The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development, and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made, and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been- in progress for seven years and the writer of this chapter has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and seven years of exploitation. The Woodsreef mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and fiber. Because of the latter feature, much research has been undertaken by Woods- reef and other scientific organizations in Australia, England, and Canada regarding the Woodsreef fiber. The answers to some of the problems have negated some accepted concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques. Some of these new techniques include the adoption of microscopic fiber counts as a routine procedure, the modification of accepted evaluation procedures, the development of new machines for dedusting fibers, and the recognition of a fiber with a unique milling behavior pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be broadly divided into those associated with the geology and the physical properties of the fiber. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognized during the exploration stages, a feasiblity evaluation may be just a little closer to the actual. The Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos deposit (latitude 30°24' S, longitude 150°44' E) is located 80 km north of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. The mine has been in production for six years and has a present scheduled mining rate of 33.11 Mt/y. An eight rock line mill treats an average of 7000 t/day, after beneficiation, and yields fiber grades in the range of group 4 to group 6 with some floats. The estimated re- serves of 30.56 Mt, with an ore to waste ratio of 1:3.0, are contained in two main zones that are designated the North and South zones. Mining started in the South Zone in 1972 and then, be- cause of the higher ore value, moved to the North Zone in 1975. Presently, there are two distinct open cuts referred to as the South and North pits that will eventually be worked together. The Woodsreef mine is owned by Woodsreef Mines Ltd. and is operated by Chrysotile Corp. of Australia Pty. Ltd., and is one of only two producing asbestos mines in Australia. The second mine is at Baryulgil, (latitude 29°13' S, longitude 152°37' E), and is operated by a subsidiary of Woodsreef Mines Ltd. This operation produces about 500 t/y for a captive market. An exploration program is being conducted in the area surrounding this small producer with a significant degree of success. The concepts developed during the exploitation of the Woodsreef deposit are being incorporated in the evaluation of the Baryulgil area, and if the Baryulgil deposit proves to be eco- nomic it is hoped that this approach will eliminate some of the major crises that have beset the production at Woodsreef during the first four years of operation. Design of plugs for abandonment of boreholes and shafts may be governed by the bond strength between the plug and host rock. Presented in this paper are the results of push-out tests on two types of expansive cement grout plugs emplaced in rock salt. The average interface shear strengths range from 2 to 12 MPa. Peak shear stresses (assuming an elastic stress distribution along the interface) are up to eight times higher. Dissolution along the interface may be enhanced by clay inclusions in the salt and appears to reduce bond strengths. Application of the results to the design of plugs for larger openings (e.g., shafts, drifts, or boreholes) is discussed.

The Stillwater Mining Company Base Metals Refinery (BMR) leaches a PGM bearing nickel/copper smelter matte to produce a concentrated platinum/palladium filtercake. The BMR employs a two-stage sulfate based leaching process. The first stage (nickel atmospheric leach circuit) leach is performed under atmospheric conditions at elevated temperature to leach the majority of the nickel present in the matte feed. Approximately 85% of the solids mass fed to first stage leach report to the second stage (pressure leach circuit) leach. The pressure leach circuit consists of two batch autoclaves in parallel. Each autoclave has a separate feed tank. This paper will describe the second stage leaching process and report associated operating costs.

The potash industry in Saskatchewan, Canada, has advanced in numerous mining and ore processing areas over the last decade. This article describes these innovations and their effect on the industry in the area. During the 1970s, Canada's Saskatchewan province became a world leader, second only to the USSR, in potash production for crop fertilizer. Despite a serious oversupply in the early part of the decade, and a drop in demand due to the agricultural impact of the oil crisis, the Saskatchewan potash industry continued to make extensive capital expenditures to bring mining and processing innovations onstream. These innovations were directed at reducing production costs, improving work conditions, and overcoming environmental concerns.

The first of this two part series takes a look at some of the history and types of flotation as well as agents and mechanisms involved in it. Part two, next month, will examine flotation processes as applied to various sulfide and nonsulfide mineral ores. Flotation-"froth" flotation-is a physicochemical method of concentrating finely ground ores. The process involves chemical treatment of an ore pulp to create conditions favorable for the attachment of predetermined mineral particles to air bubbles. The air bubbles carry the selected minerals to the surface of the pulp, there forming a stabilized froth that is skimmed off and from which the predetermined mineral particles are recovered. Other minerals remain submerged in the pulp.

Following a severe recession in the early 1980's, mining companies have taken significant steps to improve metallurgy and reduce operating costs. They do not view chemical reagents and the long-term relationship with reagent producers the same way they did two decades ago. This paper discusses the general perspective of changes that have taken place over the years, especially with respect to cost of production, selling price and environmental constraints. A cooperative program between the consumers and producers of chemical reagents is recommended to understand each other's problems and identify the present and future needs of the mining industry. This approach will be beneficial to the long-term survival of both parties.

An opportunity to compare the performance of different tunnel boring machines (TBMs) operating in similar rock conditions occurred during the construction of a major water scheme in the UK. The principal objectives of this study were: (i) To collate, analyse and present the data available for the four TBM drives of the Kielder Aquaduct Scheme in terms of the tunnelling system performance and the downtime experienced, particularly where these were influenced or controlled by geotechnical parameters. (ii) To isolate the major sources of machine downtime and highlight those aspects of the tunnelling system that critically affect tunnelling progress rates (iii) To determine, by statistical techniques, relations between TBM performance and rock properties.

The objectives of this investigation were to study the zeta potential characteristics of a Powder River Basin coal in water and to study the effects of zeta potential on the agglomeration of coal particles. The electrokinetic measurements show that the zeta potential of the coal is dependent on pH, temperature, coal concentration and contact time with water. The effects of various additives for changing the zeta potential of the coal were also evaluated. It was found that the strength of the coal agglomerates is increased when the zeta potential diminishes. Neutralizing the zeta potential enhances agglomeration. Therefore, it is important to control the zeta potential of coal to achieve optimum performance in coal-particle agglomeration.

The application of conveyor belting in bulk materials handling is crucial to the success of most mining enterprise selection of the cover rubber grade and thickness has a direct bearing on the cost per ton conveyed. Current and future demands placed on belt covers by higher speeds, increase capacities and greater lifts means today's cover will not be adequate for tomorrow's applications. The simple selections of RMA Grade I and I1 and MSHA above and below ground need to be expanded upon. This paper describes various new approaches for selecting conveyor belt covers for specific applications. It also presents examples of material and compounding techniques available to the belt manufacturer to improve the performance of their covers.

Radiation protection in uranium mines and nuclear reactors is compared, with the objective of determining if any radiation protection practices which have worked well in one area can be adapted to the other area, especially from reactors to mines since radiation protection is more highly developed in reactors. Several areas are identified where improvements can be made in radiation protection in mines, the most important being improvement in ventilation at the workplace, greater attention to special monitoring during upset conditions, and a need for a substantial increase in radiation protection staff. It is concluded that, although considerable room exists for improvement, the general approach to radiation protection presently being followed seems appropriate for the circumstances encountered in mining.

Some important electrochemical aspects involved in the bioleaching of mixed sulfides have been discussed with reference to selective sphalerite dissolution from different binary mineral combinations. Combination potentials and galvanic currents were measured in different binary combinations of sphalerite with other minerals such as galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite in order to under- stand the electrochemical dissolution behaviour of sphalerite when coupled with other minerals. The effect of applied DC potential was also studied with reference to selective sphalerite dissolution from a binary mineral mixture. An application of a potential of -500 mV (vs SCE) was found to enhance bacterial growth as well as selective sphalerite dissolution. Factors influencing bioleaching of sphalerite under a negative applied potential are discussed.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are studying the time- dependent response of rock stressed along weakness planes. The objective is to improve mine safety by reducing the number of roof falls that cause injuries and fatalities to miners. Researchers conducted direct- shear tests on mudstone overcored from a coal mine roof. Results showed frictional strength weakens with displacement along the shearing planes. Results of direct-shear creep tests also showed time-dependent deformation. Test measurements were compared to classical analytical models. Results suggest that the risk of roof collapse may be decreased through layout and support design to reduce creep rates and thus slow progression toward failure.

A process has been developed to recover gold and copper from two waste materials at the Bougainville Copper Limited mine in Papua New Guinea. It involves the bioleaching, in reactors, of a pyrite concentrate to liberate refractory gold and generate sulphuric acid, ferric sulphate and biomass for bacterial leaching of a chalcopyritic waste rock dump. Gold is to be recovered by cyanide leaching and copper by solvent extraction/electrowinning. The reactor bioleaching was developed in continuously operated reactors of 1 m3 capacity by CRA Advanced Technical Development at Cockle Creek, while the dump leaching was developed in 750 kg columns on site at Bougainville Copper Limited. The process was to be piloted on site.

Spectroscopic techniques are becoming increasingly popular for characterizing the interior of adsorbed layers of surfactants and polymers at solid- liquid interface as well as in the identification of com- pounds on mineral surfaces. This review encompasses the application of fluorescence and ESR spectroscopic techniques to reveal the microscopic environment of the adsorbed layers of surfactants and polymers on minerals with a special reference to the adsorption of anionic surfactants (e.g., sodium dodecyl sulfate) and polyelectrolytes (e.g., polyacrylic acid) at positively charged mineral (e.g., alumina) - water interfaces. Finally, the utility of XPS and auger techniques to identify the surface elemental composition of different mineral species has been related to their flotation efficiency.

The Endako, British Columbia, deposit was initially discovered in 1927 by two local men, Charles H. Foote and Alf Lagdon, who were at that time on a hunting expedition. Four mineral claims were located to cover an area of quartz-molybdenite float that was centered on two small ridges. They subsequently uncovered a 0.5-m (1.6-ft) wide vein on which an inclined shaft was sunk to a depth of 8.3 m (27.2 ft) in 1934. Additionally, a short adit was driven to intersect another vein. Numerous trenches and small pits were also dug. Small test shipments of vein material from this early work were sent to G.S. Eldridge and Co. in Vancouver for metallurgical testing. A concentrate assaying 89.2% MoS, was produced with a recovery reported as 93.3%. The concentrate was essentially free of copper, arsenic, and phosphate. The property was examined by many geologists and engineers during 1934 to 1952, but the only work done was undertaken by the owners in order to maintain their claims in good standing. In 1952, Kennco Explorations (Canada) Ltd. carried out a limited program of bulldozer trenching, sampling, and geological mapping before relin- quishing their option. In 1956, American Standard Mines Ltd. acquired an option on the property, but no assessment work was apparently recorded and the property was allowed to lapse. The key claims were restaked in 1959 by C. Riley and H.T. James of Vancouver. The property was optioned from the new owners by Andrew Robertson in July 1961, and a small amount of trenching was conducted. Robertson, on behalf of his own company, R & P Metals Corp., reoptioned the property in January 1962. The initial results of this work were favorable and justified further exploration. The additional finances required to continue the program resulted in the formation of Endako Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) on June 21, 1962. Field work by R & P Metals and the first Endako Mines exploration was directed by Bob Couts.

SCOTT COULTER: Our second speaker today is Brian Flintoff. Brian graduated from the University of Alberta in 1973 with a master's of science degree and worked as a project metallurgist at Brenda Mines until 1977. He returned to the University of Alberta in late 1977 to work on his Ph.D. and later joined the faculty of engineering in 1980, leaving in 1988 to rejoin Brenda in the newly formed process technology division. In 1998 he left Svedala-Brenda to take a position with Simons International's newly formed enterprise development services group. His topic today is "People: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle." INTRODUCTION BRIAN FLINTOFF: Historically, the mining industry has relied on the people within a corporation to get things done. The culture of most companies was one of a slow but sure development of people, processes, equipment, and technology. Many of the larger companies supported in-house engineering and research organizations. However, the metal market pressures of the 1980s and the emergence of the global economy in the late '80s and early '90s put enormous financial pressures on the industry. As the old adage says, "necessity is the mother of invention," and the mining industry, like many others, has undergone a transformation. A cornerstone element of the transformation was the downsizing (or right-sizing) that was calculated to "trim the fat" from the capital and operating budgets. The goal was and is to find the highest sustainable operating profit.' While I'm sure one can find examples of losers (e.g., those who can be classified as suffering from corporate anorexia or institutional Alzheimer's) in such business reengineering efforts, there is little doubt that, on the whole, the transformation has been successful. The reality that now faces mill management is "How to do more with less?" At the risk of oversimplifying, one can look at this on two levels:

China, a globally recognized major mining country, holds one of the largest quantities of tailings pond country in the world. The total number of mines in China has been ranked first in the world. It is a major concern for Chinese safety management to give great importance for tailings pond safety, stability and sustainable development. For the past few years, China has increased efforts to investigate and govern discrete issues of tailings and to carry out a series of special renovation and comprehensive treatment actions to improve safety management levels and to decrease the likelihood of tailings pond accidents. In the end of 2015, China successfully eliminated hazardous tailings ponds and dangerous tailings ponds. Moreover, the total number of tailings decreased from 12,273 to 8,869. However, there are still 1,425 "head-top" tailings that threaten the lower masses’ safety. This greatly signifies the Chinese tailings pond safety, stability as well as sustainable development. In turn, this may improve the Chinese tailings life cycle safety management system and help reach the goal of attaining closed-loop management in the tailings pond life cycle. Based on the summary of the tailings pond accidents in both China and other countries from 1961 to 2015, and by analyzing the types and causes of accident, this paper investigated the successful experiences and effective measurements of British Columbia (Canada) and Australia in the tailings pond life cycle safety management. This paper summed up each country’s tailings life cycle safety management requirements and analysed the characteristics and differences of tailings safety management by comparing 5 aspects: tailings life cycle safety management process, main design parameter, construction requirements, monitoring, and the tailings pond closing management. Based on these observations, this paper suggests some measurements to improve the tailings pond life cycle safety management in China, such as strengthening tailings pond safety management, improving tailings classification, increasing design parameter values, establishing mine reclamation fund, and so on.
