The lower Middle Cambrian phosphorite deposits of the Georgina Basin shown in Figure 1 were found in the period 1966-1968 by three companies, namely, International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, Continental Oil Corporation and Broken Hill South Limited. Of these deposits the significant ones are Duchess, Sherrin Creek, D Tree, Lady Annie, Lady Jane, and Wonarah which together aggregate several billion tons reserves of phosphate. Due to the economic factors of freight costs to the coast and softening of the world market price for rock phosphate, none of them is in production, nor is any in the development stage. This paper reviews the historical background to the discovery of these deposits and then deals principally with the discovery of non-outcropping phosphorites in the Barkly Tablelands of Northern Territory by the interpretation of gamma radiation logs of abandoned water bores.

Longwall face-to-face equipment transfers or moves are, for many companies, the largest single source of non-productive time in a longwall mining system. Detailed planning and resourceful thinking are paramount for economical, safe, and timely longwall moves. New equipment and innovative techniques are frequently tested in order to reduce overall move time. Determining the cost effectiveness of these ideas is difficult since the decision is influenced by many subjective factors. A project scheduling simulation model of the longwall move process was developed in order to analyze and assess the economic viability of innovative transfer methods and equipment. The model provides a project duration frequency distribution and lists of critically indexed activities and paths. It compares the monetary savings from reduced transfer time and capital costs for several innovative ideas.

This paper is intended to provide information for one to be able to determine the slurry system head curve for pump applications. The slurry characteristics are the basis for what the size, material of construction, and critical carrying velocity of the pipe will be. The system head curve is adjusted by use of the pipe friction coefficient factor and slurry derate factors. An example using multi-staging of slurry pump curves is presented to compare the wear life relationship of pump parts for a tailing pipeline system head curve.

Effluents discharged from gold mills, and more recently from heap leaching operations, pose significant hazards to the environment if not properly managed prior to discharge. This paper describes the nature of wastewaters which must be treated, the treatment processes being applied in Canada and the capabilities of these methods in removing cyanide and metals. As a result of past practice the most common method of reducing cyanide in gold mill effluents remains that of natural degradation in tailings ponds. This method has proven capable of producing high quality effluents where large ponds and sufficiently long water retention times can be provided, but at many mines this has not been the case. Since 1981, as a result of these limitations there has been a strong move in Canada to chemically-based effluent treatment plants, particularly as additional processes became available. Canadian gold mills have become leaders in the use of chemical processes to remove cyanide, in terms of the variety of such processes in operation (five in total), the number of plant installations and the number of processes developed in this country. The hydrogen peroxide and Inco SO2-air processes, in that order, are being applied most widely. Alkaline chlorination, the initial process to be used fairly extensively has been almost totally replaced by the two methods mentioned above. Since a number of effective methods are now available for the treatment of gold mill effluents, the selection of a process for application at a specific mill requires careful consideration of:

This study revealed significantly less favorable perceptions of the existing organizational safety climate among workers in the underground coal-mining sector compared with those in the industrial-minerals and sand, stone and gravel (SSG) sectors. Consequently, it is important to consider pragmatic ways in which health and safety management systems (HSMS) in coal mines can alter processes to improve these perceptions. Given the interdependencies of safety climate factors and HSMS elements, researchers explored mineworker perceptions of the supportiveness of organizational safety climate factors among mineworkers and identified significant differences in perceptions across sectors. In this paper, we suggest that health and safety professionals in underground coal mining and organizations with fewer resources or less mature HSMSs focus on these factors to bolster support for proactive safety performance. Potential barriers to implementing or improving relevant HSMS elements and ideas to help foster more favorable perceptions of organizational safety climate are also discussed.

"Bridgestone Americas opened the company’s first U.S.-based giant off-road radial (ORR) tire plant in November. The 139,000-m2 (1.5 -million-sq ft) plant, located on a 222-ha (550- acre) site in Aiken County, SC, will produce radial tire products, including 157-cm (63-in.) tires, used on mining and aggregate haul trucks.The plant, announced in 2011 as a $970-million investment, represents the largest investment that Bridgestone has made in the United States, and is also the single largest investment ever made in South Carolina. Although it had already been producing tires for a few months, the plant officially opened with a ceremony in November 2014, attended by South Carolina federal, state and local elected officials, as well as Bridgestone personnel from the United States and Japan. Prior to the Aiken County plant’s construction, all of Bridgestone’s giant ORR tires were manufactured at its Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu facilities in Japan.Kurt Danielson, president of Bridgestone’s U.S. & Canada Commercial Group, said the facility was built to primarily serve the North American mining and aggregate industries in a more efficient manner. "It’s a real change for us," he said of the U.S.-based plant at its opening ceremony. "This allows us to have a true global presence."The Aiken County plant is intended to allow Bridgestone to meet customer demand for ORR tires, Danielson said. "It really frees up our other plants in Japan to service the rest of the world, allowing us to serve our customers faster," Danielson said. "As soon as we build (a tire), we can have it to our customers."Tires manufactured at Bridgestone’s Japanese plants could spend up to a month in transit to the American continents; from initial mixing of the rubber and other compounds to being warehoused, tires manufactured at the Aiken County plant can be ready to ship in four to five days.Danielson said most of the tires built in Aiken County will be used by customers on the American continents. "We will export," he said, "but our desire is to use as much capacity as we can for the Americas."Ground was broken for the facility inSeptember 2011, when commodity prices were much different than today and global demand for tires had skyrocketed."

The concept of global-market access through transportation efficiency is a concept whose time has come. The basis of this approach is customer satisfaction—the higher the better. But beyond what seems almost too logical is the question of how to achieve this market access. All industrial mineral exporters face stiff competition. Factors include proximity of competitive industrial minerals and substitutes, pricing pressure, political and cultural differences, currency fluctuations, communication problems, trade finance restrictions, and transportation imbalances. The following discussion will focus on transportation activities in global competitiveness, but the producer with the larger offering of services will often make the sale, not necessarily the low-cost producer (Cook, 2002). Some key concepts for global-market access are “the market concept,” just-in-time delivery, quality retention, and global customer service.

The energy and climate protection policy of European Union (EU), and its Member States adopted in 2007 bridges security of supply, environmental protection and competitiveness. The objectives of the EU energy and environmental strategy cover the foreseeable period till 2020. It assumes all sources of energy will be needed. The objectives for renewable and improved efficiency are ambitious; it must be established if they are also realistic. Coal can continue to make valuable contribution to the security of supply and low price of electricity, only with technologies allowing for drastic reduction of the CO2 emitted of its combustion. The aimed at -20% reduction of green-house gases (GHG) of EU-27 by 2020 is an objective limited in time and content. Europe produces less than 15% of global CO2 and this will be reduced to 10% in 2030. Emissions Trading (ET) is to remain the central instrument for CO2 management, especially in the power sector. ET scheme (ETS) or other mechanisms need designing to create an incentive for investment in higher efficiency and technologies and to Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS). The ETS as the climate protection instrument of the EU can become a heavy burden (high fuel and electricity prices, less security of supply) or it can create a climate for modernization of fossil fuel power plants. The suggestion in this paper of fuel-specific benchmark system for CO2 allocation after 2012 can combine the emission levels to be reached with a strong drive to invest, the necessary investment security, transparency and the principle of proportionality. A Benchmark System as recommended by coal industry could adapt to the different circumstances in the long term and comply with EU energy and environmental policy objectives.

The presence of high-grade massive sulphides near York Harbour, Newfoundland has been known since the turn of the century. In the early 1900's a small, massive-sulphide deposit was worked by conventional hand methods and yielded about 100, 000 tons of high grade copper-zinc ore. Since that time, a number of mining companies have held options on the property and an exploration adit was driven along the fourth level of the original mine. Underground drilling revealed several additional massive sulphide lenses in the range of 10, 000 to 60, 000 tons (Fig. 1). The problem facing Long Lac Mineral Exploration Ltd. when they undertook an option on the property in 1969, was to outline any possible extensions to the known sulphide lenses which were outside the reach of underground drills and to search for new ore deposits which might double the known reserves into a feasible project for development. GEOLOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: The geology is typical of many massive sulphide deposits within volcanic rocks in the Canadian Shield. The sulphide pods appear to occur along a complex andesite-basalt contact. Identification of the two volcanic types is difficult since they are almost the same colour. The most direct means of identification is by the slight difference in their magnetic susceptibilities. Pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite are the main minerals in the sul¬phide lenses. The ore is massive, differing in density from the host rock by at least 1.0 gm/cc. There is little pyrrhotite or magnetite associated with the sulphides, so there is no appreciable difference in magnetic susceptibility between the sulphides and the basalt. The last decade has witnessed a rapid development and application of slurry and EPB type tunnel boring machines. Both soft ground types are able to excavate tunnels in unstable ground conditions below the water table with positive face support. The most significant component of the excavation process is the cutterhead and tool con-figuration were the excavation and face support meets the geological challenge. The TBM downstream processes cannot take place unless the cutterhead and tools effectively do their job. This paper will review the current state of the art design for both slurry and EPB cutterheads and highlight both common as well as geological specific design features.

INTRODUCTION Before a mine is planned in detail, a preliminary analysis is often conducted. This preplanning permits the mining engineer to make a rapid assessment as to whether or not a particular mining property warrants further consideration. In fact, a properly conducted preplanning phase can come within 10% to 20% of the actual results, thereby saving the mining engineer valuable time before committing himself to a fine-tuned analysis. The questions to be answered by mine preplanning are (1) What will be the operating conditions for the mine? and (2) How long will it take to complete the project? To answer these questions, calculations dealing with reserve estimation, production planning, man- power planning, and project scheduling are conducted. The following sections discuss these various phases of mine preplanning in greater detail. RESERVE ESTIMATION The estimation of the various characteristics of a reserve, such as quantity, grade, and thickness, is an ongoing process throughout the life of a mining venture. However, the reserve-estimation phase of mine planning is more closely associated with the preplanning phase. There are many different techniques employed in reserve estimation of solid mineral deposits; variations among them are introduced because of such considerations as ease of application or level of accuracy. In any event, each technique is developed in the following manner: (1) the mineral body is represented pictorially and then subdivided into blocks related to one or more samples of exploration data, (2) the area and volume of each block is determined, (3) the volumes are converted to representative tonnages (or, for example, grades), and (4) the results are tabulated. To illustrate this procedure, the polygonal (area-of- influence) technique will be presented due to its ease of application, flexibility in dealing with different deposits, and general acceptance. The polygonal method assumes that all characteristics of a mineral body extend halfway between a point of observation and any other point of observation. The explored portion of the mineral body is represented by polygonal prisms whose depths relate to the characteristic in question (grade, thickness, etc.) and whose plane bases relate to the area of influence of each point of observation (drill hole, etc.) as shown in Fig. 1. The polygons must be constructed in a definite order, usually clockwise and from the periphery to the center of the deposit. Table 1 can then be used to calculate the characteristics in question. Since, by definition, the polygonal method assumes that the characteristics of a mineral body extend half- way between points of observation, it becomes readily apparent that the evaluation of a vertical-drill hole exploration program requires that the sides of the polygons be formed by the intersection of perpendicular bisectors (Fig. 2). Figs. 3 and 4 show correct and incorrect construction of the polygons. The criterion for correct construction of the polygons is that all points within a particular polygon must be closer to its rallying point than those located in any other polygon. This is clearly not the case for certain points that are located in the polygon containing rallying point B in Fig. 4. Although this method can be used where the drill holes are irregularly spaced, calculations become less tedious when a square net (Fig. 5) or a chessboard (Fig. 6) grid is adopted. The numbers shown in Figs. 5 and 6 represent the relative weight for each of the shaded areas. In general, the greater the number of polygons, the more continuous the mineral body, and the more regular the grid, then the more accurate the computations will be. PRODUCTION PLANNING Before an acceptable evaluation of the production potential of a mine can be determined, a thorough exploration program should be conducted. It seems obvious that the nature and properties of the deposit and adjacent strata, the presence of impurities, and other mining conditions should be adequately determined prior to production planning and equipment selection. The lack of sufficiently detailed knowledge of the many mining parameters has led to the failure of numerous operations. For example, targeted production tonnages and equipment sizes for a coal mine are intimately related to the seam thickness. Needless to say the quality of information that is gathered from an exploration program can have a tremendous impact on the production plan. Two-thirds of the world copper produced in 1979 incurred cash costs between $0.35 and $0.89 per lb, averaging $0.62 per lb. North American costs are higher at $0.48, $0.88, and $0.68 per lb, respectively. Variable cash costs are $0.20, $0.58, and $0.39 per lb for the world; $0.29, $0.63, and $0.46 per lb for North America. Cash costs are relevant for comparing existing operations and evaluating market pricing during periods of excess supply. Analysis of full costs of production (cash costs plus income taxes, profit, and non-cash items) becomes relevant in evaluating the incentive price required to develop new production plants. In mid-1979 this cost (incentive price) was about $1.10 per lb; it is expected to approach $2.00 per lb by 1985.

The advantages derived from the use of pellet burdens in blast furnaces are so great, that hematite ores are being converted into pellets in greater quantities each year. The conversion of these ores into pellets appears on the surface to be relatively simple. In reality, this is not so. Serious difficulties are encountered in drying these pellets that do not exist in the drying of taconite concentrate pellets. The ores that present problems are goethite and earthy hematites. Green pellets prepared from these ores have very law shock temperatures, 200-600° F. The shock temperature of a green pellet according to our definition is the highest initial temperature to which a green pellet may be exposed without suffering decrepitation. Decrepitation may involve spalling, fracturing or total disintegration. The poor shock properties of these green pellets result from the inability of the vaporized water to escape freely and easily as it is formed with¬out affecting the integrity of the pellet. As a consequence, the pellets must be carefully dried prior to induration. This careful treatment is costly. The slow drying process restricts productivity and requires larger furnaces than desired. The use of an additive to elevate the shock temperature of the green pellets would increase productivity. Bentonite is used in some pellet plants to improve balling but it raises the shock temperature only slightly. Nalco became interested in the shock temperature problem because of its activity in the development of organic pelletizing aids for taconite concentrates. The findings reported here are an outgrowth of our experimental work on the development of shock temperature additives.

INTRODUCTION The basic premise of the ideas presented in this paper are as follows: Engineers believe that "theoretically" it will work. Operators ask what they must do to make it work. And, people can screw it up. r Today the challenges conf onted during the engineering, startup and operation of mines are becoming more complex. As mining and processing professionals, we are called upon to trav­el all over the world, are subjected to a wide variety of climates and must deal with a numerous cultures and people. Historically, for the majority of the people working in the mining industry, the primary challenges related to projects have focused on the differing perspectives of the disciplines involved. For example, geologists focus on resources and reserves, mining engineers relate to tons or tonnes, metallurgists count ounces or pounds or kilograms of product, mechanics emphasize availabil­ity, human resources personnel deal with absentee rates and turnover and accountants watch the bottom line ($$'s). As the world has become "smaller" and the mining industry has become more globalized, the puzzle is becoming increasingly difficult. Even the most experienced in the crowd of mining profes­sionals are oftentimes surprised by the types of problems that are encountered. Try as we may, we cannot anticipate the complex­ity of dealing with the human side of an operation.

Kidd Creek mine has recently completed upgrades of its primary ventilation systems enabling it to maintain a delivery of 1200 m3/s to continue mining ore zones extending to over 3000 m below surface. Following these upgrades the mine initiated a multi-stage review of their ventilation usage. The focus of these reviews, ranged from a brainstorming session of invited experts, through an evaluation of production plans to a detailed analysis of production data to determine if the ventilation system could be run more efficiently, thereby reducing the mine?s power consumption and associated operating costs. The initial review identified 1500 kW of installed fan power that could be eliminated from the primary ventilation system. The benefits of the subsequent analyses, so far, are not as measurable. The second and third analyses, respectively using long range production plan data and historic production data to determine ventilation requirements based upon diesel equipment, did not agree. Both were shown to have limitations, the future based analysis underestimating, and the historical analysis overestimating the requirements. Regardless of the failings of each method, important outcomes were achieved from the detailed analyses, namely, the ability for a mine to meet a forward analysis prediction of airflow depends on its ability to adjust the ventilation to meet the dynamic nature of the mining process. Also, to minimize total ventilation requirements, a mine must regularly redistribute its airflow; this not only reduces the total volume requirement but also increases the variability of the delivered flows which can provide further operational savings. Since the detailed analyses, the Kidd Creek mine has implemented a more frequent ventilation review and redistribution procedure; consequently, it now operates with an average delivery of 930 m3/s, which is 23% lower than in 2005 at the start of the review process.

The properties, origin and industrial uses of kaolin clay are briefly reviewed. The general waterwashed beneficiation process is described. Yost aspects of filtration and solids-liquid separation as practiced in the kaolin industry are mentioned along with devices that are currently in the developmental stage. The paper focuses heavily on the well known art of rotary vacuum filtration, including general construction and operating details. Devices under investigation that might be used to mechanically or electrically dewater clay slurries to higher cake solids levels than can be achieved with rotary vacuum filters are described briefly.

A comprehensive, site specific water management plan is of primary importance to the successful implementation, operation and decommissioning of any mining project. Formulation of a plan requires an orderly planning process consisting of identifying problems, establishing planning criteria based on the guidelines and requirements of regulatory agencies, and an iterative procedure of identifying, investigating, and evaluating plan elements and alternative plans. A typical uranium surface mine operation consists of a mine pit or pits, spoil pile areas, crusher, processing plant, and tailings disposal area. A water control plan addresses the problems of diversion of natural runoff from undisturbed areas around the mine; and diversion, collection, and treatment of runoff from within the mine area. A water control plan is required to determine the location and size of appropriate control and detention structures; their cost; and the schedule for permit activity, design, and construction. The plan must be formulated to meet the requirements of both the State and Federal regulatory agencies.

Inco Limited operates nine underground mines on the rim of the Sudbury Basin. These operations are situated near the City of Sudbury, 589 km (365 miles) west of Montreal, and 363 km (225 miles) north of Toronto. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, and the principal minerals are pentlandite, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 51,000 tons per day. The total volume of fresh air supplied to the nine mines is six million cubic feet per minute. There are 50 main fans in operation at these mines, powered by electric motors totalling 11,200 kw (15,000 hp). The trend in metal mining during recent years towards mechanization and high-tonnage production methods has greatly increased ventilation requirements. The flow of air must quickly dilute and carry away diesel exhaust fumes, dust created by mining operations, and the fumes of the explosives used in blasting. Mechanical ventilation is required to obtain the necessary volume and control, as natural ventilation pressures alone are, for the most part, inadequate and unreliable. In the event of a mine fire or other needs, close control of ventilation is essential. There are two unique heating systems presently in operation at Inco: Creighton Natural Heat Ex- changer and Stobie Ice Stopes.

During past years the most difficult problem presented to the coal preparation engineer has been the cleaning of fine coal, The problem of handling fine coals is more involved than the coarser sizes, because the higher surface moisture contents complicate screening, and the larger percentages of fine near size material complicate separating problems. Low gravity high capacity specific gravity separations were not possible with equipment available at that time. Coal preparation engineers did develop machines that would effect a separation of the fines, however, to maintain a high efficiency, the point of separation had to be a relatively easy one. The more difficult separations were made in the coarse coal sections of the washeries, and the fines were generally cleaned at higher specific gravities in equipment such as tables, feldspar jigs, rheolaveurs, etc. Clean products from both processes were mixed, resulting in overall lower ash contents, During the last several years, however, we have been confronted with increasing demands ZGP more precise separations of finer coals to still further reduce ash contents. A study was begun and a program instigated to improve the cleaning of fine coal, The result of this endeavor was the development of the new cycloidal heavy medium cyclone.

The ninth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Minneapolis, MN. A total of 33 students presented their work at the contest. The competition began in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes. The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the contest. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and, as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates, and the prizes are designated accordingly. At the graduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third through seventh $200 each, and all others $125 each. At the undergraduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third place $250, and all others $125 each.
