PROPERTY AND PRODUCTION: Around 100 Million Tons of Recoverable Coal are available from the approximate 10,000 acres allocated to the mine. Over 1300 acres of surface land holdings extend well beyond the limits required for plant site, storage tracks, water supply reservoir, settling ponds and waste disposal. COAL: Extensive core drilled testing confirmed the early indicated high quality of the #6 Seam Washability data show less than four percent of the' coal seam required removal to provide a superior product for the available market. PREPARATION PANT DESIGN: The limited needs enabled Preparation Plant Design to meet the requirements without inclusion of novel equipment. The simplified needs afforded ample opportunity for considering increased automation where advantage or economy was antioipated. Plant design included protection of opportunity for pre-drying in advance of air cleaning the fine coal and accommodations for addition of Dense Media separating equipment in event warranted or required by future market changes. Protection is also afforded for addition of Raw Coal Storage accommodations in event warranted. Figure I shows the Preparation Plant Flow Sheet.

Geomechanics signifies the science and engineering of soil and rock materials and of rock masses. It is a field of professional practice and research that draws heavily on the elements of soil and rock mechanics. Geomechanics contributes to a number of disciplines: mining engineering, civil engineering, geological engineering, petroleum and natural gas engineering, and engineering geology (including the elements of geohydrology and geophysics). These disciplines are involved in the design and construction of such projects as mines, tunnels, foundations for structures, excavated rock slopes, dams, shafts, boreholes, oil reservoir wells, underground storage facilities for oil and gas, and hazardous waste repositories. Geomechanics allows us to improve both our environment and our quality of life. In the context of this Handbook, the scope of geomechanics is discussed mainly from the point of view of applications to mining engineering. However, the coverage of the subject mate¬rial is so comprehensive that it is relevant to other disciplines as well. Section 10 covers the field of geomechanics in a structured fashion, beginning with the fundamental principles and leading into practical applications in mining engineering. Throughout the treatment of the subject, knowledge of geologic conditions is assumed since this is discussed in other sections of the Handbook. An important feature of this section is a series of practical examples illustrating the various aspects of geomechanics. "Testing was conducted to determine the ability of foam to maintain roof coverage in a simulated longwall mining environment. Approximately 27% of the respirable coal mine dust can be attributed to longwall shield movement. Developing controls for this dust source has been difficult. The application of foam is a possible dust control method for this source. Laboratory testing of two foam agents was conducted to determine their ability of foam to adhere to a simulated longwall face roof surface. Two different foam generation methods were used; compressed air (CA) and blower air (BA). Using a new imaging technology, image processing and analysis utilizing ImageJ software produced quantifiable results of foam roof coverage. For CA foam in 3.3 m/s (3.3 m/s (650 fpm)) ventilation at 3 minutes after application, 98% of agent A was intact, while 95% of agent B was intact on the roof. At 30 minutes after application 94% of agent A was intact while only 20% of agent B remained. For BA in 3.3 m/s (3.3 m/s (650 fpm)) ventilation, the results were dependent upon nozzle type. Three different nozzles were tested. At 30 minutes after application 74-92% of foam agent A remained, while 3-50% of foam agent B remained. CA foam seems to remain intact for longer durations and is easier to apply than BA foam. However, more water drained from the foam when using CA foam which demonstrates that BA foam retains more water at the roof surface. Agent A seemed to be the better performer as far as roof application is concerned. This testing demonstrates that roof application of foam is feasible and is able withstand a typical face ventilation velocity, establishing this technique’s potential for longwall shield dust control. INTRODUCTION NIOSH personnel have visited many longwall operations at various geographical locations in the U.S., conducting benchmark surveys to characterize current operating practices and dust control measures in use. Sources of respirable dust generated from the longwall face have been identified as: intake (10%), stage loader (20%), shields (27%), and shearer (43%) [1]. Dust generated from the shearer, armored face conveyor, and the stage loader can mainly be controlled by water sprays and increases in ventilation air quantities, however, research has demonstrated limited effective controls for dusts generated by shield movements [2]. One possible approach to mitigating shield dust generation is to apply a layer of water or foam to the shield-roof interface. Once this interface is blanketed with foam or water, dust will be less likely to become airborne and contaminate the airways over the personnel walkways. Though water is an abundant and common dust control measure, roof applications have limited success because water is unable to remain in-place in adequate quantities for the necessary duration between application and shield advance. Past and current testing of foam for material properties has shown that it has longer applicability times, ranging from 10 to 60 minutes [3] and has shown better performance for dust control, ranging from 19-96% improved efficiency over water [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. The majority of this foam dust control research has focused on dust control efficiency at the longwall shearer or continuous miner cutting drum."

In the past 100 years in the mining industry, many references are made to the "Widow Makers", 'Miners Con" and many other derogatory names related to physical hazards. They reflect the lack of understanding of the problem facing the early day miner. Workers were enticed, in some cases, to take a chance against a medical question mark that could not be explained by the doctors of those early days. The optimism of the mining man and the challenge of work led him to believe that the physical results could not apply to himself and only applied to some of his fellow workers. Much of the time, to his dismay, he found that he had lost to the game of chance. As medical knowledge improved and mining management began to understand the effects of conditions in the mines and beneficiation plants, steps were taken to alleviate or eliminate the health hazards that were present, The organizations engaged in mining that did not take an active interest in employee health found themselves to eventually be placed in the position of being forced to take action by Federal and State legislation. We find ourselves in the 1970's on the threshold of a new era where the general public is concerned vociferously about "their" environment and the industry feels the governmental controls more strongly than ever before. It can be said that in the past 100 years we have advanced from the "Widow Makers" of the 1870's to the "Retirement Makers" of today. The difficulties of the early days in underground mining were of times compounded in the beneficiation plants above ground. As late as the 1950's some crushing and milling installations in the United States were operating under environmental conditions that complied to the then existing legislation but were below the health level sought by conscientious management. The Mission Concentrator Crushing Plant was designed in 1959 and placed in operation in July, 1961. In 1977, the Bureau of Mines awarded a grant to the State of South Carolina to explore the possibility of using Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data as an aid in monitoring surface mining activities in selected counties of the State. Work had been done in Aiken County prior to the grant by Bureau of Mines and State personnel at the EROS Data Center using both the GE Image 100 and ESL IDIMS systems. The initial work on the 1-100 consisted of locating and measuring the areas of various kaolin mines. The results were excellent on location, identification, and accurate area measurements of several mines as compared with aerial photos of each mine. The effort also included locating and measuring the size of all mines (including sand and gravel) within two U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7 ½ min quadrangle maps. Line printer overlays using the IDIMS equipment and software resulted in the location of all known mines within an estimated error less than ±91.4m (5300 feet). Mine acreage was calculated by counting each symbol (which represented one pixel) and multiplying by 1.1 (the number of acres per pixel). Figure 1 shows a portion of one quadrangle overlay. Table I gives a comparison of acreage measured for sever- al mines from the 1-100 and IDIMS systems vs. aerial photo measurements.

The testing of different kinds of process flow configurations and cell volumes in industrial scale flotation processes is in general difficult to accomplish and even expensive to perform.1 Also the lack of suitable measuring and analyzing devices often prevents effective comparison of results. Nowadays, the existing flotation processes contain, almost with exception, several return loads which result in difficult control of the process. There exist two good reasons for testing different kinds of flotation circuits at the Outokumpu Oy Kotalahti mine. Firstly it is easy to change the process flow configuration without any additional installation work and secondly, the concentrator is highly automated with magnetic flow meters, on-line analyzer and process computers. In this presentation, open circuit flotation is compared with the classical closed circuit flotation which contains return loads. In additional, the effectiveness of computer control in both cases is estimated and also the effect of cell volume on flotation results is examined.

Since 2019, approximately two dozen international battery recycling companies have been operating at the commercial or pilot scale [1]. However, current process capacity does not exceed 100,000 tons of end-of-life (EOL) lithium-ion batteries (LIB) per year, and the current recycling rate is only about 5% in North America [2-3]. Recycling metals from EOL LIBs is not only essential to waste minimization and environmental stewardship, but also a source of critical materials, which can contribute towards supply chain stabilization. LIB recycling can be roughly divided into three categories: direct recycling, pyrometallurgy, and hydrometallurgy. Direct recycling seeks to retain as much of the manufactured effort with minimum chemical processing [4]. The evolution of battery designs and chemical compositions are challenges to this approach [5-6]. Pyrometallurgical processes are robust and flexible allowing a broad spectrum of batteries with minimum pre-processing requirements. Some of the matrix issues are solved through combustion of some constituents. Smelting is strongly tied to fossil energy and air emissions are a concern. In addition, pyrometallurgical processes are not stand alone, as hydrometallurgical refining normally required to separate and recover the metals of interest (Co, Ni, and Cu) from the produced alloy and Li from the slag [7]. Hydrometallurgical processes can be highly selective and efficient in recovering high purity materials [8]. In general, hydrometallurgical processes are considered cleaner and less costly than high temperature processes [4,9-10]. Extensive chemical consumption and waste generation significantly increase the operating costs and overall environmental impact of the hydrometallurgical processes [11]. Leaching of metals from LIBs is dominated by the mixture of sulfuric acid (1 to 4 M H2SO4) and hydrogen peroxide (1 to 15 wt.% H2O2) [10]. Although organic acids have been tested as lower environmental impact alternatives, the reported pulp density operations are low < 60 g/L [10-11]. For the H2SO4/H2O2 leachates, high leaching efficiencies >90% are reported for Co, Ni, Mn, and Li from cathode materials at temperatures over 40 ⁰C and pulp densities between 30 to 200 g/L [9-10]. H2O2 acts as reducing agent to convert Co+3 and Mn+4 into their soluble forms, Co+2 and Mn+2 [12]. Despite the claims of H2O2 being a clean reducing agent [13], production of H2O2 has significant environmental impacts as determined by life-cycle analyses [13-14]. Moreover, the costs and risks associated with H2O2 transportation and storage cannot be ignored [15].

INTRODUCTION Nevada Goldfields began underground mining development at the Kingston Project in September, 1986, followed by mill start-up in March, 1987. The first gold pour in April followed three years of preparatory work in establishing a North American operational base for the production of precious metals by Golconda Minerals N.L., an Australian mining firm. GENERAL CORPORATE BACKGROUND The Golconda Group of companies was established in early 1983 in Australia. It began operations by successfully retreating tailings at several old gold mining sites throughout Australia. With the limited reserves available for tailings retreatment, Golconda began to look toward the future by conducting a gold exploration program in Australia. However, the continued high price of gold in Australia had limited the possibilities of acquiring good properties at a reasonable cost and consideration was given to looking outside Australia in addition to Golconda&apos;s domestic exploration activities. North America was favored because of the proven potential for substantial gold deposits, the established infrastructure which would allow for rapid and cost-effective development of new projects and the advantages of similar political and economic climates. In mid-1984, Golconda established an office in California and began an extensive study of over 100 prospects throughout the United States. Two prospects were identified as a result of this study whch showed merit; one was located at Empire, Colorado and the other at Aurora, Nevada. Negotiations were then successfully undertaken to acquire these two properties. Golconda&apos;s U.S. offices were moved to Reno, Nevada in early 1985 to facilitate management of its projects. To operate and manage these projects, a small Canadian company listed on the Vancouver Stock Exchange, Cannon Minerals, was acquired by Golconda and renamed Nevada Goldfields Corporation. The current structure of the company is shown below in Figure 1. A private placement of 2,575,000 shares of common stock at US54.00 per share was arranged by Jacksons Limited of Australia in association with W.I. Carr (U.K.) Limited of London. This placement resulted in US510.3 million being available in May, 1986 for the acquisition and initial development of the Aurora and Empire projects. While the financing was underway, project planning commenced on both the Aurora and Empire projects. The Aurora project was selected as the one to be initially developed because of its relatively advanced stage of development. The

Rock engineering tasks like tunnelling, dam and building construction, and rock slope stability rely heavily on properly estimating the rock’s uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), a crucial rock geomechanical characteristic. As high-quality specimen are not always possible, scientists often estimate UCS indirectly. The primary objective of this paper is to assess the efficacy of long short-term memory (LSTM), K-nearest neighbour (KNN), a combination of particle swarm optimisation (PSO) with an artificial neural network (ANN), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) to estimate the UCS of sandstones from Jharia, Dhanbad, India. Point load index (PLI), porosity (n), P-wave velocity (Vp), density (ρ), and moisture content (%) are the parameters used for the present study. Finally, a comparison was made between the various prediction algorithms outputs. The findings of the study validated the effectiveness of computational intelligence methods in forecasting UCS compared to other models used in this paper. The KNN achieves overall the best results, with an R2 of 0.95 for training, 0.94 for testing, and an RMSE of 0.03 for training and 0.05 for testing.

Coleman Quartz Inc. has a long history as the sole U.S. producer of lascas for the cultured quartz growing industry based on its unique deposits in Arkansas. Since 1989 the company has also been producing metallurgical grade silica for the ferrosilicon industry from a deposit of unusually pure Arkansas novaculite. This paper chronicles Coleman&apos;s trans-formation of an abandoned railroad ballast quarry into a generator of $1.5 million in annual sales to a nontraditional novaculite market. Potential additional applications for this high quality silica rock will also be mentioned.

"Hard rock mines move large volumes of material, which can cause the conveyors that are essential to this movement to suffer lots of problems, including carryback, spillage, dust and belt wander. Many of these issues are created at the transfer points where the belts are loaded.This article provides an overview of the latest transfer point systems that incorporate safety and serviceability by design as well as a report on recent projects. One project is the Conveyor B Transfer at the Coeur Rochester silver mine near Lovelock, NV. Here, performance was improved with the installation of belt support cradles, engineered chute walls with external wear liner, and a compact dust collector. A second project is the improvement of belt support idlers and skirtboard sealing in a long loading zone of a conveyor under the concentrator at an Arizona copper mine.The importance of transfer pointsConveyors are essential in mine material handling. Their performance will often make the difference in mine productivity and profitability. A key to conveyor performance is the transfer points where the conveyor belt is loaded and discharges. At these transfer points, many of the problems encountered with the conveyor system are created.The problems that arise at the transfer stations include off-center and segregated loading, mistracking, blockages and plugging. And there are a variety of problems originating with fugitive material — cargo released in the form of carryback, spillage or airborne dust — that are created or exacerbated in the transfer points. These fugitive materials turn into other conveyor-related problems, including shortened component life, unplanned outages for conveyor maintenance, unexpectedly high labor costs for maintenance and cleanup, worker health and safety problems and issues with community relations. The main constituent of the feed to the "Sulphide Section" (31 t/h), in the F. Sartori Plant (6000 tid) of the Miniere di Mon)eponi(Sardinia), is the ore of the Campo Pisano -Funtanaperda Mine (1 ? Difficulties have always been experienced in the treatment of this ore, owing to the extramely fine Pyrite-Sphalerite intergrowth and to the high Pyrite and soluble salts contents. The first mentioned difficulty was overcome with a rather complex flowsheet (see fig.1A and lB)(2); the others with a reagent combination that required a pH of 11 in a pulp loaded with soluble salts. This meant high consumption of alkalizer, and also of the other reagents; furthermore the alkalizer had to be mainly NaOH with only minor amounts of lime, because the latter tended to depress not only the pyrite but also the middlings, which were supposed to float. With dialchylditiophosphate alone as a collector, a lower pH could have been used, but a certain amount of amylxanthate was indispensable to promote flotation of the middlings. On the other hand, a bulk-flotation of sphalerite and pyrite at low pH could not be very advantageous on account of the high pyrite content in the feed(3).

The Granduc ore body is located beneath glacial terrain on the borders of British Columbia and Alaska, some 600 miles from Vancouver and 30 miles from Tidewater at Stewart, B. C. The concentrator and attendant facilities are located in wilderness country at an elevation of 2500 feet. The average annual snowfall is 65 feet. Surface facilities and ore body are linked by a 10 mile railroad haulage tunnel. This copper property has been developed by Granduc Operating Company on behalf of Newmont Mining Corporation and American Smelting and Refining Co. First production started in November, 1970. In August, 1966, Granduc Operating Company awarded an engineering and construction management contract to McKee-Swan Wooster, a joint venture of A. G. McKee of Canada and Swan Wooster Engineering Company Limited, to design a concentrator to treat approximately 7000 tons of ore per day. The isolated location of the Granduc ore body indicated comparatively high freight rates on consumable items of concentrator supplies such as reagents, grinding media, etc. A firm flowsheet for the flotation of the Granduc ores having been developed by the Danbury laboratory of Newmont Exploration Limited, attention was devoted to means of reducing operating costs. One obvious method was to reduce or eliminate the costs of steel grinding media by employing some form of autogenous grinding. two pilot plant operations were carried out at the facilities of Lakefield Research of Canada Limited, in which autogenous grinding of Granduc ores was investigated. "INTRODUCTION This past year commodity prices continued their dip with increased volatility causing market values to slide another 16% putting increased pressure on even the largest companies to improve their free cash flow.[1] Without a recovery in commodity prices in sight, companies must find a sustainable method to improve returns in the current economic climate. In an effort to improve plant sustainability, the mineral processing industry is investing in advanced automation technologies and innovative processing methods that are both more reliable and more efficient than ever before. One such breakthrough technology is Heap Leaching (HL). This method of extraction has certain advantages over traditional metallurgical methods making previously unsustainable operations economically feasible. While HL is already seeing use in the gold and copper industries among others, recent developments may allow for the use of HL to process primary sulfide ores which make up about 80% of today’s ores.[2] For this reason, this emerging technology is poised for exciting growth. Unfortunately, as with any process change, the implementation of HL projects requires significant training on both the control system as well as the underlying process, and further, due to the complex nature of the HL process, this can be a particularly difficult task. DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB Even before the implementation of these new technologies, the availability of the skilled workforce has already become a significant problem for the mining and mineral processing industries. From a survey of 912 mining professionals, Stratum International found that a mere 0.4% of senior level candidates were between the ages of 25 and 34 and a similar proportion aged over 75 years.[3] This indicates that there is both a deficiency of young skilled workers and a skilled workforce that is retiring earlier than the previous generation. Combined with data published by the US Department of Labor stating that the median age of the mining workforce is approaching 50 years old, research suggests that up to 50% of skilled mining and mineral process professionals are expected to retire in the next 5 years, leaving with their irreplaceable knowledge and experience.[4] While it is projected that the labor pool will be sufficient to fill open positions, the real question is if this young workforce will have necessary skill sets and experiences. In addition to a rapidly aging workforce and an inexperienced labor pool, a study done by the Oil and Gas Journal showed that it takes about 7 years, on average, for new workers to achieve a level of competency that permits them to assess risks and appropriately make decisions.[5] Not only is this figure is in direct conflict with the typical tenure of 5 years in one position meaning that the thinly spread skilled labor will be required to become senior staff before they are able to achieve competency in their current role, this also means that these millennials are not given the opportunity to become competent in their role before the retirement of the more experienced workforce."

"Hecla Limited is nearing completion of the Lucky Friday Mine No.4 shaft located in Mullan, ID. The shaft is collared at the 4940 level of the mine and will have a final mine level depth of 8620, or 9,590 feet below the surface. After reaching the 7400 mine level the shaft encountered ground deformation higher then allowed for in the design for a circular shaft excavation and concrete lining. This additional ground deformation required portions of the shaft concrete liner to be reinforced with frameless, steel liner plate. To eliminate the installation of the liner plate from the remaining shaft development, the design of the shaft excavation starting at the 7650 mine level was changed to an elliptical cross section based on the overall stress field orientation as well as the orientation of the structure of the host rock surrounding the shaft. The elliptical cross section was instrumented to confirm the shaft excavation and lining was performing as designed. This design change has allowed the shaft to continue to the planned 8620 mine level without the need to install liner plate in the shaft or change the overall functionality of the shaft or the Lucky Friday life of mine plan.INTRODUCTION Hecla’s Lucky Friday Mine is a deep, underground producer of silver, lead and zinc in the Coeur d’Alene mining district of northern Idaho (Figure 1). Primary access into the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk to an original depth of 1,890-m (6,200-ft). Current production is from the Gold Hunter vein system, approximately 1,525-m (5,000-ft) northwest of the Silver Shaft.Lucky Friday’s #4-Shaft is a 5.5-m (18-ft) finished diameter, internal shaft, or winze, being sunk to the north of the Gold Hunter vein system, from the mine’s 4760 level, 1,743-m (5,720-ft) below the surface, to the 8620 level, 2,923-m (9,590-ft) below the surface. The shaft is designed to provide access to the deep, high-grade zones of the Gold Hunter in order to increase the mine’s production and operational life. Design and engineering began in 2006, with construction starting in the fourth quarter of 2009."

Since the beginning of the computing age, technical software packages have not been developed to address only programming specialists but have been dedicated to process engineers. For process analysis, BRGM is developing and commercializing three packages: ? sampling software: ECHANT 2.0 for Windows ? material balance calculation: BILCO 2.0 for Windows ? steady-state simulator for plant design, adaptation and optimization: USIM PAC 2.1 for Windows This paper deals in a first part with the main features of these three packages. In a second part, advanced models are presented for SAG/ AG mills and flotation columns. An industrial case of application is shown for each of them.

"During TBM operations, thrust jacks apply high-concentrated forces to the last installed precast segment. These loads generate a disturbed region in the precast segment under the thrust jacks, in which significant tensile stresses (defined as splitting or bursting stresses) occur perpendicular to the load direction. In addition, due to the demand of compatibility, the combined effect of TBM high-concentrated loads determines tensile spalling stresses in the area far from the loads. Therefore, local rebars or fiber reinforcement are required in these areas. This paper focuses on the study of the effects generated by high-concentrated loads exerted by TBM hydraulic jacks, mainly in terms of both spalling and splitting phenomena. Experimental tests on small-scale specimens showed that polypropylene fiber reinforcement significantly enhances both the bearing capacity and the ductility. Moreover, polypropylene fibers resulted in very effective control of compatibility cracks.INTRODUCTIONTunnel segments are generally reinforced by conventional rebars (RC segments) in order to resist the tensile stresses both at Serviceability (SLS) and Ultimate Limit States (ULS).In the two last decades, Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) has been used in many precast tunnel segments (sometimes also in combination with conventional rebars). Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) is generally used for these applications even though there is a growing industry interest on macro-synthetic fibers for structural applications. Conforti et al. (2015) showed that polypropylene (PP) macro fibers can be used as shear reinforcement in both wide shallow and deep beams. Referring to precast tunnel linings, very few early experiences are reported in literature. Bonalumi et al. (2015) developed full-scale tests on tunnel elements reinforced by PP fiber reinforcement and conventional rebars (hybrid solution). The design process of segmental concrete tunnel linings generally models the standard load cases of demolding, storage, transportation, positioning and embedded ground condition. In all these stages the ring can be modelled as simple curved beam elements (having a height equal to the lining thickness and a width equal to the segment length). During these loading conditions, flexural demand is generally limited; thus, in case of conventional RC elements, a rather low ratio of longitudinal curved rebars is usually adopted (?s of about 0.2-0.3%)."

Semi-autogenous grinding mills play a critical role in the processing stage of many mining operations. They are also one of the most intensive energy consumers of the entire process. Current forecasting techniques of energy consumption base their inferences on feeding ore mineralogical features, SAG dimensions, and operational variables. Experts recognize their capabilities to provide adequate guidelines but also their lack of accuracy when real-time forecasting is desired. As an alternative, we propose the use of real-time operational variables (feed tonnage, bearing pressure, and spindle speed) to forecast the upcoming energy consumption via machine learning and deep learning techniques. Several predictive methods were studied: polynomial regression, k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, multilayer perceptron, long short-term memory, and gated recurrent units. A step-by-step workflow on how to deal with real datasets, and how to find optimum models and final model selection is presented. In particular, recurrent neural networks achieved the best forecasting metrics in the energy consumption prediction task. The workflow has the potential of being extended to any other temporal and multivariate mineral processing datasets.
