Diesel powered equipment has been operated in underground coal fir mare than 50 years. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), there are approximately 3,000 diesel units operating in underground coal mines in the United States. This number is expected to reach 5,000 diesel units in 250 coal mines by the year 2000. Also, there are approximately 5,000 diesel units operating in metal/nonmetal mines such as trine, potash and salt mines: and more than 3,000 diesel units operating in Canada. This increased popularity of diesel powered equipment over trolley wire, electric trailing cable or battery powered equipment is because of improved safety, greater mobility, higher productivity and increased power of diesel equipment. The operation if diesel powered equipment is not without challenges. Diesel engines generate exhaust emissions, in particular carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and diesel particulate matter that must be maintained at safe levels. The chief method to control ambient exposure has been dilution by ventilation. A new concept to ensure continued safe ambient emissions levels from diesel equipment in underground mines is the EMISSIONS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM™. The program encompasses all factors that will influence diesel emissions. By ESTABLISHING low tailpipe emissions through technology, such as clean engines, clean fuel selection, exhaust aftertreatment devices and filtration of the exhaust gases via the Dry System ™, this program ensures that the baseline emissions are at their lowest technically feasible concentrations. The DST Dry System™ exhaust conditioner reduces DPM by over 98%, as demonstrated through laboratory research at the West Virginia University. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions and odor are similarly reduced. MAINTAINING these low emissions requires an expanded training program for operators and mechanics, onboard feed-back devices and a maintenance program with special focus on events and faults that can alter emissions. Finally, an on-board emissions sampling system allows the mechanic to VERIFY emissions levels and help diagnose engine faults. If the tailpipe emissions fall outside an established limit for a particular equipment, corrective actions will be initiated.

NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation), a multi-unit organization, is generating 26% of India’s total power. This power is produced from its 14 coal based stations and 7 gas based stations. NTPC is entering into the business of power-distribution, power-trading, setting up of coal mines and diversification in non-conventional energy sector as well. For achieving the goal of the country “Power for All” NTPC has taken a giant stride by entering into Hydro Power generation which is also the cheapest and the cleanest renewable source of energy. In its pursuit for excellence, 800 MW Koldam Hydro Power Project is NTPC’s first venture in hydro sector. In Koldam, hydropower potential will be harnessed by constructing a 163m high earth and rock fill dam in a narrow gorge at upstream end of Bhakra reservoir. The river diversion is envisaged through two parallel, 14m finished diameter ‘horseshoe’ tunnels of length 901m and 934m at village Kian on the right bank, where the river forms a 180° loop. The diversion tunnels are designed to accommodate a flood of 6500m3/sec, taking into account the maximum probable discharge of 200 years return period. The tunnels pass through dolomite and limestone rock formations. The excavation of tunnels was done with drill and blast method. The excavation was attempted from both inlet and outlet faces. During geological investigation a rock fault was located at the outlet area. The location of the fault was such that it was passing through the edge of the Tunnel-1portal and around 30m away from the face of the Tunnel-2 portal. The quality of the rock at Inlet was also poor. To save the portals from slips, excavation of the tunnels was planned to start after the completion of the open excavation and its support system both at inlet and outlet. The tunnel excavation at inlet was envisaged by approaching the tunnels’ portal by constructing a road through 540EL bench and meeting the inlet portals on the upstream end, which would have been ready by mid2003, only after completion of the open excavation and its support system. To save time and cost, it was felt necessary to modify the planning by starting the tunnel excavation simultaneously along with open works both at inlet and outlet. The excavation at the inlet face of the tunnels started in December 2002 after rerouting the approach road to inlet portals through haulage road on the downstream and similarly Tunnel-1 at the outlet was started in the low cover area before completion of open area works. Thus the tunnel—heading excavation was started nearly 06 months early with the change of methodology.

Ventilation survey using tracer gas measurement is one of the techniques for mine ventilation design, monitoring and investigation of movement of fresh air and contaminants. However, there has been little research into using both tracer gas monitoring and numerical simulation. In this research, tracer gas technique was used for quantitative assessment of airflows through narrow vein shrinkage stopes with various opening shapes and friction factors. SF6 was used as a tracer gas to monitor airflow through three narrow vein shrinkage stopes in order to obtain diffusion concentration curves against elapsed time. The mine ventilation simulator, MIVENA Ver.6, was used to construct the entire ventilation network of the mine to monitor airflows through the stopes. The diffusion concentration curves against elapsed time were simulated with a numerical model. The result shows that the concentration-time curve is unsymmetrical and is skewed to the front of the flow direction. From the results of history-matching between the measured and the simulated curves, volume flow rates of airways and stopes were evaluated. Importantly, the tailing effect of the concentration-time curve between the measured and simulated is greatly improved by reconstructing an equivalent airflow route to represent unused mine openings, dead end drives and other open spaces. Finally, it can be concluded that openings, dead end drives and other open spaces have no relation on flow rates, but affect the airflow quality provided from the inlet portal as shown by tracer gas diffusion characteristics.

Depletion of easily accessible coal reserves and stringent competition in coal marketing has led to the coal industries' need to more accurately assess alternate development scenarios and to develop well-conceived produc¬tion plans. This, in turn, has encouraged the active use of the computer during resource eval¬uation and mine planning. Morrison-Knudsen, (M-K) has developed proprietary software, known as "EAGLES", to support not only its own mine planning and development activities but also the mining industry in general. The EAGLES system provides complete geologic modeling, mine planning, production modeling, equipment modeling, and cost and financial modeling capabilities. In addition, EAGLES can be used for geotechnical studies, environmental assessments, and surface and groundwater hydrological evaluations. Another important tool used in today's mine development is Landsat (remote sensing). Landsat is especially useful in the evaluation of mining activities at remote mine locations and for megascale assessments of geologic structures and hydrologic regions. The use of scientific systems in the development of surface mines is being well integrated into today's mining operations and will be a major factor in the planning, development, and operation of mines in the future.

The mine development decision is made on completion of exploration to determine whether or not a mineral deposit should be developed to production and, if so, how. This involves the selection of an optimum mine development alternative from a number of technically feasible alternatives and the comparison of this optimum with those of other available investment opportunities. If the optimum is sufficiently attractive, the deposit is developed to production. The selection process is carried out within a framework of corporate objectives and resources. The mine development decision is based on the balancing of two parameters - - rate of production as reflected in plant capacity and cut-off grade. On the basis of available information and experience, detailed revenue and cost 'estimates are made for each feasible combination of plant capacity and cut-off grade. What economic evaluation techniques should be applied to these estimates to reduce each alternative to economic indicators that will enable meaningful comparisons and an informed investment decision? This is the essence of the paper. The determination of optimum plant capacity and cut-off grade has been the subject of intensive research efforts by economists and mining engineers (1-7). Their studies are based on marginal analysis and assume that, at the time of decision, certainty conditions prevail with respect to ore reserves, mining costs and mineral markets. The optimum mine development alternative is defined as that which maximizes profitability.

Environmental Considerations With significant increases in bulk coal movements through terminals, operators are under constant social and political pressure to reduce or remove environmental pollution problems incidental to their operations. To meet these requirements, both equipment manufacturers and terminal designers are endeavoring to design equipment and systems with stringent environmental controls. The most challenging environmental problems facing coal terminal designers and developers are terminal siting restrictions, dust control, and noise abatement. Terminal Siting Finding a suitable site can be a difficult problem because of public concern over coal dust or the impact of a terminal on the surrounding community or natural habitat of the area. Often the only suitable flat land available for terminal development is on a tidal estuary or salt water marsh with great environmental value. In many cases a period of four to six years of full environmental and social assessment has been needed. A recent example of such difficulties is the expansion at Roberts Bank, British Columbia, where environmental impact assessment studies and their public review took almost six years from initial expansion applications until the time of approval. Dust Control Modern coal terminal dust control techniques usually consist of water sprays at strategic locations to suppress dust. The application points include rail car or barge dumper, main conveyor transfers, perimeter sprays around stockpiles, stacker/reclaimer, ship-loader transfers, and loading spout. The water sprays may include a chemical wetting agent or surfactant to reduce the water requirement and increase effectiveness. Recently there have been advances with development of effective micro foam agglomerating agents. In these systems, a micro foam with very small bubble sizes is sprayed into the coal stream. The foam fills the interstices between coal particles and wets the coal fines. These systems have proven to be very effective and usually one application before stockpiling and one upon reclaiming will markedly reduce the coal dusting. Stockpile perimeter sprays can be operated either manually or at the sophisticated terminal, actuated by a computerized control system that senses key environmental conditions such as humidity, precipitation, and wind velocity. Most modern terminals collect the drainage from the stockpile area, remove the solids in settling basins, then recirculate the water to reduce water requirements and effluents from the site. Dusting of long-term storage stockpiles can be reduced by spraying the piles with chemical resin or latex binding compounds to seal the surface. These compounds also can minimize erosion of the pile by rainfall. Dust collection with air evacuation systems and cyclone or wet scrubbers can be used at key areas such as rail car dumpers, main conveyor transfers, and ship-loader spouts. The trend in dust control is away from dust collection since most dust collectors are high maintenance items requiring good operator supervision and servicing. Coal handling conveyors are usually open and uncovered. However, in areas requiring special attention they may be covered or even completely enclosed. Dust generation from terminal roads is often a significant amount of the total dust emitted from a terminal. To reduce this dusting, roadways where traffic is heavy can be paved or sprayed by water trucks. Speed limits can be enforced and use of tracked mobile equipment for stockpile handling rather than rubber-tired loaders is encouraged by authorities. Noise Abatement Terminals located close to residential areas are often faced with noise control problems. Noise can be one of the most difficult environmental problems to solve. Usually, use of electrically-powered equipment is encouraged to reduce noise levels. Rail car dumper houses can be totally enclosed to reduce both dust and noise emissions. High-pressure roll mill comminution of heterogeneous multicomponent feeds was simulated with artificial limestone-quartzite mixtures using a piston-die press. The influence of heterogeneous interactions between components of the mixture on grinding path, energy utilization and energy split have been examined. Primary fractures are governed by differential fracture strength and attrition resistance of the components at heterogeneous contacts; subsequent secondary and tertiary fracture events are governed by coarse-fine interactions in the particle-bed. The weaker component is preferentially ground out of the feed size fraction and concentrates in the fines. Energy split among the components in the mixture is a function of their relative fracture strengths. It doubles for limestone and decreases by a factor of 5 for quartzite over the entire range of the mixing ratio.

Everybody has an opinion what the quality of a grinding mill head casting should be, yet extremely few take the time, or get the opportunity, to compare their opinions against fitness-for-purpose data. The real question is not how flawless the casting should/could be, but rather how long will ?this? casting survive in operation. To validate an opinion on this topic one needs either extensive historical data, or comprehensive experimental data, or preferably, a combination of both. The same data can also be used to establish the conservativeness, or lack thereof, of analytical prediction methods.

Top down constructed large diameter (up to 90 m [300 ft]) shaft design and constructability issues present an interesting suite of challenges and opportunities highlighted in this paper. The study covers 2D and 3D finite element models used to: analyze various failure modes, evaluate the shaft liner and internal structures? response to seismic loading, assist in segment design, and assess final structural design tradeoffs. Efforts to achieve economic advantage over conventional heavy civil practices have prompted innovative solutions for ring and segment design, ring build assembly, and annulus backfill grouting. Intended for soft ground conditions, relationships between soil parameters and structure design are also explored.

Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource. However, its use is limited because of the nature and amount of associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, trace elements, and moisture. The moderate-to high- sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern as current and newer, potentially more stringent, regulations require reduction in sulfur oxide emissions. Release of particulates, NOx, and other pollutants during the coal-use cycle is also of concern. The current practice of controlling sulfur oxide emissions in the major steps of the coal- use cycle is limited mainly to coal preparation by physical beneficiation and, to a smaller extent, to post-utilization cleanup (flue gas desulfurization). Approximately two-thirds of the coal from states east of the Mississippi river is physically cleaned, whereas only 15% to 20% of the operating boilers in the utility industry are equipped with scrubbers to desulfurize the flue gas (Henzel, 1988). Physical beneficiation methods can be very effective in removing mineral matter, including pyritic sulfur, from coal. These processes take advantage of the differences in physical proper- ties between coal and mineral matter to achieve the separation. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about a 50-mm (2-inch) top size. It is then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine sizes. Crushing the coal liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including a portion of the sulfur that is not chemically bound to the coal. The per- centage of impurities freed from the coal matrix generally increases as the coal particle size decreases. The coarse- and intermediate-sized coals are typically subjected to a cleaning pro- cess based on differences in specific gravity between coal particles and the associated impurities. Such cleaning processes used include jigs, dense-medium baths, cyclone systems, and concentrating tables. The fine-sized (typically less than 0.5-mm) coal, if beneficiated, is typically cleaned using a froth flotation technique based on the differences in surface proper- ties between coal and its associated impurities. At fine sizes, greater cleaning potential exists because a greater portion of the impurities is released from the coal matrix. However, this potential is not fully realized owing to inefficiencies in separating fine particles using state- of-the-art flotation technology. Overall, current commercial coal preparation processes are estimated to remove up to 60% of the ash and 10% to 30% of the sulfur, depending on the coal characteristics, with product weight recoveries rang- ing from about 60% to 90% and thermal recoveries of about 85% to 98% (Versar, 1985; Science Applications International Corporation, 1987; Hoffman- Muntner Corporation, 1978). For many U.S. coals, grinding to sizes finer than those used in current coal preparation plants is required to liberate most of the physically bound impurities from the coal matrix. As noted, conventional coal-cleaning methods are not very effective at these fine sizes. Accordingly, the expanded use of domestic coal requires the development of advanced coal cleaning technologies that can provide economic performance while reducing environmental impacts. Program Goals and Objectives The overall goal of the U.S. Department of Energy (D0E)'s Coal Preparation Program is to provide the scientific and engineering knowledge base that industry can utilize to produce economically competitive and environmentally acceptable clean-coal products for introduction as market conditions warrant. The coal preparation process(es) should remove undesirable components from coal and improve its handling characteristics, thus making the product coal technically, as well as economically, viable as a competitor with petroleum-derived fuels and natural gas, and with alternative environmental control technologies. The coal preparation process must be applicable to a wide variety of bituminous and low-rank coals. The cleaning process should reduce the variability among clean-coal products from various raw coals, thus significantly increasing the range of potential end uses for each raw coal. Rhenish lignite will continue to play an indispensible role in the energy mix of the German Federal Republic for a long time to come. The use of lignite for electricity generation, upgrading and, if necessary, as a raw material is geared to the long term. The holistic management of opencast mines underpinned by approval law in the long term and a stronger focus on man, the environment and nature contribute to the acceptance of the mines by the local population. The same is true of state-of-the-art lignite uses: as regards their operational flexibility, lignite-fired power plants are ideal partners for the expansion of renewables. It is along these lines that RWE is continuing its power plant renewal programme as planned. With a view to that which will be conceivable the day after tomorrow, RWE is researching future technologies today in order to meet objectives such as security of supply, profitability and environmental compatibility to the same extent in the long term. Another important contribution to acceptance is public transparency and communications as means to support approval procedures and the implementation of measures in all areas related to lignite mining and utilization.

Hydrometallurgy has a well-known and established role in the production of manganese metal (1) and manganese compounds, including battery grade manganese dioxide (2). Also, several leaching processes have been developed and applied at various times for the recovery of manganese from low grade ores (3). Recently, interest in the hydrometallurgy of manganese has been stimulated by the problems presented in the processing of sea nodules (4). Fumes and dusts from the ferro-manganese furnaces also offer a potential field for the application of manganese leaching techniques (5). In treating low grade manganese ores a major requirement of the leaching process is that it should dissolve manganese from a mixture of manganese and iron oxides. The most selective reagent for this purpose is ammonium carbamate applied after preliminary pyrometallurgical reduction of the ore (6). Since soluble carbamate complexes of the postulated type (7) are formed by both manganous and ferrous, but by neither manganic nor ferric, ions, selectivety of manganese leaching is achieved by control of the reduction operation to yield, essentially MnO and Fe304? A potential improvement to this two step process would be to simultaneously reduce and selectively leach the manganese in one hydrometallurgical operation. This possibility has been experimentally studied and the results are described below. An industrial engineering and computer simulation study was conducted on reclamation operations to evaluate the possibility of integrating mining and reclamation operations, and to evaluate the factors which influence the production potential of scrapers. The study was done in a southern Illinois strip coal mine producing approximately 2.27 M metric tons (2.5 million short tons) of clean coal annually. The main outcomes of this study are (a) it is possible to reduce reclamation cost about 20-25 percent by integrating reclamation and mining operations, (b) haul distance has the most significant effect on scraper production, (c) push-pull is the best mode of operation for wheel scrapers for topsoil/subsoil removal, and (d) historical data obtained from the mine for one year show that average dozer productivity in rock grading is about 60 percent lower than the expected production; similar data for scraper is about 25 percent less.

This is a description of the efforts of a research project intended to demonstrate methods of alleviating pollution from coal mine refuse piles and slurry lagoons. These are mainly derelict barren sites. Some are burning and some are vulnerable to wind erosion which causes air pollution. Some occupy valuable land near metropolitan areas. They are an integral part of the landscape of the Appalachian and Midwestern Coal Fields. They are important in the light of growing civic awareness of the great general problem of waste disposal and environmental improvement. In the V-shaped valleys of the Pocahontas Region, they continue to be piled higher and higher. In flatter topography, they tend to form broad, flat ridges. Some contain more metal forms than others and some have a minimum of metal, but weather to a fine talc, which chokes streams with a fine particle suspension. Most are burning or have burned, but burning or weathering, most all are sources of pollution to the atmosphere and to adjacent waterways. This demonstration project is being carried out at an abandoned mine near the town of Du Quoin in southern Illinois. It is jointly sponsored by the Truax-Traer Division of Consolidation Coal Company and by the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration of the Department of the Interior. The site area is a refuse pile and slurry lagoon, each of fifty acres. It is hoped that basic data from this study will be generally applicable to other sites and will provide a basis for rational and efficient engineering design of future reclamation projects. Most refuse piles have extremely long term capabilities to produce highly potent acidogenic oxidation products typifying the more serious aspects of acid mine drainage contamination. Numerous sites remain where the abandoned mine no longer discharges acid waters, but its associated refuse pile continues to generate significant quantities of acid and other oxidation products even after many years.

Topaz is a fluorine-bearing aluminosilicate mineral of the kyanite-sillimanite group. The formula has been given as Al2SiO4(F,OH)2, [Al(F, OH)]2SiO4, or 2Al2O3?2Al(F, OH)3SiO2. Topaz is generally considered a semiprecious-to-precious gem mineral, but it is a fairly common minor constituent of granites. In 1937 the U.s. Geological Survey reported an occurrence of massive topaz in the 3 Brewer gold mine, Chesterfield County, S.C. Over the next 8 years considerable research was done on topaz to establish its properties and to determine possible end uses The first reported shipment of ore was in 1939 Peak production was reached in 194412, and output then began declining until the mine closed in 194913? During World War II topaz was used in refractories, as a flux in steel mills, and in the manufacture of borosilicate glass 14. The main advantage of using topaz over kyanite and sillimanite in refractory use was that calcined topaz converted to over 95 percent mullite (3A1203 .2Si02) while calcined kyanite or sillimanite contained only 88 percent mullite15. However, a major draw-back to utilization of topaz is the evolution of fluorides during calcination. In 1973 the Geological Survey reported that topaz occurred in probable commercial quantities in at least two domestic locationsl6: the Brewer area of South Carolina and a location in Colorado. The literature also indicated that progress had been made in controlling fluorine-bearing fumes. This research has progressed to the state where valuable fluorine compounds are being recovered on a commercial scale 17. Thus, a major obstacle to utilization of topaz appears to have been resolved. The Bureau of Mines under its program of advancing minerals technology initiated a project to study techniques for the concentration of topaz from disseminated materials. The objective of the study was to determine those techniques that would be used to produce topaz concentrates that could be utilized as a source of fluorine and mullite.

In spite of the progress made by geostatistical theory over the years, evaluation of low grade open pit gold deposits continues to be challenging. Many Carlin type deposits are modelled from exploration drilling spaced on 10C foot centers. From these drill holes, 50 by 50 by 20 foot blocks containing about 4000 tons of material are estimated. The block size is a compromise between being large enough for a good geostatistical estimation and being small enough for practical pit limit analysis and mine planning. Most of these gold deposits are highly variable and include ore and waste zones that are too small to be properly defined from exploration drilling information. Because of this, selective mining is controlled by sampling closely spaced blast holes where the density can be as high as 50 blast holes per exploration drill hole intercept. Figure 1 illustrates an example of the ore/waste contact definition before and after blast hole sampling. With exploration information only, a tentative ore/waste contact can be drawn between the exploration blocks.

This paper quantifies in universal units (energy units), the annual decrease in the mineral endowment of the planet. This is done for some important extracted non-fuel minerals, namely aluminium, cobalt, chromium, copper, gold, lead, uranium and zinc and is compared with the depletion figures of conventional fossil fuels. The results of this study reveal that each year, the decrease of the global non-fuel mineral bonus provided by Nature is 2 to 3 orders of magnitude greater than the loss associated to the burning of fossil fuels. Particularly for 2008, the depletion in mineral wealth of the studied commodities was about 20 times greater than that of fossil fuels. The assessment methodology is based on the Second Law of Thermodynamics. It quantifies the useful energy (exergy) required to concentrate a mineral from a completely dispersed state in the crust, to the conditions of composition and concentration found in the mines. Exergy can be a useful measure for quantifying the mineral depletion caused by man, as it takes into account the main physical features that make minerals valuable: composition and concentration. This analysis enhances and puts numbers to the importance and necessity of material reuse and recycling.

FUNCTIONS OF RAIL HAULAGE SYSTEMS The principal application of rail haulage in under¬ground mining is in the movement of ore or coal pro¬duction from near the mining areas out to a processing plant. In some cases, such production haulage may end at a shaft pocket or slope belt conveyor transfer station, depending on the type of mine and the geo¬logical placement of the mineral being mined. Main-Line Haulage The basic reasons for choosing main-line rail haul¬age are high-tonnage production per shift and long haulage distances. The choice between rail and other systems, such as belt conveyors, is not easy and requires an integrated study of many factors: tonnage, distance, grade, product size, number of producing areas, ore reserve, safety, capital cost, operational and maintenance cost, and the mining system. Projecting a main-line rail haulage system for com¬parison with other systems requires a choice of many variables which are interrelated. The project must start with consideration of the mining system, tonnages per day, distances and grades, and loading and dumping conditions. Rail mine cars of different sizes and types are studied. High tonnage demands consideration of wider track gages. A suggested minimum for metal mines is 914.4 mm (36 in.); for coal mines, 1066.8 mm (42 in.). The choice of the train size should be governed by tonnage per shift, physical factors of loading and dumping, cycle time, and the number of trains that can be operated and safely controlled. After the size of the train is determined, the type, size, and specifi¬cations of the locomotive can be selected. The loco¬motive may be trolley, battery, or diesel; selection guides are discussed elsewhere in this chapter. The advantages of rail main-line haulage are high tonnage capacity, flexibility, reliability, safety, low operational and maintenance cost, and dual usage of the system (supply haulage, for example). The dis¬advantages are high capital investment, high installation cost, the requirement for more maintenance facilities, and restriction to certain ore reserves and mine pro¬jections. Supply Haulage Supply haulage is a basic requirement of any mine, but the type and volume of supplies vary with the type of mineral being mined, the mining methods, and the size of the mine. A mine developed for rail main¬line haulage gains supply haulage through the addition of a secondary track system to extend the main line closer to the producing areas. Additional haulage equipment, generally smaller, is also added. It is neces¬sary to design into the rail system more switch bypass points and train control systems. The track system standards demanded by rail main-line haulage con¬tribute to the reliability and efficiency of the supply haulage function, whereas a supply track system to supplement other haulage systems often suffers from poorer track and installation standards. When belt conveyors are chosen for production haulage, a rail supply haulage system is often installed rather than using rubber-tired vehicles for supply haul¬age. The conditions of the seam or ore body create these items for consideration: haulage grade of more than 6% favors rubber-tired vehicles; longer haulage distances favor rail; difficulty in maintaining a smooth roadway favors rail; and movement beyond the end of a rail system generally requires rubber-tired vehicles, making a single system rather than a dual system attractive. Although operation of a supply haulage system may be concentrated on a single shift of a multiple-shift mining operation, proper planning and supervision are required if the haulage is to be efficient. Often the newer personnel at a mine are assigned to supply haul¬age which may add to the difficulty of obtaining maxi¬mum efficiency. Supply haulage by rail offers the advantages of high reliability, lower maintenance, and high efficiency over long distances. The disadvantages are less flexibility, high installation costs, and rubber-tired vehicles for use beyond the inby end of track often required. Personnel Movement The efficient and comfortable movement of the miner to and from his work area has a significant effect on his daily output. Minimizing man-trip time also becomes more and more important as hourly wages increase. Personnel are generally moved over a rail system by one of three methods: a specialized personnel carrier to which a certain number of men who work in a certain area are assigned; a combination vehicle, used to carry personnel but also capable of being used as a light supply/utility locomotive during a working shift; and man-trip cars towed by a supply locomotive. The first and second methods are used in coal mines where long distances make speed and comfort important. The third method is more common in metal mines. Equipment Movement As mining equipment technology has advanced, many mining machines and their subcomponents have grown in size. This trend requires careful planning for adding specialized carriers to handle the movement of larger equipment. Continuous miners, longwall equipment, raise borers, and ventilation equipment are examples of machines which may be difficult to move and which require special handling. The selection of the weight, speed, and operating characteristics of supply locomotives used to move equipment is important. Larger mines may often justify a special group of loco¬motives for this application.

To properly analyze and apply mining equipment, a systematic, current, inclusive, and simple classification scheme is required. This paper provides such a classification for Roadheaders. This Roadheader classification is based on factors, such as the rock cutterhead, the boom type, and the chassis configuration. It first assigns Roadheaders as an equipment type within the larger group of Integrated Excavators. The Roadheader type is then delineated into the following subtypes: the standard, the extended boom, the tunnelers, and the miscellaneous. Next, these subtypes are devolved into kinds, and finally variants and attachments are considered. To resolve inconsistencies in characterizing the Roadheader, cross-referencing is employed within the classification scheme.

A conference on coalbed and coal mine methane was held March 27 and 28, 2000, in Denver, CO. The conference, organized by the Strategic Resource Institute, was attended by leaders in the coal mining and gas energy industry. The conference focused on the recovery of methane from coal beds as an energy resource and the removal and utilization of coal-mine methane (CMM) related to underground coal mining. The two-day conference discussed methane resources around the world, methods of recovery, methane markets, underground coal mining, health and safety issues and environmental issues related to methane. The consensus among the presenters is that the future looks promising for coal bed methane (CBM) and CMM.
