Modern mine ventilation systems have grown rapidly in recent years both in terms of complexity and value for human health and safety. Although computer models are now available to help the design and operation of mine ventilation systems, considerable differences often exist between the computer-based predictions and practical results. Research conducted to compare computer results with practical measurements made in ventilation circuits simulated in a physical model seems to confirm such differences. It is concluded that although a mine ventilation computer model is a very powerful tool, it can be utilized to its full potential only if reliable input data are provided.

Experimental investigations of single particle and interparticle breakage show that the microprocess in mills demands an energy input between 1 J/g and 10 J/g, if particles below 100 pm have to be comminuted. A system analysis of grinding media and roller mills is given in respect to the energy supply to the microprocess and the influence of the back stream caused by the compression of the material inside the active volume. The back stream diminishes the probability for capturing the particles in very fine grinding processes. Some possibilities are discussed how to solve this problem.

Dewatering wells producing iron-rich water experience rapid declines in yield and drawdown due to the formation of ferric (Fe3+) hydroxide deposits in well screens, pump intakes and riser pipes. Precipitation is caused by a combination of dewatering-promoted iron oxidation and iron oxidizing bacteria. Physical and chemical well rehabilitation techniques, as well as alternative well-construction and well development techniques, were evaluated in this study. The addition of acid downhole feed systems to dewatering wells that are prone to iron encrustation can, in many cases, prolong their operational lives up to 500% that of unacidified wells.

Lead alloys function effectively as oxygen-evolving anodes in copper SX-EW operations, and they are highly resistant to corrosion. However, the presence of an organic (from solvent extraction circuits) in the electrolyte seems to enhance solution line attack. Laboratory tests showed that lead is soluble in D2EHPA, Acorga and LIX 984 to a limited, yet measurable, degree. Lead alloys and various lead phases formed on the anode were tested to evaluate their effect on the corrosion process in organic media. Possible causes for anode corrosion and mechanisms responsible for their initiation are discussed.

Due to grade, overburden depth and stability and the presence of groundwater it was considered impractical to recover gold contained in unconsolidated palaeochannel sediments by conventional mining, dredging or borehole mining techniques. A series of field experiments was conducted to determine the feasibility of recovery of gold by in situ leaching from sediments located at a depth of about 80 metres. The test wellfield site and plant are described together with field test procedures, results and wellfield rehabilitation procedures. Choice of sodium cyanide as leachant and laboratory testing are discussed in relation to groundwater and sediment chemistry and problems encountered in field tests.

Heap biooxidation of sulfidic refractory gold ore requires large amounts of oxygen, as shown in Figure 1. Bacteria, Thiobaci/lus ferrooxidans, are donnant at oxygen concentrations below about 3% in air (1 ppm in aqueous solution) because ofmonod kinet­ics. Hence, the maximum possible utilization is only about 75%, and it may be much less than that due to poor air sweep effi­ciency. At the maximum oxygen utilization, an ore containing two percent pyrite requires nearly 100 cubic meters of air per tonne (4,000 cubic feet per ton). The stoichiometric air require­ment to oxidize arsenopyrite is similar to that of pyrite. While the leaching solution percolating through the heap introduces some dissolved oxygen, the amount is insignificant because of the low solubility of oxygen in water, 7 to 8 ppm at atmospheric saturation. There are only three ways to provide oxygen to the heap: either air flow by natural convection, diffusion of oxygen from the surface (through stagnant air in the air-filled void space in the heap), or forced air ventilation of the heap. Each of these processes will be reviewed.

INTRODUCTION Soft ground tunnels may be above the ground water table or they may be subaqueous. The ground may be clays, silts, sands, gravels, glacial deposits, boulder tills, and any of these in any combination. Because of the relatively low strength and deformability of soils, difficulties often arise in soft ground tunnelling. These soil characteristics and resultant tunnelling difficulties, have had a direct influence on the development of "Lovat" Tunnel Boring Machines. We have been required to recognize and adapt to unusual ground conditions and to follow through with design, fabrication, and field maintenance to ensure dependable, trouble-free operation. The basic "Lovat" machine is a fully shielded, wheel-type with the cuttinghead driven by a monorace type bearing with gear drive incorporated in the bearing. Mechanical innovations have been added to the basic machine which complement the resources of manpower, equipment, and materials available to the contractor for a specific operation. The introduction of liberalisation in Dutch mineral provision has created a lot of uncertainty on how and where to supply for the need of construction raw materials. Some possible effects of this policy shift are: 1. the extraction of materials from small pits with truck transport, 2. an increasing dependence on foreign suppliers, 3. the usage of marine dredged materials, 4. more input of secondary substitutes. The outcome of this policy and the resulting marketbehaviour have consequences for transport and infrastructure and hence for sustainability issues. Mineral provision, on the other hand, is also influenced by the availability of infrastructure. Insufficient transport capacity could hamper the development of mineral projects that render benefits to society. (Even) in a liberalising market for mineral provision, the central and local governments have an important role to play with regard to infrastructure and the effects of transport. Various trends point towards an increasing internationalisation in mineral provision. What will increasing trade and increasing influence of the market mean for transport infrastructure? How should increasing transport be judged with respect to sustainability? In the sustainability discussion these questions will have to be answered on a national as well as on a European scale.

In relation with the construction of the Sölk power station in Steiermark, Austria, tenders were called in October, 1976, for the construction of the 12-km "Donnersbach collector tunnel" by "Steirische Wasserkraftund Elektrizitäts AG". The specified showed both conventional blast tunneling as well as mechanical excavation with a tunneling machine, diameter 3.55 m. Total construction time from the date of the invitation to tender was given as 4 years. Part of the project was the construction of a concrete circular tunnel lining 20 cm thick. In 1977 the contract was awarded to "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Donnersbach", a joint venture formed by two companies, G. Hinteregger & Söhne, Salzburg, and G. Hinteregger, Bregenz. It provided for the project to be carried out with a tunnel boring machine. GEOLOGICAL DATA The entire tunnel was to be bored through a complex of the garnet mica schist group of the Wölz schists formations. These range from highly quartz-bearing to quartzitic mica schists, with thick, discordantly interstratified beds of marble and dolomite. A dust concentration meter has been developed with Australian coal industry support for the measurement of total airborne dust concentrations capable of causing explosions in underground coal mines. The instrument, The University of Queensland Dust Meter (UQDM), measures the effective dielectric constant of a mixture of coal dust and air that is drawn between the plates of a capacitor, the capacitance of which is measured by a ratio-transformer bridge and synchronous detector system. This technique measures small changes in capacitance to approximately 1 part in 106. The unique design of the capacitor sensor permits a precise volume of coal dust and air mixture to be sampled. This arrangement overcomes difficulties inherent in optical dust measurement. The meter is portable, battery powered, incorporates data logging and has intrinsic safety approval. The operation of the meter is discussed. The system is designed to monitor dust concentrations along a coal mining face and provide concentration profiles leading to the development of suppression strategies. If data from underground tests are available, the meter's potential to contribute to establishing safe working conditions underground will be discussed. Other areas of potential application of the measurement technique are also examined.

This paper discusses how the link between design software tools and recycling models can be established in order to predict the recyclability of the car during the design phase, as well as to be able to apply design for recycling on a solid technological basis. Due to the complexity of the design of the car, optimisation of recycling can only be realised based on a sound technological basis, in which the dynamic and statistically distributed parameters affecting the recycling rate are described and understood. This paper gives a brief overview of the dynamic and recycling models, which are developed for optimisation of the recycling of the car and the calculation of recycling rates of the car in the design phase in view of EU legislation. Moreover the possibilities for modelling of shredding and liberation within the recycling system are discussed. The performance of experiments on a fundamental basis in order to collect statistically correct industrial data, supported by a closing mass balance, is referred to on the basis of a large scale industrial recycling experiment. It will be shown how design for recycling and environment can be supported by the sophisticated models as developed by the authors.

Sao Bento Mlnerai;;ao Mine (SBM), located 100 kms northwest of Belo Horlzante, Brazil, was commissioned In 1987t1l to produce 185 kg per month of gold from 240 tpd of refractory sulphide flotation concentrate. The concentrate Is processed by a Sherrill Gordon design pressure oxidation circuit followed by conventional CIL gold recovery process (Flgur .. J). The original plant design foresaw expansion to 480 tpd, and In this regard the acidic effluent neutralisation, CIL and carbon circuits were designed for future expansion to treat the higher tonnage. The pressure oxidation section was sized for 240 tpd with the Intention to double the Installed plant equipment to provide 480 tpd capacity when required. This decision was based In part on the novelty of pressure oxidation to treat refractory sulphide concentrates in 1984 when the process design was finalised. General Mining, Metals & Minerals (Pty) Ltd (GENMIN), has been actively Involved for the past 30 years in the development of bacterial process for the oxidation of refractory gold concentrates; the results of this development program have provided the registered process BIOx®. The successful Implementation of BIOx® technology for treatment of refractory gold concentrates at GENMIN's Fairview Mine In October 1986t2l, as well as the substantial experience accumulated in laboratory and pilot testing of some 40 other sulphide concentrates, Justified reconsideration of the oxidation process best suited to provide the Incremental sulphide oxidation capacity planned for SBM.

INTRODUCTION The process of predicting ground condition with exactitude and of ascertaining appropriate ground control measures is pertinent to each and every excavation. The control and support of soil and/ or rock during and subsequent to excavation is essential in order to overcome or avoid excessive movement, maintain stability or preserve integrity of the excavation, handle or prevent excessive water intrusion or hydrostatic pressure build up, and produce an excavation that is safe and suitable for its intended purpose. The design of support systems has primarily been, until recently, based upon experience and empirical or semiempirical guidelines, which do not lend themselves to thorough analytical calculations giving rise to the desired degree of confidence in design of such systems and consequently, several, if not a majority of support systems, no doubt, are overdesigned. The primary objective of this paper is, therefore, to briefly outline engineering considerations leading towards the design of ground control systems for near vertical excavations extending to shallow depths in metamorphic rock formations. Several engineering considerations including the selection of temporary support systems, technical aspects of design, and the sequence as well as details of construction, are briefly outlined. Attempts have been made during the last three decades to establish a correlation between respirable dust dosage and the degree of progression of pneumoconiosis or silicosis amongst mine workers. Fair correlation has been possible only after the Johannesburg Pneumoconiosis Conference established mass concentration of dust in the respirable size range as the true measure of the incidence of pneumoconiosis. The author had established a good correlation between cumulative total respirable dust dosage as well as cumulative silica dosage and the category of pneumoconiosis according to ILO classification at Mufulira Copper Mine. Studies at Hutti also show a linear relationship between the average cumulative dust and silica dosage md the category of pneumoconiosis. However the maximum tolerable cumulative dust dosage for - prolonged exposure is 182 mg month/m3 - at Hutti as compared to 275 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. Similarly the maximum tolerable silica dosage for - prolonged exposure is Only 35 mg month/m3 at Hutti as compared to 55 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. The TLV for dust concentration at Hutti works out at 0.6 mg/m3 compared to 1.1 mg/m3 at Mufulira and the TLV of silica concentration at Hutti is 0.117 mg/m3 compared to 0.25 mg/m3 at Mufulira. The Hutti figure is however, closer to the TLV of 0.1 mg/m 3 recommended by ACGIH.

This paper discusses the effects of seam inclination and lateral stresses on the stress distribution in pillars in inclined coal seams. The average pillar stress is a function of the overburden weight, the mine depth, the effective extraction ratio and the angle of seam inclination. Normal and shear stresses in the pillar are computed by numerical modeling. In medium dipping seams, leaving a pillar with its axis normal to the stratification causes a shearing stress concentration in the top and bottom corners of the pillar. This results in the pillar possibly becoming less stable in comparison to pillars in horizontal coal seams. Therefore, to reduce the stresses, it may be necessary to leave the pillar at an angle of b deviated from the normal axis to stratification. A mathematically approximate formula for determining b is proposed, and the results are confirmed by numerical modeling.

This paper quantifies the detrimental effects of pyrite and stibnite on gold leaching kinetics. Means to reduce the effect of these minerals by addition of lead nitrate and oxygen are presented. A significant retarding effect was observed when the pyrite concentration was 20%. A pretreatment with lead nitrate reduced the extent of gold surface coating by Ag, Fe and S. Stibnite, at a concentration as low as 20 ppm, significantly affected the gold leaching kinetics through forming a passivating film of Sb(V) oxide possibly Sb2O5. The most practical way to alleviate the effect of stibnite is to leach the materials at a moderate pH with addition of lead nitrate. A low temperature reduced the efficiency of lead nitrate to counteract the effect of stibnite. The increase of dissolved oxygen is not favourable to alleviate the coating of stibnite on gold.

During the latter part of the twentieth century exploitation of mineral resources, and gold mining in particular, experienced a resurgence in Europe, with major mining houses and many junior companies involved in exploration and subsequent mine development. Gold projects in particular were actively encouraged and exploration programmes and permitting studies initiated in more than 15 countries, both within the European Union (EU) and the former eastern bloc. During the initial period, governments in many countries provided active support. Following a series of negative environmental mining incidents in the latter part of the century public opinion, often ill-informed, led to political pressure to withdraw governmental assistance. This in turn resulted in the revocation of exploration licenses, and ultimately to the failure to develop a number of potentially world-class mines within the region. Despite these setbacks, gold production in Europe continues, and is probably higher now than 20 years ago. The mining industry is currently coming to terms with both changing attitudes of governments, and the increase in scope and prescriptive nature of legislation. Recent experiences, particularly in Greece and Turkey, exemplify the problems faced by the industry in the region, which are causing major mining companies to reconsider future activities in Europe. The paper presents an overview of European gold mining and its environmental performance in the context of international practice, new legislation, and public perception of mining generally. The rationale of governments in withdrawing support for the industry is questioned, and the feasibility of achieving sustainability where there is no level playing field globally is reviewed. The question is posed to governments, regulators and mining companies alike as to whether there is a future, not only for gold mining, but for the minerals industry in general, within the EU.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest will hold its 15th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards banquet on Saturday, Dec. 6,1997 in Tucson, AZ, preceeding the Arizona Conference of SME. The Mining Foundation's Hall of Fame, located in Tucson, recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by individuals and industry partners. A permanent display of honoree vitae is located at the Arizona Historical Society at 949 E. Second St. in Tucson. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two honorees from mining history are chosen by the Hall of Fame committee and the board of governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation also initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. And in 1995, an award was instituted to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee is James R. Moffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc. He will be present as guest of honor and featured speaker. The Hall of Fame will induct John V. Dorr, metallurgist and chemical engineer. Also inducted will be Frederick L. Ransome, a geologist. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Hugo T. Dummett, senior vice president, Exploration BHP Minerals, and Spencer R. Titley, professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to the Colorado School of Mines for its continued support to the mining industry through education and research. Prior to 1974, bauxite-producing countries were poorly informed about important aspects of the bauxite/alumina/aluminium industry. This placed them at a disadvantage in negotiations over the development of the industry with interested parties. Since the formation of IBA, its member governments have acquired a fuller awareness of the structure and operation of the industry. The role of IBA is to enlarge the relevant information base of member governments, to act as a forum for the exchange of information on the industry and to form a focal point for multilateral discussions on problems in the industry with corporate interests and with governments of consuming countries.

A sewer tunnel being constructed through an urban commercial area was to pass the site of a former gasoline service station. The site was known to have contained leaking underground storage tanks. An environmental assessment of soils on the alignment was performed, and measures were implemented to handle expected contaminants. Despite these precautions, an explosion occurred in the heading when liquid gasoline was encountered. Four workers were injured. This paper presents the findings of an investigation into the cause of the explosion, and examines how concerted efforts by the parties involved failed to prevent it. The level of guidance provided by OSHA Code provisions for tunneling in gassy conditions is discussed.
