The Bureau of Mines has studied the impact of shuttle car movement on face ventilation. Real-time measurements of air velocity, methane gas, and respirable dust were recorded and compared with a time study of face shuttle car movement. Work was conducted in a blowing face ventilation section where a scrubber-equipped mining machine operated. Air velocities decreased by an average of 35% as the shuttle car entered the face, restricting air flow, and increased by an average of 35% as the shuttle car pulled away from the face, drawing with it additional air. Return air methane levels follow the face air flow volumes, decreasing as air volume increases. The surge of air created as the shuttle car leaves the face helps to dilute methane. Respirable dust levels, however, were found to increase as the air flow increased and decreased the scrubber capture efficiency.

Pretreatment of sulfidic refractory gold ore by biooxidation in coarse-crushed ore heaps is a promising new technology, especially for low-grade ores that cannot afford pressure leaching or roasting. An algebraic equation for determining the economically optimum biooxidation of the sulfide minerals in the ore is provided that is based on the empirical biooxidation rate constant for the ore, the project's financial discount rate, the ore grades of both refractory and non-refractory gold, and the gold price. Then, the economically optimum duration of bioheap pretreatment, t$, is determined from its logarithmic relation to the optimum fractional extent of ore biooxidation, F$, through the ore's biooxidation rate constant. In doing so, it is assumed that the ore is adequately crushed and amenable to bioheap pretreatment and that the cumulative oxidation of the ore with time is known from ore testing so that the rate constant can be determined.

This paper analyzes the 1982 coal mine accident data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for key equipment types, by mine type, and by geographic region. The differences in hazards associated with the various equipment types are studied both in absolute (i.e., total number of incidences) and relative (i.e., incidence rate or the number of incidences per 200,000 employee or exposure hours) terms. The paper compares and contrasts the total number of incidents as well as incidence rates classified by several types of severity measures such as lost workdays cases, mean number of lost workdays per lost workdays case, fatal cases, non- fatal cases without lost workdays, total number of cases, and total number of lost workdays This statistical analysis shows that significant differences in hazards exist not only due to equipment type but also due to mine type and geographic region.

A novel principle for a waste repository, based on a backfilled thermosyphon as the functional unit, is proposed. Such a unit reduces temperatures and temperature gradients in the vicinity of a waste package and in the repository near field, reducing leach rates from packages and thermomechanical disturbance of the rock mass. Preliminary analyses confirm the mode of performance of the system, and reveal some interesting features of material transport and sealing in backfill and rock fissures. The thermosyphon combines attractively with the prospect of developing a near-field geochemical trap with chemical specificity for radionuclides. It is proposed that a thermosyphon repository may provide superior performance of engineered and natural barriers compared with conventional designs. The achievement of the ability to predict accurately the performance of the thermosyphon, relative to other isolation schemes, will represent a benchmark in the understanding of the absolute performance of any repository.

Based on theoretical and experimental researches of phosphate and carbonate minerals flotation in the presence of soluable glass at various pH values and sodium silicate concentrations, it has been established that the presence of soluble glass in solution leads to formation of silicate compounds on the surface of phosphate and carbonate minerals causing change in their floatability for the worse. The harmful influence of soluable salts is done by tying of collector as metallic soaps, forming precipitates on the surface of minerals to be floated and causing their depression of flotation, and breaching of the froth etc. Depressing action of slimes and products of interaction with collector depends on the ratio of values and signs of potentials of the mineral surfaces. The possibility of phosphate and gangue minerals separation can be evaluated by comparing the minimum-necessary concentrations of collector required for their flotation.

The Morenci/Metcalf porphyry copper mining operation, located in southeastern Arizona, currently processes approximately 91,000 tonnes of ore per day and has copper ore reserves estimated to be in excess of one billion tonnes. Functional groups within the Geology Department (currently staffed with six professional and two support personnel) include mine geology, project geology, and hydrogeology. The primary task of mine geologists is daily preblast bench face mapping with grade and mill amenability estimates. Auxiliary duties include detailed in-pit metal distribution evaluation, mineragraphic work and flux quarry geology. Project geologists conduct exploration and preliminary development projects both within and outside the Morenci district and provide support to ore reserve block modeling and geotechnical work performed by the Morenci mine engineering group. Hydrogeologists handle exploration for and development of groundwater resources and groundwater flow modeling, mine dump leach solution penetration and recovery evaluation, and tailing dam water reclamation.

The article presents the concept of the application of the Finite Element Method (FEM) and ABAQUS software in the global monitoring of changes in the rock mass and on the surface of the area, as a result of backfilling the workings. Waste materials applied for stabilizing old mining workings can have a strong influence on the rock mass and surface. According to the regulations, this process should be carefully monitored, especially in terms of the safety of surface structures and rock mass stability. The article presents the concept of an analytic and graphic presentation of the results of the measurements of old workings, applying the Finite Element Method and ABAQUS software in model studies. The main purpose of such interpretation of the geodetic observations results is the application of methods providing wide possibilities to present the geometry of workings, their changes and the influence of the rock mass and surface.

Three water-spray ventilation systems were tested to determine their effectiveness in diluting methane at a room and pillar coal mine face. These systems were: the shrouded nozzle, the spray fan, and the conventional nozzle system that is normally supplied with continuous miners. The testing was carried out in two stages. The air-moving capacities of the nozzles were first evaluated in a duct. The duct tests showed that: (1) the volume of air moved by the nozzle is controlled by the type of nozzle, the space around it, and its location relative to the duct wall; (2) the spray fan nozzles or the shrouded nozzles are both capable of moving air quantities up to 6400 cfm (3.02 m3/s); and (3) when the shroud was removed from around the shrouded nozzle, its bare nozzle moved between 9 and 65 percent more air. In the second stage of testing, a full-scale evaluation of the three systems was conducted. The three spray systems were mounted on a continuous miner which was positioned in an aboveground simulated mine entry. The simulated face tests gave the following results: (1) the standard nozzle system, which is mounted on the front end of the miner, is inadequate for diluting methane; (2) under the best testing conditions (lowest methane emission rate, highest primary ventilation airflow, and closest brattice set back), the slight improvement given by either the shrouded system or the spray fan is the same; and (3) under the worst testing conditions (highest methane emission rate, least primary ventilation airflow, and farthest brattice set back), the spray fan gave superior performance.

INTRODUCTION The planning process for projects requiring construction of tunnels in urban environments can be highly complex and involves interaction with professionals of many disciplines. Typically the initial step in the planning process is to establish basic design criteria for the tunnel or tunnel system consistent with its intended purpose. Such criteria might include acceptable tunnel geometry, minimum and maximum slope or other associated criteria. Ideally, once the basic criteria have been established, the next step in the process might include establishing technically feasible horizontal and vertical alignment and shaft siting alternatives and developing "ball park" construction and operational cost estimates for the alternatives. Comparisons can then be made regarding the relative technical and economic merits of the alternatives and the most favorable alignment(s) are selected for further study or preliminary design. Typically the last and perhaps the most important task that is conducted during the planning stage includes identifying issues and potential problems to be addressed during the design and construction stages of the project. Many issues warrant consideration during the planning phase of a tunneling project. For the purposes of this paper, these issues can be divided into two broad categories: technical and non-technical. Important technical issues include, among others, general design criteria, geotechnical and geoenvironmental issues, and constructibility issues. Important non-technical issues include, among others, right-of-way and easement related considerations, project scheduling constraints, both short and long term environmental impacts and overall cost/benefit aspects of the project. With respect to influence on the planning process, these two groups of issues often cannot be separated completely. ABOUT BENTONITE TUNNELLING Much has been written and many learned papers given on this subject whose generic term is Slurry Tunnelling. This paper is about the particular form of slurry tunnelling known as the Bentonite Tunnelling System. This method. of tunnelling was invented by J.V. Bartlett of consulting engineers, Mott Hay and Anderson in 1964. The general principles are incorporated in British Patent No. 1083322. It was not until the early 1970's that serious experimental work was started to prove the technical feasibility of the process. In the U.K. in 1971 Edmund Nuttall Limited started on an experimental length of 3.8m diameter tunnel at New Cross in London. In Germany at about the same time Wayss and Freytag were starting on a 3.7m diameter collector sewer tunnel in Hamburg. In Japan early slurry tunnelling work was carried out in the 1960's. In the early 1970's a large number of slurry tunnels of various diameters were carried out in that country. This paper is being presented at a time when this system of tunnelling has become an accepted method throughout the developed world. As a result of the work carried out so far there is now a large amount of data existing regarding the effects on the ground in the immediate area of the tunnel, settlement at the surface and the ability of the system to cope with ground varying from clays to coarse gravels and containing large erratics such as granite boulders. The Tertiary carbonate aquifer of central Florida is composed of about 2/3 calcite and 1/3 dolomite with minor amounts of quartz and apatite. The Mg content of the calcite is lower in the recharge areas than in the deeper confined parts of the aquifer system. Various geochemical lines of evidence indicate that much of the dolomite is of penecontemporaneous origin but that some may have been formed much later, possibly by ground water. Theoretical studies indicate that the Mg/Ca ratio in solutions is about unity for the three-phase equilibrium, calcite-dolomite-water. Solutions, such as ocean water and some subsurface brines, have Mg/Ca ratios higher than one and should represent dolomitizing solutions. In the areas of principal recharge to the Floridan aquifer, ground water is undersaturated with respect to both calcite and dolomite, and the Mg/Ca ratiois as low as 0.05. As the water moves downgradient, the Mg/Ca ratio systematically increases and approaches unity; saturation of the solution with respect to both calcite and dolomite also increases with length of travel in the system. Thus, in the zone of active potable-water circulation, the chemical process is one of dissolution of minerals until saturation is reached or exceeded. However, in the deeper brackish-water zones that underlie peninsular Florida, dolomite may be forming where the Mg/Ca ratio is greater than one. The necessary Mg may be derived from ocean water or brines recycled through the system as the hydrologic regimen is changed. The driving force may be simple mixing, relative fluctuations of sea level, or a combination of mechanisms.

Natural cold seepages are characterized as rapid upward transports of methane from deeper parts of geological structures to the seafloor. Thermogenic and/or biogenic methane generated in deep sediments moves up to seafloor, and major part of methane is consumed in anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and hydrogen sulfide is created in anaerobic sulfate reduction by consortium of microorganisms. Then the hydrogen sulfide is utilized by chemosynthetic communities near the seafloor, such as Acharax, Calyptogena, Bathymodiolus, and the mat-forming bacteria Beggiatoa (Fig. 1). When the supply of methane is large or rapid, remaining methane escapes from seafloor, and it is aerobically oxidized in seawater. A mass balance ecosystem model of chemosynthetic community around natural cold seepages in sediment layer and on seafloor has been created and improved by the authors (Yamazaki et al., 2005; Takeuchi et al., 2007). The model is constructed from 3 main processes as schematically shown in Fig. 2: (1) Methane supply process; (2) Ecosystem process; (3) Water column process. The part of chemosynthetic communities is in the ecosystem process. A numerical model CANDI (Carbon And Nutrient Diagenesis) was developed by Boudreau (1996) to simulate the biogeochemical processes such as organic matter, oxidant, nutrient, bi-product, and pH diagenesis in aquatic surface sediments. Then, the improved version named C. CANDI was developed (Luff and Wallmann, 2003; Luff et al., 2004). The authors created the same type carbon and nutrient diagenesis process model with calcium carbonate formation like C. CANDI (Yamazaki et al., 2005), and have added the sulfur oxidizing and immobilization processes (Takeuchi et al., 2007). The sulfur oxidizing and immobilization processes are connected with the carbon and nutrient diagenesis process model.

About 200 M tons of coal were imported into Japan in 2007 and Indonesia was its second largest exporter, accounting for about 30 M tons (12% of the total imported coal). Indonesia produced about 200 M tons of coal, about 75% of which was exported in 2007. As the Indonesian government has decided on an energy policy wherein 33% of the country?s primary energy demand will be met by coal by the year 2025, the domestic demand for coal has increased dramatically in recent years. Over 99% of the coal produced in Indonesia comes from surface mines. However, the conditions of surface mines are worsening each year: the stripping ratio is increasing, approaching the economic ratio, and the infrastructure for coal from inland mining areas is insufficient for such intense mining operations. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. However, mining engineers and/or miners in Indonesia do not have a lot of experiences, expertise and know-how concerning the plans and operations of an underground coal mine. In addition, the industry faces a lot of problems which include poor conditions such as a steep coal seam, groundwater problem, stability of highwall, etc. Under these situations, a mine targeted in this research attempts to develop a new underground mine from an open-cut highwall because the stripping ratio in the surface mining area has almost reached the limitation of economic value. This paper discusses the possible development of a new underground coal mine from an open-cut highwall by means of field observation and numerical analysis.

A two-step flotation scheme was employed to beneficiate a low-grade, cherty-calcareous rock phosphate ore from the Jhabua district, Madhya Pradesh, India. In the first stage, apatite and calcite ire floated together to remove silica, and, in the second stage, calcite is floated and apatite is depressed. The reagent scheme consists of sodium oleate, sodium silicate, orthophosphoric acid and sulfuric acid. The effect of reagent dosages on the efficiencies of separtition in each stage was studied systematically. A flowsheet was proposed for the processing of a low-grade phosphate ore containing 12.5% P2O5, 26.5% SiO2 and a CaO/P2O5 ratio of 2.64 (=32% calcite). The proposed flowsheet would produce a composite phosphate concentrate containing 27.2% P2O5, 6.37% SiO2 and a much reduced CaO/P205 ratio of 1.66. The total P2O5 recovery for the composite concentrate would be 73% .
