Kinetic models are the most important tool for predicting and evaluating the performance of flotation circuits. Gilsonite is a natural fossil resource similar to an oil asphalt, high in asphaltenes. Here, in order to determine the kinetic order and flotation rate of a gilsonite sample, flotation experiments were carried out in both rougher and cleaner stages. Experiments were conducted using the combinations of oil–MIBC and gas oil–pine oil, with one test without collector and frother. Five kinetic models were applied to the data obtained from the flotation tests using MATLAB software. Statistical analysis showed that the results of the experiment with oil–MIBC were highly in compliance with all models. Kinetic constants (k) were calculated as 0.1548 (s−1 ) and 0.0450 (s−1 ) for rougher and cleaner stages, respectively. Rougher and cleaner tests without collector and frother also matched all models well (R2 > 0.98), with k values of 0.2163 (s−1 ) and 0.284 (s−1 ), respectively. The relationship between flotation rate constant, maximum combustible recovery, and particle size showed that the maximum flotation combustible recovery and flotation rate were obtained in the size range of −250 + 106 μm in the rougher and cleaner stages. The combustible recovery and flotation rate were higher in the rougher flotation process than in the cleaner stage.

Groundwater remediation is growing in occurrence in the western United States. Groundwater remediation programs are regulated by state water quality statutes. The remedial action plans implemented under these statutes may conflict with well-established existing rights to withdraw groundwater for beneficial use. This paper discusses how the states of Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico administer conflicts between the need to withdraw and remediate groundwater with the existing rights of others to withdraw groundwater for beneficial purposes.

Recent ore pass failures have underlined the need for improved designs, standards, structural monitoring methods, and better hang up prevention and removal techniques. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating methods to improve safety during transport of ore in ore passes. Design criteria and hang-up prevention and remediation strategies involve studies of the effects of static and dynamic ore and waste rock loads on chutes, walls, gates, and support structures. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate the response of various ore pass designs to a wide range of ore loading conditions. A full-scale mock-up of actual ore pass and chute assemblies was duplicated and tested for load response. Data from a particle flow code and the mock-ups were com-pared. Loads on an active ore pass chute were measured.

The relationship between coal characteristics and power plant performance has become a matter of increasing interest to utilities. This relationship can affect the value of coals, decisions as to coal washing, setting penalties for delivery of coal that fails to meet specifications, and justifying buying better coals (at higher costs) before public utility commissions. The study described in this paper was directed to identifying how coal characteristics impact on boilers and related coal and gas handling systems. TVA data for the period 1962-1980 was the basis for the study. Models were developed for boiler efficiency, boiler availability, and maintenance costs as a function of such coal characteristics as ash, sulfur, and moisture content and boiler age. Boiler load and maintenance efforts were considered as variables in some of the models, but were found not to be statistically significant. Although the results of this study are strictly applicable to only the TVA system, they can serve as guides or first approximations for other utilities.

Resource Engineering and Development, Inc. is designing and building a portable 150 to 225 TPD, flotation-cyanide leach plant with unitized, skid-mounted components. This plant design, with its portability, low capital investment, and high recovery of silver and gold from many partially oxidized ores, is well suited to treat many small, high-grade deposits, old waste dumps, and old mill tailing piles. A description is given of flotation and/or cyanide leach tests run on about 17 partially oxidized, newly mined ores; waste dump materials; placer slimes; and old mill tailings.

Copper electrowinning operations have dramatically improved their ability to produce high quality copper at low costs over the past several decades. Even so, some fundamental knowledge is still lacking that could allow operations to run even more efficiently. For example, a rule of thumb exists that estimates a current efficiency loss of 2-3% per gram per liter of iron in the electrolyte. While several laboratory studies have been performed that demonstrate this rule of thumb is likely true, no definitive relationship exists. In this paper, the first steps in developing a definitive relationship are presented. The effective diffusivity of ferric ions in synthetic copper electrowinning solutions was measured using chronoamperometry and the Cottrell equation. The effective diffusivity of ferric ion was determined as a function of electrolyte concentration and temperature. Synthetic electrolytes were then used in laboratory-scaled copper electrowinning experiments, where relationships between current efficiency and solution composition were found to exist under stagnant conditions. Gold-bearing outcrops were discovered in 1862 by Union soldiers garrisoned at Needles, CA, near the northwest corner of the future State of Arizona. Sporadic mining began several years later, but engineered shaft sinking and mill construction were not adopted at Oatman and the neighboring camp of Goldroad until about 1900. Geological interpretations in 1915 enabled major production during the next decade. In the late-1930s, USSR&M built a new mine and mill in Gold Road and the District flourished until closure by Federal Order L-208 in October 1942. For about a decade, Oatman’s mines were among the largest gold producers in the American West.

As our nation annually increases its total output of goods and services, as has been the trend, the consumption of steel and its most basic raw material - iron ore - also must increase, To deliver the most economical unit of iron ore to the blast furnace, each segment of the transportation system must be co-ordinated and utilized to its highest degree of efficiency. "The Copper Mountain Mine is located in Princeton British Columbia, Canada and produces 80 – 90 million pounds of copper annually, as well as gold and silver by-products. The ore processing plant has a conventional SAG/ball mill circuit with inline pebble crushing, followed by flotation. At most plants, much time is spent evaluating and optimizing the comminution and flotation circuits. The cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant: They define the circulating load in the comminution circuit and provide the classification that ensures liberated material is passed through to flotation. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput in flotation. For such an impactful unit operation, cyclones have historically been under-instrumented. Consider as well that the cyclones are typically located at the highest elevation in a plant, and it becomes clear why they often underperform. Copper Mountain Mine recognized the critical role that cyclones filled in their plant and worked to optimize their operation through the implementation of a Portage Cyclone Detection (PCD) system to identify plugging and roping incidents, Portage Pumpbox Control (PPC) to manage the flow to the cyclones, and AwaRE to control the grinding circuit. As a result, cyclones overflow stability has increased, switching out a roped or plugged cyclone now happens within seconds rather than many minutes, and both the grinding and flotation circuits perform better. INTRODUCTION Cyclones are one of the most extensively used pieces of equipment within the mineral processing industry because of their simplistic operating and maintenance philosophies. The cyclones are commonly used as classifiers within the comminution circuit to control the grinding product particle size for satisfactory performance of downstream operations. The cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant and have a significant impact on the mineral processing plant operations. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput. Similarly, an inefficient cyclone operation may also lead to low or high recirculating loads that impact the efficiency of the comminution circuit. This highlights the importance to have proper stability in cyclone operation while implementing any plant-wide optimisation strategy."

The grinding process in the mining industry has seen an increased throughput to accomplish greater production and lower overall production costs. Up to 8-9 MW, a single motor can be connected to drive the mill through a pinion and ring gear. Above the single-pinion drive limit, the dual pinion approach was developed to allow two drive motors to be used. This allowed the mill input power to be increased to 16-18 MW. Recent developments in clutch and ring gear materials and design are allowing greater input powers of up to 20 MW to be considered. To avoid damage to the ring gear by uneven load sharing between the two motors, it is critical that the two machines accurately share load. This is typically achieved by either drives capable of controlling load torque between motors or using a GE proprietary control system that accurately controls the load torque from each motor.

Over the past several years, the combination of higher energy and steel costs and the recent commercial deployment of high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology in hard rock mining have led many multinational mining companies to evaluate the suitability of HPGR technology for their particular comminution circuits. HPGR technology is perceived to require a higher capital investment while delivering lower long-term operating costs. This paper undertakes a critical evaluation of this perception. By evaluating the capital and life-of-mine operating costs of competing circuit designs for soft, medium and hard ores, the HPGR break-even point can be identified, at which the incremental capital cost of an HPGR circuit is equivalent to the net present value of the projected operating cost reductions. For ores with hardness parameters above the break-even point, HPGR circuits could offer economic benefits, while for softer ores, SAG mill/ball mill/pebble crushing (SABC) circuits are likely to be more economical and energy efficient. This evaluation considers both an SABC reference circuit and a traditional stage crushing configuration. Other influential factors are also discussed.

In just over a generation, the United States bentonite industry has grown from almost a rake and shovel operation into one with a multimillion ton annual production rate and exports to all corners of the globe. Bentonite production, pressed to keep pace with the soaring demand, has increased more than 10 fold in the last 30 years. The worldwide demand for bentonite is expected to double during the next eight to ten years. It remains to be seen whether U.S. producers will be able to maintain the dominant position in the world market. It should be noted that accurate statistical information regarding production or market information is difficult or impossible to obtain abroad and also within the United States. Published information obtained in response to questionnaires of the Bureau of Mines tends to be on the conservative side. Bioleaching is a viable option for the processing of auriargentiferous refractory ores with high arsenic content. The application of mesophilic (A. ferrooxidans and ?L. ferrooxidans?) and thermophilic bacteria of the genus Sulfolobus (S. solfataricus and S. acidocaldarius) as oxidant treatment before the cyanidation of an industrial arsenical pyrite concentrate is presented. The results show that extraction of gold and silver increases due to bio-oxidation caused by mesophilic bacteria and results in a maximum gold recovery of 68%. In all strains studied, biooxidation resulted in an average silver recovery of 50%. The results showed that all evaluated strains were sensitive to solids content (5 to 20%) and average particle size (75 and 38 µm) of the concentrate.

"Estimating and managing the costs of complex infrastructure projects – in the planning/design and construction phases, for both owners and contractors – has been a challenge for decades. The more complex and technologically advanced the project, the greater the uncertainty, including potential risks that are important to owners and contractors, such as:• Cost risks to owners – meeting budget and schedule, maintaining public credibility.• Cost risks to contractors – profit, consequences of loss, impacts to reputation/future work.This concern has been addressed in various ways by the underground construction industry for some time (Reilly, 2001). In particular, while significant advances have been made in cost estimating for the planning and design phases (Reilly et al., 2004), that are important to agencies and political decision-makers, it is not apparent that these advances have been widely adopted for construction cost estimates. The reasons for this may relate to lowbid considerations – any method that tends to increase the contractor’s cost estimate, by including risk or likely costs, could lead to an erosion of the contractor’s competitive position – if others are not similarly required to include such costs.Different cost estimating methods produce different levels of information. Specifically, there is a large difference in the character and depth of information if a deterministic (quantities times price plus a contingency) and risk-based cost methods are used. It is this difference in character and depth of information that is the reason that risk-based cost estimating has potential value for owners and contractors. Figure 1 presents hypothetical cost results from deterministic and risk-based methods and illustrates some of these differences.In Fig. 1, the results for deterministic and risk-based cost estimates are given related to the potential profit or loss for a typical project. As is evident in this example, there is significant potential for costs to be realized that are higher than the proposal/bid value estimated using a deterministic approach, with a 15 percent probability of a loss. There is a 30 percent probability that the project will have a reduced profit. There is a 55 percent probability that the project will return a good profit. Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks for extracting high-level features from image data. In the present study, a soft sensor is proposed for the prediction of the flotation performance through froth features generated by the use of pre-trained convolutional neural networks. Several state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks (AlexNet, GoogLeNet, VGGNet, ResNet, and SqueezeNet) pre-trained on the ImageNet database are used to predict the metallurgical performance of two flotation systems. The first case study is a batch copper flotation system video-captured over a wide range of process conditions. The second case study is an industrial coal flotation column equipped with a continuous video recording system. The pre-trained networks are used to extract features from the froth images, and these features are subsequently used to predict the flotation conditions and performance. The prediction results by the pre-trained algorithms were compared with the traditional image processing algorithms. This demonstrates the ability of the pre-trained structures to generalize to images outside the ImageNet database. GoogLeNet outperforms other network architectures and provides more accurate predictions of the flotation process behavior and performance.

Rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals are increasingly becoming more important in our technological society and are used in many of our electronic devices (such as cell phones, computer monitors, wind turbines, etc.), batteries, and magnets. Measuring REE and critical minerals in ashed coal approximates the REE and critical minerals in the fly or bottom ash remaining after coal is burned at a power plant, where REE and other critical minerals could be leached. In New Mexico, there are 26 coal fields in Late Cretaceous rocks in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, Rare Earth, and Critical Minerals) program. Higher concentrations of REE (as much as 2103 ppm total REE) are found locally in ashed coals from the basins. More chemical and mineralogical analyses are required to fully understand the distribution and origin of REE in these deposits. As the demand for REE increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics, perhaps even from coal.

This paper focuses on the use of an integrated mine planing software package entitled "REMINE" which was constructed to provide a project evaluation tool for analysis of remining projects. Coal remining constitutes the affecting of sites which have had a past history of mining and have a pre-existing pollutional discharge. Such sites require a Best Professional Judgement (BPJ) analysis. The program was written to provide such an analysis with flexibility in the mine plans which can be analyzed. The process required for a BPJ analysis will be detailed and mine plan simulation performed to demonstrate the analysis.

The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located about 80 km (50 miles) north of Elko, NV. It produces approximately 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold. The joint venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining and 30% by Meridian Gold. Independence Mining is the operator. The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 by mining a series of open-pit mines. The discovery of deeper ores during early 1990s made it neccessary for the operation to mine a large portion of its annual production by underground mining methods. Underground production started in 1993 at the West Generator Mine. This was followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is scheduled to produce about 3.9 t (128,000 oz) in 1997.

Concentrate flowrates have been measured for the flotation of -100 mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer controlled 0.076 m x 3.5 m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height), air flow rate, and solid feed concentration. The size distribution of concentrate and tailings samples were determined. The results obtained show that the concentrate flow rate was independent of collection zone height, but dependent on the gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of these fundamental operational parameters.
