The Niblack polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits are located on Prince of Wales Island in southeast Alaska, approximately 50 km southwest of Ketchikan. The property hosts a number of polymetallic volcanogenic sulfide occurrences within the folded Lookout rhyolite volcanic succession. The Lookout deposit is the primary focus of current resource delineation and contains an indicated resource of 4,136,000 tonnes at 1.13% Cu, 2.32 g/t Au, 2.27% Zn, 38.70 g/t Ag and an inferred resource of 1,736,000 tonnes at 1.09% Cu, 1.77 g/t Au, 2.02% Zn, and 25.52 g/t Ag as of March 2011. Sulfide mineralization is interpreted to have formed sub-seafloor, within permeable felsic fragmental volcanic rocks. Sulfide minerals of economic interest include chalcopyrite and Fe-poor, Zn-rich sphalerite. Of considerable importance, the Lookout deposit contains elevated gold that occurs as inclusions within the base metal sulfides.

INTRODUCTION The use of backfill materials in underground mines has been practiced for many years and the trend indicates an increased utilization of backfill materials in the future. The authors believe that underground uranium mines will follow this trend. Classified mill tailings, approximately 65 to 70 percent solids by weight, are the most common fill materials. Cement or other pozzolanic agents can be added to the fill materials to improve their strength characteristics. Dry fill, in the form of development muck, can also be introduced in the stopes to fill the voids left by the action of mining the ore. This paper deals mainly with the assessment of the radiation properties of backfill materials originating from uranium ores processed in the milling facilities of uranium mines. The paper outlines the results of studies conducted in the laboratory and in the field on radon emanating characteristics of backfill materials utilized in uranium mines. ROLE OF BACKFILL IN UNDERGROUND MINES Fill is a structural component of any underground mining system. In general terms, the purpose of filling is to provide ground support, to make recovery of pillars possible to provide a working platform for men and equipment, and to allow for waste disposal. There are other inherent advantages to the use of backfill underground, the most important being to: a) permit mining at greater depth b) allow the adoption of highly mechanized mining techniques c) reduce dilution from wall sloughing d) minimize roof and wall failures e) allow the mining of irregular orebodies, and f) to provide better control of ventilation. The last item is of great importance to uranium mine operators. The introduction of radioactive backfill underground represents an additional source of radioactive contamination; on the other hand the introduction of backfill in the mine reduces the volumes of workings to be ventilated. As a consequence the general mine ventilation is more effective and in most cases, better air quality can be maintained in the mine. There are of course some disadvantages associated with the use of hydraulic fills in underground mines, notably: a) the handling of large additional quantities of water from the underground workings b) delays caused by the cyclical nature of the backfilling operations c) additional costs associated with stope preparation and placement of backfill in stopes, and d) "spills" caused by bursting pipes or fill escaping from fill retaining structures. ASSESSMENT OF NON-RADIOACTIVE PROPERTIES Although the radioactive properties of mine backfills are discussed in this paper many other physical and chemical properties of backfills must also be considered. These properties include: a) percolation rate and permeability parameters b) viscosity versus pulp density relationships c) size analyses d) settling times e) settled bulk density f) solids specific gravity g) void ratio and porosity h) optimal percentage solids by weight i) specific gravity of slurry j) addition of cement:cement retention and loss k) unconfined compressive strength 1) triaxial compressive strength m) shear strength (non-cemented)

INTRODUCTION The heavy risk inherent in all underground construction projects contributes significantly to the high cost of transportation tunnels. First, the knowledge of this risk leads the engineer to design conservatively. Second, the cost overruns are still common with a high proportion of them originating from corrective measures needed when unforeseen problems develop during excavation. These unforeseen problems includes - encountering unexpected objects, materials and water conditions - experiencing an unforeseen behavior of the materials - damaging property beyond the expected range of influence of the tunnel construction. To minimize these expenses, more emphasis is being placed on well planned and interpreted site investigation programs in the final design and planning stages of the project. It is well known that the cost of a planned excavation is less than the cost of dealing with the same conditions when they are encountered unexpectedly. Therefore, the objective of site investigation is to provide a complete set of reliable data for designers and contractors that is continuous along the projected tunnel alignment. Two alternatives axe available to achieve this objective; - for shallow tunnels, it is often feasible to generate continuous data by drilling appropriately spaced, vertical bore holes and applying sensing techniques for interpolation (1, 8). - for deep tunnels, or certain urban tunnels under existing structures, closely spaced, vertical bore holes are not feasible except for narrow zones at the portals. In such cases direct horizontal penetration may be required that may be complemented by radial sensing to extend the range of information.

The results of an experimental and theoretical research study into the spatial and temporal behavior of dust in mine airways is summarized in the paper. Experiments were performed in mine airways under both controlled and normal operating conditions. The controlled experiments included the documentation of the concentration and deposition patterns for two types of dust under three different velocities. Real-time dust concentration data were obtained using Real-time Aerosol Monitors (RAM-I) to determine the dispersion coefficient in a mine airway. On the theoretical front, a convection-diffusion model of the dust flow phenomenon in mine airways was developed considering dominant mechanisms affecting dust transport and deposition in mine airways. Mechanisms modeled include turbulent and gravitational deposition, coagulation, and dispersion.

Judging from the progress made in August 1989, drilling and raise boring of a 400-m (1312-ft) pilot hole at the Elura mine of Pasminco Ltd. in Southeastern Australia, an observer would never guess that the project had been delayed nearly a year. Moreover, two pilot holes had been abandoned in previous attempts. The challenge was to drill a 93-mm (3.66-in.) H size exploration hole between Elura's 400- and 800-m (1312and 2624-ft) levels. The hole needed to be kept within a 300-mm-diam (12-in.diam) target cylinder over the 400 m (1312 ft) distance. The deviation restriction of the initial core hole was necessary to precision ream a pilot hole to 330 mm (13 in.) and then raise bore a 6-m-diam (20-ft-diam) shaft, planned as the primary men and materials access between the two levels. Core was not really necessary to gain an accurate geological picture of the steeply dipping formation. Rather, the core barrel was used because it tended to drill a straighter hole. Using rock bits in the steeply dipping formation would have simply aggravated the problem of deviation. The core barrel and diamond bit optimized the probability of a straighter hole. However, on the first two attempts to drill the pilot hole, the bit was out of the 300-mm (12-in.) target cylinder within the first 50 to 60 m (164 to 197 ft), and the holes were abandoned.

The use of ground-probing radar as a reflection mapping tool has expanded greatly in the last few years. This tool can now be used to produce near surface information which is very useful to geotechnical engineers. Using the lightweight field equipment now available, it is possible to use the radar within mines and tunnels to obtain information which may impact the safety and production of these operations.

It was reported earlier that francolite and dolomite from the South Florida deposits cannot be selectively floated using conventional conditioning with sodium oleate as the collector. However, dolomite could be separated from francolite if the minerals were first conditioned at pH 10 followed by reconditioning at a lower pH. An optimum separation was achieved at a reconditioning pH below 4.5. Reconditioning pH and collector concentration were determined to exert a major influence on the selectivity. Flotation, adsorption and transmission infrared spectroscopic results are presented to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the observed selectivity.

To clarify what r mean about this long title, I would like to define the term technology. A standard definition of the word "technology" is "a technical method of achieving a practical purpose". Incidently, another definition of the term is merely "technical language". The same dictionary defines the word "technology" as "having a special, usually practical, knowledge of mechanical or scientific subject." Naturally, the practical purpose of the subject with which we are concerned is solving of problems we encounter in the mining industry. I might further describe the subject of this discourse by defining the term "manager". An old definition, "one who dispenses the duties of his position with care and economy." In line with the above definition most of the technology with which we in the mining industry are confronted with deals with some form of cost reduction. This may be related to the speed of doing an operation or to saving of labor or supply costs. These can be improvements of an existing method or the result of new processes or inventions, such as new machinery.

The industrial Source Complex (ISC3) model is the accepted standard used to predict emissions of particulate matter less tan 10µm in diameter (PM10) from industrial operations. This model, however, over-predicts PM10 emissions from surface mining operations, making permits harder to obtain. The over-prediction is likely due to the fact that the model applies emissions from mobile (dynamic) sources to stationary (static) areas. Utilizing a Gaussian dispersion equation, a Dynamic Component Program was created to correct the over-prediction of the model and results in a much more realistic modeling of actual conditions from mobile sources.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, conducted studies to recover phosphate from four dolomitic southern Florida deposits not currently mined. The samples contained 5.8 to 10.2 percent P205 and 1.7 to 1.8 percent MgO. Chemical analyses of sized fractions indicated that no pebble concentrate (plus 1.2 mm) could be produced from these samples. A scheme was developed that consisted of desliming, grinding, scrubbing, and redesliming the ore to produce a flotation feed. Conventional one-step fatty acid-fuel oil batch flotation tests on the samples resulted in concentrates containing 29.0 to 31.3 percent P205 at flotation recoveries ranging from 72.4 to 96.1 percent of the flotation feed. The MgO content of the concentrates ranged from 0.47 to 1.36 percent. Continuous flotation of the Manatee No. 2 sample indicated that commercial-grade phosphate concentrates analyzing 31.3 percent P205 and 0.55 percent MgO could be produced with a flotation recovery of 89.9 percent. The MgO content of concentrates obtained from the Manatee No. I and Hardee samples was 1.20 to 1.36 percent, respectively. Leaching with aqueous SO2 reduced the MgO content of these phosphate concentrates to 0.5 and 0.8 percent, but with a concomitant loss in phosphate recovery.

PolyMet Mining is developing the NorthMet property near Duluth, Minnesota. Laboratory investigations had led to the development of the PLATSOL process to dissolve in one step the base metals (copper and nickel) as well as the gold and PGM’s. To complete the pre-feasibility study, a fully integrated ten-day pilot plant trial was undertaken, comprising of: high temperature (>220ºC) pressure oxidation in the presence of 5-10 g/L chloride (the PLATSOL process), followed by solid/liquid separation, gold plus PGM’s recovery from solution, conventional Cu SX/EW and recycling of the copper raffinate to the autoclave. The concentrate tested was a NorthMet bulk flotation concentrate assaying 14.7% Cu, 3.05% Ni, 0.14% Co, 26.7% S, 1.4 g/t Au, 2.2 g/t Pt and 9.9 g/t Pd. Laboratory results were fully confirmed and with minor adjustments of the laboratory PLATSOL® conditions, the following leach extractions were obtained during the pilot plant trial: Cu 99.6%, Ni 98.9%, Co 96%, Pd 94.6%, Pt 96% and Au 89.4%.

The following is a progress report on a continuing study being made by the Sanitary District for purposes of developing reliable data for predicting costs and progress on future tunnel contracts. All data available to date on five separate tunnel contracts has been analyzed. All were machine-mined in soft ground, all used steel ribs and wood lagging and finished inside diameters varying from 5'6" to 6'6". Basic data regarding progress per shift, hours mined per shift, hours of downtime per shift, cause of downtime and type of soil mined were reported by the District's resident engineer at the job site. Figure 1, Weekly Mining Report is an example of the form used. Data regarding manpower and equipment used during tunnelling operations was also supplied by the resident engineer during the course of construction. Soil type being mined was verified by the resident engineer during construction, by visual observation, and compared with data listed on a previously prepared soil profile. Social attention to environmental aspects, steadily increasing in European Countries, has been leading to a stricter regulation of many productive activities. Among them, mining and quarrying sectors have been often censured for their potential and real impacts on land and environment. Referring to dimension stone exploitation (also the terms ornamental stone or natural stone are here used as synonymous), quarries are often concentrated in extractive basins, where the resource is localized with suitable quality and quantity: this fact has sometimes raised critical environmental situations. Nevertheless, dimension stone quarrying represents in Europe a traditional and important economical activity, source of wealth and employment. Moreover, many natural stones take on a ?cultural? value and may be considered as ?classic?, as they have been exploited since antiquity and are element of the architectural heritage of many Countries. The sector relevance demands the research of a sustainable balance between social-economical needs and environmental protection. Actually, very restrictive environmental protection policies have led to severe limitations to quarrying activity, but the results do not seem to be completely positive in terms of sustainability: on the one hand, closing-down stone quarrying activities imposes a shrinkage in local, social and economical development; on the other, quarrying activity is pushed towards developing Countries, environmentally un-protected, simply moving and putting off to next future the problem. The challenge of the sustainable development of quarrying sector ? recently explored in the European Commission?s communication ?Promoting sustainable development in the EU non energy extractive industry? (COM-2000-265) ? should be achieved through a positive link between theoretical statements and practical effects: sustainability indicators may be an effective instrument to assess and monitor the environmental performance of the industry. The paper refers to the development of specific ecological criteria and indicators, which can be useful to measure and predict the eco-efficiency of a dimension stone quarry, finally pointing out where improvement efforts have to be focused.

The coal and gas outburst accident on May 20, 2007 at Sihe Coal Mine is unique in that there was no or very little soft coal in the coal seam and that the coal strength was very high. The outburst also showed that there was a very high gas content of 20-30 m3/t in the coal seam nearby the outburst site. Based on the field test and observations, together with laboratory experiments, detailed analysis was conducted on the controlling factors of coal and gas outburst potential at Sihe Coal Mine. Stress data available from Sihe Coal Mine, northern China, and other parts of the world, were also taken into account to facilitate the analysis. The results shows that the stress level was not abnormal compared to other coal fields in China prone to outbursts, and that gas contained in the coal seam was the main factor that triggered the outburst. All these factors were essentially controlled by the tectonic evolution features in Qinshui Coal Basin, to the Southeast of which Sihe coal field is located. Based on the analysis, assessment of coal seam outburst potential was carried out by measurements of coal seam gas contents, observation, and detection of soft coal layers in the coal seam. The results show that outbursts are limited to only a small part of the whole coal seam and that the eastern part of coal field is not prone to outbursts.

THE PENETRATION RATE BASELINE DILEMMA The penetration rate is the instantaneous advance rate of a TBM in a rock tunnel. Normally expressed in feet per hour. The production rate is the penetration rate multiplied by the number of hours worked and then factored by the actual utilization of the TBM. In a given rock formation, the actual production rate is a result of many factors some of which are within the control of the contractor and some of which are based on the route selected. Factors that are within the contractors control are cutter profile, frequency of cutter changes, thrust, rotation speed, cutter spacing and the efficiency of the operation. Factors that are site (route) specific are compressive strength, fracture orientation, fracture frequency, micro- fracturing, quartz content, Moh’s hardness, Cerchar Abrasivity Brazilian Tensile Strength and Youngs Modulus of the rock. In addition the following route speci?c conditions are beyond the contractors control; rockjointing, rock stress fault zones, water in?ow and rock decomposition; all of which effect production rate. Any one of the above defined rock properties, equipment specifications and actual operating usage will change the penetration rate. Furthermore, since the rock formation changes both in content and orientation as the tunnel advances, the penetration rate is constantly varying. The current industry practice in bidding tunnels is for each contractor to individually evaluate the rock hardness and other properties and from this information develop a penetration rate. All other factors being equal, the contractor using the most optimistic penetration rate will be the low bidder and be awarded the project. As this view is by definition optimistic, invariably the rock will be harder than the low bid assessment and the contractor will request additional compensation for the changed condition. The contractor will attempt to justify his optimistic assessment as reasonable by using expert supporting analysis. The above described example which is quite common at present in the industry tends to make the most optimistic contractor (at time of bidding) the contractor selected for the project whereas it is in the owners interest to contract with the most efficient contractor not the most optimistic. This situation is similar to the Geotechnical analysis that was prevalent in the industry over twenty years ago. Many projects have experienced a significant reduction of penetration rate from that which was originally estimated. In these cases the contractor often makes a claim for extra compensation based on the difference between the actual rock encountered

Test methods used to evaluate crude ore samples of kaolin clay for commercial consideration are reviewed. A background of the kaolin mineral and known means of prospecting this mineral are presented. Common analytical methods are discussed with special emphasis on those in use today.

The Biwabik Iron Formation is a ~1.9 billion year-old sequence of iron-rich sedimentary rocks that was metamorphosed at its eastern- most extent by ~1.1 billion year-old intrusions of the Duluth Complex. The metamorphic recrystallization of iron-formation locally produced iron-rich amphiboles and other fibrous iron-silicate minerals. The presence of these minerals in iron-formation along the eastern part of what is known as the Mesabi Iron Range, and their potential liberation by iron mining has raised environmental health concerns. We describe here the geologic setting and mineralogic composition of the Biwabik Iron Formation in and adjacent to the contact metamorphic aureole of the Duluth Complex. The effects of metamorphism are most pronounced within a few kilometers of the contact, and decrease progressively away from it. The contact aureole has been divided into four metamorphic zones?each characterized by the composition and crystal structure of the metamorphic minerals it contains. The recrystallization of iron-formation to iron-rich amphibole minerals (grunerite and cummingtonite) and iron-pyroxene minerals (hedenbergite and ferrohypersthene) is best developed in zones that are most proximal to the Duluth Complex contact. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. Flotation plant simulation, a relatively recent methodology in mineral processing, is defined and corresponding uses are discussed. Typical simulation structures are compared. Current problem areas exist although these are not insurmountable. Following a brief state of the art discussion, the N. I. M. simulation program is reviewed. In general, digital plant simulation is expected to be of substantial benefit in the near future.

The coal companies of today have to make all of their in-the-field managers MAINTENANCE PRODUCTION MANAGERS. By using a computer application to monitor all aspects of the daily production as well as the maintenance, a company can immediately effect a cost reduction by studying the down-time and delay trends on an everyday basis. This paper will outline how a company can use a program to not only put a stop to the increasing supply and maintenance costs but start trimming each of these cost centers while actually increasing the efficiency and productivity of the current work force.

Rouez is a recent discovery of a major low-grade sulfide body (± 100 m, 0,6 % Cu, 0.3 % Pb, 1 ,5 % Zn, 21 g/t Ag, 1.5 g/t Au) in a populated farming area of Brittany, France, some 30 kilometres northwest of Le Mans. The discovery is the result of an airborne electro- magnetic (INPUT) survey. It is the first time that the INPUT method has been used in France. The survey Gas successful in spite of the numerous interferences normally found in populated areas. The lack of a good drainage system would not allow the discovery of Rouez using stream sediment geochemistry alone. Ground geophysical surveys confirmed the airborne work and gave sufficient information to make the first hole a discovery hole. The deposit is Proterozoic in age and sediment-hosted. The metamorphism is low grade.
