The most famous landmark of the city of Graz (Austria) is the clock tower on the castle hill. An underground chamber was built as a multifunctional structure beneath this landmark. The required structure was designed as cavern. The overburden to the clock tower in the north side of the cavern was only 30 m. To allow access from the city to the chamber and the clock tower, a vertical shaft was built near the cavern. Rock excavation was by drill and blast method. The pilot shaft was made by the raise-boring method. Because the location of the building site was in the center of Graz, special care was taken to minimize deformations and vibrations so as to protect surrounding buildings.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are powerful analytical and data display tools for mining industry management, capable of linking spatial features with tabular data and integrating communications across departmental boundaries. This GIS application concentrates in four technical areas of underground mining: ownership and mineral claims; exploration management; production; and mine safety. GIS provides land and exploration managers with the ability to consolidate and archive claim data and to georeference property maps defined in local coordinates into world coordinate systems. It facilitates optimal siting and querying of service installations and refuge chambers relative to production centers. GIS's proximity analysis identifies areas of potential safety concern and points to and maps the shortest routes to emergency exits, facilitating the prompt evacuation of mine personnel.

NIOSH researchers and an industry partner conducted an investigation to study the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions in mining. The study required a significant commitment of time and resources from the cooperating site, Bridger Coal Company. This paper focuses on some of the challenges faced by the researchers and their cooperator. Challenges included the need to redesign methods of identifying and prioritizing injuries, and the need to train the workforce in ergonomics while still maintaining progress and interest in the process. The authors discuss some practical interventions implemented by Bridger Coal to date, and discuss future research implications brought about by PacifiCorp’s Generation Business Unit, who monitored the project to determine whether an employee-owned ergonomic process could be implemented throughout their operations.

An investigation was initiated by BILLITON Process Research and Gold Fields Limited for the efficient removal of thiocyanate and cyanide from leach solutions. This led to the development of the ASTERTM process, an acronym for Activated Sludge Tailings Effluent Remediation. The biological degradation of thiocyanate and cyanide in effluents provides an alternative treatment to the more traditional processes. This occurs with a large number of micro-organisms which include bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi. Cyanide and thiocyanate are degraded to ammonia and carbon dioxide. Most forms of cyanide-metal complexes are generally removed through a co.mbination of oxidation and sorption into the biofilm/biomass. Since the ASTER™ process has commercial applications, a patent has been lodged for the ASTER™ process. A culture containing thiocyanate degrading organisms has been deposited with the Australian Government Analytical Laboratories (AGAL). The identification of the bacteria is in progress. Tailings arising from a cyanidation process tend to contain cyanide and thiocyanate. The presence of these species prevents the recycling of this water upstream to a bioleach circuit due to its toxicity to the bacterial culture. Increasingly stringent legislation for the land disposal of cyanide containing solutions also necessitates the treatment of the solutions before disposal.

Metallic raw material flows are characterized by a complex global network of producers and consumers, as well as by a multitude of ecological, economic and social impacts across national boundaries and on different scales. This leads to the need to develop methodologies, which allow identifying obstacles that prevent metallic raw material flows to contribute to sustainable development. From a scientific point of view CRC 525 (Martens 2003) has developed an holistic indicator set consisting of approximately 80 different indicators. This set is taking into account the multi-dimensional character of sustainable development. Moreover the indicators reflect different system boundaries according to different actor levels and decision contexts. The full indicator set is important in scientific considerations and suitable for scientific awareness creation. However, to fulfil the function of a decision support approach for political and economic decision-makers some modifications are of central concern. At first a reduction of the full indicator set by selection of core indicators enables decision-makers to deal with complex issues of contrary economic and societal protection targets. Secondly, as thresholds of indicators justify societal call for action, they are discussed against its political or scientific origin. The proposed methodology is exemplified by indicator-based studies of the material flow of aluminium.

INTRODUCTION A compaction grouting program to control ground loss, and to minimize surface settlement, was developed for the West Tunnel of the Phoenix Storm Drain Tunnels. The West Tunnel was 4,200 m long, 7.56 m in excavated diameter, and was excavated with shallow cover through the central Phoenix business district. The tunnel could not have been successfully excavated without the compaction grouting program. HISTORY After heated political debate over a ten year period, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) was granted approval to build the Papago Freeway, an extension of Interstate 10, through central Phoenix. To comply with environmental constraints, a portion of the Freeway was depressed, requiring an excavation 10 meters in depth, thus intersecting surface run-off from the northern section of Phoenix. This required that ADOT and Project Design Consultant, Howard, Needles, Tammen & Bergendoff (HNTB) design a drain system to collect run-off and transport it approximately 4 kilometers to the Salt River through the City of Phoenix. Tunnels were chosen for the main discharge conduits because depth and location of the system made cut and cover construction impractical. A contract for construction of the tunnels was awarded to Shank-Artukovich-Ohbayashi (S-A-O) on May 24, 1984.

Silver Bell is located about 56 km (35 miles) northwest of Tucson, AZ. It is a classic porphyry copper deposit containing enriched disseminated chalcocite ore in altered porphyritic rocks with chalcopyrite in adjacent skarn zones. The discovery of Silver Bell was an evolutionary process that occurred over a 75-year period. Recorded mining activity began about 1865 on Boot Hill east of El Tiro pit (see Fig. 1) where outcrops of altered limestones were found to contain 425 to 482 g (15 to 17 oz) Ag mixed with copper oxides. By 1874, the Young America Copper Co. was mining shallow occurrences of 30% Cu along the north side of the present Oxide pit. The ore was shipped by wagon to Yuma, AZ, and then by boat to San Francisco for smelting. By 1881, the district supported several mining companies, two small smelters, and was being favorably compared to Bisbee in local newspapers. Most of the ore mined in the period 1865-1903 came from pods of massive sulfide or their oxidized products which were distributed in an unpredictable fashion through a large skarn zone in Paleozoic limestone east of El Tiro pit. Ore grades varied from 5 to 10% Cu.

The new regulations for the bituminous coal mining industry, issued by the mining authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany, are aimed at reducing to a feasible minimum any development of the coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) by lowering the admissible dust exposure of mine workers. Additional and improved measures of dust suppression and job assignment control *) are required for the purpose In this connection two basically different demands are placed on dust measurements: As far as dust suppression is concerned, the causes of dust development and the effectiveness of methods applied to reduce dust concentrations have to be identified, whereas with regard to the control of job assignment, the dust exposure of mine workers has to be depermined. Demands placed on dust measurements -- specifically for determining dust exposure -- are liable to become more severe since the threshold limit values were considerably reduced in these last years and since any additional dust suppression measures as well as a purposeful job assignment to certain mine workers are dependent on relevant measuring data. Therefore, research work has been carried out with the objective of measuring and evaluating, in terms of their effect (i. e. their incidence on the development of a CWP), size distribution, concentration, and specific noxiousness of any prevailing dust conditions.

Tool and cutterhead wear is a crucial issue in soft ground tunneling, especially because tool inspection, maintenance, and replacement are done under difficult conditions, and often under pressurized faces or under ?hyperbaric interventions?. Overall, tool inspection and changing is a time consuming and costly step, which needs to be quantified and the related costs accounted for in any construction contract for scheduling and costing of the tunnels at design stage or bid preparation. However, lack of a universally accepted index or measure for soil abrasivity in the geotechnical reports has made it difficult, if not impossible, to define cutter wear for this purpose. Soil abrasion and its impact on cutting tools for tunneling machines under dry or wet conditions have recently been under spot light due to construction claims in several of the recent tunneling projects. The objective of this paper is to examine soil?s physical, mechanical and tribological properties related to the interface of the soil and excavation tools and discuss ways to measure soil abrasivity in a quantitative and repeatable manner. The paper will discuss the efforts that are underway to develop a new soil abrasivity index and the fabrication of a new testing device for this purpose.

Some 146 kt (4.69 billion oz) of gold have been mined throughout history. Of this, 70% has been mined in this century alone, with 17% produced from 1985 through 1996 (Fig. 1 and Table 1). Until the mid-19th century, placers were the chief source of gold. Advancements in mining, metallurgy and geological thinking have resulted in underground mining (first of veins plus stockworks and later of Rand-type deposits) becoming the principal source of gold. With the demise of the South African deposits and the move towards lower grade ores, the primary source of gold will be from disseminated deposits exploited through large, open-pit mines. For the past 200 years, there has been a fairly constant ratio of about 31 g (1 oz) of gold to each person alive. If this ratio is to be maintained, annual gold production will have to rise from about 2.3 kt/a (73.9 million oz/year) to more than 3.1 kt/a (99.7 million oz/year) by the year 2000. To effect this increase, an unforeseen breakthrough in exploration or metallurgy is needed. Barring this, there will be pressure for an increase in the price of gold. This article traces the historical production of gold from 4000 B.C. - the earliest record of gold mining - to today and relates this 6,000-year record to advances in geological thinking, mining engineering and extractive metallurgy. It also proposes that man's thirst for gold, reflected in the price he will pay for gold, and his ability to find, mine and refine gold have combined to effect an equilibrium based loosely on the historical ratio of 31 g (1 oz) of cumulative gold production per each man or woman alive.

Gold in many ores occurs in sulphides, which, if the gold is finely disseminated, renders the ore refractory and therefore not amenable to the simple process of milling and cyanidation. Traditional methods of treatment of these refractory ores is to produce a sulphidic flotation concentrate which is roasted to form a porous calcine from which the gold is recovered by cyanidation. The roasting process imposes a constraint of a minimum sulphur grade of the concentrate on the flotation plant, which may lead to a lower gold recovery being achieved in the flotation section. Thermal decomposition of the concentrate by roasting means that the sulphur contained therein has to be treated and disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner; and, if arsenopyrite is present in the concentrate the environ- mental aspects will be worsened. It has long been recognized that finer milling of gold-bearing materials improves the liberation of gold, especially when the gold particles are very fine. After extensive laboratory and pilot plant investigations (Liddell, Patents), a suitable mill has been developed for the mining industry by Metprotech, which is capable of producing very fine grinds (down to 90 percent passing one m if necessary). In the course of the investigations it has been found that a large number of gold-bearing materials are amenable to fine milling. A specific advantage that fine milling of sulphidic materials has over oxidative processes such as roasting and bacterial leaching is that the sulphides are not decomposed and there is therefore not a sulphur disposal problem. Furthermore, the milled sulphides can become a future sulphur feed source, and can be reclaimed if necessary. This article examines some important trends in East-West trade in non-fuel mineral products, in particular the recent decline in Eastern bloc exports of such products. It relates this decline to an improvement in Soviet terms of trade; a deterioration of geological and locational conditions in Soviet mineral production; an increased integration of the CMEA-countries based on a regional pooling of resources; and a surge in demand for mineral commodities in Eastern countries coupled with a slowdown in Western economic growth. Finally, it evaluates to what extent these determinants may evolve in a different direction during the eighties and thus foster East-West mineral trade. Eastern1 bloc trade in mineral products is a subject of perennial interest in the West. When exports increase, there is much talk of the dangers of dependence on the East for critical fuels and materials. When imports increase, talk turns to the danger of Soviet dependence on Western supplies. A common fear is that the USSR may not only seek to meet its own resource needs but also deny the access of Western countries to these resources. This paper, like three other recent additions to the lite5ature on Soviet foreign trade of commodities2, tries to put matters in clearer and cooler perspective. The first section evaluates the structure of East-West mineral trade and tries to identify some important trends of recent years. The second section relies on supply and demand factors, as well on the Comecon connection (the intra-Council for Mutual Economic Assistance mineral cooperation) to explain why there has been a reversal in the mineral trade trend since the end of the seventies. The last section evaluates the factors which could stimulate East-West mineral trade in the future.

INTRODUCTION The tailings, or solid waste, remaining after uranium has been extracted from an ore and the liquid wastes associated with it contain both radioactive and other substances which, if released to the environment, may have a detrimental impact on man and his environment. Although the radioactivity of the waste is of natural origin, the mining and milling process results in bringing the radioactive ore to the surface, changing its chemical and physical form, increasing its mobility and, therefore, enhancing the potential radiological exposure to man. Exposure to radionuclides released from a tailings impoundment, while small as applied to any one generation, can be made large by counting far into the future, large enough to be the dominant source of exposure from the nuclear fuel cycle, Cunningham (1978). Increasingly it is being found that where the prime concern was initially the radionuclide releases, the release of other pollutants and contaminants may be of equal or greater concern. While there is a definite benefit, at least to present generations, resulting from the recovery of uranium, current and long-term concerns require that consequential present and future releases be kept as low as is reasonably achievable. Design practice, to minimize this release, is currently passing through a technical revolution; precipitated by public and institutional concerns. New techniques and methods are, therefore, being actively sought and continuously implemented. Because of the complexity of the pollutant release mechanisms and the sitespecific nature of each impoundment site and tailings product, a wide variety of site selection and design options have been implemented or considered. It is often possible to design a number of satisfactory tailings disposal schemes which differ widely in nature and cost. INTRODUCTION This submission was made to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into uranium mining in British Columbia. It discusses the stability of waste rock piles that might be developed in conjunction with uranium mining and the control of leachates that might be generated within these waste rock piles over the short and the long term. Short term refers to the interval during which a waste rock pile undergoes either continuous, or alternatively intermittent development, and in general can be considered to extend over the operating life of the mine. Long term refers to the postmining period, i.e. after the ore-body has been exhausted, and mining operations have ceased. Two major classes of waste material are generated in the course of mining and milling operations. Tails, which are the solid waste materials produced by the milling operations commonly exit the mill in slurry form and are stored in tailing retention ponds. Management and control of these slurried wastes are the subject of other papers to the Commission and this conference. In the course of the mining operations, it may be necessary to remove rock materials that are below cut-off grade. That is, ore concentrations within some of the mined rock may be lower than the concentrations which on the basis of economic considerations justifies milling the material. Rock which is removed in the course of the mining operations, but which is below cut-off grade is referred to as waste rock. This waste rock is commonly consigned to a specific area for disposal where it is placed in a mound or pile, i.e. a waste rock pile. Ore concentrations within the waste rock may vary from zero to just below cut-off grade. Since an increase in the market value of uranium could at some time in future result in reduction of the cut-off grade, it follows that waste rock containing ore concentrations slightly below today's cut-off grade could become ore grade rock at some time in future. For this reason, the mine operators may deem it advisable to separate waste rock according to grade, and to consign the waste rock to two or more individual waste rock piles. For purposes of clarity and simplicity, this submission treats the stability of waste rock piles and leachate control in a manner which assumes that these potential problems are isolated and separate from other aspects of the mining and milling operations. For many site specific cases, the problem of potential leachate control might be integrated with the tailings management aspect of the project, thereby realizing economic benefits while at the same time reducing the potential for adverse environmental impact.

We live on the planet and depend on the available resources to survive. The extracted materials form the base to support modern life. However, we must be aware of the fact that mineral resources are limited on the Earth and may not last forever. Every time we extract one ton of materials, there is one ton less. They are not able to regenerate or regrow. One can ask a simple question: How long will they last? Or, is there anything left for our great grandchildren and many generations to come? The answer is not simple. Some minerals have become scarce or about to deplete. Some minerals may last longer. The reserve of a type of minerals depends on what we have discovered and the minable amount depends on accessibility and technology we have. Even if there are minerals in the deep ground, we may be limited by our technological capability. At the same time, we also need to understand the action of mineral extraction from the ground and the consequences of that action. Mineral extraction is a very hard work. We must break the ground to extract the ore, either through surface mining or underground mining. This action means disturbance of the land where we live. The disturbance is much more visible in surface mining than underground mining. The disturbed land, if not properly reclaimed after mining, is not going to be reusable. The very purpose of extracting minerals from the ground is to support our life but the action has a negative impact on our life. How can we reduce and limit disturbance of land from the action of minerals extraction? How can we make the disturbed land reusable? These issues must be properly addressed and a balance achieved."

A major problem facing the Nigerian Mineral Industry today is flooding in its underground mines. Flooding has reduced productivity to a very low level which results in huge economic losses. Consequently, this paper presents a computer based model that pre¬dicts the quantity of water accumulating from diverse sources in an underground coal mine with a view to suggesting a permanent solution to the problem. Specifically, the paper describes the model building technique and the output achieved from its application to a real mine case study.

The longterm aim of this research project is to find fast ways of simulating the recoverable reserves of a deposit for input into financial Monte Carlo simulations without having to conditionally simulate the whole orebody many times. The first step in this re- search is to visualize and quantify the ore tonnage T and the metal quantity Q above an arbitrary cutoff z. This paper presents detailed results for one specific distribution, the lognormal. These lead to a suggestion of a fast way of simulating QTz curves.

The Cyanide Regeneration Process (CRP) was developed by Golconda Engineering and Mining Services and installed at Golconda's Beaconsfield Gold Tailings Retreatment Project situated in Tasmania, Australia. The Tailings Project is a 1000 ton per day carbon-in-pulp treatment plant, feed for which consists of tailings material which is dredged from the Tamar River. The pulp is screened to remove debris, then cycloned to form two products. Underflow pulp is stored in a 350 ton bin and cyclone overflow passes to a thickener. The coarse pulp material is fed to the grinding circuit then rejoins the thickened slimes in the cyanide leach circuit. Gold is extracted by carbon-in-pulp techniques. The plant is sited in rolling, hilly country approximately 200 meters from the Tamar River. The residue disposal area is quite small consisting of four dams, totalling 42 acres. The regional climate is cool and wet with little evaporation; therefore, we anticipated a net increase in contained liquor, and subsequent storage problems. Our plan was to remove cyanide from the liquor prior to returning the detoxified solution to the river system. Such treatment was not required until midway through the second year of the project. Initial testwork on sample material indicated that destruction of cyanide by chlorine was the simple solution. Subsequent follow-up on actual plant liquor indicated a huge chlorine requirement due, we believe, to the substantial degradation of vegetable matter plus organic content from the marine environment. The cost of cyanide destruction could not be justified.

A number of important international events took place in 2001 in the development and evolution of mineral valuation standards internationally. In Canada, the CIMVal Committee released a draft discussion paper for public and industry comment on principles to guide the development of the planned Canadian mineral-property valuation standard. The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) received comments on its Extractive Industries Issues Paper. IASB will decide whether the financial statements of public mining and petroleum companies will be allowed to provide the value of mineral and petroleum assets on a current value basis instead of an historic cost basis. The author led the Extractive Industries Task Force of the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC) in developing its submission to IASB. IVSC intends to develop an extractive-industries valuation section for its International Valuation Standards, which could support the planned IASB standard. In Australia, AusIMM has carried out an in-depth review of its highly regarded VALMIN Code. The AusIMM's MICA subdivision organized the VALMIN `01 Conference in Sydney, Australia, with a range of international and current issues papers published in the VALMIN '01 book. Considerable support for the IVSC initiative was evident at this conference. The results of the review of the extractive industries submissions to the IASB were expected to be released in early 2002. The CMMI Congress in Cairns, Australia in May 2002 is likely to prove to be an important forum for continued discussion of the development and implementation of international standards and qualifications for mineral valuation. The outcomes and implications of these events are discussed.
