Mining and processing of bastnaesite ore, (Ln)CO3F, for lanthanides extraction is investigated in this paper. This series of elements proved to be applicable for a wide range of high-tech uses. In spite of the strategic importance of lanthanides, no LCA and energy analyses of their extraction have ever been published. We perform in this paper a Life Cycle Assessment of the Lanthanide production cycle, based on available database and literature data from Mountain Pass mine (USA) and other worldwide mining and processing sites, most of which in China. We investigated three main steps: mining, milling (including transport, grinding and drying), and flotation (for lanthanide chloride extraction). We do not investigate here the separation of pure oxides from lanthanide chloride, a compound which is also marketed as such. The conventional LCA was integrated by means of energy and emergy evaluations, aimed at investigating respectively the global energy cost and the environmental sustainability of the process. Indicators of material intensity, thermodynamic efficiency, and environmental impact (including LCA and ecological footprint impact categories) are calculated and discussed.

Flow rate into the thickener or clarifier a) As the flow rate increases into the thickener or clarifier ?retention time? decreases which causes a greater affect hydraulically on the settling solids. So as the flow rate increases it will generally mean an increase in flocculant dosing rate. b) As the flow rate decreases into the thickener or clarifier the retention time increases which reduces the hydraulic affect on settling, improving settling rates. This will generally mean that as the flow rate decreases, we will decrease the flocculant dose rate.

Field tests concerning a fog mesh method for fog removal are discussed. The first tests were performed at the Pyhäsalmi Mine, Finland. As this study gave promising results, further studies were completed at the Orivesi Mine. The results of these most recent field tests are presented and the two studies are compared. The Orivesi test set consisted of four materials. These included air filter fabric, fibrous filter fabric, a plastic greenhouse mesh, and an aluminium mosquito net. The variation of the Orivesi results was more noticeable than what was found previously. The best fog removal effect of all tests was achieved with the aluminium mosquito net, while the plastic green-house mesh performed worst. The humidity reduction by aluminium net was more profound than any of its precedents. More mesh materials will be tested in the near future.

Mine land reclamation is a comparatively new science-Although some mining companies point with pride to reclamation efforts of 20 to 30 years ago these were the exception rather than the rule. In the last ten years the skyrocket of environmental awareness has been awesome to behold. Future shock gripped mine operators everywhere as they struggled to cope with rapidly changing and escalating demands. The initial result was that two divergent points of view became dominant. Environmentalists said, "Put it back the way it was," and the miners responded, "Let's grow some weeds and hide it." These views are not surprising as they represent rather obvious alternative responses, albeit at opposite ends of the decision spectrum. The former case has prevailed more often than the latter, as most state and federal legislation -- both proposed and passed -- has required drastic alteration of the post-mining landscape so that evidence of prior mining is largely obliterated. An exception to this has been in porphyry copper country where the infrequent abandonment of mines has given emphasis to the second philosophy -establishing vegetative cover on mine waste materials. Now, it should come as no revelation to most mining people that both of these approaches to mine reclamation suffer from serious drawbacks when applied to open pit copper mines. First, whereas waste dumps and tailings dams can be vegetated with some aesthetic benefit, the massive presence of copper mining operations remains very prominent. It is difficult to conceal an open pit copper mine. Second, returning open pit copper mines lands to their original topography and productivity is simply not a reasonable alternative.

Due to disturbance of their traditional roosts, caves and tree hollows, more than half of the 44 bat species found in the United States and Canada now live in abandoned and inactive underground mines. The North American Bats and Mines Project was created two years ago by Bat Conservation International Inc. (BCI) in Austin, TX and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in response to the issue of mine closure and bat habitat. The partnership provides national coordination among government and private agencies and the mining industry to minimize the loss of bats living in mines. It also trains land managers on how to conduct cost-effective mine assessment and closure to protect both bats and people.

Potassium, together with nitrogen and phosphorous, is one of the essential nutrients required for growth. All living things need potash and so the major demand for potash (approximately 95% of, total demand) is as a fertilizer. Traditional agricultural techniques relied on the return of organic materials to the soil to provide nutrient requirements and maintain soil fertility, and the prevailing low crop yields required little in the way of added fertilizers. But agricultural productivity has increased dramatically in recent times, and this increase in crop yields requires substantial amounts of added nutrients to keep the soil fertile. It follows that there will always be a demand for potash. There is no substitute. Other fertilizers that contain N and P are complementary and not competing products.

The pumice and pumicite review arrived too late for the June issue. Estimated domestic production of pumice and pumicite in 1992 was up compared with 1991, according to US Bureau of Mines statistics. The Bureau estimate of domestic production of 400 kt (440,000 st) for 1991 turned out to be 401 kt (442,000 st) of actual production, the lowest since 1989. In 1992, the estimated the value of pumice and pumicite sold or used in the United States was $11.6 million, up only $200,000 from the 1991 value. There was an increase in the mine, or mill, average price from the five-year low of $11.44/t ($10.37/st) in 1986 to $26.42/t ($23.96/st) in 1992. Estimated tonnage produced in 1992 was 439 kt (484,000 st). Apparent domestic consumption was 642 kt (707,000 st), up 135 kt (149,000 st) from 1991. Imports for consumption were estimated to be 215 kt (237,000 st) last year. Domestic production supplied 68% of the demand in 1992, with net imports supplying the remaining 32%. This compares with domestic production sup¬plying 53% and net imports supplying 47% of the apparent consumption in 1988. Exports were about 900 t/a (1000 stpy) for the period 1984 to 1988. In 1989, exports rose sevenfold to 7 kt (7700 st) and to 20 kt (22,000 st) in 1990. The Bureau of Mines reported that the amount of pumice and pumicite exported in 1992 was 12 kt (13,200 st). It is assumed that these exports were from the Pacific Coast because imports, mainly from Greece, continued to be a market factor on the East Coast and the Gulf Coast States in the United States.

A residential metals abatement program has been underway in Butte for more than 20 years. More than 1,350 yard and attic cleanups were completed by the end of 2018; most triggered by lead. While the focus is on remediation of residential soil and house dust, the program also includes a blood lead monitoring program with identification and abatement of additional sources of exposure for children with elevated blood lead levels (BLLs). As specified in the remediation program, studies are being conducted every 5 years to assess BLL data collected from Butte children. The first two studies have evaluated over 6,000 BLLs from 2003 through 2017 and evaluated trends over this time period, by Butte neighborhood, and as compared to areas outside of Butte. These studies showed that rates of elevated BLLs (i.e., those above 5 µg/dL) in Butte children have declined dramatically since 2002 but have been declining much more slowly since 2011. Improved rates of confirmation testing are needed to verify the rates of elevated BLLs. While the RMAP likely has contributed to these declines in BLLs the magnitude of impact cannot be quantified.

When construction sites are in a densely- populated area or near roads, railroad or river, restrictions upon the ways of handling and using explosives such as dynamite and large demolition equipment are being increasingly stringent, in consideration of environmental pollution such as noise, vibration, dust, flyrocks etc., and safety precaution. In view of this, the development of safe and pollution-free technology for demolishing rocks at mines and reinforced concrete structure at building sites is strongly required. To meet such requirements, the demolition by means of expantion of mineral substances has been considered long before. Recently with the demolition technique using non-explosive demolition agent developed by ONODA CEMENT CO., LTD., holes are drilled into substances to be demolished, such as rocks and concrete before-hand. Then, slurry of such agent mixed with an appropriate quantity of water is poured into the holes. It hardens and expands with the passage of time, and the expansive stress reaches more than 3m/m2 in 10 to 24 hours. This expansive stress causes the material to crack. In this article, descriptions of the non- explosive demolition agent, BRISTAR manufactured by ONODA CEMENT CO., LTD., TOKYO, JAPAN, are given briefly with regard to its physical and chemical properties and its method of use; and the way it is used at an actual construction site is reported.

Energy cost for mine ventilation in Sweden is high, especially during winter time when air must be heated. This paper presents the result from a project entitled ventilation-as-required. The term ventilation-as-required means that the required volume of fresh air should be distributed only to such areas, where mining work is going on and to be reduced to a minimum in the rest of the mine. Ventilation-as-required is a monitoring system that controls the operation and capacity of the fans and measure the air pollutant gases, i.e. carbon monoxide, nitrogen and sulphur dioxide at strategic points. It is an active system that responds when equipment is under operation. MITU proposed in 1991 a project to develop a ventiation-as¬required system and such components as transmitters and receivers for the communication between the equipment and the fans. The mining companies, Boliden Mineral AB, LKAB, Outokumpu and Ammeberg Mining Corporation joined the project and have financed a joint research and development programme supported with a grant from the Swedish Government through NUTEK. MITU proposed a second project in 1992 to the mining companies to develop an improved "intelligent" fan for scope ventilation. Boliden Mineral and LKAB joined the project and have financed a joint research and development project supported by the Swedish Government through NUTEK. The Government even made a commitment to support the investment of the first 50 fans ordered with a grant of 25% of the investment cost. The result from projects show that the target set up in the plans is more than achieved, with an energy reduction that exceeds 30% compared to previous consumption. No environmental influence due to reduced ventilation is observed in the stope when work is under progress. Dilution of exhaust gases from diesel fuel decreased from 6.000 m3/L consumed diesel fuels to 3,600 m3/L. The automatic data processing and sensor system is even increasing the security of the work so that it can be done under safer environmental conditions.

A marine sonic sub-bottom profiling system and a hovercraft were used in an engineering geophysics survey of the tailings being deposited at the Mercur gold mine. Detailed density sections with vertical resolution of one meter were desired for computations of strength, permeability and potential self-compaction. The logistical problems of conducting a geophysical survey and in collection of geotechnical soil samples from an active tailing impoundment was solved by using the amphibious hovercraft for towing and transport on the impoundment. The "chirp" sonic system produced continuous, real-time geophysical cross-sections with vertical resolution of ten centimeters showing possible trapped gas. The hovercraft provided a platform over water, ice, slurry, and solid beach for collection of geotechnical information and physical samples.

The mineral industry uses significant amounts of water in processing. Thus, sustainable practices with the processing of ores are of critical importance. An impact tester was used to measure the adhesion force between particles and a glass disk [1,2]. A removal force was caused by the impact of the disk/particle containing a puck with a stopper. Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory [3] was used to determine the interfacial energy between the particles and the substrate. Capillary condensation of water can occur between the particle and surfaces in humid environments. The adhesion of particles on rough surfaces has been studied previously [4-10]. The research presented herein combines both variables to separate particle types with minimal water usage.

INTRODUCTION Radon, thoron and their airborne daughter products may result in a significant biological hazard when they are concentrated in enclosed places such as mines, houses and caves. High concentrations of radon and its particulate daughter have long, been known to be a causative agent for lung cancer to uranium miner: (Archer 1973). More recently increasing concern has been expressed on the possible health hazards associated with long term exposures over large population groups to low levels of radon daughters (Cohen 1980, Stranden 1980). Due to its peculiar geological features, Italy has various natural environments where the content of uranium and thorium in the soil may increase underground radioactivity. The presence in Italy of many underground waters rich in radon may be considered a further important source of radon in underground mines. A preliminary survey of the radon and radon daughter air concentrations in italian underground mines was started in 1971 (Bottino 1973). Furthermore many studies (Sciocchetti 1978, Sciocchetti 1980, Clemente 1980) have been performed during the last ten year to characterize the natural radiation environment in Italy. It has been also demonstrated that 21OPb/21OPo skeletal burden in spa workers and non-uranium miners can be heavily increased by the exposure (short or/and prolonged) to high levels of radon daughter air concentration (Clemente 1980). All these studies have been of great help to put in the right prospective the radiation hazards linked to the underground working activity in non-uranium italian mines. Two main actions have been prosecuted from 1971 until today in order to evaluate in greater detail such radiation hazards and then, when needed, to obtain their reduction to levels which may be considered acceptable. The two actions may schematically described as the following: - Measurement of the radon and daughter (and thoron and daughter when needed) concentrations in most of the italian non-uranium mines. The assessment of the radiation hazards linked to both the annual average lung exposure and the 210 Pb - 210 Po annual average dose to the skeleton is then performed for each considered mine by taking into account the main parameters characteristic of the mine. - Set up of a national regulatory recommendation on the permissible limits for the radiation exposure of workers due to underground mining activity. Such recommendation have been established in 1978 and have been designed in order to implement a national radiation protection practice during the underground mining activity. In this paper a summary description of the results obtained during the execution of these two actions will be given. MATERIAL AND METHODS Measurement of Radon, Thoron and their Daughter Products The excution of the planned survey requires the availability of specific techniques and instruments for measuring the different parameters characterizing the radon, thoron and their daughter exposure in mines. A reference laboratory was set up for the development and the standardization of the measurement procedures. Measurements of radon, thoron and daughter concentrations are performed by various methods: instanteneous or grab sampling methods and continuous read out monitors. The radon concentration is usually measured by a modified version of the two filter method. Mine air is drawn into a polyethylene bag and the sample is there after injected into a two filter tube; after sampling the exit filter is counted by the alpha spectrometric technique. The measurements is completed in a total time of less than 25 minutes at a sensitivity level as low as 3.7 Bq/m3 for a tube volume of 15 1. The measurement of radon and thoron daughter concentration and of the relevant potential alpha energy concentration is performed by means of a portable spectrometric apparatus which was developed at our laboratory (Sciocchetti 1981). The device allows multiple operating modes: instantaneous or brief sampling period and automatic cycles; computer data processing is then provided. The effectiveness of selective flocculation and dispersion processes for the concentration of hematite ore are strongly dependent on the ionic content of the process water. It has been noticed that magnesium ions are more detrimental to iron recoveries during gravity separation and flotation processes than calcium. This phenomenon was studied by measuring the zeta potential of hematite ore at various concentrations of sodium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium at a pH of 11. Results show that zeta potential inverts from negative to positive at concentrations as low as 0.16 mM of magnesium ions in the solution. It takes a significantly higher concentration (1.25 mM) of calcium ions to achieve the same effect. This difference is attributed to the ability of magnesium ions to adsorb to all surface hydroxyl groups, whereas calcium, due to its larger size, can only adsorb to every third hydroxyl group. This hypothesis was confirmed by results similar to those seen with calcium when this test was repeated with strontium and barium ions. The tendency for calcium ions to adsorb to every third surface hydroxyl group causes higher concentrations of calcium to be less detrimental to hematite concentration processes than magnesium.

3D modelling can be used throughout the mine lifecycle and has proven to be a powerful tool for consultants and mining companies. One of the most significant benefits of 3D models is their ability to enhance collaboration, communication, and understanding between the mine owner, design engineers, and other relevant stakeholders that have a shared interest in responsible mining and site management. Tailings and mine waste management is an interdisciplinary effort that requires effective coordination and communication between a wide range of consultants, operators, and stakeholders alike. The increased emphasis on Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) highlights the importance for mine operators to engage and communicate with all parties involved in the planning, permitting, operation, and closure of mine sites. 3D models are valuable tools that can be used for development of geotechnical conceptual models, allowing for improved design and monitoring of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs). A clear conceptual understanding of a TSFs subsurface geology and foundation characterization is essential for proper tailings management, design, and planning. Visualization with 3D modelling can simplify the interpretation of the, oftentimes intricate, mine sight subsurface settings and allows for quick and effective geotechnical conceptualization. 3D models can be used to identify data gaps, optimize field investigations, and streamline the development of numerical stability or groundwater models. They can help communicate the complex nature of subsurface and TSF interactions in a clear, concise, and accurate manner to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders. This paper discusses some of the benefits of 3D modelling in relation to geotechnical analysis for tailings management and provides methodologies for how to improve upon some methodologies that are considered industry standards.

Introduction Elevated zinc concentrations are observed in groundwater within alluvium adjacent to Silver Creek east of Park City, Utah. The study area is located in a small valley one and one-half miles northeast of Park City, Utah in Summit County, Utah (Figure 1). Although surface water concentrations in Silver Creek are typically less than 1 mg/l, groundwater concentrations have been measured as high as 85 mg/l in a near neutral pH environment. The elevated zinc concentrations in groundwater result from several factors including: (1) dissolution of zinc from tailings exposed at the surface and within the alluvium, (2) oxidizing conditions created by surface/ground-water exchange, and (3) ideal geochemical conditions for the dissolution of zinc-containing minerals. These ideal conditions include readily soluble minerals, available anions for complexation, and lack of available surface adsorption sites.

In July 1985, as the U.S. copper industry contracted and the Mexican industry expanded, a trans border pollution agreement was signed which included smelter air pollution control in the "Gray Triangle": Cananea, Nacozari and Douglas. Since then the Douglas smelter has been closed, a year earlier than initially required; though its new smelter is operating, S02 collection and acid disposal at Nacozari is yet to come; and the Cananea smelter has been un-touched. Nacozari and Cananea copper mining have expanded while a reduced U.S. copper industry has rationalized to a point of fragile profitability. As a paradigm of U.S. copper competitiveness, this paper attempts to explain the differential fortunes of copper in the two countries, to project the future of the smelter agreement as a function of acid disposal, and to consider the consequences of the politicized application of smelter pollution control in Arizona.

Conveyor belt haulage has become the preferred mainline transport method in underground coal mining, especially for multi-unit mines. Proper designs for belts (width and speed) and surge bins (placement, capacity, and discharge rate) are necessary to achieve efficient mine haul- age. Two computer simulation models, CMBCS and BELTSIM, available for designing these parameters were compared. These comparisons included modeling, input data requirements, statistical flexibility, accuracy of simulated loading, and execution time.

There is general agreement among those involved in occupational and public health that work-related diseases are under-diagnosed and under-reported. Highmark is particularly well positioned to carry out industry health analysis as it provides medical insurance for approximately three quarters of the insured population of Western Pennsylvania including some of the areas largest employers. The purpose of this study is to gain a more accurate understanding of the mining industry rates of respiratory diseases that maybe occupationally related and identify those inflated respiratory disease and hearing loss rates. Conditions examined included COPD, asthma, and pneumoconiosis.

As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines program to evaluate alternatives to sodium cyanide in gold leaching, three organic nitrile compounds were tested for their effectiveness as gold lixiviante. The organic compounds examined were malononitrile, acetonitrile, and cyanoacetamide. The reagents were tested on an oxide ore, two carbonaceous ores, and a eulfidic ore. Acetonitrile and cyanoacetamide were shown to be ineffective gold leachante. Malononitrile was the most successful of the organic lixiviants. On an oxide ore, malononitrile performed shilarlyto sodium cyanide with extractions of around 80 pct. For carbonaceous "preg-robbing" oree, sodium cyanide was completely ineffective while malononitrile extracted 24 pct of the gold. When using a resin-in-leach technique, extraction with sodium cyanide increased to 60 pct and the extraction with malononitrile increased to 80 pct. On the sulfide ore, sodium cyanide and malononitrile performed similarly with 80+ pct extraction as long as the pH of the malononitrile solution wae maintained above 10.5. Malononitrile is six times less toxic than sodium cyanide as measured by LD, levels. Therefore, malononitrile has a significant advantage over eodium cyanide, but its high cost and undemonstrated usefulnees make it unlikely to gain acceptance.
