5 miles of soft ground tunnel excavation for the SAWS W‑6 project finished months early despite difficult conditions. Success was achieved using TBMs and other equipment built long before most of the crew was even born. The old school means and methods easily adapted to the conditions encountered and were key to the project’s success. Unfortunately, an industry trend is to specify more “advanced” equipment which can sacrifice adaptability or productivity for a perceived reduction in risk. This case history discusses when traditional methods may be the best option.

As more phosphate deposits are discovered and new mines are developed, the necessity of critically evaluating various rocks for phosphoric acid production recurs ever more frequently. This need is accentuated by the increasing number of, fertilizer plants being constructed on deep water at various locations to serve world markets and to take advantage of locally-available sulfur or sulfur-bearing ores. A major proportion of all phosphate rock mined is consumed by wet-process plants and this acid in turn is consumed, usually captively, in the manufacture of fertilizer. It is apparent, therefore, that the first question asked by the developer of a new deposit is - How will it work in a wet-process plant? and conversely, when developing a deep water, project, one of the early studies required is - Which of the available rocks shall we use? What is the correct price to pay? How do we compare one rock with another? The economic importance of even minor aspects of these questions

The world's barite reserve base is adequate for at least 100 years at the current consumption rate. China, India and the United States are expected to remain the leading producing countries, and the United States will continue to be the largest consumer. None of the known substitutes for barium sulfate are expected to impact existing applications. World production in 1995 was 4.41 Mt (4.86 million st), which is about 50% of capacity. Consumption is directly proportional to hydrocarbon well installation activity. Imports are expected to continue to supply more than half of the US requirements.

This paper will describe the development, testing, performance evaluation, and in particular, the utilization for a mining application of revolutionary new mini-disc cutters for use in micro-tunneling and small-and medium-diameter tunneling or mining. It will begin by describing the engineering, testing, and development of rock cutting technology in conjunction with the Rock Boring Laboratories of the Colorado School of Mines. During initial tests, the five-inch cutters were able to penetrate limestone and welded tuff with compressive strengths of 9,000 psi to 24,000 psi. High excavation rates at low thrust and power were achieved with considerably less cutter wear than all previously available conventional discs. Eventually, the discs-with their modified carbide-insert cutting rings, high-load capacity bearings and cantilevered mountings-were able to facilitate the rapid and cost-effective installation of micro-and small-diameter pipes and tunnels in large cobbles and even solid rock, with compressive strengths exceeding 30,000 psi. This paper will also discuss the further development of the machine's cutter head and discs to full-scale site use on a range of tunnel machine sizes and soil conditions, including rock, boulders, and soft ground. Potential mining applications include the installation of tunnels to pro-vide ventilation, emergency escape routes, water drainage, compressed air, electricity, and sand-fill.

The reduction of accidents will play an ever increasing role in the mining of coal and hardrock ores as mining operations become more mechanized, the equipment becomes more costly and sophisticated, and as mineral production exploits deeper and more marginal coal and ore deposits. The most effective means to reduce accidents is through the design of mining systems and equipment. Results of safety research by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to design safer coal extraction and haulage systems and to reduce electrical accidents are presented.

Tar sand deposits in the. Stare of Utah contain more than 25 billion barrels of in-place bitumen, Although thirty times smaller than the well-known Athabasca tar sands, Utah tar sands do represent a significant domestic energy resource comparable to the national crude oil reserves (31.3 billion barrels), The term "tar sand" refers to a consolidated mixture of bitumen and sand, Based upon a detailed analysis of the physical and chemical properties of both the bitumen and the sand, a hot-water extraction process for Utah tar sands is currently being developed in our laboratories at the University of Utah. This process involves intense agitation of the tar sand in a hot caustic solution and subsequent separation of the bitumen by a modified froth flotation technique., Experimental results indicated that, for a given tar sand sample, percent solids and caustic concentration were the two most important variables controlling the performance of the digestion stage, These variables were identified by means of an experimental, factorial design, in which coefficients of separation greater than 0.90 were realized. Although preliminary in nature, the experimental evidence gathered in this investigation seems to indicate that a hot-water extraction process for Utah tar sands would allow for the efficient utilization of this important energy resource.

Introduction Technological advances in mining and processing have started the domestic mining and mineral industry back on the road to competitiveness. A massive trade deficit, however, coupled with foreign competition and more government regulations threaten to slow this recovery. So say mining executives in Colorado and Minnesota. These industry decision-makers agree that their challenge is to continue the technical innovations of their industry. The journey back to profitability and competitiveness means improved products, they say, but at lower production costs. At separate gatherings in January, officials in both states said that they believe their industry is up to the challenge. Worker attitudes will have to change, they understand, and management styles will need adjusting. And, while they are willing to make the necessary adjustments, they are going to need some help. Or, at the very least, less interference from the federal government. Foreign markets, all but closed to American products, must be opened up on a reciprocal basis. The nation's $170 billion trade deficit is a priority item that can no longer be ignored. And, closer to home, federal and state environmental regulations concerning mineral production must themselves be monitored. 1987 in Colorado While Colorado's service and trade industries should have a fairly good 1987, the state's mining industry can expect another disappointing year filled with layoffs and declining profits, according to the Colorado Mining Association. Once again, foreign competition and government regulations are seen as the main reasons for the mineral industry's woes. And state mining officials see little relief until at least the 1990s. Speaking to a group of reporters at its annual press briefing in Denver, CMA officials said Colorado's overall nonfuel mineral production is expected to fluctuate between a flat and declining growth trend. Mining employment in the state is expected to fall by 400 people this year, to about 7500. In 1981, Colorado mines employed as many as 17,800 people. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the employment rate in mining in the state grew by 12% annually, according to a summary report compiled by the CMA. Last year, worldwide molybdenum production continued to exceed demand US moly producers, therefore, were forced to continue their familiar path of production cutbacks, as well as workforce reductions. And some molybdenum mines in the US closed altogether, the CMA report stated. In Colorado, Amax's Climax and Henderson molybdenum mines operated at about 50% of combined capacity. Climax employed about 200 people at the beginning of 1987, producing about 5.4 kt/d (6000 stpd) or ore. Henderson employed about 700 people, producing about 24.5 kt/d (27,000 stpd) of ore. In coal, the number of licensed coal mines in Colorado has declined from 124 in 1960 to 43 in 1986, of which only 23 were producing. Once a stable source of employment and production, the metallurgical coal industry in the state has only one surviving metallurgical coal mine, Mid-Continent's Orchard Valley mine. High production and transportation costs, weakness in the US steel industry, and a weak market position have contributed to the decline, the summary reported. The problem of recovering gold from a cyanide solution has been plaguing metallurgists since the cyanidation process was discovered in Glasgow, Scotland.1 The "perfect" method has never been found and this paper will not purport to fill that gap. But we, at Gold Fields, feel that we have developed a workable, cheap and efficient method of producing a refinery - ready product that has several distinct advantages over conventional electroplating techniques. The Gold Fields replating system is presently being used at their Ortiz and Mesquite operations. In short, the system electroplates the gold out on stainless steel wool, instead of mild steel wool as is usually done, then replates the gold by reversing the current onto stainless steel plates. By doing this the steel wool can be reused many times, the gold can be scraped off the plates cleanly and quickly, the operating costs are reduced and the slag production is greatly reduced.

Coal gasification solid residue (slag) contains unconverted carbon (char), which is considered an impurity for utilization applications of slag. Under this study, table concentration was used to process approximately 24,000 pounds of a nominal-3.4 mm gasifier slag (-85% ash) to separate high (-100%) ash slag from low (-50%) ash char. The results indicated a nearly ideal separation of the slag from the char for sizes coarser than about 1 mm. An overall slag yield of 71 % was obtained. The slag was sufficiently clean to be used as feed material for the production of expanded lightweight aggregate. The recovered char had an ash content of about 47% and was a nominal -1mm in size.

The utilization of high sulfur Illinois coal by utility plants has been decreasing since the enactment of 1990 Clean Coal Air Act Amendment. Illinois coal producers can make their coal saleable by offering the choice of taking the combustion by-products from the utility plants and placing them in the abandoned sections of their mines. To be competitive, however, coal producers need to select an environmentally acceptable transportation-handling-placement system through which the cost-per-ton of by-product disposed can be minimized. In this paper, a few such systems are presented. The favorable operating range of each system is determined in terms of distance and tonnage. A case study is given whereby cost analysis is conducted for an underground coal mine receiving by-products from two Illinois utility plants.

The United States began exporting coal in the late 1800'5, at first in very small quantities to Canada and beginning in 1897 and 1896, to the east coast of South America. Shipments to European countries began on a very limited basis in 1902 and these shipments increased gradually until World War One when shipments overseas increased from the 8 million tons per year level to 22 million tons. After the war exports dropped as fast as they had increased and, with the exception of exports to Canada, remained at very low levels until just after World War 11 when the United States again emerged as a major coal exporter. World War II left the coal industries of Europe in ruin. As the United States was the only country able to supply the large quantities of coal at reasonable prices needed for reconstruction of the European economy, the U. S. coal exports overseas expanded rapidly to 42.5 million tons in 1947. Additionally, we shipped 25 -2 million tons of coal to Canada In that year for a total export of 68.7 million tons. Unfortunately, that level was not reached again until 1957 when exports reached an all-time high of 76 .4 million tons- -a high I might add that has not been reached since.

At the first workshop on Surface Subsidence Due to Underground Mining (1 981 ) , Yarbrough delivered a paper (1 ) describing the mine subsidence insurance program in Illinois operated as the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund (IMSIF) . In this paper we will present claims data and describe changes that have occurred in the Illinois Insurance Code during the first six years the IMSIF has been in existence. The change in the original Illinois Public Act 80-1 41 3 that most affected the public was an amendment increasing the maximum amount of mine subsidence insurance avail- able on a structure from $50,000 to $100,000. Seventy-two counties in Illinois have been undermined for minerals, primarily bituminous coal. In Franklin County (.in the southern part of the state) 36 percent of the land area has been undermined for coal extraction. In St. Clair and Madison Counties , two counties that include the St. Louis Metropolitan area along the western border of the state, 10 percent and 7 percent of the land surface have been undermined. Most of the undermined area in the two counties is beneath urbanized land. In 34 counties, approximately 1 percent or more of the land surface has been undermined (2). The first shaft mine in Illinois was sunk in the city of Belleville (east of St. Louis) in 1842, and the mines of early vintage have initiated the majority of the mine subsidence claims. Data compiled from the first six years reveals that most Illinois mine subsidence events that affect structures occur over abandoned mines where early methods of high- extraction mining practices were used. Maps of these mines operated in the 1800s reveal irregular development of room and pillar areas and poorly defined production areas (panels). Rooms in the mines varied from 15 to 40 feet in width and the pillars varied in width from 5 to 40 feet. The pillars were often long and narrow. Recovery rates in mines that operated prior to 1900 generally averaged 50 per- cent, and extraction rates as high as 80 percent have been documented (2). Some pillar robbing occurred.

CoaLiquid, Inc. (CLI) has been in the coal- oil-mixture (COM) business for over five (5) years. The initial pilot processing facility was replaced by a 2000 barrel per day commercial production facility in August of 1979. For over two (2) years CLI has been expanding its efforts and conducting large scale production and combustion demonstrations successfully in many locations across the United States. To facilitate the marketing effort, CLI has recently constructed a special trailer containing all equipment needed for a temporary COM retrofit. CoaLiquid has conducted commercial scale combustion demonstrations in the following types of combustion units: kilns, calciners, industrial boilers, blast furnaces and driers.

"Cyanide heap leaching of gold ores in areas with extremely low winter temperatures requires special considerations to prevent freezing of the leach solution. Factors that impact the solution temperature include ore temperature at the time of stacking and during operation, burial of drip irrigation lines, use of geomembrane covers and heating of the leach solution. Thermodynamic modeling was performed to simulate expected ore and solution temperatures under different operating strategies for Kaminak Gold’s Coffee gold project in the Yukon Territory. Mean monthly temperatures at the site ranged from a low of -22.5 °C (-8.5 °F) to a high of 13.6 °C (56.4 °F), while in situ ore temperatures ranged from -0.5° to about -1.5 °C (31 ° to 29 °F). The modeling results were used to optimize the operational parameters and indicated that a combination of drip line burial and heating of the leach solution during the winter months was required to maintain solution temperatures above freezing during the initial years of stacking, although as the size of the heap increased, heating was no longer necessary.Modeling objectivesThe successful operation of a cyanide heap leach under extremely cold winter temperatures requires the implementation of operational strategies to prevent freezing of the leach solution and the ore within the heap. Thermodynamic modeling of the heap provides the means to quantify the effectiveness of these different operational parameters on maintaining the required operating temperatures to avoid freezing within the heap. As energy requirements in the United States expand with the growth of the Nation, use of coal also can be expected to increase. This optimistic outlook for the coal industry is based on our vast reserves of high quality coals and the possibility of converting coal to end uses other than electricity and metallurgical coke. Potentially, millions of tons of coal might be needed in the form of gas and liquid fuels to supplement our reserves and imports of these natural products. Exactly when they will enter the economy on a large scale depends on many factors. On January 1, 1960, the estimated remaining reserves of coal were 1-1/2 trillion tons, about 50 percent of which is bituminous coal. In 1965, the production of bituminous coal and lignite passed the 500-million-ton mark, emphasizing the steady upward trend from the recent low of 403 million tons, and if the present rate of increase continues within the next five years, output should pass the alltime high of 631 million tons achieved in 1947.

Limestone and Dolomite quarries located near Salto-De-Pirapora, Arroia Grande Gaucho, Conde Francisco and Candioita probably represent the closest, major sources of high quality lime and cement grade carbonate rocks to the major population center of Sao Paulo Brazil. The nearest major city to most of the limestone - dolomite sources is Sorocaba and Palma. All of the mining properties visited during this study are located in the state of Rio Grande Do Sul at approximately -32 degrees south latitude and -52 degrees west longitude, southwest of the major port city of Porto Alegre.

Spalling and rockburst are unwanted brittle failures at the boundaries of underground excavations that are commonly observed in hard rock and high-stress environments at significant depths, although, spalling has also been observed in comparatively shallow soft rocks. The crack initiation (CI) stress threshold (representing the stress level at which new micro cracks begin to form in an intact rock) is widely used to establish the in-situ spalling strength, and is generally regarded as the lower limit of the long-term rock strength. This study analyses the evolution of CI and other mechanical properties for a high-porosity sandstone with an average UCS of 38 MPa under unconfined cyclic compressive loading. The results indicate that rock properties are variably affected by cyclic loading with; no significant effect on Youngs Modulus; a moderate increase in Poisson’s ratio and fracture angle; a moderate decrease in UCS; and a major reduction in the CI stress threshold. All of these changes were generally amplified by cyclic loading at higher stresses. From the results, it is concluded that rockburst and spalling limit in underground structures may reduce over time if the rock is subject to repetitive cyclic loading, and that the reductions will be greater for higher cyclic stresses. This may be a significant factor in the design and operation of some deep underground structures.

With the rapidly rising cost for electrical energy and the long range pre¬dictions for continued rising costs and even possible energy shortages, operation of rod, ball, autogenous and partial autogenous grinding circuits to efficiently utilize the power delivered to the mills will be demanded. This calls for a method to evaluate grinding circuit performance that is accurate, reliable and readily usable as an operating tool by supervisory, technical and operating personnel. Neither the Rittinger and Kick theories of comminution,(1) which preceded the Bond Theory by more than 50 years, had a mathematical means that could be used to predict and evaluate the performance of crushers and grinding mills used to comminute ores and rocks. This severly limited the practical use of these two theories, which were contradictory to each other. They have been superseded by the Bond Third Theory of Commnution.(1)

The Cities Service Company's Pinto Valley mine and concentrator lie about 6 miles west of the town of Miami, Arizona at an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet above sea level. The concentrator started its first ballmill in July 74 and all six were available by November. Every effort was made to reduce capital costs, consequently, each unit process was studied critically to eliminate excess capital costs without loss of efficiency. Equipment selection was made on the basis of proven dependability and operating costs rather than on low bids. The result is a very workable plant with some important innovations. The concentrator is nominally 40,000 tons per day. The flowsheet is typical with 3 stage crushing, single stage closed circuit grinding, flotation, regrinding of rougher concentrate and cleaning of the rougher concentrate. At 6,898 ft below surface, the historic No. 9 shaft at Resolution Copper near Superior, AZ is now the second deepest single lift mine shaft in the United States and connects to the deepest single lift mine shaft in the U.S., Resolution Copper’s No. 10 Shaft (6,989 feet). The shafts serve as ventilation and access for future underground development of what could one day become one of the most significant copper mines in the United States. It is from the base of No. 9 and No. 10 shafts that hundreds of employees of Resolution Copper, a joint venture of Rio Tinto and BHP, hope will soon be given the go ahead to begin driving lateral tunnels to reach a copper deposit that is estimated to contain 28 Mt or 40 billion pounds of copper. Copper was recently added to the U.S. Geological Survey’s (UGGS) critical minerals list, in large part because of increasing demand. A study by S&P Global Energy & Market Intelligence “Copper in the age of AI: Challenges of electrification” released on Jan. 8, 2025, “identifies a transformative trajectory for copper demand, projecting a surge from 28 Mt (31 million st) in 2025 to 42 Mt (46.3 million st) by 2040 – a 50 percent increase that underscores the metal's pivotal role in multiple technological and economic domains.” The surge in demand is driven in large part by the global energy transition, electrification of vehicles, growth of artificial intelligence and data centers, and most recently robotics. Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions have increased the focus on the need for the United States to secure more of its own mineral supply chain. S&P Global’s report is one of many warnings that while copper demand has accelerated rapidly, future supply is being held back. Resolution Copper stands out as one example of a known mineral deposit remaining locked in the United States’ complex and lengthy permitting slog.
