It was previously reported that dolomite samples from different locations showed varying flocculation behavior with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). In this study, a Florida dolomite sample was examined, and it was determined that palygorskite associated with dolomite was responsible for its flocculation with PEO. A detailed characterization of dolomite samples from different locations was made by electrokinetic, XRD and FT-IR analyses, and the relevance of these characteristics to flocculation with PEO is discussed.

In general, process control systems in solid-solid separation have not evolved to the same level as in flotation circuit control. Perhaps one of the more significant contributing factors in this regard is the lack of suitable on-line analytical instrumentation. In spite of the obstacles, some interesting work has been done. This paper presents a review of current industrial control strategies in ore sorting, dense media separation, gravity separation and electrical and magnetic separation.

Ashanti Goldfields Company (AGC) is the largest gold mining company in Western Africa. Their jewel operation is a highly inte­grated set of mines and plants situated in Obuasi, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. This operation is responsible for mining 5.5 mil­lion tonnes of ore at 4.6 git annually from a series of open pits and underground mines. The sulphide ore is highly refractory with untreated gold recoveries in the range of 30-40%. The milling facilities are quite varied and include an oxide treatment plant (OTP), a heap leach, a sulphide roaster circuit (PTP), a tailings treahnent plant (TIP) and the most recent, a sulphide treatment plant (STP). The sulphide treatment plant, the world's largest stirred tank biooxidation circuit, was commissioned in early 1994. This plant treats approximately 800 tonnes of refractory gold con­centrate per day with overall recoveries of75-85o/o(ll, Biooxidation was selected for its ease of operation and less exotic maintenance requirements as well as its ability to achieve comparable gold recoveries. Unfortunately, despite stirred tank biooxidation being one of the lower cost methods of treating refractory ores, it is still too costly for low grade refractory materials. GeoBiotics, Inc. has developed a proprietary technology that allows the economic treatment of lower grade refractory gold ores through heap biooxidation. AGC has a significant resource of low grade refractory sulphide ore. This ore is too low grade to warrant BIOX™ sulphide treatment and its oxide plant recov­ery is low at 35-45%. GeoBiotics and AGC have completed pre­liminary testing and economic analysis of heap biooxidation for this material. Additionally, the feasibility of producing a gravity concentrate from the tailings of the sulphide treatment plant has been explored. This concentrate would be coated onto the low grade sulphide and biooxidized concurrently. Gold recoveries for the biooxidized low grade sulphide have increased to 75% and the gravity recovery from the STP tailings has achieved 80% uti­lizing a Falcon concentrator. The preliminary economics of the proposed full scale plant are very favourable with a pre-tax IRR of 233% and a payback period of 6 months. This paper details the biooxidation testing, flow sheet devel­opment and preliminary economics of employing heap biooxi­dation for low grade refractory ore treatment at Ashanti Goldfields' Obuasi operation.

INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott's exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine's three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. The thiosulfate, effects copper of concentrations of and ammonia ou the extractlon of gold from sulfide gold concentrate have been studied. The experimental results showed that it is possible to reduce thiosulfate concentration. Above 95% of gold extraction was obtained in O. 2M thiosulfate leaching solution in two hours under the suitable conditions. Therefore, the process of washing residue was simplified, the consumption of thiosulfate and the loss of thiosulfate carried were reduced. by washing residued.

For more than 35 years Lurgi has been providing its fluid bed roasters on a world­wide basis. The current total annual capaci­ty of the 250 Lurgi roasters approaches 26 million mt of sulphide minerals, including gold-bearing flotation pyrite concentrates. While the stationary fluid bed has been uti­lized for roasting exclusively, Lurgi has now commercially introduced its Circulating Fluid Bed (CFB) technology for gold roasting in a successful effort to maximize gold re­covery.

Gold Fields installed what was the mining industry's first commercial gold electrowinning/replate circuit at Ortiz in 1981. Its highly successful operation since that time provided the design basis for a similar circuit at Mesquite, which was started in early 1986. These circuits produce plated gold foil suitable for direct shipment to a refinery or melting directly into bars. Detailed descriptions of the electro- winning and replate circuits are given and advantages and disadvantages are discussed.

In this work, a sample (of about 100kg) of an ore considered as smectitic, not yet industrialized, from Lages-SC-Brazil, was tested for evaluation of its industrial applications. First, we characterize them by XRD, DTA, FRX, and CEC analysis. After this, the smectitic clay was changed to sodium form by treatment with sodium carbonate. Then, the homoionic sodium clay was tested for iron ore pelletizing agent, as binder of foundry sands, and drilling mud with good results.

Sixty-five simulation exercises were developed for teaching and testing problem solving and decision making skills to miners and mining engineers. The exercises focused on judgment and decision making for preventing and controlling mine emergencies. The structure and field testing of the exercises are described, and sample frames of individual exercises are presented. Empirical data are summarized about the effectiveness of these simulations based on the performance scores of a national sample of miners and mining engineers.

The effects of harmonic resonance between the supply impedance and power factor correction capacitors on systems with large harmonic sources, such as mine winders, are well known. The similar effects of resonance with cable capacitance are not commonly encountered and, hence, are not always considered in the design of medium-voltage networks. This article considers some of the aspects of resonance between the supply impedance and the cable capacitance and presents one successful approach to solving the problem.

The Department of Energy is presently sponsoring the development of automated miner-bolter machines in an effort to increase production and productivity in the continuous room-and-pillar mining sections. This study is concerned with the production potential of these machines in three different mine layouts. The Underground Material Handling Simulation (UGMHS) computer model was utilized in the study. The effect of variables such as bolt installation delay, shuttle car capacity, and equipment availability on production are analyzed.

Jurist, educator and historian Neil Reynolds will be the keynote speaker at the National Mining Hall of Fame's 11th annual induction banquet on Sunday, Oct. 11,1998 at the Pointe Hilton Resort in Phoenix, AZ. Reynolds is Municipal Court Judge for the City of Leadville, CO, home of the National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum, and a fifth-generation resident of the community. His family staked mining claims on nearby Mount Massive in 1862. Judge Reynolds is a fulltime faculty member at Colorado Mountain College, Chairman of the Lake County Historic Preservation Advisory Board and practices law in Leadville. In announcing the speaker, Board Chairman Richard Moolick said seven inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame will join 138 mining greats previously honored in the annual ceremonies. This year's inductees will be enshrined by Thomas Falkie, president and chief executive officer of Berwind Natural Resources of Philadelphia, PA. Moolick also announced that Jeffrey Clevenger will be the master of ceremonies for the induction banquet. Clevenger is executive vice president of Cyprus Amax Minerals, Englewood, CO and president of Cyprus Climax Metals, Tempe, AZ. Critical components of any Carbon-In-Pulp or Carbon-In-Leach system are the carbon retention screens. One popular design of carbon retention screen is the "NKM" or "Nor-Kai" unit that was developed in South Africa based on units from there and Australia. P.T. Kellan Equatorial Mining (KEM) is an Indonesian incorporated company owned 90% by CRA Limited of Australia and 10% by PT. Harita Jayaraya of Indonesia. The Kelian gold mine first commenced production in January 1992 and has produced in excess of 21 tonne of gold (675,000 oz) in its first 18 months of operation. The operation is a large tonnage low grade deposit that accepts a low gold recovery by industry standards due to the partially refractory nature of the orebody.

The quantities/volumes of extracted coal, waste rock, mine water and methane during a 250 year period of coal mining in the Czech part of the Upper Silesian coal basin are presented. The paper deals also with the impacts of mining on surface including subsidence, methane escape, mining affected landscape and induced seismicity. Except for uranium, recovery of these elements has not been attempted to any significant extent However, such recovery merits attention based upon availability of existing chemical techniques. This paper presents some thoughts on possible techniques together with opportunities for commercial applications.
