As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalization, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that are suited to the contemporary and future mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more. In countries like Australia, where mining plays a crucial role in the economy, the need for curriculum updates is more pressing than ever. As the mining industry evolves with new technologies and sustainable practices, there is a growing demand for a workforce skilled in these modern approaches. Recognizing this necessity, universities such as the University of New South Wales and Curtin University have taken significant steps to revamp their educational programs. By updating their academic offerings, both universities aim to equip graduates with the necessary skills to drive innovation and sustainability in mining, supporting Australia’s development as a leader in this critical sector. Moreover, the selection of topics that drive curricula update and the focus of the research institutions in mining engineering must extend beyond mere technological and technical aspects to include social and ethical dimensions. In this context, the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, in association with the Colorado School of Mines, has introduced the topic of Humanitarian Engineering (HE) in 2020. HE is a socio-technical approach that focuses on developing engineering solutions that promote the sustainable development of communities addressing their basic needs and aiming to improve their quality of life (10, 18). By focusing on sustainable development, community engagement, and equitable resource distribution, HE helps the industry build positive relationships with stakeholders, reduce conflicts, and foster social license to operate. As the mining industry seeks sustainable and socially responsible practices, future engineers require training in this area to understand the broader impacts of their work, fostering a mindset that prioritizes community well-being and environmental stewardship alongside technical proficiency.

Limonite is a general term for a group of amorphous iron oxide and iron hydroxide materials. It is considered as one of the very refractory iron ore types due to its wide variation in chemical composition, iron content, moisture content and easily sliming in the course of comminution. Iron grade of test sample is 25.48%, the iron minerals are mainly limonite; and the gangue minerals consist of quartz and feldspar in majority, secondarily silicate minerals. In this test work, high intensity magnetic separation (HIMS)-cationic reverse flotation and magnetic roasting-low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) tests were conducted on limonite ore. The test results show that the concentrate with iron grade of 50.97% and recovery of 68.50% can be obtained by HIMS-cationic reverse flotation technique; while using magnetic roasting-LIMS technique, the better concentrate indexes of iron grade of 60.36% and recovery of 89.71% are achieved, and the iron grade of tailing is only 4.42%. Therefore, the magnetic roasting-LIMS technique is a better suitable method for beneficiation of low-grade limonite ore. America's bulk commodity transportation systems have taken on a new look in the 1970's and 1980's. Railroad systems, barge lines providing inland and intra- coastal waterway transportation, and Great Lakes carriers have undergone substantial changes through mergers and acquisitions, consolidations of ownership and control, and construction of modern intermodal transportation facilities linking railroads and water carriers. The new look has generated some concerns and opportunities with regard to producers and shippers of bulk commodities which are characterized by the necessity of moving large quantities of heavy materials long distances. Clearly such transportation requirements call for efficient railroad and water carrier services. Shippers of commodities like coal, grain, .chemicals, minerals, ores, forest products, petroleum products, and heavy manufactured goods find reductions in transportation competition lead to concerns that rates charged by carriers will not be sufficiently constrained by market forces. At the same time, new policies on contracting for railroad services can lead to greater efficiencies, a rewarding opportunity for carriers which should be shared with shippers and consumers of bulk commodities. Then, of course, there's a related problem that in the absence of effective competition, the benefits of increased carrier efficiency will not be passed on, in part, to shippers and consumers, causing losses in markets for producers.

Extensive testing in the past ten years has shown that where a uniform natural gamma background is present in the strata bordering the seam, the thickness of the boundary coal left in place after mining can be determined by measuring the attenuation of that radiation (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989). Measurements made by the authors in underground mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky, and by others in Wyoming and New Mexico, have shown the presence of such a gamma background (Nelson, 1989). Natural gamma coal thickness sensors of several configurations have been tested in mines owned and operated by the Consolidation Coal Company in Pennsylvania and west Virginia (Nelson and Bessinger, 1988).

Using an instrumented laboratory high-pressure grinding rolls mill, the grinding force, gap dimension, mass flow rate and net mill power were measured for six coals and a crystalline quartz. A technique was developed to estimate the compressive stress-strain curves for compression of the materials in the mill plus the effects of elastic decompression. To reconcile the mill power and grinding pressure results, it was necessary to allow for the energy recovery on decompression. No clear correlation was obtained between the form of the stress-strain curves or the variation of specific mill power factor with the Hardgrove grindability index (HGI), although coals with the lowest and highest HGIs (i.e., 44 and 106) gave results significantly different from the other coals. Feeds below 140 mesh (105 µm) flowed more rapidly than coarser feeds and would not build up high grinding pressures. This indicated shearing and fluidlike properties rather than compression as a locked bed.

This paper reviews the results of the subsidence research prop ram at Sandia National Laboratories. The manuscript highlights the following: the application of empirical methods (profile functions) to the subsidence above longwall panels in the U.S.; the use of the "rubble model" to describe the behavior of broken strata as it distends when it falls to the Mine floor (or top of the rubble pile) and then is subsequently compacted as it is loaded by overlying elements of strata; and, the application of physical modeling techniques (centrifuge simulations) and numerical techniques to study the failure mechanisms in highly structured stratigraphy. The capabilities of the latter two are illustrated ')y comparing their predictions to the results of a field case that has complicated stratigraphy.

INTRODUCTION This paper is the outgrowth of work done by the authors to prepare the seismic design criteria for underground structures on the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) Metro Rail Project. It is a follow-on to a similar paper presented at the October, 1984, ASCE National Convention (17). For design, the earthquake-induced distortions recommended herein are to be added to the normal static loading conditions for the underground structure. This design approach has been used by 18 section designers on the SCRTD Project. Preliminary results from two- and three-dimensional finite element solutions have partially verified the approach. Areas where additional research is needed for special cases are identified. EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE The effects of earthquakes on underground structures may be broadly grouped into two general classes -shaking and faulting. In response to earthquake motion of bedrock (shaking) , the soil transmits energy by waves. Seismologists identify various types of earthquake waves, but underground engineers are generally interested in the effects of transverse shear waves which produce a displacement of the ground transverse to the axis of wave propagation. Mount Isa Mine should be regarded as a large mining complex rather than one mine. This arises from the geography, variety and extent of the orebodies, the mining methods, and the use of 14 shafts for ventilation distribution. A brief resume is presented here since comprehensive descriptions of lead-zinc mining methods {11}, copper mining methods {2 }{3}, geology 241, stope fill {5} and ventilation techniques {6}{7}, have all been published in the last five years. Mining extends over a north-south strike length of 2.5 miles (4 Ian) with a maximum width across dip approaching 3 200 ft (1 Ian). Current mining is to a depth of 3 150 ft (960 m) with the ore hoisting shafts extending 660 ft (200 m) deeper. The composite longitudinal section, Figure 1, shows a representational disposition of the copper and lead-zinc-silver orebodies in the central shaft complex where the main service and hoisting shafts are located. To the south the X41 man and materials shaft provides access to the copper area. The mine layout is typical of high tonnage track- less mines, utilising a large diesel fleet, raise- borers and some large diameter hole stope drilling. Mining methods include sublevel open stoping, slot and massfire, and a trial vertical crater retreat in the copper ore, and sublevel caving, sublevel open stopes with and without rib pillar recovery, and mechanised cut and fill in the numerous lead orebodies. All ore reports to one of the three crushing systems located below 19 level in the central shaft complex. Copper ore is hauled exclusively along the 19 level computer assisted Rockflo haulage system, and lead-zinc-silver ores report via central orepasses from Granby haulages on 13 level and 15 level. Tonnages hoisted during the 1977178 financial year were 5.0 million for copper at 3.2%. and 2.3 million for lead-zinc-silver at 7.8%. 6.3% and 7.06 oz/ton (216 g/tonne) respectively.

Some 30 years ago Stevenson (1940) underscored the fact that most of the world's molybdenite production came from the Cordillera that comprise the western part of North America, and that the northern extension of the Cordillera into British Columbia is not essentially dissimilar to the United States section. Therefore, in view of the successful development of molybdenite resources in the United States, he concluded that prospecting in the Canadian section f the Cordillera should be encouraged. However, as recently as seven years ago Schneider (1963) remarks that no large economic deposits have been brought into production in British Columbia, although one important property was being evaluated. World production f molybdenum ore was sporadic until 1900. Among the very early producing areas in North America were Arizona and New Mexico in the United States. World War I provided the stimulus that brought the Climax deposit into production, and in 1920 Questa, New Mexico followed, although the ore came from fissure vein deposits at that time. In the early part f this century high grade deposits in various parts f the world containing 5-20 percent MoS2 were exploited. In Canada most production during World War I came from Quebec and Ontario. With the build-up of world tension and the inception f hostilities in 1939, British demand was satisfied by United States producers (Schneider, 1963).

Rubidium and cesium were discovered by Bunsen and Kirchhoff about 100 years ago. These two elements are by no means as abundant as sodium or potassium. Their occurrence in minerals is widespread, but usually as minor constituents. There is no known specific ore containing rubidium, but rubidium is found replacing the. other alkali metals in .some minerals.. Perhaps the highest concentration of rubidium found in one mineral is in lepidolite, KLi(OH,F)2A12Si3010, which contains from 0 to 3.5%*Rb20. 0n the average, lepidolite contains about 0.5% Rb20. Other sources of rubidium are carnallite, KMgCl3?6H20; pollucite, H20.2Cs20.2AI203.9SiO2; rhodizite, R20.2A1203-3B203; biotite, H2K(Mg,Fe)3A1(Si04)3; sea water, rivers, marine and fresh water organisms, soils, and plants. Cesium, even though it is the least abundant. of the stable alkalies, has a specific ore. Pollucites a hydrous cesium aluminum silicate, may con¬tain as high as 42.5% Cs20, although again, the average Cs20 content is about 25% among the handful of known deposits. Other cesium-containing minerals are lepidolite and carnallite. Rubidium and cesium are very much like potassium in chemical properties, consequently, they are hard to separate. Because of the difficulty in obtaining pure cesium and rubidium compounds coupled with the scarcity-of supply, prices were high and the two elements enjoyed little industrial use. INTRODUCTION R&D activities are needed, at a minimum, for a company's competitive survival followed in importance by the growth and diversification of the company. For most industrial companies, however, R&D is the business area that has been the most difficult relative to confident long-range financial commitments and effective control and relative to its value as a long-term investment. Investors look not only at the current profitability of the company but increasingly at the plans, actions, and quality of the personnel in position to improve the market position and profitability of an organization. "The strongest predictor of investment value is the degree of innovation of the 'company.' I believe this is true of both strategic planning and R&D activities." R&D is the lifeblood of a company's future. If this basic premise-R&D for survival and growth-is believed to be true, why is it necessary to "Sell R&D in your organization? My personal experience, in a number of organizations, is that R&D budget is perceived as a business element area that could be delayed or reduced to improve the bottom line during difficult business conditions. I believe the following quote speaks volumes about this subject-"There is only one thing I know for certain about research, and that is it costs money-lots of it." -Unnamed, Hard- headed Financial Executive. A business must make money and be profitable in order to maintain and create jobs, pay taxes, cover working capital and costs of goods sold, and most importantly, create value for its shareholders. The foremost element of selling R&D, therefore, is to consistently demonstrate the R&D group's contribution to the bottom line.

Everyone forms his own mental picture when the subject of copper is mentioned. To an architect, copper is a warm, enduring metal with a quiet beauty; to the historian, man's first metal; to the product engineer, the best electrical and thermal conductor of all commercial metals; to the investor, a volatile stock; to the speculator, the daily price quotation; to those in the mining industry, the challenge of producing copper for rising needs in the face of rising costs and lower grades of ore. At this meeting, we will look upon copper as a key raw material in industry, in national defense, in technology, in world trade, and as a principal commodity in the economies of several developing countries. As miners, and most of us here are miners, we are prone to view our role as suppliers of copper. We locate, mine, smelt and refine the metal. In the complexities of today's world, however, following a period of the longest domestic copper strike in history which caused critical world-wide shortages and widely fluctuating prices; it becomes necessary for all of us to concern ourselves with the whole spectrum of copper affairs -"from mine to consumer " But first we need to look at the miner's side of the picture -- capacity and production. We will examine these functions in terms of the whole world -- not simply the free world. Nature did not endow all regions of the earth equally, and copper in world trade has a way of ignoring political boundaries. Science and technology, as well, know no national boundaries. It is said that the "Engineering & Mining Journal" has as many readers in the Communist World as in the Free World. Nor is this a one-way street. We presently have available to us in the. U.S., cover-to-cover translations of many Communist World mining and metallurgical journals.

Small tonnage ore bodies can be developed at a profit on a short life basis. Such is the case of the Bardon Mine in. the Big Indian Mining District in San Juan County. Utah. Faced with a small initial tonnage of high grade uranium ore, the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation Engineers developed some new ideas for sinking the shaft and planned extraction to warrant the capital risk to mine a limited reserve. The Bardon Mine is located fifty miles southeast of Moab, Utah in the south end of the Big Indian Mining -district. Shattuck Denn Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation, manages and operates the property under an operating agreement with Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc. of. Oklahoma City. Oklahoma, and Anderson Development Corporation of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Based. on Kerr-McGee drilling., a tabular ore body about 350 feet long by 250 feet wide with an average thickness in excess of seven feet was indicated.- The ore body strikes easterly-westerly and dips from nine to twelve degrees to the south. Uraninite is the dominant uranium ore mineral associated with vanadium. The ore occurs in an arkosic conglomeratic sandstone with some interfingering of mudstone and shale in the Mossback member of the Chinle formation in contact with the underlying Cutler formation. The ore horizon is overlain with 40 to 60 feet of mudstone and shale. Fortunately, the back. immediately over the ore is a reasonable competent shaley sandstone which has made a fairly good. environment for roof bolting.

An ongoing research program at the Spokane Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is directed toward investigating drilling parameters (thrust, torque, penetration rate, and drill revolutions) during the drilling of roof bolt holes. A system that measures these drilling parameters calculates the specific energy of drilling, and determines drill bit position has been developed by the Bureau and mounted on a roof bolting/drilling machine, through the use of a microcomputer, critical drilling parameters can be immediately interpreted and analyzed. This makes it possible to inform the operator of hazardous roof conditions. Initial results of this program are presented here.

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. The Copper Range Company's mining properties are located in the Upper Penisula of Michigan. (Fig.). Early work indicated the presence of copper ore in a bedded deposit, confined to the base of the Upper Keweenawan Nonesuch shale, and exploitation of this deposit on a portion of the Company's property was undertaken by White Pine Copper Company. Diamond drilling of the White Pine orebody indicated that a major fault pattern terminated the values to the South-west. Further drilling Southwest of the fault zone proved a downward displacement of the ore bearing horizon some 1,500 feet and a lateral displacement of approximately 4,000 feet; and in this area an ore deposit was outlined in a large asymmetrical syncline locally plunging to the South-west. Recent research has shown that froth flotation is not effective at treating fine coals (-28 mesh) containing a large portion of middling particles. Due to their relatively large density differences, middling particles can be separated more efficiently using gravity-based processes. The ability of gravity separators to treat fine particles has been limited by the lack of particle inertia relative to the surface drag forces. However, particle inertia can be enhanced by the application of a centrifugal field. A commercial-scale centrifugal Falcon concentrator capable of treating a mass flow rate of greater than 1 tph continuously has been used to evaluate its feasibility for treating fine coal as an alternative to froth flotation. Tests conducted on a -28 mesh fine coal circuit feed have found the Falcon concentrator to be very effective at cleaning the 28 x 325 mesh size fraction. For an Illinois No. 5 coal sample, the ash content was reduced in the 100 x 325 mesh size fraction from about 18% to 8% while achieving a high combustible recovery value of nearly 97%. In addition, the total sulfur content was substantially decreased from 2.6% to 1.7%. The effects of the critical operating parameters on separation performance have been studied and their values optimized.

In the article "Concentration of Oil Shale,"(1) Dr. N. Arbiter stated, "One of the major factors in the delayed utilization of oil shale as an energy raw material is the low grade or content of hydrocarbon (kerogen) in oil shale as compared with coal and even more so to the liquid and gaseous fuels. " When the availability of high-grade deposits decreased, mineral industries started adopting prebeneficiation procedures for the low-grade deposits. This practice, which is becoming standard in these other industries, has been largely overlooked by the oil shale industry in its drive to produce oil from oil shale. If a major portion of this mineral matter can be removed, there can be potentially large savings in the capital and operating costs of oil shale retorts. Moreover, the environmental impact, associated with recovering the shale oil, could be reduced considerably. In 1980 Roberts & Schaefer Resource Service (RSRS) completed successfully the first set of demonstration runs with a 20-ton oil shale sample from Cathedral Bluffs (C-b tract), Colorado. This relatively low grade (~12 gpt oil content) oil shale was beneficiated applying the Dutch State Mines Heavy Medium Cyclone process. (2)
