The effectiveness of the new DuPont Passivation Technology in eliminating acid generation from iron sulfides is presented. Passivation is achieved by treatment with a dilute basic perman­ganate solution. This treatment produces a thin impervious layer of iron/manganese oxide on the sulfide surface, providing a bar­rier to the environment so that the sulfide is not available for undesirable reactions such as the production of acid.

This paper is of conceptual nature. The authors present their idea of creating an integrated and intelligent excavation design system. Research work has just been started and the results will be addressed during presentation of this paper. The authors are currently engaged in a pilot study and expect to build a feasibility prototype expert system (establishing the numerical-cognitive coupling in excavation design) by the end of this year.

Owned and managed by industry, it coordinates research that answers questions defined by the sponsoring companies of the projects. Now over 35 years old, the Association is an excellent example of what can be achieved through collaborative research and an industry - backed research organisation.

Modeling uranium mine radiation control methods and natural environmental radon variations is an extremely complex endeavor. A number of authors have examined particular facets of the problem and have proposed models for their area of interest. Bureau of Mines personnel brought together many of these individual studies, and from them have attempted to develop a coordinated plan for modeling radon daughter concentrations in the uranium mine environment. This approach is described.

The authors benchmarked the integrated finite-volume code MULTIFLO against the analytical solution of Philip et al. (1989) for cylindrical underground openings. They found that the numerical simulation of dripping threshold flux was consistently higher than the analytical solution for rectangular and unstructured grids. The magnitude of this error was proportional to the alpha parameter characterizing capillarity. This error may bias estimates of seepage into drifts for repository performance towards nonconservatism.

At the El Realito project, Sonora, Mexico, the Luz del Oro joint venture has recently inferred a geologic resource of 400 to 800 kt of 2.5 glt gold potentially present in gossans, breccias, and veins. El Realito, under investigation for a dump leach, open pit operation, is located in the Sun Antonio Mining District where gold and silver veins and gold placers have been exploited since Spanish colonial times.

The construction involved in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Contract No. lK0011 (K-1), encompassed some 2,621 meters of single track parallel tube rapid transit tunnels, 335 meters of cut-cover subway station and appurtenant ventilation structures at each end, and a fan shaft at approximately the mid point of the tunnels. The construction contract was awarded June 7, 1974 to a Joint Venture consisting of Intercounty Construction Corporation, Hyattsville, Maryland, and S $ M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio. The former being responsible for performing the cut and cover construction, and the latter being charged with constructing the running tunnels and fan shaft at their mid point. (See Fig. 1) The problems of mining and supporting, the 183 meters of twin tunnels just east of Court House Square Station, by unique mixed face and soft ground mining methods is the main subject of this report, although a general review of the tunnels in their entirety, as well as the geology encountered in the excavations, is presented to give a better overall setting for the problems encountered. The 1997 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas, NV. The RETC is a biennial event jointly sponsored by SME and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Conference attendance was 573 members, nonmembers and students, an increase of seven attendees from the 1995 conference in San Francisco, CA. Exhibitors occupied 51 booths at the Las Vegas RETC. The 1997 conference encompassed 58 presentations in 15 sessions. Participants were given details on achievements and advances that have resulted in new design solutions, alternative work practices and increased productivity within the industry. The page at the end of this article tells how to get your copy of the RETC proceedings, either hardbound or on CD-ROM. Or, if you wish, for the first time a CD-ROM is available with the complete RETC proceedings from 1972 to 1997. This two-disk, archival volume has key-word search capability, is in portable file format and is compatible with PC and Macintosh platforms. RETC program sessions included design and planning, ground support, tunnel boring machine (TBM) case histories, conventional excavation, new technology, difficult ground, geotechnical, shafts and raises, future/special projects, new Austrian tunneling method, international projects, soft ground case histories and water and gas. Improvements in flotation technology are continually being made in the attempt to achieve the mineral processor's goal of maximum mineral concentrate grade and recovery at zero cost. Technology that cannot be totally proven in the laboratory must be tested under plant conditions either in a pilot plant or in the existing circuit. Problems associated with new technology can be solved effectively by the mineral processor who approaches each of the problems objectively.

AMAX Coal Company has constructed the first commercial demonstration sub-bituminous coal dryer at its Belle Ayr Mine south of Gillette, Wyoming. This 215 ton per hour facility is projected to produce 165 tons per hour of dried coal at 10 percent moisture and 10,800 Btulpound (6,000 KCIkg). Approximately 43 tons per hour of water will be removed from the coal and seven tons per hour of coal burned as fuel.

Fire detection capability in conveyor belt entries of coal mines has advanced considerably since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. The advances in instrument technology and computer based monitoring have provided better fire detection than ever introduced in the industry. This paper discusses recent belt conveyor fires and detections in mines utilizing CO Monitoring Systems. Data from investigative reports is presented on belt entry fires from 1991 to the present.

A quantitative estimation of the size distribution of rock fragments is extremely important in mining, metallurgy and other geotechnical fields. This paper presents a new approach to the analysis of fragmentation. The method combines the practicality of digital image processing of the rock surface with the theoretical volume calculations based on the principles and laws of fractal geometry. The final volumetric distribution curve is compared with the results from traditional sieving indicating close agreement.

Comminution circuits in general account for fifty percent of capital and operating costs for a processing plant. Significant advances have been made in optimization of these circuits. One would expect a few circuits to be the favored designs for plants. Review of grinding circuits worldwide indicates that a variety of circuit designs are utilized for non-technical reasons. A brief review of circuits and reasons for their selection is given in this paper.

The occurence of primary stratiform and vein gold deposits in the Precambrian rocks of Northeastern Brazil is discussed. The stratiform deposits are related to clastic sediments (quartzites and conglomerates). The veins are associated with quartz and sulfides and are structurally controlled by shear zones. The gold was recovered for a long time by small miners. Developmental programmes for large scale mining are now envisaged. The recovery problems and gold economics are also discussed.

One-half of the $607 million Conveyance construction portion of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's Water Pollution Abatement Program is completed or under contract. 12,200 m (7.5 miles) of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven rock tunnel from 2.5 m (8.0 ft) to 9.9 m (32.3 ft) diameter has been completed. This paper presents a review of TBM performance and a discussion of the pertinent geological conditions of the area.

Kidston's 14 000 t/d mine and mill complex in Queensland, Australia, started operation in January 1985. During its first 18 months of operation, the mine produced over 7000 kg (225,000 oz) of gold, making it the largest gold producer in Australia. This paper describes the planning, logistics, flowsheet, and process for the Kidston project, and some of the problems encountered during startup and the measures taken to correct these problems.

Closure of the Grey Eagle Mine tailings impoundment is an example of closing a "wet" tailings impoundment at the cessation of milling operations. This paper presents a summary of tailings cover design and construction, tailings deposition sequences to facilitate closure, construction schedules, costs, and post-closure monitoring. Permit requirements which influenced the design and construction of the tailings are summarized. The performance of the cover and post-closure monitoring issues are also discussed.
