Copper mining is the main activity in Zambia and is confined to the large scale operations, mainly on the Copperbelt. The Copperbelt covers an area of size l00km by 50 km with a total of 10 underground and 5 open-pit mines operated by Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) Limited. Most of the operations in these mines involves drilling and blasting. The loading of broken materials is by both manual and mechanical operations. Among the many risk factors associated with mining on the Copperbelt, is the occurrence of Pneumoconiosis which in the recent past has become quite prevalent and thus an important occupational health hazard for the industry. This study was carried out with the aim of establishing trends of pneumoconiosis incidence through the annual data collected by Pneumoconiosis Medical and Research Bureau of the Ministry of Health in Zambia, so that a basis could be formed for future research work. The study covers over 1,000 certified cases of Pneumoconiosis between 1960 and 1990

The title of this paper begs several questions, and three will be raised here. The answers to them will form the basis for discussion. The three questions are: What does one mean by resource independence. How is the U.S. mining industry defined. How is financial health measured.

INTRODUCTION There are many mine planning factors in sublevel caving, as in the other mining systems, which when varied can substantially alter mining costs and profit¬ability. In this chapter, the following four topics are addressed with regard to economic optimization of sub¬level caving: production planning, haulage level spacing, orepass spacing, and extraction cutoff. The costs used here are the right order of magnitude but since each mine is unique, they should be considered only as examples. The objective is to demonstrate the tech¬niques which can be used. In a real mine, the evalua¬tions must be done using actual costs and conditions. It is difficult to predict exactly the costs involved, and therefore it is valuable to perform a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the effect of making incorrect as¬sumptions. Since the mining industry is very capital intensive, the effect of the interest rate must also be studied. PRODUCTION PLAN FOR AN IRON ORE DEPOSIT Introduction The first and most important thing to do before de¬signing an underground mine is to establish a long-range production plan. Such a plan is necessary for all eco¬nomic evaluations and should provide information about the lifetime of the mine, how much ore and waste must be handled per year, how much development per year is required, etc. An example is given in the following section. Problem In an iron ore mine sublevel caving is used. The iron content is 42%, and the mine supplies a pelletizing plant with an annual capacity of 3 million t/a. The ore body is shown in Fig. 1. The length of the ore body is 1000 m and the width is 100 m. Each slice is 10 m high, and there are 10 m be¬tween crosscuts, each of which has an area of 20 m2. The density of the ore is 3.5 t/m3. The spacing between rings is 2 m, and the extraction is 100%. The iron con¬tent is 66% in the pellets and 6% in the tailings. The problem is to develop a detailed production plan. A typical sublevel caving sequence is shown in Fig. 2. Solution Amount of ore per meter of crosscut: 20 X 3.5 = 70 t. Number of crosscuts per slice= 100. Length of crosscuts per slice: 100 X 100 = 10 000. Ore from crosscuts per slice = 10 000 m X 20 m2 X 3.5 = 700 000 t. Number of sublevel caving rounds per slice: 10 000/2 = 5000. Area for each blast in sublevel caving: 10 X 10 - 20 = 80 m2. Amount of ore per blast: 80 m2 X 6 m X 3.5 = 560 t. Extraction: 100% (see extraction curve Fig. 12). Loaded ore per blast: 75% or 420 t. Loaded waste per blast: 25% or 140 t. Total: 560 t. Total amount of rock from each blast in the sublevel caving: Ore: 560 t of which 2 X 70 = 140 t from develop¬ment work and 420 t from sublevel caving. Waste: 140 t. Total: 700 t. The ore needed per year is 3 X (66-6)/42-6 5 mil¬lion t. Necessary number of blasts per year= 5,000,000/ 560 = 8929. Distance to develop per year = 8929 blasts per year X 2 m per blast 17 858 m. Total amount/year: Ore from development work 17 858 m x 70 t/m = 1.25 million t/a Ore from sublevel caving: 8929 blasts per year X 420 tons per blast = 3.75 million t/a 5.00 million t/a Waste rock dilution: 8929 blasts per year X 140 tons per blast 1.25 million t/a Total amount to hoist 6.25 million t/ a The amount of ore from development work will in¬crease a little if the horizontal drift is placed in the ore body and not in the footwall. In this example the ore loss in 20%, and the waste rock dilution is also 20%. After taking the ore loss into account, the lifetime for 100 m of the ore body will be:

Sludge obtained during the production of magnesium (Mg) from molten MgCl2 by electrolysis contains entrapped magnesium particles. The sludge containing the magnesium particles is a friable, continuous matrix of frozen salts that may also contain some oxides and impurities. Due to the high reactivity of magnesium metal with water, a dry process was developed to recover magnesium metal from the sludge. The process utilizes mineral-processing unit operations. The steps include selective comminution, screening, attritioning and tabling. Recovery of the high-grade (>90%) metal was in the 70% range. The novel process was also successfully applied to a magnesium-alloy for the recovery of metal from the sludges.

McDermitt Mine is located in northern Humboldt County, Nevada, approximately 5 miles south of the Orgeon-Nevada line (Figure I), within the Opalite Mining District. The operation is a joint venture between Placer Amex Inc., San Francisco, and Mineral Exploration Company Ltd., a limited partnership. The McDermitt orebody possesses a discontinuous, gently dipping blanket-like form within 150 feet of the surface over an area 2200 by 2500 feet. The ore zone averages 20 feet in thickness. The ore minerals consist of cinnabar (HgS) and corderoite (Hg3S2C12) deposited parallel to bedding within argillized, Miocene age, tuffaceous lacustrine sediments. Exploration indicates reserves of approximately 3,000,000 tons ore at a grade of 10 pounds mercury per ton (0.5%) An open pit mining operation utilizing scrapers and bulldozers supplies a concentrator with 700 tons of ore per day. The milling operation consists of autogenous grinding, flotation concentration, concentrate dewatering, and tailing disposal, with a design capacity of 100 tons per hour. The furnace section consists of a concentrate filter, vertical six hearth furnace, mercury condensing system, and exhaust gas scrubbing systems. It has a design capacity of 1000 pounds of dry concentrate per hour. The McDermitt orebody is situated about 2000 feet north of the Cordero Mine which, with adjacent properties, produced over 115,000 flasks (76 pounds per flask) mercury from 1941 to 1972' Two other major mercury producers in the district have been the Bretz and Opalite Mines, located in southern Malheur County, Oregon, within 5 miles of the Oregon-Nevada line. Bretz and Opalite have produced about 14,800 and 12,370 flasks mercury respectively, from 1926 to 1965.1/

The process of grinding mill quality assurance brings with it associated truths and myths. When the mill quality assurance process took its first great steps forward in the late 1970s and early 1980s, they were in response to the conditions existing, in our industry, at those times. In the late 1990s, we are faced with different conditions, and problems, and need fresh solutions. Yet the system developed for the early 1980s has produced no new approaches for the late 1990s, becoming instead more hardened and entrenched. This lack of development and actual resistance to research is now costing the industry significant amounts of money in late start-ups and useless scrap loss.

The combined 80th Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 68th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 17 and 18, 2007, in Duluth, MN. About 350 mining industry professionals attended the conference, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from the United States, Canada, Australia, Finland and Brazil. This year’s theme was “Consolidation – Growth – Technology.” The 80th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions, a keynote session that featured two distinguished speakers and a general managers session in which taconite mine operators provided updates on their operations. The Minnesota Section meeting also offered an SME short course titled “Control the Feed, Control the Mill.” More than 50 individuals at-tended the short course.

The use of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) in most of the operations in byproduct molybdenum flotation comes with safety concerns and, in some instances, a high reagent cost. Engineered solutions at the various operations where NaHS is used have immensely reduced the possibility of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas evolution. However, the threat of exposure remains, and this, coupled with the high dosages of NaHS consumed, supports the continued search for alternative depressants. This paper focuses on efforts to study the applicability of disodium carboxymethyl trithiocarbonate (DCMT), an organic depressant, as an alternative to NaHS. Bench-scale rougher flotation results for samples from the Sierrita copper–molybdenum (Cu–Mo) plant showed the best DCMT performance at 8 kg/t of DCMT, pH 10.5, 30 min of shear conditioning and 10 min of flotation conditioning. The Aminpro plant model simulation confirmed that 4 to 8 kg/t DCMT under certain shearing and conditioning times achieved superior or equivalent Mo–Cu separation efficiencies when compared\ to NaHS.

With the rapidly growing use of hydraulics in mining equipment, maintenance personnel should be familiar with the various components in hydraulic systems. Hydraulic systems do wear out - the fluids they transport are hot and turbulent, the equipment they power often imposes tremendous pressure pulsations and bending stresses, and the working environment is harsh. Therefore, even though hydraulic hoses are made of remarkably trouble-free components, they do need to be replaced periodically. There must be coupling methods that allow hoses to be replaced without disturbing other components. Couplings must also provide a variety of leak-resistant connections between hoses and other components in the hydraulic circuitry. Threaded Connection and Seals Hydraulic coupling thread ends and sealing arrangements are standardized, with many types available. Their outward appearance varies, but coupling configurations are recognizable by examining threads and seals and comparing them to the examples provided here. Iron Pipe Thread There are two kinds of iron pipe threads normally used in mining equipment circuitry - National Pipe Tapered Thread for Fuels (NPTF) and National Pipe Straight Thread Mechanical Joint (NPSM). The NPTF seal is the engagement of the coupling threads, called thread interference. When tightened, the tapered thread of the male fitting binds into that tapered thread of the female fitting to form a relatively leakproof seal (Fig. 1). In the NPSM seal, there is a 30° angle seat machined into the end of the male NPTF fitting. This seat engages with a mating 30° angle cone on the inside of the female fitting. Female NPSM fittings have straight threads, as opposed to the tapered threads of the NPTF fittings. However, most NPTF solid male fittings also have a 30° angle seat enabling them to be used with NPSM female fittings (Fig. 2). JIC and SAE Fittings Joint Industry Conference (JIC) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) seals are formed by joining two mating, conical metal surfaces. The coupling threads are used to bring and hold these surfaces together to form a leak-resistant seal. A JIC connection is a solid male threaded end, with a 37° machined male nose, mating with a 37° female flare seat. When connected, the mating surfaces are held together by the threads, but the threads do not form the seal. The female seat is created by flaring a tube end or machining the interior surface of a stem to 37°. A female JIC has a swivel nut, allowing the sealing surfaces to be joined together without twisting a hose or twisting the seats against each other (Fig. 3). JIC couplings are frequently used on low, medium, or high pressure hydraulic circuits on mining equipment and machinery. The SAE connection is similar in appearance and sealing characteristics to the JIC system, except the angle of the machined male nose and female flare seat is 45° (Fig. 4). "O" Ring Fittings Seals for "O" ring fittings are formed by compressing an "O" ring against an exposed machined surface on a mounting block or hydraulic component part. "The deposits of the east end of the Mesabi Range cover very large areas, and consist of the same taconite that produces the hematite of the central and western Mesabi. It is not deeply covered with drift, but outcrops boldly in large masses. It is not concentrated locally into enriched bodies separated by leaner areas, but is all a fairly uniform, hard, banded, unaltered chert, carrying about 25 to 30 per cent iron as magnetite.The Mesabi Iron Company, organized by Hayden, Stone & Co., and under the direction of D. C. Jackling, has taken over these deposits and is building a Concentrating plant at the new town of Babbitt, about fourteen miles east of Mesaba, Minn. This plant is to have a capacity of 2,000 to 3,000 tons per day, and is based on the application to this low grade material of the methods which have made the so-called porphyry copper properties so successful.In 1916, an experimental mill was built in Duluth; containing full sized machinery and capable of handling from 100 to 200 tons daily. A considerable tonnage of material was concentrated here during 1916, 1917 and 1918. The work showed that the resulting product could be varied, almost at will, between 60 per cent and 70 per cent iron and .006 per cent to .030 per' cent phosphorus, and that this could be made on a large scale well within the limits of cost set by iron trade conditions. A small special cargo was sent down the lakes, late in 1918, assaying 63.27 per cent iron (natural and dry) and .008 per cent phosphorus; but it is assumed that large scale shipments will normally be of a Bessemer' grade carrying about 63 per cent iron and .020 per cent to .030 per cent phosphorus. This material is a sinter, carrying only traces of sulphur and titanium, with silica between 6 per cent and 10 , per cent, and alumina, lime, magnesia, and manganese, each below 1 per cent. Some of the iron in this sinter is hematite and some is magnetite, the percentages varying according to the treatment given on the sintering machine. Like the analyses, this hematite percentage is within reasonable control. Sinter made from finely ground magnetite has much the structure of coke, being firm yet porous, and gives good account of itself in the blast furnace."

In response to Public Law 95-87 (SMCRA), Colorado promulgated regulations governing the mining of Coal. These regulations require the prediction, monitoring and mitigation of "material damage" caused by subsidence. All permitted underground coal mines within Colorado have approved subsidence programs. Preliminary monitoring results indicate the subsidence mechanical predictions have been sufficiently accurate to preclude material subsidence damage. The State of Colorado has developed a practical approach to regulating subsidence, which stresses monitoring verification of predicted subsidence phenomena. However, shortcomings exist in our ability to precisely predict the secondary consequences of subsidence, including effects to structures, the hydrologic balance and the environment. Lack of accuracy in predicting these secondary consequences results in uncertainty, necessitating conservatism in permitting. To avoid increasingly stringent permit restrictions, future research should emphasize the secondary consequences of subsidence.

"Maceral separation is one possible technique to expand coking coal resources, either by increasing the blending ratio of non- or slightly caking coal or rationally utilizing the coking coal according to the different behaviors of macerals in coking. The success of maceral enrichment for a given coal using flotation is dependent on the differences in flotation kinetic rate among macerals. This paper presents the flotation rates and zeta potentials of the vitrinite-rich and inertiniterich maceral concentrates obtained from six coal samples of different ranks – from high-volatile B bituminous coal with mean random vitrinite reflectance (Rrandom) of 0.64 percent to low-volatile bituminous coal with Rrandom of 1.73 percent – using a float-sink procedure. The flotation results show that vitrinite-rich concentrates can be produced in tap water using froth flotation only with frother for the high-volatile B and A bituminous coal samples, but there was no good performance for the high-volatile C bituminous and medium- to low-volatile bituminous coal samples. The zeta potential results show that froth flotation could probably separate the high-volatile C bituminous coal samples well by adjusting pH, but there was no good performance for the higher-rank coal samples. IntroductionMetallurgical coke is used in blast furnaces for steel production and is produced by the carbonization of coking coal. Because caking coals are rare and expensive, they are often blended with non- or slightly caking coals. Considering the tight supply-demand situation for coking coal in China, it is important and urgent to develop highly efficient technologies for rationally utilizing and expanding coking coal resources (Mochizuki et al., 2013)."

Gold surveys were sent to 21 gold operations around the world. Eleven different surveys were sent, each targeting a dif­ferent unit operation used commonly in gold processing. On a monthly basis the individual reports were returned to the opera­tions. Empirical data collected during the surveys has con­tributed to more effective engineering design. Graphical rela­tionships established have been used by the operations to "benchmark" performance against the industry and identify areas of possible improvement. This paper presents some of the findings related to the fol­lowing four surveys that investigated parameters specifically relating to carbon processing. Environmental regulation is an ever growing cost to the mining industry. Requirements for such items as air quality modeling, hazardous waste disposal, selenium concentration in water and sagebrush planting consume more of the mining industry’s resources each year. The mining industry is willing to make the necessary financial commitments to assure that the air, land and water resources are adequately protected and restored. However, it is sometimes difficult to explain to management and stockholders why money should be spent on a specific issue when science and common sense indicate it is being wasted. Common sense and sound science should dictate how mining is regulated.

For the past 30 years, surface mines have moved toward more highly mechanized, automatic systems that continuously mine overburden and ore to increase productivity, lower operating costs and minimize manpower needs. To achieve these goals, mine operators must be involved in every step of the machine procurement process. Several factors are involved in making the machines operate economically and efficiently: -Prudent engineering. -Proper planning. -Realistic feasibility studies. -Effective specification. -Thorough training of the mine personnel.

Longwall faces can move at high advancing rates, but many geological variations can cause unexpected instabilities and production losses. The rapid movement makes it necessary to evaluate different geologic conditions in the rock mass as fast as possible to assess their effects on the longwall face and shields. It is believed that prompt awareness of geologic conditions is the key to preventing instability at a longwall face. This paper introduces the application of fuzzy set theory for characterizing and evaluating roof conditions. Real-time monitored data coupled with fuzzy set analysis provides valuable information, such as shield leg pressure, developing load on shields, intervals of periodic weighting and the ratio of developing loads during periodic to normal times.

Common clay is a natural, fine-grained material composed of hydrous aluminum silicates. Shale is a laminated sedimentary rock that is formed by the consolidation of clay, mud or silt. Production About 150 companies produced common clay and shale in 41 states. In states not reporting production, common clay and shale probably was mined and sold for construction applications by companies not participating in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) canvass of producers. Domestic production in 2005 was estimated to be 24.8 Mt (27.3 million st) valued at $176 million. This was based on a preliminary survey of the common clay and shale industry. The leading producer states, in decreasing order by tonnage, were North Carolina, Texas, Alabama, Georgia and Ohio.

Slags generated by the ferrous-metals industry can be used to produce high-tech ceramic materials. The properties of these ceramics can be controlled by judicious choices of composition, additives, and processing parameters. Standard methods of materials handling, such as comminution and mixing, are as applicable to slag as to any other mineralogic raw material. In this study, foundry slag was ground, homogenized, melted and formed to produce a glass, and then heat treated to crystallize it into a high-strength glass-ceramic. The product shows promise as a low-cost wear-resistant tile material which can be custom cast. This and similar materials, made from slags and natural rocks, are candidates for use as construction materials, acid-resistant piping, shock-resistant sheathing, rot-proof pilings, and, when foamed, even as pontoons.
