The study explored a new combination amine collector (XK-28) that can obtain better flotation index and defoaming rate for magnetic iron ore. A pure quartz mineral test indicates that dodecylamine, XK-I, or XK-II has good collection effect on quartz and their best flotation pH is in the range of 6–7. The experimental results of a combination collector (XK-I:XK-II = 2:8.) show that the separation effect for quartz and magnetite is better than that of a single collector. The single factor for actual mineral test shows that when the combined reagent is used as the collector, the best conditions are pH = 7, 90 g/t dosage, and XK-I:XK-II = 2:8, which is consistant with the pure mineral test. The difference for dodecylamine as a collector is that the optimal dodecylamine dosage is 60 g/t. Under the best conditions of actual ore test, dodecylamine and XK-28 are respectively used as the collector to compare the flotation indexes. Study results indicate the magnetite grade using XK-28 as the collector is higher by 3.02% than that of using dodecylamine, recovery is increased by 1.92% over that of using dodecylamine. Based on the measurement results of zeta potential, uses of XK-28 can slightly increase the zeta potential difference of quartz and magnetite to enhance the flotation effect. The mechanism of action between the XK-28 collector and the actual ore from the Gongchangling plant is physical adsorption, and this adsorption also has hydrogen bond formation. Contact angle results shows that XK-28 improves the hydrophobicity of quartz better than dodecylamine. Compared with dodecylamine, XK-28 is more sparsely arranged on the surface of the foam. The foam produced by the XK-28 collector has better air permeability and it is more likely to merge and disappear with bubbles.

Conveyors constitute a critical artery, essential to the successful operation of most ore processing plants. Technological progress is permitting the recovery of metal from low grade ores which previously could not be worked economically. Significant in this progress are improved material handling techniques highlighted by the frequent and successful application of conveyors. From the standpoint of the plant manager the successful conveyors are those he never hears about. They continue to economically transport the loads applied to them, requiring only routine maintenance attention. When such conveyors are subjected to closer scrutiny you will find that they have been carefully selected and engineered to perform the required function under the anticipated conditions. Among the primary elements in a conveyor drive are the electrical motor and the speed reducer. The selection of these elements can be aided by the systematic consideration of several factors. These factors which focus attention on the critical operating conditions, will be individually evaluated and their effect upon the selection of the electrical drive system and speed reducer analyzed.

Heap leaching efficiency is reduced by poor solution flow characteristics (channeling and ponding), which result from fines migration. Agglomeration of the ore can immobilize fines, but copper leaching requires an acid-resistant binder to stabilize the agglomerates. Until now, there has not been a satisfactory way to evaluate whether a binder was effective, other than squeezing a handful to see if it “feels right”. We have developed procedures to quantitatively determine whether a binder gives good performance in an acidic solution, and have identified several binders that will be suitable for copper heap leaching.

The objective of asphalt mix design is to produce a mix with optimal performance using available aggregate stockpiles. Often, this process does not take into consideration aggregate plant stockpile inventories or the cost of aggregate in the mix. This is due to the lack of tools that enable the lab technician or the engineer to optimize the mix for good performance while reducing the cost of aggregate and managing the stockpile inventory levels. The Bailey method provides useful guidance on aggregate gradation selection for optimal performance. This work presents a linear programming model of the asphalt mix design problem. The algorithm is implemented in MATLAB as an Asphalt Mix Design Optimization (AMIDO) program. The program is successfully validated with real-life data. The results show that AMIDO can be used to successfully produce any mix design with known Bailey method ratios. Also, RAP can be included in a design easily by making use of the Bailey method ratios and AMIDO. This work improves the state-of-the-art in asphalt mix design for dense graded mixes and could potentially be modified for other mixes.

Introduction Fluorspar demand or consumption has been taken for granted in recent years, except for those that produce, market, or consume the commodity. Thinking used to be that as the steel and aluminum industry goes, so goes fluorspar. This is much less true today. The industry is becoming more dependent on chemical industries that feed primarily off hydrofluoric acid (HF) production. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) published an assessment of world fluorspar reserves and resources. It created a foundation of valuable data that can be used to monitor fluorspar availability. Celebrations were held this year commemorating the 100th anniversary of the isolation of fluorine. The US and other countries continue to struggle with the controversy of ozone depletion and the effect of fluorocarbons on the atmosphere. Goals for the government's strategic stockpile are being reevaluated. The market for fluorine chemicals is changing and diversifying, making it a challenge to assess and forecast fluorspar/fluorine demand. US production and distribution Fluorspar Fluorspar shipments from US mines reached an all-time high near the end of World War II in 1944 at 375 kt (413,800 st). Eighty-two mines produced more than 453 t (500 st) each, and 10 mines produced more than 9 kt (10,000 st.) each. Illinois supplied 43% of total shipments. Consumption in 1944 was 372 kt (410,200 st), of which 56% was used by steel producers and 32% by HF producers. This was the last year that US production exceeded US consumption. The post-World War II record for fluorspar shipments occurred in 1951 at 315 kt (347,000 st) 58 mines produced more than 453 t (500 st) and eight mines produced more than 9 kt (10,000 st).

INTRODUCTION For any identified mineral resource to qualify as a minable reserve, it must contain legally and economically extractable mineral at the time of determination. As competition for land has increased, the legal complexities have more than kept pace, frequently becoming the most important determinant in mineral exploration and development projects. Rarely will developers of a project avoid having to obtain numerous federal, state, and/or local permits while acquiring the necessary legal permission to begin mining. Each site must be selected carefully, not only for economic feasibility, but also for legal feasibility. Although it is impossible to present site-specific solutions for all potential underground developments, certain generalizations may be applied to specific land categories, particularly federally owned land. Such federally owned land includes more than 33% of the land area of the United States and many of the areas potentially attractive for future development. State and local restrictions affect a large portion of the nonfederal land, and those restrictions are equally important even though their diversity and current status require more regional study than can be provided herein (the list of references include sources of additional information). Each potential mining site requires a title search of the land status to determine the land ownership and the conditions affecting development. In addition, appropriate data concerning the mineralogic and economic potentials of an area must be collected. As listed in Table 1, many sources of public information are avail- able to aid potential developers. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical federal master title plat. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE The settlement of the United States reflects a fascinating history of public-land laws and subsequent mineral-disposal laws. Most of the statutes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries sought to dispose of land for the purpose of generating revenue to the federal government. The underlying need for general revenue contributed directly to numerous and often conflicting land policies. More recently, diverse federal programs such as environmental legislation have transcended the need for revenue in forming the framework that determines who has power over mineral developments and where those developments can take place. In 1812, the General Land Office was established under the Treasury Dept. At that time, English common law prevailed, entitling the owner of the surface to whatever was contained within the surface boundaries from the surface to the center of the earth. Unless a distinct title separated the mineral estate, it was included in the surface-land ownership. However, gold and silver were the property of the crown and were controlled by sovereign prerogative. Early state legislation on the subject of mines and minerals may be classified as legislation providing for the sale of state lands with a reservation of the minerals and legislation recognizing or asserting the sovereign prerogative for precious metals. In 1781, a Pennsylvania statute reserved 20% of all gold and silver ore for the use of the commonwealth. Thomas Jefferson suggested that a portion of all gold and silver be retained by the federal government. These early rules affecting land in the eastern states, now privately held, have been re- pealed, declared obsolete, or largely ignored. Federal legislation prior to 1848 and affecting mining may be classified as legislation reserving the minerals to the United States and legislation authorizing the disposition of reserved minerals by sale, lease, or grant. With many modifications, these basic policies remain in effect at the present time. A 1796 act provided for the sale of the Northwest Territory and for the establishment of the present system of rectangular survey for public lands. The Lake Superior copper region was the scene of "wild and baseless excitement in 1837" when the attorney general concluded that the president had the power to lease lands in Wisconsin; this opinion soon was overturned by another attorney general. By 1846, Congress had passed legislation authorizing the president to sell reserved lead mines "as soon as practicable" since the system of granting Leases had proved to be unprofitable to both the government and the lessees, many of whom refused to pay the rent. The general practice of early federal Legislation was to make a distinction between mineral lands and other lands, deal with them separately, and generally withhold mineral lands from disposal except through special legislation dealing with particular land. In 1848, following the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, a vast land area was ceded to the United States by Mexico. This area included the present states of California, Nevada, and Utah, as well as portions of Arizona. Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. This abolished the Mexican laws and customs relating to mining and preceded the adoption of the miners' own rules and customs. The adoption of those rules and customs followed a hard-fought battle between western congressmen and the eastern establishment. The western congressmen advocated adopting local customs through a location patent system, while the eastern establishment, particularly in Ohio and Indiana, favored an all- leasing system to pay off Civil War debts. The first mining law was passed in 1869 as an amendment to an act granting right-of-way to ditch land owners, and it was followed by the 1872 Mining Law. Precedent was established for the first categories of protected lands in the opening words of this act, which included the phrase "all unreserved" lands. Reserved lands subsequently defined included military and Indian reservations and were excluded from location since they were determined to be reserved lands. As in other industries, companies engaged in mining and extraction use and develop intellectual property (?IP?) in the form of new technologies or production processes. The development of IP assets in mining may occur as a byproduct of ongoing operations, or result from investment in dedicated R&D efforts. New technology may lower costs, increase quality of output, and/or increase operational efficiency or safety. Key business questions with respect to any new technology are how best to use IP assets, how to protect them and how to derive value from them. IP assets can provide a competitive advantage to a developing firm that uses the technology to improve its operating results. The developing firm can preclude others from using the technology if it believes that is the best way to exploit the technology?s value. Or, it can be shared with others taking care to ensure rights are maintained, thereby generating royalty income or strategic value through cross licensing or other business relationships. Either way, in order to fully realize the maximum economic benefit, innovators must protect the IP assets and control their dissemination.

Mt Giona situated in the floristic hot-spot of southern-central Greece has an especially rich flora that counts more than 1000 native vascular plant taxa (species and subspecies) and an important plant endemism that is estimated to be about 10% of the native flora. The danger of population reduction of rare and endemic plant species and the opportunity to use rare native species in rehabilitation projects are two different aspects of rehabilitation planning in Mt Giona. In this study, an inventory of rare and endemic species of the area, their classification into IUCN threatened categories and an estimation of their habitats vulnerability are provided. The results emphasize the necessity to develop a monitoring program to analyze population viability of certain threatened plant species. The creation of artificial micro-reserves on calcareous spoils derived from bauxite mining for the conservation of water-stress tolerant rare and endemic plants is also proposed. An inventory of the species that have colonized the mining spoils was also undertaken. Twelve of them are endemics. Seven native species, because of their biological and ecological features, were selected for rehabilitation purposes of disturbed areas by mining activities. Seed germination, aspects of their reproductive biology and seedling emergence after sowing in pots under field conditions were studied. The seed germination study in the laboratory led to the identification of the optimum germination conditions and the creation of germination protocol for each species. Seedling emergence depends on the sowing season and the mulching. The use of the above species is recommended for rehabilitation purposes. The creation of artificial micro-reserves on calcareous spoils derived from bauxite mining for the conservation of water-stress tolerant rare and endemic plants is also proposed.

While Russia continues to be a worldwide leader in asbestos production, the environmental and health status around Russian asbestos mines is not well known and understood, internationally. A literature review was performed to evaluate the potential impact of Russian mining operations on mesothelioma incidence rates in the Ural region where the majority of the asbestos deposits are located. Asbestos that has been mined in this region includes chrysotile, crocidolite, and anthophyllite forms. The Nicholson-Peto (1986) model was applied to published exposure data and mesothelioma mortality statistics in different cities and villages of the Ural region to estimate mesothelioma potency factors (KM) for the various associated fiber types. It was demonstrated that mesothelioma potency factors, as determined by Berman and Crump (2008), could be used to predict mesothelioma risks of non-occupationally exposed individuals in locations where either pure chrysotile, or both crocidolite and chrysotile, are mined and milled. A mesothelioma potency factor was calculated for anthophyllite that appeared to be higher than expected based on previously published studies. The highest incidence of mesothelioma was identified in a community close to a crocidolite mine. The study confirms the validity of utilizing current risk models for non-occupationally exposed populations near asbestos mining activities where asbestos exposures are relatively low and provides methods of characterizing mesothelioma risk in the former Soviet republics (FSRs).

The fundamental objective of mine plans are usually to maximize the mine profit by extracting ore at the lowest possible cost over the mine life while some technical constraints are satisfied. Since the costs associated with the operation of trucks and shovels as resources are significant, determining the optimum number and allocation of these resources is an essential issue. This paper presents a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model to determine the optimum number of shovels and trucks required to meet the short-term plan?s goals. Also, the model takes into account the allocation of trucks and shovels to mining faces. This model minimizes operational costs, while attempting to meet the production demand and to satisfy technological constraints. This paper also analyzes the operations of trucks and shovels in an open pit mine using ARENA simulation software.

Flotation circuits of a range of complexity are in use for a large number of ores. Since each ore is different and end-product quality requirements are not necessarily the same, circuit configurations of varying complexity are designed. How- ever, certain basic types of circuit configurations can be identified based upon the flotation behavior of the ores. These basic types can be combined to develop the specific f lowsheet configurations for a given ore. This chapter begins with a brief discussion of basic flowsheet configurations. Examples of the flowsheet configurations for a number of specific ores bearing different minerals are then described.

New mining health and safety training modalities are becoming increasingly prevalent in the underground mining industry. Various digital training tools have been developed over the past several years, but the extent of their use remains unclear. Advances in gamified training by way of computerbased video games and virtual reality (VR) have opened a new avenue for mine rescue and self-escape training, but these methods have not been widely adopted across the mining industry. Mine rescue and self-escape situations require a mix of in-classroom training as well as live drills, but it is important to assess the extent of and effectiveness of new training modalities. The Mine Rescue and Self-Escape Survey (MRSES) was distributed to underground mining operations to collect perceptions of current training effectiveness as well as willingness to adopt new training methods as a complement to live rescue drills. Responses from the MRSES indicate that adoption of digital training technologies has been slow-going despite an interest in their use. Further, there appears to be no meaningful connection between more frequent escape and rescue training and feelings of emergency preparedness. With relatively little use of already developed digital training tools but an interest in their adoption, it may be time to reassess current emergency preparedness training philosophies.

Airborne and ground magnetic surveys were made over and in the vicinity of the Sanford Hill ore body at Tahawus, Essex County, New York. These geophysical surveys served to: l. delineate, lithologic and structural features associated with the ore bodies; 2. indicate a major extension of the Sanford Hill ore body; and 3. guide a drilling program to prove this extension. The titaniferous magnetite ore body at Sanford Hill is associated with gabbro occurring in anorthosite. The contrast in the magnetic susceptibilities of these rock types, reflected in the magnetic measurements, allows geologic-mapping showing rock types and inferred structural features. The anomalous magnetic high of the airborne magnetometer survey indicated a southern extension of the Sanford Hill ore body. Diamond drilling, guided by the airborne and specifically the ground magnetic results, substantiated this interpreted ore extension to be of major magnitude.

Carbon dioxide sequestration by conversion to carbonates has become a promising option for CO2 storage. Experiments were conducted to determine the feasibility of CO2 sequestration at ambient conditions using a Ca-rich industrial waste in a carbonate solution. The Ca-rich industrial waste used in this study was lignite fly ash. Fly ash was chosen because it is cheap, available near large CO2 point sources, already in powder form, and reactive due to amorphous properties. In the experimental set-up, CO2 absorption was inferred by monitoring feed and exhaust gas CO2 concentrations. The addition of an alkali to a fly ash-distilled water solution provided a 50% increase in CO2 absorption of the solution. Absorption time also increased by 50% compared to a fly ash-distilled water solution. TGA analysis was used to determine the extent of CO2 sequestration in the carbonate form. At a liquid to solid ratio of 20:1, the conversion of ?free? calcium to carbonates was 75%. A CO2 balance on the system concluded that at the current operating conditions 42% of the total CO2 fed to the system was sequestered in the carbonate form. SEM-EDS analysis of the fly ash particles before and after reaction with CO2 indicated that the carbonate compound being formed was calcium carbonate. The analysis identified rhomboidal structures on the surface of the fly ash particles after reaction with CO2, but not before. These rhomboids are characteristic of calcium carbonate formation and they had higher Ca, C, and O concentrations than the host spheres, suggesting calcium carbonate formation.

Recently the petroleum market has made us aware that we are indeed global natural resource consumers, and as such, we have become captive to fundamental global resource economics and their attendant vagaries. Global resource supply problems are as old as civilization and mineral exploration one of its important catalysts. On the basis of natural resources empires have been expanded and new frontiers have been developed. Global consumption and production might even be viewed idealistically as a system dedicated to optimizing distribution to the consumer. However, this is not the case. Political instability and increased government polarization make dependency on a global market somewhat insecure. The U.S. must evaluate its domestic mineral re- sources on the basis that all metals are critical and that dependency on even the common and base metals may ultimately weaken our domestic economy and our potential international relationships and could cause critical weaknesses as demonstrated by the petroleum problem. This paper evaluates specifically the Duluth Gabbro Complex, of Northeastern Minnesota, (figure l), as a potential resource of critical and strategic metals. First, a chronology of some of the early exploration, will be followed by more recent intensive company studies and preliminary evaluations of economic feasibility. Lastly, metallurgical data, on some optimum conceptual mining plans will allow metal production data to be compared with an estimate of U.S. domestic needs in 1990. The purpose of this paper is to put into focus the difficulty of converting resources into vitally needed reserves.

The principle oxide minerals of molybdenum are wulfenite (PbMoO4), ferrimolybdite (Fe2(MOO 4)3.nH2O), powellite (CaMoO4), and ilsemannite (Mo304). Wulfenite is found in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, California, and Montana. It is also found in the states of Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico. Prior to 1915 wulfenite ores were the primary source of molybdenum. The solubility of wulfenite in hot sodium sulfide was first noted by Bonardi(1) during attempts to sulfidize wulfenite material prior to flotation. He identified lead sulfide and soluble sodium molybdate as reaction products. Bacon (2) sulfidized wulfenite in preparation for flotation and by X-ray analysis found the reaction product to be lead sulfide. Holmes(3) made an extensive investigation of the extraction of molybdenum from wulfenite concentrates by leaching. Nearly 100% molybdenum extraction was possible from -100 mesh samples leached for 15 min with 10% sodium sulfide solution at room temperature. Molybdenum extraction from -100 mesh samples after leaching 30 min at a temperature of 45°C using 2, 4, and 6% sodium sulfide was about 32, 79, and 98% respectively. The extraction showed little sensitivity to time, temperature, or particle size using 10" sodium sulfide solution.

When Homestake Mining Company's Mclaughlin Gold Project was being evaluated for development, it was apparent that recovery of gold from mined ore would be difficult and relatively expensive. The ore was refractory, averaging less than 50% recovery in conventional direct cyanidation milling tests. Extensive testing narrowed the processing choices to either autoclave or roaster oxidation before cyanidation. Roasting was ruled out due to higher capital and operating costs --the Mclaughlin mill would be the first large-scale application of autoclave oxidation of a refractory gold ore.

Coastal States Energy Company (Coastal), a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Coastal Corporation of Houston, Texas, owns coal mining operations in Utah and Kentucky. One of the Utah operations, Southern Utah Fuel Company (SUFCo), located 30 miles west of Salina, Utah, has been operated by Coastal since 1974. This operation is a single-seam, six-section mine operated from one portal area. It produces 2.2 million tons of coal per year and has a payroll of approximately 300 employees, Coal is mined by continuous miners, hauled by diesel-powered haulers and transported by belt conveyor to outside crushing and screening facilities. Sized coal is hauled by contract truckers 80 miles to a unit-train facility located at Levan, Utah.
