Use of prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) for pressure tunnel liners is gaining popularity with contractors, engineers, and owners. This paper presents loading considerations and a beam-spring computer model approach to tunnel liner analysis, together with ultimate strength (US) and service load (SL) procedures for liner design. The US procedure is best suited to check for adequate liner strength under extreme loading conditions. The SL procedure, based on conventional pipeline design practice, is considered more appropriate when addressing crack control and serviceability under normal working load conditions. Other design and construction considerations are discussed and a design example is presented.

Ontario, one of the richest mining districts in the world, is a natural storehouse for much of the earth's fresh water supply. Covering over 344,000 square miles, the surface of this Canadian Province is dotted with 250,000 fresh water lakes and is laced with uncounted thousands of fresh water rivers and streams. The southern portion of the Province, for the most part, is flat or lazily rolling farmland. This is where most of the people in Ontario live. Although it is not a major mining area, southern Ontario does possess important deposits of salt, oil, gas and gypsum. Most of these deposits are being actively worked. Toronto, the capital city of Ontario, lies deep in the southern region. Here the climate is mild and the winters are short. The total annual precipitation consists of 27 inches of rain and 65 inches of snow. Most of the major mining companies that do business in Canada have made Toronto their Canadian headquarters. There are two reasons for this. The first, of course, is money. Toronto is the gathering place of many well- known financial institutions. The second is access. Toronto lies within a few hundred miles of some of the most spectacular mining enterprises that exist in the world.

Experience from Australia had identified what is referred to as nonconventional surface subsidence behavior. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence,” and far-field horizontal movements, occurring even beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behavior recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam, leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900 ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 to 720 ft. Investigations, including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program, found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and farfield horizontal movements may have occurred, resulting from the adjacent mining. Besides discussing the phenomenon of nonconventional subsidence behavior and the Ryerson State Park case study, this paper includes an assessment of the mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioral mechanisms.

Acid production or acid drainage is a major environmental issue that also has negative implications on the aquifer system surrounding the mine tailings area. The approach to controlling acid mine drainage involves physical and geochemical characterization that affect acid production. The material permeability determines the availability of oxygen, which is paramount in acid production in coal rejects, and varies with depth. In this paper the author presents the variation in oxidized pyrite/acid production with depth in black coal mine washery wastes. Chemical kinetic parameters and the diffusive parameters have been used to obtain the variation in oxygen content and the oxidized pyrite content with respect to the depth and time. Its dependence on porosity and moisture content is illustrated.

The sequential copper analysis method is a particularly useful technique to semi-quantitatively define the geologic, mineralogic, and metallurgical types and zonations commonly associated with porphyry-type copper deposits. The method is based on the partial dissolution behavior displayed by the prevalent copper minerals malachite, chrysocolla, chalcocite, and chalcopyrite to solutions containing sulfuric acid and sodium cyanide. Results from sequential analyses of the sample and analytical residue using sulfuric acid followed by sodium cyanide and then aqua regia solutions when compared with conventional total copper analyses can determine the amounts of leachable oxide minerals, leachable secondary sulfide minerals, and primary copper minerals, respectively. Sequential assay analytical results and interpretation are presented for copper deposits in Chile, Mexico, and the United States.

The need to optimize surface mining operations has led to the use of discrete event simulation (DES) modeling of truck-shovel systems. Often, these models assume truck cycle times are independent and identically distributed (iid) random variables, although, with significant bunching on the haul routes, this may not be valid. The objective of this paper is to present a methodology to (i) account for truck bunching due to slow trucks; and (ii) test for cycle time dependence (i.e. whether truck cycle time data is iid or not). We built a DES model that accounts for bunching due to a slow truck(s) and used the cycle times as data for further analysis. We then tested for cycle time dependence using Pearson correlation coefficients. The results show significant correlation of truck cycle times for different number slow trucks, with variable speeds. Assuming iid in modeling results in over-estimation of productivity and the uncertainty surrounding it. The over-estimation of uncertainty is pronounced when the relative difference in truck speed increases. The confidence interval of the means of truck loads/shift decreases with increasing number of slow operators. This work extends the usefulness of DES in truck-shovel applications.

Australia is the world's largest coal exporter, and technological advancement is a key element of the coal industry strategy. The issues include: increased recovery of saleable coal; enhanced quality, i.e. lower ash, moisture, fines, phosphorus (sulphur is a relatively minor problem for Australian coals); better quality control; higher throughputs/lower costs; improved handling and transport; and reduced environmental impacts. In process terms, many coal preparation operations, particularly fine coal circuits, are relatively inefficient, and all circuits must also be matched and integrated for optimum overall operation. A holistic approach to technological improvement is desirable. This paper summarises research and development efforts, within CSIRO and its collaborators, across the unit operations as outlined in the title.

Pressure oxidation is a hydrometallurgical oxidative pretreatment for refractory ores, such as sulfide ores. Here, simultaneous alkaline pressure oxidation and sodium cyanide leaching treatments were carried out on a pyritic ore from the Mulatos Mine located in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico. Mineral characterization, agitation leaching, hot cyanidation under atmospheric pressure conditions, simultaneous moderated pressure oxidation and leaching, and kinetic testing results are shown. The modified variables were temperature, pressure, and cyanide concentration. Characterization indicated that pyrite was the main mineral. Simultaneous pressure oxidation and leaching experiments were conducted at a temperature range of 40–80 °C, oxygen pressure of 87.5–200 psi, and cyanide concentration of 0.8–1.2 wt% in a 2-L Parr pressure reactor. A dissolution rate of 81–86% was achieved under the following conditions: 87.5 psi, 80 °C, 0.8 wt% NaCN, for 1 h.

Rather than attempting to present a summary of the many and highly varied papers that have been presented at this symposium on sampling and grade control, I will attempt to extract the general philosophy of analysis and approach, and attempt to identify the trend of future developments. First, the term "sampling" is used with its broadest connotations. A sample consists of a representative portion of a larger mass, and must represent the mass not only in the grade of contained metals or minerals, but also in all other respects in terms of mineralogy and mineral quality (1, 5), deleterious materials, recoverability of economic components, physical behavior, geophysical response (1), and even archaeological and environmental aspects (7, 11). The sample must be taken from a locality and in such a manner and quantity that it is representative of the larger rock mass. This calls for complete and accurate geological control and an understanding of the nature and distribution of the contained chemical and physical elements and a record of the effectiveness of the different sampling methods. Second, value of a given mass of ore material is based upon its profitability - the difference between recoverable value and costs to achieve recovery, beneficiation and sale. There is a strong movement in mining geology control toward more complete analysis in determining cutoff grades and in grade control, as illustrated by the kriging of metallurgical recovery factors as well as grade at the Mercur Mine (8). To achieve a "profitability factor" as a guide for economic mining practice requires further integration of: 1) the value of contained metal or mineral, 2) percentage recovery of values, 3) dilution of ore with waste rock, 4) addition to, or loss of value as a consequence of by-product materials or deleterious components, 5) cost of producing a saleable product plus minimum profit to justify the effort (cutoff), and 6) cost of land restoration (7, 11). All these parameters vary with the rock type, rock structure, mineralogy, depth, geometry, mining and metallurgical methods, but they must be sampled and analyzed if sampling and grade control are to reflect profitability. A wide variety of deposits has been presented at this symposium; each deposit with its own problems and special solutions. Deposits containing high unit-value components, e.g. precious metals and diamonds, present special problems in the obtaining of accurate samples and generally require statistical analysis control methods or may disregard or modify occasional high or occasional low values, based upon experience (12). Grade control may be accurate for the long term but may vary for the short term. Bulk sampling is always essential. Deposits containing metals or minerals with low unit value are very sensitive to transport costs, and they are often very sensitive to small amounts of deleterious components or differences in physical or chemical behavior. Problems of sampling and grade control change with the genetic type of deposit, with the stage of deposit development and with the size of the information base. Precious metal epithermal deposits (2, 6, 8), because of rapid vertical zonation and erratic lateral distribution of values, have always been difficult to evaluate and maintain grade control and ore reserves. On the other hand, evaluation and grade control are relatively easy in bulk-lowgrade deposits (4, 13). However, these deposits generally have a low margin of profit and are sensitive to mining and beneficiaton costs, price fluctuations and political costs. Industrial mineral deposits (5) often must be evaluated on the basis of their behavior, rather than by chemical analysis. Environmental impact generally increases with the scale of the operation, but certain elements or minerals have especially high impact effects (7, 11). In the exploration phase there is no production control of sampling procedures and careful geological observations are particularly essential. The greatest number of problems is related to the oxidized outcrop where the chemical environment of the ore body has changed and the contained values may have been enriched, depleted or values left unchanged (2, 6). Present evidence suggests that gold values may be very mobile under certain conditions (2, 6) and stable under others. Everything must be sampled in detail. Principal values and by-product or deleterious elements may vary dependent upon their position within the soil profile. Such factors as geomorphic position, erosion rate, vegetation, climate, etc., may affect the interpretation (1, 3). The main conditions which affect investment in mineral exploration and development are compared in five countries currently considered attractive for mineral investment - Canada, the U.S., Australia, Brazil and the Philippines. The primary parameters - the probability of occurrence and discovery of mineral deposits and the short and long term viability of mineral development - are evaluated and compared on a relative basis by a form of factor analysis. This analysis indicates that of the five countries studied, Canada is second only to the United States in degree of favourability for mineral exploration and development.

The introduction of recent advances in molecular biology into the field of microbial ecology has made available a powerful set of analytical tools for dissecting the structure of microbial communities in natural environments. The use of these approaches, many of them based on DNA-DNA hybridization enables the researcher to assess the occurrence of specific DNA sequences among the natural bacterial flora (Ford and Olson 1987). These techniques promise to have wide application as tools for monitoring the spread of introduced microorganisms (Trevors, 198'): Ford and Olson. 1987) and have been used to examine the response of bacterial communities to environmental contaminants and stressors (Barkay and Olson. 1986. Olson and Ford. 1986. Olson. Ford and Lester 1987) The occurrence of heavy metal resistance among microorganisms has been discussed as a possible tool for the detection of pathfinder elements employed in mineral exploration (Olson and Barkay 1986). In addition, the occurrence of heavy metal resistant bacteria may be utilized in protocols for assessing the occurrence and biological impact of contamination occurring as a consequence of mining operations. In this context the use of DNA hybridization technology enables the investigator to directly quantify the number of heavy metal resistant bacteria by the use of genetic probes specific for those resistance genes. The implementation of a strategy for detection of heavy metal resistance genes by hybridization technology is dependent on the availability of data on the genetic systems which encode resistance The availability of extensive DNA sequence data on mercury resistance genes (Brown et a11986. Barrineau et al 1984) has lead us to use gene probes specific for mercury resistance within natural bacterial populations as a model system for investigating the response of these bacterial populations to the occurrence of mercury In the environment.

All pigments and extenders or fillers whether organic or inorganic fall into the following broad general classes: I. Colored II.-White III. Black IV. Metallic A pigment- is any particulate matter that is essentially insoluble and chemically unaffected by the media into which it is dispersed. According to this very broad definition, colored pigments, white pigments, fillers, extenders, and functional pigments would all be included. The particulate size range would also be quite broad ranging from very fine colloidal particles (~0.01µ) to relatively coarse particles (~100.0µ). This broad definition is usually subdivided into more practical divisions which tend to relate the classification of the pigment to its primary function in the system in which it is used. Hence, the word extender implies that its major purpose may be to extend the system.

The SO2-ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquor generated by leaching of manganese nodules, after removal of minor quantities of iron and manganese, contained copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc and (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper from the leach liquor with LIX 84I, stripping of ammonia from the Cu-barren raffinate was carried out followed by precipitation of metal ions from the ammonia-stripped solution as sulfides. Leaching of the sulfide precipitate was carried out with H2SO4 to obtain a leach liquor containing 0.58 kg/m3 Cu, 2.67 kg/m3 Zn, 2.00 kg/m3 Co, 24.68 kg/m3 Ni and 10.0 kg/m3 (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper and zinc from the sulfate leach liquor with LIX 84I and D2EHPA, respectively, the solution was left with Co and Ni. Extraction of cobalt from the Cu- and Zn-free solution was carried out with 0.1 M PC88A and stripping of the cobalt-loaded organic was carried out with the cobalt-spent electrolyte (pH 1.4). Extraction of nickel from the cobalt-free solution was carried out with 90% neutral 1M NaPC88A followed by stripping of the nickel-loaded organic with 120 kg/m3 H2SO4 solution. Extraction of metal ions increased with increasing equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The maximum separation factors, with respect to the pH and extractant concentration variation studies, were 3796.7 and 15350.0, respectively. The extracted species for the metal ions were CoA2?3HA and NiA2?5HA.

INTRODUCTION This paper deals with some practical aspects of the use and interpretation of dosimetric methods for assessing the exposure of workers to natural uranium. Consideration must be given not only to the scientific value of the method of dosimetry, but also to the practicality of the method in the particular working environment. It is generally accepted (IAEA, 1976) that uranium does not present a hazard during the mining and extraction processes up to the final concentration stage, that is precipitation as ADU or calcining to the oxide. Further processing (e.g. conversion to oxides, fluorides, etc.) is generally associated with the nuclear industry. It is customary for uranium processing facilities to be managed according to industrial norms rather than according to those applied for the purpose of radiation protection. This is mainly because of the large quantity of material to be processed and the fact that uranium is considered to be of a low radiotoxicity. Although ventilation is used to some extent, provision is not made for the same level of protection as would be required in a radiochemical facility. It is typical in such a plant to find that the process itself may be enclosed and ventilated, but the ventilation is inadequate to cope with an accidental release of material. The working environment is poorly ventilated, sometimes only by natural ventilation, and one frequently finds areas with high airborne dust levels, designated as mandatory respirator areas. Protection of personnel is dependent on personal protective equipment. Radiation protection is not of prime concern and personnel are not specifically trained in this subject. It is in this type of environment that acceptable monitoring procedures and personnel dosimetry must be established. The effectiveness and practical application of the dosimetry must also be judged against this working environment. DOSIMETRIC TECHNIQUES The methods available for assessing personnel exposure, whether it be in terms of chemical or radiological hazard, include urinalysis, faecal analysis and [in vivo] monitoring. Faecal analysis does not present itself easily as a method for routine use. Techniques for [in vivo] monitoring have been developed recently and as expensive instrumentation is required, it is not generally available. That leaves urinalysis as a dosimetric technique for routine use, and it is probably for this reason that urinalysis is still widely used. Guidelines for the interpretation of urinalysis results, as originally provided by Neuman (Neuman, 1950), are still used in practice, even though it has become clear that this method has severe limitations as regards the assessment of the dose as a result of the intake of class W or class Y compounds (Alexander, 1974). Typically a level of 300 µg [U/C] urine can serve as an indicator of an acute exposure (above which chemical damage to the kidneys may occur) and a level of 100 µg [U/C ] urine can serve as an indicator for an investigation. Such levels are determined and are used in conjunction with several factors, such as mode of intake (ingestion or inhalation), solubility of compound (D, W or Y), means of intake (acute or chronic), environmental monitoring results and frequency of urine sampling. Since the ICRP concept for internal radiation limitation changed from that of the critical organ, i.e. the single organ of greatest significance under the circumstances, to that of effective dose equivalent, i.e. account being taken of the total risk due to the exposure of all tissue, the maximum permissible organ burden (MPOB) was replaced as secondary dose limit by the annual limit on intake (ALI) (ICRP, 1977). The ALI values are calculated from the committed dose equivalents of the various organs, and are used to determine organ burdens, which are then used to interpret the dosimetric results. Using the ICRP model (ICRP, 1979), a comprehensive calculation was made by Johnson (Johnson, 1980), giving organ burdens and excretion data in terms of intake for acute and chronic exposures for different categories of uranium compounds. The question arises as to what extent the direct measurement of intake can be utilised as a method of dosimetry. Land management planning is an important issue in all jurisdictions, especially as it relates to mineral development. These planning documents are prepared at different intervals and reflect the realities at the time that they were prepared. The Seven Questions to Sustainability developed during the North American Process of the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) project are proposed for the evaluation of Land Use Plans as they relate to Mineral Development. This paper provides the background to the Seven Questions to Sustainability and how it can be applied to the evaluation of land use plans with specific reference to Resource Management Plans developed by the U. S. Department of the Interior?s Bureau of Land Management in Nevada. While this paper is focused on Nevada, the approach is broadly applicable and may be used in other planning regimes.

Silver-gold ratios were studied at the Tayoltita epithermal vein deposit using channel sample, channel sample line, stope, ore body and vein sample populations. The ratios are highly variable among individual channel samples (25:1 to greater than 500:1) with both high and low values randomly distributed within ore bodies and veins. Whole vein ratios for the fourteen most important ore producing structures range from 44:1 to 105:1, and show zonal distribution relative to two small granitic stocks, low values closest to the intrusives. The zoned nature of the deposit suggests that the stocks, apophyses of an underlying batholith of Late Eocene age, were the heat engines which powered the hydrothermal system responsible for ore deposition.

In the extractive industry the term ‘continuous improvement’ (CI) usually means procurement of the latest state of the art equipment. This is generally perceived as the only way to add further value to the supply chain, with the driving philosophy of increased tonnage to dilute operational costs. However, not all market places can facilitate this approach. RJB lives in a fiercely competitive market and has targeted the standard efficiency drivers of rationalisation and stock management with a vengeance; and also operate CMMS (Computer Maintenance Management System), RCM (Routine Condition Monitoring)and CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) methodologies. Ultimately though, these systems are only as good as the people who operate and manage them and to add further value without procurement, people must be re-introduced back into the operation. Through TPM (Total Productive Mining), that is what RJB have set out to do.

Fractures of sedimentary rocks in the vicinity of the outcrop are commonly encountered around the world. Mine highwalls and numerous highway cuts give excellent views for detailed study of surface fractures. This paper gives an explanation of the origin of fractures as well as characterization of the distribution and extent of joint system with reference to lithologic composition of the rocks. Practical implications of the joint system affecting mine operations are described. Among the subjects discussed are: discontinuous deformation as an effect of surface subsidence, stability of mine portals and near outcrop underground operations, and stability of highwalls, when using highwall miners and strip operations. Some design procedures are recommended that can minimize the problems encountered in mining areas with intense joint systems.

Industrial-mineral mining started early in the history of the State when salt was extensively mined for use in processing gold and silver ores, and borates were produced to meet most of the world's needs. After this start, industrial-mineral production grew slowly until World War II, mostly because of the remoteness of the State and the small population. Nevada now has a large and varied industrial-mineral industry. In 1983, 14 principal commodities were produced from 48 deposits; the total value of these materials was 168 million dollars. Nevada ranks first in domestic production of barite and magnesite; second in diatomite, gem stones, and lithium; third in fluorspar; and sixth in gypsum. Other materials produced are carbonate rocks, cement, clays, decorative and crushed stone, light- weight aggregate, perlite, pyritic soil additive, salt, sand and gravel, and silica. From 1978 through 1982 barite was the most important commodity; in 1983 diatomite surpassed barite in value of production. Most of the Nevada production consists of high-value commodities that are consumed out of the State. Approximately 430 significant deposits with 20 principal commodities are present in Nevada. This abundance can be attributed to the numerous and diverse geologic processes that have been operative. Seven major modes of origin have been identified: hydrothermal activity, sedimentation, combined hydrothermal activity-sedimentation, evaporative precipitation, brine formation, extrusion of igneous rocks, and alteration by ground water. The hydrothermal type accounted for 39 percent of the deposits, the combined hydrothermal-sedimentary type for 28 percent, and the sedimentary type for 13 percent. Nevada diatomite production is about 200,000 short tons/year valued at 30 million dollars. In 1984 three companies operated in Nevada producing diatomite from six open pits and processing it at four plants - one plant producing filter-grade materials and the others adsorbents and fillers. The diatomite occurs in about 60 areas, almost all in the western one-third of the State. The diatomites were deposited in long-lasting, fresh-water lakes in topographically closed valleys formed by basin-and-range faulting. About 85 percent of the barite mined in the United States is produced in Nevada. In 1981 the high point of production,-2.5 million short tons of bedded barite was produced from about 30 open-pit mines. About 120 significant bedded-barite deposits are known in Nevada; 38 of these have had past production of more than 25,000 short tons. The deposits are associated with marine siliceous rocks of Cambrian through Devonian age and occur in a zone about 300 miles long and 60 miles wide. Abundant evidence supports the theory that the bedded barite is of exhalative sedimentary origin.

The MineSight Schedule Optimizer (MSSO) is a new production scheduling tool developed by Mintec, Inc. using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) techniques. This tool was developed to solve the short- and medium-term schedule problems for surface and underground mining operations that involve multiple mining areas, multiple processes, multiple destinations and blending requirements. MSSO finds the optimum schedule in each period that achieves the objective while satisfying comprehensive product quality and quantity requirements as well as physical and technical constraints. Using the MineSight Planning Database (MSPD) as a central data hub, MSSO seamlessly works with MineSight 3-D (MS3D) block models and third-party data, MineSight Interactive Planner (MSIP), MineSight Haulage (MSHaulage) and MineSight Activity Planner (MSAP) to prepare data, formulate MILP models, calculate, report, fine-tune, save and visualize schedules. This paper presents the features and capabilities of MSSO. A case study is also given to demonstrate the applications of this new tool.
