In many unit operations, there are more or less developed turbulent flow conditions. Then, macroturbulence influences the transport phenomena of the particles and microturbulence controls the stresses acting on fluid and solid particles or agglomerates as well as the collisions between particles. Consequently, these conditions have to betaken into consideration for modeling and optimization. The results of corresponding approaches are demonstrated taking classification and flotation as examples. But, at present, extensive simplifying assumptions have to be made.

Since plant start-up in January 1983, Golden Sunlight Mines Inc. has implemented several process changes and improvements. Among these are a pulp preaeration circuit and a sand tailing retreatment circuit. The preaeration circuit reduces reagent consumption during gold dissolution. The sand tailing retreatment circuit was added to recover and process separately pyrite concentrate to maintain acceptable overall gold recoveries with the more refractory sulfide ores. Research and plant operating data along with process and improvement descriptions are presented.

Consolidation Coal Company's Loveridge Mine operates the only coarse coal hoisting and overland slurry transport system in North America. The system has been in operation since April 1980 and according to current haulage levels will have handled over two million tons by this conference date. Original performance goals have been exceeded. The systems will be described and their application to rapid excavation and tunneling haulage needs will be discussed. New Zealand is a small, almost pristinely pure country environmentally speaking. It is blessed with an abundance of clear waterways, lush green vegetation and fresh clean air. It is a country in which agriculture and forestry predominate, and mining developments have to be introduced prepared to answer in considerable detail the question "How will this proposal affect the New Zealand environment as we know it today". Those who make the legislation have the difficult problem of establishing standards at a level which will maintain as far as possible the status quo without unduly inhibiting the developments currently approaching the starting line. We have been fortunate in some sense in that since the demise of the early gold rush days by the 1920's, little mineralisation of a complex nature has been uncovered in New Zealand. Coal fields have been developed in the central North Island, and on the West Coast and Southland regions of the South Island. A ban on large scale open cast mines in the Coromandel area has restricted mining in that highly prospective area, although three large gold prospects have got underway elsewhere in the last three years. There is no other ore processing being undertaken at present. Some recent proposals involving lead, gold and silver in complex arseno­ sulphides have failed to get the necessary approvals and have been discarded. Our ore processing problems are therefore straightforward ones, and confine themselves to acid drainage, mercury handling and disposal, and cyanide.

Most miners know that Latin America's major mineral areas are in the mountains of Mexico and down the backbone of the Andes in South America. These areas comprise some of the more rugged and challenging parts of the world's geography, and the risks of doing business in these areas are just as difficult as the impressive task of extracting and processing ores. However, Latin America does contain mineral deposits, some untouched and many to be discovered, that convince venturesome people that the tremendous effort required to mine them will be worthwhile. The rewards have often been adequate in the past. Hopefully, they will be in the future. Background The safest statement that can be made about Latin America is that the "ballgame is constantly changing." Here are some examples: Chile. Under President Frei in the 1960s, Chile welcomed foreign mining interests, even though the government was acquiring significant ownership interests in the big copper properties. Then, under Allende in the 1970s, the big mines were taken over and compensation was denied on various grounds including the allegation that extraordinary profits had been made that should have been taxed. After Allende, an about-face was made in policy; former owners of the expropriated mines received some compensation and new foreign investment was seriously welcomed. This paper describes part of a geotechnical study based on stress determinations and convergence measurements conducted to assess the long-term stability of an experimental room-and-pillar oil shale mine. A rock mechanics program was initiated in 1971 at the Colony Mine as part of a large study conducted for the design of a commercial operation. The Colony Development Operation is a joint venture currently consisting of four active members; Ashland Oil Inc., Atlantic Richfield Company (Operator of the project), Shell Oil Company, and The Oil Shale Corporation. Although oil shale commercialization plans are presently suspended, rock mechanics instrumentation has been continued as part of Colony's policy in maintaining readiness to proceed with a commercial shale oil plant when national energy policies became better defined. The property is located in the southern edge of the Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado, approximately 200 miles west of Denver. Experimental mining operations were conducted from 1965 to 1972 with one of the major objectives of the pilot mine being the assessment of opening and pillar sizes for the determination of extraction ratio and life of the property. Mining was conducted in a 60 foot thick portion of the Mahogany Zone in the Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation, at depths of 600 to 850 feet by a one-bench system. Pillar dimensions were 58 feet by 58 feet and rooms were 55 feet wide.

BACKGROUND The development of public transportation in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area is, as in other cities, closely tied to the development of the area because of increases in population and commercial and industrial activity. Local transportation first appeared in the area in the 1870s when the population was fewer than 10,000 residents. Around 1910, after many consolidations of competitive interests, two large railway companies were formed: The Los Angeles Railway, which provided urban transportation in the Los Angeles City area, and the Pacific Electric Railway, which primarily provided suburban and interurban transportation. These two entities continued with their operations until after World War II, when the ownership passed on to the Los Angeles Transit Lines and the Metropolitan Coach Lines, respectively. By then the railroads needed new equipment, track rehabilitation, and, of course, more money-paying patrons. Lack of grade separation of railway facilities from other traffic increased commute times and encouraged travel by private automobiles. The romantic era of hopping on a Pacific Electric Company "Big Red Car" was coming to an end. As early as 1917, in fact, bus lines were substituted for unprofitable rail service. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority (LMTA) was established in 1951 by the California Legislature to study and plan for improvements in the public transportation facilities in the Los Angeles area. In March of 1958 the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority took over the operation of the two lines.

The Sacaton mine is a relatively new open¬pit copper mine owned by Asarco, Inc., which has been in production only a few years. The mineral deposits consist of two ore zones; a western, near-surface zone minable by open-pit methods, and a deeper eastern zone which will have to be mined underground, probably by block caving. The copper deposits are related to small quartz monzonite intrusives implaced into Precambrian granites. Both rock types act as hosts for the copper mineralization, which has been secondarily enriched sufficiently to constitute ore. In the western zone the enriched supergene chalcocite has been subjected to postenrichment oxidation processes with partial destruction of the chalcocite blanket. The deeper eastern chalcocite zone has not been as severely affected by later supergene processes. Several mineralogical populations are represented in the total copper deposit. Leached capping overlies the chalcocite enriched zone, and in the western ore body there is a very irregular interface between the leached and enriched zone, which is complicated by oxide copper minerals irregularly distributed. Primary lower-grade chalcopyrite mineralization occurs below the enriched zone. When mining commenced near the top of the enriched zone, considerable difficulty was encountered in correlating the actual grade of ore in place with the estimated grade of the mining blocks. The mineralogical complexity and fairly wide spacing of diamond drilling made reliable grade estimation of individual ore blocks a difficult procedure.

Silicic volcanic ash and its alteration product, bentonite (montmorillonite and cristobalite), occur widely within sedimentary phosphate deposits. The genetic link, if any, between volcanism and phosphate deposition has yet to be satisfactorily established The phosphatic member of the Santa Margarita Formation (upper Miocene) in northwestern Ventura County, California, consists of approximately 15 per cent volcanic ash and bentonite. Ash and bentonite units greater than one foot thick can be subdivided into a lower zone of airfall origin and an upper zone of mixed ash and terrigenous detritus washed in from surrounding land areas. This upper zone also contains up to 20 percent phosphate pellets. These thick volcaniclastic units are typically overlain sharply by thin beds (less than 6 inches thick) of relatively pure, silica-cemented pelletal phosphorite. The shelf basin in which the phosphatic sediments accumulated was characterized by quiet, reducing but not euxenic bottom waters; Abundant decaying organic debris, mainly diatoms, served as a reservoir of readily available phosphate. The sudden influx of a large volume of silicic volcanic ash into this basin and its subsequent alteration to montmorillonite had two profound effects on thechemistry of the interstitial and bottom waters: (1) during alteration magnesium was removed from these waters and incorporated into the montmorillonite lattice, and (2) the pH of these waters increased as alteration progressed Both of these effects led to the crystallization in the bottom waters of carbonate fluorapatite. This accumulated as thin phosphorite beds immediately above the volcaniclastic units.

INTRODUCTION Designers of major public works projects in the past have displayed varying degrees of environmental consciousness, and tunnel designers in particular have always had to deal with certain environmental considerations - ventilation, lighting, aesthetics - as matters of primary design. Today, however, with a widening sector of the public becoming environmentally aware, tunnels are treated as elements of whole transportation systems, and are subject to increasing environmental scrutiny. The Route H-3 tunnels in Hawaii are examples of the time, care, and detail involved in a major rock tunnel project. Project Description The Route. Interstate Route H-3 is a proposed 10-mile highway crossing the Koolau Mountain Range on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, providing a direct connection between the Pearl Harbor area and the windward part of the island in the vicinity of Kaneohe. It is designed as a dual highway with provision to accommodate mass transit. As shown on Figure 1, the project includes two sets of twin bore tunnels (through the Main Koolau Range and through Red Hill), three highway sections of which two are through largely undeveloped mountain valleys (South Halawa and Moanalua), a viaduct, and three interchanges. From the Halawa Interchange to the Kaneohe Interchange, the proposed highway consists of two 3-lane roadways separated by a median where the highway is at grade. INTRODUCTION Gaudin (1), considered that "the mechanism of mineral collection is the central problem of flotation theory". From their work on adsorption phenomena in flotation for more than fifty years (2), Gaudin and his co-workers have made major contributions to the elucidation of this mechanism, a fact acknowledged by their contemporaries in the field (e.g. (3)). Their investigations in a number of areas, e.g. demonstrating that submonolayer quantities of adsorbed collector species can induce flotation, or identifying the influence of substances which can activate or depress (1), have helped to provide the basis for and the development of a theory to account for the interaction between mineral and collector. It was established in the late fifties (4) that the presence of oxygen is a prerequisite for the flotation of metal sulfides with thiol collectors. This fact rendered inadequate the concept of simple ion adsorption being responsible for rendering these minerals hydrophobic. The requirement for oxygen has been explained (1) in terms of this species being a component in chemical reactions between the sulfide surface and the collector. Gaudin has been instrumental in identifying the products of chemical reactions at sulfide minerals (1.5), a line of work which has been continued particularly by Finkelstein and co-workers in South Africa (6). It is a very difficult task to estimate the immediate roof and support behavior in a room-and-pillar mining section in the initial phase of the mining project. There is little information available at this phase, and it is restricted to geomechanic characterization of the rock layers from cores samples, and the in-situ instrumentation of experimental entries and intersections. Even being a pilot excavation for roof support test a good indicator for the behavior of the immediate roof, its behavior for a full excavation mining section is different from a single intersection of two entries, mainly because the stress redistribution caused by the multiple entries excavation and face advance for a full excavation section. The objective of this paper was to calibrate a 3-D numerical model of an experimental intersection, based on the in-situ instrumentation of an experimental intersection excavation, and the geomechanic description of the rock layers. The numerical model was built with the same specifications as the excavation test, including the entry geometry and roof support. The numerical model calibration was based on wire extensometers that were installed at different positions in the roof of the pilot excavation, and on the geomechanic characterization of the rock layers that form the roof, coal seam, and floor. Therefore, it is possible to estimate whether the roof support specification adopted in the test phase will be good enough for the development of the entire mining section.

"Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBAs) are intended to be a negotiated agreement between an industrial proponent and a community, local or regional citizens’ organization. Although the elements have grown over the past two decades from a simple agreement to exceedingly complex legal frameworks, the intention remains the same: to outline the roles and responsibilities of the two stakeholders and the natural resource development on their lands beyond environmental assessment. These agreements were born out of comprehensive indigenous land claims and have become the cornerstone of community engagement today in most indigenous nations. In the case of mixed communities, those that have beneficiaries of land claims and those who are not, social acceptance remains uneven and reflective of an unequal distribution of decision-making power (political ecology). This Differential Social License can cause conflict and a breakdown of the societal fabric that binds communities of diverse populations, resulting in inequality, fictitious wealth generation and failure of infrastructure. This paper presents a case study of how the development of Differential Social License developed in the Hamlet of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut as a result of an IBA negotiated between Tahera Diamond Corp. and the Kitikmeot Inuit Organisation in 2004 for the Jericho Diamond Mine.Introduction / Background Social license (social license to operate or SLO) has become an essential part of the social governance ‘toolkit’ demanded by mining stakeholders in today’s world. Stakeholders are now insistent that companies operate more closely under the tenets of sustainable development and provide for an increased level of community participation. Social license is not simply a matter of communicating with a community, to earn its consent for or acceptance of a project. It requires that we engage with the individuals and organisations who ally themselves with communities, or who sometimes side with dissident factions of a community. SLO is a process associated with and informed by political ecology or the recognition that unequal decision-making power exists amongst stakeholders."

In this paper, the methodologies that should be applied by the progressive mining industry in order to fall within the frame of the sustainable development are summarized. Titanium solves corrosion, maintenance and environmental problems in many reactor and autoclave applications. Titanium clad construction permits autoclave designers a great deal of flexibility combined with significant cost reduction. Titanium alloys can be selectively applied in specific regions of the auto­clave to accommodate local environmental conditions. Resistance to general corrosion, crevice corrosion, abrasion, and ignition conditions can be accomplished selectively and eco­nomically. On July 1, 1999, most domestic metal mines will have to report releases of toxic chemicals into the environment for the first time as required by SARA Title 313. Some of these reportable releases will appear huge in relation to reports by other industries. The reasons for the potentially large reportable releases, special considerations for mining operations, and strategies for dealing with the reports are described. Data composited from experience with several mining companies is presented in the context of a typical goldmine.

An insufficient hydrologic data base exists for most large and small coal basins in Alaska owing to the lack of need in the past to collect data. The runoff process is insufficiently understood which is complicated by specifically northern phenomenon, and the lack of understanding of hydrologic relationships in permafrost environment. This paper presents an understanding of the hydrologic effects of frozen ground and presents methods by which the influence of surface mining upon the hydrologic balance can be analyzed.

This paper illustrates an approach to quantitatively document the degree of technical conservatism to be incorporated into the design of a waste isolation system in bedded salt. It is anticipated that for an actual repository site the key performance constraints and/or design bases identified in this paper will be reviewed, and modified or supplemented as required. Ultimate acceptance of a repository will be dependent upon scientific peer input and scrutiny of the demonstrated conservatism inherent in each specific repository site and design.

Tube furnace experiments have been performed to evaluate the lime roasting of pyrite in air. The sulfur volatilized was measured over time. Variables studied included: form of lime, sodium sulfate additions, temperature, air flow rate, lime to pyrite weight ratio and pyrite particle size. It was found that more than 98% of the sulfur can be retained at a reactor temperature of 650°C, with a slight excess of calcium hydroxide. The roast products are primarily hematite and calcium sulfate.
