coloring techniques has made it possible for the roofing industry to provide asphalt roofing shingles in a wide variety of colors complementing the color and style of buildings. Roofing granules, as we see today, are the products of long technological evolution.

The problem of long-term production scheduling in an underground coal mine is approached through the concepts of sequencing theory. Based on a typical layout of mining sections, the principles for the approach are: 1. The definition of mining sections as jobs, and mining methods as machines. 2. The reduction of the overall mining activity to the general problem of nonpreemptive scheduling of precedence related jobs on parallel machines. 3. The simplification of the layout to a general type directed network with the nodes representing jobs and the arcs representing precedence relations. 4. The determination of a feasible and near-optimal job schedule given the objective of maximizing the total net present value of the jobs. A general scheduling heuristic is being developed for implementation on an IBM personal computer (PC) as part of an interactive computer system for long-term production planning.

Membrane technology has been available for about 30 years, but has been used very sparingly within the general mining industry. However, recent developments in polymer chemistry, spiral wound element construction, pretreatment equipment and element cleaning techniques have improved the reliability and robustness of membrane based systems. These improvements have expanded the potential to use this "new" technology to enhance critical recoveries of gold and silver in heap leaching operations or in the extraction circuit. Another opportunity for the mining industry will be to use membrane technology in new processes like controlling organic acids or ammonium thiosul­fate to enhance gold and silver extraction during leaching opera­tions. Finally, the most common use for membrane technology is for the control of mining water balance and acid mine drainage issues. Polymeric membranes, specifically thin-film composites, have been developed that will purify, fractionate or concentrate gold or silver. Recent applications have been developed for spi­ral wound modules that operate across the pH spectrum from 0 to 14. Systems using membranes have been constructed that operated on feed streams from 200° C to 3000 centipoise. Most recently, membrane based systems have been pilot tested suc­cessfully to purify solvents, like LIX. Opportunities exist to apply membrane technology to concen­trate gold and silver cyanide solutions with thin-film composite Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes at elevated pH values above 10. Incorporating membrane technology could allow one to increase production without incurring additional expansion of the gold extraction side of the process. Furthermore, free cyanide is not rejected by the Reverse Osmosis membranes, but other inorganic salts are rejected 98+%, thereby, allowing an essentially ion free, except for the free cyanide, to be recirculat­ed back to the heap leach operation for enhanced extraction.

Blasts designed for in situ copper leaching must produce adequate fragmentation and permeability for successful leaching. Copper recovery depends to a large extent on the particle size distribution created by the blast, the permeability in the blast- fractured zone, and the ability to maintain solution flow with a minimum amount of channeling. This paper presents the results of Bureau of Mines experiments where core drilling was used before and after blasting to establish the degree of fragmentation. Data are presented from tests at the Sierrita mine of Duval Corp., and also from tests at the Emerald Isle mine of El Paso Mining and Milling Co. Copper recovery is predicted from fragment size distribution data using a computer model. Data from several blasts are used to show how predicted copper recovery is related to powder factor.

The standard test methods used to determine the pyrite content of coal and mineral wastes, and their propensity to release acidic drainage, are critically reviewed. In addition to analysis of total sulfur by combustion, test methods using selective oxidation of pyrite by HNO3 and H2O2 are available. The oxidation kinetics of pyrite vary appreciably from sample to sample, and it is difficult to ascertain whether complete dissolution has occurred in heterogeneous materials. The reliability, reproducibility and suitability of different standard test methods were studied, using well characterized ore and coal pyrite samples. The kinetics of pyrite dissolution were also investigated. The results are discussed in terms of the fundamental chemical and physical characteristics of each sample, and the implications for waste characterization are considered.

The time-worn adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" was never more applicable than when used in reference to coal mine safety. Many individuals have dedicated many hours to developing effective accident prevention programs, and much has been accomplished. Each production escalation, however, creates new hazards and safety problems which need special study and research. It is a never ending cyle. To study the progress of coal-mine safety is to raise memories of many individuals who have been dedicated to removing the hazards that have developed with increased productivity and deeper penetration into the earth for coal. Some vivid examples of this dedication are the works of the men who pioneered the use of the safety lamp and the use of rock dust in mining.
