Introduction Typical dragline rigging includes several sets of ropes: hoist ropes, drag ropes, dump ropes and boom suspension ropes. The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result, frequent rope changes are required resulting in substantial cost and productive time loss. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline efficiency, there are no common, industry accepted standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The performance of drag and hoist ropes depends on: •rope construction that should closely match requirements of the specific application, rope operating conditions and its maintenance and • correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of its operation. This paper reviews the present practice related to all these factors. Its findings are based on the wide survey of the present industrial practice. Field survey In total, 33 North American dragline applications were surveyed of which 17 were Bucyrus-Erie machines, 10 were Marion and six were Page (now P&H). Most of the draglines were stripping overburden in coal mines, but the survey also included some unique applications such as phosphate mining in Florida and oil sand mining in Alberta. Hoist drive power of the surveyed machines varied from 300 to 7775 kW (400 to 10,400 hp). Drag drives varied from 300 to 5815 kW (400 to 7800 hp). Boom lengths varied from 37 to 110 m (120 to 360 ft). Bucket sizes varied from 5 to 96 m3 (6 to 115 cu yd). The hoist and drag ropes installed on the surveyed machines were supplied by 10 rope manufacturers and differed widely in type and construction. Most common rope strand constructions included standard strands, Seale, Warrington, Warrington-Seale and Filler-Seale. Results of the survey [ ] Working conditions Working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are quite different. The first cope primarily with bending on rope drums, point sheaves and deflection sheaves, and with tension force imposed by the bucket and its load. The drag ropes are exposed to severe abrasion at the pit crest, and to severe bending and crushing at fairleads, all while coping with tension forces imposed by resistance of the bucket to dragging. Bending of drag ropes at house rollers and at rope drums is of minor importance for their performance. Differences in working conditions result in different wear patterns, which make it feasible to install discarded hoist ropes to further serve as drag ropes. The hoist ropes wear primarily due to fatigue breaks of wires, while the drag ropes are subject to severe abrasion of outside wires, rope deformation and internal wire-strand breaking. The last is often indicated by the reduction of rope diameter. The summary of working conditions for the surveyed draglines is shown in Table 1. For simplicity, Table 1 does not include the data on rope bending at the fairleads, nor at the deflection rollers and house rollers. Similarly, Table 1 does not include the data on drag rope bending (other than that on the rope drum), as its influence on rope life is insignificant in view of severe abrasion and internal wear taking place elsewhere. However, the safety factors of the dragline ropes are lower, which requires them to carry relatively large tension forces. Expansion of the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant requires interconnection of three operating pump stations using only two existing 10-ft diameter shafts for access. These two existing shafts require additional support to allow access 130 feet below grade. Interconnection requires rehabilitation of an existing tunnel, excavation of two new tunnels, and abandonment of additional existing tunnels. Construction has discovered unexpected conditions at all three connection points. The CMAR contracting method has effectively accommodated project team discussion, value engineering decisions, and allocation of risk during preconstruction and construction phase services.

The Red River is located within the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range in northern New Mexico. An approximate 12-mile segment of the river from the town of Red River to the village of Questa (Questa) includes several hydrothermal alteration zones. Alteration ?scars? formed as a result of rapid chemical weathering and physical erosion of pyrite-rich hydrothermally altered rocks. Storm water runoff from the scar drainages contributes metal-laden, acidic water to the river and creates a visible plume of discolored water in the river. Acidic runoff reduces the river pH from 7 to the mid 3s for at least 2 hours during large storms and the low pH water continues downstream. Runoff from scar drainages increases some metal concentrations in the river from below chronic ecological criteria to as much as two orders of magnitude greater than acute ecological criteria, and results in acutely toxic conditions for macro-invertebrates. A general improvement in the river?s water quality occurs downstream due to dilution from tributary inflow from non-mineralized watersheds, the natural buffering capacity of the river, and storm water controls at the Chevron Mining Inc. During the past five years, Rexnord has developed, tested and introduced the Nordberg Omnicone Crusher to the industry. When the Symons brothers invented the cone crusher over 60 years ago, they employed the principle wherein the length of the crushing stroke was related to the free fall of material by gravity. This permitted the material being crushed to fall vertically in the crushing chamber; and in effect, caused the particles to be crushed in a series of steps or stages as the particles got smaller due to the crushing action. This also helps to reduce the rate of wear of the liners since the sliding motion of the particles is minimized.

Humic-acid-rich deposits exist in Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, New York, North Dakota, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas, and Wyoming (Burdick, 1965) and in New Mexico (Shomaker and Hiss, 1974). New Mexico humic deposits are associated with coal in the northwestern part of the state where humate and weathered coal are presently mined. Discussion of the humic -acid industry in New Mexico requires an understanding of complex terminology and coal geology. TERMINOLOGY Humic material is not a pure substance so an ambiguous and complex terminology is in use by geologists, chemists, soil scientists, agronomists, and producers. Material mined for its humic-acid content is an extremely variable mixture of base-soluble humic, fulvic, and ulvic acids and their salts, formed during partial or complete decay of organic matter. This decay releases a high-molecular-weight organic material which is darkly colored, partly colloidal, and weakly acidic.

For many decades, a potash operation in Saskatchewan, Canada, has maintained storage impoundments for mine tailings and process-related mine water. The mine water is a concentrated aqueous solution, with most of the total dissolved solids (TDS) consisting of sodium and chloride. Although the facility has a system of slurry walls and collection/ diversion ditches, the mines monitor the surface water and groundwater around the tailings storage facilities (TSFs) for releases. Groundwater on the western side of the facility has been measured as having concentrations of TDS, magnesium, sodium, chloride and sulfate above provincial drinking water quality objectives. In addition, electromagnetic surveys have shown high electrical conductivity in that area. For these reasons, studies were undertaken to investigate the extent of the high TDS concentrations in groundwater and whether the elevated concentrations were related to the TSF. Chloride and TDS concentrations in groundwater monitoring wells were used to interpret the transport of high-TDS mine water moving along three interpreted zones of elevated TDS west from the facility (Fig. 1). The zones of elevated TDS concentrations corresponded to the areas of high conductivity identified by the geophysical surveys. These results suggested that mine water could be emanating from the TSF and potentially require remediation. However, the interpreted orientation of the high-TDS groundwater and apparent flow paths were perpendicular to the direction of groundwater flow in the area. The fundamental conflicts in these interpretations led to a reexamination of the conceptual site model for the distribution of potential mine water releases. Although the data examination and visualization made it clear that TDS concentration alone was not a reliable indicator of mine water release, there was still concern about elevated chloride concentrations. To further evaluate high TDS and chloride concentrations, several background area wells were installed northwest of the facility, beyond where mine water impacts could occur (Fig, 2). The background wells had highly variable chemical compositions. One of the wells had an elevated TDS concentration with magnesium and sulfate as the dominant ions with chloride concentrations above drinking water objectives, similar to the high-TDS wells west of the facility. The results of the background groundwater investigation (major ion chemistry) were supported by the scientific literature on prairie sloughs throughout the North American Great Plains. These sloughs are small, shallow and sometimes seasonal wetlands found throughout the region. Seasonal cycling in precipitation/ runoff and evapotranspiration result in accumulation and mobilization of salts, especially sulfate-bearing phases such as gypsum. The long-term dynamics of these features, which are common on the property west of the facility, likely control the TDS concentrations and compositions in shallow groundwater rather than mine water migration from the site. The conclusions from this investigation led to a better understanding of the lateral distribution of potential TSF-related impacts versus background groundwater chemistry. Presentation of the data, including the visualizations of different water compositions, to the provincial regulatory agency representative allowed the facility to propose an optimized annual groundwater monitoring plan with reduced sampling frequency and annual sample count. This study underscores the importance of critical evaluation and comparison of various data types, including background levels, from a particular site and the iterative approach to developing and supporting robust conceptual site models for optimizing project outcomes.

The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations) even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of current and future pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners? Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic, and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mines seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble in combination with a conventional mine seal so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed, and attenuated, so the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a ?Passive Mine Blast Attenuator? (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals. The object of underground excavation--apart from mining-- is to create an opening to serve as a part of some useful structure. The value of the opening lies in its conformity to the design configuration and its stability during the planned life of the structure. The wire saw could be used to excavate openings of high value at a cost competitive with present methods. First, a discussion of present methods will be used to explain where wire sawing fits in and how it should be applied. PRESENT EXCAVATION METHODS Tunnel Boring A recent advance in tunneling technology is the use of mechanical boring machines. There are many ways that a boring machine can reduce the cost of a tunnel or increase its value. I will mention a few of the advantages that have been demonstrated in tunneling projects. A tunnel can be bored without overbreak, allowing concrete lining to be poured to the design thickness without waste. Boring creates a minimum of disturbance to the tunnel wall, preserving the natural strength of the rock and reducing the amount of support which must be installed to maintain stability. A boring machine maintains the tunnel at its full dimensions and proper shape, and it leaves no rock projecting from the wall which must be trimmed off. The use of boring machines is presently limited to openings of uniform cross section and great length. If the previously mentioned attributes of mechanical boring could be applied to excavation of a wide variety of chambers and passages, then a corresponding decrease in cost and gain in value would be possible for chambers.

Open-source technology to support Industry 4.0 has become the target of academic research in many sectors. This study reviews the trends of open-source technology, its forms, and some industrial applications. As a case study of the use of open-source hardware and software in the mining industry, this study proposed a low-cost environmental monitoring system for nonmetallic underground mines to support mine safety and occupational health. The system was developed using open-source hardware, Arduino and 3D printer, to design the monitoring device, and open-source software, MIT App Inventor, to develop an Android application for smartphones to enable remote communication with the system. Field experiments were conducted at an underground tunnel and a nonmetallic underground mining site to assess the performance of the system in mobile and static modes, respectively. Although a few limitations related to the precision of the low-cost dust and gas sensors exist, the findings of the experiments show that the mining industry can benefit from open-source technology deployment when considering cost factors.

A coal's size distribution clay content and moisture content can affect its handling behavior. But the combined effects of these properties and the effects of other properties are not known. Research underway at CQ Inc.'s (formerly EPRI's) Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) and at Iowa State University (ISU) will answer these questions as part of a four year project to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals. This paper will present preliminary data from the first year of the project, which focused on obtaining data on the chemical and physical properties of carious coals and their measured handling properties. Additionally, size, ash and moisture analyses and shear test data for several coals used at one power plant will be presented along with correlations between these physical and chemical properties and the measured handling properties. These data lead to the conclusion that while moisture content is the most important variable, the amount of -44 µm (-325 mesh) coal fines is a significant factor in determining coal handling behavior.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to describe in engineering terms the singular and basic operational kinematics of all excavating and bulk handling equipment. The safe and efficient use of equipment will be fostered by enabling the engineer to conceptually duplicate the operators' "tasks" in directing and controlling it. A simple graphical and notational scheme will be introduced to define the essential gross repetitive motions. The significance of this effort includes filling a vital analytical gap at the work face, and in establishing direct communications between the engineer and equipment operator. Since all types and sizes of earth- moving equipment are covered, a major concern has been to integrate equipment specialties into d single encompassing discipline. Equipment types are closely related to the working conditions, and their selection and evaluation are also considered. The extension to human factors analysis is natural and predictable. Since human [actors are involved, the operational analysis can also be considered a catch-all for many subtle vagaries. BACKGROUND Symbolic modelling linked to a notational system will be developed and intensively used. This constitutes the "language of science," providing a shorthand method which gives immediate recognition, is fluent, explicit, reinforcing, unequivocal and provides limitless associations. Many examples of symbolic modelling exist in chemistry, physics, the military, engineering sciences and it is a major tool in mapping. Its use is so ubiquitous that it often goes unnoticed. On the other hand it must be realized that something is lost in simplifying and idealizing what is an extraordinarily complex occurrence. The components describing the basic operational kinematics of equipment include: (1) the vehicular motions as a rigid body and (2) the job-end motions focussing on excavating (Adler, 1985). These provide all of the components in the load-haul-dump sequence (L-H-D) , and will yield three dimensional expressions. Complex patterns can also be assembled from these simple elements. An existing equipment designation employed in earthmoving will be integrated into this approach (Carson, 1961). Along with the basic motions, corresponding working conditions will be noted.

Lithium bearing lepidolites from three deposits in the province of Goias in Brazil were investigated to determine whether there is a correlation between the lithium content of the mineral and the colour of lepidolite and associated tourmaline. Such a correlation can be a useful guide to field geologists for outlining high grade ore zones. It was found that mauve-pink lepidolite associated with pink tourmaline, and brownish lepidolite associated with black tourmaline have high lithium contents, but the colour of lepidolite is not due to lithium. The pink colour of lepidolite and tourmaline is likely to Mn3+, and the brownish tint of lepidolite and black colour of tourmaline to Fe3+. Lepido lites appear to be lithium-rich when the lepidolite and associated tourmaline contain relatively high amounts of Mn3+ and/or-Fe3+.

The Questa Molybdenite Mine provides a unique opportunity to study the geochemical dispersion of various hydrothermal events, utilizing drill hole analyses. Numerous post-ore factors have altered the primary ore-related geochemical dispersions to the present day configuration, e. g. dikes, faults, hydrothermal convection cells, and weathering. Due to the interaction of an andesitic volcanic pile with the silicic-alkalic generated volatiles, the geochemical haloes of the Goat Hill deposit demonstrate a marked divergence from the classic Climax-type molybdenite ore body. Certainly, however, the similarities to the Climax-type ore body are apparent as potassically-rich fluids have invaded the highly reactive country rock.

Maximizing production of oil from sandstone petroleum reservoirs is aided by use of non-damaging drilling and workover/completion fluids. Various tests, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microsccpy, petrographic microscopy, porosity and permeability are conducted on core samples. Several fluids are selected, on the basis of these results, for return permeability tests. A report is then written giving the results of all tests, potential reservoir problems, and recommended practices for exploiting the reservoir.

The Alligator Ridge Mine was discovered in 1976 by a prospector grubstaked by Amselco Exploration Inc. in eastern Nevada 116 km (72 mi.) northwest of Ely in White Pine County. The mine is operated as a 50-50 Joint Venture by BP Gold, the operator, which is a subsidiary of British Petroleum Minerals America and Nerco Inc., a subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light.

The Duval Corporation porphyry copper deposits at Copper Canyon and Copper Basin, though widely separated, form an economic unit requiring integrated exploitation. Contrasts in mineralization, host rocks, and mode of occurrence present unique mining and milling problems. Mixed oxide-sulfide ore is treated in extensive dump leaching facilities in both areas. Complex copper-gold-silver ore is treated in a 4,000 tpd mill at Copper Canyon. In both areas, hypogene metallization occurs within large aureoles of metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration related to quartz monzonite intrusions of mid-Tertiary age. Supergene processes further altered the rocks and enriched the hypogene protore. At Copper Canyon, hypogene copper and iron sulfides with gold and silver occur in fractures, as partial replacement of favorable beds, and as disseminations in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The lower part of the Pennsylvanian Battle Formation was a particularly favorable host. Metallization occurs to a lesser extent in quartz monzonite. Metal zoning is well developed. The deposits at Copper Basin consist principally of supergene copper minerals in arenites of the Cambrian Harmony Formation. Oxidation of hypogene copper and iron sulfides in tactite zones has formed at least two commercial deposits; intersections of fractures with favorable beds exerted important ore controls.

The amount of fine material (minus 60 Tyler mesh) generated during calcination and/or handling of calcined abrasive grade bauxite from Alcoa's operations at Moengo, Suriname, has recently increased relative to past production experience. Bulk samples of raw abrasive grade bauxite from three deposits in the Moengo area have been studied in order to determine the factors controlling the generation of fine material samples from the Jones IC and Tapira deposits, which generate excessive amounts of fine material, have been compared with reference samples from the Begi Gado deposit, which does not generate excessive fine material. Additional type samples of abrasive grade and marginal abrasive grade bauxite from deposits in the Moengo area which represent different bauxite textures found in the Jones IC, Jones I, and Begi Gado deposits have also been studied. Field observations in the Moengo area have indicated that abrasive grade bauxites with a dull, earthy appearance generally do not generate excessive fines. On the other hand, excessive fines are generally associated with coarsely crystalline bauxite in which the gibbsite crystals appear to sparkle in sunlight.

The ability to track miners and communicate with them while they work in underground coal mines is important during normal daily operation, and critical in emergency conditions. This was evident during recent incidents at underground coal mines worldwide. Communication with miners and the knowledge of their location is of great importance for rescue efforts and the preservation of life. Numerous technologies have been developed, adapted and deployed to meet tracking requirements of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act of 2006. Evaluating the performance of these systems has proven to be dif?cult for mine operators, system manufacturers and regulatory agencies. The MINER Act requires operators to improve accident preparedness by developing an emergency response plan speci?c to each mine. With the recent implementation of the provisions of the MINER Act of 2006, all underground coal mines in the United States are subject to the mandates of legislation concerning communication and tracking system installation. As of June 2011, 203 new or revised tracking and/or communication systems had been approved by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), with nearly 50 other systems or revisions in the approval process (MSHA, 2011). At that time, the available approved systems for underground coal mine use included these types: ? Leaky feeder communication systems. ? Fixed node-based communications and/or tracking systems. ? Wireless node-based communications and/or tracking systems. ? Medium frequency (MF) communication systems. ? Communication system peripherals. Other types of tracking systems have since been developed and some manufacturers are seeking approval for use in this application. Some of the new products include through-the-earth (TTE) systems and various radio frequency (RF) adaptations. New technologies that are currently being developed and deployed in other industrial applications should also be considered, including acoustical, optical, inertial and hybrid technologies. To date, no uniform method has been employed in the industry to effectively compare and evaluate the performance of installed systems. Neither industry operators nor regulatory agencies can accurately assess the capabilities of installed systems in the continuously changing mine environment. There is a need for a uniform evaluation method that provides the ability to assess how different systems and technologies perform in various mining applications, and whether they can satisfy the regulatory requirements.

Since first introduced, the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) has been widely accepted as a tool for geologic characterization and mine planning. This paper discusses the application of the CMRR to another practical ground-control problem: extended cuts. Extended cuts, i.e., cuts greater than 6 m (20 ft) in length, are commonly used with remote-control continuous miners. Extended cuts can greatly increase productivity, but they have been associated with a number of fatal roof-falls. When extended cuts are attempted in weak roof material, the roof may collapse before it can be bolted Until now, it has not been possible to predict where conditions may not be suitable for extended cuts. In this study, data on the CMRR and extended-cut experience were collected at 36 mines in seven of the United States. It was found that, when the CMRR was greater than 56, deep cuts were routine in nearly every case. When the CMRR was less than 37, extended cuts were almost never taken, and, when the CMRR was between 38 and 56, extended cuts were sometimes, but not always, feasible. The data also show that extended cuts are less likely to be stable if either the entry span or the depth of cover increases.

Basic process control is an integral part of most mineral processing plants. It is widely acknowledged to have helped many operations reduce costs and increase productivity and performance. The research community is very active in the development and evaluation of both model based and Al techniques for advanced control applications. Vendors and specialist consulting or engineering firms are in business to help deliver these solutions to the plant floor. It would seem that there is a good balance between business needs and technology, and that the industry should be moving steadily forward in an aggressive pursuit of plant-wide automation. However on closer examination one sees some systemic problems which are sewing to inhibit progress. One of the mist obvious manifestations is the gap which exists between the available technology and current This paper explores the control of mineral processing systems, with a particular emphasis on some of these problem areas.
