General. Data for the operating information given in the 15 tables in this chapter was obtained from voluminous questionnaires sent to over 100 operating companies in 1972. There has been a considera¬ble change since then in supply and power costs and many companies have had expansions or revisions since that time, so it must be realized that information is valid for the year 1972. This is true except for the three new properties of Sacaton, Metcalf, and Pinto Valley. These three operations started up since 1972 and all information for them was obtained in 1975. The questionnaires were sent to all major copper properties throughout the world as well as to many smaller units and to some mines that had complex or unusual conditions. Properties for which no information is given did not submit completed questionnaires. Several operations were unable to supply information requested be¬cause of company policy prohibiting it. However, data is presented for 75 different operating properties. The reference number of the left-hand column is the same for all 15 tables of data. If the company had several operating properties as of 1972, then subsequent properties use the same number but a different letter. For example, Anaconda's property at Butte, Mont., is IA, whereas Anaconda's (now Anamax) Twin Buttes property in Arizona is IB. Table I gives general data for the properties including exact loca¬tion, milling rate, pertinent assay values and recoveries, and a brief listing of ore and gangue minerals. It was not possible to obtain any more information from the properties in Chile except that given in Table I. Crushing. Crushing plant operating data is given in Table 2. This table gives data on the crushers, feeders, and screens used at each property. The data obtained on feeders was confusing, but, rather than completely eliminate this information, it was decided to report it as given. The confusion lies only in the description of where the feeder is located. Where a primary feeder is listed it was not possible to determine if this feeder was on primary feed or primary discharge. For secondary feeders it is known that the feeder listed usually is feeding the secondary crushers, but at some properties it is handling the secondary crusher discharge. The same reasoning holds true for tertiary feeders-they handle either tertiary feed or discharge. This table contains a voluminous amount of data. A column giving tons per day per square foot of screen area would have been very informative, but some properties included circulating load in the feed rate and others listed new feed only, so calculations were meaningless. Autogenous Mills. The use of autogenous or semiautogenous mills for any property must be given serious consideration in the future. Table 3 lists data for four properties that are fully autogenous and four more semiautogenous mills that use balls to supplement the chunks of ore. This method of grinding is especially applicable when the ore is of such a nature that crushing problems would be severe, such as when ore is wet or sticky or contains a lot of fines. Paradoxically, it should also be considered when ore is tough and hard and blocky because then the competency of the ore means it can serve well as the grinding media. Where the ore varies greatly in hardness, as at Cyprus Pima and Lornex, semiautogenous grinding has been especially beneficial with capital costs and operating costs both 10-20% lower than could be obtained with conventional crushing and grinding. Rod Mills. For a great many years the standard milling operation used two- or three-stage crushing followed by open circuit rod mills and then ball mills in closed circuit with classifiers of some kind. A surprising number of properties crush to the fine size of about 3/8 in. and then use ball mills only, in closed circuit, with no rod mills. It is difficult to say whether rod mill-ball mill circuits or ball mill only is the best. One can be certain of two things: (1) the argument will go on for a long time and (2) for some mills one method obviously was superior over the other. As ball mills of 14, 15 ft, and larger came into use, more properties like Duval Sierrita (16b ft diam by 19 ft long) and Bougainville (18 x 21 ft) were built with single-stage ball mill grinding. Although there are larger rod mills used, especially in the iron ore industry, the largest rod mills on copper ore are at Twin Buttes (14 x 18.5 ft) and at Gibraltar (13'A x 20 ft). The empirical rock failure criteria play an important role in predicting the mechanical behavior of rocks, since affecting parameters on the behavioral properties of rocks are complex and numerous. Usually the empirical failure criteria are obtained by statistical methods, namely by means of fitting the mathematical function onto the experimental data. For evaluation and verification of the results, however, the quality and accuracy of the fit must be considered. This paper studies the efficiency and accuracy of conventional empirical rock failure criteria using a new approach, which is based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude on the constant parameters of each criterion. The approach adopted here, is based on the combination of some parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), type of function, degree of freedom and the confidence level of constants. Correlation coefficient (R2) is then a comprehensive test and can be used effectively for comparison and accuracy of empirical rock failure criteria.

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated long-wall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every 1.5 m [5 fl] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 MA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

A major question in the design and permitting of a tailings storage facility is the quality and quantity of seepage which will occur from the base of the tailings facility into the underlying foundation and groundwater regime. A corollary to this is what liner system, if any, is necessary to protect the groundwater regime from unacceptable contamination. Modern tailings storage facilities are generally designed as drained tailings deposits whereby all free water is removed from the facility by decant, drainage and evaporation. This removes the source of on­going seepage and allows for efficient and timely reclamation of the facilities. Quantifying the residual seepage from the base of the tailings deposit is complicated due to the following factors:

Although fraught with problems of completeness and comparability, statistical measures of mineral exploration in the United States point downward for 1985 and 1986. Exploration expenditures in the US domestic and Canadian companies have dropped steadily from a 1981 peak of about $400 million to about $190 million in 1985, according to a recent survey of exploration statistics by the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG). These totals have been adjusted to account for differences in the estimated coverage of exploration activity by each year's SEG survey. This survey is now supported by the US Bureau of Mines and the US Geological Survey (USGS). The drop in current dollar amounts does not take into account the effects of inflation, which would make the decline even more substantial. Metals Economics Group of Boulder, CO reported in its Mine Development Bimonthly that announced exploration budgets for 1986 indicated an even larger drop for the past year. Worldwide expenditures for companies covered by the report dropped from about $800 million to $750 million from 1984 to 1985 and plummeted to about $600 million in 1986. Exploration activity has been declining since about 1981. This has been due in large part to low prices for base and ferrous metals. Exploration budgets of mining subsidiaries of oil companies have plunged as parent companies try to conserve cash in the face of the sharpest decline in oil prices in nearly 40 years. Mining subsidiaries of petroleum firms that were either liquidated or divested recently include Anaconda (Arco), Getty Mining (Texaco), and Cyprus Minerals (Amoco). Exploration expenditures in Canada increased in 1984 in regions where gold is a traditional target. But there was little change in 1985, based on preliminary statistics from a federal government report (Energy, Mines and Resources Mineral Bulletin MR 211, 1986). Claim staking in Canada dropped 23% from 1983 to 1984 and declined slightly in 1985. Diamond drilling increased in 1984 to the record levels of 1980 and 1981. The ratio of exploration to development expenditures in Canada, however, fell from a 1981 peak of 0.9 to about 0.5 in 1984. The report also indicated that, since 1981, there has been a massive write-off of reserves with high production costs. Reserve levels of all major metals were down since 1981. Precious metals exploration accounts for an increasing share of total mineral exploration. For example, the SEG data show that 90% of 1985 US exploration expenses by domestic mining companies were devoted to base and precious metals, compared with only 51% in 1980. The restructuring of the mining industry has been accompanied by a decrease in response to the last two SEG annual surveys, but the trend towards precious metals was already established in earlier years. Trade journal reports suggest that the reduction of long-term interest rates has encouraged the mining industry to make cost-reducing capital investments in existing mines to maintain competitiveness. This is consistent with the observations that metals explorations in 1986 was characterized not by announcements of "grassroots" discoveries, but by on-property exploration on identified mines or prospects. In an effort to cut costs, gold mining companies have been following up on low cost production opportunities in their prospect inventories. Short-term, low risk, heap leach operations that can produce rapid returns on investment have been pursued. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the stability of the mass flow rates and average pellet size in the different streams of an industrial-scale balling circuit. The variables in this study include water content, drum speed and fresh feed rate. It was found that both the mass flow rates and pellet diameter are greatly disturbed when a change, positive or negative, in any of the variables takes place. For most of these disturbances to be damped don, a period of one hour or so is required. When a disturbance in the feed rate was made, the transient period extended to more than one and half hours (the duration of the experiment). It was observed that there is an interaction between the drum speed and moisture needed for producing an acceptable green ball product. The moisture content of the product pellets was found to be a function of the pellet size, with the larger pellets retaining a higher moisture content.

Its high costs initially limited its application to special situations. The last ten years have seen the use of new pipe materials, new machines, new cutterheads, new techniques, and an average growth of30 percent each year. This paper documents the growth and changes that have occurred with microtunneling. Based on current industry practices and advances from abroad, this paper postulates what the next ten years may hold.

Introduction The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (Public Law 9587) (hereinafter the "Act" or "SMCRA") passed by Congress in August 1977 represents a comprehensive federal scheme for controlling surface coal mining and the surface effects of underground mining through permitting requirements, performance guidelines and reclamation planning. While the provisions of the Act have been the subject of numerous legal challenges and court battles over the years, it is difficult to identify a more controversial program within the Act than the provisions for designating lands as unsuitable for surface coal mining operations. The lands unsuitable designation process provides for the acceptance and review of petitions submitted by citizens or organizations seeking to have specified land areas designated unsuitable for all or certain types of surface coal mining activities. In filing these petitions, the interested parties or petitioners are required to make allegations about potential adverse impacts on people or the environment and submit evidence supporting their allegations. In 30 U.S.C. § 1272, Congress provided that "[a]ny person having an interest which is or may be adversely affected shall have the right to petition ... to have an area designated as unsuitable for surface coal mining operations." Under the Act, an area can be designated as unsuitable where the mining operation will (1) be incompatible with existing state or local land use plans, (2) affect fragile or historic lands, (3) affect renewable resource lands where mining operations could result in substantial loss or reduction of long-range productivity, or (4) affect natural hazard lands where such operations could substantially endanger life and property. In enacting SMCRA, Congress mandated that each state establish a process to determine which, if any, lands within the state are unsuitable for all or certain types of surface mining operations. In response to this federal legislation, the Kentucky General Assembly adopted a state regulatory program for surface mining that included provisions direct¬ing the Secretary of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet to establish a program for designating lands as unsuitable for surface mining as required by the Act. In recent litigation in Kentucky, several environmental groups filed a lands unsuitable petition, later joined by the University of Kentucky, challenging a proposal by Arch Mineral Corporation to surface mine over 3 million tons of recoverable coal. The petition sought to designate over 10,000 acres of land adjacent to Arch's proposed operations as unsuitable for surface mining operations, basically alleging that the mining would disturb an outdoor laboratory. The filing of the petition activated Kentucky's regulatory scheme for reviewing lands unsuitable petitions that can result in an absolute prohibition against surface mining on the petitioned land for historical, environmental and other related reasons. The designation process involves vague petition requirements creating a situation that Arch argued is devoid of constitutional due process and subject to abuse by the petitioner on many fronts. Arch maintained that the lands unsuitable regulations do not grant adequate protection to Arch's legitimate property rights under the due process clauses of the United States and Kentucky Constitutions and are thus void and unenforceable. The entire process resulting in a decision on the petition took just under 12 months in the Arch case, and although Arch was ultimately successful in preserving its right to mine, Arch's surface mining permit was held up for this period of time. This delay led to the cessation of mining operations by Arch and the idling of over 250 workers. This paper will review the lands unsuitable designation process and the significant implications the process has for existing surface mining operations, currently proposed operations and even those long-range operations not yet contemplated. Special emphasis will be given to Kentucky's lands unsuitable program. Finally, the recent litigation involving Arch Mineral Corporation and its effort to surface mine 81.5 acres of Arch controlled property will be utilized to illustrate this very unusual regulatory scheme. Regulatory background Chapter 30, Subchapter F of the Code of Federal Regulations (C.F.R.) promulgated to implement the provisions of SMCRA, requires that each state establish procedures under the state's surface mining program for designating non-federal and non-Indian state lands as unsuitable for all or certain types of surface coal mining operations. 30 C.F.R. § 764.1. The C.F.R. establishes minimum standards for state lands unsuitable programs and sets out requirements for filing a Lands Unsuitable Petition (hereinafter "LUP"), processing LUPs, decision-making guidelines and hearing requirements. Kentucky has adopted regulations providing for the implementation of the lands unsuitable process as part of the state's regulatory program under SMCRA. The following discussion summarizes the principle components of the Kentucky lands unsuitable program.

Marketing is the linchpin of the industrial-mineral (IM) industry. Without markets and consumers for IM products, all other associated IM activities are superfluous. The simple existence of an IM deposit does not mean that it can be exploited. A dynamic interaction between exploration (geology), mining, processing, transport, marketing, sales, and consumers is required for profits. Geology dictates the existence of a deposit, but markets dictate its development, and transportation provides the connection. This is true to such an extent that marketing commonly is called the exploration phase of IMs. Marketing is strategic and includes long-range market-development and planning activities, whereas selling is tactical and more focused on day-to-day consumer interactions. Each will help the other when properly done. Many producers of IMs have failed because of inadequate marketing skill, information, and practice. Over many years at the Montana Bureau of Mines, the many developers seeking technical assistance to find an IM deposit, but who had no marketing plan, always failed. In contrast, the few who sought assistance first on marketing, with the IM deposit to be found later, always succeeded (Richard Berg, personal communication, 1998). Marketing has many facets helped by geologists who must be aware of what marketing is attempting to do. A geologist needs to understand many aspects of IMs: location (deposits, plants, consumers), processing (specifications), transportation (truck, rail, barge, ship), competition (local, regional, national, international), substitutes, pricing, and new developments and market forces of all kinds. Some needed skills are not taught formally to geologists, so well-rounded self-education and on-the-job training are the way a geologist normally enters into IM marketing. The IM geologist generally is associated with marketing either by helping to prepare a market study or by acting on the results of one. Preparing a market study is a two-part process. The first part is relatively simple but requires a time-consuming collation of data into an IM survey (mostly past-and present-oriented). The more difficult and much more important second part entails expanding the IM survey into a market evaluation (mainly future-oriented) that emphasizes forecasting, timing, location, and specific products. A market evaluation generally boils down to formulating the right questions to ask of the right persons. One very good question to ask is, "What could be the market for this specific IM?" while thinking for yourself without excessive recourse to gossip, rumors, promoters, developers, or (at times) IM experts. The evaluation must prove that market potential exists and suggests a marketing plan. Effective marketing is an ongoing process, with the initial marketing plan modified over time, using wide and continuous input to avoid tunnel vision. Industrial-mineral markets are based either on commodity (lower-priced, basic-processing) minerals or specialty (higher-priced, value-added) minerals. IM marketing methods are either product-driven (commodity minerals), a more traditional approach, or market-driven (specialty minerals), but these are neither mutually exclusive nor is one always better than the other. Focusing too much on specialty minerals can lead to problems. A blend of commodity products with specialty products commonly lowers risk and enhances long-term profits. The highest profits occur in specialty minerals at the cost of higher risk and complexity and require intelligent marketing, versatile technical services, and creative research and development. Industrial minerals are best served by an industrial-marketing approach rather than a consumer approach. Modern industrial marketing emphasizes the consumer using the "marketing concept." The marketing concept focuses all management and operational activities on total consumer management and satisfaction similar to the total quality management approaches to excellence.

The Lac Shortt gold deposit is located in Northwestern Quebec, at some 115 km west of the Opemiska Division and 380 km northeast of the Lac Dufault Division, as shown on Figure 1. Falconbridge's exploration crews drilled the first six holes in the gold-bearing ore zone in 1979. After further diamond drilling from surface in 1980, the decision was taken to carry out an underground exploration program. A three-compartment shaft was sunk to a depth of 340 metres in 1981 and 1982; it was followed by an extensive exploration program, which included 1073 metres of cross-cutting and footwall drifting, 645 metres of ore drifting and 11 200 metres of diamond drilling. The underground work was completed by mid-winter 1983. It was followed by a complete feasibility study of the Lac Shortt Project. After some $Can 14.2 millions in exploration expenditures, the Board of Directors of Corp. Falconbridge Copper approved in July 1983 additional expenditures of $Can 45 millions to bring the Lac Shortt Mine in production at the capacity of 261 000 tonnes per year. Gold price was $US 425 per ounce at the time.

There are many problems faced by ventilation engineers in deep underground mining operations, not the least of which is controlling miner exposure to radon gas and its daughter products. Radon gas is commonly found in uranium mining operations, but may also be present in other deep metal mines. For example, tin mines in England, iron ore mines in Sweden, gold mines in South Africa, and molybdenum mines in the U. S. have potential radon exposures. This is because uranium and accompanying radium ore are ubiquitous to the earth's crust albeit at low levels. The fact that the activity represented by one WL can be caused by a relatively low concentration of radon gas increases the difficulty of control. Since the source of the radon gas is usually widespread throughout a mine, local exhaust ventilation is not a viable control schema. The technique used to control exposure is then dilution ventilation and, in fact, huge amounts of air must be moved in order to reduce potential exposures to an acceptable level. An interesting comparison can be made of ventilation rates in different types of mines. It is estimated in modern coal mines, which are generally acknowledged to have high rates of ventilation, that about eleven tons of air are moved for each ton of ore mined. A typical operating uranium mine may have ventilation flows of 14-15 tons per ton of ore mined. This provides an idea of the scope and importance of ventilation in modern mining operations where radon is a hazard. Further pressure is put on ventilation engineers by the steady downward trend in exposure limits set by national and international standard setting agencies. Much of this tendency toward lowered standards is based upon longitudinal mortality studies of miner populations. Another important factor is the limited number of experienced miners available in the labor pool. For optimum production, it is important to have as many experienced miners underground in each shift as possible. However, the average daily exposure in a U. S. mine must be less than .3 WL to permit the miner to work underground for a full year. The ventilation system then must provide enough uncontaminated air to maintain the WL below the .3 TTL level to maximize production efficiency and minimize personnel turnover and the problems associated with it. Ultimately, the goal of the ventilation engineer and health physicist is to protect the working miner from harmful exposures based upon currently acceptable standards. U. S. Federal regulations require that in uranium mines all active work sites must be monitored every two weeks if they measure above .1 WL. Areas that have .3 WL ratios or higher must be monitored on a weekly basis until five consecutive weekly samples show the level has dropped below .3 WL. Also, exposure records must be kept for all individuals exposed to levels exceeding .3 WL. These requirements provide a strong economic incentive to have a ventilation system that minimizes exposure of any personnel. A good ventilation system requires careful planning, operation and backup in order to fulfill its mission of providing adequate clean air. Its proper operation also requires coordination with production personnel so it can be adapted as new areas in the mine open up and old areas are sealed off. The ultimate indicator of ventilation efficiency to control radon daughter exposure is, of course, monitoring working levels. Historically, this has been done using the Kusnetz, Tsivoglou, and Rolle's methods, among others. These methods all require cumbersome equipment and tedious calculations to obtain the measurements that results in WL. More important, however, they require a significant time lag between sampling and counting, typically 40-90 minutes. This time lag is, in fact, what can cause significant economic losses due to unnecessary downtime as well as high WL exposures. In a typical mining situation, a sampling technician using the Kusnetz method takes a sample, moves to the next location and takes another sample and so on. Forty to ninety minutes after the first sample, the technician will stop, run the activity count on the filter and calculate the WL. The technician may be one-half mile away or several levels removed from where the first sample was taken when it is counted. If the WL ratio is high the technician must then backtrack to the sample position. There are then two options. If the sample area is a working stage, it can be shut down or a second sample can be taken. If the first alternative is chosen; i.e., shutdown and correction of the ventilation, then another sample must be taken, followed by a forty minute wait for results. If the ventilation adjustment didn't correct the problem, then the whole process must be repeated with a minimum of forty-five minutes per sample cycle when using the Kusnetz method. It has been estimated from operating uranium mines that the cost per hour for downtime on a production slope is about $1,50O/hour. The time lag between sampling and resultant data can be very costly. If the second alternative is chosen to verify the first reading, the miners may be unnecessarily exposed to high levels while waiting for the result. Clearly, such a sampling system can be markedly improved by eliminating the excessive time lag between sampling and analysis.

Minerales Monclova, S.A. de C.V. (MIMOSA) is owned by Grupo Acerero Del Norte (GAN). This company has 4 underground coal mines and 1 open pit to feed it?s steelmaking facilities located in the city of Monclova in the North of México in the state of Coahuila. The current underground mines are Mine 3, 5, 6 and 7 and the future projects are Mines 8 and 9. In the last years Mines 2 and 4 have been closed because they finished their coal resources. The remaining mines have bigger production and developments requirements in order to accomplish the goals of the company. The mines have been working in deeper and gassier areas. These conditions have required improvements in the ventilation design and methane control systems for all the mines. In some cases the ventilation of some of the MIMOSA?S mines has been increased 80%, and besides this, an intensive methane drainage program has been applied using horizontal in-seam boreholes and gob wells. The short-term ventilation plan includes the construction of 3 new vertical shafts with 5 and 6 meters diameter for Mines 5, 6 and 7 and the purchasing of bigger new main and backup fans for each one of these mines. One of these vertical shafts and the purchasing of the first 2 fans is already in process. This paper will explain the evolution and results of the ventilation and methane drainage systems in MIMOSA and the ventilation planning for the future years.

Two new coal use technologies are on the verge of commercial acceptance by the utility industry: atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) and gasification combined cycle (GCC). Generating plants under construction or in planning will replace older pulverized coal (PC) boilers or substitute for new PC boiler capacity. This paper reports recent developments in the commercialization of AFBC and GCC, emphasizing the potential impact on the coal mining industry. The influence of coal quality characteristics on fuel selection is explored by means of preliminary economic calculations for different coals and competing fuels.

The reaction kinetics of sulfuric acid leaching of brass foundry flue dusts were studied. As received flue dusts were separated into two size fractions, a coarse fraction (median size 103.5 microns) and a fine fraction (median size 3.4 microns). Experiments were performed on both fractions al-though most results are reported for the coarse fraction. Leaching experiments were conducted in a stirred reactor to determine those factors which govern the kinetic response of the sys-tem. The kinetics were followed by determining the increase in the concentration of dissolved copper with time. The effects of temperature, concentration and oxygen partial pressure on the rate of copper dissolution were examined. In addition, reaction residues were examined by SEM, EDAX and X-ray analysis. An activation energy of 4.8 kcal/mole (20.08 kJ/mole) was calculated. The rate was found to be significantly dependent on oxygen partial pressure and acid concentration. The order of the reaction with respect to oxygen partial pressure and hydrogen ion concentration was approximately 1.50 and 0.37, respectively. Waste rock facilities (WRF) generally have a large footprint depending on the strip ratio the mine plan provides. Considerable planning is involved during the initial phase of the mine plan regarding the location of the WRF. As the mining operations are commenced the locations of the WRF change accordingly with the variations in the mine plan involving feedback and support from local communities and stakeholders. Waste rock facilities management becomes challenging when the area available for placement is limited due to terrain topography, environmental and permitting constraints. Risks associated in the design of waste rock facilities constitute particle size of rock, chemistry associated with the rock for reactivity and stability of the over all facility. This paper will provide some insights on designing, scheduling and managing a WRF. Emphasis on geotechnical, geophysics and geochemistry aspects of waste rock with reference to design, construction process and scheduling of WRF are also presented. Design improvements in the reclamation slope of WRF for erosion control will be discussed. Continuous improvement (CI) methodology will be introduced in the process of WRF operations. Current practices and future recommendations towards sustainability and consistency in operating WRF will be discussed in conclusion.

If enthusiasm is a requirement, the coordinator of the Total Concept program is a dynamic, exciting leader with a lot of potential to keep the program a vital and progressive effort for many years. Art Meyer is entering his third year as the leader of the Total Concept. He is using his years of experience in the industry to emphasize the basics required for the course, and has also instituted new programs. Meyer began his career, after graduation from CSM as geological engineer in 1950, with St. Joe Lead. He held other responsible positions with Amax and Rocky Mountain Energy. He can answer any questions that may crop up or find the right resource person for those questions. Additions to the 18-year-old curriculum instituted since Meyer became coordinator are the study of industrial minerals and strategic minerals. The industrial minerals portion of the course includes visits to a major sand and gravel operation, in addition to lectures on the subject. Much of the strategic minerals requires study and lectures, since Colorado is not a big production state in these commodities. How does the director arrive at new additions or deletions to the program? "It's very simple," he says. "We listen to questions posed by the students, recommendations by industry people who know what is important, and feed-back from course alumni." Alumni feedback from this course has been extremely gratifying, according to Meyer. Other ideas are constantly surfacing, ideas that will be implemented as time and resources permit. One of the most gratifying results of the Total Concept program from an alumnus was the development of a complete teacher and student package by John Christiansen, a teacher at Cherry Creek High School near Denver. The course so excited Christiansen that he envi¬sioned an energy and minerals course to fill a perceived gap in science education on the high school level. The draft package was so attractive that it was sponsored and the publication costs guaranteed by the Society of Mining Engineers. Today, under the leadership of the Mineral Information Institute, the package is in use in several states and has gained enthusiastic acceptance. Other alumni have launched their efforts to broaden the scope of the existing science education by instituting courses or special seminars. One recent alumnus, Dick Will, class of 1984, who was sponsored by the Denver Mining Club, is conducting a science seminar based on his experiences with the Total Concept program. Meyer will be speaking at this seminar, as well as other industry speakers from the SME GEM Committee Speaker's Bureau. Jane Dianich, another alumna, brought her students at Kent Country Day school, also near Denver, into the mainstream of resource education by taking them on abbreviated field trips similar to those she experienced while in the program. She also has been a vocal supporter of the organization and available to speak to other teachers on the value of the experience. George Wright, of the Lake School and a second sponsoree of the Denver Mining Club, admits he came into the program because the six credit hours given toward his continuing education requirement were attractive. He then stayed on to become an ardent advocate of the mining industry. In his own words, "I'm a convert." Wright has developed a slide presentation and has lectured to teachers and students as well as presenting his views to the Denver Mining Club. He has also indicated a willingness to participate with other organizations who need speakers. The value of these speakers and teachers is obvious, according to Meyer. "They represent a respected segment of the public and are not too `tainted' by association with an industry that is too often under criticism from various groups. They represent, in effect, a citizen's advocacy of the industry, which is an invaluable asset to us all." One of Meyer's concerns about the program is that the out-of-state student rate attendance is declining. He is hoping that more AIME sections around the country will become involved in the scholarship program of the Total Concept. Total cost is about $1200 per student. "The rewards to their sections could be tremendous, with the same kind of participation we get here with speakers, citizen advocates, and interested persons," he said. Teachers say that the course improves their teaching and knowledge in a number of subjects including biology, history, economics, career planning, environmental data, science, math, geography, physics, and chemistry. The recent interest in hazardous waste management has sharpened the desire to learn more about this. And Meyer foresees another segment of the course to emphasize this subject. "One of the most valuable resources we have is the field trip program. The course would probably be meaningless without this opportunity to get out into the field where these folks can see what actually happens. George Wright, for example, was amazed at the very small amount of area actually involved in the mining operation - something contrary to what he had heard in the past." The 45 students are taken by van on eight trips, one each week, and the long trip to Colorado's Western Slope. During this long adventure, the students visit underground mines, including CSM's Edgar, open-cut and underground coal mines, precious metals mines, and oil shale properties. They also have opportunities to meet with mine personnel at each of these stops. These field trips fill another function. Living together and exchanging ideas helps the teachers come up with new concepts for the classroom work - expanding their horizons. "As long as we have a mining industry, this effort will continue to grow," Meyer said, "and will fulfill a need within the public education and public relations area of the industry. We need the support. I have dozens of comments from teachers who attest to the value of this program. They understand. The mining industry must continue to do its part."

The passage of an ore pulp through the froth flotation process results in the production, after dewatering, of a finely divided concentrate. This intermediate product Trust be handled to the subsequent process facilities via belt or other types of conveyors, hoppers, bins, chutes and feeders, and the like, Flotation concentrate has some difficult handling properties such as abrasiveness, sluggishness when moist, or fluidity when dry, These characteristics require the judicious selection or design of handling, equipment and the careful engineering of transfer chutes. It is to the special problems which are encountered in this in-plant handling procedure that this paper is addressed. The methods which will be discussed have beer. developed primarily for the handling of the froth flotation concentrates of copper, leap, and taconite iron ores, but may be generalized, with appropriate modifications, to apply to other similar metallic concentrate&. The controlled feeding of concentrates frog: bins and hoppers is covered alone with some of the techniques used to transfer concentrates from ore belt conveyor to another. Methods are described for unloading belt conveyors into bins or storage tiles, The reclamation from storage piles is also treated.

The Fort Knox Mine is located in Alaska?s interior, where the average ambient air temperatures range from -24°C (-11°F) in January to 16°C (61°F) in July. The mill processes a free-milling gold ore utilizing both a gravity recovery circuit and conventional cyanide leach/carbon-in-pulp circuits. Mathematical models have been developed to accurately predict the impact of leach circuit slurry temperature on gold leaching, carbon adsorption and cyanide destruction kinetics. Additionally, an energy-balance approach has been used to model the seasonal variations in slurry temperatures throughout the Fort Knox mill. The energy-balance model, combined with the kinetics models previously developed to predict plant performance, was used to justify a tailing thickener installation at the Fort Knox Mine. This paper describes the development of the energy-balance model and its prediction of plant performance assuming a tailings wash thickener to reduce heat loss from the mill. Also presented is an analysis of the post-project plant performance that validates the model and shows that the mine produced an additional 596 kg (19,155 oz) of gold while reducing mill reagent costs by $6,302,000 during the first 38 months of operation.

INTRODUCTION Investigations of radon and radon daughter concentrations in Swedish [non-uranium] mines started in the late 1960's. The first screening measurements showed that the average annual exposure to radon and radon daughter products was 4.7 WLM. The main reason for high radon and radon daughter concentrations was inefficient ventilation and radonrich water entering the mine. In the radon regulations worked out later it was stated that no miner should be exposed to more than 60 000 pCi h/1 equilibrium equivalent concentration of radon annual exposure, corresponding to 3.6 WLM. Now, 1981 the situation has changed considerably. From the average annual exposure of 4.7 WLM in 1970 it is now only 0.7 WLM. Sweden has up to now had only one [uranium] mine and the work there has only been investigative. However, there are plans for a commercial uranium mine in another part of Sweden. The radon problems in these mines are widely different depending on the mineralogy. NON-URANIUM MINES The radiation problems in Swedish mines were not recognised until the late 60's. The first radon and radon daughter measurements were made in some sulphide ore mines in 1967 (1). The radon and radon daughter concentrations were surprisingly high for non-uranium mines. In order to have a complete picture of the radon situation in Swedish mines the National Institute of Radiation Protection (NIRP) decided to make measurements in all, at that time about 60 mines (2). To get results as fast as possible measurements on radon gas seemed most appropriate to start with. Sampling was made by mailing a number of evacuated 4.8 litre conventional propane containers from NIRP to each mine. The containers were then opened at the place of interest. After sampling the containers were sealed and then mailed back to the institute for measurement. The measurements were made in ionization chambers. This method only gave the radon concentration and the radon daughter concentration was estimated by multiplying the radon concentration by an assumed equilibrium factor. The equilibrium factor is defined as the ratio of the total potential alpha energy for the given daughter concentration to the total potential alpha energy of the daughters if they are in equilibrium with the given radon concentration. The results of this first preliminary survey indicated that a great many of the Swedish miners probably had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. As the radiation exposure in non-uranium mines was not regulated in either the Swedish Radiation Protection Act or the Swedish Labour Protection Act work was started on special radon regulations. A lung cancer mortality study was also started. To check the results of the first survey and to get experience and knowledge of radon problems in mines, it was decided that personnel from the NIRP should visit each mine for a detailed investigation of radon and radon daughter concentrations starting with the ones with the highest radon concentrations. The main reasons for these so-called "basic measurements" were: 1. To estimate the doses received by Swedish miners 2. To find the sources of the high radon and radon daughter concentrations 3. To find appropriate counter-measures 4. To determine the most typical equilibrium factor for each mine. Unlike most uranium mines the reason for high radon concentrations in non-uranium mines is seldom the occurrence of highly radioactive minerals. The main sources were found to be waste-rock and radon-rich water. In order to filter and warm up the inlet air, especially in winter time, it was very common at that time to suck the air through broken wasterock. By doing so the air was contaminated with radon from the waste-rock and radon-rich water in it. It is noteworthy that the radium and uranium concentration in the waste-rock is relatively low. The uranium concentration is only of the order of 15 - 20 ppm. The action to prevent this contamination of the inlet air was to change the direction of the ventilation and in the case of radon-rich water entering the mine the action was to prevent the air coming into contact with the water. The first calculation of the radon daughter exposure of Swedish miners was based on radon gas measurements. The radon daughter concentration was estimated by using an assumed equilibrium factor of 0.5. Later when the mines were visited by institute staff it was possible to compare the assumed equilibrium factor with the measured ones. It was found that the factor varied from 0.15 at the air inlet to 1.0 at the air outlet and the average equilibrium factor on workplaces for almost all mines was between 0.4 and 0.6. The result of the exposure calculation in 1970 showed that more than 40 % of the miners had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. One of the present trends in the mining industry is the increased use of mining contractors. In the past, many project owners have utilized mining contractors for topsoil stripping or overburden removal, usually on a short-term or periodic basis. In recent years, mining contractors have not only removed the overburden, but mined the product as well. Why is this change occurring? A prevalent trend in the mining industry appears to be the outsourcing of non-core and non-strategic functions, allowing producers to focus more on areas of technical expertise where higher incremental value is added—that is the processing, refining, and marketing of the product. As capital allocation becomes more critical, this trend is likely to continue.
