Rössing Uranium Limited has operated since 1976 a large open pit uranium mine and extraction plant at a remote site in the Namib desert, South West Africa/Namibia. The geology (Berning, I., et al. Economy Geology) and the technical aspects concerning mining, grade control and metallurgy have previously been described (Rössing Uranium, Mining Magazin and Whyllie, R.J.M. "Rössing Uranium reaches rated production", World Mining). The improvement of leach 'extraction has been reported in 1984 (Kesler, S.B. et. al. "Uranium extraction at Rössing") and the installation of a central process control system has been described (Kesler, S.B. et al. "The introduction of a central process system at Rössing"). At the beginning of 1983 a decision was made to develop a computer system for metallurgical plant optimisation which included mass and volumetric balances, analytical assays for up to 5 chemical elements and the costs for the major consumables. Within 10 months this computer system was developed and implemented. A large number of test runs were made and computer studies were undertaken. The metallurgical division now has a scientific tool for production; planning for actual comparison with plant results and for strategic investigations and decision making.

South Africa has adopted its own code for public reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves in 2000. The South African Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code or Code) (SAIMM 2000) is presented here in its local and global context. The main aspects of the Code are listed and elaborated upon. The Code has been written with the participation of the major South African stakeholders in the field including Government institutions, the legal confraternity and the mining industry. The Code is modelled on, and is 90% compliant with, the Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) (AusIMM 1999). The paper also elaborates on the duties and responsibilities of Competent Persons signing off resource and reserve reports and on the listing requirements of the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE), formerly the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, which has officially adopted the Code. The listing requirements were updated in 2000 to incorporate the SAMREC Code and subsequently in 2002, effective 2003. The ongoing obligations of the JSE for the exploration and mining companies are being compiled and are expected to be effective from early 2004.

In late 1993, Inco Ltd. completed a $600-million environmental improvement project at its Sudbury, Ontario operations -the largest single environmental project ever undertaken by a Canadian corporation. Efficient new facilities and innovative technologies installed during the course of the project have also significantly improved Inco's productivity and competitiveness. In early May 1994, a panel of 18 Inco authors contributed to a Technical Forum, "Environmental Programs at Sudbury," presented at the 96th Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) in Toronto. Their papers have been published in CIM's Toronto `94 Proceedings Volume, pp. 62-77. The following report draws primarily on discussions of Inco's milling and smelting operations published in the Proceedings Volume. The Proceedings Volume also includes papers on the acid and oxygen plants and on engineering, construction and commissioning of the project. Tunnelling with hydraulic drills has been a success in Norway. In the fall of 1976 excavation of tunnels for the development of the Aabjoera scheme was started. Two and a half years later a total of 25 kilometers of tunnels are completed. During the most busy period 5 rigs with hydraulic drills were in operation. GENERAL INFORMATION. Aabjoera Hydro Electric Plant is located in the central part of Norway (Fig. 1). The scheme covers a mountaineous area between the Tosen Fiord and the valley of Namdalen. Water from the area of precipitation is transferred through 5 tunnels to the main reservoir. From here the water is conducted via a 10 km long, unlined supply tunnel down to the Kolsvik power station. The power station is situated underground with a short tailrace tunnel out in the fiord. Average head of water is 507 m. The Aabjoera plant is jointly owned by Helgeland Kraftlag A/S, 8650 Mosjøen and Nord-Trøndelag Elektrisitetsverk, 7700 Steinkjer. The Civil Engineering Division of the latter company has acted as Consulting Engineers for the scheme. General contractors for the whole scheme has been Ing. F. Selmer A/S, Box 6035, Etterstad, Oslo 6.

Changes in the thermal-oxidation behavior and other properties of gold-bearing waste activated carbon when milled in both a ball mill and a vibratory mill were investigated. It was found that significant changes occurred in the oxidation temperature of the vibration-milled waste carbon as a result of increases in surface area and mechano-chemical activation. The mechano-chemical action brought about modifications in the crystal structure of the waste carbon. As a result, the vibration-milled sample was completely oxidized at a temperature of 450°C. Thus, the study established that vibration milling is a better way of lowering the temperature of oxidation of the waste carbon. Furthermore, the gold was found to be concentrated in the ash and, when leached with cyanide for 20 hrs, the gold recoveries from a sample having a head grade of 2 kg/t was 99.5% for the vibration-milled sample and 82% for the ball-milled sample. The lower gold recovery for the ball-milled sample was attributed to sintering of the ash, which was caused by the higher temperature required for its oxidation.

The name is derived from an Egyptian myth, "A beautiful lone bird which lived in the Arabian desert for 500 or 600 years and then consumed itself in fire, rising renewed from the ashes to start another long life." HISTORY This account of the first history is gleaned from old reports and documents which are listed in the Bibliography and from discussions with old-timers of the district. Prospectors were active in the vicinity of Greenwood in 189 1, and in that year staked the Mother Lode, Crown Silver, and Sunset. Henry White staked the Knob Hill claim in Phoenix on Jul. 15, 1891, and by the end of the year, other prospectors had staked most of the claims covering the valuable ore bodies in the camp. Much surface work done in the early years indicated that the values in copper, gold, and silver were low. Large capital investments were required to develop the ore bodies and build smelters. The discovery that the ore was practically self-fluxing greatly enhanced the value of the deposits. A map of the area showing the geology is given in Fig. 1. The bedded Brooklyn conglomerate is shown in Fig. 2.

1. Introduction The new Cleuson-Dixence development project in the Valais region of the Swiss Alps, involves the construction of a new link between the Grande-Dixence dam (still world recordholder with a height of 300 m) and a power house on the banks of the Rhone consisting of approximately 20 km tunnels and shafts, and involving a fall of about 1900 m. This 1200 MW project will replace an existing 900 MW structure built in the 1960s, no longer considered efficient. The new project comprises a head race drift about 15.8 km long, a surge tank, an inclined cascade shaft 4,2 km long, and an underground power station. The work for lots C and D (head race drift from Tortin to Tracouet, surge tank, six adits ans the complete inclined shaft) was awarded to our group (Prader, Locher, SELL, Losinger, Evéquoz, Dénériaz, Imboden and Bouygues). The geological conditions are: Lower part of the shaft (300 m) : sedimentary - sandstone and soft tertiary sandstone. Computer applications in mine 'production' planning and control are concerned with the here and now. In production planning and control we are dealing with tactics as opposed to strategy. Our objective is to make the best of the situation in the short term, i.e., in a relatively fixed environment with relatively fixed plant, equipment, and labor. Environmental factors include not only the geology of the deposit but also market factors (such as price) and governmental constraints and regulations. Mine production planning systems are applied at the interface between concept and execution. Mine production control systems are applied at the interface between execution and revised operating practices or a revised concept. Fig. 1 shows the information flow that takes place regardless of whether the planning and control systems are manual or automatic. The feedback that results depends on the feedback mechanism that has been established, and this feedback can be enhanced by careful systems analysis and design. Chronologically, production planning and control activities support the last in the series of line functions that are ordinarily performed by mining companies. The first of these is exploration, the second is evaluation and development, and the third and final function is production.

INTRODUCTION Phase I of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project, known as MOS-1 (Minimum Operable Segment-1), is the first phase of the 27 km± (17 mi) subway starter line. MOS-1 is currently under construction and involves approximately 6.4 km (4.4 mi) of subway, five stations, yards and shops routed through the downtown area of Los Angeles. The project will form the initial heavy rail backbone of a more extensive light and heavy rail transit system planned for the greater Los Angeles area in the future. Construction Contract A-171 is one of 4 tunnel contracts within MOS-1 and involves construction of twin tunnels running from the downtown metropolitan area west to MacArthur Park. The heavily populated and developed downtown area, potentially gassy ground conditions, and the possibility of undocumented abandoned oil wells in seismically active southern California made the design and construction of Contract A-171 a uniquely interesting project. This paper summarizes the construction history to date (December, 1988) including design geotechnical considerations, tunnel support design, as-built geologic conditions, shield tunneling performance through soft ground, and ground response. INTRODUCTION Boliden Mineral AB currently mines sulfide ores in 18 mines and processes them in eight concentrators. Most ores are typically complex. Gold consti¬tutes a considerable part of the value of the ore reserves. The value of total production in 1984, distributed by different metals is shown in the pie chart below. Traditionally, gold has been recovered as a byproduct, or coproduct, along with silver in floated copper and lead concen¬trates. Gold-price trends over the past decade have prompted comprehensive efforts by Boliden to increase the recovery of gold in concentration processes. Gravimetric recovery of gold in the grinding circuit is one method that has led to quick results. This method supplements tradi¬tional recovery processes based on flotation. The development of a feasible circuit, and the results obtained by its application in the central concentrator at Boliden, in the northern Swedish province of Västerbotten, are reported below. GOLD MINERALOGY IN BOLIDEN ORES The gold content in Boliden Mineral's ores is primarily in the form of alloys with the elements silver and mercury. A minor quantity appears in an unalloyed form.

A combined physical/biochemical process for the precombustion removal of 13 inorganic hazardous air pollutant (HAP) precursors, i.e., Sb, As, Be, Cd, Cr, Cl, Co, F, Pb, Hg, Mn, Ni and Se, from coal was tested. Biochemical processes for removal of HAP precursors from coal potentially offer advantages of deeper cleaning, more specificity and less coal loss. The slurry column is a second-generation process for the beneficiation o f fine (60-mesh x µm coal by a combination of physical separation of mineral matter and biooxidation of pyrite. Sixty-seven percent removal of pyrite from a 60-mesh Pittsburgh #8 coal was achieved at a 35% (w/w) slurry concentration and a five-day reactor residence time. Ninety percent of the heating value of the feed coal was recovered. Among the HAP precursors of most concern, over half of the Se, As and Hg were removed from the feed coal. From 40% to 70% of most HAP precursors were removed from the feed coal. Hg in the feed coal was reduced from 0.12 to 0.054 ,µg/g in the product coal, while waste coal contained 0.24 µg/g.

Kaolin, normally an inert filler when compounded with polymers, is converted into a strongly reinforcing pigment by prereaction with certain functional silanes. Modification of kaolin with amino and mercaptosilanes allows it to form crosslinks and confers significant improvements in modulus, abrasion resistance, compression set and other physical properties of a broad range of polymers.

Salicylaldehyde, a chelating agent for tin, has been found to function as a collector for the flotation of cassiterite. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance studies clearly show that salicylaldehyde can form a chelate compound in bulk and at the surface. Results are also given for the flotation of a tin ore with this reagent.

This paper presents a dynamic model for column flotation. The model equations are normalized and the dimensionless groups that are directly responsible in determining the column flotation behavior are identified. The resulting model equations are incorporated for computer simulation. Numerical results from computer simulations are analyzed to gather information about design and operation of column flotation devices.
