The recession that began in late 1980 has proved to be not only prolonged and severe, but in certain ways unique in its effect on the mineral industries among the periods of economic slowdown experienced in the Western world since the end of World War II. This time almost all minerals have been affected. In previous business turndowns, by contrast, some mineral sectors have with-stood economic adversity well. They experienced little or no adverse effect-thanks either to a strong secular expansion in the markets for their particular product or to specific factors that caused demand to be well maintained. For example, aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel are three metals that enjoyed extraordinary growth in applications during the years 1946-1973. These metals were little affected during the recessions that occurred in that era. Similarly, coal did not suffer a pronounced drop in sales in the 1974-75 turndown because, with the price of oil rising sharply, a switch away from oil and back to coal was clearly indicated for some energy-intensive applications. Oil itself was largely impervious to the ups and downs of the business cycle until very recently. And the precious metals, gold and silver, have often been regarded as benefiting from reduced economic activity because labor becomes more available, productivity rises, and operating costs diminish. In the current recession, however, no major mineral has escaped the broad trend. The secular growth factors that were previously so evident for aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel have disappeared, at least temporarily. The stable pricing behavior that previously characterized all three of these commodities has been replaced by extreme price weakness and apparent inability of the major producers to continue their roles as market leaders. Coal and oil both have suffered from a sharp drop in energy requirements. There are those who now anticipate a collapse of the market control over oil prices so clearly exercised by OPEC since 1973. If oil prices are no longer effectively controlled by the governments of the exporting countries, then coal prices are also certain to be affected. And the combination of high interest rates, tight money, and a change in public perceptions of precious metals put the skid under gold and silver quotations in 1981 and early 1982. Although inflation has been viewed as the scourge of most Western countries ever since the oil crises of 1973-74, prices-in constant dollars-of most minerals have not risen. On the contrary, with the exception of the precious metals and oil, for most minerals the prices that prevailed at the end of 1982 were close to the levels of the Great Depression of the 1930s in constant dollar terms. Table 1 compares prices for copper, lead, zinc, and aluminum at the end of 1982 with the average prices in 1934, stated in constant 1967 dollars. This emphasis on prices for mineral commodities reflects the fact that profits of mining enterprises vary directly with the level of prices. Manufacturing and retailing enterprises march to a different tune. They establish sales prices based on costs. Their profits tend to vary with volume. Commodities are for all practical purposes fungible, that is the advantages of known brands in marketing manufactured goods have little application in a commodity market. Thus the individual seller of minerals is unable to establish his sales prices. Except where a monopoly is present, he must sell at the going market. His option is to abstain from selling if he finds the price unremunerative. In past recessions, some mineral producers chose to do precisely that-either accumulating a substantial share of their output in inventory or, in prolonged downturns, abstaining from production. During the current recession, however, private-sector mining companies did not have the option of accumulating inventories to any great extent. Capital costs for new mineral projects or for expansion of existing facilities have escalated at an alarming rate since the early 1970s. Added to this has been the heavy cost of installing pollution control or safety equipment to comply with the regulations adopted in most industrialized countries (and particularly the United States) since 1968. The consequence has been that the financial position of most major mineral enterprises in mid-1980 was already strained. To finance increased inventories meant incurring additional funded debt at high interest costs, thus impairing the concern's credit rating. Management Choices Private-sector managements have had to face up to the alternative of either continuing to produce at an unchanged rate and marketing output at unremunerative prices or reducing output. In this research, the aim is to realistically simulate the rock material and the cutting process by controlling the grain interlocking of the numerical assembly and streamlining the calibration process while focusing on the cutting force and the failure mechanism.

The usefulness of simulation as a technique for metallurgical process design and optimization studies has been greatly extended over the last few years by the development of a number of general purpose simulation packages. The packages, or simulators, all have the common objective of presenting the mathematical models and simulation methods in a form which is readily usable by plant engineers and metallurgists. To date, most simulators have been concerned with steady state simulation, but packages capable of dynamic simulation are now becoming available. The paper outlines the essential features of versatile steady state and dynamic simulators. Typical applications are presented by considering examples of design and optimization studies. Limitation on the use of simulators are also presented.

In the wake of the collapse of the ceiling panels in the I-90 section of the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project in 2006, the long term performance of tunnels became the focus of the tunneling industry. At the time of the accident, the tunnel had been open to traffic for about 10 years. This paper will discuss design methods and considerations to improve the long term performance and durability of a tunnel. The major problems found during the inspection of several tunnels will also be presented and the causes for these problems will be discussed.

Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent upon the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features; in order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application.

Many in mining believe that the industry is slipping behind in public image, in public mineral education and, particularly, in mining's basic right to do business. It is critical to turn things around - to change the rules of the game soon - before mining loses any chance of recovery. In the industry's experience, there is a technique of project development and operation that can help gain ground on public opinion. Only recently has this technique had a name, and that is sustainable development. What is sustainable development? Sustainable development is broadly accepted and supported by the international business community. And significant thought and work has been devoted to the subject. Research into the topic was initially confusing because the definitions of sustainable development are written in terms the writer, and his or her constituency understands. To some, it refers to environmental protection. To others, it is about social responsibility. And to the developer, it is about economic benefit. Slowly a theme emerged from the research that seemed to be part of all the definitions. That theme has three parts. First, the development, whatever or wherever it is, must contribute economic value to the developer and the stakeholders of the development. Stakeholders in this context include employees, neighbors, residents of the surrounding area, citizens of the country, suppliers and all others affected by the development. Next, sustainable development must contribute environmental value. This means that at a very minimum it must be neutral and not cause irreparable damage. And last, and what is new for miners and most other businessmen, it must contribute real social value to the stakeholders. How to use the concept? With that three-part theme as a working definition, the mining industry must find ways to use that “the challenge is for an individual company to translate what sustainable development means for them. There is no one model..." Donald W. Gentry is president and chief executive officer of Polymet Mining and former professor emeritus of mining engineering at Colorado School of Mines. He added: "While simple to state, the concept is anything but simple to implement. Present trends indicate ... one wins the sustainable development argument by staking out the high ground early..." In other words, start using sustainable development principles at the beginning of the project. New ways of doing business The mining industry's challenge is to implement sus¬tainable development universally around the world. Paternalism as a way of doing business is dead and a new model of doing business is emerging. All types of businesses are learning to deal with the stakeholders of new developments. Mining cannot be an exception to these trends. To understand how the international mining business came to sustainable development, it is useful to look back a few years. For many North American mining engineers, there were few opportunities for foreign assignments from the 1960s to the 1980s. The phosphate fertilizer industry is a large activity in Brazil because the soil has a phosphorous deficiency. The phosphoric acid that is produced is extensively used in the production of fertilizer. It is produced by reacting phosphate carbonaceous rock with sulfuric acid, generating phosphogypsum as a by-product. In 1991, there were about 29 million tons of phosphogypsum stored in Brazil. This has increased to an estimated 280 million tons in 2001. While the phosphogypsum is used in the cement industry and also in agriculture, the quantity used is much less than the production rate, and the stockpiles are still increasing. The radioactivity of this waste may not allow its continued use as a construction material and some other uses. However, Brazilian phosphogypsum contains a smaller quantity of radioactive materials than is reported for phosphate rocks from other countries. One important reason is the geological origin of the Brazilian apatite. All the large deposits being currently mined are igneous, not sedimentary, as is the majority of the phosphate rock produced around the world. An extensive study is being conducted to characterize the phosphogypsum generated in two production facilities in Sao Paulo state to develop safe uses for this waste and determine the environmental impact caused by the present method of phosphogypsum disposal.

The worldwide production of iron ores was approximately 880 million metric tons in 1975. This level is the result of an annual growth rate of nearly four percent during the period 1967 to the present. The high growth rate was particularly significant in that two relatively severe worldwide recessions occurred in 1971 and 1975. The current upturn in world economic growth will probably allow future annual iron ore production growth rates in excess of the four percent figure, and, in fact, the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) has predicted that a five percent rate should be realized through 1985. The IISI figures would indicate a 1.4 billion metric tons per year output by 1985 or an increase in current production levels of around 500 million metric tons per year (MMTA)1. Even the more conservative four percent growth rate prediction from historical data would provide an 2 increase over current figures of nearly 350 MA by 1985. A large portion of world iron ore production is being provided by large resource-rich countries with relatively new industrial bases. These countries are typified by heavy export of raw materials such as iron ore and ore products and a large capital investment in the facilities to recover these raw materials. Brazil and Australia are typical of such countries and, indeed, their production of iron ore in the period 1967 to 1973 increased at annual rates of 17 to 30 percent, respectively, The continual reassessment of resources in these and other major iron ore exporting countries such as Venezuela and Liberia would indicate chat these high growth rates may continue for some years to come to meet anticipated world demand for raw steel production.

Gentlemen, the title of my paper is Surface Mining An Interim Land Use. Surface mining has become one of the major controversies of our time. This has happened in spite of the fact that all surface mining to date has involved only 6 million acres out of a total of 2300 million or approximately one-fourth of one percent of the total land area in the United States. I'm not going to dwell on whether peoples' perspectives are out of focus in light of the area involved, the energy crisis, national security, or the international balance of payments problem. While these things are all critically important, it is not the function of this paper to relate to them. Maybe the amount of attention attracted to surface mining is out of proportion to a lot of other things, but I don't feel that we should use that as a basis for procrastination. However, let me categorically state that anything that affects the surface of the earth is a form of land use --- be it an interstate highway, a power plant site, a golf course, a corn field, a strip mine, or the plot of ground on which your house is located.

The ability to optimise a concentrator from mill feed to final products requires a simulator which integrates comminution, classification and separation modelling. In order to model this range of processes, such a simulator must handle a variety of information about the ore. The AMIRA P9 project has developed a whole-of-concentrator simulation capability which brings together a texture-based model of mineral liberation, quantitative X-ray micro-tomography analysis to measure the inputs required by this model, and a multi-component simulator software framework. In the context of this approach, the term ?multi-component? implies the ability of the simulation to handle many particle properties simultaneously; for example size, composition, density, floatability etc. The simulation software framework provides the means to manage the flow of data around a circuit flowsheet, allowing each process model to access the information relevant to that particular model. A case study based on plant data from a gold-bearing pyrite concentrator is used to demonstrate the capabilities of the multi-component approach in simulating circuits which contain comminution and separation processes.

INTRODUCTION The development during 1979 of a relatively small, but high grade (10,000 tonnes uranium at an average grade of 2 per cent), uranium ore body at Nabarlek in the Northern Territory, Australia offered an excellent opportunity to obtain detailed radiation data for an open cut mine operating during the dry season. The ore body (Queensland Mines Limited-1979), which was completely extracted in a period of four and a half months, consisted of a vein type deposit dipping at 30 to 45 degrees and contained a central core of pitchblende in massive and irregular pods, surrounded by lower grade fine grained disseminated pitchblende. Mineralisation extended from the surface to a depth of 72 metres over a length of 230 metres with an average but variable thickness of 1D metres. Ore near the surface had been heavily weathered and complex secondary minerals were formed which had dispersed from the main vein. Mining was carried out with large earth moving equipment. Overburden and weathered surface ore were removed initially with scrapers. At greater depths bulldozers were used to rip and assemble ore and rock at each level, and these were removed by large trucks to the ore and waste rock stockpiles. Where necessary, blasting took place during shift changes each evening. Mining was essentially continuous with two ten hour alternating shifts working for thirteen days out of fourteen. At the completion of mining a relatively small excavation (335m x 185m x 70m) remained, and this will serve as a tailings repository during the milling phase. FIELD MEASUREMENTS The inhalation of radon daughters, arising from the radioactive decay of radon gas is well established (Archer et. al. 1973) as a potential hazard in the uranium mining industry. Control over radon and its daughters to ensure that recommended exposure limits are not exceeded is achieved by providing adequate ventilation, and under normal circumstances natural ventilation from an open pit should be sufficient. However, during the dry season it is not uncommon for stable atmospheric conditions, with little horizontal air movement, to develop - particularly at night - and significant radon daughter concentrations may accumulate. Throughout the entire mining period measurements were therefore made of radon and radon daughter levels at representative locations within the pit and on the ore stockpile as it developed. Initially these measurements were carried out manually, using the Rolle method for radon daughters, (Rolle 1972) and .scintillation cells (Lucas 1964) or a two filter tube for the determination of radon (Thomas 1970). For the latter half of the period however, a continuous recording instrument, developed within the Laboratory was used to provide a detailed record of radon daughter levels within the pit. At the same time, continuous readings of wind speed and direction, and vertical temperature gradient between 10 and 3D metres were recorded on a 30 metre meteorological tower, situated 800 metres from the pit. Radon Emanation Rates It is evident that radon and radon daughter concentrations depend on the grade, or more particularly, on the surface radon emanation rate of the ore which is exposed. Accordingly, as the mine progressed, detailed measurements were made of both of these quantities. The surface emanation rate of radon was determined for each ore bench as it was exposed by placing an extended array of canisters, filled with freshly degassed activated charcoal, face down on the ore for a known time. These canisters, which had previously been calibrated in the Laboratory, adsorb radon with high efficiency, and the total radon adsorbed is measured after retrieval by detecting the gamma rays from the trapped radon daughters (Countess 1977). At the same time, as each canister was placed in position, a measurement of the local ore grade was made for each location. This was achieved with a calibrated sodium iodide scintillation detector, adjusted to detect the 609 keV gamma ray from the isotope 2148i, a decay product of radium. Finally, measurements were made of the radiation field 1 metre above the surface, with a gamma ray survey meter, which was calibrated in the Laboratory. The relationship between the scintillator count rate and ore grade was determined by comparing the scintillator output with the gamma monitor, and relating the latter measurements to ore grade (Thomson and Wilson 1980). It was observed that while emanation rates and ore grades varied widely, the ratio of emanation rate to ore grade was in general fairly stable. A plot of this ratio is presented as a function of depth below the original surface in Figure 1. For most observations the ratio is constant at a value of 80 Bq m-2 s -1 per unit ore grade, where ore grade is expressed as percentage of U308. At the surface however, where the ore was weathered, the ratio was about a factor of three higher, and at two particular depths, where high grade pitchblende was being removed, it was very much lower. This was not unexpected as earlier Laboratory studies of drill core samples from Nabarlek had indicated that the emanation coefficient (the fraction of radon produced within the ore which escapes from the mineral particles) decreases with increasing ore grade.

ME?s Arizona Conference was held at the Hilton El Conquistador resort in Tucson on Dec. 2 and 3, 2007. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The 2007 meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecturer and more than 25 technical papers that were presented in seven sessions. The sessions included environmental, geology, safety, metallurgy, mining, new projects and a special session on Mexico. Topics covered included mine closure, sustainable mining, exploration methods, health and safety issues, mining equipment and drilling. Much of the discussion at the conference concerned major new developments in the region?s copper mining industry. For example, Freeport-McMoRan?s new Safford Mine and BHP Billiton?s Pinto Valley restart were the topics of technical presentations. There was also much discussion among the attendees on the current and future price of copper, community relations, education issues and recruitment concerns. At the time of the conference, the price of copper hovered around $3.30/lb, up considerably from the 61 cents/lb in late 2001, when the industry was being challenged by world market conditions and a weakened domestic economy. Since then, strong demand from China helped push copper prices to record levels that at one time reached as high as $4/lb. The general consensus among the attendees is that the current price of around $3.30/lb will continue through 2008. Most attendees also expect increased corporate investments in the industry to continue. Copper mining in Arizona has been a major industry since the 1800s. In 2007, Arizona was the leading copper-producing state in the United States and produced more than $5 billion worth of copper. The copper mining industry in Arizona also produces byproduct gold, silver and molybdenum. Arizona is the second largest molybdenum producer in the United States.

The subjects to be examined in my portion of the session entitled "Technology of Aluminum.. Recovery" will be twofold. 1. Economics of the basic aluminum economy--supply-demand-price. 2. Specifications of aluminum products produced from municipal waste--from the secondary aluminum standpoint. It is the object of this speech to first impress everyone with the excellent long-run markets for the aluminum products from municipal waste and then to acquaint everyone with the rather liberal scrap specifications that the recycling industry can tolerate. The most important statement that can be made about the recycling of aluminum is that it is now and will be an economic necessity. This is true far many reasons; one which hit the headlines recently was Interior Secretary Rogers Morton's statement "Third-world nations could use mineral wealth not to achieve political ends but to jack up economic positions. The result could be sky-rocketing prices and dwindling supplies on world markets." There is no reason why the group of countries that supplies most of our bauxite can't get together the way oil-producing countries got together on the price of oil. (Jamaica and Surinam, are original sources of two-thirds of the aluminum used in the United States.) The worry is not so much that we will end up without the basic raw material but rather that the price might be so high that we could not afford it. So much for the blackmail reason for recycling aluminum; the supply and demand picture in both the primary and recycling sectors of the aluminum economy is far more meaningful.

In India, despite its natural abundance, demand for coal exceeds its countrywide supply due to failure to achieve high production targets, especially in opencast mines, which are responsible for 94.98 percent of total raw coal production in the country. Employment of technological solutions, such as surface miners, is key to achieving higher coal production and productivity in an environmentally friendly manner, especially in populated areas adjacent to the mining zone. This technology eliminates blast hole drilling, blasting and primary crushing units, thus reducing related environmental hazards like ground vibration and fly rocks.

Generally speaking, it is safe to address this conference as a conclave of Engineers, Owners' Agents, Governmental Representatives, and Contractors. As a group, we have assembled here to learn of our compatriots engaged in similiar underground operations throughout the United States and the World. We are here to learn of improved methods, higher technology, and better management. Through the acquisition of this knowledge, we each hope we can improve our own particular services, products and projects. This session is dedicated to a discussion of "Costs". The most apparent reason for a discussion of costs at this level is to expose subjects affecting costs and propose methods to reduce them. From that premise a contractor can identify three areas of discussion: design considerations, contract considerations, and governmental considerations. A fourth area of consideration is an introspective view of the contractor's role in the design construct process. Unnecessary costs and risks attributable to these areas are contributing excessively to ever increasing project and system costs. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS On April 20, 1977 the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago accepted proposals for the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan on Contract A and Contract B. This letting called for construction of over 33 km (21 miles) of the Mainstream Tunnel bored at 9.75 m (32 ft) to 10.67 m (35 ft.) in diameter. In 1939 the Geological Society of America published a summary of the geology of the ore deposits of the Mississippi Valley region, This volume, edited by E. S. Bastin, contained contributions from the foremost students of the area which described theregionalgeologic setting of the various deposits as wel as the detailed geology as then known. The various ideas as to the origin of the ores were discussed with the general, though not unanimous, conclusion that the deposits were hydrothermal products, Only those deposits in the immediate Mississippi Valley area were considered without any attempt to introduce evidence from other districts generally accepted as being of the "Mississippi Valley type." Since 1939, much new information has come from extended studies of two of the important districts described in the 1939 report andimportant extensions of the known ore have been found. Likewise, concentrated geologic efforts have been fruitful in severa "Mississippi Valley type" districts - both U. S. andforeign - not treated in the 939 paper. The wealth of new field information on the structural and stratigraphic relations of this interesting ore type, coupled with the results of theoretical and laboratory studies of the past 18 years, makes desirable a review of our present knowledge and interpretation of these important deposits which for many years have yielded over 20 percent of the world's annual production of lead and zinc, together with large amounts of fluorspar and barite. No restatement of the details of the geologic evidence willbe attempted here; the interested student is referred to the papers cited. Slide No. 1 shows the distribution around the world of the deposits under consideration. A principal thesis of my remarks is that there is so much similarity in all these deposits that it seems necessary for all of them to have had a similar mode of origin, whatever that may be. Variations in the shape, size and mineralogy of the orebodies give each district some individuality, but there are enough of the "typical" characteristics present in all cases to make classification in the "Mississippi Valley type" agreeableto most geologists. Thus the overall process giving rise to the ore solutions surely was the same for all in the group. Either they all have igneous affiliations or they all do not. Acknowledgment of this kinship between deposits in the various districts offers many advantages in trying to arrive at a decision as to just what the origin may have been, for the amount of guiding and limiting evidence which must fit into the hypothesis is greatly increased over that available in any one district, To a certain extent this was recognized by the authors of Special Paper 24 in treating all of the immediate Mississippi Valley areas together; by expanding the consideration to include ore deposits of this type all over the world the changes of success, i.e., arriving at the correct answer, are improved several fold. Since most of these districts are quite simple structurally, a number of hypotheses might fit the facts in any one of them, but if the facts to be met can safely be drawn from all the districts, then the explanations which will fit all the data are much less numerous. One purpose of this paper is to call attention to the field facts that have been reported from the .various areas which seem to have an important bearing on the kind of ore fluid that was responsible for the ore and on the way it circulated.

Early history of the district is typical of many, particularly in Southwestern United States. The usual early Spanish influence was felt; Marcos de Niza, Coronado and Father Kino are most notable, but authentic records regarding Spanish mining activities are sparse. About 1769 the Indian village of Tucson became a Spanish settlement. During the next century prospecting attempts were largely interrupted by the Indian, Mexican and Civil Wars. By 1870 Tucson had a population of 3200 and by 1880 the Southern Pacific Railroad extended all the way from Los Angeles. Pyrometasomatic copper ore was first produced with some local direct ore smelting done during the late 1800s. By 1907, a rail line was built from the Twin Buttes mines to Tucson by the Twin Buttes Mining and Smelting Company. World War I was a very active period, with mixed copper, lead, zinc, gold and silver production. This came mainly from underground replacement and contact metamorphic deposits and from practically all portions of the district. Some of these operations continued intermittently until the 1929 depression.

The surge in demand for battery materials, coupled with environmental challenges linked to battery disposal, underscores the need to recycle spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Green recycling approaches, in particular, have garnered attention for battery recycling. In this study, a hydrometallurgical method using a synergetic organic lixiviant combining methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and citric acid (CA) as an alternative to inorganic mineral acids was introduced as a green approach to recycle cathode materials of LIBs. The conditions for leaching and recovery processes were optimized. Cathode materials were regenerated using the recovered materials. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to summarize the current status of reagents used in the mineral industry plus present some current challenges and possible new technologies of the future. Table 1 lists the important families of reagents which, when taken together, constitute at least 95% of the current commercial reagent market. A very approximate estimate of the free world reagent market size in mineral applications is about 1.5 to 2.0 billion dollars (U.S.) using 1985 data. Obviously, to serve such a large market requires the effort of many different types of commercial supply sources. It is estimated that there are over 300 industrial firms in the free world that have a dedicated business/technical structure for supplying reagents related to the mining industry. There are a number of characteristics which are associated with the product families listed in Table 1. Understanding these characteristics helps to provide a realistic economic/technical basis for outlining future challenges in mining chemicals. 1.Essentially all of the products listed are old chemistry in the sense that the molecules have been known and manufactured for at least 25 years. This has not been a highly dynamic field of endeavor from the viewpoint of new product introduction. 2. The greater majority of the products listed can be viewed in commercial terms as "commodity" chemicals, that is, they are available from many sources and the pricing of a some- what generic product generally dominates differences in product quality or uniqueness. With commodity pricing, reagent suppliers significantly reduce research expenditures, loosen product quality somewhat if the applications of the reagents allow, etc. in order to be cost competitive.

Potash is a generic term that includes potassium chloride, potassium magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate, potassium nitrate, and sodium-potassium nitrate mixtures. In the ceramics industry, potash is also used to refer to potassium oxide. Potash, primarily in the form of potassium carbonate, was the first industrial mineral produced in the United States, and the first US patent issued was for an apparatus and process developed in 1790 for its production (Paynter, 1990). Prior to the 1860s, potash was primarily sold as an impure form of potassium carbonate produced by burning hard- wood trees and leaching the potassium salts from the ashes. The major early uses of potash include soap and glass making, dyeing fabrics, baking, and saltpeter for gunpowder. In 1859, the development of a purification process to remove the sodium and magnesium chlorides was developed for the carnallite found at Stassfurt, Germany, and mined potash became available. With the appearance of mined potash and the earlier (1840) discovery in Germany by Justus von Liebig that potash was a nutrient for crops, potash started to be used for high valued crops such as cotton and vegetables. The German potash companies quickly developed a manufacturing process for producing potassium sulfate for tobacco fertilization. German potash supplied nearly all American needs until the embargo of the First World War when imports from Germany were interrupted (Bateman, 1918). With the discovery of potash deposits in New Mexico in 1931, the United States became self-sufficient in potash. In 1962, the United States began importing potash from Canada, and two years later domestic apparent consumption began to exceed domestic production. Along with nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium is one of the three essential plant nutrients, the "K" of NPK terminology. As a result, 95% of potash production is used as plant fertilizer. In all plants, inadequate potassium diminishes growth, causes increased disease, stalk and stem breakage, and susceptibility to other stress conditions. Plants take up large quantities of potassium from the soil, and potash fertilization replaces this loss so that each new crop can be grown with the same vigor and productivity as the previous year's crop. The potassium depletion of the soil from growing repeated cotton and tobacco crops is well known in the history of southern agriculture in America. George Washington was known to have studied alternative crops that could be grown on soil that had been depleted by repeated tobacco crops. Most of the remaining 5% of potash consumption is by the chemical industry, as potassium hydroxide to produce soaps and detergents, glass and ceramic products, dyes, explosives, alkaline batteries, and medicines. Potash as chemical is used in oil field drilling mud, the aluminum recycling industry, and the electroplating industry. Additional minor uses for potassium chloride include water softener regeneration, sidewalk deicing, and salt substitution for human consumption. Potash is used in the food industry as potassium phosphate, and in production of glass products as potassium carbonate or nitrate. GEOLOGY Potassium is the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust and the sixth most abundant element in seawater. It is found in silicate minerals of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks and is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines. The majority of world potash resources are found in subsurface bedded salt deposits which yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies and are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. Because of the relatively high solubility of potassium minerals, potash from salt deposits is ideal for use as fertilizers. Some potash production is from evaporation of naturally occurring brines, but the vast majority of current domestic and international production is from bedded salt deposits. Sylvite, carnallite, kainite, and langbeinite are some of the more important potassium minerals (Table 1). Sylvinite, a mixture of KC1 and NaCl is the highest grade potash ore. Carnallite can be considered a potash ore when removal of magnesium chloride is included in the beneficiation, but it can also be considered a contaminant when mining for sylvite. Potassium sulfate and potassium nitrate are typically manufactured products. Potassium sulfate is produced from mined minerals through conversion processes in Italy, Germany, and Carlsbad, NM, and from brines in southern California and at the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Natural deposits of potassium nitrate occur only in small amounts in Chile. The majority of potash-bearing bedded salt deposits are believed to have originated from the evaporation of seawater or mixtures of seawater and other brines in restricted marine basins (Schmalz, 1969). The reflux depositional model for evaporite deposition was first described in the literature in 1888 by Ochsenius. A shallow bar, or sill, across the mouth of a basin lets in a restricted flow of seawater which evaporates into a salt-precipitating brine (Fig. 1). The density of the brine at the distal end increases with increased salinity, sinks to the bottom, and sets up a reflux current of higher density brine back toward the ocean. The sill, which restricts the inflow of seawater, allows inhibited flow of evaporation-concentrated brines back to the ocean. The least soluble salts are precipitated nearer the sill, and the most soluble components come out of solution in the deeper parts of the basin. The result is a lateral facies change in a tabular-shaped deposit that is due to the salinity gradients in the brine (Fig. 2A). The asymmetrical facies distribution of the Paradox Formation (Middle Pennsylvanian) Utah (Hite, 1970), the Prairie Formation (Middle Devonian) in Saskatchewan (Holter, 1972), and the Salado Formation (Upper Permian) in New Mexico (Lowenstein, 1988), might prompt explanation by such a model. Other deposits, such as the Salina Formation (Upper Silurian) in Michigan (Matthews and Egleson, 1974), show a facies distribution that could be described as a bull's eye pattern. Although some small subbasins of high grade sylvite are found near the margins, the potash is generally located in a central part of the basin surrounded by successively less soluble facies (Fig. 2B).
