Experiments were carried out on 76 mm laboratory heavy medium cyclone treating -2.0 t 0.5 mm coal and on two 600 mm industrial heavy medium cyclones treating coal in the size range -13.0 t 0.5 mm. The variables studied were spigot diameter and feed medium gravity. The generalised distribution curve for the separation of coal in these heavy medium cyclones has been defined by the equation [ ] The specific gravity of separation SG has been found to increase linearly with increase in feed medium, gravity (SGf). The relationship for SG of industrial cyclone is given as 50 SG = -6.801 t 6.463 SGf t 0.0327 Spig 50 -0.02625 SGf. Spig. Further, the probable error for the separation has been found to be linearly related to (SG50 - SGf ) according to the equation [ ] The model equations developed have been used to select appropriate levels of operating conditions to achieve an increase in the yield by about 2 to 4% without affecting the quality of the product.

Graphite usage in the United States during 1994 was fairly strong. The hearty showing of the domestic economy, along with sound performances from the major industries that use graphite, helped make 1994 a solid year for the graphite industry. Supply Virtually all natural graphite is imported into the United States, as there is no domestic production. The primary producers are Brazil, Canada, China, Madagascar, Mexico, Mozambique, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Mozambique is a new producer. It is now supplying a high-carbon, large-crystallite flake in large quantities. Sri Lanka continues to experience problems with one of its two mines, closing operations in December 1994. The synthetic graphite used domestically was produced primarily in the United States as a byproduct of electrode production. Synthetic graphite was also imported from Switzerland for specialized applications. The purified graphites/carbons, such as Desulco and ThermoPURE materials, were also produced domestically. There was a sufficient supply of all types of graphite to meet domestic demand.

Hydrocyclones and other dynamic separators are normally fed with pulps of water and solid particles. The particles have different sizes, shapes and densities and, except in the special case of mono-characteristic particles, are segregated into size, shape and density. Segregation is magnified by the high values of centrifugal acceleration in the hydrocyclones. This paper develops the theory of the segregation, indicates the major variables involved and reports experimental data of segregation under different operating conditions for mixtures of magnetite and/or ferrosilicon and non-magnetic minerals.

The oxidants which participate in the bacterially catalyzed oxidation of minerals are dissolved oxygen and some aqueous iron(III) complexes. Speciation studies indicate that these complexes consist of iron (III) -sulfate and iron (III) -arsenate ions. The complexes have different oxidizing powers as indicated by their calculated standard reduction potentials. The thermodynamics of the oxidations of pyrite and arsenopyrite are related to the mechanisms of the reactions. The mechanisms are discussed in terms of primary processes occurring on the mineral surfaces and the secondary reactions of the primary products. The importance of the conclusions to plant operation is discussed.

It highlights the transition from early metallurgical forecasting methods to a comprehensive model that includes spatial distribution of metallurgical forecasts. This model helps in planning and adapting to the variability in ore characteristics, such as hardness and mineralogy, which affect processing performance.

Mineral processing activities in general reflected the economic ills of 1981 and early 1982, but in some areas the depressed state of the industry resulted in increased activity. As were all aspects of the minerals industry, processing plant operations were severely affected by the recession-prone economy, by sagging prices for primary metal products-copper, molybdenum, nickel, iron, manganese, and especially uranium-and numerous shutdowns and layoffs. Copper production by major producers in Arizona and Utah was severely curtailed; Amax, the major US molybdenum, producer did considerable belt-tightening; and the uranium industry was in a state of disaster. Even the precious metal superstars-gold and silver-were affected, with a steady decline throughout the year in world market prices. Perhaps hardest hit have been newly developed properties, particularly in the uranium industry, and old-line properties where historical development impacts today. No longer can such properties afford the luxuries, for example, of a long haul distance between mine and plant or continued use of antiquated facilities. Surprisingly enough, the very state of the economy has caused increased activity in some sectors of the mineral processing industry. In mill design, although large projects have been tabled, smaller projects have gone on, with innovations in design, often for cost-saving reasons, that will affect future designing approaches. Economic restrictions are impacting on mill flowsheets as researchers look for improvements and better, less expensive techniques. Other unit processes-hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, concentration, materials handling-are impacted by the need for a better, less costly product. Although at the end of the first quarter of 1982, no major environmental legislation had been enacted, rumors persist that there will be a loosening of some of the stricter standards, both in the requirements themselves and in the time allowance for implementation. The year had seen some relaxation in how current legislation and standards are administered. For example, in OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) operations, there has been a shift toward voluntary checking of industry compliance with work rules, rather than emphasis on agency inspections. However, the industry continues to view environmental factors as having major influence on future operations and efforts to design for environmental safety are becoming almost as important as the processes themselves. Throughout the industry there has been a further focussing on project management, recognizing the necessity for tight control of budgets and schedules-and the systems used to effect them. Many modern export terminals are now in construction while others have either been held up or cancelled. Economics and environmental permits have been some of the major problems. Currently under construction are terminals in Newport News, VA; Charleston, SC; and Baltimore, MD. Expansion of existing facilities at Mobile, AL, and New Orleans, LA, is also well under way. A wide variety of systems and components are being used. They include traveling shiploaders, tunnel and bucket wheel reclaim¬ers, stackers and high line trippers, and bottom and side dump-type car dumpers. The design of tailings containment structures relies on well-understood engineering methods being applied consistently. Unfortunately, not all facilities are designed or managed to the same level of competency. To standardize procedures, the Mining Association of Canada (MAC, 1998) prepared a “Guide to Tailings Management.” It recommended review of designs and an assessment of the risks associated with tailings impoundments be implemented during all phases of amine life. This paper describes how the quantitative risk assessment (QRA) process can be used to define risks associated with the design, construction and operation of a tailings management facility. And it discusses how, once the risk tolerability curves (RTC) are defined for a project, they can assist the risk management (RM) process.

"Violent damage to overlying strata can occur above the large mined-out space left by high-intensity longwall mining. For the safe mining under the aquifer and surface water body, it is imperative to investigate the criteria of overburden failure degree due to high-intensity mining. In this paper we present the characteristics of high-intensity longwall mining panels and overburden critical failure. Based on the geological and mining conditions of a high-intensity mining panel, 3D numerical models that consider the maximum horizontal principal stress and minimum horizontal stress and their orientations with the panel advance direction were established by using the 3DEC software. Sizes of the panel reaching the critical failure of the overburden under different mining thicknesses (3.5 m, 6.5 m, 9.5 m, 12.5 m, and 15.5 m) were analyzed. Further, criteria of overburden critical failure were proposed for the high-intensity mining. The coefficient of overburden critical failure (Cf) is the ratio of the strike length (Ls) to the mining depth (H). Through curve fitting analysis, a fitting equation between Cf and mining thickness was obtained. The results showed that overburden failure criterion with high-intensity mining panel is 0.38 = Cf = 0.97 with different thicknesses. Field measurements validated the results from the numerical models.INTRODUCTIONHigh-intensity longwall mining refers to a coal mining method with thick coal seam, large panel width, fast face advance rate, and severe damage to the overburden and surface in China (Guo et al., 2018). Violent movement of the roof rock and severe damage to overlying rock strata occur in the large mined-out space left by a high-intensity longwall mining panel, which is a 3D (three-dimensional) structure layout with highly non-uniform stress distribution. Recognition of such fact a will facilitate this overlying rock strata failure problem investigation (Peng et al., 2019).The studies of overlying strata failure due to longwall coal mining have been reported by some scholars with different methods. Kang et al. (2018) studied the sudden massive roof collapse during longwall coal retreat mining by a large-scale two-dimensional physical model and a UDEC numerical model. Ghabraie et al. (2015) researched the mining-related strata movement by applying the three-dimensional laser scanner, optical transducer, and digital image processing techniques to two-dimensional physical models. Wang et al. (2015) analyzed the structural characteristics and fracture failure process of overlying hard and thick main roof by a 3DEC numerical model; this study also investigated the geostress reduction and permeability enhancement redistribution of the adjacent coal measure strata by FLAC3D. Guo et al. (2012) performed a three-dimensional finite element analysis and shared some insights into the dynamic interaction between mining induced strata stress changes, failures, and gas flow patterns. Meng, Shi, and Li (2016) proposed a 3D coupling model between stress and permeability, investigating the dynamics of a stress, permeability coefficient using FLAC3D. Khanal, Guo, and Adhikary (2019) used the 3D numerical modelling approach (COSFOW) to investigate the strata deformation and the change in permeability in the overburden strata due to the underground extraction. However, few studies considered the influence of the horizontal stress on overburden failure in a high-intensity longwall mining panel, and the critical failure criteria of overlying rock strata is unclear."

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag’s (LKAB) Konsuln iron ore mine, located just south of the famous Kiruna iron ore mine in Malmfälten in northern Sweden inside the Arctic Circle, was developed as a test mine between 2018 and 2020 for the Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM) project [1]. Besides functioning as a test mine, Konsuln also contributes to ore production. The existing mine ventilation system was designed for the current production rate of 0.8 Mtpa using conventional diesel machines. The design was created by Kiruna mine ventilation team, Stina Klemo and Joakim Jonasson, in cooperation with a consultant, Tomas Bolsöy from EOL Vent Mining AB. There is a plan to increase this rate to between 1.8 and 3 Mtpa in the future, and this requires the primary fans to be upgraded. Therefore, a study was carried out to determine whether using ventilation on demand (VOD) could avoid this fan upgrade and reduce Konsuln’s ventilation and heating power costs in the future. The study also investigated whether using battery electric vehicles (BEVs) along with VOD or as a standalone strategy could further reduce these power costs. In addition, the study analyzed the suitability of heating power reduction strategies presently or previously used in Nordic countries and Canada to investigate potential additional strategies to reduce heating power cost, the largest portion of Konsuln’s ventilation and heating power costs.

Beneficiation of-low-grade nonmetalliferous mineral deposits by electronic color sorting is currently undergoing a period of rapid development. For those deposits in which the specific gravity, strength, soundness, electric and magnetic properties of the ore and gangue are similar the possibility of separation by color, reflectivity, or fluorescence offers hope for utilization of much poorer quality ore than previously thought possible. For those ores in which consistency of color is required or for which a dry process is preferred, the electronic color sorter is particularly adaptable. Electronic color sorters were first designed to process agricultural products and were small low-capacity units. However, the recent introduction of larger machines designed to process 6-in, diameter ore at a rate of 30 to 50 tph (Anonymous, 1966a), has brought color sorting into the capacity range required by many mineral producers.

An integrated approach to mine management is presented. A model for achieving the level of control of operations critical to surviving in the current market is outlined. The integrated Production and Cost Management System (PRaCaST) is designed to provide mine managers with a reliable, quantitative, decision-assisting system that can be used in formulating timely responses to complex fluctuations in operations. PRacaST consists of a productivity forecast model, sectional bills of materials containing current resources consumption factors, a linear programming scheduling model, and operations analyses that focus on production and cost performances. The system is applied to an underground coal mine.

Industrial-scale test results indicate superior metallurgical performance of column flotation compared to conventional cell flotation for copper cleaning. A technical comparison of bubble generation systems for column flotation is made. Two types of bubble generation systems are considered: the filter-cloth type spargers and the Turbo-Air® sparger, which utilizes an air-water mixture fed to the column through injection tubes. Examples of the improved technical performance available with an external sparger system are presented using data from plant tests conducted for specific applications with several different mineral ores. INTRODUCTION Column flotation is now a valuable unit operation which mineral processing engineers employ in the design and operation of flotation circuits in nearly all mineral applications. The acceptance of columns in the mid- 1980s by the minerals industry was paralleled by a rigorous approach to developing a scientific understanding of the design, scale- up, and operation of column flotation units (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Since then, column flotation has become a standard unit of the cleaning stage in many new mineral concentrator projects and has replaced older mechanical cells to improve process efficiency. The size of column cells has continued to grow from the initial 0.9- to 2.1 -meter diameter range, and it is not uncommon to find column cells today being 2.7- to 3.6-meters in diameter. With the success of the smaller units, the scale-up to larger cells has been proven and demonstrated by the performance of the large-diameter cells (Murdock and Wyslouzil. 1991). The use of columns in flotation circuits has also been accompanied by developments in modelling. control, and optimization of column performance (Lee et al, 1991). The bubble generation system is the heart of the operation of column flotation cells. The most common methods for generating bubbles can be divided into two types: the internal and external spargers. Internal spargers are typically a porous material, such as sintered glass, porous rubber or filter-cloth, or maybe a single- or multi-nozzle sparger. External spargers implies that a gas and a liquid (either water or slurry) are brought into contact outside the column and that mixture is then introduced into the column. Several types of external spargers are available today, and innovative designs for externally mounted air sparging systems have been a significant factor in the successful application of columns. Subsidence planning and control must be an integral part of mine design in order to minimize the economic impact of underground mining on the surface. Pre-calculation of surface deformations which may cause damage to surface structures must be performed and dam-age criteria must be established, if the response of structures to such movements is to be determined and the extent of damages to be assessed. In this paper the Surface Deformation Prediction System (S.D.P.S.), which can be used to predict accurately the vertical and horizontal parameters of surface movements due to underground mining, is discussed. The Subsidence Response Modeling Program (S.R.M.P.). which can be applied to evaluate the response of buildings to subsidence-induced movements, is also reviewed. Finally, an example is presented demonstrating the applicability of these techniques for subsidence design and control.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted laboratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of dust collector bags for reducing dust liberation and operator exposure from a roof bolter?s dust collection system. The laboratory tests evaluated the bag?s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector?s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing. Laboratory results show that nearly 100 percent of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector?s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Laboratory and field results show that benefits from use of the bags are realized in all areas of operator exposure.

Larger mines spend millions of dollars annually on rock drilling tools, but often purchase based on historic consumption. The results vary from excess inventory to acute tools shortages. These lead to emergency sourcing, sometimes mixing products that don’t perform optimally. Boart Longyear analyzed the usage pattern of 96 thousand drill bits at thirteen different underground mining contracts, showing very high variability. The monthly standard deviation on a product level was 42%, with the highest for development and low volume bits. A new rule of thumb is suggested to carry only one month of safety stock for high volume bits, but increase to three months for low volume bits. This balance will reduce the risk of outages with less inventory. The accuracy can be improved by considering the specific conditions at each mine and reclassifying individual bits for a different safety stock level. Root cause analysis and collaborative forecasting between mines and suppliers can lead to further optimization of availability and inventory levels.

Among the many compositional parameters used to judge the quality of a steam coal is the fouling factor of Attig and Duzy1 [% base in ash % acid in ash X % Na20] in ash. The higher the fouling factor, the more likely the heat transfer surfaces of the boiler will acquire a deleterious deposit of sintered ash. While examining the elemental composition of ash from various size and gravity fractions of coals from Illinois, we noticed that variations in the fouling factor were attributable mostly to variations in the sodium content. Further, sodium content was essentially the same in all sink-float fractions from a given coal. In other words, sodium was related neither to the ash nor to the organic material. We therefore concluded that the sodium was most likely in the pore water, which was approximately a constant proportion of all fractions. This led to the supposition that the sodium might be removable through water extraction. This supposition tended to confirm the observations of Daybell,2 Daybell and Gillham,3 and Gluskoter and Ruch4 that much of the sodium in coals existed as water soluble sodium ions. In passing, it should be noted that most sodium in Western U.S. coals (i.e., Wyoming, North Dakota, Montana) is not water soluble, but rather is fairly strongly held in association with the organic material (ion-exchanged).5 Because data reported in the literature were not very conclusive about the typical proportions of sodium that might be removed by water extraction, and because there were few data indicating extraction rates, and finally, because our calculations showed a favorable economic incentive to lower sodium contents, we initiated an experimental program to investigate water extraction of sodium from Illinois coals.

This has created an environment where constant innovation and change have become standard operating practice. The cornerstones of these efficient operations have been formed using pneumatic backfill, creative shotcreting, specialized equipment, and highly motivated people. The results realized have served to turn interesting properties into productive operations.

The first step in energy conservation in any industrial plant involves implementing many of the day-to-day "house-keeping" items such as fixing leaks, turning out lights, etc. When this step has been accomplished, additional opportunities require a detailed analysis of the energy systems, evaluation of risks and costs, and assignment of priorities. Examples of conservation schemes drawn from the experience of Du pont's Energy Management Consulting Services will be discussed. The utility of heat balances for kilns and dryers in minerals processing will be outlined. The inputs needed from Management for the success of conservation efforts will be discussed.

Mine explosions are one of the most concerning risks related to underground coal mining, as a single gas explosion can cause injuries and fatalities among miners. Underground infrastructure seals and build-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are employed to isolate an area from active workings to mitigate coal mining-related accident risks. They are designed to withstand blast pressures from a possible accidental detonation of the contained gas or a coal dust explosion. Crosscut seals and BIP RAs, typically consisting of steel-reinforced concrete, are prone to strong convergence and have a significant leakage potential due to high convergence damage near mined-out areas. The roof-to-floor convergence can change the structural integrity of these structures, and altered structural integrity can lead to less explosion resistance capability. Hence, a thorough analysis is needed to further understand their explosion response under various strata conditions.

Before we can attempt to answer the question of what can be expected from coal research, let us examine why research is done in other fields and what others expect for the money they spend on research and development. Up to 1900 almost all organized research was carried out at universities. Most of the support came from the university, and by present standards the amount of research was extremely small. The motivation for university research was basically discovery of new phenomena, with the objective of advancing knowledge. Side by, side with this organized effort was that of individual inventors who were primarily responsible for applying this new-found knowledge to useful purposes. During this period inventors were rarely supported by anyone, and experimentation was carried out either in their spare time or at the expense of earning a living. Men like Edison, I believe, were the first to demonstrate on a large scale that one could systematically apply newly discovered scientific principles to inventions that would serve useful purposes and would return a profit to those engaged in the effort. The tremendous expansion in research therefore began with the realization and demonstration that the scientific discovered could be applied in such a way as to return a' handsome profit to those who invested in it. The motivation of many of the research personnel however, remained the satisfaction associated with new discoveries, The money to support their efforts came from those interested in a return on their investments. Since the First World War and a rapidly accelerating rate since the Second World War another important motive for supporting research has appeared--the needs associated with national defense; this type of research has been supported almost exclusively by the Government.
