Screens serve several important functions in CIL and CIP processes for gold extraction. One important screen application known as interstage screening allows slurry to be continuously transfered through a series of CIL or CIP tanks while retaining activated carbon in the tank. In some cases, this has been accomplished by using airlifts to carry slurry containing activated carbon to an external screen which separates carbon as oversize and returns it to the tank by gravity. The undersize slurry advances to the subsequent tank. More recently this has been accomplished using launder screens and Kambalda type screens. These are essentially static screens that rely on air blasts or mechanical sweepers to clear carbon away from the screen surfaces.

This paper presents a basic, and yet practical, three-dimensional finite element model that was developed by the authors for stress/stability analysis of mine structures. While the code is linear elastic at this stage, it has some practical features that make it an attractive tool for mine design. Such features include: simulation of mine backfill support, mining induced strain energy calculation, powerful out-of-core frontal solver and failure analysis by Mohr-Coulomb or Hoek-Brown failure criteria. Model development criteria are discussed, and the potential application of the model to mining is demonstrated by design examples.

The use and application of shotcrete for ground support in the Asia Pacific Region is as diverse as the countries that make up this region. This paper will attempt to describe the many methods used on selected projects within that region. The project description(s) will include project logistics, equipment, mix design, products and application methods utilized along with specifications and performance results (where available). The author will attempt to reach a conclusive opinion on the success, or nonsuccess, of the various shotcrete methods employed and the development of shotcrete within the Asia Pacific Region.

The characteristics of mine airstreams, such as their magnitude in the time and frequency domain and their spatial distribution, as defined by isovels, must be considered when making a measurement. The possibility for erroneous measurements is greatly increased when fixed- point sensors for mine monitoring systems are used. However, an a priori understanding of the airstream characteristics can be used to reduce the possibility of erroneous readings. This paper describes the problem, presents data to illustrate the nature of the problem, and provides recommendations for alleviating the problem.

Corrosion and abrasion have been present in hydrometallurgical processes for many years. Ceramic lining materials have been used in several applications to protect process vessels from the corrosive and abrasive effects of a wide range of ore slurry processes. This paper reviews the history of ceramic lining systems utilized in hydrometallurgical vessels, the commercial benefits associated with their use, and additional areas of opportunity for the Mining Industry.

The expansion of a fluidized bed of carbon depends on fluid velocity, fluid temperature (viscosity) and particle size of the carbon. This paper presents a mathematical model which can be used to calculate the necessary fluid velocity. It will allow the design of sufficient freeboard in the column to accommodate expected operating conditions. Although this paper is keyed towards the use of activated carbon in precious metals adsorbtion from water solutions, the model is.valid with any fluid. Additionally, the method of calculating the required suspension velocity in CIL or CIP pulps is described.

Copper ore from the Rakha Copper Concentrator (India) was successfully floated using LIX-65 NS as the collector. The beneficial role of this reagent was clearly demonstrated in hatch-flotation tests. From a feed containing around 1% Cu, it was possible in a single-stage flotation to obtain a 23.7% Cu concentrate with a recovery of more than 90%. The plant now uses rougher, scavenger and a two-stage cleaning process. The tests demonstrated that LIX-65 NS is superior to conventional xanthate for the recovery of copper from the Rakha ore.

In the Basin and Range Province of Nevada, geophysics is used to assist exploration for bulk minable gold deposits, particularly over pediments. It is employed for mapping thickness of alluvium and Tertiary valley fill, for mapping covered structures, and for identifying alteration zones. In addition to potential field and seismic methods, three different electrical and electromagnetic methods are frequently used, resistivity-induced polarization, controlled source audiomagnetotellurics, and time domain EM. A review and comparison of the principles of these methods, illustrated by case histories, is the topic of this paper.

The Hydro-Jex technology has been used by Newmont Mining Corp. on the gold heap leach pads on the Carlin Trend - Nevada for three years to recover the inventory gold and change the chemistry in the pads. This research and development patented process is complete with the resultant data presented. Information on drill sampling, geophysical surveying, followed by leach pad stimulation with impacts on solution chemistry and gold recovery are discussed. Can this technology be used to rinse and close heap leach pads faster with reduced pump energy costs and improved recovery?

This section deals with the oxides of heavy metals, namely, columbium and tantalum, rare earths, chrome, manganese, titanium, tin, and tungsten. Table I contains the production figures for each of these commodities in the US and in the world in 1977. Specifications for concentrates are also summarized as well as prices for concentrates in 1977. In each chapter an attempt has been made to describe the more common commercial mineral involved with the commodity and the processes used to recover and concentrate the minerals, as well as geographical areas where these processes are utilized.

The People's Republic of China has abundant coal resources with proven reserves amounting to 582 Gt (641 billion st). Recognizing coal as a major energy source on which to build the country's industrial and economic base, there has been a rapid increase in production since the founding of the People's Republic. In 1949, only 29.4 Mt (32.4 million st) of coal was mined. Production has increased to 576.5 Mt (635.5 million st), exclusive of Taiwan, at present, making China the third largest coal producing country in the world. Plans call for a 4-5% increase in annual production for the next 20 years. Coal constitutes 70% of the primary energy consumption in China. The remaining 30% is divided between petroleum and natural gas with 26% and hydropower with 4%. Coal use and consumption is divided as follows. General industrial use comprised 48.9%, power generation uses 20.1%, and coking accounts for 10.5% (6.3% for metallurgy and 4.2% for chemical industry). Domestic use such as home heating and cooking makes up 17.8% and coal-fired steam engines for railways uses 4.7%. Coal Districts Coal underlies about 1/18 of China's land area. It occurs in 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. In addition, the western interior region, which has not been explored, may contain sizable reserves. Based on geology, geography, and administration, the coal fields can be grouped into five districts as shown in Fig. 1. The north China district, the heart of the industrial base for the country, has the most extensive and largest deposits of the five districts. This amounts to almost 40% of the country's total reserves. The largest coal basin with proven reserves of 181.4 Gt (200 billion st) and the most exploitable seams is located some 300 km (186 miles) southwest of Beijing (Peking) in Shanxi Province. Centered around Taiyuan, the compound field extends from Datong in the north to Xian in the south. Its western extension is not known fully. The Northwest and Northeast districts contain the second and third largest deposits. The biggest coal field in South China is located in the Sichuan and Guizhou Provinces near Chongqing. At present, it is not known if sizable coal measures exist in the Tibetan district. Coal Types China's coal varies widely both in age and rank. Some basic terms used in cost management and accounting include: - Cost. A sacrifice made to acquire goods or services, measured by the price paid. Technically, the sacrifice is called a cost until the benefits from the goods or services have expired, at which time the sacrifice is called an expense. In this text, the terms "cost" and "expense" are used interchangeably. - Revenue. An increase in the value of the firm resulting from the sales of goods and services. - Income. The excess of revenues over costs for a specified period. The term is often used with modifiers to indicate specific quantities on an income statement (e.g., pretax income; net income). - Activity. A measure of production work. Traditionally, physical production volume (tons of ore or units of product) has been used as the measure of activity. Other measures include direct labor hours, equipment operating hours, and quantity of materials or supplies consumed. - Responsibility center. A segment of an organization that is responsible for a specified set of activities. In mining, individual operating divisions can be treated as responsibility centers, known as profit or cost centers. Departments within a division are generally treated as cost centers. - Cost center. A portion of an organization having responsibility for achieving specified levels of cost. - Profit center. A portion of an organization having responsibility for achieving specified levels of profit (revenues and costs).

Steel mesh has been used successfully for many years to control friable roof conditions and prevent loose roof and rib material from caving into the roadway. Despite its extensive use, the installation of steel mesh is difficult to automate and many other products have been evaluated as an alternative for skin control. Ideally, the properties of these new products should be similar or better than those of the steel mesh. In particular, development of a strong and resistant shell that minimizes movement along the fractured rock and coal surfaces between the bolt anchors is recommended. A strong surface adhesion and the strength of a reinforced polymer skin can provide the necessary toughening mechanism required to enhance roadway surface support by forming a reinforced polymer/rock surface layer. Most of the Thin Spray-on Liners (TSL) evaluated in the mines are weak with slow curing times, and the plastic mesh currently used to support the coal ribs is relatively weak. Therefore, neither material can seriously compete with steel mesh. Currently, a new polymer product that cures in seconds and forms an instantaneous strata binder that surpasses the properties of steel mesh is under development at the University of Wollongong.

Two automated fire detection system configurations have been used successfully in underground mines: the pneumatic "tube bundle" approach and the electronic telemetry approach. The electronic telemetry approach is more widely used, owing to its greater speed, flexibility, and capacity to both monitor other underground conditions, and remotely control underground equipment. However, depending on specific mine conditions and layouts, pneumatic detection, or a combined pneumatic/telemetered system may offer significant advantages over the telemetered approach alone. This paper describes research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to design and in- mine test a rapid response pneumatic fire detection system tailored to the unique requirements of multilevel metal mines. The relative merits of pneumatic detection are discussed in the context of typical multilevel mine layouts and environments. A Bureau developed proto- type system is described with emphasis on design features which counter commonly perceived and/or experienced pneumatic detection system operating problems. Finally, the results of a 3-yr in-mine performance evaluation of the prototype hardware are discussed. Included are descriptions of system layout and coverage, response time, tube leakage, sample dilution, elimination of accumulated water from sample lines, and system maintenance and reliability.

INTRODUCTION Several recent technological improvements - largely by the convey-or industry - have increased the importance of inclined shaft construction for developing mines where ore deposits are relatively shallow. With these newer systems, long conveyor haulages are economically feasible, allowing mine owners to justify the expense of the inclined shaft or slope. What this actually means is that they can now take advantage of the versatility this construction offers. For example, haulage capacity can be changed by conveyor additions or replacements; equipment can be trammed to and from the surface quickly without costly breakdown and re-assembly; and a walkway is available for workers in the event of an emergency. Now, another innovation may accelerate this type of construction, the use of tunnel boring machines or "Mechanical Moles" to dig the slopes. While conventional. drill and blast methods have been used previously to build inclined shafts, the tunnel boring machine technique offers greater production rates, higher safety and a better, much cleaner bore. McGuire Shaft & Tunnel Corporation of Ft. Smith, Arkansas recently started such a slope project - the first ever bid by a contractor based on the use of a "Mechanical Mole".

This paper consists of a review of the development and application of spherical charge blasting at Inco Metals Company. Topics will include the Livingston Strain Equation, the field data required for its use in full scale operation, the type of ground in which mining has been carried out, explosives in use and their characteristics and finally, an overview of actual production applications. These applications include Primary Stope Mining, Secondary Mining Against Fill, Mining a Faulted Ore Zone and Drop Raise Blasting. INTRODUCTION Crater blasting in itself has been in use for over twenty years, but only recently has the technique been combined with a spherical size charge to form the Vertical Retreat Mining Method. This article endeavours to put the Livingston Strain Equation in a practical light, to describe several actual hard rock applications, and the results achieved in each case. THE LIVINGSTON STRAIN ENERGY EQUATION C.W. Livingston put forward the following equation as a standard means of determining the optimum burden required for full crater production blasting. The constant "E" is included in an attempt to recognize secondary breakage caused by strain waves.

The Ohio valley division of consolidation coal company has incorporated two new aspects within its coal mining concern. A new communication system, thru the cooperation of the c. & p. Telephone company, has been established in each of our mines with its central control in the general office building. In conjunction with this system, a Texas instruments 960 a computer has been incorporated into the system. The purpose for our computer is to provide modernization and improvement to our safety, production and maintenance programs. Thru proper use, the computer will help eliminate inaccuracies and inefficiences that have previously caused inaccurate analysis of problems. Due to federal requirements for more reliable communications in underground mines, Ohio valley division is making a concentrated effort to improve its communication systems. Systems such as the magneto phone and trolley phone have been looked at more critically. It was found that these systems are being used well beyond their limits. With these facts in mind, division personnel started looking for a system that would have these built in advantages: ease of maintenance and installation, increased reliability, low cost, and an inherent ability as a multiple use system.

Several mineral process modeling and simulation packages are currently available for use in evaluating the performance of alternative process flow schemes. A critical link that has been missing from these packages is the ability to quantitatively model the effect of size reduction on the liberation of the valuable and waste minerals in the ore being processed. Although there have been several approaches taken to this problem over the past 25 years, none of them has led to a satisfactory conclusion. A technique was developed for measuring the effective liberation characteristics of magnetic taconite ores, and a program was constructed that makes use of these liberation characteristics in simultaneously simulating both size reduction and mineral liberation as it occurs in tumbling mills. This is an especially important step in the modeling of magnetic taconite processes, where magnetic rejection of low-grade wastes between grinding stages mandates that a predictive capability be available. The current application is specific to magnetic taconite, but it is possible that a similar approach could be used for other types of mineral systems.
